1Neuchâtel

Mentioned on

Neuchâtel is a charming city located on the northern shore of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. The medieval old town, nestled beneath the historic Château de Neuchâtel and the Gothic Collégiale church, offers a glimpse into its rich history. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Jura Mountains west of the city boast Creux du Van, an impressive canyon with hiking trails and breathtaking views.

Specialty Museums
Laténium Parc et Musée d'Archéologie is an impressive modern museum and archaeological park located in Hauterive, Switzerland. The museum offers a journey through time, showcasing human evolution in Europe from the Neanderthal era to the Renaissance. With eight rooms filled with artifacts, human skeletons, models, and interactive educational stations, visitors can explore over 50,000 years of regional history. The museum also features complementary visiting exhibitions for added insight into the past.
This is an extraordinary archeological museum, by far the most interesting I have visited. It appears to have been designed and built around objects and histories that have been excavated in the Neuchâtel region rather than these having been put into a museum building. We visited the first Friday morning of 2025 and were almost by ourselves with a lot of time to follow the very educational and thrilling layout of our past history. And spend some time also in the gardens like we did this beautiful morning. Just now there is a separate exhibition featuring objects and histories from prison camps in France, Germany, Poland and Switzerland set up during WWII that you should not miss. But hurry up, it closes soon! Overall, a great way to educate yourself!!

Very nice museum about the history of people of Neuchatel from the Neolithic era, Bronze age, Celts, Gallo-Roman and then lastly, the Middle Ages. The park outside the museum also contains display about early settlers of the region. The museum is sleek and the display looks modern. Entrance ticket is CHF12. The display has description in French and German. Unfortunately, there is no English language in the description. However, you can get audio guide (in many languages including English) for CHF5. For me, the highlight of the museum is the ancient ship. The museum is also located just opposite the lake and has beautiful scenery Recommended visit.
Eric L — Google review
Interesting museum, with a variery of items, the objects are well described and labelled (we did not take any audioguide) and the different spaces take you through history and are also well designed and even impressive. There is also a section about archeology itself and how the different objects are maintained and protected against decay, especially in water, which is very interesting. The visit takes about 2-2.5 hours. There are also some interesting elements outside; moreover the area around the museum and the lake is worth a stroll for its beautiful landscape! We did not find the staff very helpful, though.
Monica P — Google review
A museum that displays artifacts from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages. Very friendly staff. Impressive reconstructions of dwellings in the outdoor park
Octavian R — Google review
This was a very strange visit for me. The best dedicated archaeology museum I've ever visited (and I've been to a lot) with the rudest staff I have ever encountered at a museum anywhere in the world. Swiss people are generally pretty nice, but not the rude young docent here (blond woman with a nosering)! Totally unacceptable for a museum staff.
Jason C — Google review
Like most if the museum in Switzerland everything is absolutely perfect clean and well prepared. There is just one thing i miss everywhere, there is just nothing to touch, in a way to help understand how heavy, or soft or well done a piece is. Holding a sword or a coin, even a replica would help understand kids and adults how things were back then.
Gusti G — Google review
Most important archeological museum of Switzerland. For history lovers, this place is a treasure trove. The museum is spacious and offers tranquility. There are creative spaces for children and interactive games available.
Angelica S — Google review
Very nice museum. Its collection items range from the medieval periods to deep prehistory (bottom floor to top), but you come here of course for the world-famous late-Celtic period named after this site, La Tène. Access to the museum is easy, with a low-cost parking nearby (the port). When I visited during lunchtime, mid-June, I think I was the only visitor. The magnificent iron tools and weapons (and all the rest) are very well described, and sometimes reconstructed. Sadly, text is only displayed in two local languages (German and French)- it would have been far more logical to have just one local language (French), and English. My second gripe is this tendency to display with heavily contrasting lights. We have a spot here and there in mostly dark, cavernous rooms- a recipe for eye fatigue. When in a museum, I want to read it like a book, with even lightening plse. Worse, the texts were often in the dark, with small print and very hard to read. Also, I was often confused as to where items had been found (each, or each set should have its mini-map and discovery date).

Reformed church
Collegiate Church, located next to the Chateau de Neuchatel, is a Gothic church dating back to the 12th century. The climb up to the church offers a rewarding view over the town and Lake Neuchatel. While currently undergoing renovations, its most striking feature is its beautiful ceiling. The church's multi-colored roof tiles are particularly impressive. Visitors can find solace in its calming garden and enjoy music by a talented organist during Sunday services.
The Collegiate in Neuchâtel is a must-see spot, offering a beautiful combination of history and scenic views. This expansive site features stunning stained glass windows and a captivating atmosphere inside the church. The walk to the Collegiate is pleasant, with both stair and wheelchair access available. The location, adjacent to the castle, provides a picturesque medieval architecture experience. Perfect for a picnic, there are benches where you can relax and enjoy the view. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Neuchâtel.

Castle
Neuchâtel Castle, a hilltop fortress dating back to the 11th century, offers interior tours, exhibits, and breathtaking panoramic views of the city. This national historic monument is a must-visit attraction in Neuchâtel. The grand castle boasts stunning prehistoric architecture and captivating interiors that have made it popular among travelers. Situated at the eastern end of a ridge overlooking the city, the castle features two courtyards and is adjacent to the Gothic church Collegiale.
You can reach the castle with a short hike. The view and architecture are aesthetically very satisfying and ethereal. If you go at a time when the sun is shining, an incredibly beautiful atmosphere awaits you in the courtyard. Unfortunately, the church was closed when we went, but it was enough for us to explore the surroundings and we enjoyed it sooo much.
Şebnem — Google review
A great hike with spectacular views! Take the stairs upwards and a lil hike to enjoy a panoramic view over the brown edges of ancient buildings! A beautiful garden up there as well with Daffodils growing 🌼
Dina H — Google review
Lovely church and walls where you can stroll around freely. Castle hosts the local government and is you can come in via a 45min guided tour at 2,3,4 & 5pm for 5CHF per person. Recommend visiting the church interior and a pretty little garden to the left of the church, it's apparently maintained by a very good gardener.
Dávid V — Google review
Beautiful views over the city and lake. Easily accessible and worth the walk up a slight hill.
Catherine M — Google review
Interesting experience where you visit a medieval castle that is presently also a government building. You can only go in the courtyard and take picture for free but with 5 CHF you will be given a guided tour for about 30 to 45 mins. The ticket can be bought from receptions located in the office just the left after you pass the wooden entrance gate. My tour was small so it was only for ~30 mins. The guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and spoke good English. You will be guided starting from the outside of the castle for short history lesson about the building and then into some of the rooms inside: historical rooms that are repurposed into court room, parliament room and meeting rooms. Tips: Please note the specification timeslots where the tour was conducted (different for different part of the years).
Eric L — Google review
Unfortunately has been vandalised with free palestain titles. In fact - gorgeous historical catholic building
Niketas C — Google review
Neuchatel is a very beautiful atmospheric city of Switzerland on the shore of a lake with its own castle and very cozy streets
Valeriy V — Google review
Kind of boring and disappointing. Like, it looks really amazing from the train as you pass through the city but when you stop and go in there it just seems to be some government functions operating inside. There is a guided tour of the castle available but the timing did not allow. Would be nice if there was at least a little something that was possible self-guided.

Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel is a must-visit for art and literature enthusiasts. It showcases the remarkable paintings and written works of Friedrich Dürrenmatt, offering a glimpse into the life and creativity of this renowned Swiss writer and painter. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, events, concerts, and discussions. Visitors can appreciate the collection's curatorial style while enjoying stunning views of Lake Neuchatel from the museum's great architecture.
I made a spontaneous stop here after visiting the adjacent botanical gardens. I loved the collection and curatorial style of this museum. A collection of works by Martin Disler (another Swiss artist, contemporary to Dürrenmat) was on display, and they went very well together with Dürrenmat's works in the permanent collection. They both dealt with haunting, mystical topics and figures. Add to that the great architecture and views of Neuchâtel lake, and you get an outstanding experience.

Restaurant Le Silex offers a modern setting with beautiful lake views, serving delectable French-inspired fish and meat dishes. The establishment boasts a spacious patio where patrons can enjoy their meals while admiring the marina in front of them. Additionally, the restaurant's location provides unobstructed vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains. With excellent service that is both prompt and polite, guests are sure to have a delightful dining experience.
We had a reservation for the Silex. The view from the terrace was nice, especially if you like boats, since the marina is right in front of the Silex. But behind it there is the lake and the mountains and practically no buildings to obstruct the view. The service was very nice, quick and courteous. The food was really delicious and although the portions were small, it was enough to be full at the end.

It's a good way to pass an hour or so and is free of charge. There are outdoor tables and seating, looking onto the gardens, which are small but pleasant. The cafe has very little choice of food so best take your own. The lady working there was not very friendly. Many of the signs and texts about the plants are only in French which is a shame. Very small car park. You can wall there from town but it's up a steep hill.

Terrible. You have your order and the next several seconds it’s “done”. However in fact it’s not! I hate when personal is doing that. They just push the button to complete the order as soon as possible. But from customer perspective it’s an awful lie and you are left with no true indication about the status of your order.

Edward — Google review
So disappointed with the service today. English McDonald's needs to show the Swiss what the service and food should be like. I only ordered a apple pie, MC flurry and a large cappuccino. Five staff looking lost. Not busy took over 10 mins and the MC flurry had hardly any topping, the apple pie was broken and leaking and the cappuccino large ..well......under half a cup. Sorry not happy
Neil T — Google review
Typical for a McDonald's. You know what you are going to get, and you know the food is bad for you, and kids are mostly interested in the toy anyway. It's nice that you can order from the big touch screens and look at the menu items and take your time. They stopped offering Carrots in the happy meal as an alternative to fries, what's up with that? You can pick the boy or the girl menu, it doesn't always make any difference depending on what then toys are that week.
Brian S — Google review
They served a small cup of tap water very reluctantly saying they would make an exception this time....my friend had just paid for his meal as well. It's scandalous that a huge corporation like McDonald's won't serve a cup tap water...

Ils se sont permis de facturer 180 CHF pour des travaux de peinture alors qu'il est mentionné sur l'état des lieux de sortie que tout est en ordre, c'est donc illégal. Ne louez pas avec eux si vous souhaitez revoir votre caution !

(Translated by Google) Extremely disappointed with the lack of professionalism of this agency! After telling us yes for an apartment, 2 hours later they called us to refuse supposedly because of our dog. Funny excuse especially since all the neighbors have dogs. After calling the owner directly, he told me that dogs were accepted in his apartments! They could have been honest from the start and not led us in circles.

(Translated by Google) The inventory of fixtures at entry was done in a glacial and robotic manner. The prices for each service, including our names on the bell, which we are forced to take, are very expensive and we have to fight against incompetent and unmotivated employees for the slightest petcad. What are they for? Warning: during the inventory of fixtures at the exit, they tried to charge us 900 francs for a freezer part which should have already been replaced by them and to screw security bars to the windows...

(Translated by Google) This management has never reacted to my various letters; I specify that the owner resided in the building and that she was targeted by my comments; maybe this explains it... The agency's offices are located in a building equipped with an intercom and opening hours are rather limited compared to other agencies. Very cold attitude of the staff (one dedicated employee and one person in training) during the exit inventory.

We believe we are victims of homophobia, we have reported this several times to this management via registered messages which have remained unanswered. The association for the defense of LGBT+ rights in the canton of Vaud VOGAY also sought to contact this management via registered mail which also remained unanswered. We have the right to be treated as human, and this way of ignoring us for more than a year and finally expelling us because we display a peace flag deeply shocks us. Historical landmark
Nestled in the charming city of Neuchâtel, the Tour des Prisons stands as a captivating remnant of medieval architecture. This historic prison tower, which functioned until 1850, is located near the impressive Neuchâtel Castle and offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its four floors and two ancient cells. Although my recent visit was brief due to time spent at the beach, I couldn't help but admire this landmark from afar while dreaming of returning for a more leisurely exploration.

It is clearly visible if you go up to the collegiate cathedral, and it is also visible from above. They write that it offers a panoramic view of the city. But on the weekend when we arrived in Neuchâtel, the entrance to the tower was closed. August 2022. It was my second visit at MHNN, this time the temporary exposition was about dinosaurs. I visited the museum for free on a Wednesday afternoon. I'd say the main focus were children, but still very entertaining. Unfortunately no translation to English. Parts of the permanent exposition were closed, seemed to be that there was some damage to it. I wish they had some prints available at the shop. There were some of the originals, but a bit too much for my budget 🥲
