1Neuchâtel Castle

Castle
Neuchâtel Castle, a hilltop fortress dating back to the 11th century, offers interior tours, exhibits, and breathtaking panoramic views of the city. This national historic monument is a must-visit attraction in Neuchâtel. The grand castle boasts stunning prehistoric architecture and captivating interiors that have made it popular among travelers. Situated at the eastern end of a ridge overlooking the city, the castle features two courtyards and is adjacent to the Gothic church Collegiale.
You can reach the castle with a short hike. The view and architecture are aesthetically very satisfying and ethereal. If you go at a time when the sun is shining, an incredibly beautiful atmosphere awaits you in the courtyard. Unfortunately, the church was closed when we went, but it was enough for us to explore the surroundings and we enjoyed it sooo much.

A great hike with spectacular views! Take the stairs upwards and a lil hike to enjoy a panoramic view over the brown edges of ancient buildings! A beautiful garden up there as well with Daffodils growing 🌼
Dina H — Google review
Lovely church and walls where you can stroll around freely. Castle hosts the local government and is you can come in via a 45min guided tour at 2,3,4 & 5pm for 5CHF per person. Recommend visiting the church interior and a pretty little garden to the left of the church, it's apparently maintained by a very good gardener.
Dávid V — Google review
Beautiful views over the city and lake. Easily accessible and worth the walk up a slight hill.
Catherine M — Google review
Interesting experience where you visit a medieval castle that is presently also a government building. You can only go in the courtyard and take picture for free but with 5 CHF you will be given a guided tour for about 30 to 45 mins. The ticket can be bought from receptions located in the office just the left after you pass the wooden entrance gate. My tour was small so it was only for ~30 mins. The guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and spoke good English. You will be guided starting from the outside of the castle for short history lesson about the building and then into some of the rooms inside: historical rooms that are repurposed into court room, parliament room and meeting rooms. Tips: Please note the specification timeslots where the tour was conducted (different for different part of the years).

Unfortunately has been vandalised with free palestain titles. In fact - gorgeous historical catholic building
Niketas C — Google review
Neuchatel is a very beautiful atmospheric city of Switzerland on the shore of a lake with its own castle and very cozy streets
Valeriy V — Google review
Kind of boring and disappointing. Like, it looks really amazing from the train as you pass through the city but when you stop and go in there it just seems to be some government functions operating inside. There is a guided tour of the castle available but the timing did not allow. Would be nice if there was at least a little something that was possible self-guided.

Reformed church
Collegiate Church, located next to the Chateau de Neuchatel, is a Gothic church dating back to the 12th century. The climb up to the church offers a rewarding view over the town and Lake Neuchatel. While currently undergoing renovations, its most striking feature is its beautiful ceiling. The church's multi-colored roof tiles are particularly impressive. Visitors can find solace in its calming garden and enjoy music by a talented organist during Sunday services.
The Collegiate in Neuchâtel is a must-see spot, offering a beautiful combination of history and scenic views. This expansive site features stunning stained glass windows and a captivating atmosphere inside the church. The walk to the Collegiate is pleasant, with both stair and wheelchair access available. The location, adjacent to the castle, provides a picturesque medieval architecture experience. Perfect for a picnic, there are benches where you can relax and enjoy the view. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Neuchâtel.

Church
Neuchatel Castle and Collegiate Church are two iconic landmarks in Neuchatel, offering visitors a glimpse into the town's rich history. The castle, dating back to the 11th century, stands proudly atop a hill, providing stunning panoramic views of the city. Meanwhile, the collegiate church exudes tranquility and timelessness, nestled on the hill above the old town.
(Translated by Google) The Neuchâtel collegiate church and the Neuchâtel castle. It is a very quiet place located on the hill above the old town of Neuchâtel. A quiet and timeless place. The castle remains occupied by the municipal administration. Parking spaces are reserved for cantonal employees. The cathedral remains marble. The cloister has been transformed into modern art. The lookout path has not changed. The western surrounding walls remain the best. Nothing has changed for fifteen hundred years. The castle has never been attacked and the city has never been besieged.
David D — Google review
Church is beautiful. However, there are no signs about the castle, how to get in, where it is located. The taxi driver at the Neuchatel train station, did not speak English. When I said castle, he had no idea what I was talking about. I got on the website and showed him name and address. Had to give him 20 franc's, and he still didn't know if we were at the right location, because there are NO SIGNS! The original inhabitants, the Hochbergs/Hachbergs aka Count of Neuchatel, are distant cousins, and it sure would have been nice to see the inside. I came on an almost 8 hour plane ride, plus a train, to see this castle. It said on line it is open on Sundays. Noone up there knew where to go or what to do. Basically, I saw some old stone walls, and the church, and never the castle.

Musée d'Ethnographie is a cultural institution housing an extensive collection of 30,000 artifacts primarily from Africa, as well as other regions and ancient Egypt. The museum offers thought-provoking exhibits that are carefully curated and presented. Visitors can immerse themselves in the contrasting lives of Caribou Inuits while enjoying scenic views of Neuchatel lake. The museum also features interactive sessions and captivating exhibitions that showcase a diverse range of cultures.
Stoped for a quick visit as I was nearby and it was a free entry day. Both permanent and temporary expositions were open. On the temporary exhibition, the broad info panels also had english translation. Some smaller details didn't. The museum also has a cafe and clean toilet available.

Parking Port SA is a well-located parking garage, centrally situated by the lake. It offers normal-width parking spaces, although they may be a bit tight for larger vehicles. The entrance and exit can be challenging for special cars but manageable. Despite being somewhat expensive, the facility is clean and modern with ample space and free loading options available. Additionally, it provides convenient access to the old city, harbor, and downtown area of Neuchatel.
Underground parking structure is not accessible when making a left turn, you must approach and enter on a right turn. It's well placed accessible to the marina, and restaurants and Bars. Also a short stroll to old town central shops, food, and cinemas 🎥.

Reformed church
The Temple du Bas is a Protestant church constructed for the Huguenots following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. It showcases austere Calvinist architecture and features an exterior spiral staircase dating back to around 1600, located at Passage des Corbels on Rue du Tresor. The church, built from local yellow limestone near Neuchatel, reflects the region's historical building materials.
This Temple was built in 1696. It is very nice, elegant building in the center of the old city. It is a rare example of reformed architecture. The inside was greatly altered.Nowadays Temple du Bas is not only a place of worship, but also the music room of Neuchatel. When I visited the place there was a concert at the amazing music room. *****

(Translated by Google) A modest-looking Protestant church, built of yellow limestone, like most of the old buildings and structures in Neuchâtel. Stone that was mined from local quarries near Neuchâtel, near the village of Hauterive. It was considered quite hard, but at the same time easy to process. Today, the resources of this stone are almost exhausted, so development was stopped in order to preserve the limestone for the restoration of such famous buildings as the Collegiate Church. There is a drinking fountain with a sculpture of a lion next to the church. The beast opened its mouth so wide that it seemed as if it had holes in its mouth; in general, it turned out ugly. The Lion Fountain was built in the same year as the Griffin Fountain - in 1664. The Lion, as the king of beasts, by analogy with the griffin, bore the symbolic meaning of the power of the rulers who lived in the castle.

Fbg de l'Hôpital 4 holds a significant place in history, particularly for its role in accommodating the needs of the community. Recognizing that elderly individuals and pregnant women faced challenges accessing the Collegiate Church during winter months, it was decided to host masses at the Lower Towns Hospital Chapel as an alternative. However, to maintain their influence and financial stability, the canons opted not to install a bell in this chapel.

11Rue de la Collégiale

Mentioned on

Nestled in the heart of history, Rue de la Collégiale 10 was once home to twelve canons who played a significant role not just within the church but also in the political arena. Despite their influential status, their way of life appeared less than devout, as they maintained strict standards for those around them. This intriguing juxtaposition makes Rue de la Collégiale a fascinating spot to explore, reflecting both ecclesiastical authority and societal governance from a bygone era.

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, also known as the Red Church, is situated in Neuchatel, Switzerland. This Neo-Gothic place of worship was designed by Guillaume Ritter and consecrated in 1906. Following a significant restoration from 1984 to 2000, it was designated as a national monument in 1986. The church's striking red exterior catches the eye and its interior is adorned with intricate craftsmanship.
