Ilha Grande is a lush and mostly undeveloped island that serves as a state park, offering visitors beautiful beaches, rainforest hiking trails, and charming coastal villages. The island boasts numerous idyllic spots such as the dazzling Blue Lagoon and Lopez Mendes, known as one of Brazil's most stunning beaches. With over a dozen signposted trails, ranging from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes, visitors can explore the island's natural beauty.
Amazing 🤩 go with “rio Havana” they are the best 👌

Breathtaking island vibes! Ilha Grande stole my heart with its stunning beaches, lush forests, and crystal-clear waters. Hiking, relaxation, and vibrant nightlife - this island's got it all. Don't miss the scenic trails, hidden coves. A must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers!
Ej M — Google review
Amazing place, quite rustic and rugged, every beach different. If you are able, get a private boat and beach hop. Better yet, become really wealthy and own a yacht. Loved this island and only explored a fraction

Ilha Grande was absolutely incredible! I had an amazing time ,it’s truly home to the most beautiful beach I’ve ever visited in my life. The food was delicious, and the people were so warm and friendly. Honestly, Brazilians in general are some of the kindest people I’ve met. This place is a paradise , unforgettable experience!

Ilha Grande is beautiful, however, your ability to explore it independently is incredibly limited. If you want to hike, the paths aren't well established so you need to book a guide which is incredibly expensive and the guides aren't great at responding to WhatsApp or website (I tried several). You must book in advance otherwise you'll end up doing nothing. If you want to see a lagoon on your own, it's only possible if you book a water taxi. The only way to do that is WhatsApp or to book onto a tour with other people. You can't do anything independently and must sign up to a pre-planned tour. The accommodation on the island is poor, everywhere. The toilet systems aren't good which means you can't even flush your own toilet paper. The restaurants increase prices dramatically for tourist season. Despite the natural beauty of this magnificent island, you can't travel independently, you pay very high prices to do anything and must go on a tour - i wish we had stayed in Rio.
Natasha — Google review
Stunning island with loads of different hikes across the island. You are directly hiking through the jungle to end up at beautiful beaches. It’s definitely worth a visit. Downside - transportation from one side to another with luggage is super complicated. As you have to 2 boats or you have to pay one super expensive taxi boat.
Florian — Google review
We didn’t love Ilha Grande. Befote coming, we were mesmerized by pictures and the fact that all Brazil guides say it’s a must convinced us. We felt that the island is like the Brazilian Benidorm: mass tourism, noisy, dirty and expensive for what it is. Perhaps it is because we had little time so we stayed in Aabrao and we came slightly off season, but beaches are absolutely packed with people, full of rubbish…. There is no sense of culture or calm here unfortunately…. I would not come back.

Mountain peak
Pico do Papagaio is a challenging yet rewarding 11km hike on Ilha Grande, leading you up almost 1000m in altitude. Starting around 2 am is recommended to witness the breathtaking views from the second highest peak on the island. The ascent takes about three hours through thick forest, offering sensational panoramic views of the entire island. While difficult and exhausting, reaching the top is definitely worth it.
Great hike! Very much worth it. Took us about 3 hours to get up starting at the town by average pace.
Ni N — Google review
I ran the trail alone, set off at 0420. Took 1.25 to the top and 1.00 back down. Hard going when you leave the track but the trail is pretty easy to follow. Take a good flashlight and plenty of water, don't grab the trees due to snakes and spiders. The view is well worth the effort. Saw howler monkeys, spiders, birds and what I think were a pair of capybaras.

Do not under erstimate this hike. But 10/10 definitely worth it. I will be back.

(Translated by Google) The trail is challenging. There are markings and no major hazards, but it's almost a three-hour climb, which can be quite tiring for some. It's beautiful up there, but there's little room to stay... and there are precipices that can be dangerous if you're careless. (Original) Trilha puxada.

(Translated by Google) Great view – but not to be underestimated! The hike is absolutely worth it: A fantastic view awaits you at the top. The route is quite challenging, though – around 1,000 meters of elevation gain, and the round trip took me about 4 hours. I'm currently quite fit, so I would recommend allowing more time – and definitely bringing more than 1 liter of water. The trail is poorly signposted; a GPS or an offline map is helpful. I found it pleasant to hike alone because I could set my own pace. If you're unsure, you can also join a guided tour – these usually start at night, so you'll be at the top for sunrise. However, you'll need to budget more time (and money) for this.

(Translated by Google) During the day and in good weather, the hike is great, and the summit is magnificent. The view is incredible! We saw several animals, including howler monkeys. Round trip completed in 8 hours, with a 45-minute break at the summit (departure at 8 a.m. and return at 4 p.m.). First thing to know: a guide is required for this hike between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. since 2023. During the day, nothing is required. The hike is difficult, and longer than advertised (it's between 10 and 12 km round trip). It's steep from the beginning, but there are small plateaus from time to time. Hiking poles are a huge help. You need 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person. There are markers all along the trail. Not many, but all the way to the end. The trail is well-marked by people passing by, and can be followed without difficulty during the day. The last kilometer is a little trickier to navigate, especially on the descent. Warning: at the end of the hike, the real trail goes left at a marker engraved with an arrow and goes around the peak to climb to the summit from behind. You reach the summit without too much difficulty, in the middle of the forest. You have to use your hands a little, but it's not too difficult. Anyone who approaches from the front of the peak, at a large rocky outcrop, has taken the wrong path. It's much more difficult and dangerous. I recommend using a map that works offline. The AllTrails map is good and indicates with a yellow marker when to turn left.

Lopes Mendes Beach is a remote and undeveloped gem, offering a serene escape with its pristine white sand, almond trees, and stunning mountain views. Accessible via a private hike or with the guidance of a local expert, reaching this natural wonder is an enriching experience that allows for a deep connection with nature. Despite being recognized as one of the world's top beaches, it remains relatively secluded, providing ample space for visitors to find their own tranquil spot along the 1.
A paradise, beauty beyonds any words all around, thin clean bright sand dazzling us under a beautiful sky, definitively one of the most amazing beaches I have seen in years. There is a bit of hiking to get there,an around 20 minutes walk across a stunning forest, we saw colorful birds in it and eagles on the beach.
Sardanapolo — Google review
Soft soft white beach when you step on the sand its like stepping into fresh snow that crunch sound! We walked from Abraão beach through the forest. If you are a hiker I recommend it, its a 2hr hike. BUT I’m not a hiker so took us 3 hrs while it was beautiful and we saw monkeys and birds if i do it again I’d take a boat so i have more time on the beach
Meytha A — Google review
Very good beach if you are a surfer. There are large waves there. If you want to swim this isn't the place. There are surfing schools on the beach, stands with drinks. There is no taxi boat that you can take from there (unless you have arranged pick up in advance).
Victoria H — Google review
This place is SURREAL! We got to visit this beach early in the morning and it was a magical moment alone in the world! There is a small walk of around 15 minutes to get there, if you are lucky enough you will spot monkeys and birds !
Estefania N — Google review
One of the most beautiful beach if ever seen. The sand is really white like in the movies and the water is so clean and nice. Once you there you don’t want to leave I promise you! A must see when you visit Ihla Grande! I recommend to hike to the beach it’s quiet challenging but nice to climb up and down through the tropical forest. And as mentioned before, definitely worth it
Zoltán S — Google review
Very long sandy beach. Apparently once voted among the best beaches in the world but I don't see why, as it is not very special or photogenic. The life guards mark most of the beach unsafe to swim and only leave a small part open in front of their watch tower. But that part is so shallow that it's not possible to swim there and beyond that there are huge waves so again not swimmable. The best thing about the beach is that it is so big you can find a spot with no one around. The trail to get there from the drop off point is about 20 minutes and you can see some cute looking monkeys there if you're lucky.
Petr V — Google review
What a beach 🏝 a real paradise beach. The beach is very long so you can easily find a suite spot away from the crowds. There is little food and drinks for sale on the beach, so make sure you bring some before you leave. It is also a bit of a muddy hike trough the jungle before you get to the beach, so best to wear the right footwear
Joachim S — Google review
Absolutely incredible beach. The sand is fine. The ground is clean. The waves are huge! We hiked 3 hours from Vila de Abraão and it was absolutely challenging and worth it. A must see when on Ilha Grande and Brazil!

Abraão is the main village on Ilha Grande, offering the most tourist infrastructure and accessibility from the mainland. Cachoeira da Feiticeira is a must-visit for hikers on Ilha Grande. The 13m waterfall forms a natural pool with crystal-clear waters, perfect for cooling off after the trek. Access to the waterfall can be via a moderate trail from Vila do Abraao or by boat to Praia da Feiticeira followed by a 30-minute walk.
This is a serious hike. It is mostly very steep uphill, if you think it's just a nice walk you're wrong. The waterfall is nice and the water is cold, but get there very early or you will encounter crowds and it is not as nice. At least a 1 1/2 hr hike from abrao, be prepared to sweat.
J D — Google review
It’s not a technical trek, the trail is clear and easy to follow, but keep in mind that most of it is uphill. I wouldn’t recommend doing it in the rain, as it becomes slippery and unstable, especially the tree roots that form part of the path, which turn quite slick. I went up early in the morning, perfect way to start the day. It took me no more than 50 minutes one way, but I was going at a fast pace and wearing proper sneakers
Karina M — Google review
Nice waterfall! The water is a bit too dirty for swimming though.
Natalia F — Google review
Nice walk and nice waterfall you can refresh when you reach
Anika S — Google review
The hiking was much longer and harder then we thought but really worthed it, but probably because the day before was raining a lot, so everything was mud. Took us 2 hours to arrive
Rauli — Google review
Another gem on Ilha Grande with cold clean water that you could drink if you want to. The hike to get there was rather challenging but if you’ve got a decent physical condition there shouldn’t be any problems!

Feiticeira is a small, secluded beach that can be accessed by boat or a hike with medium difficulty and takes about an hour and a half. The highlight of the journey is the Cachoeira de Feiticeira waterfall, standing at 15 meters high, where visitors can take a refreshing shower and swim in the pool. The trail also offers beautiful natural pools along the way. After enjoying the waterfall, visitors can continue to the nearby beach for more relaxation.

Pouso Beach is a charming hidden gem nestled between lush hills and features a restaurant and a boat dock. It serves as an access point to Santo Antonio beach and the renowned Lopes Mendes beach, known for its stunning 3 km stretch of white sand, jungle surroundings, palm trees, and large boulders. Despite being popular, the expansive beach offers quiet spots away from the crowds.
Although it's mostly only used as a base to walk to Lopes Mendes beach, I thought it was very pretty. It was clean and quiet. It has a nice floating bar if you feel thirsty or peckish. But mind you, you'll need to get your feet wet to climb on the floating pier. Totally worth it!

(Translated by Google) Incredible beach with a wonderful restaurant, but it is not registered on Google yet. The restaurant is called Cantinho do Otavio and the owner is called Mr. Silvano! He told us the story of why the restaurant is called "Cantinho do Otavio" and the reason for the name is because his father-in-law, who passed away, left the house to him and his daughter, so as a tribute he created the restaurant. With delicious home-cooked food and some fish and chicken options, he gives us the pleasure of being part of his life story, not to mention that his prices are much better and cheaper than Bar do Luiz and others on the island. A 10 with 5 stars!!! I wish all the success to Mr. Silvano and Cantinho do Otavio.

Praia de Abrãaozinho is a secluded beach located just 1km away from the main town, accessible via an easy hike over a relatively flat surface. The trail passes through several other beaches in Angra dos Reis, offering a peaceful walk surrounded by the bluish sea and Atlantic Forest. This beach provides a tranquil atmosphere with clear and calm waters, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.
A very nice beach overall with a few restaurants and vender near by should you need something to eat or drink. If you come early, the beach is actually not very busy (depending on season) but at about 1pm people will start to fill the beach, by 3pmish you'll have quite a few people (but still plenty of space to relax). The water is reasonably clear and calm. A great place to relax.
Maddog ( — Google review
It was OK. The beach was nothing too special, I would recommend Praia Preta instead if you are looking for a nice beach near Abraão. The pros of going here instead would be the fact that there are some restaurants here, a little less people, and clear water. However, the hiking trail there made it not worth going. It is not taken care of properly. There is lots of trash that stinks, and instead of having regular railings there are barbed wires close to the trail in places where people could easily slip, making it incredibly dangerous. Would not recommend the trail to anyone because of the dangers, especially during the rainy season when the path is almost guaranteed to be muddy and therefore extra slippery.

Wonderful quite beach, there’s a bar as well tog te some beers while chilling on the beach. It is a fair 30 min hike in the woods from Abrao. If you have shoes with you it’s better than flipflops. In some point you may need to walk in water depending on the tie

Inn
Pousada Vitorino in Angra dos Reis is a charming and beautiful guesthouse located near Praia da Vila Velha and Praia da Figueira beaches. It offers a family-friendly environment with excellent amenities, including a restaurant, bar, shared lounge, and garden. The air-conditioned rooms provide sea views and come with free WiFi. Guests can enjoy activities such as hiking, snorkeling, and fishing.
(Translated by Google) We had a wonderful weekend at Pousada Vitorino. Our chalet was beautiful, beautifully decorated, and had a huge bed. The view from the balcony of the treetops and the ocean invites you to lie in the hammock and enjoy the sound of the sea and the birds. The linens were of high quality and smelled great, the bathroom was very hot, and there were also nice touches like a robe, coffee pods, water, and popcorn. The entire outdoor area of the inn is beautiful, with plenty of spaces for leisure and relaxation. The breakfast was delicious, as were all the meals we had at the inn. The value for money is excellent, especially considering the amenities already mentioned, and the fact that they already offer stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling, and beach volleyball. We took an hour-long kayak trip to other beaches, which would have cost at least R$200.00 per person. The beach is beautiful and quite empty, with calm, lush green waters, and you can reach other beautiful beaches via short, well-marked trails. The best part was definitely the hospitality and warmth of the staff. Stela, Fabiana, and Mr. Severino treat you with care and think of everything to enhance your stay. They're rare gems that management should cherish! (Translated by Google) We stayed at this guesthouse for five days. The place is very beautiful, the beach is calm and pleasant. The gardens are lush and beautiful. Chalet 3, which is in the Standard category, is ok. We had a double bed and two single beds. The beds are very comfortable. The chalet has air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The decor is simple. There is a TV, but the channels are very limited. It is not really needed, except when it is raining a lot. The bathroom is small and has little counter space. It could be better. On the beach there are sun loungers and umbrellas and various equipment is available. This is very good. In short, the guesthouse has many positive points and we really enjoyed our stay. However, it could be improved. Small details in the decoration of the rooms, an improvement in the bathroom, adequate bedside tables, reading lights (hotels forget that there are people who read). The guesthouse offers breakfast, which is plentiful and tasty. Lunch and dinner are paid separately. This is an aspect that could be improved. The dishes are delicious, but the menu could offer more options. Later I found out that you can order other dishes and they kindly made me a soup. The staff is friendly. I received a syrup suggestion from Stela and the manager brought it to me. Stela prepared a soup for dinner at my request. Fabiana was very attentive. Carmem was very kind. On a rainy night, our dinner was brought to our room. How kind! With very little, this inn could be a five-star! Just a few details. We plan to return. A equipe é gentil. (Translated by Google) I stayed at the inn during Carnival 2025, staying in cabin 6. The room was very clean, with a large double bed, 2 single beds and a table with two chairs. So it was very spacious and suited us very well. The room has a small minibar, but it met our needs. The bathroom is simple, but ok. I think it could use some minor maintenance (such as painting, finishing). But these are small details that do not interfere with the stay. The room has air conditioning and a small TV. The inn offers breakfast included in the daily rate, while lunch and dinner are offered separately. The restaurant on the island is quite expensive, so having meals at the inn makes more sense. We were able to visit other beaches by walking and doing some trails that last around 30 minutes each. We also used the inn's kayaks and stand up paddle boards, which are offered in the daily rate, at no extra cost. The inn also offers sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach, but the restaurant's guests use the space freely, so that was the only negative point. We had to ask for help at the inn a few times. So Mr. Severino has to go there every time and ask people to leave so you can sit down. I think a sign saying "reserved area of the inn" would be a big help, since there are no signs at all today. The inn also provides beach towels, which is great, but the towels were very worn and needed to be replaced. Finally, I would like to highlight the care and attention we received from all the staff from the moment we arrived. Fabiana, Stella, Laura, they are what sets the inn apart! Praia do Galego is a hidden gem that beckons travelers seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Nestled near Vila do Abraao, this picturesque beach can be reached via an easy trail that meanders through stunning landscapes, including the enchanting Cachoeira dos Escravos and the striking sands of Praia Preta, known for their unique golden and black hues.
My favourite beach on Ilha Grande. It's just far enough for it to remain reasonably quiet most of the time but has good access either across other beaches or via a wooded path. No facilities so take your own drinks and snacks.

Estação Santa Luzia is a bustling transportation hub in Angra dos Reis, offering ferry and catamaran services to various tourist attractions. The catamaran, with a capacity of 120 people, operates multiple times throughout the day and offers round trip tickets at an affordable price. Additionally, there are options for tours between different points of interest and the opportunity to take a taxi boat directly to Ilha Grande. While the infrastructure is small, it is efficient and well-organized.

Mountain peak
Pico do Frade is a breathtaking destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike, standing tall as the second highest point in Angra dos Reis at 1,500 meters. With three distinct trails leading to its summit, visitors can choose their path from Vila do Frade, Mambucaba in Angra dos Reis, or Bananal in São Paulo—the latter being the easiest route. The journey offers a stunning contrast to the emerald seas and lush islands below.
(Translated by Google) Be prepared for a "tough" Challenge lol we entered the trail in Bananal at 12 pm and only reached the summit at 10:30 pm, of the 10 and a half hour walk, we did more than 5 hours at night, very difficult, so the The tip is to start early before 8 am. If you're an adventure seeker, the Pico do Papagaio Trail in Ilha Grande is a must-visit. This trail offers a thrilling challenge for hikers of varying skill levels, but it's particularly favored by those looking for a rewarding experience. The ascent can be tough, taking around 2.5 hours to reach the summit at approximately 980 meters, but the breathtaking views from the top make every step worthwhile.
Trail is indeed difficult but super nice - we took 2.5 hours up and 2 hours down, make sure to do the hike with sunlight if you do not hire a guide (so do not start after 12!) and enough water as you go up ~980 meters! Follow the green signs (see picture), would only recommend it for quite fit people as the track is not easy.

Provetá is a challenging destination, with a 350m ascent from the beach followed by a descent to another beach. Aventureiro Beach, aptly named for adventurers, can only be reached on foot from Provetá over the mountains. Accessible mainly by cargo boats bringing supplies due to limited permits for other vessels, this beach faces the open ocean and experiences large waves, strong winds, and currents.

Nestled in the stunning Serra de Bocaina, the Trilhado Ouro, or Golden Road, is a captivating hiking trail that weaves through history and natural beauty. Established in the 17th century as an alternative route for gold smuggling from Minas Gerais, this enchanting path spans approximately 30 kilometers and typically takes three days to traverse. Along the way, adventurers can rest their weary feet in charming colonial-style lodges that add a touch of nostalgia to this remarkable journey.

If time permits, I highly recommend opting for this second route! Along the way, you'll encounter breathtaking unspoiled beaches and the enchanting Longa waterfall.

(Translated by Google) It is a difficult place to access and it seems that only one person has managed to explore this place, the ecological guide João Pontes. There is no trail to reach this rock. Only he knows how to face the steep climb until reaching this “island” of rock surrounded by forest. The trail is difficult and without signs. The abundant vegetation makes the path narrow and challenging to walk. Without a doubt, the “aerial” view from the Mirante da Lagoa Azul looks incredible and I hope that one day more people will explore it to make it more accessible! From there you can see Lagoa Azul, the beaches of Freguesia de Santana, Saco do Céu, Enseada das Estrelas, Farol dos Castelhanos and much of the continent with its beaches, cities and villages.
