Restaurant Il Cigno - Trattoria dei Martini is a historic dining establishment located in the heart of Mantova. Housed within a 16th-century noble residence, it exudes an atmosphere that seamlessly combines old-world charm with modern sophistication. The culinary philosophy revolves around offering a renaissance of taste, focusing on the union of food and wine to evoke delightful emotions.
5 stars for a unique experience. After trying to get a table at 8 different places, we wandered in disbelief into Il Cigno, our ninth try. A last-minute cancellation had made it possible, we had a table. Lucky us.
As you walk in, you realize that you're entering into much more than just a restaurant. It's a carefully crafted experience.
The moment you cross the door, you are greeted by an elegant and experienced maitre d' who escorts you in. After neatly hanging your jackets, you are led into the main dining room, stunned by the spaciousness of the beautifully decorated historic space. The place comes gently to life with Venetian vases, early 20th-century paintings, and blossoming orchids. A unique theatrical set that gets you into the positive mood required for what it is to come.
As a starter, we had the 'culatta' and a salad made with endives and capers. The mains were a mix of pasta: Tortellini di zucca, Agnolotti with brodo, and tagliatelle. All beautifully homemade and humble in their taste. We also tried a traditional dish made with pickled chicken. The dessert was the cherry on the cake, cheesecake with strawberry sauce. A smile emerged; somebody had put their heart into preparing it.
But my review would not be complete without a special mention of the team of waiters who delivered the experience. A thoughtful team that matched the rhythm of our dinner to the best classical music. The execution was pristine, with all kinds of details contributing to making our experience truly memorable.

Every detail was perfectly attended to. The food was the best we’ve had in Italy. We would definitely drive an hour to eat here again. Also there is a medium sized parking lot right in front of the restaurant. We stopped here on the way home to Verona from a day trip.
We had a fabulous lunch in sophisticated and stylish surroundings. The service from Danielle and her colleagues was outstanding. We hope to return.
We spent such a nice evening in this fairytale of a restaurant on our first night in mantova. This is a restaurant-lovers dream! If you look at the reviews, you'll see that my wife (Amy) reviewed them last week and me this week ... that is because we returned just one week later for our second visit to Cigno (and it is an hour drive for us).
The food is impeccable - think Michelin restaurant level, and the restaurant is beautiful with outdoor patio seating and inside seating. Food and decor aside, it is actually the service that will win you over. The team is just absolutely amazing!

Excellent restaurant serving classic Mantuan food. The service was impeccable - my wife and I speak limited Italian and arrived with our 1yo son and no reservation, but the staff welcomed us with no hesitation and made us very welcome. Highly recommended
One of the best restaurants in Mantova. Il Cigno is simply one of the best restaurants in the city - historical venue nicely decorated, great service and excellent food. The menu is based on historical recipes of Gonzaga family, presented in a modern and elegant twist. Wine list well curated. Beautiful garden. Prices are higher than the average, but the value for money is great. Extremely recommended.

Incredible traditional food experience in the hearth of Mantua!
The food was incredibly tasty and reflect the rooted traditions of the city. The risotto was just incredible, the pasta slit dish was full of flavor and even the free grappa at the end was fantastic.
The service was familiar and professional and the design of the location reflects the spirit of this historical restaurants.
The owner was so nice to let us park the bicycle inside the courtyard of the restaurant.

The place comes highly recommended from several sources and as such was a slight disappointment. I had the local speciality tortilli stuffed with pumpkin which i found sweet to my tastes and my partner had sorbir di angoli which is a meat stuffed pasta soup, she liked it. Portions were quite small but we weren't that hungry anyway. With half liter house wine water and a small green salad that was 52 euro which is not cheap. Service was attentive and there was a nice buzz from the local crowd all ages. It was ok but nothing special.

Such a special restaurant; delicious traditional Mantua dishes - especially perfect risotto - tender, rosemary scented lamb. Friendly genuine service. And a lovely atmosphere. A restaurant that welcomes old couples (like us!), young families, young people out having fun. It all creates a wonderful ambiance of everyone enjoying delicious, affordable, authentic food. Easily the best address in Mantua and a privilege to eat here. Thank you to the whole team.
Amazing service. Amazing food. Tortelli was amazing, the best of local cuisine. I suspect they add some amaretto to it, giving it a 10/10 "sweet" touch to the dish together with the pumpkin (however, avoid it if you don't like the sweet flavor in main dishes). Amazing place! Very calm local tasty perfect place, exactly what you can dream in Italy! Especially I would recommend the starter plate - it is beautiful. Also the second dishes are very home made, nice serving. Donkey meat pasta tastes perfect. Very local tiramisu, lots of cream. Coffee is not very strong. Pumpkins ravioli tastes interesting.
Delicious foods. Specialized in regional meat cuisines as rabbit, duck meats. Pudding as a Dolce with coffee in a antique pot is super sweet. Better make a reservation over an email or a call. Full of people most of time.

Whenever we discuss our trip to Italy, we always mention the lunch at Carlo Govi. The food was absolutely amazing. The restaurant has a very elegant, calm atmosphere and the staff were incredible and so professional. They always checked on us, making sure we had what we needed, gave excellent recommendations and made us feel so welcomed. We will definitely pay another visit on our next trip to Mantova.

This restaurant was recommended by one of local ladies from Mantova also I found few good reviews in internet so we went there for a lunch. Small , cute , gave some exclusive feeling - good service , nice decor. We had some local cuisine inspired dishes with pumpkin and some pasta with ragu. My tortellini portion felt a bit small for 12 euros. I think there were 6 pieces. My friends pasta was ok , not really wow. But we enjoyed the whole dining experience. But it felt a bit pricey for a lunch. And they don't do any special deals unlike some other italian restaurants ( pranzo di lavoro ) . However I would recommend to give it a try
The food was one of the best dining experiences in my life. However what makes this place really amazing is the warm welcome of the owner and the staff. There was nothing of the pretentious atmosphere of a typical Michelin star restaurant.

Very arrogant and unfriendly place. First they refused me entering because "they hadnt have table enough big to host 3 people". When 2 minutes later my husband asked them, they've responded "kitchen is closed". Don't go to the places that disrespect you as a clients.

Antica Osteria Ai Ranari is a charming and unpretentious restaurant located near the historic center of Mantova. The rustic and welcoming ambiance, with simple wooden tables and paper tablecloths, offers a genuine experience of traditional Mantuan cuisine.
This is most certainly one of my favourite dining place in mantova. There is a nice selection of local dishes from the tradition and a very large wine selection, most of which are by the bottle and just a few by the glass.
The atmosphere is cosy and informal and the service is good.

It has been a few years since I have eaten in this osteria. I was not disappointed, from the service to the food. All was fantastic. Lunch on the 6th was a very good experience for all. Highly recommended. Don't forget to book in advance...

We were looking for a traditional mantuan place and this is the best place to get it. The selection of cheese from the area was good and surprising, the ravioli filled with pumpkin were really delicious and the fried frogs were crisp and tender, the sbricciola with sabayon for dessert was really tasty. All portions were abundant and the price correct with a good service.
We made a reservation for 15 people but when we got there they said that we never called 🤯 the server was gaslighting us and lying about us calling, we were very confused. They let us in eventually but we had to split up. The pumpkin ravioli was good but they did not give us any cheese to go with it even though I’m lactose intolerant but I wanted cheese anyways. 1 out of 5

We were searching for a good restaurant for lunch in Mantova, and we found the perfect place. It is the best restaurant we have ever visited. The atmosphere is delightful, featuring a personal blend of Sicilian and Mantovan styles. Chef Orazio and the staff treat us as if we are truly special. The service is excellent. We ordered Tortelli di zucca fatti in casa con burro e salvia, Spaghetti allo scoglio (catch of the day), and Luccio di lago in salsa mantovana con polenta grigliata. The Tortelli di zucca was sweet and comforting, with a portion so generous that I almost couldn’t finish it, even though it was absolutely delicious.
Coming from Taiwan, a country surrounded by sea and well known for our fresh seafood, we could truly taste the freshness here and we absolutely loved it!

Without a doubt, one of the best restaurants in Mantova. During our month stay in Mantova, my wife and I have eaten here a few times and are always delighted. The food is delicious, the service is top notch and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. We were usually greeted by the owner, Lily, and made to feel welcome and appreciated. We enjoyed many of the entrees but I particularly liked the bigoli fatti in casa con le sarde mediterranee and my wife raved about the tortelli di zucca fatti in casa al burro e salvia. I highly recommend dining at Ristorante Tiratappi when you are in Mantova. It is also a good idea to make reservations.
After decades of eating all around Italy, the last four days of eating in Mantua have revealed to me the essential distinctions of Mantuan food with the tastes of other Italian provinces. By chance, a few steps off the main thoroughfare street of Via Broletto along Via Leon D'oro, we discovered our first fish restaurant, not many within the city centre. After eaten in the first restaurant, it is with the aid of Google Map we located this second seafood restaurant Tiratappi, a short distance further along the same Via Leon D'oro. It turn out, this place serves relatively better honest food and much friendlier and warmer service. I congratulated myself for this discovery of this restaurant. I got to experience the uniqueness of known warm and friendly Italian hospitality in small homely restaurant, the warmth of family support service, friendly, casual yet adequately satisfying albeit not commercially overly refined but with equitable pricing. Cooking is indeed innovatively unique and concorted with fresh and ingenuous ingredients. A certain hidden gem.

Very nice Italian restaurant with great dishes. The service was outstanding. The dishes were excellent and well presented, even if ordered at closing time. We arrived 10 minutes before closing and we were still served and not rushed out as last clients. There is a cover fee for each person of €3 which was a surprise to us, but well deserved. I recommend this place when in Mantova. If you use the bathrooms here, it might not be obvious how to turn the water on for the sink; there is a paddle that you need to push with your foot :)

Leoncino Rosso is a highly recommended traditional osteria in Mantova, known for its rich cuisine and rustic ambiance. The friendly service and sensationally affordable prices make it an underrated gem.
We enjoyed 2 meals at Leoncino Rosso during our visit. Both were absolutely fantastic!!! If you want to eat earlier it’s highly recommended to get a reservation. For lunch I arrived at 1:30 and waited 10-15 minutes for a table. The staff were friendly and foot was outstanding! We tried dinner as a group of 5 without a reservation and were told to return at 9pm. The next night we arrived at 9 and were seated immediately. Highly recommend for those visiting Mantua!

I love this traditional Mantovani osteria. I would eat here every night if I lived here. Meal after meal, they achieve perfection. Perfection of taste, quality, portion size, their beautiful wines and desserts, and the service is as warm and professional as it comes. Thank you for all the amazing meals.
Was having dinner on the 10th of July, extraordinary warm evening. Food was average; an highlight on Ravioli Amari (stuffed with salvia and rosmarino), and a lowlight (semifreddo alla pesca), pretty “seasoned”, likely due to temperature. And here the good news finish. If I have to define the place and its atmosphere in one word, I would say: sad. Furniture, setup of tables and even the attitude of the staff was to me sad. If you decide to get there, it is suggested to book the table.
The food is always excellent. It is not pretentious and shows how the food can (and should) be the star of a restaurant. I would recommend a reservation since they always fill up quickly. They do offer outdoor seating when the weather is nice. We have eaten here 8-10 times within the year, and they consistently deliver quality food at a very resonable price. A true gem of Mantua!
Unpretentious place, I had very good stracotto from horse meat, like 70% of the other guests. 4,5 EUR for half a liter of vino della casa was very convincing. Great atmosphere outside. The waiters are not too attentive. Really recommended.
I can't say anything about the food, I didn't get to eat here. But the lady's face when I asked if they were open couldn't be any unfriendlier, she seemed really bothered to have to talk to me. I wouldn't eat here even if for free.

This place is nice. But I was not impressed with the service. Something felt a bit awkward. The food was good but not outstanding. They have a special pasta (maccheroni) with donkey meat that I tried. It was good, but I had much better expectations based on the recommendations I was given. The little garden inside where we were sited is nice and cozy. This place could be improved so much more if the staff would pay attention to little details like welcoming the guests and presenting their food in a special way. It has the potential to become a local gem but needs a bit of PR work.
Average food and pricy. It has a cosy back yard suitable for romantic dinners and closed larger groups. In the entrance hall there is an older man who expects that you come nicely dressed. At the time of my visit I was wereaing confortable clothing and that was not well received by the restaurant people. Wine is relatively cheap and they have many local brands. Do not order per a glass but take the small bottle. The place is suitable for large Chinese groups. The place is also accessible for a wheelchair. Preorders are possible if you call them before.

a telling tale of why you should never go back the the place of your dreams. I have been here 2 years ago and since then I have always dreamed to come back. I was here today: the pasta was tasteless, the salsa verde showed signs of age, the lambrusco was uninspiring and I felt the price was excessive. On the top of that a toddler kept screaming all the way during my meal, pampered by her mother and the waitress. Adieu, due cavallini, never lasts forever in this world.

Extraordinary food at a place that embodies what an osteria can (and should) be. They do not take reservations and there's a short wait until you can be seated for lunch. While you wait, you can take a picture of the day's menu written out on a blackboard. We didn't have to wait long, and we shared a communal table with a pair of lunch goers. Gorgeous, simple, seasonal, local dishes made perfectly. The house reds, and in particular, the lambrusco, were a perfect complement to our lunch that included savoury crepes, fettucine with seasonal greens, polenta and local fish. Desserts featured an apple cake and chocolate budino. Highly recommend if you happen to be in or even near Mantova (Mantua). And, if you're not, plan a trip so you can stop here for lunch. It's worth it!

Don't expect an English menu, but instead expect that people from neighboring table will recommend you what to eat. It was a wonderful cross-table conversation/experience (i was there for lunch). Great, social place. Would go there again if I would stay longer in Mantua.

We were enjoying our day trip in Mantua but when hunger knocks on the door, you have to answer. We made a point to eat earlier in the day as most restaurants are closed after 2PM and probably reopens at dusk. Whatever you love about real Italian food, you will find something delicious here, a menu that consist a celebration of flavours and ingredients. We especially enjoyed
Salame Mantovano with warm bread, Spinach salad with melon, shrimp with lime oil and sesame seeds. Primi: Pumpkin tortelli with melted butter and sage, a Traditional Mantuan dish with a little sweetness. We skipped Secondi to save room for one of their dreamy desserts. Indeed, one of the best Osteria if you are looking for truly authentic Mantuan cuisine. Friendly service and a charming, soothing ambience. The location away from the main square area has not affected its popularity among locals and tourists, come early or make a reservation.
I visited in October having heard great things about the tortelli di zucca. They did not disappoint, and neither did the other gorgeous hearty regional dishes I tried during my long lazy lunch. It’s a simple interior with supremely friendly service; as a solo traveller I value this highly, and the staff were really lovely. So much so that when I return to see a concert al Teatro Bibiena soon, I can’t wait to visit again.
Everything was perfect in this historic place. First of all, we had no reservation and they took us in at 12. For the whole time being there we did not feel anything but being very welcomed. The food was amazing and its quality justifies the price. If we turn back we will make a reservation, grazie!

We went there on a friday evening to eat fish (which is not very easy in Mantova) and got really disappointed. My partner got a salmon tartar that was very dry and garnished with strawberries and currants. I had a pulpo salad, which was okay, but really nothing special. For the main I tried spaghetti vongole…also very boring and we also ordered sea bream, which had so many bones, that it was not edible. The chairs are uncomfortable. Lugana is okay, but very overpriced. In total we had a check of 140€ and left disappointed.

From the start, bread was stale, at least a day or two old.
Ordered caprese for starter which was fine (at best), but then they started removing plates when one member hadn't finished.
For main ordered the sea urchin linguine (arrived with minimum sea urchin, but overall 6/10 for flavour) at €22. Final few mouthfuls and I found what appeared to be a staple in the linguine. I alerted the waiter at the end but he took it and shrugged his shoulders.
Overall poor service with minimal attention given, and some good food (gnocchi) but mixed with below average aspects.

But a few weaknesses detract from the pleasure of eating here: bread is poor - underbaked and slightly stale. Millefeuille pastry (in the stunning chicken liver and plum dish) should be much crisper and lighter - maybe assembled too far in advance? Poached peach was hard/under ripe. Papadelle stuck together in places so undercooked. Stir the pot! In a place like this, pasta should be perfect but sadly we didn’t feel that even our gentle mention was welcome. A mobile phone ban would also be good! Customers walking in on their phones, taking calls at the table spoils the atmosphere. Even so, the memorable flavours and creativity make this restaurant a special experience.
I tried their 4-course menu, and every dish was amazing! The tortelli di zucca was hands down my favorite—if I hadn’t gone for the full 4 courses, I would have definitely ordered a second plate. Hands down, best ice cream in Mantova and to be honest from every other place we tried in our Italy vacations. Every year we come back to Mantova on vacation and every year we eat at least one ice cream here daily.
True love exists in these gelatos... forget about Casa di Giulietta and have love in on your tongue and in your belly instead! These gelatos were 100% perfection... not too cold, not too melty, yet soft enough to stretch and rigid enough to not make a mess. The price is very good for a generous amount of serving and that’s what real gelatos are all about -about happiness. On top of that the gelato is served with an ice-cream scoop which dispenses consistent serving size every time, unlike with inconsistent disappointing “smears” with spatulas. The first serving I got was bergamot & sage (great) and ricotta with candied orange and almonds (loooooved this gourmet flavour so much and could taste that it was created with so much love 🥺) and after the first lick I knew I wanted to walk around for 2 hours to digest and come back for more. Second serving I got was hazelnut with chocolate and panna cotta with fig. Once again I was extremely impressed! The hazelnut with chocolate was hazelnut gelato with chocolate paste with small crunchy hazelnut bits - first time I’ve had a gelato with 3 different textures... the softest is the hazelnut gelato and the chocolate spread is firmer then comes the crunchy nuts 🥺... loved every lick! The panna cotta with fig has that delicious caramelised “flan” taste. Overall I was extremely impressed by this place and has totally made my day twice! First of all, do not go without book, at least one day before you should call. In the city, there is no restaurant that you cannot eat without book, especially if it is weekend. They have some traditional meals, but not everything for example "luccio in salsa" that we want to try. And, you can find another traditional meal which is "tortelloni di zucca" and "capunsei" which are quite good. Some of staffs are not so polite, but some of them are really cute. Atmosfere of the place is normal. Price are expensive for a place named "osteria", coperto was 3 euro. So, thank you for all.
So we we're actually looking for something more typical for the zone and less touristic.
And luckily we found few people who recommended the same place. Well the locls not considering this place in the city center because its about 7 minutes walking from there but completely worth it.
So the restuarant itself is very nice and very warm, and they have 3 levels so plenty of room.
The service was really great, we had a waiter who explained about every dish. Important to point out that everything we tried was so good, in particular my favorite was "spalla cotta al lambrusco ". Check the photos.

I arrived late, after my friends had finished their lunch already. The staff were kind and flexible, serving me food at 2:30pm while my friends sipped their wine. We had really nice beef tartare, several types of pasta, anchovies and salad. Friendly, relaxed environment, good choice of wines. A nice touch: there’s local art on the walls, and the owner’s LEGO collection is displayed around the restaurant: it’s interesting and fun to spot LEGO characters and sets all around you.
The food itself and the atmosphere were good but the service was a mesh. First, the girl who took the order did not inform us that the meat we ordered, beaf filet and pork cotollettes, were not accompanied by anything else, just plain meat.
