Cafe
Tea house
Cafe Gorge is a modern tea room located in Cheddar, Somerset, offering a cozy atmosphere and the best local produce. The cafe is known for its delicious cheddar scones and warm cheddar potato onion pie. It's also praised for its scrumptious toasties and a variety of hot and cold food options at competitive prices. Additionally, it provides a wide selection of hot drinks perfect after a long walk along the scenic Strawberry Line.
Lovely selection of food, staff were extremely friendly and service was quick. It was busy the 3 times I attended at various times across the weekend. Coffee was very nice (barista made) and cookies equally so. A wide selection of cakes and pastries as well as a menu of food choices such as breakfast sandwiches, cream teas, baked potatoes and toasties. Option to take away food was nice for when no seat could be found although patrons quickly moved on noting how busy it was and people waiting. Indoor and outdoor seating access from the cafe. Outdoor overlooked the road and small river running right in front Great access to the gorge from the site being just up from the caves and Jacob’s ladder.

After a trip through the caves we decided to stop off for a scone. Upon entering we were greeted by a wall of celebrity pictures. Adam richman(ManVsFood) the toasty was absolutely stunning and is probably the nicest one I’ve ever eaten accompanied by homemade coleslaw which again was heavenly. Couldn’t not have a scone too. Staff unbelievably polite. 10/10 recommend
JOSeph P — Google review
Lovely small cafe. Ordered two teas and two plain scones, only to realise they were charging us more for not taking the cream scone offer . So, I changed to two cream scones and tea with no cream and got the offer price. Perfect sense 🤷 Nice scones
S P — Google review
Wife's toasty was good. My ploughman's however was culinary anarchy! I've never been served a whole celery stick, whole spring onion and half an apple before... and leaving the sticker on was the piece de resistance! A little more effort in preparation needed methinks!
Jake M — Google review
Cafe Gorge is a perfect little pause before the adventure begins. It opens earlier than the museum, so you can start the day here with something fresh and tasty, enjoying a quiet moment before the crowds arrive. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it easy to relax and gather energy before exploring the gorge and caves.
Kseniia F — Google review
We visited for lunch after the cafe caught our eye a few weeks prior whilst in the area. It was so nice we visited 2 more times over our weekend. The quiche and salad was delicious, especially the coleslaw which was so delicious I asked the waitress what was in it. When we visited the second day, the waitress recognised us and commented on us visiting again, which I thought was a nice touch. Food delicious. Service amazing. Atmosphere friendly.

Wow, that was the best cheese twirl I have ever had. Nice little coffee shop perfect for 2. Seat over look the river and close to the cave

Nestled by the Cheddar Yeo river, Edelweiss Cafe is a charming spot with a German-inspired exterior and a cozy interior featuring wooden beamed ceilings. The cafe offers well-priced roasts including turkey, chicken, or veg that are perfect after a morning of hiking. With its friendly staff and delicious food such as soup, afternoon tea, and scones, it's no wonder this cafe is highly recommended by visitors to Cheddar.
Perfect cafe well cooked food, I had ham and cheddar and pickle sandwich, ham was excellent. My partner had breakfast, loads of food, not a small snack like a meal, mushrooms cooked lovely and all very hot. Gluten free option available.
Anna E — Google review
Lovely little cafe tuck away just off the small river crossing bridge, into Cheddar Gorge. Food made fresh and with care for you, not just ‘dropped on a plate’. Would definitely return!
Nick P — Google review
This small cafe really surprised me, food was fantastic and waitress was friendly. Jacket potato looked a bit different than usually, but it was delicious and what a astonishing vegetable soup. Must try! Ham in a sandwich was flavorful, perfect I might say!
Nerijus M — Google review
We came here for breakfast on a Sunday morning. The café had a good atmosphere and seating indoor and outdoors (for outdoor seating you have to order inside) we had coffee and both had a bacon, egg and sausage sandwiches. These were really tasty and had a good amount of filling, shame that one of the bread slices was the heel of the loaf causing the filling to squish out quite a bit. But nevertheless, portions size was good and tasty ingredients, so a minor blemish upon an overall good experience here.
Imogen B — Google review
Have breakfast here yesterday, full English and it was absolutely fantastic. Service was excellent, and at less than £11 I think was good value
Greg L — Google review
Stopped here for lunch today with my son. Loved it, and would definitely recommend it to others. My son had sausage and chips and I had a sandwich. The food is all freshly cooked/ made and was very generous and tasty. Got to say I was surprised with my sandwich, with some lovely chunky coleslaw and really packed with the coronation chicken and fresh salad. I looked at the food arriving for others and it all looked very tasty, would love to try some of the rest of the menu. Service was friendly and professional and the price was a surprise, so very reasonable.

We had X2 bacon sandwichs and a flat white and mocha. We sat outside next the river which was lovely. If you want a loaded bacon sandwich this is the place to come!! Food and coffee were both delicious 😋🤤

The staff at The Mousehole café provided a warm and friendly welcome, and the menu offered a variety of excellent choices that left everyone satisfied. The café prided itself on using delicious local ingredients, resulting in a great breakfast experience. Notably, their cream tea with warm scones was absolutely delightful, prompting some customers to return solely for this treat. Unlike many places in Cheddar, this café offered reasonable prices without compromising quality.
We stopped by The Mousehole Cafe and Restaurant for lunch and were pleasantly surprised. The setting is charming, with a relaxed coastal vibe that matches the beauty of the village. We ordered a mix of light and comfort food—fresh salad, creamy cheese, crispy fries, hearty sandwiches, and drinks. The sandwiches were well-filled and satisfying, served warm with fresh ingredients. The fries were golden and crisp, not greasy. The side salad was fresh and nicely dressed, adding balance to the meal. The coffee was strong and aromatic, perfect for a post-meal pick-me-up. The vanilla milkshake was thick, smooth, and full of flavor—one of the best we’ve had in a while. Service was quick and friendly, and the staff made sure we were comfortable throughout. It’s clear they care about quality and presentation, which comes through in the food and the atmosphere. Shared a few photos so others can get a feel for the place—definitely recommend if you’re in the area. Great spot for a casual lunch or a coffee break.

Popped into cheddar and stopped here for an afternoon treat. Nice quiet spot with cosy vibe, very relaxing and warm welcome. Nice big menu with plenty from afternoon teas, lunch, warm meals, and sweet treats. Ordered scones and latte, perfect scones I would say, nice and warm, creamy clotted cream and fresh citrusy strawberry jam! Really enjoyed this spot and the price is good considering the area and foot traffic these places get. The quality of produce and service is deffo here at the mousehole. Would rate this a 8/10.
Jake P — Google review
Nice location for the cafe but sadly was very disappointed. Upon arriving, we were appointed to a table by staff. I ordered a hot milk chocolate for £3.60 and my partner ordered a ultimate chocolate milkshake which was £6.00, wait times were quick but there was nothing special about either drinks as the menu promises the milkshake to be filled with chocolate, sweets and cream etc, didn’t come with any chocolate and cheap dolly mix sweets as shown in photo. The hot chocolate wasn’t very hot, about luke warm at most and the milkshake was below average. Definitely don’t recommend this place for a milkshake or hot chocolate. The toilets were clean and the staff were helpful and friendly.
Elfj03 — Google review
This place is a gem hard to find somewhere that serves a decent ploughman’s nicely presented ham cheese salad egg and pork pie together with warm bread. If weather is nice space out the back outside and seating inside. Cream teas that were being served also looked good Staff polite and helpful Food reasonably priced and freshly cooked
Malcolm E — Google review
This is a nice place to look at. I rapidly the interior to be calm and relaxing. The only issue I had was the poor service. It was so very, very slow, to the point that we nearly walked out. One of the team members glanced my way on 5 occasions but looked away rapidly to avoid having to work. At one stage, 4 staff members were in the kitchen just chatting. One was texting on her phone. A total lack of interest frotm them. The coffee, however, was very good. It does disappoint when you get poor service. This place could be an absolute gold mine if someone could control the team.

Would definitely recommend getting the cheese platter and the salad with cheese! Delicious! The waitress that helped us was very sweet!

We go to Cheddar Gorge every year (sometimes twice a year) and our first port of call is The Mousehole cafe! The quality of the food is fantastic and a real decent portion too. The staff are always happy, bubbly and positive and ready to help and I would highly recommend a trip to this cafe! I cannot wait to return!

The sandwich was on the pricey side. However, it was delicious. They offer authentic Cornish pastries, which my friend had and was impressed. The vibe is cozy and warm. Lots of cheesy options are available, being located in the high street area of Cheddar.

Visiting Cheddar I can thoroughly recommend a visit to this lovely Cafe and shop. Painted a bright yellow in colour you can't miss it. Very friendly staff and welcoming. Food is delicious fresh and made to order. A lovely pot of tea here with Cornish Pasty and Toasted Tea cake will set you up for walking in the area and seeing all the breathtaking lovely sights that Cheddar Gorge will offer you. The Goats on the Gorge are lovely to see and we saw many on our days visit there.

Love the quirky interior of this traditional cafe, well worth five stars on its own. As for the bacon baps they truly hit the spot, same with the sausage and bacon option. The coffee is served piping hot while not being overly strong. While the staff were very friendly and welcoming, making us feel appreciated as customers. We will certainly be returning to this cafe next time we are in Cheddar. (5/3/22).

one of the most favorite cafes where you can enjoy cream tea. The staff is very nice. ❤️ The only thing I don't understand is their work schedule. Because they are closed for more time than open, and I specifically go to them, and then fault.

Rockface cafe is characterized by its welcoming staff and pristine cleanliness. However, some patrons were disappointed to find that their pastie had been microwaved, resulting in a soggy texture. Additionally, they felt that the filling was lacking in quantity. Nonetheless, this hidden gem was stumbled upon by hikers who had ventured up Cheddar Gorge. They both indulged in scones with cream and jam accompanied by hot chocolates topped with whipped cream.
The best place in Cheddar Gorge! Just steps away from the main road and gorge walk, it’s the perfect place to stop for ice cream, lunch or a cold drink! They even welcomed our dog and brought her a water dish after our walk. Would highly recommend!!!

Stopped by after hiking up Cheddar Gorge and our path ended up leading us to this little gem. We both ordered a scone with cream & jam, alongside a hot chocolate with whipped cream. Sad to say that the hot chocolate and whipped cream was 50/50 but it was still relatively nice. The scone was nice and warm which was really tasty. Plenty of guests stopped by with dogs, with the staff handing out dog bowls to help them hydrate. Lovely scenery and a sweet bite, I’ll be stopping by here again next time visit.

This shop is no longer a cafe; it now sells rocks and ornaments for home and garden. While the shop itself is lovely and the products are appealing, the owner's poor customer service was a significant deterrent, making me unwilling to purchase anything from such a grumpy old man. Perhaps he should focus on creating his products and hire someone else to handle sales or just shut up shop completely because his customer service will only lead to losing money and opportunities.
David S — Google review
Amazing service from Joanna and her team at Rockface cafe. Serving 100+ hungry and thirsty cyclists before they struggle up Cheddar Gorge on a Saturday morning is no easy task, but the service was slick, and the coffee and cakes were fantastic. They even opened early to accommodate us. Loads of outdoor space and a great location. We'll be back very soon.
Marc P — Google review
Fantastic gift shop - no longer a cafe I believe! The store owner was incredibly friendly and there's s wonderful selection of garden/outside decorations like statues, and decorative stakes that react with natural UV light so the edges glow slightly at dusk. Inside, there are lots of trinkets and carefully curated items from all around the globe, like green tea containers from Japan, decorative bowls, Japanese cups and saucers, colourful hangings, novelty (but functional) coat pegs ('goat' pegs, as well as sheep ones too!), a wonderful selection of precious stones, jugs (fish 'glug' jugs), and so much more! Something for everything, with a wonderful manager. Lovely shop!
Ellen — Google review
Went for lunch on a Saturday. Had a good feeling about it as it looked pretty busy. Both ordered a simple baguette with fillings and was told it might be a 30 minute wait. No problem! Had a drink and was willing to take a rest after a long walk. 40 minutes later still not baguette. Staff seemed pretty clueless about what they're meant to be doing. Maybe the lad in the cap could mumble less... After asking about our food we were told we only ordered the 1 baguette and 2 cokes. My SO asked for ham and cheese but was told they had no ham, she then opted for the same as me (chorizo and pepperoni). Apparently the cashier was thinking of other things and just left the 1 order on there. Might visit again if we can be proven the place runs smoothly. If pizza is cooking then maybe do the simple bits in between? 50 minutes for a baguette was a tad steep.

Lillypool Accommodation & Café is a popular breakfast spot that draws in crowds, especially on weekends. While you might have to wait for a table due to its popularity, the food is well worth it. Diners rave about the delicious offerings, although some feel that certain items could be improved or are priced a bit high. The café boasts friendly staff who contribute to a lively atmosphere, making it an enjoyable place to start your day.
Saw this on Google as its near to our holiday park, glad we went, fantastic food and staff, really helpful and friendly. Highly recommend it.

I was quite disappointed coming here. I looked at the good reviews beforehand and thought as it was a 'farm shop' the food would be fresh and high quality. We ordered a full English and an English muffin. I asked for 2 lattes however there must've been confusion as we received 2 instant coffees with a tiny bit of milk. The muffin was burnt. The English breakfast didn't seem very fresh. The workers seemed like they didn't want you to be there. Would not recommend.
TOM B — Google review
I feel I have to be honest as this accomodation cut out trip short due to the quality of the beds. After a 5hr drive to get there I was looking forward to a good night's sleep but the springs in the bed dug into my hips. My daughter was on a pull out sofa bed which was not much better. The rooms were clean but the photo online shows a farm tucked away in roling hills what they don't show you is that it's actually on a busy road that is hidden in the photo by a long hedge. Instead of listening to animals we were listening to traffic. The cafe onsite was very basic a laminated poster about allergies or intolerances but did not have any non dairy milk for my coffee. The food was basic and very greasy. We cut out stay short as we couldn't face another night in those beds and with the bright light shining above our door so the room couldn't be dark in the night. The mobile phone number on the sign is the old owner so when we got there we could gain access and no one was answering the landline number. No signal onsite so had to drive to a neaby town to check emails for key safe code. Very poor internet access onsite with supplied internet by lilypool farm.

Left without ordering anything, we walked in at 12.45, Google states open until 14.00. I asked the lady at the hatch if they were still serving food, her reply "yes, unfortunately " with a huge roll of her eyes. Won't be returning. Do not recommend.

The go-to place for breakfast; definitely the best in the area. The staff are very friendly and enjoy having a laugh, creating a great atmosphere.

Went for breakfast on a Saturday morning. The place was full, so we had to wait a bit for a table. Our food arrived about 20-30 minutes after we ordered. The food was great, though it's a shame the large breakfast doesn't come with tomatoes or mushrooms. The loaded breakfast was pretty overpriced. The coffee was just instant coffee with hot water. It's a good spot for a quick breakfast, but not really a place to hang out for long.

Whether you're craving a hearty breakfast or some delectable cakes and pastries, this quaint cafe is sure to hit the spot.
Absolutely delicious feast and despite it being lunchtime on a sunny weekend day, and only 10 mins from the packed tourist traps at the bottom of the Gorge, it wasn’t too busy at all. Absolutely hidden gem! Very friendly and helpful staff. Super tasty home-baked treats. The salads were all varied and really flavoursome.

I tried have tried the poached egg and avocado smash previously and it was so vinegary that it was inedible. I put this down to the vinegar probably used in the poaching water being too excessive and a mistake, however I tried it again today and it was once again so so vinegary. It was all I could taste and all soaked into the sourdough toast. My daughter was so excited to have pancakes but they had run out of them, which happens and she went for the waffle instead which was fine. Hot drinks were good though, and the service was good and quick. The venue is incredibly chilly so I'd advise to wrap up warm if you plan on visiting.

One of the worst breakfasts ive had in a longtime. The bacon was the consistency of pork scratching. Asked for some less well done had some microwaved bacon brought over. Sausages were horrible, mushrooms very oily. People working in there didn’t seem to care.
Julian H — Google review
Was looking forward to coming here for breakfast after a recommendation. However the whole experience was disappointing to say the least . Ordered smoked salmon with cream cheese on toasted sourdough, arrived as a bit of white (not toasted) baguette. Queried why it wasn’t sourdough, the server wasn’t sure and had to check , came back with ‘we ran out’. Not sure why we couldn’t have been told this at point of ordering (as wouldn’t have ordered it), plus was charged the same price. Friend ordered veggie breakfast, had nearly finished it and toast not arrived, was told it is on its way then had to ask for a second time when it didn’t arrive. The small breakfast arrived as three small items on a plate. The beans and toast did not arrive until chased up. All in all a really poor show / seemed rather disorganised . Will not be returning!

That was the most disgusting frittata that I had in my life... I actually had to almost finish it as well because I was hungry and there wasn't a lot of healthy food around to pick from. It had these big moisty disgusting pieces of sweet potato, and it tasted like rubber... I have no idea what recipe they were following, or if they wanted revenge on humanity when they cooked that, but there was no flavor balance there. I could have gotten the vegan pastry, but the lady who was serving said she had no idea what was in it. Seriously, get your act together...

We visited on a quiet day, so we didn’t have to wait too long but the lad serving us either didn’t know what he was doing or just didn’t want to be there! Nice enough but just no enthusiasm at all! The lad who brought the food out was nicer though! The food itself is very basic bog standard cafe grub but more than edible! Good prices considering the location! There is a very friendly robin that hangs around the garden seating, so keep an eye out!

We ate here for lunch and the food was decent and seating was lush. Would recommend here for a care lunch with lots of verity of food.

Drove from South Wales to visit the caves for the day. We started our day with a full breakfast here. It was exactly what we were looking for. Food was freshly cooked & served hot, bacon was thick and tasty. It's a simple cafe, with no fuss. Plenty of tables inside & outside. Which were kept clean by the hard working friendly lady who didn't stop. Lucky find for us.

We had a cooked breakfast this morning. What a perfect breakfast it was. Service and food was lovely! Such a lovely little cafe in a gorgeous location. Will definitely be back 😁

“The person who served me (a gray-haired man) was rude, cocky, and not attentive at all. Overall, a very unpleasant experience — someone with that attitude should not be working with customers.”

Visited here last weekend my husband & I had a full English breakfast...it was delicious well worth £7.90 we sat in the outside seating area which was idyllic perfect setting would 100% visit again!

Nice pot of tea. I had ham egg chips and beans. Lovely ham however this was letdown by cold chips lukewarm beans and a hard egg. V disappointing on a quiet Monday.

Set towards the bottom of Cheddar Gorge, The Cheese Cottage is worth a stop at. The lady behind the counter was lovely and helpful. We had a nice selection of cakes served on beautiful tableware. Dog friendly. Attached to the tea room is an area selling local produce. Would visit again.

We chose to sit outside in the calming cheddar rain just underneath some shelter outside of the cheese cottage. To the waiters shock that we were sitting in the rain excited to taste the toasty , we were offered a table inside with our dogs but insisted on staying outside for the full cheddar gorge toasty experience. 😀

After a walk up and down Jacob's Ladder we came here for a delicious lunch. It was £12 for a sandwich, scone, crops and a hot drink which was exactly what I was looking for. The sandwich had cheddar in it and the scone was fresh and still warm so I was very happy. The staff were also friendly and we had a nice seat by the window which suited our two young kids perfectly. I would recommend this as a reward after a walk around the gorge.

We loved The Cheese Cottage! Run by Coral (who bakes the most amazing scones!) and her family, it’s the perfect tea room. We so enjoyed our ‘elevenses’ that we skipped lunch anywhere else and returned for the most scrumptious high tea. All beautifully presented on classic blue and white china, and at prices that are more than fair! Thank you Cheese Cottage, we’ll be back!

Visit here twice a year or so whilst away, got too say this place is amazing! Staff are always very polite and helpful with a smile, amazing hot food and drinks. (Best hot chocolate i have ever had). I would recommend this place to everybody! 🙂

Waiter was rude and seemed like he’d rather be anywhere else than serve us. Didn’t talk to us at all. Asked if they were serving food and was met with a ‘are you serious look’ and no real answer. So I ordered two toasties. He finally spoke and muttered ‘drinks?’ I said 2 teas and a coke and he said ‘hang on. Ham and cheese- white or brown?’. Finally got through taking our order and told us to take a seat (1 of only 6 tables) and it would be bought over to us. He then stood at the till texting for 10 minutes before serving another guy who also ordered tea- this obviously reminded him of our order because half way through making his tea, he started making ours. Bought it over without a word and dumped it on the table (with only 1 plate for 2 mugs) Not to mention we had to clear our own table because there was a tray of cups on it from the previous customers. There are only 6 tables inside and all are visible by the 2 staff stood chatting behind the till. Had to hand it to them to which I was met with no ‘thank you’ or ‘sorry’ just an eye roll and he wandered off with it. When the food came, one toastie was really nice with a lot of filling; the other (ham and cheese) looked very sad with a few grey pieces of ham inside. The ham was so grey I thought they got it wrong and put beef in there instead. Toasties were served with a very small salad and a few salted tortillas. No real menu in sight, just a load of small chalk boards cluttering the till space. Young girl serving seemed nice and smiled at everyone but the other guy hardly spoke, looked like he didn’t want to be there and the only time he smiled was when he sat at the table behind us and was texting. No one checked in on us while eating. And we left immediately after finishing our meal. Guy watched us go so we said ‘thank you’ to which he didn’t respond and just went back to standing behind the till. After being recommended this place from a local cake store, we expected more. Won’t be coming back. Put a dampener on the rest of our visit for sure.

Independently owned and family operated treasure in Cheddar Gorge, very close to Jacob's Ladder. Lovely fresh bread and great quality cheeses. Stop by, treat yourselves and support locally owned independent family businesses (so important).

Food was nice, waiter was rude and acted like it was an inconvenience when just reminding him we ordered a coffee also. I noticed there have been a few other reviews saying about the rudeness aswell, so obviously not the first time.

Cream tea was great! Had a lovely warm scone (which I'd eaten before I could take a picture)! Would definitely come here again!

Families will appreciate the diverse menu options, from breakfast baguettes to mouthwatering burgers, all crafted with fresh ingredients.
What a bloody lovely little find. Friendly and quick service with really good prices. Usually this comes at a sacrifice in food quality, but the food was so good. All the fry up ingredients were fresh and good portions, the burgers were beyond good. Love the rustic industrial setting and the owners have some pretty decent music taste too.

A hidden gem with great food. Smashed burgers were really tasty and fresh.

Great Thai food. Really recommend trying it. We had the red curry and the green curry. With an omelette instead of the rice or chips. Very nice

The atmosphere and the pair running it it was a pleasure to be one of the 1st to experience cheddar bites the art that was in there was amazing our family really enjoyed it. The breakfast baguette was thoroughly enjoyed by my daughter and the man who owned cheddar bites was surprised to see that she had finished it because he said grown men struggled to finish that baguette. Lovely place.

Went for an Egg and Bacon sandwich and had a great experience. The man on the till was very friendly and the sandwich itself was great; thick bread, beautiful bacon and a runny yolk. Will definitely be going here again.
