Ilha Grande is a lush and mostly undeveloped island that serves as a state park, offering visitors beautiful beaches, rainforest hiking trails, and charming coastal villages. The island boasts numerous idyllic spots such as the dazzling Blue Lagoon and Lopez Mendes, known as one of Brazil's most stunning beaches. With over a dozen signposted trails, ranging from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes, visitors can explore the island's natural beauty.
Amazing 🤩 go with “rio Havana” they are the best 👌

Breathtaking island vibes! Ilha Grande stole my heart with its stunning beaches, lush forests, and crystal-clear waters. Hiking, relaxation, and vibrant nightlife - this island's got it all. Don't miss the scenic trails, hidden coves. A must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers!
Ej M — Google review
Amazing place, quite rustic and rugged, every beach different. If you are able, get a private boat and beach hop. Better yet, become really wealthy and own a yacht. Loved this island and only explored a fraction

Real island vibes, friendly atmosphere, plenty to see and do.

Ilha Grande was absolutely incredible! I had an amazing time ,it’s truly home to the most beautiful beach I’ve ever visited in my life. The food was delicious, and the people were so warm and friendly. Honestly, Brazilians in general are some of the kindest people I’ve met. This place is a paradise , unforgettable experience!

Ilha Grande is beautiful, however, your ability to explore it independently is incredibly limited. If you want to hike, the paths aren't well established so you need to book a guide which is incredibly expensive and the guides aren't great at responding to WhatsApp or website (I tried several). You must book in advance otherwise you'll end up doing nothing. If you want to see a lagoon on your own, it's only possible if you book a water taxi. The only way to do that is WhatsApp or to book onto a tour with other people. You can't do anything independently and must sign up to a pre-planned tour. The accommodation on the island is poor, everywhere. The toilet systems aren't good which means you can't even flush your own toilet paper. The restaurants increase prices dramatically for tourist season. Despite the natural beauty of this magnificent island, you can't travel independently, you pay very high prices to do anything and must go on a tour - i wish we had stayed in Rio.
Natasha — Google review
Stunning island with loads of different hikes across the island. You are directly hiking through the jungle to end up at beautiful beaches. It’s definitely worth a visit. Downside - transportation from one side to another with luggage is super complicated. As you have to 2 boats or you have to pay one super expensive taxi boat.
Florian — Google review
We didn’t love Ilha Grande. Befote coming, we were mesmerized by pictures and the fact that all Brazil guides say it’s a must convinced us. We felt that the island is like the Brazilian Benidorm: mass tourism, noisy, dirty and expensive for what it is. Perhaps it is because we had little time so we stayed in Aabrao and we came slightly off season, but beaches are absolutely packed with people, full of rubbish…. There is no sense of culture or calm here unfortunately…. I would not come back.

Mountain peak
Pico do Papagaio is a challenging yet rewarding 11km hike on Ilha Grande, leading you up almost 1000m in altitude. Starting around 2 am is recommended to witness the breathtaking views from the second highest peak on the island. The ascent takes about three hours through thick forest, offering sensational panoramic views of the entire island. While difficult and exhausting, reaching the top is definitely worth it.
Great hike! Very much worth it. Took us about 3 hours to get up starting at the town by average pace.
Ni N — Google review
I ran the trail alone, set off at 0420. Took 1.25 to the top and 1.00 back down. Hard going when you leave the track but the trail is pretty easy to follow. Take a good flashlight and plenty of water, don't grab the trees due to snakes and spiders. The view is well worth the effort. Saw howler monkeys, spiders, birds and what I think were a pair of capybaras.

Do not under erstimate this hike. But 10/10 definitely worth it. I will be back.

(Translated by Google) The trail is challenging. There are markings and no major hazards, but it's almost a three-hour climb, which can be quite tiring for some. It's beautiful up there, but there's little room to stay... and there are precipices that can be dangerous if you're careless. (Original) Trilha puxada. (Translated by Google) Great view – but not to be underestimated! The hike is absolutely worth it: A fantastic view awaits you at the top. The route is quite challenging, though – around 1,000 meters of elevation gain, and the round trip took me about 4 hours. I'm currently quite fit, so I would recommend allowing more time – and definitely bringing more than 1 liter of water. The trail is poorly signposted; a GPS or an offline map is helpful. I found it pleasant to hike alone because I could set my own pace. If you're unsure, you can also join a guided tour – these usually start at night, so you'll be at the top for sunrise. However, you'll need to budget more time (and money) for this.

(Translated by Google) During the day and in good weather, the hike is great, and the summit is magnificent. The view is incredible! We saw several animals, including howler monkeys. Round trip completed in 8 hours, with a 45-minute break at the summit (departure at 8 a.m. and return at 4 p.m.). First thing to know: a guide is required for this hike between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. since 2023. During the day, nothing is required. The hike is difficult, and longer than advertised (it's between 10 and 12 km round trip). It's steep from the beginning, but there are small plateaus from time to time. Hiking poles are a huge help. You need 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person. There are markers all along the trail. Not many, but all the way to the end. The trail is well-marked by people passing by, and can be followed without difficulty during the day. The last kilometer is a little trickier to navigate, especially on the descent. Warning: at the end of the hike, the real trail goes left at a marker engraved with an arrow and goes around the peak to climb to the summit from behind. You reach the summit without too much difficulty, in the middle of the forest. You have to use your hands a little, but it's not too difficult. Anyone who approaches from the front of the peak, at a large rocky outcrop, has taken the wrong path. It's much more difficult and dangerous. I recommend using a map that works offline. The AllTrails map is good and indicates with a yellow marker when to turn left.

This place is really not safe to snorkle. Lots of boats coming from everywhere and even jet skis with high speed. Avoid!

Our boat stopped here for us to have a swim or snorkel. What a beautiful spot, there was lots of marine life here, fishes were big and colourful. One of the tourist spotted a turtle bit unfortunately I didn't get to see one!

Totally an awesome experience of nature at its finest. Swimming, snorkeling, relaxing. I would recommend not going on holiday weekends or during peak seasons though, unless you find a hidden unpopular beach or cove. It gets pretty crowded with boat traffic and people. If you are into the crowds etc go for it! 😁
Winston L — Google review
Another stop on our boat tour. Everyone had pool noodles to enjoy the warm clear water and all the fishies swimming close by. You don't actually go on the island.

Get there early and you'll have a wonderful experience snorkeling with all the sea life. Gets too crowded to enjoy afterwards.

Abraão is the main village on Ilha Grande, offering the most tourist infrastructure and accessibility from the mainland. While it's a popular choice for accommodation, there are other options like Praia de Aracatiba, located on the opposite side of the island. This area provides a more secluded and nature-surrounded experience with simpler inns and beach bars.

Nestled in the heart of Ilha Grande, the Instituto Penal Cândido Mendes stands as a haunting reminder of the island's turbulent past. Once a high-security prison for Brazil's most dangerous criminals, it housed notorious figures and became infamous for dramatic escape stories, including that of Escadinha, a drug lord who made headlines with his helicopter getaway. The prison operated until 1994 when it was finally closed down, leaving behind an eerie yet fascinating relic amidst the island’s lush landscapes.

Outdoor Activities
Praia de Dois Rios is a secluded beach on Ilha Grande, accessible by a walking path or boat. The walk takes about 2-3 hours from Abraao and offers stunning landscapes along the way. This medium-level trek is not difficult but quite long, making it worth the effort for those seeking a less crowded beach experience. The beach is surrounded by rivers where visitors can swim and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
One of the top Beaches on The island. The way to there it’s gonna take you around 2hs from Abrão. Medium level: not hard but long. But the effort worth it. Beach with just a few visitors. Two rivers on the side where you can swim, make it especial and different than others beaches. Landscape is stunning. Don’t miss the visit to the old prission to learn about history of Ilha Grande. Just one restaurant on the village, so bring your owner food and water. You can find a taxi boat to come back to abrão for 150reals. 😱 ✅ Local tip: once you coming back to Abrão 45min to arrive to Abrão you have a view point of Abrão Village, is at the “death Curve” look at the right you gonna find a path downside in to the forest. It gonna take you to “Rua das Flores” at the middle of the town, and save you like 30min walking. Don’t take it if is rain because could be moody and slippery. Enjoy it!
Damian A — Google review
Beautiful beach. About 2 hours walk from the town. Add some time so you can see the natural river pool nearby the road. It was easier to see the sign on the way home
Linn S — Google review
The beach was very nice but I put 1 star for the taxi boat. The 150 (about 25 eur) is illegal as we found out later that the 1 day tours cost the same. Anyway the driver of the boat is crazy. We were in this small boat with no life jackets. There were some waves and the driver never slowed down, he kept going with the boat bumping very strongly. Some of us screamed again and again but the driver didnt care. He just kept speeding despite the strong jumps. Do yourself a favur, dont take this taxi boat.
Cristina R — Google review
I can't get enough of this place. It is a heaven where some people lived their hell, but today's day its a full of history, stories, nature and local culture. It takes a short 6-7k hike to get here from Vila do Abraão and around 2 hours. It worth all efforts.
Bruno F — Google review
This place rocks, and even more so because the only way is by boat or a long hike! Several hours of walking up and over the hills of Ilha Grande you arrive in two Rivers! A prison where the CV Red Command was created (one of Brazil's most violent gangs second to PCC) You can even visit, take a look inside! There are a few restaurants but watch out because it may take a really long time to get your food, you may end up walking home in the dark (not recommended) head back with at least two hours of sun light! There are multiple abandoned houses and mansions but if you explore you need to be very respectful and careful as the houses are very dilapidated. The beach is a long beautiful and very clean Beach. Since it's on the Oceanside there is less trash and the beach receives less visitors! Go for a swim in the ocean and then take a dip the river, it's so refreshing. It kind of reminds me of jumping in the pool after being in the ocean. TIP/HINT - there are multiple little trails and entrances along the road to Two Rivers. Many of them if you walk for five minutes you'll come across multiple waterfalls, springs and pools. Follow my Instagram, I give tips and travel info! @Experience.Rio

I much preferred Dois Rios than Lopes Mendes beach 🏖! It's not full of tourist and you can even bike 🚲 there! It takes about 45 min to go by bike but beware, do not consider renting a bike (R$40/day) to go there if 1) you're not athletic / in shape. 2) you don't like climbing up hill (it's pretty much 35min up hill and 10min down hill). 3) you don't know how to ride a MTB on a rocky, steepy and slippery path. Nonetheless, if you take a bike 🚲, not only you'll have fun going down but you will also save 2hrs and you will enjoy the beauty of Dois Rios alone in the afternoon when hikers leave the beach to go back to Abraão. Do not miss this beach!
Alexandre E — Google review
Superb beach at this paradise known as Ilha Grande. To get to this spot at the island, it's possible to take the walking path or by boat. The walking path is always flat and straightforward, but, despite being very easy, it can take up to 3 hours from Abraão. This is what most people do actually. There is nowhere to eat or to buy water, nor shade from the sun. You are allowed to take anything you wish, but it is prohibited to camp or light fires (not possible to bbq). On the way to the beach of Dois Rios, there is a small village in which some inhabitants of this part of the island live, but none of the houses are open for rentals, nor night stays. So, if planning to stay longer at the beach, beware of the dangers and risks in going down that lane during the night, which will end up in having to walk in total darkness back to Abraão (torches and cell phone lights may be of use), not to mention tiredness and any sort of sickness that may occur. The local villagers are not allowed to help, nor provide any kind of infrastructure to aid in case need arises. I'd say thus enjoy the daylight but be gone before the sunset or within a 3 hour timeframe that's safe to walk back the trail towards the main district in the island (some people may be lucky to find lodgings at the beach of Lopes Mendes or at the Pouso beach, but in the last minute it might be a hard task, as there might not be an actual walking trail to get there - probably only by boat or going around Abraão). I would not rely on cell phones reception either, it's rather rough to find good connection.
Mariana M — Google review
This is an amazing beach, an easy day's walk from Abraão via the road. Very few visitors, and the water and nearby rivers are amazing for swimming. At the west end of the beach, by the entrance of the road, there is a comida caseira that offers delicious meals, the fish caught by the man who lives there, Jetulio. Do yourself a favor and eat there! Best feijao on the whole island, with the sound of the ocean nearby

O Pescador is a cozy inn with casual rooms, many of which offer ocean views. The hotel provides spacious and nicely furnished rooms equipped with amenities like air conditioning, large beds, and fridges. Although there's no safe in the room, the island is generally considered safe. The on-site seafood restaurant serves delicious meals with the right portion sizes. Guests can enjoy a wonderful breakfast and friendly staff willing to help book tours at fair prices.

Lovely place to stay! The owner knows English and is very helpful in finding the best trips in the island for you. If you need any other help the owner of the staff will help you with all their heart. The room was spacious, clean and had clear air! The bed was good and the breakfast had anything you need. As for the restaurant. Good pizza and amazing caçhacas! The drinks are well balanced and tasty! I would recommend everyone to go here if it’s available.

Wonderful place to stay for a couple of nights! Location was great close to the pier), rooms were small but clean and breakfast was amazing. Last but not least, the staff is friendly and willing to help to book a tour for a fair price.

The hotel rooms are spacious and furnished very nice, there is an AC, large bed, a couche and an armchair, a fridge. Would be nice to have a safe but I think the island is generally safe. The rooms were clean and the housekeeping was good. We didn't have shampoo in the room, and didn't understand if the hotel normally provides it, but when we asked for it a full bathroom kit was provided. The restaurant is really good, the food is tasty and served well in the plate. The portions were the right size. Probably this is the best restaurant on the island in terms of quality. We tried grilled mixed seafood, grilled shrimp plate, octopus carpaccio (yum!) - all was very fresh. Also tried file mignon with green pepper sauce - not bad but meat is definitely inferior to fish on the island. Sometimes it may take them long to serve, once it took them almost an hour to serve the main dish, but it seems common on the island, so we had all our dinners here. The restaurant near this one took 2 hours to serve us lunch and the quality wasn't even good. Overall I highly recommend both the hotel and the restaurant.

I really enjoyed the pizza. All options are authentic. We enjoyed the Pizza and the dough was perfect as well as all the selected ingredients. We also stayed for a couple of nights in the hotel and enjoyed it throughout. Grazie!

Comfortable rooms, had a lovely view. Also ate dinner and had lovely pizzas. All prices are a little high but all in all I’m very happy.
Freddie G — Google review
The pizza is made close to napolitano style and on that front I would.be happy. Unfortunately the tuna pizza had almost no tuna, it was basically a cheese pizza. For an expensive pizza like this they shouldn't be trying to save a few reals on the toppings. The olives had stones, which is very inconvenient on a pizza.

Beaches
Praia Do Caxadaço is a picturesque beach cove with crystal-clear waters and a small sandy shoreline, surrounded by large climbing rocks that offer stunning panoramic views of the pristine rainforest and the glistening ocean. While it may feel like paradise due to its beautiful scenery and inviting waters, the beach tends to get crowded with tourists. Many visitors enjoy climbing the large rocks for an elevated perspective of the beach, but caution is advised for those considering jumping into the water from these heights.
Looks like paradise really. It's a small beach with big rocks around and amazing clear water. A lot of people jump from the big rock but just do that if you feel pretty confident about doing it! The view of the beach from the rock it's worth climbing there.
B B — Google review
Beautiful beach with some big rock formations that you can climb up to and get a good view overlooking both the crystalline water and intact rain forest! Only downside is that there’s a lot of people visiting at the same time so the beach gets kinda overcrowded.
Francisco S — Google review
Nothing relaxing about this beach unless your idea of paradise is a small strip of sand with tons of people and boat horns constantly going off because the tours seem to think this is a nice way to gather their people. The fact that this beach has a 4.8 rating at the time of posting this makes me seriously question whether people are being incentivized to leave 5 star reviews

Pouso Beach is a charming hidden gem nestled between lush hills and features a restaurant and a boat dock. It serves as an access point to Santo Antonio beach and the renowned Lopes Mendes beach, known for its stunning 3 km stretch of white sand, jungle surroundings, palm trees, and large boulders. Despite being popular, the expansive beach offers quiet spots away from the crowds.
Although it's mostly only used as a base to walk to Lopes Mendes beach, I thought it was very pretty. It was clean and quiet. It has a nice floating bar if you feel thirsty or peckish. But mind you, you'll need to get your feet wet to climb on the floating pier. Totally worth it!

This beach is a pitstop to the slopes Mendes beach, but it is still a a very nice beach. Too bad that a lot of boats stay there waiting for people.

Peaceful, beautiful place to relax. You can get there by a trail from Abraao or by boat. The bars offer pricey food and beverages since there's no electricity at this part of the island so bring your own when getting there!

Nice little beach with a good choice of food and taxi services, but it is quite busy and you do get hounded a little bit by the Taxi people at first. Not an issue overall, but this beach is more of a stepping stone to get to Lopes and back to town.

The trails from here to Lopes Mendes and Palmas are easy and you can spot plenty of wildlife. Not too much going on, on the beach, with a few basic choices for food and drinks. A pretty stopover to your next destination. Can take boats

Pousada Vitorino in Angra dos Reis is a charming and beautiful guesthouse located near Praia da Vila Velha and Praia da Figueira beaches. It offers a family-friendly environment with excellent amenities, including a restaurant, bar, shared lounge, and garden. The air-conditioned rooms provide sea views and come with free WiFi. Guests can enjoy activities such as hiking, snorkeling, and fishing.
(Translated by Google) We had a wonderful weekend at Pousada Vitorino. Our chalet was beautiful, beautifully decorated, and had a huge bed. The view from the balcony of the treetops and the ocean invites you to lie in the hammock and enjoy the sound of the sea and the birds. The linens were of high quality and smelled great, the bathroom was very hot, and there were also nice touches like a robe, coffee pods, water, and popcorn. The entire outdoor area of the inn is beautiful, with plenty of spaces for leisure and relaxation. The breakfast was delicious, as were all the meals we had at the inn. The value for money is excellent, especially considering the amenities already mentioned, and the fact that they already offer stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling, and beach volleyball. We took an hour-long kayak trip to other beaches, which would have cost at least R$200.00 per person. The beach is beautiful and quite empty, with calm, lush green waters, and you can reach other beautiful beaches via short, well-marked trails. The best part was definitely the hospitality and warmth of the staff. Stela, Fabiana, and Mr. Severino treat you with care and think of everything to enhance your stay. They're rare gems that management should cherish! (Translated by Google) We stayed at this guesthouse for five days. The place is very beautiful, the beach is calm and pleasant. The gardens are lush and beautiful. Chalet 3, which is in the Standard category, is ok. We had a double bed and two single beds. The beds are very comfortable. The chalet has air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The decor is simple. There is a TV, but the channels are very limited. It is not really needed, except when it is raining a lot. The bathroom is small and has little counter space. It could be better. On the beach there are sun loungers and umbrellas and various equipment is available. This is very good. In short, the guesthouse has many positive points and we really enjoyed our stay. However, it could be improved. Small details in the decoration of the rooms, an improvement in the bathroom, adequate bedside tables, reading lights (hotels forget that there are people who read). The guesthouse offers breakfast, which is plentiful and tasty. Lunch and dinner are paid separately. This is an aspect that could be improved. The dishes are delicious, but the menu could offer more options. Later I found out that you can order other dishes and they kindly made me a soup. The staff is friendly. I received a syrup suggestion from Stela and the manager brought it to me. Stela prepared a soup for dinner at my request. Fabiana was very attentive. Carmem was very kind. On a rainy night, our dinner was brought to our room. How kind! With very little, this inn could be a five-star! Just a few details. We plan to return. A equipe é gentil. (Translated by Google) I stayed at the inn during Carnival 2025, staying in cabin 6. The room was very clean, with a large double bed, 2 single beds and a table with two chairs. So it was very spacious and suited us very well. The room has a small minibar, but it met our needs. The bathroom is simple, but ok. I think it could use some minor maintenance (such as painting, finishing). But these are small details that do not interfere with the stay. The room has air conditioning and a small TV. The inn offers breakfast included in the daily rate, while lunch and dinner are offered separately. The restaurant on the island is quite expensive, so having meals at the inn makes more sense. We were able to visit other beaches by walking and doing some trails that last around 30 minutes each. We also used the inn's kayaks and stand up paddle boards, which are offered in the daily rate, at no extra cost. The inn also offers sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach, but the restaurant's guests use the space freely, so that was the only negative point. We had to ask for help at the inn a few times. So Mr. Severino has to go there every time and ask people to leave so you can sit down. I think a sign saying "reserved area of the inn" would be a big help, since there are no signs at all today. The inn also provides beach towels, which is great, but the towels were very worn and needed to be replaced. Finally, I would like to highlight the care and attention we received from all the staff from the moment we arrived. Fabiana, Stella, Laura, they are what sets the inn apart!

Nestled in the stunning Serra de Bocaina, the Trilhado Ouro, or Golden Road, is a captivating hiking trail that weaves through history and natural beauty. Established in the 17th century as an alternative route for gold smuggling from Minas Gerais, this enchanting path spans approximately 30 kilometers and typically takes three days to traverse. Along the way, adventurers can rest their weary feet in charming colonial-style lodges that add a touch of nostalgia to this remarkable journey.

Park
Sítio Forte is a hidden gem that offers an array of natural wonders waiting to be explored. You can embark on two scenic routes from here; one leads you directly to Aracatiba, just 6 kilometers away, while the other takes a delightful detour through the stunning Lagoa Verde, extending your journey to 8 kilometers. If time permits, I highly recommend opting for this second route! Along the way, you'll encounter breathtaking unspoiled beaches and the enchanting Longa waterfall.
