The Great Synagogue of Edirne, also known as the Edirne Great Synagogue, is a significant historical site in Edirne, Turkey. Constructed in the late 19th century, it stands as one of Europe's largest synagogues and boasts a distinctive architectural style that blends Ottoman and European influences. This Moorish revival-styled synagogue once accommodated a thriving Jewish community of around 20,000 people.
It is a hidden gem in Edirne. It is one of the best restoration works in this country. After all synagogues burned down in great fire of Edirne, they decided to build one new, bigger synagogue. However, when the community leaves the area it is left unattended and almost completely destroyed. Luckily they made a good job in restoration and this nice place looking great again. There is a museum behind it and nowadays there is anne frank exhibition inside of it. I would recommend visiting it after you see the synagogue.
Ali A — Google review
The most important feature of this mansion is that it is the largest synagogue in Türkiye.
Baran A — Google review
The Grand Synagogue of Edirne was constructed by a French architect in 1909 and it was meant to replace all 13 synagogues which were burnt in The Big Fire of 1905. The original building was almost ruined over the last century but it was restored and opened for the public in 2014. Now this beautiful building can be freely visited and enjoyed by tourists.
Anastas I — Google review
Amazing place, rebuilt and new. it is worth seeing. I was interesting for me, became I have never been before in a synagogue. Behind the building is the art gallery and museum ( connected to the synagogue).
Veselin B — Google review
This synagogue is free it's like museum mostly but once a week people come and worship in the place.
Umed S — Google review
This beautiful place is one that is not often mentioned in trips to Edrine, yet is a sight worth the 5 minutes walk from the end of the main street. The restoration is great, I only find it weirdly difficult to get there, and kind of confusing. Approach from north-west to find the entrance.
Marin K — Google review
An interesting history and a beautiful restoration of the religious building. İ was surprised at it size and the restoration work based on the amount and f damage that this structure had endured.
Suzanne H — Google review
Ottoman era Synagogue built by Sultan Abdul Hamid for the large jewish population of Edirne (AKA Adrianapole). Currently closed to the tourists. Hopefully you can visit in a very short time. Marvelous architecture.

The Complex Of Bayezid II Health Museum, located in a historic complex, offers a fascinating insight into ancient medicine and treatment. It is the only museum that truly represents an Ottoman Darussifa today, highlighting the significance of hospitals in medical history. The museum brings to life the 15th-century medical madrasa and course environment with lifelike mannequins, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of medical education during that time.
Very interesting site, about a health advanced school, one of the most important in middle ages..
Robert E — Google review
The Complex of Bayezid II Health Museum in Edirne really impressed me with how advanced and thoughtful it was for its time. Originally built in the late 15th century as part of the Bayezid II Mosque complex, it served as a hospital and medical school. What I found fascinating was how they treated both physical and mental illnesses using a mix of music therapy, water sounds, and herbal remedies. The architecture is beautiful, with serene courtyards and domed rooms that create a peaceful atmosphere. Visiting the museum gave me a new appreciation for how holistic and humane healthcare could be centuries ago.

Awesome place, beautiful architecture, historical. The missing star is for restrooms present, but locked up (on a buzzy Sunday!!)

In my opinion one of the best places to learn about old lifestyle of Turks is this in Edirne and the best place in Edirne after Selimiye Mosque. The place which brings you to more than 500 years back to Ottoman Empire times exactly to the Bayazıt 2nd time. Everything about type of life they had back in times. Kitchen complex the way of preparing foods, baking breads and their place of eating, How they washed their dirty staff, also a very large complex about medicine 💊 and health, how to make new types of drugs for ill people 🤒, psychological services, of course with its mosque in the middle of the territory.
Umed S — Google review
This place is very much worth the admission fee and a great place to visit in your Edirne visit. It had ample signs with both Turkish and English descriptions. Everything was thoughtfully set up and it felt like a great museum experience as good as those I’ve had back home in US. The building itself and the history is just magnificent and leaves a great impression on you

This place is amazing and so informative about medicine , doctors and the instruments they used for surgery and treatment of people around 500 yeras ago. The place maintened very well , every room has it's own information. The mosque near the school is fabulous. I recommend definitely to everyone to visit here

Edirne Palace, located in Turkey near the borders of Greece and Bulgaria, is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts. This vast archaeological area showcases the ruins of Ottoman architecture dating back to the 15th century. The city offers a diverse range of attractions including iconic landmarks such as the Selimiye Mosque and the historic Edirne Palace, once the largest palace of the Ottoman period.

The place was ruins and many homeless people around the walls. I did not feel safe. I suggest using a car to visit the ruins because it’s huge and stretches over a long distance. I just managed to film parts of it riding a bus from grand bazaar to zeitunburnu. I only can imagine how massive was it sit its days!

(Translated by Google) One of the greatest treasures of Edirne is undoubtedly the Edirne Palace. Built as one of the most magnificent structures after Topkapı Palace during the Ottoman capital period, this palace was unfortunately abandoned to its fate over time. The ruins that remain today are only a small shadow of that great magnificence. Are We Aware of Its Historical Value? Edirne Palace was a living indicator of the Ottoman state administration, art, culture and architecture. This area, where the sultans stayed, where great invitations were held and which was at the heart of palace life, hosted many important events throughout history. But unfortunately, most of this huge structure has disappeared today. It is difficult to imagine the magnificence of the past while walking among the ruins of the palace. Restoration is a Must The biggest deficiency here is that restoration has not been done. Bringing Edirne Palace to light as it deserves will contribute greatly not only to the city's historical heritage but also to our country's. With the right restoration and protection work, an impressive place can be created for both tourists and history enthusiasts. The discovery of this palace increases the tourism potential of Edirne and provides a better understanding of cultural values. And most importantly, we fulfill our responsibility to protect our history. Heritage for the Future With restoration, Edirne Palace can regain its former glory. While walking in the palace, it is possible to return to the glorious days of the Ottoman Empire and live in history. This structure is not just stones and walls; it is also a living document that tells the lifestyle, art and state order of the past. Edirne Palace is a great historical and cultural value. But unfortunately, in its current state, it is far from that glory. For this reason, a comprehensive restoration must be carried out with the joint work of the authorities and the society. We must reveal the palace as it deserves and make it one of the brightest stars of Edirne. Let's not forget, history is our past, the most valuable legacy we leave to the future. The light of Edirne Palace must shine again.

(Translated by Google) The construction of the palace started in 1450 during the reign of Murat II. The construction of the palace, which stopped for a while after the death of the ruler, was completed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1475. It has been repaired many times since the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. The palace, which expanded with additions over time, was damaged as it was used less in the second half of the 18th century. It was devastated by the great earthquake in 1752 and the fire in 1776. The Palace, which was partially repaired in 1827, was used as a camp by the Russian forces occupying Edirne in 1829. It suffered the greatest damage during this period. Many buildings were saved during the repair period during the reign of Governor Hurşit Pasha and Hacı İzzet Pasha, but as the occupation forces approached the city in the Russian War of 1876-1877, the ammunition accumulated around Babüssaade was detonated to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Many structures of the Edirne Palace were also destroyed by this explosion. From the Edirne Palace, which is thought to consist of approximately 100 structures, only 11 structures have survived to the present day, including Babüssaade (Ak Ağalar Gate), Adalet Kasrı, Matbahı Amire (kitchen), water maksemi, Hunting Lodge, Namazgahlı fountain and Kum Kasrı bath. He said that on October 18, 2022, Edirne Palace was allocated to the Presidency of National Palaces by the Presidential decision for its restoration and revival. Yıldız stated that the excavation services in the area will continue during the work, that the studies planned for five years will be handled with an attitude towards understanding the historical and cultural characteristics of the capital city Edirne, and scientific work will be carried out based on documents.

Located near the Selimiye Mosque, Edirne Museum is a compact yet fascinating attraction that offers a change of pace from the Ottoman monuments in the area. Established in 1925, it showcases artifacts from various eras including the Bronze Age, Roman and Byzantine periods in Edirne and Eastern Thrace. The museum features exhibitions from Greek and Roman times, as well as the Byzantine era, providing insight into cultural traditions during the Ottoman period.
The exhibition begins with the carpet gallery at the entrance. In the great hall, there are Edirnekari closet, Edirne bride's room, Turkish bath corner, Edirne dining room, Şarköy carpets, plaster sample of Edirne house cloth, various embroideries and clothes, jewelry, laces and artifacts donated by individuals. Outside, in the courtyard, is the archeology department. Here are column capitals, sculptures from the Hellenistic, Roman and Eastern Roman periods, as well as ponds and birdhouses, which are related to aquaculture from the Ottoman period.

Very disappointing experience. The museum closed at 17.00, even though it is still summer. They also wouldn't accept euro or leva or payment by card, only turkish lira. There was no place to exchange money near by and no parking offered.

Beautiful museum, small and humble yet it has pretty nice artifacts, it talks mainly about the history of Edirne and the region of Thrace, overall it was pretty good.

The museum is lovely - it contains exhibitions dating mainly from the Greek and Roman era, alongside the Byzantine epoch. They've also showcased some key aspects of the cultural dogmas throughout the Ottoman era. It's a compact museum, but it contains a lot of interesting artifacts and most importantly the information given is in Turkish, alongside English, which is great for anyone visiting! I highly recommend :)

Muradiye Mosque, originally part of a Mevlevi dervish complex, boasts stunning tile work, particularly in the mihrab. The mosque has undergone multiple repairs due to earthquakes and its minaret was rebuilt in 1957. Built by Ottoman Sultan Murad II in the 1520s and 1530s, it offers a serene atmosphere for visitors.

Nestled within the historic Selimiye Complex, the Selimiye Foundation Museum is a captivating destination that showcases a rich collection of artifacts from local mosques. Originally the Darul Kurra Madrasa, this beautifully restored site offers visitors an immersive experience reminiscent of traditional madrasa life. Inside, you'll find an array of displays featuring exquisite metalwork, intricate tiles, elegant calligraphy, and wooden artifacts alongside historical clocks.
The traditional ceramics and tiles collection is outstanding. The museum is free. Unbelievable...

(Translated by Google) Edirne II. Visiting Bayezid Complex was an incredible experience for me. As someone who is interested in both history and architecture, this place really impressed me. This social complex, built in the 15th century, was built by Sultan II. One of the most important works of Bayezid. It is possible to see all the elegance of Ottoman architecture here. The madrasa, bathhouse, mosque and especially the healing center were the places that impressed me the most. The hospital is a great place to understand the understanding of medicine of the period. It is said that patients were treated here with the sound of water and music! It is now used as a museum and when you enter you immediately feel the atmosphere of that period. The entrance fee is quite affordable, and it is an informative place that appeals to people of all ages. It has a calm and peaceful atmosphere that can be visited with the family. The Social Complex is a must-see place for everyone who comes to Edirne, because it is very rich in terms of both history and culture. (Original) Edirne II. Bayezid’in en önemli eserlerinden biri.

(Translated by Google) A very good social complex... I especially liked the health museum and the interior of the mosque... It was built by architect Hayrettin, a student of Mimar Sinan... The marble workmanship on the pulpit and the revolving columns on the mihrab are very impressive and must be seen... (Original) Cok iyi bir külliye...ozellikle saglik muzesine ve xaminin icini cok begendim...mimar sinanin ogrencisi mimar hayrettin tarafindan yapilmis...minberdeki mermer usciligi ve mihraptaki döner sütunlar cok etkileyici ve gorulmesi gerek...

Nestled just a stone's throw from the Uc Serefeli Mosque, the Macedonian Tower (Makedonya Kulesi) stands as a proud remnant of Edirne's storied past. This robust round tower is the last intact piece of the city's ancient walls, which date back to Roman times and were later expanded during the Byzantine era.
This is how it look for now 18/05/20024

Well located, really easy to get there. But I was disappointed when I entered the historical area. Because it was really dirty and careless. That's a shame of Edirne. Everywhere rubbish and some texts on historical wall which been written by sprays. I sincerely think that it has to be more protected and hope that it will be restored as soon as possible. That was a pity to see this old Byzantium monument like this.
Metin Y — Google review
The Macedonian Tower is located in the center of Edirne. She is Byzantine. There are other archeological remains around it. Part of the walls are from the time of the ancient Thracians. Admission is free. There are not enough explanatory signs. It is slightly neglected. The tower cannot be accessed.

Eski Ulu Camii, also known as the Old Grand Mosque, is a significant historical landmark in Edirne. Constructed between 1403-1414, it boasts a unique architectural style that combines Ottoman and Byzantine influences. The interior walls are adorned with impressive calligraphy, creating a serene atmosphere that appeals to history and architecture enthusiasts. This early 15th-century mosque features nine domes supported by four columns and has been serving the city since its completion.
The Old Mosque (Turkish: Eski Camii), also known as Grand Mosque (Turkish: Ulucami), is an early 15th-century Ottoman mosque in Edirne. It was built from the order of Emir Süleyman, and completed under the rule of his brother, Sultan Mehmet I. The mosque is located in the historical center of the city, near the market and close to other prominent historical mosques, Selimiye Mosque and Üç Şerefeli Mosque. The mosque is covered by 9 domes supported on four columns. The mosque had originally a single minaret, the taller one was later built by Murat II. The mosque without a courtyard is entered through three doors. Inside the mosque large calligraphy works can be seen. It is open to visitors and prayers, and the entrance is free. Please keep in mind that you need to take off your shoes by the entrance.

An ottoman mosque in Edirne. So huge and contains the Kaaba door cover of 1988.

A beautiful mosque, but need uplighters to showcase the decorations under the dome. Very dark, even during the day. All information are in Turkish. Not friendly to tourists. Best to introduce English. Am sure many English speaking Turks are willing to assist
Nazli A — Google review
Beautiful mosque with an interesting and rather eclectic combination of styles and motifs. The calligraphy is particularly beautiful.
