Restaurant
Templo is a cozy Italian-inspired restaurant in North Hobart, offering a constantly changing menu that showcases the best of local produce. With just 20 seats, the intimate setting and communal tables create a casual neighborhood eatery vibe.
Visiting Hobart for January long weekend away (from Melbourne) and booked Sunday lunch at Templo. Opted to go alacarte as the munu (on a blackboard) was not huge but everything sounded tasty. It was Italian inspired plates, delivered one at a time, so best shared. Very honest, almost rustic food, showcasing mostly local and market style ingredients. the wine list (occupying 75% of said blackboard 🥂) is a fresh mixture of local, interstate and Italian wines, a lot of them quite unique and lesser known varietals/blends. The room is quite small, dominated by a round communal table with 5 or 6 smaller tables best for couples. Being a holiday weekend it was a very quiet lunch service which was enjoyable and relaxing with attentive service from the knowledgeable manageress. I imagine it would be a hectic and different vibe if it was busy, especially if a group was on the larger table. All the food was amazing, and we backed up with more cheese brioche and oysters for "dessert" 👍 Compared to Melb/Sydney I felt the prices were reasonable for the higher than average standard of food. We really enjoyed our lunch and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Templo. Three thumbs up 👍 👍👍

I found Templo on the world’s 50 best discovery list for Hobart, tbh it didn’t really meet that bar. I don’t recommend this spot if you’re a solo diner. The space is tiny, but charming - I was dining solo and was sat at the tiniest high top I’ve ever seen, there were two stools but you really couldn’t have fit two people. I found the table very uncomfortable. The wine by the glass list is lackluster, but there are some fine options. I found the pacing painfully slow, I was bored and anxious to leave by the fifth course, but I was also solo, it would have been different if I were with someone. The food is fine, just fine, not great. The oyster add on was good and the crab pasta was the stand out. The portions are small but plenty, much appreciated- you don’t leave feeling too stuffed. I wouldn’t return but can see how this would be a great date night spot. This meal was NOT worth the $120 I paid.

Reservations only. They only serve two settings a night with their 6 course meal. Great for celebrating special occasions. We were there for our 12 years anniversary and our minion’s 10 year-old birthday. Some of the food was a bit too sophisticated for the kid, but they certainly were delights for the grownups! We had a great time! Make sure you mark this place for your next special occasion.

Small cozy restaurant. Everything we ordered was delicious and well-executed, full of flavours and fresh ingredient. Would be great for a date night or celebration. Will recommend!
Evelyn L — Google review
Food is really good (a few standout dishes), but I wouldn’t say exceptional - especially for the price point. Restaurant itself has a great atmosphere and I love how intimate it feels. All in all I would recommend.
Isabella P — Google review
An awesome intimate, fun night out with amazing food. We went for dinner, my partner had the set menu, I had the vegetarian version- it was divine. Really great flavours, beautifully presented, not pretentious or OTT. I ate delicious risotto, polenta, braised cabbage & more all with beautiful sauces. I wasn't hungry or too full afterwards, meal sizes were perfect- 6 courses. Really great local and international wine selection also with good digestivos & beer selection. Staff were fabulous, attentive but gave us space. Great music, great vibe. The perfect balance of everything. Hobart at it's best.

Woooooowwwww. Our favourite meal in Tasmania after a week of eating our way around. Thank you to the chef for accommodating dietary needs and making the best gluten free pasta ever. Oh, and gluten free tiramisu. The carrot, beets and greens were another highlight. Even my carnivorous husband loved them! I think I'd fly to Hobart just to eat here again. it was that good!
Lauren B — Google review
We had four course lunch and the food was absolutely stunning. Each meal was well thought out, simple and flavorful, and the flavours are memorable. The risotto is sublime. It was delicious. The price was reasonable too given the high standard and quality of both food and hospitality. Standing ovation to the team at Templo. Highly recommend if you are coming to Hobart for hols - make sure you reserve a place to avoid disappointment on the day.

Farmers Markets
Farm Gate Market is a lively and bustling Sunday market located in central Hobart, Tasmania. It offers an abundance of fresh, locally sourced produce including seasonal fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, homemade breads and pastas, free-range meats and eggs, freshly caught oysters, and handcrafted gins from local distilleries. The market also features a variety of vendors selling pickles, relishes, jams as well as breakfast and lunch options such as oversized cookies and gourmet toasties.
I was thoroughly impressed by the remarkable diversity, uniqueness, and exceptional quality of the food at this farmer's market. The sellers are not only friendly but also deeply knowledgeable, showcasing genuine pride in their produce. It's a delightful and rewarding way to spend your Sunday mornings—highly recommended!

Farm Gate Market in Hobart is a charming spot for a Sunday morning. While it’s a smaller market, it offers a great variety of fresh farming products like fruits, veggies, cheese, seafood, and meat. The yogurt and cheese store was especially nice! They also have a mix of food stalls serving Asian and Aussie food, which adds a bit of variety to the experience. It’s a cozy market, perfect for a little wandering around the city. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in Hobart on a Sunday!
Jade P — Google review
Pretty awesome market, everyone brings their own basket or recycle bags with them. Brussels sprouts looks soooo good. Wish I can bring it back 😍 didn’t get to buy anything but still happy to walk the market. The veggie looks so fresh

Lovely little street with lots of fresh produce. Some similar shops to Salamanca market the day before, but mostly different and still nicely varied. Worth a quick visit to get breakfast or some quick bites!
Matt H — Google review
It was a lovely experience in the middle of the Hobart city. A busy street has turned in to a local market with home made products and foods from different cultures. It is not massive as Salamanca market, but full of organic products. Had some delicious foods and brought some home grown vegetables😍
Chamath S — Google review
Open every Sunday morning!! Similar to Salamanca Market but a little bit smaller and sill rich in different vendors tho 👍🏻
Jing Y — Google review
As a resident of Hobart that goes there nearly every Sunday this is the market where locals go for a Sunday bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, maybe snack, coffee or to get the latest boutique drink. Its premise is that all stalls have only local Tasmanian produce do there are no souvenirs. And it certainly lives up to being one, if note the best place in Hobart for that. It is the place where Hobartians cross paths and enjoy local produce, even on cold winter Sunday mornings, of that is something you want to do then this is the place to come.
Jaime P — Google review
Looking for something to do on a Sunday, this is a must, the market is fun, and a lovely vibe about it, there are many stalls to enjoy, and there vendors are friendly and helpful.

Flea & Street Markets
Salamanca Market is a bustling Saturday market in Hobart, Tasmania, known for its diverse offerings. With over 300 vendors, the market features an array of products including food, produce, art, clothing and Tasmanian timber items. The vibrant atmosphere along the waterfront showcases locally crafted goods such as unique clothing and jewelry, artisan cheeses, fresh produce and more.
This place is phenomenal. You can find everything here, and even the stuff you're not looking for but want anyway. The craftsmanship from knives to knitted clothing, leather goods and jewellery is outstanding and the unique innovations are stunning. Then there is the produce and the ready to eat food. Lobster Rolls, Scallops on a stick, warm fresh baked rolls with sizzling bacon and eggs, freshly brewed coffee and tea; and that was only the first few steps into the markets. There is more, so much more. The culinary delights from the Middle East to mustard from Finland, sublime.

If you’re there on Saturday I’m a sure someone told you must visit Salamanca market and they are right! It’s an amazing walk around plenty of options to buy, eat or gift. At night and the other days Salamanca place is full of life, with places open till late(not something you find easy when in Hobart) and plenty of options to dine or drink. Trust me you will find yourself keep revisiting this area.

Great variety of local produce, artists, food, drinks, & amazing hard-crafted items. Spoilt for choice! Spent quite a few hours browsing here. Took home quite a few treasures. The market is set just near the docks, so we also got to see the new 'Spirit of Tasmsnia'. You can see Mt Wellington from here, a majestic sight. Great food, drinks, & music. The stallholders were lovely to talk to & full of local knowledge. Loved our day here.

What an amazing Saturday market! This is definitely worth planning a trip around if you want to shop locally and for me especially, for souvenirs for the family! There are so many great stalls from gifts, food, alcohol and more plus local artists playing their music for some fun entertainment! Special call outs for me were (see pics) Cheeky Devil Roaster - they are great. They took the beans and ground them for me to take home to my family to try as well~ love the coffee and love the hat! The Artesia Pewter company what amazing and beautiful pieces they have. I bought wine stoppers for the family members back in America with their favorite Aussie animal. The Tee-shirt shop with such great prices and sizes. Plenty of styles both male and female and some nice light coats too! Ned Pickering Arts for playing an assume fiddle!
Jane F — Google review
It is highly recommended, everyone. There is nothing quite like gaining a deeper understanding of the city. This is one of the most enjoyable local weekly markets one could experience. You can find a wide variety of items here. I particularly enjoyed the fresh produce, food, and apparel. The atmosphere is quite pleasant for exploration. You will certainly have a delightful day there.
Shubham N — Google review
Yes, go! There are so many stalls, there’s something for everyone!! We had sausage in rolls for breakfast with some fresh apple juice from another stall. We got some socks as well as the most delightful ring, recycled from a vintage spoon! The day we went , there was a cruise ship in town, but it wasn’t overcrowded. Plenty of space that stretches right up the hill.
Fran H — Google review
Great day out. Variety of stalls selling high quality products and produce. Not a place to get a bargain but great to sample products straight from the supplier. Very much takes pride in the products produced in Tasmania.

Cocktail bar
Bar Wa Izakaya is a lively Japanese eatery that captures the essence of Tokyo right in North Hobart. This buzzing spot is perfect for late-night cravings, especially with its tempting offerings like tipsy midnight ramen and an array of shareable dishes such as signature oysters, okonomiyaki, and crispy karaage chicken. The atmosphere is vibrant and inviting, making it an ideal place to unwind with friends over delicious food and drinks.
We absolutely loved our experience and were not disappointed by anything. The food was delicious, service was on point and timing was spot on. Service staff were considered and assisted with ordering and any questions we had. They were very accommodating with dietary requirements and made sure there was no dairy in any of the dishes. The cocktail was delightful and fresh. Local wine was great as well. Would definitely recommend getting in early for a booking.

Our family had a great experience here last week for dinner. Walking in, the bottles hanging off the ceiling created a cool and trendy vibe. The food selection is great with varied meat, seafood and veg options. Something as simple as the miso soup really impressed me! The cocktail was very delicious too.
Marian W — Google review
My wife and I had dinner at Bar Wa Izakaya on our first night in Hobart visiting from Melbourne. One of the best Japanese restaurants we’ve been to. Onto the dishes, we ordered - yellow tail kingfish sashimi, wallaby wing-age, yakiniku platter, karaage chicken, okonomiyaki and grilled corn. Every dish we ordered we absolutely loved and could not fault YUMMY AND DELICIOUS, jammed packed with flavour. Staff were so kind, friendly and accommodating. The vibes were amazing and the glass bottles on the ceiling made the ambiance stunning. Highly recommend this place!!!
Johnny P — Google review
Cannot rate this place more highly. Bar Wa Izakaya is an simply sensational venue serving Japanese fusion. Elaborate theming, staff are very attentive and knowledgeable and it hosts a wide selection of Japanese and local beverages. The highlight is the food which is expertly crafted and authentic and quickly prepared. Our two standouts were Kingfish Sashimi and Soba Noodles. Booking is a must.
Dom C — Google review
We spend our lives eating Japanese food in Australia and in Japan. Bar Wa has a terrific set up and fitout with great staff. Vibe is really good. Prices are great. A nifty spot with hidey holes everywhere - holds a lot of people but doesn’t feel crowded. The cocktail and drink list is awesome - if you can’t find something here to meet your needs you won’t find it anywhere. Unfortunately not certain the good made the grade. Whilst it was alright I couldn’t get excited. Maybe that’s just me being picky as we eat Japanese a lot. I’m sure most people would be satisfied with it so would recommend everyone try it.
Rob R — Google review
5 stars for the drinks and 3 stars for the food. Cocktails have all been spectacular. No doubt on this. Food is just so-so. Too much bonito flakes for one, but we probably just ordered dishes that has it. The hibachi grill meats are good. Gyoza and oyster tempura are just ok. Overall, would come for drinks and light snacks.
Erick T — Google review
Best restaurant in Hobart, but make sure you book early as they get booked out super quickly, even on weekdays! Everything we had was delicious, especially the Yuzu oysters and wallaby wings.
Colin L — Google review
Hands down probably the highlight of my culinary experience in Hobart. Food was a mix of amazing Japanese flavours and clearly using the best and freshest produce available in Hobart. The chefs have done an amazing job representing the Japanese cuisine and the bar menu compliments the food menu and no place would be complete without the unique atmosphere and professional and friendly wait staff. You have an amazing venue and an amazing team well done!!!

Located in Salamanca Square, SUZIE LUCK'S Asian Inspired Restaurant & Bar offers a Southeast Asian menu that will tantalize your taste buds. The inventive cocktails are as delightful to look at as they are to drink, and the diverse food options cater to various dietary restrictions while offering unique flavor combinations. The restaurant's quirky design, featuring a vibrant color palette and whimsical decor, adds to its charm.
A visit to Hobart, and the flight was delayed. Checked in, not feeling awesome being late, came to the door no booking and of course they had a table for us. So happy. The service was terrific. From when we arrived to the food, everything. The food.. freshly sucks Bruny oysters.. omg. Then the kingfish sashimi, delicious and with a kick! But the standout meal, Wagyu tartar. I assured my wife it's not my favourite, but was I wrong. Absolutely amazing. If you're in Hobart, worth the visit!
Steve C — Google review
- Efficient friendly service - Standard price for a fusion restaurant. - The Steak & Frites are so juicy and tender. The sauce pairs so well with the steak as well - Beef Panang is sooooo flavorful. The meat is tender without crumbling just how Beef Panang is supposed to be. The Panang sauce goes so well with their rice without being too thick and creamy. - Chicken & Coriander dumplings is a must order. The skin of the dumplings are not too thick and you can taste the “crunchiness” of the chicken - Beef Tartare is also juicy and so delicious. - Pad Thai is usually tricky because some places made it too sour, while others made it too sweet. The one we had was a perfect balance of both. - I don’t know what to say except that all our orders had no miss at all
Andil O — Google review
Tried the market fish (changes daily) and wow — it was spot on. Crispy skin, super fresh, sitting on this creamy coconut curry sauce with just the right kick of spice. The herbs, chili and fried shallots on top made every bite pop with flavour. Served with a bowl of fluffy rice, it felt like comfort food but with a little fancy twist. Great price for the quality too — definitely one of those places you don’t want to miss in Salamanca. I’ll be back for sure! 🙌🐟✨
Flor C — Google review
As an anxious diner, this place was incredible. I cannot stress enough how great the service was!! definitely the best service I’ve ever received anywhere. The food was so fresh & fragrant with minimal wait. The atmosphere was lovely, not too loud and very clean & warm. Will be back the next time we come to Hobart!!
Milly J — Google review
We have dined at here a few times since we have been in Hobart and every time it has never disappointed!!! The cocktails are absolutely divine and the food is delicious…. amazing place to eat!
Charlotte S — Google review
It was our first visit. The food was delicious, but the experience was disappointing due to poor communication. We were three people — my son is 13 (underage) and my husband was driving, so I was the only one drinking. Both of us had already had one drink, and a friendly female server asked if I wanted another. I said yes and asked for her recommendation, then simply followed it. I ordered one cocktail, but it was served in a large carafe with three glasses, and no one explained that it would be charged as multiple drinks. We ended up paying $297.74. Of course, we should have checked the receipt more carefully — a lesson learned — but in this situation, staff really should have double-checked before serving something that would significantly increase the bill. Because of this, I don’t think we’d return.

Entrees were great but the mains could do better 👀 To be honest, I was expecting more japanese inspired food than southern east Asian food 🤔 Good customer servie ✔️

Chicken & Coriander Dumplings and Penang Curry Wagyu Beef . Dumplings are awesome! With peanuts and lime chili sauce bonds them together. Penang curry is the best! Thick, bold and addictive! Sonny is a popular pocket-sized wine bar overseen by local sommelier Alister Robertson. The blackboard wine list features a selection of fizzy, white, and red wines with a natural lean towards local and international choices. The menu offers small plates such as oysters, toast with various toppings, and handmade pasta. With its sleek ambiance and vinyl spinning in the background, Sonny is an ideal spot for snacking or turning it into a full dinner experience.
Truly excellent spot. Visiting from NYC and there is just something special about this place - I wish there was a way to capture this vibe and bring it back to the city. Had a great chilled red, and the green tomato + anchovy toast was a treat. Loved the records they were playing and service was great. It’s a small place, so you’re gonna want to show up right when they open, or within 15-30 minutes to get a seat (especially on a weekend). Worth a stop in Hobart!
Matt B — Google review
Vibes and music were impeccable, and the staff were absolutely wonderful and accommodating. Food was prepared fresh and we had good recommendations for the wine (see: mystery wine on the menu!) Apart from the alcoholic options there was also a very delicious non-alcoholic cider from PRAH that we’ve been unable to find at any other bar / restaurant since.
Audrey K — Google review
Just went here tonight! The food was terrific. Full of flavour, simple but also complex at the same time, so tasty! Staff were all so friendly and bad a good vibe going. They were so helpful in choosing wines and food (in particular this one waitress who helped me choose a wine and carefully went through the menu and helped with portioning sizing). Atmosphere was great. It's small, but it's cosy at the same time. Would 100% recommend and would definitely come again!

Good vibes all round with the long communal bar seating and intimate benches off to the side. Even the LP stand is a seat if you're keen! Wine list hits hard despite it's size and great value small plates.

Loved this wine bar! Bar snacks were great and had some interesting pours. Service could have been more attentive. Recommend getting there early not to queue outside, but totally worth it for the vinyl music and good vibes.

Worth the wait! Really enjoyed the atmosphere and vibe! Food was delicious! We shared the pasta and it was a very generous size! Staff were all lovely and while waiting in the line kept popping out and keeping us updated and in the loop which we loved!

Good vibes, great service and nice cocktails. Oysters were yum but the other food was quite average for a pescatarian. About a 45 minute wait to get seated. Would recommend for a few drinks and some bar snacks over dinner.

Good vibes all around Visited alone and it’s a great environment to chat with new people at the communal bar It is very cozy. It adds to the vibes but it also means it’s quite tight in there, so be warned if you have accessibility needs. I also appreciated that Sonny is walk-in only (no resos)

Nestled in a rustic, heritage-listed building at Battery Point, Jackman & McRoss has transformed from a small retailer into a full-service bakery. Co-founders Chris Jackman and Nerida and Justin McRoss personally renovated the 19th-century building in just five weeks. The bakery offers a relaxed atmosphere and an inviting layout where visitors can enjoy homemade pies, pastries, breads made entirely from scratch using the finest local ingredients.
Hobart must-visit for pie lovers! It is is a true gem tucked into the charming streets of Battery Point. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the aroma of freshly baked pastries and a cabinet full of tempting treats. I tried one of their pies and it was absolutely excellent—flaky, golden pastry with a rich, flavorful filling that hit all the right notes. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff are friendly and efficient even during busy hours. Whether you're after a quick bite or a leisurely brunch, this bakery delivers on quality and charm. Highly recommend!

Had the scallop pie here and it was absolutely delicious – rich, fresh and perfectly baked. The coffee was also excellent and paired so well with it. The staff were really thoughtful and kind, even helping us cut the pie into two since we were sharing. Such a nice touch that made the experience even better. We also saw a rainbow while dining here :)

We have eaten here a few times. Excellent pies, sausage rolls, cakes and other bakery goods, as well as amazing meals. Great coffee and drinks in a lovely space. This cafe has been a staple in this area and we love eating here. I can't recommend it enough.

Service was on point - everyone was incredibly friendly. We were greeted by several staff members, which made the experience even better. It was a pleasant surprise to have table service at a bakery! We had a couple of coffees (and wow, they know how to make a great one). The food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed! I ordered the Scallop Pie, which by the way comes highly recommended from many other review sites and 'Lap of Tasmania, so I was expecting it to be favourable. The pie looks good, it was nicely presented, but I struggled to taste a Scallop anywhere with each mouthful. In all, I sadly only found 4 x Scallops in the pie...The rest were mouthfuls of pastry and filling. On speaking afterwards with a steward, who by the way was very understanding, he commented that they should have a minimum of at least 5x Scallops in each pie....really? I'm sorry, but I had my first Scallop pie at the 'Port Arthur Historic Site' on the weekend . It was a 'Smiths' Scallop pie and I could taste Scallops with every mouthful. Other than that the coffee was good. I gave 1 x more star for the service, as it was good also.
Gary ( — Google review
Average experience here, coffee was a disappointment, decaf is a no go and normal was alright. The pies are great but the rosti lacked seasoning and was a bit bland. This place has potential but needs improvement. Also there is a price difference between eat in and take out between .50c -$4 , to eat in is more expensive?

Wow, wow and wow. This Bakery was recommended to us and we are so glad we took the time to find it and enjoy breakfast there this morning. The location is literally out of this world, it's like you have been transported to another moment in time. I enjoyed the beef and red wine pie, my wife had the goats cheese, caramelised onion, sundried tomatoes and spinach Danish. We also indulged in the custard tart. We are not exaggerating when we say this food was absolutely delectable and this is the benchmark for the quality of food! Never had anything close to these flavours and quality.

This is a local favourite with high quality cakes, breads, coffee pies and savouries. There are some outdoor tables but indoors is the main place for diners. The location in Battery Point is on a very picturesque and historic street and a truly delightful location. The Monte Carlo we had was lovely and we are going to try the coffee later, but all reports are that it is really good. Worth a visit even if to catch the vibe

Fish & chips restaurant
Fast food restaurant
Flippers Cooked Seafood is a popular floating fish punt located on Constitution Wharf in Hobart. It offers a variety of seafood options, including fish and chips, calamari, scallops, and more. The restaurant provides a picturesque view of the bustling harbor. Known for its generous seafood combos at affordable prices, Flippers is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike.
There's nothing better than sitting by the harbor ☺️ enjoying fish and chips while the cool weather and warm sun create the perfect ambiance for your meal 🤩 I might be exaggerating a bit but if you have some time to spare or are visiting Hobart for the first time, I think it's a great experience 😉 The fish is fresh and delicious with a wide variety of options to suit your taste. Overall, I was very impressed 💕

It’d be nice to enjoy the food on the bench. Lucky that Tassie sea gulls are still friendly to visitors. Remember to add your own salt when picking up your fish. Fish is fresh, crab stick, scallop, squid are around average. Personally I also enjoy fish n chips with some sauces.
Z Z — Google review
Top quality seafood can be found at Constitution Dock. Plenty of options available with a number of vendors there. I chose Flippers and grabbed their package of Deep Fried seafood goodness. Cooked to perfection and on a crisp and chilly afternoon it topped a perfect afternoon.

A gorgeous fish & chips experience. Great packages. Easy to follow menu. Please consider stocking Coke/Coke Zero!
Fran H — Google review
My stroll led me directly to the vibrant food area around Constitution Dock, where a variety of food boats offered everything from classic fish and chips to fried chicken, burgers, and even gelato. With so many delicious options, I decided on a late lunch at Flippers. The friendly blokes working there recommended the Trevalla with Chips, and it was an absolute winner! They even offered a choice of seasoned salt, chicken salt, or salt and vinegar for extra flavour, a nice touch. It's a must-try while you're in Tasmania, as Trevalla or Flathead are the local stars, unlike the more common Barramundi, Flake, or Grenadier often served in Sydney and Melbourne. I enjoyed my meal right by the docks, where there's plenty of seating, and, of course, the ever-present seagulls hoping for a crumb!
Ferlene F — Google review
ordered a combo with prawn chips flake and so on. They gave me four pieces of other fried fish instead. When I first checked, the young blonde girl insisted that was correct😅 Only after I took the review photo to question her again did they replace it with the proper combo — which was already cooked sitting there!! With a rude, impatient attitude and no apology at all.🤗 Felt very dismissive and discriminatory. Extremely disappointing experience.😅don’t want to assume anything, but I was being treated differently — possibly because of my race
Daisy Z — Google review
Our stroll around the docks led us to the area with boats as restaurants, we went with what the locals were going with and it was fantastic! My husband had the trevalla and chips, I had the calamari and chips, both were absolutely delicious. The servings were fantastic, even my picky 3 year old enjoyed some of my calamari. The area had plenty of seating that we used while we ate our meals. Some of the best fish we've had in Tassie.
Emma H — Google review
Plain old fish n chips never tasted so good, battered or crumbed, delicious. There is usually a wait, but it's worth it, even standing in the cold, or you can sit in your car, the car park's right on the Wharf! The container is always overflowing so you certainly get your moneys worth.

Malaysian restaurant
Sawak Cafe is a popular spot for Malaysian cuisine, so it's best to make a reservation in advance due to its small size and high demand. The menu offers a variety of options including meat, vegetarian, and Halal dishes. While the char Kway teow may not have been as spicy as expected, the fish curry received high praise. The outdoor seating provides an opportunity to enjoy the delicious food while basking in the ambiance.
After traveling around Tasmania for so long, we were really craving the taste of home—and this place delivered exactly what we were looking for. There was a bit of a wait since the shop is small and can’t accommodate too many people at once, but the service absolutely blew us away! The ladies serving us were so kind, and the speed at which the food came out was incredible. As for the food—the true star of the show—it was absolutely amazing! No words can do it justice; you just have to try it yourself, haha. My dad even took a photo of the owner cooking in the kitchen as a keepsake memory—such a wholesome moment!
Evonイオナ — Google review
A small and bustling Malaysian café that often has a short wait to get seated. The menu features comforting classics like Nasi Lemak, Char Kway Teow, and Mie Goreng. Flavors are solid overall, though portions run a bit small.
Bill W — Google review
The rice in their chicken rice is exceptional - slightly dry, fragrant, and truly appetizing. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff make it a pleasant spot. However, the chicken slightly disappoints; it’s either poorly poached or has an odd, off-putting taste (not too sure which is). The chili sauce also lacks punch.
Nigel W — Google review
Very lovely service, they were so inviting and smiley I felt very welcomed. The food was tasty and wasn't lacking at all. The roti wasn't super airy but it was very flaky and quite big. Don't know what they could've really improved on 💖

Located just around the corner from the rear entrance of the Centrepoint Arcade, this non-fussy eatery is a haven for inexpensive yet delicious Asian food that hits the spot in every way! From dumplings to Kway Teow, Sawak is a little taste of Malaysia right in the heart of Hobart.

This cafe is super cheap. The entrees were super yummy. The noodles were ok need more protein! The prawn wraps where tinny prawns inside not king prawns.

Pigeon Whole Bakers, a hidden gem in Hobart, has been serving up delectable sourdough bread and pastries since 2011. This cozy bakery is a favorite among locals and supplies many cafes with their top-notch products. Their diverse team of over 60 employees is dedicated to creating the best possible experience for customers by focusing on quality ingredients and flavors.
🥐 Hobart’s Croissant Quest: Mission Accomplished Heard this café’s croissants are the locals’ top pick in Hobart? Well, I had to see if the hype was real. Spoiler: it totally is. 😋 Located in the heart of the city, this place is buzzing with energy. There’s limited seating, so picture this: people lining up outside, sipping coffee and munching on croissants like it’s a casual street party. 🏙️☕🥐 Lucky for me, I snagged a seat inside. The café’s modern white building with floor-to-ceiling windows gives off major art gallery vibes. 🎨✨ The staff? Super friendly and efficient. Despite the rush, they kept the good vibes flowing. And the coffee? Top-notch. ☕👌 No wonder this spot’s become a must-visit for Hobart’s coffee and pastry lovers. If you’re in town, don’t miss out. Pigeon was worthy of its name for the top one of the pastries in Tasmania 🥐 🏆 There’s so much items to choose from!! All pastries were super crispy and delicious!! My favorite was Morning Bun👍🏻 The bakery is always crowded haha. Grabbing the croissants and coffee to the park nearby was a fantastic experience in the morning🥳
Jing Y — Google review
Enjoyed the chai, the savoury scroll, the morning bun which was deliciously caramelised but not too much. Textures are on point 😍 and level of sweetness is just right. Also love the cute setup they have the "pigeon hole" to pick up your coffee outside 😁

Tried a couple of bakeries in Hobart on my visit to find the best almond croissant, and must say that Pigeon Whole Bakers takes the crown! The almond flavour was fragrant with a healthy spread of frangipane. The croissant also had a nice rise and was buttery and caramelised. I would have liked the croissant to have been slightly less dense (more layers) but not too much more to fault!
Annie T — Google review
I noticed reviews in Australia tend to be inflated (not sure if it's a lack of discernment of what is actually good food) so I was wary of the high praise but this is good!! I got the savoury scroll, croissant and an iced white. The savoury scroll was delicious, and the croissant stayed crunchy an hour later. They served the ice drink with a huge ice block which helped the coffee retain its taste without being too diluted quickly. Definitely visit here if you are in the city area. The other bakes looked good too, like the sandwich and bagels. I declare this worthy of its rating.
Jill J — Google review

Came here with a large group of friends on a Friday night and it was the perfect choice! There were so many food choices and we all enjoyed trying each others’ picks. The prices varied, there were some cheaper options as well as more expensive. They had live music and we all danced to it after eating. It was a lovely way to spend an evening. (It’s also hyper-local and zero waste!)

Top notch experience, a must try on a Friday night! Markets themselves are really professionally run. There was live music, a selection of around 15 food vans and security and cleaners around making the event really well run. There was a strong selection of Tasmanian alcohol and seafood as well which was another win. Very strong recommend from me!!!

Hill Street Grocer South Hobart is a small independent grocery store chain with 10 locations in Hobart, offering amazing local produce. The largest store in Devonport features an in-house butcher, baker, deli, and a wide selection of cheeses. With three family-owned shops in the city, it's a convenient stop for fresh food and various grocery items. It's known for premium Tassie produce and is perfect for assembling picnic baskets or grabbing pre-made meals.
This is my local. Always busy and always well stocked. The staff (and real checkout people) are friendly and if there's ever an issue with freshness or quality, they deal with it.
Darren W — Google review
Whilst this corner boutique grocery store has a lovely range of fresh produce, bread, deli items, ready made foods, basic household products for cleaning: hair/ personal care and a range of local wines - none of this can change the fact that I don’t enjoy the shopping experience. The prices are very high, even for SoHo but more importantly it is extremely hard to move around the shop ( very narrow aisles, challenging layout and maybe too many products for the space). When it’s crowded, as it often is, you will need to circle back to get what is only a few feet away. The staff are not at all friendly and don’t appear to enjoy their jobs. I really want to like this trendy little grocer that has fab monthly magazines with awesome foodie ideas and options , great Christmas gift ideas and ordering system , fresh delicious crusty sourdough bread and local ( expensive) wines but I just don’t. I feel stressed every time I visit there. But I still do out of necessity , being a regular visitor to the area without a car. An extension to the shop to allow a bit more room to move and addition of some cheaper basic ranges would improve things dramatically I think. For foodies on a high income with plenty of time to shop and no anxiety in small spaces, it would be a 5/5.
Karaleehanson — Google review
We love our local Hill Street in South Hobart. But for a grocer who prides themselves on their fresh produce and supporting Tasmanian producers, it’s disappointing that farmed salmon is stocked and sold here. Tasmanian businesses profit from presenting a ‘green’ image, but real sustainability requires them to actively support the protection of the natural environment.
Elise J — Google review
Please remove farmed Tasmanian Salmon from your stores. It is not only the skate that is threatened but the farms are destroying Tasmania’s marine ecosystems wherever they are located. I'm sorry to give such a low score to your store but until you remove salmon from your shelves I will not be shopping here again.
India R — Google review
I used to shop here many years ago. When I learned that they stock Tasmanian salmon that is harmful to the environment I decided to move my shopping elsewhere. Grocery stores have the power to make better choices. Stocking products that add to our deforestation problem or that polluter our waterways here in Tassie is something you can easily change to avoid native customer feedback. It's all about being responsible. Hope you can make the right call. This is Tasmania and we need to protect our beautiful part of the world.
Aditya M — Google review
Hill street, your target market are not toxic farmed salmon fans. You can afford to take it off the shelves but our waters cannot afford to host this kind of farming.
Leyla I — Google review
Very dissapointed that this business continues to profit from toxic intensively farmed salmon. This product is unhealthy, full of additives and it's intensive prodution is leading to environmental devastation in much of Tasmania's marine environment.

As far as whisky and gin tastings go, this is a must! The atmosphere makes you feel like you've stepped back in time and you've stumbled across a hidden gem of Hobart. The staff are exceptionally friendly and know their stuff. They were happy to help, but also happy for us to sit and enjoy the whisky and the vibes. The variety of tastings and the recommended tastings is so well put together and it takes the worry out of having to decide. Highly recommend popping in and soaking it up!

Forget your average booze run, this is a whisky adventure. The staff? Think whisky encyclopedias with a sense of humour. They'll drop knowledge bombs on you about barley and barrels, but keep it entertaining. And the tasting board? Pure genius. A round platter of flavour hints, like a whisky treasure map. You'll be sniffing and swirling like a pro, even if you usually just down your drinks in one go

Have had excellent experiences here before with great whisky, great conversations, and loved every second; today however despite a nearly empty bar there was little conversation, was forgotten for 15 min and had to remind the staff about the whisky and it was not a great experience. I'll still be back, but left disappointed on what should have been an excellent World Whisky Day.

The famous Tasmania distillery cellar door. Drop in for a dram or in our case gin and tonics in the sun. Soon to be upgraded. There is a full bar up the road as well. Only slip up for us is the absence of some light snacks. The rose gin was very distinctive. Bonus points for the harbour master Tasmanian amber ale!

Loved my experience here, from the atmosphere to the staff and especially the brew! What a nice vibe. Being an American and loving our breweries, I wanted to get a bit of a comparison. Definitely spot on!! The staff is super friendly and helpful, I had a flight and the team member was good about asking me my preferences. The outside is very family oriented and also great for large groups or just a solo looking to enjoy the atmosphere. Dog friendly and a food truck on location. My favorite was the Harbor Master but I enjoyed all I tasted.

Got a chance to try local beer here, I ordered Hobart lager which I guess the best beer on the menu since it carries the name of their shop and the city. The taste was okay for me but to be honest I liked Emu beer more which I got to taste while I was in Perth. Staff service was okay also, they snatch an unfinished can of beer of my associate which we bought in Liquorland and they said it was not allowed to bring / consume while in their premises. They actually did us a favor I guess because the beer we bought in Liquorland tastes terrible because it tasted like expired beer.

We had the most amazing meal here! The seafood platter was absolutely delicious – so fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. The scallops and prawns were a standout, and the calamari was perfectly cooked and crispy. Portion sizes were generous, and everything came out looking incredible (and tasting even better!). The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. You can tell a lot of care goes into both the food and the service. Highly recommend this spot if you’re after fresh, top-quality seafood and a lovely dining experience.
Belinda D — Google review
Ok so there are 2 separate sections to this place, one where there is a bar with live music and a pub kind of feed and another section that is pricier and serves nicer fine dining type food. Oddly (which really needs updating by the venue) there is no menu or mention of the more expensive section in this place when you research it on Google maps, so when we booked, we expected to be going to eat some pub grub. When we arrived, we were actually booked in the fine dining section, but as this is the experience we were trying to book in at other places (booked out), we were ok with that. We had 2 cocktails to start and they were very nice. For food, we ordered the garlic infused roll (can’t remember the exact name) as a starter, Pork Belly main and the eye fillet. We have been to some pretty nice restaurants where we are from in Adelaide, but the pork belly was probably one of the best main meals I have ever had, and that says a lot. The fillet was also incredible. We both had an amazing dining experience and would 100% return the next time we visit. It’s a shame this place’s reviews are lower than 4, I suppose due to the bar and the lack of info on the restaurant part of it on google. It really does exceed this rating if you are going for the restaurant part of it.
Adam H — Google review
Possibly the best quality food I’ve ever eaten in a restaurant, portions were perfect size and were cooked to perfection, service was excellent both from the bar and the kitchen.

A friend & I shared a gluten free vegetarian pizza (which sounded great). When it turned up it was only just warm, undercooked & had very few toppings (or cheese!). For $35, which included the additional $5 for the privilege of a GF base, I found it extremely poor (to be polite!). The venues atmosphere was lacking & the place was also quite cold. Not a great experience.

The communal tables and buzzing surroundings create a convivial atmosphere with floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the constant stream of Mona ferry guests. An absolute gem in the Hobart dining scene. The coffee is consistently excellent, with rich, balanced flavours and perfect texture every time. The ever-changing menu keeps things exciting — from small bites to more substantial plates, each dish is beautifully executed using locally sourced ingredients that really celebrate Tasmania’s produce. The wine list is impressive, with thoughtful selections that pair perfectly with the food. Service is attentive and professional — more in line with what you’d expect from a great restaurant than a casual café — and the team genuinely makes you feel looked after. The space itself is warm, cute, and homely, with a beautiful sunny outlook that makes it a lovely spot for long, lazy mornings or an intimate lunch. A true standout for coffee lovers and foodies alike — Hobart is lucky to have this place.

It also happens to have an incredible outlook over the waterfront and city that is hard for anyone not to love. The food here is always just what you wanted, and the homemade cakes shouldn't be resisted. Coffee hits the mark every time. The wine and cocktails are an added bonus here and better quality than most places in town. The service is warm and efficient and always leaves me feeling appreciated. Great spot for all ages and next to the waterfront carpark that always has a few spots to park conveniently. Come for the coffee, stay for everything else on offer.

One of my favourite spots in Hobart! A beautiful and welcoming space for coffee and delicious food (+ the best Bloody Mary’s!!)
