The Old Venetian Port of Chania is a historic harbor that dates back to the 13th century and was used for trade by the Venetians and Ottomans. The bustling waterfront is filled with fish restaurants offering stunning views of the port and its elegant antique lighthouse. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the harbor, savoring seafood meze or grilled octopus while admiring the picturesque setting.
What a beautiful place to visit. We wound our way through the many alleyways of lovely shops selling everything you could imagine them the Port just appeared in front of you. So much to do and see. We took an hours boat trip, which stopped offshore and you could swim with and feed the fishes. Their is a great choice of bars and restaurants to have food and drinks at. Try the Chicken Gyros, delicious. Some fab photo opportunities, as well as a Maritime Museum. A lovely way 6o spend a day, a must visit.

Really busy Lots of tavernas to choose from. Selling lovely Cretan dishes. Great shops down tiny little streets. Beautiful handmade wares. Stunning scenery in the little streets and across the harbour.. Well worth a day trip. Boat cruises for hire too.
Dawn C — Google review
Well worth a visit. I would suggest trying to get there early morning for breakfast and a walk. Late morning it was absolutely heaving with fierce competition for seats in the harbour restaurants. A walk into the harbour and along the outer harbour wall is a great experience set aside at least an hour to do the walk both ways. A number of places advertised real Greek food, but to be honest, the fare on offer was pretty similar in terms of an "intetnational" menu. The exception to this were a few better quality restaurants just on the edge of the main drag.
Ray B — Google review
This place is absolute magic. The history of nearly 5000 years of civilization is on fully display here. The old Venetian port area is beautiful, restaurants are fantastic and the people are very friendly. Will definitely visit again!
Gagan A — Google review
Have been there 7 years ago, returned again for good wibes and memories. It's a gemstone of Venetian architecture with a bit of Ottoman influence, some ruination after WWII and flavours of Greek cuisine. Definitely worth a visit and a walk, if you're on the Crete island. Save couple of hours to stroll in the labyrinth of the narrow streets, wonder in the shops, savour some local food! Just enjoy it!
Julia B — Google review
Clear clean water. The lighthouse. Views that one is not tired to make photos enough in any time of day. From land or when you get out with the glass bottom boat. I let here some of my photos. Enjoy..... And go to see by yourself. You will be astonished and happy relaxed all the time you are here.
Louanna N — Google review
Chania is an absolute must visit. Beautiful old harbour. Lots of fabulous shops, restaurants, bars. Those around the harbour front are no more expensive than the ones in the maze of streets behind. The streets behind have a great vibe both day and night. Chania is services by a great bus station with buses running into the early morning to outlying areas like Kato Stalis, Agia Marina, Platanias and much further. There is a wonderful fort to visit and the whole area is very safe. I just love it ❤️

Archaeological museum
Museum
Nestled in the charming district of Halepa, the Archaeological Museum of Chania stands as a beacon of Crete's rich cultural heritage. This remarkable museum showcases an extensive array of artifacts that trace the island's history from the Neolithic period through to Roman times. Visitors can explore treasures unearthed from ancient sites like Kydonia and Aptera, offering a glimpse into Crete’s storied past.
New, open modern museum layout that we spent 1.5 hours wandering through. Downstairs has 3 large rooms/sections for the permanent exhibitions, which is where we spent most of our time. The downstairs temporary exhibit was closed when we were there, and the upstairs Mitsotakis collection is a small room able to be viewed in 10 minutes. Signs available in English and Greek throughout, with an audio guide also available (though we passed as the signs were great). What makes this museum unique is their recreations using authentic objects, such as a kitchen, illustrious warriors grave, and the 365 AD earthquake. Most museums provide the objects, sign, and diagrams, but they displayed it as it would’ve been which gave extra context. They also had great small touches like presenting coins so that you can see both sides, and used a non-reflective glass so it’s a LOT easier to see and take photos of the objects. (Whoever curated and displayed these rooms did an excellent job with the details!) Similar to other museums, will also see a lot of pottery, figurines, jewelry, and more. Air conditioning: Is inside. We felt comfortable throughout when around 28-30C outside. Access: Both a lift and stairs are available between the floors. Cafe: More of a fancy restaurants vs. quick museum eats. It’s table service only, upscale/pricy, and a little slow (compared to other museums, not restaurants). The views are absolutely superb, and the small pancake with mizithra cheese snack we had was excellent - but not quite what we expected when heard there was a cafe. Lockers: Available for free (it seemed) near the ground floor toilets. Toilets: Nice, clean on ground floor. Shop: Small shop. A little pricy for some items, but interesting books and kids items.
Becky T — Google review
It is an absolute treasure trove of history and culture. Nestled in the beautiful district of Chalepa, the museum’s architecture alone is worth the visit—modern, elegant, and thoughtfully designed to reflect the layers of civilization it houses. Inside, the exhibits are beautifully curated, offering a fascinating journey through Crete’s rich past. From Minoan artifacts to Roman relics, each piece is presented with care and context. The layout is spacious and intuitive, making it easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed. Highly recommend spending at least two here during the day skipping beach on 30C summer days.
Brokulee — Google review
Excellent museum! Building looks new. Parking is on-site and free. Ticket price is €15 per adult which is more than some places but is absolutely worth every penny! Extensive inventory of exhibits going back to pre-history up to the Roman period. Lots and lots of pieces, videos, audio clips.... Staff were all forendly and helpful. Visiting exhibits very interesting too. Cafe upstairs is reasonably priced and serves good coffee and cake. 👍 You will be transported through time for at least two hours. If you are in west Crete you should really visit here.
Richard B — Google review
This very new museum is a real gem! It's modern style and well laid out presentation is both beautiful and appealing. The show cases are well organized with easy to follow descriptions. It presents time lines of the area through prehistoric times to the Roman period. As a ancient history buff this museum was really perfect for me. Beautiful displays and excellent, friendly staff. It is also worth the time to view the private collections on the second floor. There is a free parking lot at the left side of the entrance. It is wheel chair accessible. Highly recommend
TravelSpirit M — Google review
A great introduction to a historical look a the changing lives and culture of Chania. 4000BC to more modern times. Romans to Turkish rule. Lots in between. Bronze to steel. Clay to Glass 1st Century AD.
Jamie T — Google review
Newly purpose built museum with lots of ancient items to look at which are clearly labelled and neatly displayed. Lovely cafe with a terrace and a small gift shop. Plenty of parking when we were there.
Poppy J — Google review
Quite expensive for the size of the exhibition. Modern building with some parking lots on site. Barely any people when we visited Saturday midday in October. There’s the rooms on the ground floor then one small room above.
Jojo M — Google review
This place is mind-boggling from a perspective of treasured it holds - if you like early pottery mosaics and jewelry this is the place for you. If you speak English or Greek,DO use the free speaker unit. It has lots of extra information on it and means you can look at things while listening. Cafe view is stunning but the few food is subpar. Woman at the desk area would spend 10 to 20 minutes with each person repeating basic info which was kind of exhausting when made the waiting queue very long for five people ..

Gorgeous little museum about local craftsmanship, art and culture. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Well worth the small fee.

We loved the spot! A very cool and educational place that puts you back in history so you can better understand the way of living, tradition and culture!
Irena B — Google review
Visited this small folklore museum today (Thu 3rd July). What a fabulous little place for €4 p/p. The lovely lady on the ticket desk gave us lots of information and history of the museum. All the artifacts in thus museum have been donated by the people from Gavalochori. We were given a leaflet that gave us some information on each room in the museum, plus there were boards to read in each room. We probably spent an hour here. There was also a small courtyard where you can sit and a public toilet. This is a very small museum and not big enough for a pushchair/wheelchair. There are steps to climb to the 1st floor and some low doorways.

Nestled in Chania, the Greek National Football Team Museum stands out as a remarkable tribute to Greece's football legacy. This small yet captivating museum is dedicated exclusively to the national team and its storied history, particularly highlighting their unforgettable Euro 2004 victory. Visitors can explore an impressive array of memorabilia, including jerseys worn by players during pivotal matches and a replica of the coveted European Championship trophy.
Small museum, but packed with history. Signed shirts from incredible football players make it a must-visit for any fan. One of the best experiences we had in Chania. A big thank you to the owner for sharing stories from his amazing journey through the many matches he attended. And a special mention to all the signed Benfica shirts—from every Greek player who played for the club. Truly unforgettable!
Miguel M — Google review
Such a great place to visit while in Chania! The entrance is free but there’s so much to see for football fans. They have every national kit possible, the guy talked with us about everything they have and was such a sweetheart. He even charged our phone while there 🫶🏻 I wish we asked for his name. We are very very thankful! He promised they’ll have more souvenirs next year, hopefully we’ll visit again
Adina M — Google review
It was incredibly interesting – as a football fan I was hooked for a long time. And what a wonderful owner! His passion and dedication to his favorite business are simply top notch. He is very open and gladly shows and explains football history, with jerseys from matches and many other unique items. A must-visit for all football fans!

An incredible museum for all, even if you are not Greek, and even if you are not a football fan. The collection of (signed and/or match worn) memorabilia here is truly remarkable. Mr. Flekkas does a superb job at making every visitor feel welcome and also sharing his unique stories and experiences. I highly recommend this museum to all visitors to Crete!

A wonderful place for football fans. It's packed with souvenirs and memorabilia from various events, not only from Greece but also from other countries. It has original signed jerseys from all eras, also. Special mention: the owner. He's a lovely person who's always willing to talk about football and share experiences. 100% recommended⚽️

Firka Venetian Fortress, built in the mid-16th century, is a historical landmark located at the western tip of Chania's harbor. It was constructed as part of the Venetians' second wave of fortifications to protect against threats from pirates and the expanding Ottoman empire.
Passing through on the way to the beach and as well to a stunning Sunset. Wery well preserved.
Louanna N — Google review
The fortress on the northwest side of the old harbor of Chania was built by the Venetians against enemy threats and possible invasions. Cnstruction started around 1610. There isn't much to see but tou can see the barracks. There is also lookout tower, which you can climb to get a great picture of the harbour or out to sea. The Maritime Museum of Crete, is housed at the entrance of the Fortress.
Julie P — Google review
I enjoyed this place, didn't go into the fortress itself, but i was on top of it for a rest after walking around the area to enjoy the view and the music that was being played down by the pier. it was a majestic and lovely building to visit. The whole harbour and lighthouse are within the view, just be careful not to fall off thou
Luke L — Google review
Amazing view on Chania from the top viewpoint, otherwise very quick to walkthrough..the entrance is from the city not the parking lot, we spent 10 mins looking for it. 😅
Markéta V — Google review
Amazing due to its age, and pretty well curated. It's a fair distance from Chania, around 2 hours, although it's an interesting drive.

Located at the end of the old port, right in front of the lighthouse. It was part of a series of fortifications built by the Venetians in the late XVI century.

The Eleftherios Venizelos House, situated in Chalepa, Chania, is a significant historic house museum that pays tribute to the influential 20th-century Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos. This residence held great importance in his life, being his home for over three decades and witnessing pivotal moments such as his involvement in the Revolution of 1897. The museum showcases artifacts from Venizelos's life and offers insights into the history of Crete.
A one-stop point with vast history of the Greek nation all courtesy of one historical man Venizelos. State of the art AI technology which brings back to life the old times of Eleftherios Venizelos.

This beautifully restored house was well worth the visit. I enjoyed learning about the life of Greece’s most fascinating and influential leader. The house is slightly outside of the tourist center of Hania but just a 10 minute cab ride and couple of blocks from the archaeological museum. Cute outdoor cafe with jazz music playing in a peaceful garden.
Sea4Smiles — Google review
Such a fascinating museum. I knew very little about this former Greek Prime Minister before but I left with such a strong impression of how important a figure he was in shaping modern Greece. The museum is beautifully set out with lots of explanations in English and Greek throughout. There are many very interesting and relevant items from his life and the bullet ridden car stands out as an example of not only his incredible personal history, but as an extraordinary exhibit. The young woman on the front desk was extremely helpful and the cafe/bar area was a lovely quiet spot to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of our tour.

Great Museum about Eleftherios ,in his house.Walked from the old town around 30 minutes. The museum cost 4 euros each with a download to help navigate the exhibition. With a small cafe in the garden.
Tim E — Google review
Well-preserved house and well-structured exhibition with many interesting historical objects. Each one has a QR code allowing to access a description on the museum app, which is free to download. The information is available in Greek, English, German and French. I think it could be improved to contain more historical context for foreign visitors, nevertheless interesting. Plus there's also a cool space with educational games for kids in the attic.

This is definitely one of my favorite places in Chania. I am surprised how friendly the stuffs are and how well the house the preserved. All the items are well displayed, and with the app, you can scan any WR code and find out the background story behind the item. The garden is so lovely and well designed. First floor is my favorite because the book room and the room with fresco’s are absolutely amazing! The second floor is ok, but I do really like the piano and the balcony. The third floor is for presenting some of his personal belongings and some stuff made and named after him. Overall, I love this place. Highly recommend it!

The Lighthouse of Chania is a historic structure originally built by the Venetians in the 16th century and later modified by the Egyptians in 1839. It stands on a mole protruding into Chania harbor, offering breathtaking views of the old port and Chania's old town.
The lighthouse is so beautiful!! Built in the late 1800s, the site has been preserved and maintained and is now a great tourist attraction. Would 10/10 recommend visiting at dusk to see the sunset on the village! The lighting is incredible! Lots of little windows to look out and see the sunset as well!
Charis S — Google review
Nice enough for a spot of lunch or a glass of wine. Maybe a quick walk around the town. 15min on top of lunch is plenty if you eat in the harbor area. Pretty much all the pics were from the table or close to. Note the blue car with no plates....! We were very lucky a kind local explained the parking rules. In short you can't park anywhere convenient, round red/blue sign is resident only. No clue how you get your plates back. The map is athe only useful parking we found.
Nick C — Google review
Very nice lighthouse. There is a short walk to get to the lighthouse, you walk by the wall on the one side, and sea on the other. I went there when it was quite hot, maybe you should visit early in the day, or late in the day. Access to the lighthouse at the end is locked, but you have a nice view on the city of Chania and onto the sea.
Marko I — Google review
The highlight and the reason of every walk in the old town. Great in any moment of the day or night for that matter. Even better when going to the Sea and come back to the harbor.
Louanna N — Google review
Beautiful landmark that is totally worthy of a closer look after a short walk around the old port with its beautiful corners and shops that show up between its historical buildings. Also, the walk offers a great view of the sea and there benches for stops.
Anthi P — Google review
Very picturesque place to visit. The sun sets right by the lighthouse, when viewed from the boardwalk. We walked the levy all the way to the lighthouse, which was enjoyable, but also tricky once the sun went down and we walked back in the dark (pavement and bricks are uneven). We did not pay to go inside the lighthouse. We had a very nice outing just walking around the area.
MillionMile T — Google review
Pleasant walk to reach the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is closed for visiting, but while walking there you may walk the walls and have a nice view either towards the open sea or towards the Venetian port. Do recommend the stroll before sunset.
Dragoș V — Google review
A bit of a walk to the lighthouse, over some bumpy cobbles, but otherwise easy walk. Nice views. You can't get access to the lighthouse as it has a locked gate but can't walk up to it and stand on walls leading to it, with breathtaking views out to see and marina.

The Maritime Museum of Crete offers a fascinating journey through the maritime history of the region, spanning from the Bronze Age to modern times. The main collection, located at the entrance to Firka Fortress, showcases models of ancient ships, fortified towns and ports under Venetian rule, shipbuilding and repair structures, as well as modern Hellenic Navy vessels. A section is dedicated to the German invasion of Crete during WWII.
A fascinating museum packed with models, instruments and information about the boats that featured in the history of Chania and Crete overall. The star exhibit is the replica of a Minoan ship. Fittingly, the museum is located within an old building associated with shipbuilding. This is definitely not a tourist trap as some called it. This is an informative museum with a special story to tell that rewards anyone who can spend the time to go through the exhibits with care and attention.
Alan D — Google review
Local-feeling museum across two floors that was heavily indexed on World War II, and felt like a collection of models and objects vs. a narrative story or overview of maritime in Crete. We spent about 30-35 minutes wandering through, not doing in depth reading as the English signs were a little off given typos or unclear meaning given the vocabulary or phrasing used. It also felt extremely nationalistic Greek at times (to the point of almost being propaganda). There is also no AC and some rooms without fans, so wouldn’t go at the hotter times of day. However it’s like a good fit if you like ship models or World War II objects, as there were many ship models (centuries ago through World War II), and unique WWII objects to see like radars, binoculars, uniforms, photos, and a small model of a destroyer bridge. It’s located on the edge of the Venetian harbour and has good views from the upper floor. Other people were there but it didn’t feel overly crowded. Toilets available upstairs, which were stocked and mostly clean. No cafe or drinks onsite.
Becky T — Google review
Set at the entrance of the Venetian harbour, the building itself feels like a guardian of memory, a quiet reminder of how deeply the sea has shaped Crete’s history and spirit. As I moved through the rooms, I was struck by the sense of continuity from the ancient Minoan sailors to the Venetian fleets and the brave Cretan seafarers of World War II. The museum isn’t just a collection of artefacts; it’s a story of courage, resilience, and identity told through ships, maps, and photographs. The detailed ship models, handcrafted with care, seemed almost alive, as if ready to sail into history once more. What touched me most was the balance between pride and melancholy. The sea, which brought trade and connection, also carried conflict and loss — and the museum captures that duality beautifully.
Panayiotis M — Google review
This musuem hold an outstanding array of memorabilia, model ships, pictures and paintings, shells, nautical instruments etc. on two floors, so there are stairs to climb. It costs €4 for an adult ticket and there is no time limit to your visit. There are public toilets on the first floor. There is lots of information to read, and a video to watch (with English subtitles), however there are a few exhibits with information only in Greek. Overall a good couple of hours.
Julie P — Google review
Visited this museum with a couple hours spare during a few days in Chania and was pleasantly surprised. Cheap entry (less than £5 equivalent), and a myriad of exhibitions on Chania and Greece's naval history (militarily and otherwise). Some of the exhibition boards are woefully out of date and I'm pretty sure there's at least one board which is borderline offensive with regards to how it speaks about non-orthadox religions, in particular Islam. Broadly the layout of the museum on the ground floor is sensible, by era - though you do have to move non-intuitively to do it 'in order'. Upstairs is where the real showpiece of the museum is (for me) - the content, artefacts, ancdotes, and exhibits on the World Wars are fascinating and worth the admission price alone. I wouldn't visit again - but would reccomend it for anyone interested in finding out more about Greece's military history on water and its complicated relationship with naval tradition.
Harry B — Google review
An interesting and very patriotic maritime museum in the centre of Chania. Quite old fashioned, lacking much of a narrative and heavily reliant on ship models. It's good value at only 5 euros for adults. I found the English translations very funny though because of how terrible they are, many errors and it uses soaring patriotic language which made me laugh.
Henry ( — Google review
An impressive collection of models as well as other memorabilia making the visit certainly worth. One can walk through very fast (30 minutes) but equally can spend 2 hours if interested in details. Note worthy is the location as well as the views from the windows.

Well-designed and interesting museum, even though some of the texts are only in Greek. Small, but definitely worth a visit.

The Old Chania Market, also known as Agora or the Municipal Market of Chania, is a historic indoor market located in the heart of the city. It offers a wide variety of local products such as cheese, olive oil, wine, olives, sweets, honey and carved olive wood items. In addition to food items like vegetables, fish and meat, there are also stalls selling crafts and souvenirs.
Amazing place to visit year in year out! It’s beauty still feels catchy every time I visit it

Lovely place and lovely people! Shop owners were very friendly and welcoming, so much variety or authentic Greek items to buy and many many different types of souvenirs
Raj S — Google review
It was very busy due to the number of cruise ships in. Still a great place to visit. Just allow time for the crowds.
Richard R — Google review
Everyone was awaiting for the new year, 2020. Cobble stone roads to walk with shops and places to eat indoors or outdoors. The retail stores closed early. I was surprised I only saw one souvenir shop. You don’t and old strolling having a good time. A lot of excitement at midnight with the new year. Absolutely beautiful.
Angela ( — Google review
Wonderful place to spend the afternoon or the day, great coffee houses and taverns, the local shops are great to get a souvenir from, that said they are not cheap comparing to other locations around Crete. Touristic area but definitely worth a visit.
Ameen D — Google review
Before packing out from Chania visit this lovely market to take away some of the cities flavours and memories with you. Almost all shops are selling same stuff but it good to look around. You can buy olives, olive oil, spices, cheeses and some mountain teas from here. Options are available for Souvenirs as you can see many beautifully crafted wooden items and some well painted pottery. Keep an eye on your weight limit before going crazy.
Theocharis S — Google review
Lovely market it's got lots of the same shops you would find else where in chania, but there is little food places that look nice and and some traditional butchers and fish mongers. The prices are better than the other tourist places and there is a nice educational display in the centre of the market. There is also the old walls of the original market just out side interesting if you like to see the history of places All in all a good little wander for a hour.
Alex L — Google review
Interesting, but not too much to see, since I was there in January and it seemed the market had low-season too. What I liked were the traditional cheese and olive stalls and some eataries.

Step into the ancient world of the Minoans with the Minoan's World 9D Experience, a unique blend of cutting-edge technology and Europe's oldest civilization. The experience includes a 3D museum featuring lifelike silicon statues and captivating art that can be brought to life through your phone's camera. Visitors can take part in fun photo opportunities, posing with figures like the Minotaur and participating in bull leaping.
First time vacationing in Chania, Crete, a friend told me to come here to Minoan's world! He was right, it is a perfect activity with a very beautiful museum that deals with the Minoan civilization! I highly recommend it, it is one of the best activities in Chania! Many thanks to the owners!
Grigoris S — Google review
The cinema wasn't crowded or busy at all, only 4 people all together ( us 2 people and another couple). It was overall a fun experience. Museum bit is very little. Only a few statues and some painting. Staff were friendly and helpful. The show was really short and focused on mythology instead of actual history. Which was a bit disappointing for me, as I booked this experience to learn about Crete and the history of its people, instead I learnt about Zeus and how he turned into a bull etc. It should be 20 minutes longer and include an actual history bit. Another shortfall of the show was the quality of the animation, it looked like an older video game. It was a fun roller coaster simulation at the end of it, which was fun. Overall we left with a smile on our faces. I would recommend it to anyone, but don't expect too much and you won't get disappointed.
Gergely H — Google review
We visited this place as a family of 4 with young kids. One of our kids was feeling apprehensive of the 9D cinema (I think we traumatised him young with the hyperspace mountain at Disneyland 😂) and the staff was extremely kind and accommodating to him. They were all polite and warm, made us feel like home. The experience itself was a lot of fun, a good mix of history, mythology and just a bit of pure fun. A really interesting and unique experience in Chania!

I was with my family in Chania and I chose this activity! I made a very good choice because the museum and the film of the Minoan civilization were what I wanted for my children to see about the history of the Domain and the Minoans! The staff was very helpful, well done to the owners!
Dimitrios G — Google review
Very interesting experience. Friendly and helpful staff who asked if I wanted her to take my picture for me as I went alone. The movies is 30 minutes to see, so all in all you would only need about 40-50 minutes here to experience the movies and read all the information. 10/10

Loved it! Staff is so enthusiastic and helpful getting the best photos taken in the museum and the cinema is also so underrated. Very enjoyable experience, would do it again straight away <3

The reception area was very well done! Bringing the Minoan world to such a great, fresh visual was really eye-opening. The shows were fun and educational and my child loved them. It's probably time to upgrade the animation though.

Kucuk Hasan Mosque, also known as Yali Tzami, is a significant Ottoman-era domed mosque situated in the Old Venetian Port of Chania. The city has a rich history dating back to the Minoan era and developed during the Byzantine and Venetian periods. The mosque stands out as the only one of its kind in Chania and is often referred to as 'mosque of the sea' due to its proximity to the water.
We went for an art show. It was amazing! The space was clean and light. There was a lively feel to it. Not at all what I expected in such an old and historic building. I was very impressed with the restoration and upkeep of this place. The location could hardly be more beautiful. Highly recommend if they have an art or craft show that you stop by and take a look!
T. C — Google review
While I perfectly understand why the Greeks and other Balkan countries such as the Serbs wished to decolonise themselves from the architecture of their Ottoman oppressors, this building with its almost spherical dome is a handy landmark while walking along or looking towards the seafront. I can't comment on the exhibitions or anything, as it appears to only be open at the weekend and the weekend I was there, everything was shut for Easter.
Jake — Google review
Repurposed mosque that is now an art gallery. Great artists who live and work in Chania have made this place an ideal exhibition spot for their works. Check out the paintings 🖼 of longtime resident artists like John Tierney; impressive abstract work with serene nature themes
Jonathon P — Google review
A nice remembrance of 300 years Ottoman rule in Crete. There are few other Ottoman period buildings. Inside mosque is now a exhibition art display. You can still admire the mehrab area with Quranic inscriptions. Noted the recent comment mentioning Ottomans as "oppressor's". its a game of power. What were Portuguese were doing in India Goa, Spainders in South America, colonized half of the world. Many places are so beautiful that classed as UNESCO sites. Why not go ahead and decolonize Cordoba mosque and remove this masterpiece architectural site. Anyway, who cares. This old once a Mosque is standing their in Chania for world to remember this period and admire the Ottoman architectural wonders.
Waqas — Google review

As you stroll down Halidon Street towards the picturesque old harbor of Chania, you'll encounter the Metropolitan Cathedral of Chania, also known as Trimártiri. The Church of Agios Nikolaos in Chania is a fascinating blend of history and architecture. Originally built as a Catholic church in the 14th century, it was later transformed into an army barracks and then a mosque during Ottoman rule. Today, it stands as an Orthodox church, showcasing the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Crete over the centuries. The building complex includes a basilica with a tall bell tower and a two-floor arcade, reflecting its rich history.
Beautiful square, a lots of greek food options coffee etc. amazing minerat. only place where you see a Bell tower and Minerat standing together. Amazing Ottoman structure, well preserved. Thanks to Chania local authority that despite locals hate towards Ottomans and Muslims you still protecting these monuments and upholding your history.

Beautiful church that’s free to enter, and wander through in a few minutes. There are no signs, but it does have some icons and art to look at. Note: There were no fans or air conditioning on when we went so it was very hot inside.
Becky T — Google review
What a disappointment. This church was mentioned in the guide book and sounded interesting, having been a mosque until around 1913. Although when we arrived at the church it was closed. There are no opening times listed outside, or ironically in the guidebook.

Beautiful small church, located in a cute little town not far off the highway.
Lorie C — Google review
Extremely rude staff or groundskeeper that degrades tourists. Kindness and gentleness are fruits of the Spirit, according to your own tenants. Maybe try it sometime? Shame on you and your "church" as representatives of Jesus treating people with disdain. Do better, as the world will know you by your love. John 13:34–35 - "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Hope this helps you improve.
Sydni J — Google review
A very nice place, but the man outside the church, who probably takes care of it, is extremely rude and disrespectful — completely against the values of the church and the place he represents at that moment. My girlfriend and I have a small dog (a dachshund) and we were visiting the site. I was standing with the dog at the entrance of the church when the man stopped me in a very impolite way. I immediately apologized and did not enter at all, yet he kept shouting at me aggressively. Just imagine someone behaving like that at the entrance of a church.

A very big St.Nikolaos church. Built as an orthodox Christian church and taken by the Muslims later on. The minaret is still there to remind the locals what happened. Next to the small square that has a huge platanus tree. A sign there says that on that tree the Turks hanged the bishop and a priest in 1821 during the revolution of Greece.

The site was chosen by Eleftherios Venizelos himself before his body was brought here from Paris. Despite being outside the city, the graves are an integral part of Chanioti's identity.
The best place for a cafe in Chania ! The view is magnificent, there are enough free parking spots and the view is amazing ! There are 2 cafes nearby where you can relax anytime during the day.
Pantelis Z — Google review
Great place to visit for photo opportunities and a meal. You can get here by bus, or you can drive - though I believe parking is quite limited. I chose to walk from Chania, which took me around 1hr 15mins. It probably wasn’t the wisest idea I’ve ever had as it was 30 degrees and the majority of it is uphill, but I got there in the end! I was rewarded with fab views of the coastline, a beautiful Venetian chapel, and an abundance of cats. There are public toilets adjacent to the chapel, and although they are clean there is no toilet paper or soap. Luckily I always carry tissue and hand sanitiser. There are a couple of cafes next to the park. Thankfully the walk back down was much more enjoyable!

Worth visiting it because of its historical importance, peaceful area full of green (chilly during summer), panoramic view of the city and its bay. The Byzantine/Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania, housed in the 15th-century San Salvatore church, offers an intimate look at the region's history through a diverse array of artifacts. From mosaics and wall paintings to statues, coins, and religious items, the museum provides insight into the Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and Venetian eras. Visitors can explore relics from early Christian churches and gain understanding of Cretan civilization after Roman colonization.
Small but very interesting to explore and learn about the intricacies of the Cretan history of the museum. The opportunity to see monuments from the Byzantine era, the Venetian state and later is very appealing to the imagination.

The Municipal Art Gallery of Chania is a neoclassical gallery that showcases a wide range of Greek art, spanning from 18th-century paintings to contemporary sculptures. It serves as a hub for cultural activities, hosting exhibitions, educational programs, and other events throughout the year. The ground floor features Minoan findings from Nopigia excavations and presents the historical development of major cities in western Crete.
The Municipal Art Gallery of Chania is a cultural gem, offering a deep dive into Greek art from the 18th century to today. Among its standout exhibits are works by Konstantinos Volanakis, Greece’s master of seascapes, whose paintings capture the beauty and drama of the sea with stunning realism. The gallery’s elegant space and thoughtful curation make it a must-visit for art lovers.

I walked through this park today whilst in Chania and came across the most amazing tree! I've seen loads of huge plane trees here on Crete, I've seen some ancient olive trees as well, but this tree (not sure what it is, but I must find out!) is one of the most beautiful and interesting trees I've seen here. I will definitely be going back soon to see it again :) . Almirida beach, located just 1 km from Kalives towards Chania, offers a serene and less crowded environment compared to other nearby beaches. The sandy shore gently slopes into the sea, making it ideal for various activities such as beach rackets and leisurely swims. With a selection of restaurants along the boulevard, visitors can enjoy dining with a view of the beautiful harbor. Additionally, the beach provides sunbeds and parasols for rent with convenient service directly on the sand.
Great beach, part of it is labeled as blue flag beach(the part of it towards the little Harbour). The water is cristal clear and shallow making it ideal for families and children. The beach sand is also very fine grained, ideal for castles. On the beach one can find a lot of sunbeds, with prices at around 5-6€/sunbed. There are also a lot of free sport, under the trees, which also provide a lot of shade until around 14 o'clock. There are also a couple of showers and a free public toilet. Wheelchiar accessible parking and entrance are also available. The view is spectacular.

The worst beach I have seen in Crete so far. This is a wide and long beach located in a bay. It is slightly sheltered from the elements and offers an easy way of entering the sea (sand, no rocks, no sea urchins, less waves). The sea here is not deep at all, you can swim about 50-80 metres out and still be able to touch the ground. There is a lifeguard here daily during the summer - be careful with the sea current (if you’re swimming further towards the little islet).

This beach it is amazing. We’ve been moving around the island and changing hotels, and we ended here as we got a hotel we liked. What a Lovely surprise. The beach is all sand. There are many restaurants with beach service. The chairs at the beach are 5eur. So 2 chairs +umbrella it costs EUR10. The water is warm and super calm, it feels Like a big lagoon. The village has many restaurants and it is really cozy. Perfect place.

Splantzia Square, also known as 1821 Square, is a captivating historical gem nestled in the southeastern part of Chania's old city. This vibrant square was once the heart of the largest Muslim district during Ottoman rule and features the stunning Church of St. Nicolas, which has an intriguing past. Originally built as a Venetian Catholic church in 1861, it underwent transformations into a mosque before returning to its Christian roots in the 20th century.
Great walk around this historic center. Very safe, enjoyable and relaxing. Lots of good restaurants and shops if you venture through the alleys.
Danh D — Google review
Set in the Turkish quarter of Chania this square bustles with scores of tables of the meze (small plates) restaurants that fill the square. The church at the end of the square was converted to a mosque during Ottoman occupation and them converted back to a church. The minnaret still remains. On a walking tour of Chania this is a place to experience, and if you are seeking a vibrant dining experience this place bustles with life during high season.
Simon M — Google review
A usually crowded during the night Splantzia Square, mostly with young visitors 20-30 years old.

The whole scene in Old Town is awesome. History that goes back several thousand years. If you're hungry there are plenty spots to eat.
Marcus — Google review
Small square in the city with good choice of mid budget restaurants and excellent coffee shops around. The Turkish Fountain is permanently closed.
J M — Google review
A must-visit landmark of Chania. A crossroad of civilizations. Many small restaurants preferred by the locals for tasty cretan mezedes. Walk within the maze like streets of the area and get lost in a time travel.

Amusement park
Katerina Amusement Park is a great choice for spending quality time with kids or friends. It offers classic amusement park rides at reasonable prices and ensures the safety of its games. The park, located in a convenient area, provides an opportunity for children to have fun. Although it may be small compared to larger amusement parks, it still manages to entertain young kids and create a fantastic experience for all visitors.
Fun for all, had a fantastic time, balarina was the fav followed by the dodgem cars and the caterpillar. Everyone came away with a 🐻 bear, well happy 😊
Mark T — Google review
Good place, but pretty small. Enough to entertain small kids for one evening. Older kids who's seen proper amusement parks will be disappointed. Loved it anyway!

Loud music played, disturbing neighbourhood hotels. Where guests want to rest. My first night in a close by hotel, and disturbed by loud music from 7 pm onwards. It was lower after 10 pm. There is no fake in this review, and rudeness in your respond only proves your lack of care. And if there is a beach party around, I have not seen yet, for sure that is also not appropriate after certain time.

The tour is highly recommended for its professionalism and local knowledge, allowing guests to avoid crowded areas. The crew ensures a comfortable and respectful environment, catering to individual needs such as taking care of young children. Guests praise the beautiful spots for snorkeling, delicious lunch, and attentive service provided by the crew members.
We had an absolutely splendid boat tour with Chania Boat Tours in September! Captain Antoni and assistant Manoli were exceptional hosts, making our trip far exceed our expectations. Their professionalism, friendliness, and knowledge of the area made the experience unforgettable. The boat was well-maintained, and the itinerary was perfect, offering stunning views and plenty of opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. We had an absolute blast and can't recommend Chania Boat Tours enough. Thank you, Antoni and Manoli, for an amazing day on the water!

We had an amazing time with this boat company! Everything was well organized, and the experience exceeded our expectations. The boat was clean, comfortable, and perfect for a relaxing day out on the water. A special shoutout to our captain—he was incredibly friendly, professional, and made us feel safe and welcome throughout the trip. We truly appreciated his hospitality and knowledge. We’re already looking forward to coming back and will definitely be choosing this company again!
Lilla E — Google review
The boat was clean and spacious, the crew incredibly friendly, and the views… absolutely magical. We sailed along two islands, sipped local wine and ate traditional salad. Also we watched the sun dip into the sea behind the mountains of Crete. A perfect mix of relaxation, beauty, and Cretan hospitality. Highly recommended!
George F — Google review
If you’re looking for a game changing boating experience, this is it. It’s absolutely first class all the way. From the greeting as your party arrives, the quality of the boats, the enthusiasm and experience of the captain, to the beautiful waters, the provided lunch, drinks, casual conversation, history of the island, and attention to detail. We had a midsize party with young children, adults, couples, singles, and everyone left wanting to book another trip for the very next day. If you go to Crete, this trip is an absolute must do. The snorkeling, the swim to Balos, and the attentiveness to making sure everything felt in control, safe and fun is unmatched than any boating experience any us of have ever had. Our next visit to Crete will definitely include a trip around the island with Seaz the day. Thank you to the captain and the administrators who set everything up for us and gave us an incredible experience.

Booking until the day of cruise : very communicative and letting us know how the day will look like - weather condition. So professional!!! During the trip: very professional. We've been on boats in Spain, Portugal. Ibiza... we were impressed with their professionalism. Giving us room for privacy. Also, as everyone knows - locals know the best.. they recommended when and which stop to go- we were able to avoid bug boats coming in. We had our 3 year old son with us on the boat and they made sure he is taken care of... they also found a good place to have lunch - steady water. End of trip- just pleasant and nice... we would be on this boat, Apollo, again when we are back in Crete. We loved both gentlemen that were handling the boat and welcoming us. Very professional...

Highly recommend Chania Boat Tours, Manus and Antonio (sorry if I've misspelled your names) were great. Showed us some beautiful spots for snorkeling, made a nice lunch and were very respectful of our space so it felt like we had the boat to ourselves. I also lost a snorkel in the sea which was retrieved by Manus, so thanks for that! Beautiful boat too!! 😎

What an amazing experience! We did the 4-hour Kalathas Beach Caves & Macherida Beach package and we wish we selected a 6 or 8 hour option because we had such a great time. Captain Antonis and Adam were very professional and timely. The food on board was excellent with homemade olive oil from Antonis’s trees. The boat was clean and spacious and although we enjoyed the crews company, they also gave us a lot of privacy by retreating to the cabins below. I had done quite a bit of research before selecting Chania Boat Tours and I’d highly recommend them to anyone looking for a private boat experience. Thanks again Antonis, Adam and the Chania Boat Tour team!

Kiani Akti beach, located just a kilometer from Kalives towards Chania, is a hidden gem that offers a serene escape for those seeking tranquility. With its soft sandy shores and gentle waves, this beach is perfect for sunbathing or enjoying leisurely walks under the warm sun. The presence of only one café ensures that it remains less crowded, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the stunning views of Chania and the occasional sighting of large ships passing by.
Very nice sand beach! It often has waves. There is a river with cold water reaching the sea and a wooden bridge to cross it if you don't want to get your feet yet

At first, I was apprehensive of this lagoon but once I stumbled upon this diamond amongst dirt I was absolutely amazed beyond belief. I have never been more satisfied since it was announced the mcrib was making its return. What a picturesque place. It is ideal for a cheeky morning walk sun shining above your head and shoals of fish swimming below your feet. Tip: don't bring your ungrateful children as they certainly cannot comprehend the true beauty of mother earth which lies before their eyes
David W — Google review
A nice, lightly organized beach with a few sunbeds and plenty of room for others who don’t want to rent. The sunbeds had no charge but required a minimum purchase of 4 euros per person from the cafe. Nice water, and the river nearby is very cold and adds a nice refreshing element.
Meredith M — Google review
Beach is wonderful. Nice cool clear water plenty of room. Watch out when trying to drive to the beach there is only one very narrow road and alot of angry people trying to get by. But if you aren't scared to park a little way down and walk it's an excellent choice

Kiani Akti Beach is truly a hidden gem! This beautiful sandy beach offers free sunbeds and umbrellas with any drink purchase, making it an excellent choice for a relaxing day by the water. If its windy you have waves if not watter is calm and crystal clear! The beach bar serves delicious snacks and drinks at very affordable prices. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality and value. I highly recommend Kiani Akti Beach over any other beach in Chania, Crete, and the surrounding areas. It’s a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the sun!

Allen A — Google review
(Translated by Google) First of all, it's a constantly windy area. However, being a beach used mostly by locals, it was wonderfully tranquil. The river just ahead offers a wonderful experience. When you're feeling overwhelmed by the heat of the sun and sand, a dip in the icy river water is wonderfully refreshing. The prices at the beach were also quite reasonable. I think it's a great location for anyone looking for a laid-back experience.

Diktamos Gorge, located between Katochori and Faragi villages near Stylos in Apokoronas, offers a beautiful and lush natural setting with plenty of plain trees. This 7.5km route involves rough terrain hiking and rock climbing, requiring good physical fitness, agility, lower body strength, and mental determination. Sturdy footwear is essential along with ample water supply. The late summer may bring loud cicadas so ear plugs are recommended for sensitive ears.
Beautiful gorge, went walking here and it was worth it. One thing: if you’re a slow walker or have people with you that need a lot of rest or walk slow take more time. In the reviews most people say it takes around 2 to 3 hours but we had some people with us that didn’t have a high pace and it took around 4,5 hours. But still worth it. (Take lots of water with you, when you think: this is enough. Take another bottle)
Finn T — Google review
This is one of our favorite gorges since it’s a relaxing and beautiful walk where you can explore terrain and enjoy the views. It took us about two hours to walk to the end and another two to walk back to the car. The path is easy to follow, no marking we’re necessary to find our way.
Nora F — Google review
june 2025: the route is very well marked (at least for Stylos to Katochori direction). If you follow the red/white markings (path of least resistance) you don't really need to use your hands (except for 2 small ladders), and it's definitely not a "rock climbing" route like some reviewers mention. Recommended for fit adults only, as it follows a dry bouldery river bed where progress is slow (the terrain is rocky and not a beaten footpath). Lots of flowers and goats. Being oriented W-E it receives less shade than other N-S canyons like Imbros, so avoid the midday heat in summer. Allow 3 hours for the way out and about the same for the way back (mostly unpaved roads). Do not go if you can't use a map to figure out the return route.
Alex S — Google review
Great gorge descent with lots of interesting pitches, scenery, flora and fauna but no route-finding problems due to the generally excellent waymarking. Suitable for anyone accustomed to UK Grade 1 rock scrambling. WORD OF WARNING: the second ladder near the bottom is not there anymore (September 2024) - it's perfectly feasible to manoeuvre down but might be tricky to ascend given the smooth rock and lack of hand holds. Well worth the effort to explore as an alternative to the more popular gorges. Best to get taxis sorted start and finish although there's a taxi number at the bottom exit if you don't fancy the undulating 30 minute walk to Stylos - most of the tavernas only had a few locals in at 18h30 when we went.
Duncan A — Google review
River bed was dry but you could see the the power of water and result of thousand of years of water washing out stones. Path we'll marked. From easy to hard rock climbing. We entered not expecting this to be that long (2-3h one way). Beautiful nature, rocks, goats
Arnis M — Google review
Nice Gorge with lots of shade. If you walk this gorge take enough water with you. Some parts can be a bit difecult. Look for the red arrows/signs because Some parts its better to follow them for the easy way.
Cees — Google review
Very good and relaxing gorge, not the easy side. It is around 8km in length whicj can be easily completed for around 2-3 hours depending on your pace. It starts from the village of Katochori, and there are plenty of parking spots to park your vehicles at the entrance. Sadly you will need to have set up a vehicle at the end aswell since there is no other way of transportation. The fastest route to drive from the bottom to the top of the gorge is around 15-20km but the road is not in very good condition. The gorge itself is nice, you walk inaide of a small riverbed and in the beginning there is shallow water aswell. The path is not very clear at some points, and has some hard spots especially in the Spring when the snow of the mountains melts which lead to the gorge being filled with water, not to a point that it is not doable but you might get wet. Still tho it is extremely beautiful and pleasant path to walk even by older people, definitely recommend it.
CRETA T — Google review
Parked at the bottom of the gorge by a sign to the "Oak Forest". Apparently the top is better marked. Look for a signpost with a blue 2 that marks the entry at this end. Took longer than expected and we only got halfway due to the amount of boulder climbing required. This took us about 4 hours at a leisurely pace. Moderate physical fitness required. Follow the red arrows for easier paths.
