The 37 best places to go out in Modena

We got the last minute call from reservations team that we get a table. The restaurant is in the old town well decorated but dark( even in lunch). 12 courses 350 per person is ok for 3 Michelin. Service is Perfect but lack of human touch. We tried the 30 years anniversary menu. Tbh I was expecting more and have been wanted to come here but most of the dishes were flat. They were good but of 1 from 12 gave me wow factor. So it is nice to go but not wow for me and my partner 😭. Massimo (head chef) came and say hello and tell story of many dishes to every table ( this was so nice to hear) I think if the service also tell a bit story will also be very interesting ( they were quite rush when explaining) in conclusion not no.1 world best restaurant in my view.

Overall, a good experience that I would recommend, albeit I couldn’t help but leaving slightly unfulfilled. Not many dishes were truly stand-outs apart from the duck (which to be fair was easily the best I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a good bit). Some of the other dishes like the “bean” pasta and crunchy pasta were interesting and fun, but maybe not quite as enjoyable as I would have hoped on the flavor side. Don’t get me wrong. It’s good. But from a 3-star level and the inherent expectations that come along with this restaurant’s reputation, I thought it was slightly below what I hoped for. I also found the service to be just a little bit on the stiff side, apart obviously from Massimo himself who is an absolute delight.

Amazing experience, the staff is amazing and make sure you have a good time. I would say the wine pairing is a must do to extract the the most out of the experience. Our experience started with a portion of grissini, they arrive fresh and warm. They are so good that I could eat that the whole night. The sommelier offered us a glass of sparkling wine from the region as an aperitif, that glass was amazing. After that we started the experience, the first dish is called panned e aqua, paired with a Sake-Yuzu. The first bite of the dish didn't give me much, but once I got the first sip of the sake, on that moment I noticed if we didn't ordered the pairing the experience would be very different. The dish mixes textures with panned gratato, breadcrumbs and creamy oyster and some seaweed. The flavours popped with the wine, the mix of textures and flavours did the right balance. Second Course, brodo in bloom and three small bites. A onion and caviar dish, a pizza frita and very fresh Herby bite. The stars of that for me were thr broth, that was complex and light Providing a deep experience on flavour. The pizza frita was a master piece, tha flavours over the simplicity was amazing with a pop in your mouth with the cheese inside. The onion bite was very light and balanced, was my wife's favourite. The last one, very fresh, lots of herbs that create a unified flavour in your mouth. The wine, such unique wine that I can't describe the smell of it. I've asked the sommelier and he describes as: "the smell of the sea wind in the morning with dome apricots" Next dish, with the same wine. Was La Contadina. A dish with aspargus and some dark greens. The dish was so aromatic and flavoursome. This was one of the highlight of the night. The aromas that relies when you bite the greens was something that I can describe as unique. Now the Mare Nostrum, this is one of the dishes that push the socre down of the experience. The dish is a interesting texture experience, with "plastic" on the dish. Doing a challenge on what we have in the ocean. Flavour was nice, mix of textures and charcoal. But what destroyed the experience was that one of the pieces of the the seafood was rubbery. That just destroyed the whole experience of the dish for me. My wife said her was ok. Next dish, pasta e fragility. This one the pairing shines again. A dish that would be OK, was turn into a nice flavour combination. Instead of wine here we hade a local beer. Making that pairing amazing. The challenge here is to find what is bean, what is pasta. Good experience, nice visuals. La genovense, our pasta dish. That pasta dish was very well executed, flavour, texture and aroma. That is what I was looking for. The dish is a construction of freshly cooked pasta and yesterday pasta. And the sauce, THE SAUCE!! The only thing that was missing was bread to clean the plate. Now, the main course. The Jazz of the Duck. That was a very nice surprise to cook the duck with some Japanese infusion and inspiration. Massimo creates a katsobushi of duck. The dish comes with bread, whole wheat, natural fermentation. The duck breast with the sauce. A salad and a crispy bite of the katsobushi on top. That was amazing, just not as amazing as the secret second part of the dish. It was a savory panetonne, that thing... my God... that was delicious. Now the first dessert, fast bees slow honey. I'm not a big fan of sweets in general. But the complexity and combination of flavours with a crispy of bay leaves with honey. That created an amazing experience. The next one, another dish that make me feel the execution wasn't quite right. Thus dessert was to show the sunset on Sicily. The dish should have the flavours of lemon, coffee and almonds. The flavour of the lemon was so intense that I could not taste the almonds. And almost disappeared the flavour of the coffee. This the experience lost another point. The Gelati to close the night, and the last bite the duck strikes again. Each gelato provided another great experience. Amaxing, two things let it down that is why 4 stars.

Absolute bucket list meal. Staff was extremely friendly. Food was delicious and presentation amazing. Well worth the high price. Both tasting menus were exquisite. Wine pairing a must (although could’ve done without the beer). We sat in the back room so it felt little secluded. Thankful to have enjoyed the experience.

Bean-shaped pasta from the different Italian regions paired with beer; burnt tomato pasta; duck; panettone duck and the milk pre dessert were all divine. Foie Gras in the ice-cream was a nice surprise.

Cold atmosphere, guests whispering, bored staff (except the sommelier). Pasta cold, duck barely warm. Same duck reduction in 3 of 11 dishes, celery sauce twice. Napkins forgotten, coffee late. For a place with three stars, it’s the small things that should make the difference — and they didn’t. ⸻ ⭐️ Long version: We’ve been to many fine dining and “Hall of Fame” restaurants around the world, but sadly Osteria Francescana was one of the most disappointing experiences. Perhaps, like with certain modern artists, we just didn’t understand the vision — but the entire evening felt distant and soulless. The atmosphere was cold (and not just the room temperature); guests whispered, and the staff seemed disengaged. Only the sommelier appeared to genuinely enjoy his job. Napkins were forgotten, coffee arrived late — small details, yet at this level, those are exactly what should make the difference. Culinarily, things didn’t improve much. The pasta was cold, the duck only slightly warm, and the same duck reduction appeared in three out of eleven dishes. A celery sauce showed up twice. That repetition made the menu feel uninspired and mechanical rather than creative or emotional. Maybe there’s an artistic layer we simply missed — but for us, the experience lacked warmth, precision, and passion. For a Hall of Fame, three-Michelin-star restaurant, it fell well short of expectations.

What more can you say about the best restaurant in the world… absolutely AMAZING! Service, spot on, intimate, warm, inviting, friendly… what else can I say. Food, WOW. The only thing I struggled with the was how much food but that’s not a real problem! It was all amazing.

Especially as a Ferrari fan, this is a must, both museums are. Buy the combined ticket online as it will be cheaper and you can enter immediately without waiting. I would avoid going in August if you can, but you should still go even if you can't avoid main holiday time! While my experience was still great, the amount of people and Kids wandering around can test your patience when you'd like to take pictures. Else you'll find everything you want see, beautiful cars and the story behind each one. You can walk through if you just want to see the cars and take some pictures, or you can spend quite some time by digging deeper into the different cars and learn how it came from design to reality.

Definitely a Must! The scenography of the cars, the presentation on the big screen, the location, the Supercars exposed…. Could have spend more time there but had to leave for the rest of the journey after a good 2-3 hours visit! We loved it!!! Will come back to admire art on wheels!

A stunning tribute to Enzo Ferrari’s legacy. The architecture alone is breathtaking—modern yet deeply respectful of history. The vintage car displays are beautifully lit and curated, and the multimedia storytelling brought tears to my eyes. Even if you’re not a car enthusiast, this museum is a celebration of passion, innovation, and Italian elegance.

Such an amazing display. The video presentations and abundance of information was fantastic. Photos documents and history in the 2nd part of the exhibit has hours of extra enjoyment for the Ferrari enthusiast who really wants to see the details. Just amazing. You can drive a virtual Ferrari or enjoy walking through the cars on show. Arrived by bus from Bologna, it was easy enough to find with google maps. We purchased tickets when we got there. We only did the one museum but a 2nd extra one is available when you purchase your ticket. Price was fair. Access to this museum was easy by bus but I’m not sure about the 2nd one so research ahead.

The visit to the Ferrari Museum left me underwhelmed. Given Ferrari’s storied legacy, I anticipated a richer exploration of the brand’s history and Enzo Ferrari’s life. Sadly, the museum lacks depth, with sparse details on the iconic founder and the company’s evolution. The car collection, while sleek, is a bit limited, featuring fewer models than expected. Interactive experiences are minimal, with just two small exhibition halls that feel underwhelming for such a legendary brand.

Amazing display, emotional atmosphere with very rare hyper cars. Allow 1.5 hours for a proper visit of both buildings. Parking can be found most days on the surrounding streets.

Worth to visit!! Amazing vibes ! Some of the cars are gorgeous! And they have the simulators , 25 euros for once . It has two parts . And they are bars with food and souvenirs area has clothing and shoes and tiny stuff .

Beautiful covered market with a superabundance of top quality food stalls. Cheese, cured meats, fruit and veg, fresh pasta. The choice and quality under one roof are extraordinary. A lot of restaurants as well. Quite expensive but within reason

Fun market to visit, great for a bite to eat as well. We stopped in Modena for a few hours before heading to the Ferrari Museum and enjoyed our time here.

My wife and I spent a month in north central Italy and came across Mercato Albinelli during a trip to Modena. What an incredible experience! This historic market opened in 1931 and still feels like the heart of the city today. At its center stands a beautiful bronze statue called La Fanciullina del Mercato, which perfectly captures the spirit of old Modena. The market is a celebration of Italian life. Everywhere you look there are colorful displays of fresh pasta, cheeses, cured meats, fruits, vegetables, and local wines. The atmosphere is warm, the vendors are proud of their craft, and the entire place feels alive with history and passion for good food. We spent hours exploring, tasting, and enjoying every moment. Mercato Albinelli is a true gem and a perfect stop for anyone who wants to experience authentic Italian culture and cuisine. A fabulous market and a wonderful memory from our time in Italy.

Great food market selling the best selection of fresh local food. Also visit the cafe, the food is fantastic.

So sad we didn’t take pictures of what we ate at the market, but there were so many stalls with fresh cooked food that you could eat on the spot. We had polpette of ricotta, baked eggplant with Parmesan cheese, something with kale, pumpkin out the oven, everything was super tasty. The market also has several bars for bites and drinks. I really enjoyed the ambiance in here.

Even though I was told that it is tourist traps but it is good to experience some local food. Price consider high but as a tourist it is good for a just a little taste on everything.

got a tiny breakfast sandwich and a cappuccino and yes, the taste lives up to the hype. it's really delicious and you can taste the high quality. however, the small seating area is really narrow w a lot of foot traffic. so the next day i just walked up 70 meters to pizza xx settembre and got my (just ok) bkfst over there because the space was wider and the view better. service is really friendly, you order and pay inside in a very tiny space. and you need to bus your table.

Yep, eat here! Simple but excellent textures and flavors—well combined to make super nommy sandwiches. Doggy friendly on the street side but the market prohibits the entrance of dogs.

The best sandwich I ever had. There's no room inside but outside is safer and more sociable anyway. Next to the wonderful Modena food market. I ate here a few months before I became a vegetarian, and not being able to have this sandwich again is my only regret ;-)

Came here last year (After seeing this place on Master it None) and loved it! So we made sure to include it in our Italy trip this year! We ordered a range of the panini (small sandwich) every morning. They rotate what is available each day, and they are all amazing. Great prices and nice atmosphere in the small seating area. A legendary place, also featured in the show master of none. Located right outside the market, the sandwiches here are probably the best I’ve had in my life, The crust is so crunchy yet they’re soft from inside, the vegetables have such an amazing taste, everything from the cheese to vegetables is out of this world. Run by two sisters, they’re both such humble and loving souls. Also do try the region special Sparkling red wine ( yes, Red) called Lambrusco. A must visit if you’re in Modena.

Very interesting Roman cathedral in Modena. Stone and sculptures outside, bricks inside, darkness and simplicity of Roman pure architecture. Some remarkable sculptures and tombs inside.

One of the most impressive cathedrals I have seen in my life. The architecture is amazing the murals of stunning in the use of marble is unique giving a wet all liquid form to the stone.

Unique cathedral protected by UNESCO. To visit the first floor a 2 Euros contribution is recommended. There's a sarcophagus with the sacred bones of Saint Geminianus. Definitely a place worth of visiting.

This is well worth it visit, you can get half way up the tower and this gives you a very good view of the city around the tower, very interested information is available as you climb.

An incredible piece of architecture, inside and out. The inside was not what I expected it to be. Definately worth a trip up the tower (a seperate entrance) for some amazing views. The stairs are mostly enclosed so it’s not too bad if you aren’t keen on that sort of thing.

Beautiful building, but most charming was the little chapel inside

It is recommended that you go as soon as it opens, otherwise you may have to wait for an empty table. The pasta and meat were very good. The panna cotta prepared woth amarena cherries was excellent.

This traditional trattoria was recommended on many blogs we read and the lonely planet book, a lot of hype. It was absolutely incredible - bustling with locals and serving delicious traditional pasta cooked perfectly. Some of the best food we have had in Italy. Left my husband speechless. Do the pasta tasting menu - we had tortellini with butter and sage, and the gramigna sausage ragu both were highlights!

The obligatory queue before opening time is richly rewarded for its patience. This bustling and efficient trattoria packed full of diners anticipating their meal has the atmosphere of a big family occasion. The food is sooo good - obviously home cooked and freshly prepared. The accompanying wine options are fitting and everyone leaves with a feeling of satisfied contentment. Make sure you get to dine here at least once during your visit to Modena.

Great place to eat, very authentic with just as many locals as tourists. The place was super busy at lunch and the food was very good, staff was very polite despite being slammed with tables. Worth the visit is in Modena. My wife and I had pasta, split a secondo and a side with small bottle of Lambrusco, dessert and 2 caffes and it was 56 euro, a solid deal for all we had.

Some of the BEST food our whole trip. We were recommended to come here after our balsamic tour and were soooooo glad we did. If you’re reading this review do your best to get a reservation, otherwise jump on the waitlist ASAP! We’re vegetarian and they had plenty of options and every dish was delicious! Also the owner was so accommodating and we appreciate how hard he worked to make sure people could get a table and eat the amazing food!!!

A very local experience in the heart of Modena! The restaurant is open for lunch, and you have to ring the doorbell to get into. The food was very delicious and freshly prepared. The decoration was also very unique. I recommend this place if you are in Modena!

Mamma Mia! I really don’t understand these sub five star reviews. This is the best restaurant in all of Italy. I don’t care whether you’re in Rome or Venice or Florence. Take the train to Modena and come here stat the food, the people, the wine will make you wanna come back for lunch the next day. Absolutely unbelievable I want to shed a tear, thinking back about the plate of food I had. Absolutely incredible!

This was an excellent local restaurant. We went there with three teenagers and the five adults. The staff was great Our waiter Allesandro was excellent and made the dinner fun. I had the bistecca and it was excellent and the tortolini in broth was great. There was a tortellini in a Parmesan cheese days le that was excellent There was a tagliatelle and porcini mushroom and a guanciale that was slow cooked with potatoes and it was excellent We had a great meal.

This little trattoria in the heart of Modena serves excellent food. Stepping into it you feel as going back in time and experiencing traditional style of Italian service and food. I highly recommend the donkey ragu, it was one of the best tagliatelle I had in my life and it’s enough reason to go back to Modena. I recommend you make a booking if you wanna visit this trattoria!

The place is lovely and definitely worth a visit but at least if you are going there for lunch I advise to check out what's the menu of the day. The menu in fact changes every day and they don't allow variations. The options are really interesting but for example, looking at the pictures I really wanted lasagne and they were not available that day. Similarly, what my wife was hoping to get was not on that day. At lunch they do 2 rotations. Everyone gets in at the same time and leaves at the same time. Food is not served "per table" but "per course". So for example all the customers who ordered "tortellini" get them and the other person at the same table waits until they serve whatever food they have ordered. Not ideal to build a nice atmosphere. In general, it felt like being at a station of a supply chain. At the beginning the staff gave us a few dry answers. They opened up and became a bit friendlier after a while.

Maybe my favorite meal in Modena. The wait staff was nothing short of amazing. They had great suggestions and helped my kids make choices. We didn’t have reservations, but they were able to accommodate us outside with almost no wait. The pasta was great. Very authentic. Prices were very reasonable.

I say this a lot but this was genuinely one of the best meals I've ever eaten. I look back at pictures of this every single day and it makes my mouth water. Too bad I am across the Atlantic because I could eat here every single day for the rest of my life. Just incredible.

I don’t remember staff telling us we won’t be served, but I do remember Adam Sandler touching my girlfriend without eye or verbal contact. Owner’s reply speaks about his professionalism itself… ✌️ REVIEW: Tried to eat there twice. We left after first attempt when the staff was rude. During the second attempt we actually sat there but the same staff guy (probably one and only - i guess it is owner or idk) totally ignored us, while italian guest were served fine. We felt very unwanted and left without interaction after 30 minutes. I guess and hope, that the restaurant is ok when you are local or you know the Adam Sandler lookalike staff in person. If you speak english or look touristy, you won’t be served. Many reviews seems suspicious.

Torre Ghirlandina is an impressive landmark, both inside and out. We’re really glad we bought tickets to climb to the top—it was definitely worth it. The tower has a slight lean, which you can actually notice as you make your way up the stairs. The interior is fascinating, with the staircase winding up along the walls in a spiral pattern through all four sides, which was really unique and fun to experience. At the top, there’s a panoramic viewpoint offering stunning views of the city from every direction. A truly amazing experience and one I’d highly recommend!

It’s quite a climb to the top. There is no elevator and the stairs are dark and narrow. You don’t have to be an athlete to do it but make sure you place yourself. It’s an amazing structure that leans a bit but the tour guide is saying that an earthquake helped to right it. The metal screens don’t let you take a clear picture of the town but it’s quite beautiful. There were once bells here that rang out for the town. It is an unesco site. Enjoy!

Nearly 200 steps lead to the top of the tower, from where a wonderful view opens in every direction. On hot summer days, the temperature is perfect up there—cool and airy. Architecturally, it’s outstanding as well; I really don’t understand why it doesn’t receive as much attention as the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

We climbed up in to the tower. Nice views and guide introduced the tower and its history. The bellringers have lived up there in the tower ! Cool circumtances !

Be sure to *kindly* ask the attendant at the observation deck for more information about the construction of the tower. When we visited the very nice woman had some photos of the staircase in the spire above the bells. She also noted there used to be ropes that extended through the floors of the observation deck, which were used to ring the bells all the way from the ground level.

Great panoramic view. The tickets were only 3 eur pp. We purchased tickets in the ticket stand inside the tower, but you can also get them online, however the page did not work at the time of our visit.

Stunning Romanesque stonework and a slender bell tower with wide views; the climb is short but memorable.

Although it is located far from Modena, it is well worth the effort to visit. It is the house where the master lived. It bears the traces of his footsteps, it preserves his smell, you can feel his feelings. It is a living house, full of memories and emotions.

It is amazing place filled with Luciano Pavarotti life,paintings,furniture,clothes,etc. It fills like he if still here,somewhere around the corner,in the next room.

One of the best, simplest meals of my life. What an experience of simple regional dishes prepared and cooked to perfection. I had the menu Classico, 4 courses but portions were just right so you didn’t leave feeling like you needed a nap. The waitress was fantastic and I cannot recommend enough! Book now!!

Iconic and we'll deserved reputation. Only 5 tables makes it hard to book but worth it! Have to check the date and confirm by email, make a deposit and then get a confirmation. $50 per person was just around what the bill was so it is perfect. Got the cheese platter and it was awesome. The cold cuts with the fried bread is amazing. Pasta of course is the best. The by the glass wine selection is awesome with a lot of different styles and unique bottles, fair priced and very exotic grapes to go with the food (the waiters can guide you very well). Cozy as expected for a small space, it's right in the back of the store, you go through the kitchen and staff spaces. Everyone is so friendly. Full of tourists but far from tourist trap. Must go!

Very lucky to have the last table booked on the same day. A place with full of history. Heard of this place first because of Master of None. And then accidentally found out its relationship with the Giuseppe Giusti family for the balsamic vinegar. Though now the family changed to another one, the food here is great. The price is on a higher end. The codfish cream with fried polenta is quite tasty. And the service is very good too. The waitress is very kind to split the meals into two for us to share. Would highly recommend.

I have been to Hosteria Giusti almost 10 times over the past few years, and it never disappoints. The Morandi family has run this place for many years, and the quality is top level. I have eaten gnocco fritto in many places, but this is my favorite. The pastas are so good I often get two pastas rather than a secondi. Ceci, the host/waitress is wonderful and is always great about wine reccomendations for each course. It is very small, so you must book well ahead. If you know you will be in Modena, you should make a point of eating here.

A very special restaurant awaits in the back of the deli shop. It tastes like heaven. We made reservations a few months in advance as it only has 5 tables available. The service was very attentive, and interior felt like old school charm. Wonderful experience!

We stopped by this little restaurant on a side street in Modena, Italy while seeing the sites like Ferrari and Osteria Francescana. The seating was extremely limited with primarily outdoor benches with umbrellas. As a fun side you got to sit and chat with random people high appeals to us. This restaurant is primarily for a quick bite while on lunch from work. The food was okay at best. Neither of us were overwhelmed with culinary achievement. The tortellini was good, but served in a steel bowl which made it feel cold and uninspired. The sauce on the tortellini was basic with nothing that added to the pasta. All together a little bland. The each with rigatoni was good. Per the waiter they used mint in the sauce which added a layer of flavor that made you want another bite to place what you were tasting. Overall, this is a locals restaurant for lunch sandwiches and quick bites. The people make the atmosphere, but unless you are travelling with co-workers connections are limited and everyone is rushed. If we lived in Modena we would go here for workday lunch or brunch.

We were really excited to go, but it is just an over rated place that serves the same stuff you can find anywhere in the region at double the price. The waiter made even a big scene when my wife asked for salt. He kept on repeating that the place was linked to Bottura. Good for them, but sad when they try to make you feel that you should be honoured to eat a 13 euro plate of standard tortellini just cause there is a link to a famous chef. I would not recommend

Get the #1 panini. Freshly shaved prosciutto, a slightly stinky fontina, grilled and marinated peppers, all in deliciously crunchy bread! Ultimo! And for only 7€ it's a steal. Great wine and atmosphere. I like to sit at the little bar and watch the cooks work. Open kitchen. Be warned, place is tiny, so if you go in the winter, book ahead for a party of 4+. In spring and summer they have outdoor seating. Lovely owner and team. Go!

Fantastic spot that serves great food with friendly service. We ordered a rosette, rolled up pasta with bechamel and meats, and it was one of the tastiest dish we had in Modena. After having dinner at franchescetta58, we wished we would have gone to here instead for more food.

We had two wonderful evenings with Alessio sampling Lambrusco and being introduced to friends and customers who were also there. Great wine and the chance to meet and chat to folks. Oh and you can wander off into the night with a selection of bottles of course😃

Favourite place for a drink in Modena. It’s basically a sparkling wine shop and you can drink the bottle you just bought at the table. The guy that works there is a lovely lad and really knows his stuff and every bottle he recommended was great. I only regret not buying a few bottles to take home with me.

This restaurant is a real jewel of the historic centre of Modena. Here, fresh pasta is the absolute protagonist: tortellini, tagliatelle and fried dumpling are prepared with great skill according to traditional recipes. Amazing home made pumpkin tortellini and terimisu. The tortellini was the perfect balance of salt, sage, and flavour. The terimisu was delicious with espresso mixed with the mascarpone, the cake drenched in sugared espresso and a strong coffee flavour topped off with cacao nibs. Best Tirimusu I’ve ever had. I highly recommend this place

Everything was worth it.. we had reservations (a must). Mushroom Crepe appetizer was outstanding and the Balsamic glazed beef with potatoes was my favorite. One fun note: The cloth tablecloth pattern was matched to the paper (high quality) napkins! lol

Great restaurant with traditional dishes in a warm old style Italian restaurant. Do not skip the oven roasted potatoes as they are served with a delightful herb salt. Small seating area out front but even though it was protected from wind we sat inside because we like to be warm. The food was very good but they have very very stiff competition with all the incredible restaurants in Modena.

I was there a Friday evening and without a reservation. -they squeezed me in but told I only hade I only hade the table for an hour. -I really appreciated that and it worked well for me, but it meant that I went for main course only... Cotoletta alla Bolognese was on my list of things that I had to try on this trip - it was good and the cheese sauce did contain a lot of cheese :) No Italian beers, no fizzy drinks that I like, I ended up drinking a small German beer (absolutely nothing wrong with German beer, bu i like to try to eat and drink "local").

We really loved *Vecchia Pirri* in Modena! The food is delicious and truly traditional — it tastes just like homemade Modenese cooking. Everything was fresh and full of flavor. The staff was very kind, and the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. We highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Modena. We can’t wait to come back!

We arrived around 7:30 p.m. to find the restaurant empty and briefly questioned our choice. By 8:15, however, every table was filled—clear proof we had come to the right place. The meal was exceptional. We began with seasonal, homemade pumpkin-filled pasta, followed by perfectly sliced steak served over fresh rocket salad, complemented with 24-month aged Parmesan and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. The flavors were balanced and beautifully presented. A truly memorable dining experience, and one I would highly recommend.

We loved this place. Friendly helpful staff and great food. Very busy with local Italian's, so that is always an indication of a good restaurant. Our only regret was that we only found this place on our final night in Modena. Had we found it earlier we would have visited several times during our stay.

The food was excellent. I got the prosciutto and the tortellini and everything was delicious. The fried bread that came with the prosciutto was heavenly. SO fluffy and crisp. The broth that came with the tortellini was hearty and savory, and the pasta itself was super fresh. The service was a bit strange. Our food took a bit of time to come out (nothing egregious but long enough to make you notice). The waiter was also a bit strange and borderline rude at times, especially when taking our order. Overall, definitely recommended for the food, just be aware of the points on service.

We met a couple of friends here for lunch. Everyone loved OSteria Stallo del Pomodoro... traditional cuisine done with a modern mindset. It was a pleasant day, so we ate outside in their lovely courtyard. We started with a very nice salumi platter and fry bread, paired with a high quality Lambrusco they recommended. Two of us then had the lamb shoulder while the other two had risotto with mushrooms. Both were excellent. If we had been staying in Modena, we would have gone back.

Overall a pleasant experience eating out in Modena. Had the tortellini in broth, tagliatelle, risotto with asparagus and the flan with fennel and goat cheese. Also an excellent recommendation on the Lambrusco Rossi which complement the dishes nicely. Personally I like the risotto the best. Friendly wait staff who was kind enough to split the food to 2 plates to allow both of us to sample all the dishes. Can recommend.

The staff were friendly and the place itself is pleasant. However, the food was poor and served extremely late. The vegetables still had soil on them – both the spinach that came with the meat and the potatoes – which is unacceptable in any restaurant. They brought my companion’s plate without serving mine at the same time, and we sat down at 7:30 pm but only got our food at 9:10 pm. The service clearly prioritised Italian customers over foreign visitors, which I can understand to some extent, but do not consider acceptable. This is not a place I would recommend to travellers hoping to feel welcome and well taken care of. Modena is full of wonderful restaurants – a true paradise for gastronomy – so I would suggest choosing somewhere else.

We’ve been lost in Modena for a one night layover and this place kinda saved us. Initially a bit cold service, but everything afterwards was fine - decent food, good drinks and even late smiles.

It was a recommendation from a local, but we were soo disappointed. Starting with the service which lacked consideration and finishing with the food that was really average. The jar of pork fat was disgusting, the salad was ok-ish and thank God we only paid 2€ of the shameful coperto!

Worst restaurant I have ever been to anywhere. Staff completely ignore you. We sat for 20 mins while the staff ignored us with no sign of a menu. Eventually we managed to speak to a member of staff and then sat a further 15 mins. The staff were not busy and just wandered round aimlessly just serving their regulars. We eventually left and found a stunning restaurant nearby.

What an amazing find this place was!! We did not make a booking and were welcomed into the restaurant by friendly staff. The atmosphere was lovely and vibrant for a Tuesday evening. We are English-speaking and the gentleman serving our table spoke no English, but this honestly didn’t matter at all! He was so friendly and cheerful and between us all, we managed to order what we wanted and even have a few laughs together. The menu is online and you can easily use google to just translate it to English. We all ordered pizzas and it was honestly the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life. The dough was incredible and all of the toppings were so fresh and tasty. One of us ordered a HUGE pizza (the Tricolore) - I highly recommend this if you want to try a few different pizzas as a group. I would go back to Italy just to have this pizza!!!

I think it's a best place for pizza in Modena City center, also in the menu there was many other dishes, I tried burrata con Alicia e pizza con ricotta e melanzana, was new pizza for me and was very delicious... Local pizzeria that feels authentic and has ok prices. They have a lot of seating in the garden which was very nice in the evening. The service was the best i have ever experienced in Italy. For the real Modena experience I recommend the old Modena pizza and a glass of Falanghina 👌

La Smorfia is excellent. Super nice pizzas with a crispy base. They have a Carlos Sainz (F1 Driver Pizza). You might lucky but I would highly recommend booking.

The pizzas were very well made. They are more of traditional Napoletana , but well made. The topping combinations are mond blowing. Nothing fancy about the atmosphere, but it's clean, the service is fast and it's pleasant. Highly recommended.

Outstanding. One of the best pizzas I've ever had. Fluffy and flavoursome dough with creamy buffalo stracciatella, it's a masterclass in pizza making. I had the Mortadella e Pistacchio and loved it. The waiter was so helpful in explaining the menu and offering helpful suggestions and I loved the presentation of desserts at the end (I chose the delizia al limone). Very relaxed and authentic atmosphere also. It's really worth a visit if you're visiting Modena and fancy a quality pizza & service.

Immediate addiction with the bowl of scrumptious Tarallini All'ol'io (we bought two bags to take with us). The meatballs/polpette were sooo good and the vegetable plate burrata e sapori Della Terra was amazing. Mozzarella was incredibly fresh/young and delicious.

We were in Modena for a few hours, so we decided to stop by. The AC was very strong, which was a relief since it happened to be a very hot day. Entry is free for minors (under 18), €2 for people aged 18-25, and €6 for normal visitors. There are also free (and clean) bathrooms, which are very hard to find in Modena! I easily spent 45-60 minutes inside! The gallery has a small collection of Egyptian artifacts and many terracotta sculptures, oil paintings, marble busts and more. It has a good selection of religious art too.

Well organized modern gallery with a collection of some note, though you’ll have to travel to Dresden to see the heart of the collection, which was sold off in the 18th century. Nonetheless you can see masterworks by de Roberti, Tintoretto, Velasquez, Veronese, Bassano, Dossi, Spada, a great selection of Guercino paintings, and probably the world’s largest collection of Lelio Orsi paintings.

Cute trattoria on a quiet Tuesday, we sort of picked it at random, and it didn't dissapoint. Sure, it lacked a bit of ambiance - we were practically alone - but the food and service was great. The star of the show was the tortellini in chicken broth, very tasty. I could have eaten 5 more plates of it!

This restaurant is such a gem! A bit away from main street offering such a cozy atmosphere and exceptional food and service. The dinner was definitely in our top 3 most memorable experiences throughout 10 days trip in Italy!

During aperitivo time you just pay for the drinks to get free access to the buffet. The buffet is not bad at all and the drinks are about 20% more expensive than the regular price ( without aperitivo). For instance medium size beer (0.4L)is €6 during aperitivo time

On our three day trip, this was our pick for a more modern restaurant, and it was a delightful surprise. Great raw material, perfect execution. An very well marinated egg yolk on top of a beef battuta with shaved truffle was followed by the yummiest tortellini in parmigiano creme and a beautifully tender slow-cooked pork filet. Good wine list, nice service, and a quite stylish, if somewhat too-cool-for-centro-storico decoration. We sat outside in the back, which felt a bit more relaxed than inside.

What happens when a guy who is passionate about garage rock and craft beer decides to open a bar? You get Slanzi. Just a fun local hangout that is welcoming to the odd tourist. Two beers later and I met everyone at the bar! Beer selection is great, with plenty of local brews, and great imports. Sours, IPAs, strong ales, you want it, they have it.

Awesome new pub, that opened a year ago, I believe. Tons of international and local brews, by the bottle and on tap. The owner plays great music and is very friendly and bilingual (English). It's a small and cozy spot, near the Duomo and café bici. Very unpretentious and welcoming. Try one of their IPA's.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and the cocktails are amazing. They have three A4 pages of cocktails, and you can even create your own cocktail if you want to. What is also pretty great is that they give you free appetizers and a small bowl of salted chips along with the cocktails you order, and they taste really good too (the chicken strips are NOT free, they’re separate from the appetizers). We visited lovely Modena town and after walking around we stopped by this bar. The place was buzzing, almost all tables were taken but we managed to find a free one. They have a loooong list of drinks to choose from, starting at 8 euro up to 12-13 euros. The service was really quick given how busy the place was on Saturday evening. Drinks were tasty and strong. We came during „apperitivo time” so along with drinks there were some mini snacks served hot and fresh. We enjoyed the food, drinks and atmosphere. We had a plate of pasta con gambieri and zucchini, a flavourful dish which we enjoyed with a glass of Chardonnay. Being surrounded by bottles of wine from ceiling to floor, including some well-known brands like Laurent-Perrier champagne, made for a very convivial atmosphere. The waiter was very efficient and helpful and couldn’t have done more for us. A fun place to have lunch if you are a wine-lover.

I know its sounds strange but I have been there 1 year ago,Archer in Modena is undeniably a stunning venue with a fantastic concept. The design is modern and sophisticated, creating an atmosphere that immediately draws you in and sets high expectations. Unfortunately, the service completely ruins what could have been a remarkable experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff were dismissive and, frankly, rude. There was no warm welcome, no acknowledgment of our presence for several minutes, despite the venue not being overwhelmingly busy at the time. When we finally flagged someone down, we were met with curt responses and an obvious lack of interest in helping us. Simple requests, such as water for the table or clarification about the menu, were met with eye rolls and sighs, as if we were inconveniencing them by asking. The disorganization was evident, but what made it worse was the sheer lack of courtesy and care. It felt as though we were being rushed through the experience. Any attempts to provide feedback were brushed off with a dismissive attitude, leaving us feeling unwelcome and frustrated. While Archer in Modena is visually impressive and has an innovative concept, the appallingly rude and unprofessional service casts a dark shadow over the entire experience. Until there is a significant improvement in how staff interact with guests, I cannot recommend this place. A stunning venue deserves better, and so do its patrons.

We passed by today, and surprisingly behind a dark door we found a beautifully decorated wine bar. Food was really tasty, and there is large variety of wines. Great atmosphere , we enjoyed a glass of Chianti and a glass of Nabbiolo, alongside a dish of starchino chees with potatoes, and a Bacala with purée and olives. For dessert we shared 'zuppa Englese' which is a local sweet pudding, it was not too sweet which was great. Totally recommend

Fantastic! I have been going to this place ever since I was a kid, and I was positively impressed with how the restaurant was renovated in the past few years. The place looks new without losing any of the traditional cuisine. The latest time my wife and I were there was for lunch on December 26th. We had a tris of pastas to share and we couldn't have been more happy. We ate the lasagna, the pumpkin tortelloni, and the cotechino tortelloni with lentils. For dessert, we had the zuppa inglese and the apple and custard pie. Both were delicious. I definitely recommend this place to anyone in Modena town center. Make sure you book a spot before you go.

We were recommended this restaurant from the lonely planet guide and weren’t disappointed….the food was delicious and tasty. The only waiter showed us the menu and explained what the dishes were. After we had our first plates me and my brother were still hungry and so we ordered another plate and while we were waiting the waiter offered us some cheese with a special sauce which he didn’t make us pay for. We were even invited to thank the trainees in the kitchen ourselves, which was such a moving moment. They were as special as the food they created. The dishes brought flavors I had never tasted before, yet everything fit together perfectly and was absolutely delicious. Even the drinks came from different countries and added another layer of discovery. Roots is not only a restaurant—it’s an experience that stays with you long after.
