The 50 best cheap eats in Ninh Binh

Not quite sure how was the other giving good ratings for this place, but the experience for me was quite unpleasant. The food options is limited, took a very long time to serve, and came with the dish washing piece in our fried vegetable. They trying so hard to provide best service and I hope they will do better.

Okay this is the second restaurant I’ve been to in Ninh Binh and it’s just as amazing as the first one. What is it with Ninh Binh and insane portion sizes?? I love it. No need for dinner here - the portions will keep you fed until breakfast the next day! They don’t forfeit quality for quantity either, the food is just as delicious as all the restaurants I visited in Hanoi. The staff here seem particularly hospitable too - I was given a small platter for biscuits and a a banana while I waited for my meal. 5 stars all round.

Food was amazing ! We ordered 2 dishes now the taste was so good ! We felt very sorry that we couldn’t finish (the dishes come in very big portions!) and the owner offered to pack it up so we could take it out ㅠㅠ The fried beef with pineapple and the fried beef noodles : would recommend 100%

The owner was lovely and welcoming. The food was good, a healthy portion of Sweet and sour chicken and a lot of rice for a side of only 10.000VND. The chicken was tender. The spring rolls were good and freshly made but not particularly tasty. If you're a big eater or a group, you have the option to order a dish for 1/2/3/4 people. Beer was particularly cheap for restaurant prices.

The photos don’t do it justice but the portion was HUGE!! I had to ask for half of it to be put in a box for the next day. We received bananas and ‘fish treats’ while we were waiting. Nice flavours, decent price and lovely staff. There’s also 2 little dogs running around sometimes too.

Lovely little family restaurant. Not exactly fancy, but served up good solid food at very reasonable prices. The menu has 4 levels for most dishes - depending on whether you're ordering for 1, 2, 3, or 4 people. The pictured dishes are all from the "1" column (plus plain steamed rice, not pictured), and gave us comfortably two meals' worth. The pork with ginger was especially good - piles of hot fragrant ginger and lean tender pork. Staff were friendly, if a little confused - we arrived soaked through and set up for several hours, having beers and spring rolls while doing some holiday planning, then only ordering our mains a couple of hours later. I don't think they minded. Hopefully. Total bill for all the mentioned food, plus 5 beers and 2 large bottle of water, was 330,000₫. A Grab taxi back to train station was 26,000₫.

So we saw that a korean star was here and wanted to try the food. First day we wanted to order so many thing and they recommended us to calm the fbomb down which to be honest was the best choice. We had the small portion of each food we order and the portions were really big. We had the roasted chicken and ended up going back for it 2 days in a row to eat there and take the leftovers away and we had food for our whole ninh binh trip we tried many dishes and honestly all are worth going back for we had the sweet and sour chicken whis was also very good. Roasted chicken is the best in our opinion, we just grabbed the normal small steamed rice because mixing that with the sauces from the dishes is just the best option and big value pick. Family owned business soo hearth and soul goes into it, sometimes it may take a bit longer if it is very busy but it is well worth the wait. They also have a daughter that speaks English fluently and help to recommend food for us. My boyfriend is very picky eater from the netherlands and he says it's the best food he has had. And me personally, as someone who loves to do culinary adventures, totally head over heels for their food. Their Vietnamese coffee was also super good. We have only good things to say about the place (good price, amazing food) 💖 I would also recommend for you to try order a couple of menus in small portion and share it together (even their small portion is big!).

Fancied a change from Vietnamese food. Lovely place to eat, loads of seating inside and loads of booths and outside seating by a shallow pool. Wood fired pizzas looked great but we got tacos and a taco bowl, bowl was fresh, tacos slightly stale, but barely noticeable with the filling. Drinks were outstanding, loads of funky craft beers, I went for the hard lemonade. Staff were super friendly as well and helpful.

While this place is pricier than most in Ninh Binh or Vietnam in general, the ambience is worth it. We came with a big group of 11 people, and our drinks and food arrived way faster than I was expecting based on other reviews. The Falafel Salad wasn’t incredible, but it was nice. The starters were alright, but quite small in size. Draft Beer was good, drinks a bit weak. They allowed us to bring in a birthday cake even though they offer their own, so that was nice

Absolutely loved it! After being away from home for a few months with our two kids, it was so nice to find food that reminded us of home. The meals were tasty, the drinks were delicious, and the service was amazing. We loved sitting by the pool surrounded by tropical plants — such a relaxing vibe. The kids had a great time playing in the fantastic playground while we enjoyed our meals, which made it even better for families. We enjoyed it so much that we ended up having both lunch and dinner at Chookie’s today! The atmosphere is clean and fresh, and it’s great being able to see into the spotless kitchen. The restaurant has a really cool vibe with good music playing at just the right volume to allow you to have a conversation without having to raise your voice. The food is good too, I would recommend the spicy edamame as a starter and the Aussie Beef Burger or the Pulled Duck Sandwich as a main. The Burrito bowl was nice but the portion was a bit small, and the Local Bowl was mostly noodles, could have had less of that and more of the remaining ingredients. The desserts we found a little too sweet.

The food option variety was huge you could get burgers Mexican pizza… and every type of drink and dessert. The service communication was less than optimal but other than that this restaurants atmosphere next to the pool in the little booth was really nice and the taste of everythingwas incredible (especially the Mexican burger that was like a taco in a burger and the incredible lava cake!!).

This place is the 🐝 bee's knees. Western food at its best-est in the east. Cheesecaske, cinnamon rolls, chicken 🐔 fingers, pizza, burgers, nachos, and drum 🥁 roll bacon, eggs, toast and hash browns (with beans and 🍅 to cater to British folk). No tourist trap….FINALLY! We just wanted a decent dinner in a clean nice chill restaurant and stumbled upon a topic on Reddit about Tam Coc restaurants. Lots and lots of people agreed that Chookies was the place to be so we took the gamble and it paid off. Pizza: great. Spaghetti Bolognese: nice Wine: pretty decent Atmosphere and location: perfect. Plates were empty…..so stop scrolling and just go. 😉

Fun to eat at a place packed with locals. We were recommended by locals to try "crispy rice" ("cơm cháy") - it's like a kind of corn/mushroom soup that you dip pieces of fried rice (it's wasn't on the menu, but we asked for it by using Chatgpt) and it was delicious. Unique and very delicious. We also ordered the grilled chicken with honey. Squeeze the lime on and dip the pieces in the salt/seasoning mix they bring with it - the locals know what they are doing! It's delicious and elevates everything!

Waited over 1 hour to get 4 dishes when the restaurant wasn't even busy. The crab soup is just tomato soup. The goat meat is very hard to eat. A cockroach landed on my wife's back! And we saw a mouse running around!

I had an amazing experience at Family Restaurant. Their duck is by far the juiciest and most affordable I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. As a true duck lover, I’ve been searching across countries for the best duck dish, and my search is finally over. The flavor, tenderness, and value here are unmatched. I was intrigued by the ducks that they roasted at the front of the restaurant and decided to check it out. The staff told me that the portion was not excessive for 1 person. I think the ducks were roasted at a final stage with herbs. It definitely does not taste like Cantonese roast duck. The meat was tender. However, there were many bony pieces. The Hanoi beer here is cheap, 25k VND per bottle. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Nice local food, cooked fast and its busy so everything is fresh. Good prices, meal for four with drinks was $33 nzd. Only downside was that both times we ate the forgot meals and drinks, wasn't a translation issue, also it got quite smokey and was hard to get the staffs attention and they dont check back. We got too try some duck after eating here lovely service. And also great for letting us try some off the menu food. Great food, great service! We tried many restaurants in the city but we were not satisfied. After a bit of research we found this gem which is a bit further out. We had the sesame pork and the stir fried duck and it was delicious!! The lady servicing us was great and we could smell the chef firing up the stove and freshly preparing the food for us. Getting away from the tourist traps and going here was the best decision. Don’t be discouraged that it is a bit further away from the main street and therefore a bit empty. I promise you’ll have a great meal!!

Best food spot we tried in Ninh binh. The lady here was super lovely with amazing hospitality, spoke great english and Spanish, even gave us a bunch of bananas for free as we left. Gave good recommendations on the dishes which all lived up to the hype. The bun bo hue was tasty, and the stir fried goat with the lemongrass and Chili was sooo delicious!

Place is hidden down an alley off the main road buts it’s worth the walk. Food is freshly cooked and delicious with lots of options to choose from. The owner is super sweet and speaks very good english. I think I came here almost everyday for a meal.

Tried their burger combo for 250 k which included 2 beef burgers with bacon and a fried egg, fries and 2 beers. As well as the vegetable spring rolls that came with a tangy fish sauce. The food was amazing! The place is comfy and the family running it are super welcoming and provide great service! Even gave us free waters for the road.

Surrounded by endless greenery, trails, bicycle rentals, a swimming pool, electric ca rides around the property, and more, it offered a peaceful retreat. Beautiful scenery and boat rides. 150,000VND for a ticket, including 2 boat rides (1 for visiting But cave and 1 for the boat ride to see the birds). You can walk (about 3km in total i guess), or buy electric shuttle ticket (40,000VND), ride your own bike (additional fee but idk the fee). There are many other stops where you can take good scenery photos. The birds will fly back to their nesting place around 4:30pm 5:00pm so it’s best to ride the boat at this time. 1 boat can carry 10 people so you have to wait until there are enough people on your waiting queue. I visit at weekend so it’s a bit crowded.

Thung Nham is such a chill spot, fresh air, stunning views, and a super peaceful vibe. Loved the boat ride to see the birds and the caves, plus the local food was surprisingly tasty. Definitely a place I’d go back to and brag with the photos later!

I originally came for the birds, and that section was underwhelming since it’s only a small part of the park, but the sheer number of other photo spots more than made up for it.

Fantastic restaurant! I got a recommendation from my hostel to eat here as it is a special goat restaurant. I read a review claiming that the English menu prices were higher... This is not true. I grabbed both menus, used Google translate and it's the same. I paid 200K for the stir fried goat and 50K for fried rice. 250K total. The staff doesn't speak English, but they are very attentive and ready to use Google translate if needed. Portions were quite generous and the food was very tasty. Highly recommended!

We were so disappointed at the dish "De op chao" that was recommended by the staff as best seller. The De meat was extremely chewy like rubber. We followed Google Maps to find this restaurant, expecting to have the best dish in town. Dissatisfied! We would not recommend to travellers.

We ordered Bun bo nam bo and Fried rice with beef. First one was ok (average) but fried rice was not good at all. It was tasteless and looked like a frozen semi-finished product that has just been stir fried for a moment and had nothing to do with vietnamese fried rice! What a find on our last night in Tam Coc! Best Vietnamese food we have had so far. Seated quickly and order taken with some help from the server (who was very friendly). We sat outside which was lovely. Had the Vietnamese style chicken curry, the stir fried beef and spring rolls! Fresh tasty food!

Spent here couple of evenings. We tried the following: Caramelised pork - simply great. Vietnamese pancakes with beef - a little dry, but otherwise pretty good. Fish in a clay pot - wonderful Fried rice with beef, pineapple and cheese - homely, good food. Spring rolls were large and with good filling and coconut coffee was very tasty. Service was quite kind and helpful as well. A highlight for us was the ginger tea. Thank you very much.

Very disappointing meal - we only came because we wanted to try com chay but the soup tasted as if it came from a packet. Eggplant special was ok but only just. Banana smoothie was tasteless - overripe bananas? Mango salad was very bland. They obviously reply on tourists being brought but their guides - my advice: demand to go elsewhere!

We found that food choices are not as great in Tam Coc as other places we visited and they are mostly heavy on meat. We decided to give this place a try and were surprised that we liked most of the food here. It gave us a chance to cleanse our palette from all the eating in Vietnam. We ordered the set menu so not all the dishes we liked but good enough for us to consider going back the next day. Definitely go for the stir fry veggies and braised mushrooms.

I ordered the Vegan Poke Bowl and it was delicious! The teriyaki sauce was a bit on the sweet side, but I loved that they served it on the side so I could use just the right amount. The restaurant is simple, clean, and welcoming, with plenty of yummy vegan options to choose from. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for fresh plant-based food in Ninh Binh.

Some of the best food we have had in Vietnam. The tempeh with peanut and ginger sauce was amazing we also had the ginger and coconut tofu and it was delicious. We ordered a fried spring rolls with vegetables (35k), a chicken pho (40k) and a fried chicken with honey and rice (90k). The spring rolls were served first, around 10-15 minutes after we placed our order. The dish was well done. Crispy skin, tasty filling and not too oily. Our mains came around 10 minutes later. I was surprised by the fried chicken with honey and rice. The serving was large, with 3 slabs of chicken breast. The taste however, was average at most. The chicken were mildly seasoned before it was pan fried, and then coated with honey. The breasts were not sliced/cut, and it becomes tiring/hard when we started to eat the thicker parts of the meat. The sauce resembles a mixture of honey and oil, and it is neither sweet nor savoury. Perhaps my expectation of the food was too high after the spring rolls. I have some reservations about recommending this restaurant. But I think it is still worth visiting as there are other dishes that may be good.

This restaurant is by far the best one we have been. The staff is really nice, the food is delicious and not even expensive. This restaurant is a hidden gem near the Trang An sampan cruises. Vegetable & mushroom soup with special local sun-baked rice crackers was so good. We ordered 2 pizzas and the base was definitely not made in the oven, they were probably unfrozen before. The taste was none, there were just no flavors. Maybe it’s because I come from a Mediterranean country and I am used to more flavors in this food, otherwise i don’t know how these places get so high reviews really. We also ordered a burguer that it was quite good actually, although the burguer bread was not really bread, but the one they use here. Service was really nice and the drinks were very tasty.

Nice place, quieter than some of the other more garish restaurants opposite with a more relaxed ambience. Service was friendly, a little slow but to be expected when they prepare everything fresh. It was cheaper than others too. 120k for roasted goat compared to 200k+ on opposite side of road. Goat was delicious, well cooked and not too chewy. Being picky, I would usually prefer mine a little more rare, but was succulent and juicy with good flavour so delicious regardless! The ginger chicken was also good, though the ginger flavour is different from the Chinese style expected. The tofu stuffed with meat was ok, but couldn't match the other dishes in terms of memorable flavour. Overall this was well worth the very reasonable price.

The restaurant was understaffed when we went, with the same person preparing and serving the food. He was extremely warm & offered us free tea, snacks, bananas before the meal. Highly recommend this place.

We were warmly greeted by the owner, and from the moment we stepped in, you could feel the genuine warmth and joy from the whole family. It’s a small, family-run busines. The husband does the cooking, the wife serves the food, and their two sweet kids help out. You can tell they put a lot of love into what they do. The ingredients were fresh, sourced from nearby stalls, and the food was honestly delicious. Highly recommend trying the deep-fried squid, sizzling goat, and the deep-fried crab with betel leaf. Communication was a fun mix of pointing, Google Translate, and smiles—the owner was really friendly and even spoke a little Mandarin. What really touched us was seeing the family quietly sharing a meal after we left, eating the same dishes we had, minus the meat or pricier ingredients. I ate at Banh Mi Hanoi Restaurant in Ninh Binh and ordered the tropical smoothie bowl and a vegan banh mi. Both were excellent and the smoothie was one of the best I have ever had. The service was amazing and it is clearly a warm, family-run restaurant. They even gave all their customers a free rain jacket because of the rain which was such a thoughtful gesture. I went back again and ordered the vegan noodle bowl and the portion was huge, I couldn’t even finish it. A wonderful spot with great food and kind people. Definitely going back for more.

Really cool place to relax in a quiet site street. We’ve spend the whole day there from 12pm till 8pm as we had to wait for the night bus. They also stored our luggage so we could walk around the town. The food is cheap and really good. Highly recommend this place :) Thanks guys

We ordered the spring rolls (which you roll yourself) with peanut sauce (!!! I’ve been on the hunt for this since we got here and this was the first time we found it!), a peanut butter tofu banh mi to split, and a vegan pho and pineapple fried rice. All of the dishes were so flavorful, fresh, and generous in portion size (we ordered way too much food — oops). The banh mi was crispy, the pho far from bland, and the atmosphere was cute and inviting. Servers were super sweet and credit cards are accepted! Prices are good and I would def come back!

Saffron Indian Restaurant in Tam Coc can be quite hit or miss. When they actually have food available, it’s really good However, the biggest issue is consistency. The restaurant often opens and closes at random times, and many dishes on the menu are frequently unavailable. The hours listed on Google Maps don’t seem to match when the place is actually open, which makes it frustrating for anyone trying to plan a visit. After several attempts to eat here, it’s hard to recommend unless you happen to catch them on a good day. Don't walk there thinking you can actually eat .

One of Ninh Binh's Specialty dishes : Eel Vermicelli. If you love eel, or adventurous enough to try if you haven't. They serve either Mien Luon (eel in vermicelli noodles soup), stir fry to go with rice or porridge. I had the Mien Luon for 35 k which is very value for money for eel. When I arrive, the eatery was full and mostly locals. Highly recommended!

Just staying 3 doors up it was just to convenient. The owners were so lovely to welcome me and tell me their story. Such great conversations over a nice Bia Hanoi after a big days ride. They were so generous with free fruit, preshrunk roasted peanuts & chips. I ordered beef wrapped in vine leaves which were so fresh and tasty and an ideal food to go with a beer. I felt like wine before l ordered more dishes so the owner took me for a walk up the road where l brought 2 x bottles of red wine. We returned to share a bottle. I was at this restaurant for 3hrs and had a great time, with excellent food, company and even got the chance to get some work done. I will be back for the famous Egg Coffee and breakfast before l ride to Hanoi. Thanks again for such great hospitality.

Mediocre food, bland, unsavory. Unsanitary kitchen and toilet. This place was recommended by our taxi driver as a place to try goat meat. Lesson learnt to avoid listening to taxi drivers recommendations and go by Google maps reviews.

I stayed in Green peace bungalow so i can get 15% discount here. The first day, i try to find where it is but fail The second day, too The last day, Julia took us by becycle to this restaurant. :D I learned that it is very famous with BBQ chicken and Goat! I tried and was truly delicious. Strongly recommend to everyone.

This is a perfect restaurant I have had before, i’m a vegetarian and it quite difficult to find the food but finally I got to this restaurant with no idiea. I was so happy for my food, the chef cooked a lot of things for me that the first time I eat. They were special food and so delicious. I will strongly recommend you to my friends. Thanks chef so much!

Food was very unpleasant. My vegetarian noodles stir fry was so bland and just completely drenched in so much oil I could only eat a couple bites. Spring rolls tasteless and oily. Beef pho more of a beef stew broth. Server was friendly.

Staff was super-friendly and our food was also really good. Got the recommendation from two Germans which were sitting in the restaurant when we passed by having a look at the menu. So I thought to pass it on.

This is not a bad spot to get a meal, it's very popular for tour guides to take their clientele, so much so we were asked where our guide was. But that was probably the most care we had from the staff, needed a little effort to order and had the non bothered sort of air to the place, you know the one, where you put up with the rather rude shop owners because the food is real tasty and cheap. Unfortunately the food here was pretty average. Went with a selection of dishes to eat banquet style, admittedly not the local delicacies of goat or duck, but just the home cooked style eggplant, tofu tomato, morning glory garlic, curry/cary and banana blossom salad. We would have loved something more in the banana blossom salad, because the blossom itself is quite a dry, chalky sort of texture - this is usually a favourite but I've never had this salad so bland. As for the cary, I could taste the curry powder, but not in a good way - sort of just stirred in and not given much love to reduce down a bit, no flavours of ginger or lemongrass or anything and leaving me longing for a sprig of at least Vietnamese mint through it. They did however bring out everything with super speed.

I went for lunch and ordered a set menu, which was the best choice in my opinion. They accommodated a couple of changes I asked in the dishes. In general, the food was very good and tasty. Eggplants were delicious, as well as the papaya salad and spring rolls. The staff is ok, but they don’t speak English and weren’t the friendliest people. I was with my tour guide and he asked for the changes.

The foods are slightly above average but the portion is big. I would like to highlight one point which I feel there's a discrimination behaviour. The server don't serve us drinks and I have to keep him to serve the soft drinks and beer. But when the westerner are here, they can prepare all types of beverage and serve them. Double standard, cos the owner is a French guy.

Very nice restaurant, fast service, some western dishes, relatively high prices

Delicious variety of local foods served here. My favourite goes to the lamb wrap (which you make yourself using the ingredients provided). Service was very efficient, with dishes coming out within the first ten minutes of sitting down. Staff were friendly and receptive, and also capable of speaking in Mandarin. This place seems to be popular with local tours and rightfully so. Taking a look at some of the adverse reviews, it seems as though if you're not part of a tour of some sort, you might have a different experience? (I unfortunately cannot comment)

As good food as other restaurants. Quick food.

This restaurant we visited with our tour guide . Large restaurant is quite noisy but the food was good and they did serve us quickly.
