San Giovanni Al Sepolcro, also known as the Temple of the Holy Sepulcher, is a captivating 12th-century Norman church located in Brindisi's historic center. This enchanting site is a priceless historical gem that holds countless human stories within its walls. Visitors can explore the Roman ruins beneath the temple and learn about its significance during the Crusades and Roman period. The helpful guides provide valuable insights into the Templars and medieval history, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts.
This church was built at the end of the 11th Century AC by a Norman King who was returning from a Crusade, as Brindisi's harbor was the main departure point to Middle East during the age of the Crusaders (1096-1291). The interior is designed in the shape of a "horse shoe" with eight columns in concentric circle, just like the Cathedral of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. According to nowadays standards the temple is not a tall building, so it's not visible from distance. Actually, all the buildings around are taller. Anyway it well worth visiting, especially for the marble lions supporting the entrance pillars, for the indoor wall paint, partially visible and for the green patio, where the visitors could admire some beautiful orange and lemon trees, as well as ancient tombstones, some of them dating back from Roman era. Visited the place in January and the citrus trees in the patio were full of ripe fruits.

Fascinating little piece of history being at the beginning of the Crusaders Trail and the poker Jerusalem, Jerusalem small quick and easy and a nice little piece of history

An amazing experience that I highly recommend to all those who love history. The place is a priceless historical jewel enriched with many amazing human stories engraved in every inch of the building. At first I entered and besides appreciating the old building I couldn't understand its meaning. I asked the gentleman from whom I bought the ticket (€3) if he could give me some information. After helping some other tourists he came to me. I thought that maybe he was going to tell me a sentence or two. But this gentleman explained to me all the history from the time it was built in 1743 till the last additions to the ceiling that were recently added. He related such an amazing story with so much passion that I was feeling transported away to the times of the templars who built this place to pray before leaving for Jerusalem. He explained about the columns, their alignment, why one seems to be inclined, the three different layers of frescoes and what they show, how they used to be painted on fresh Mata, the doors, the altar, the engraved signs on the outside walls, the mosaic flooring and everything else. I am so grateful to this gentleman. I thank him as he truly made my visit an amazing one.

This is a very small Church set in the very center of old town Brindisi. It was built in the 11c by a Norman prince who returned from the Crusade. Right away, it became a pilgrimage praying place for those heading to Holy Land and thanking place for those who returned safe. The Church has a circular layout, modeled after the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem with 8 columns inside and 13 c frescoes
Dejan B — Google review
The garden in the back was beautiful. I'd say worth checking it out.

Cost 3 eu to enter only partial frescos are visible, only takes 15 minutes to see the inside, the history of this church is very interesting.

The Monumento al Marinaio d'Italia in Brindisi is a must-visit, offering a rich historical experience and breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The surrounding park adds to its charm, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sound of the waves. From the base with its crypt to the top with an unforgettable view, every aspect is beautiful. Visitors can explore various rooms displaying different artifacts, making the 3 euro ticket worth it.
Cool views from the top of the monument, if you go down by foot you will find several rooms with different artifacts displayed. Ticket was 3 euros, worth it! Chapel is free, and located at the bottom, very beautiful.

Spectacular national monument in the form of a giant rudder. Originally constructed in honour of the sailors lost when the Italian naval vessel 'Benedetto Brin" suffered a catastrophic explosion in Brindisi Port during the First World War, it later became recognised as the national naval monument. In its' present form, it is adorned with a statue of the Virgin Mary, the symbology of an earlier time in the history of the nation having long since been removed.

It's a beautiful place, sadly on both visits, one in June 2025 and one in October 2025, it was not possible to visit the monument dude to Building Works in progress. The museum at the bottom is open and very interesting. Please let us know when the monument reopens.

Unfortunately when we arrived the tower was closed for unknown reasons and we couldn't go up to see the view. But down below the tower there is a chapel dedicated to sailors and we visited that. There is no entrance fee to that chapel. The view of the city from the coast is very beautiful, there is a promenade.

Well worth visiting. Free entry and tour from local volunteers. Tour only takes about 10mins. Memorial to the Italian dead of WWI and WW2. Strange to think that fascist dictator stood on this spot in his pomp addressing the masses.

Palazzo Granafei Nervegna, a Renaissance-style building with Baroque influences, is a must-see in Brindisi's historic center. It houses art exhibitions and often hosts free events. The museum inside allows you to explore the city's cultural heritage and features an ancient Roman column. Visitors can also enjoy the shade and excellent coffee at the museum's cafe. Additionally, the gift shop offers unique handmade local souvenirs.
Multi function location serving as a museum, conference hall and used by the University. There is no guide on where to go so feel free to explore as it's free. Allow around 30 minutes to visit.

A beautiful historical building in the heart of Brindisi! The architecture is elegant, and it’s a lovely place to wander and soak in the atmosphere. We enjoyed a refreshing lemon soda at the café inside, sitting under the tree shade with a pleasant breeze — the perfect break during our walk. Peaceful, charming, and well worth a visit!

Not only is the imposing capital quintessential for understanding Brindisi's cultural heritage, the public nature of the building means that it often hosts free events, many of which need to be booked by calling the Info Point office in the same building. The gift shop is the best place in the city to buy unique, handmade, local, interesting souvenirs.

Castle
Castello Alfonsino di Brindisi, also known as the Aragonese Castle or Fort at Sea, is a striking red brick fortress situated on an island facing the port of Brindisi. Accessible by boat, it is located on the Island of Sant'Andrea and comprises two fortresses - a triangular one overlooking the open sea and a circular one housing a small hidden port.
What a fantastic place to visit, so much history connected to the castle. Richard our tour guide provided so much information connected to the castle and how over the years the castle had been occupied by so many from the middle ages to the Italian Naval Marines occupying the structure until 1983 then abandoned until excavation work by archaeologist eventually opening the place up for guided tours. Highly recommend a visit
Nicola J — Google review
I highly recommend this place! Great point to start your tour in Brindidi, very interesting history, greatly told by the guide (Richard greetings!) we have been listening the stories with huge curiosity, it is so interesting. In addition, there are beautiful views there. definitely worth it! You can get there by bus no. 4 or 5 from the city center :)

START YOUR TRIP HERE!! it's a great journey across the history embedded in an interesting castle. You will hear the stories that would help you blend in and understand the place you are visiting. It's Interesting! Really keeps you involved through whole time, not to mention the guys are making incredible work to make the most out of this place. The story is actually way more interesting than most of the places as such, the location offers nice views,. History - mistetious stories, the guides - charisma and sincere dedication to the place. Make an effort and definitely give it a try. It's really really worth it. Most of all it's just a "Story of the area(and the city) in a very nice and digestible form.

Fantastic place to visit. Only recently opened as a tourist site but they have done a fantastic job. We had a great tour guide. I hope they can invest further in making it even better to visit - fascinating castle and history.
Conor M — Google review
Definitely worth the time and money if you're into the history and fortification subject. The size of hallways and 'rooms' is amazing. The guide, with passion, offers a history of how the castle/fort has been evolving over the, showing what when and why was changed or damaged. The spot is worth visiting also for the photos, especially as stated in other comments - in the sunset. The place has been open for tourists back in December 2024, still some areas are out of reach for visitors but hopefully it will change in a couple of years - honestly we're planning to come back for a revisit then. The staff there is responsive and very helpful - our visit got moved by an hour because of weather conditions and we (me and my partner) ended up being the only ones for the last tour with the guide on the day. Guys, kudos to you for your time and dedication :)
Adam K — Google review
Extremely disappointing. We had booked a guided tour of the castle in English and arrived there to find that it was in Italian only. We were given a map of the castle website to visit on our phones, with half a dozen short commentaries about the castle, in English. We couldn’t even walk around freely without the guide, so we spent the whole time following him and listening to his commentary in a language we didn’t understand. Another non Italian-speaking couple (Belgians) were equally disappointed. A guided tour in English should be exactly that - someone delivering a guided tour in English!

Museo Archeologico Francesco Ribezzo, located near the Cathedral Basilica of San Giovanni Battista in Brindisi, is a treasure trove of archaeological relics. Established in 1884, it houses an impressive collection including bronze statues, stone carvings, ornate crockery and artifacts dating back to the Roman Empire and beyond. The museum offers a wonderful touring experience with English descriptions available for most exhibits.
Surprisingly superb and was free on my entry. The organisation of the exhibits, isn't exactly as I would expect (Chronological order or completely specific locations), but it makes some sense. There is pretty much everything from Nethanderals, Neolithic, Greek ceramic imports, Italian Greeks, and Romans. The collection blows away many museums around the world. The bronzes, although in poor condition from their time in the sea, are amazing. There isn't a huge amount of stone sculptures, but they are represented. If you're in Brindisi, I would recommend spending the time visiting.

It's a great museum to drop by! Worthwhile your visit, either short or long. And free entrance, so no reason not to have a look at 2500 years of civilization displayed here.

Ancient Ruins
Area Archeologica di San Pietro degli Schiavoni is a hidden gem beneath the theater, offering a glimpse into the historical past of Brindisi. The site features Roman villa ruins, streets, and baths, providing an extraordinary perspective on the lives of ancient inhabitants. Information cards in Italian and English help visitors understand the significance of the excavations. This tranquil and meditative place allows you to time travel through Brindisi's history.
Ingenious method of preserving this 60 meter plus section of Roman road and portions of a domus, bath and other quarters. The entire theater above is supported by long steel beams that allow room to present the ruins, including a raised catwalk and many information stations along the path. Since the entry is all but hidden and only one small plaque announces the ruins, it's not clear how many locals born after the 1980s - when the theater was finished - are even aware this gem exists. I walked right in and was the only visitor for more than an hour. It was free that day but it's not clear if there's a fee at other times.
Andy — Google review
It's free, they sometimes close for the afternoon, so you have to get there either early or later in the afternoon. It's kind of fascinating to see that they built the entire building over top of the ruins.
Norm Y — Google review
We only found this because the curator at the Sepulchre gave us a map and pointed out that it is below the theatre. You are able to walk all around the site on grills looking down into the ruins of a Roman Villa, street and baths. Information cards are in Italian and English so you know what you are looking at if you understand those languages. Brindisi tourist board could promote this more. Although it is free it's worth a charge of €2-3 to help maintain such interesting places. Guides from the port include this in their walking tours €10 so you can maybe hear about it in other languages. We loved this surprise discovery.

(Translated by Google) An important testimony of the Roman period is the Archaeological Area of San Pietro degli Schiavoni. The site is located beneath the Nuovo Teatro Comunale Verdi, in the historic center of the city. The archaeological discovery occurred in conjunction with a series of land excavation works in the early 1960s, during which part of the walls of the ancient Roman city were destroyed. After the intervention of archaeologists, the project which included the construction of the Palace of Justice was replaced by the construction of the Verdi Theatre, a steel structure capable of seating 1700 people. The construction suspended over the archaeological excavations allowed for better conservation of the area and made them accessible to the public. The area of approximately 4,800 square meters represents a neighborhood of the Roman city crossed by a paved road with the remains of domus and a spa facility. The buildings were attributable to private domus, characterized by fine mosaic floors or tiles placed in a herringbone pattern, this in the eastern part of the street. Those on the western part have simpler floors and were probably spaces intended for public buildings, warehouses and shops. If you like discovery and history I advise you not to miss the visit, it is completely FREE (Original) Un’ importante testimonianza del periodo romano è l’Area Archeologica di San Pietro degli Schiavoni.

(Translated by Google) Anyone interested in Roman-era excavations has come to the right place. The wide street and the house foundations are impressive. It's also remarkable that the entire museum was built over them. It's a shame there's no German description available.

(Translated by Google) In my opinion, it's an ugly structure; it should be demolished and the archaeological excavations should be valorized. A theater in neoclassical style could be built in the city's historic center. There are many Brutalist buildings in Brindisi, so it's a shame to be aesthetically unattractive.
