1Catedral Metropolitana de Santa María la Real de Pamplona

Catholic cathedral
Cathedral
The Catedral Metropolitana de Santa María la Real de Pamplona is a must-see 15th-century church with a neoclassical facade and late-medieval Gothic interior. It replaced an older Romanesque temple and features an impressive cloister and the alabaster tomb of Carlos III, ruler of Navarre in the 1400s.
The Catedral Metropolitana de Santa María la Real de Pamplona is not only a stunning Gothic cathedral in Spain but also a place filled with fascinating history and mysteries. One of the most intriguing stories linked to the cathedral is about its hidden crypt and the tomb of King Charles III of Navarre and his wife, Eleanor of Castile. King Charles III of Navarre, also known as Charles the Noble, ruled in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Unlike many medieval monarchs who sought military conquests, Charles was a reformer and peacemaker. His reign brought stability to Navarre, and he commissioned the reconstruction of Pamplona’s cathedral, giving it the grand Gothic façade that still stands today. However, what makes his story eerie is the legend surrounding his tomb inside the cathedral. His sarcophagus, a stunning piece of medieval funerary art, shows the king and his wife lying in eternal repose, their hands gently clasped together—a rare depiction of love and unity in royal burials. Locals whisper that on certain nights, when the cathedral is quiet, the sound of faint murmuring can be heard near the tomb. Some say it is the spirits of Charles and Eleanor still conversing, watching over their kingdom even in death. Others believe it is the echo of monks who once prayed continuously for the souls of the royal couple. Adding to the mystery, beneath the cathedral lies a crypt that remained sealed for centuries. When it was finally explored, historians discovered human remains, ancient artifacts, and what appeared to be a forgotten section of the medieval church. Some even believe that secret passages exist, leading to hidden treasures or lost relics of Navarre’s past. Whether the whispers are real or simply an effect of the cathedral’s acoustics, the Catedral de Pamplona remains a place where history and legend blend seamlessly. Would you dare to visit the tomb at night and listen for the voices of the past?

A site that’s worth a visit. For €5 you can enter the massive cathedral. The outside of this magnificent building is boring compared to others, but on the inside the many richly decorated alters are really worth a visit. One remark: the explanation of the alters is quite short. We’ve preferred a more elaborate explanation. Perhaps with qr code, or more text. But even without the elaborate explanation, it’s a beautiful place to visit! Even on a hot day the cathedral is fresh,
Hartger V — Google review
A truly beautiful cathedral and well worth time spent in visiting. Fortunately not very busy when we got there, making the whole experience even better.
David R — Google review
I loved the Cathedral Metropolitana de Santa Maria! The must visit in Pamplona! There is a museum inside and there is a fee to enter, discount for students, kids, elders and pilgrims. Takes more than an hour. Totally recommend it!
Maria A — Google review
One of the most interesting cathedral I have ever visited. Inside there is also a museum you have to visit (it earned the best museum few years ago). Take at least 2 hours to visit everything.
Radu B — Google review
Incredible cathedral, and the attached Abbey. For sure, the most significant sight to experience in Pamplona.
Captain K — Google review
This was a pleasant surprise for an impromptu visit. At first I was surprised that they were charging 5 euros to enter the church. By the time I left, I was surprised they were only charging 5 euros. There are some really beautiful and interesting nooks and crannies to explore within the church-museum.
Paul P — Google review
Well worth the entrance fee which was €5 each. Plenty to see and just in the church part. There is a whole maze of exhibitions to work your way through. It is very well done and interesting so give yourself a decent amount of time. Please check opening times between 6 and 14 July.

The Museum of Navarre is a captivating 4-story art museum housed in a former hospital, featuring a diverse range of exhibits including mosaics, portraits, ancient maps, archaeological pieces, and works of art. The museum's location also offers visitors the opportunity to explore the Gothic church of Santo Domingo from the 16th century and the Castle square surrounded by beautiful 18th-century buildings.
It is a space that showcases the history, culture, and art of the Navarra region. The museum boasts a collection that spans various periods and artistic genres. It was established in 1956 in the building of the Misericordia Hospital, which operated from the 16th to the 20th century. Visitors can also enter the Renaissance chapel connected to the building. If you're looking to escape the bustling atmosphere outside, this is a great place to visit.

The "Togado de Pompelo" is an ancient bronze statue depicting a male figure dressed in a toga, a traditional Roman garment that symbolized citizenship and authority. Located in the Museo de Navarra, this statue dating from the 2nd century AD, is an important artifact from the Roman period when the city was known as Pompelo.
Kent W — Google review
Good exhibition about Navarra history. Housed in an old hospital, the collection spans chronologically over 5 floors. Neolithic utensils, Roman mosaics, Muslim medieval jewel box and plenty of pictorial works from gothic to modern times. The entry price is a treat: 2 euro!
SolorToursBarcelona — Google review
5 floors with different art from B.C to nowadays. Spacious, very clean with attentive personal. You need 1,5-2 hours to see all stuff. I like modern art and floor with ancient coins. Saturday evening and Sunday is free (other days the entrance fee is 2€). TVs with documentaries. No cafeteria ☕️, but lockers for your stuff 👍
Nadia R — Google review
Entrance was free due to restorations and the lady at the information point was very helpful and welcoming; the only problem was that none of the labels, texts, descriptions were in english:(
Nefeli P — Google review
What a great place to visit in Pamplona. This small, well laid out gallery/museum houses a combination of very interesting artefacts from the region, supplemented by artwork, up to contemporary pieces. A highlight for me was the prehistory section and in particular the abauntz map - the oldest in Western Europe! The column heads from the Catedral are also spectacular to view up close. A lovely way to spend a some quiet time in Pamplona.
Ian M — Google review
Es totalmente gratis. It's totally free. There's a lot of great modern art, historical artifacts, and classic art, including a Goya!
Ian G — Google review
Very interesting, not all the exhibitions were to our taste but nonetheless worth a viewing. The exhibitions are spread over several floors so there are stairs to climb but there is also a lift.

Museum
Plaza de Toros Monumental de Pamplona, a historic bullring built in the 1920s, is an iconic venue where the annual San Fermin bull run culminates in a thrilling display of bravery and tradition. With a capacity for nearly 20,000 spectators, this architectural marvel hosts not only bullfights but also various sporting, cultural, and music events throughout the year.
It's impressive to see the Arena and the whole world behind it! They have done a great job in creating the story that you follow from the entrance, all around the Arena to the stables. There is an audio guide to explain at every station. At the final hall there is an image and video presentation of the bullfighting over the years. Fascinating! Entrance 7€
Effie L — Google review
Interesting history and self guided tour of the Pamplona Bullring. I will say, it made me quite sad to see the event on screens and in pictures. I think it's time this tradition ended. But viewed historically, the visit is enlightening.
Kym P — Google review
Plaza de Toros de Pamplona – 3/5 Stars ✨ Watching a bullfight at the Plaza de Toros de Pamplona was definitely a powerful and unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was electric—the crowd was loud and passionate, and the noise during the fight was incredible. It was amazing to witness such a deep-rooted cultural tradition and see how skilled and coordinated the people involved were, from the matadors to the banderilleros. However, I couldn’t help but feel conflicted. It was hard to watch how one bull faced so many opponents, with the fight clearly stacked against it. I had expected a more balanced contest, but in reality, it was one against many, and the outcome felt predetermined. While the matadors were clearly experienced and performed with precision, it left me questioning the fairness of the event. In the end, it’s a fascinating tradition, full of history and emotion—but also one that challenges you morally. Worth seeing once, but not an easy experience to process.
Gudmundur B — Google review
Went here for the corrida and absolutely loved the atmosphere, i understand that during busy days of san Fermin keeping the seats of the arena super clean can be tricky .. but the ambience was top notch
Bikram B — Google review
Visited during San Fermín 2025. It was extraordinary and one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life. If you wish to go there for the bullfight (corrida de toros), have in mind that you can bring alcohol inside (as much as you want 😂) And there are plenty of people selling tickets outside (some are cheaper than the websites)
Behnam — Google review
Funny and thrilling experience: after the bulls run for 800 meters on Pamplona streets, they arrive to the bullring and are kept inside; then there are little cows to enjoy jumping and dodging them. Sometimes they hit hard.
Luisa O — Google review
Opened in 1920, it is a first-class bullring that can accommodate 19,721 spectators. It is not only the venue for traditional Spanish bullfighting but also the place where the Running of the Bulls, or Encierro, ends during the San Fermín Festival. During the San Fermín Festival, performances take place from early in the morning.

Do NOT expect to see any worthwhile astronomy exhibits - in fact, the minimal science-related displays were covered by a 'Women of the Generation of '27' temporary exhibit. I'm all for recognising the importance of women in society, but this had absolutely NOTHING to do with ASTRONOMY. The domed cinema is nice and the movie we saw was entertaining for kids, though it was too focused on being 'cool' and not enough detail was put into the actual characteristic/science of the planets and stars. Not a bad family activity for a rainy day, but please Planetarium folks - focus on astronomy!
Trebor N — Google review
Amazing presentation on the rounded screen. It was in Spanish and we speak English. However, we still enjoyed it. Then there was a verbal presentation by one of the people that works there. She spoke very quickly so could not understand that. Enjoyed that less. Beautiful and only 6. Euros. Closes at 2 pm. So limited time to be there.
Gayle K — Google review
Awful - we arrived as a family of 4 speaking English (or French) and were told that there was no show today, only available in basque. And tomorrow only in Spanish. Is it not meant to be open to tourists? They have built an expensive building and forgotten what it's for. Ridiculous.

Nature & Parks
Park
Jardines de la Taconera is a picturesque park in Pamplona, known for its free-roaming peacocks and deer. The park offers stunning sunset views from the city's ancient wall and features beautiful trees, a bird sanctuary, and proximity to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage walk. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Ate Berria bridge and Corralles de Santo Domingo where bulls are kept during San Fermin.
One of the oldest gardens in the city, it is a French-style garden designed in 1830. The area, once home to the Taconera Fortress built in the 17th century to reinforce the western side of the Pamplona citadel, has since been transformed into a walkway. Walking through the park offers panoramic views of the Río Arga and the city of Pamplona. While typically a peaceful and tranquil space to enjoy nature, it can transform into a lively atmosphere during festival periods.

This is the most beautiful park. It has formal gardens beds laid out in the French romantic style. The old wall and moat is incorporated in the design. There are thousands of trees including very old sequoias and cedars. We were traveling in September and the flower plantings were beautiful.

What a wonderful park, it's already beautiful right now in the dead of winter, I can't imagine how nice it must be to walk around in the spring and summer! Lots of green, beautiful trees, chickens and roosters in the protected area, a bunch of deer roaming around, and I even saw two peacocks! It was an especially nice walk during the sunset. Absolutely recommended you stop by this park.

Everyjing well built and modern BUT, there are no sockets anywhere in sight. If you go for a congress be ready to have a dead phone & laptop somewhere during the day. Internet and even phone signal ar very hard to get in some of the rooms. Uneasy to find some exposition rooms, the signaling has loads of room for improvement.

The permanent collection is amazing. The Rothko, Picasso, and Kandinsky are great in terms of international artists BUT stay for the Pablo Palazuelo, Jorge Oteiza and Antoni Tàpies artworks that are the heart of this museum. It’s always worthwhile to ask what seasonal exhibitions do they have! Also check out the terraza.
Daniela S — Google review
Actually an art gallery rather than a museum, with a good but small collection, almost all modern/contemporary, and all wonderfully displayed in a clean, modern space. Very quiet - we had the place to ourselves. My favourites were the two large, angry (to my mind!) Tàpies pieces; they really made the visit worthwhile. Note that entry is free throughout 2025, in celebration of the Museum’s 20th anniversary. Also, look out for special exhibitions - we were slightly disappointed there wasn’t more to see. The museum is on the higher northern edge of the University campus, with wonderful views across the green campus. It has a lovely restaurant (also very quiet!) but sadly they weren’t able to offer anything to appeal to my vegetarian partner. If you’r exploring Pamplona on foot, consider visiting here on the way to/from Yamaguchi park.

This museum was out of town and a good 30 minute walk from our hotel. So we debated a bit weather we should bother. We decided to go as my wife is a fan of modern art. To be honest most of the time I don't get it, some of the stuff I have seen in various museums I have seen a child could have done so I don't get what all the fuss is about. Half the time I think good on the artist they have taken the museum for a ride. This museum was the exception it has a small but well chosen number of pieces. But what transformed my understanding was the very knowledgeable guide who gave us an insight into the significance of the important pieces and with that explanation transfor6my understanding of at least the pieces they are exhibiting. Well worth the excursion but make sure you take the guided tour.

Customer service is distant and unpleasant, not welcoming, and the atmosphere is uncomfortable from the moment you walk in. Furthermore, the lack of staff motivation is immediately apparent, which is not surprising considering the layoffs and poor management of its employees. A business that starts like this can hardly go far. I certainly won't return, nor will I recommend it. Citadel of Pamplona, also known as the New Castle, is a pentagonal fortress built in the 16th century under the reign of Felipe II. The Italian military engineer Fratin was commissioned for its construction. Although originally pentagonal, only three bastions remain today. In the 18th century, it served as a prison for notable figures.
Beautiful space for a walk and surprisingly big as well. A definite hot-spot for dog walkers so watch where you're stepping on the grass. One area has chickens and different birds, They have birds as well if you can spot them. A great place to while away the afternoon or walk of some of the excellent local food.

Not much left to look at, but worth a visit. Go past the monument and walk around what's left of some of the old city walls and get some fantastic views.

Nice park to walk out relax. You enter for free
Θοδωρής Γ — Google review
A truly amazing space; you can spend ages exploring its extensive network of fortifications, while the centre of the citadel has been made into an attractive park, which somehow enhances rather than distracts from the powerful impact of the fortifications - it’s great seeing an historic space finding a modern purpose. As with many of Pamplona’s parks, the space is dotted with sculptures, adding further interest. A “must visit” experience if you’re in Pamplona, even if you only have 15 minutes to walk through its centre. Indeed, since it’s next door to the bus station, it’s a good place to pass time if you’ve a wait for your bus. And it’s all free and open 24 hours a day!

Enjoyed looking around this city. Ate at some great bars and enjoyed the pintxos. Be aware that shops will shut for a long lunch and everything quietens down. The citadel is worth a look as a lovely quiet place with lots of shade. Art exhibitions are there too - shut for lunch though!
Amanda S — Google review
It was built between 1571 and 1645 under the orders of Felipe II of Spain to defend Pamplona. The fortress was designed in the Renaissance military architectural style with a star-shaped layout, and each corner had defensive shelters. In 1685 and the early 18th century, its defense system was reinforced with an external crescent-shaped fortification. Today, the military function has disappeared, and the site has been transformed into a park, offering a space for locals and tourists to relax and enjoy. Visitors can also walk along the moat. Various cultural events and exhibitions are held both inside and outside the fortress. During the San Fermín festival, fireworks are displayed here.

Iglesia de San Saturnino is a 13th-century sanctuary with two towers, one of which boasts an iconic rooster-shaped weather vane. Located along the Camino de Santiago, this landmark holds historical significance as the site where San Fermin was baptized by San Saturnino. The church's construction reflects its defensive role during conflicts between neighboring boroughs in pre-city Pamplona.
Opening times are unclear. I tried 4 times but it was closed. The Church of San Saturnino was built in the 13-14th centuries in the Gothic style, as both a place of worship and a fortress, protecting one of the city's three boroughs during the medieval period. In 1222, the rival neighboring borough of San Nicolás destroyed the roof of San Saturnino. In 1276, during the war with the other borough of Navarrería, its two fortified towers were instrumental in its defense.

Impressive and memorable church in the old town of Pamplona.
Vladimir B — Google review
A beautiful church which is well preserved. It has quite a plain exterior but of entering the richness of the decoration is stunning. The wooden floor is unusual and quite noisy to walk on. There was a service happening and difficult to quietly wander around. There is such beauty in the unadorned stonework. The ribbed ceiling so astounding.

The most beautiful church in old quarter of Pamplona, I think. (Although I never visited the cathedral, because I was too cheap to play for entry!😬) The best thing was, they also had weekday Mass.

Excellent monument of medieval Navarese culture and architecture. Unfortunately majority original interiors we lost in result of several baroque reconstructions. Fortunately two Gothic chapels survived. There is excellent bas-relief of XIV century with mounted knight. Admission is free but any donation is welcomed and highly appreciated. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light.
Oleg N — Google review
This church has the original gothic worship area that has a porch along the street. Inside you see a larger addition that has a much more baroque sensibility, with the dichotomy being a bit overwhelming. The older part is more serene and definitely worth a look.

Iglesia de San Lorenzo, also known as the Capilla de San Fermin, is a centuries-old church located in Pamplona. The ornate and gilded interior houses a revered statue of the city's patron saint, San Fermin. This Baroque chapel plays a significant role during the San Fermin Festival, where people gather to pray to the saint and participate in religious activities.
The building was built in honor of Saint Lawrence, with the original parish dating back to around 1230, although very few traces of the medieval structure remain today. The exterior was remodeled in the Neoclassical style in 1901. The famous San Fermín Chapel, built between 1696 and 1717, is located here. During the annual San Fermín Festival in July, the building fills with visitors. A little further away, there is a monument dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
Seokjin H — Google review
Such a beautiful church. We were luck enough to arrive just as a service was about to start. The church was in darkness and as the service progressed, the lights were turned on in sequence. Just magical and moving. The richness of the interior, especially altar is astonishing and belies the simplicity of the exterior.

Dates to the 14th century but was rebuilt in the 19th century in the Neo-Classical style. It houses the Baroque Chapel of San Fermín, dedicated to the patron saint of Pamplona, whose feast is celebrated during the San Fermín festival which includes the famous Running of the Bulls.

Lovely church on the edge of the historic center of town. There is a side chapel with the statue of San Fermin in it. This is the statue that they parade around town, and the chapel is highly desirable as a wedding site. The interior is suitably ornate, with a quite air of solemnity about the entire place.

The Monument to the Fueros in Pamplona is a significant historical landmark commemorating the 1893 protest defending Navarre's Foral Laws. This 19th-century monument features an ornate column with a statue of a female figure holding a representation of the regional laws of Navarre. The base of the sculpture includes allegories devoted to Work, Independence, Peace, Justice, and History. It stands as a symbol of the region's history and independence.
Beautiful landmark at old town, south west corner of plaza del castillo. Nice place to hang out and have some helado or yogurt from nearby stores.
Dexter C — Google review
In 1893, when the Minister of Finance, Germán Gamazo, attempted to modify the regional tax system, ignoring Navarra's unique legal rights known as the fueros, the public reacted with strong opposition, leading to the Gamazada. As a result, Navarra managed to preserve its fueros. To commemorate this event, a monument in an eclectic style was erected in 1903, led by Fiacro Iráizoz Espinal and Manuel Jimeno Egúrvide, funded by the public. This monument symbolizes the pride of the people of Navarra.

Perfect location in the old town but still very quiet and calm. The apartment itself was clean and modern, good kitchen space and extremely comfortable bed. Our host was friendly and responsive, I definitely recommend this little gem!

(Translated by Google) My husband gave me a weekend in Pamplona and I booked with you, it couldn't have been more appropriate, everything immaculate and very new in the very center of Pamplona. We were well cared for and advised by the highly recommended host and very happy, this time we were able to enjoy it, since last year we had to cancel it due to a family issue and they did not have any problem returning our money. Thank you again and we will return another time. By the way, Pamplona is a wonderful city full of history and very welcoming where going is returning.

(Translated by Google) New apartment and very well located in a quiet area but close to restaurants and areas of interest. We had all the necessary services. They let us in two hours early and the girl we spoke with was very friendly and efficient. We hired a parking lot for 10 days 50 meters from the accommodation, to access with suitcases and the baby stroller the access is perfect. Thanks for the cleaning and towel changes, we had a mishap and they solved it instantly. On our trips to Pamplona you will be our first option (Original) Apartamento nuevo y muy bien ubicado en una zona tranquila pero cercana a los restaurantes y zonas de interés.

(Translated by Google) Magnificent decision to decide on the Linda Pamplona! The location, in the heart of the old town, is unbeatable. You can move around on foot without any problem through the most emblematic areas, such as the Town Hall Square, the route of the bulls, the Cathedral, the Plaza del Castillo... And the apartment, we found it very comfortable, with a decoration from which we could draw ideas for our own home, and all within a homely, warm environment where you feel it is a pleasure to be. I think nothing better can be said about an accommodation that you go to as a "tourist" that makes us feel like we are in our own home. Very comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms in perfect condition, immaculate cleanliness and the feeling that every last detail has been taken into account to make us feel at home, in the center of Pamplona. To repeat and recommend without a doubt!

(Translated by Google) A very well-located apartment in the center of Pamplona. It has a super spacious and really comfortable bed; the apartment is adequately sized and the decor is functional. But aside from this, there's little else that deserves a good review. The apartment smelled really bad. It only had two casement windows with opaque glass, but they only opened with a small opening at the top, so you couldn't even tell if you were facing the street or a courtyard; you couldn't see anything. Furthermore, those windows, with such a small opening, didn't allow for proper ventilation of the apartment. The smell of sewage was absolutely unbearable. I stayed there for 10 days; they didn't change the sheets even once, and I managed to get the towels changed after requesting them three times, and that was after 7 days of staying there. The apartment is paid for in advance, and they require an exorbitant €300 deposit, which I didn't know about until check-in. Contact with the apartment managers was limited to WhatsApp, which was inefficient, despite the friendly service provided by the person who assisted us; friendly, yes, but clearly impractical. If I return to Pamplona, I know where I won't stay again.

(Translated by Google) We will not repeat. Few good things to say. The reservation was made for two adults and a child and they did not leave us sheets or towels for the child, claiming that we had not reserved for three, when we wanted to complain because it was only via WhatsApp, they did not even do anything to us. Until the day we left, one of the windows did not close properly and you could hear a lot of noise as well as a lot of clarity because it did not have a blind. When we complained about this, they ignored us. We asked to come in before 4:00 pm and they told us no, but we had to come in a few hours later because the apartment was not ready. The service was very bad. (Original) No repetiremos.Pocas cosas buenas q decir.
