Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is a meticulously recreated replica of a 1850s Victorian Goldfields town, offering an immersive experience for visitors. The outdoor museum features costumed actors portraying various roles from the era, bringing the bustling main street and mining activities to life. Visitors can enjoy coach rides, mine tours, workshops, and theater performances while exploring the influence of gold discovery on Australian history.
Been a long time since I have visited Sovereign Hill. It was amazing it. Top tip would be to plan day according to the demonstrations. So much to see and do. Such a wonderful experience can’t recommend it enough. Day trips work well and the employees are such a knowledgeable and interesting group. Especially if you haven’t been for 25+ years and the last time was on a school trip, you’ll love it!!
Emily D — Google review
We had the best time at Sovereign Hill. The actors around the place were fun and friendly. We enjoyed the size of the place, walkable but lots to see and get lost in. Had a nice lunch too. Recommend the mine tour, fun tram tour down into the dark. One suggestion would be to include more info about the buildings and jobs that people did in the town. Maybe there some interactive app or something that I missed. Still had the best day and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
Kym M — Google review
Sovereign Hill is a beautifully recreated gold rush–era town, truly a magical place! We went for a one-day visit, and while it was a bit challenging with kids, you could easily spend a full day here exploring all the exhibits and presentations (even two days if you want to see everything). We only managed to catch the gold-making demonstration, which was fantastic. The streets are stroller-accessible, though some of the shops aren’t, which is understandable given the historic setup. There’s so much history to read, see, and experience. I booked tickets via booking.me which only coat me $112 for a family one day pass. Bit of a discount there.
Thilina G — Google review
Husband and I loved our visit on Wednesday! We were there for roughly 5 hours and there was plenty to see and do that we didn't have much down time or waiting around. Wasn't too busy which was a bonus, so we got to quietly enjoy a lot of the experiences and shops minus the 2-3 school excursions running around, but we didn't cross paths often. The staff did a wonderful job at making the experience feel immersive and authentic, and we loved that there were things to enjoy as adults. Definitely recommend buying the mine tour or the photo time slot in advance!
Mel — Google review
This is a truly friendly and lovely park, making it a must-visit destination for a family trip. ‘The local residents’ are exceptionally welcoming and engaging to talk with, and the area offers numerous places to relax and spend time. Overall, it was an incredibly rewarding and authentic experience, far surpassing visits a simulator. Finally, the availability of refillable water throughout the town of Sovereign Hill was an absolute lifesaver.
E C — Google review
A fantastic day or 2 out for the whole family. Step back in time and explore Australia's gold rush history. Cute shops, delicious food from a bakery to a Cafe. We live how the staff are not only in costumes but character too. The displays, tours are really well done.
Lizz S — Google review
I had a great experience at Sovereign Hill. The staff were friendly and made the whole visit enjoyable. It’s really interesting to see how life was during the gold rush era, the old buildings, gold panning, and demonstrations were all fantastic. A great place for families and anyone interested in history.
Omid K — Google review
Took our 4 and 7 year old for their first visit. 4 kept asking when we were going to do the kids stuff as she was bored. Found her happy place at the playground. 7 year old totally enjoyed herself, dug around in the creek, panned for gold, took interest in looking at all the working old machines. Enjoyed the march by the red coats, and musket firing. Watched the running of the stamping machine, and back to the gold panning she went. Also enjoyed all of the shops selling old timers things. While it rained, it just made it more genuine and experience.

Zoo
Ballarat Wildlife Park is a family-run park that offers an incredible experience for animal lovers. With over 100 free-roaming kangaroos, wombats, koalas, and penguins, visitors can enjoy up-close encounters with these adorable creatures. The park also features scaly reptiles and a giant 5-meter long crocodile named Crunch. For those interested in Australia's deadly animals, the reptile exhibition is a must-see.
Had such an excellent time, you can buy kangaroo feed bags for $4 on entry, they're all very docile and sweet. Make sure you bend down far enough so they can snack comfortably. The reptiles are gorgeous and there is a huge alligator they do feedings for depending on the day as well as other feeding times and animal experiences you can explore on their website. Please remember to be quiet and respectful to the animals as you explore.
Alexcia M — Google review
Visiting the zoo was such an amazing experience! It was a little under an hour and a half from Melbourne, but totally worth the drive if you have the time. The kangaroos roam free, and we even got to see a baby kangaroo up close. The koalas were adorable, and the tree kangaroo encounter was incredible. He was so gentle and soft. We called right at 9 AM to book both the koala and tree kangaroo encounters, and I definitely recommend doing the same since spots fill up quickly. The tree kangaroo experience especially felt extra special and is a little less available than the koala encounter (which was also awesome!). There was so much to see, and the huge crocodile named Crunch was unforgettable. Feeding the emu was another unique highlight, and honestly, I could’ve spent all day just hanging out and petting the kangaroos. Such a special place and I’d absolutely recommend it!
Megan — Google review
Such a great place for kids and families! We had the best time getting up close with the animals, feeding kangaroos, holding a koala, and even cuddling a wombat. The park is really clean and easy to explore in just half a day. We also loved the keeper talks, especially the crocodile and reptile ones. And to our surprise, they even have penguins here, so you don’t need to go all the way to Phillip Island to see them! Highly recommend this experience.
Milacarlosg — Google review
Absolutely wonderful, genuinely wish I could give this place more stars. Beautiful habitats, animals are clearly very well looked after. Had an absolute blast feeding the free-roaming emus and kangaroos, and the reptile and tiger presentations I attended were amazing. The staff are clearly passionate about the animals they care for and it shows. Didn’t get a lot of photos because I was too busy enjoying myself, but the park is absolutely gorgeous! Will definitely be returning!
Jayde A — Google review
Nice place to see Aussie animals. Able to pay additional for additional experience like tiger feeding but expensive. Some good feeding time experience with explanation with the Keepers. Kangaroos are over fed and food thrown on the ground as there is little interaction. Overall a decent visit but not worth the 2hr drive from Melbourne and back.

Great park. Sure its not as big as Melbourne zoo but we easily filled in 4 hours at the park. Good range of animals and the kangaroos are so friendly. Animals look well treated as well. I definitely recommend going here.
Andrew G — Google review
Ballarat Wildlife Park offers an immersive experience where kangaroos hop freely, koalas nestle in eucalyptus trees, and the reptile house hums with quiet intensity. The earthy scent of native bushland mixes with fresh hay, and birdsong echoes gently across the grounds. A visit that feels authentically Australian. Recommended, especially with little ones.

The Ballarat Botanical Gardens, established in 1858, are a picturesque and historic destination featuring a diverse array of trees, plants, and flowers from around the world. Located on the western banks of Lake Wendouree, this 40-hectare garden offers a tranquil retreat with its stunning conservatory, fernery, and marble statues.
I recently spent the day at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens after stumbling across photos online and it was totally worth the trip! The location is super convenient, especially with the tram stop right across the road—so it’s really easy to get there if you don’t have a car. Once you walk in, the first thing you notice is the amazing scenery of Lake Wendouree right next to it. It’s such a stunning view and definitely sets a relaxing mood. I also really loved how there are a bunch of sheltered BBQ spots right along the lake, so it’s perfect if you want to cook up a casual lunch or just chill out for the afternoon. The gardens have very clean toilets, and I was impressed that they have good disability access too. It’s not something every place gets right, but here it’s clearly well taken care of. What really stood out to me are the incredible statues scattered around the park. There’s this big statue of Wallace that looks so impressive Plus, there are ducks and birds everywhere! It adds so much life to the gardens, and if you’re lucky, they’ll come right up close to you. Overall, I’d say the Ballarat Botanical Gardens is a great spot for anyone looking for a nice, relaxing day out. Whether you’re into picnics, snapping photos, bird-watching, or just enjoying a peaceful walk, this place has got something for everyone. I’d absolutely recommend stopping by if you’re ever in the area!
Ikjyot S — Google review
A beautifully maintained and peaceful spot! Ballarat Botanical Gardens is nicely arranged and was already showing signs of vibrant life as it gets ready for the spring bloom. The avenue of former Prime Ministers' statues adds a historical touch. Plenty of black swans and coots from the nearby lake add to the charm. Great for a relaxed, scenic walk. 🌿🦢🌼
Junaith A — Google review
The Ballarat Botanical Gardens are an absolute gem and one of the city’s greatest treasures. The Gardens are perfectly situated by the edge of Lake Wendouree. They are beautifully maintained, offering a peaceful retreat with stunning seasonal displays. The Begonia Conservatory is always a highlight— especially during the Begonia Festival —showcasing world-class floral arrangements that brighten the entire space. What makes the gardens truly special is the mix of heritage and natural beauty. The grand old trees, statues, and historic Prime Ministers Avenue give a sense of history, while the wide lawns and vibrant flowerbeds invite you to simply relax, picnic, or stroll at your own pace. It’s also very family-friendly, with plenty of open space for kids to run around, and the nearby lake paths are ideal for walking or cycling. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens are a must-see — peaceful, picturesque, and a wonderful way to spend a few hours immersed in nature.🌹
Hussein J — Google review
We spent the whole day here and had so much fun. Such a beautiful spot. And the kids enjoyed it too. We made a competition about how many statues we could find. Large wooden playground as well and plenty of parking. Good amount of toilet blocks spread out around the area.
Rachel M — Google review
A very nicely set out Botanical Gardens. Well maintained. There is a lake nearby as well as a tourist tram. The Avenue of the Former Prime Ministers Statues along the main path in the gardens was interesting to see. It is a peaceful place to have a walk through or to sit and rest. Well worth a look to see.
Christine B — Google review
Ballarat Botanical Gardens is a beautiful, peaceful escape by Lake Wendouree. The gardens blend history, art, and nature perfectly, featuring grand trees, colourful flowerbeds, and the famous Prime Ministers Avenue. The glasshouse and fernery are must-sees, while the lakeside paths are ideal for walks and picnics. It’s well-maintained, family-friendly, and offers seasonal beauty year-round. A true gem showcasing Ballarat’s charm and heritage relaxing, educational, and inspiring all at once.
Isuru F — Google review
The Sequoia avenue is well worth the visit. It gives you an appreciation of these magnificent trees. The glasshouse is beautiful to look at and has a lovely display inside. The markets on a Sunday were fun too.

First time visiting in August and the gardens were beautiful, even in Winter. Would love to go back in Spring sometime and see all the flowers in bloom.

The Art Gallery of Ballarat, established in 1884, is the oldest and largest regional art gallery in Australia. Located on Lydiard Street North, it showcases a diverse collection of Australian and international art, including colonial pieces, indigenous artworks, and contemporary masterpieces. The gallery also hosts regular exhibitions from around the world and offers free walking tours led by volunteer guides. With its historic buildings and rich cultural offerings, the gallery provides a captivating experience for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
It's free to enter, and the staff are incredibly welcoming and super helpful. They offer free WiFi and have a beautiful collection of unique pieces. There’s also a dedicated section showcasing different artists' work for a limited time. I was pleasantly surprised to find artwork by a Sri Lankan artist on display during my visit.
Randana G — Google review
I went there today. The best thing about this gallery is location which is close to station and shopping areas. Some of the collections were amazing and visiting it is completely free of charge. Just one show these days is a paid one. There were works from a ballarat based artist which were superb. The gallery also had a gift shop to purchase souvenirs as well as a cafe for relaxing. The washrooms were very clean. The staff was really nice. Overall it was a good experience.
Simran G — Google review
We liked this gallery as it was quiet and well-maintained. It wasn’t a big place, they offered about five different exhibitions, from classic paintings to modern art. They also had a small shop and a cafe on the ground floor, which was nice and cozy.
Nanling L — Google review
A well maintained art gallery with beautiful paintings. The guided tour was also very interesting and informative. There were some nice books in the store downstairs as well.
Sandali M — Google review
The gallery resides in a beautiful building that dates back to the town's gold rush boom years. Free entry to see a great collection of Australian and European art with some dating back to 1800 or earlier. There were also temporary exhibitions and modern art installations. Apparently only 2% of their art is able to be displayed there at any one time so it may be worth a follow up visit later on.
Nathan F — Google review
I went to the Art Gallery of Ballarat today on a Friday. It was not busy. Entry was free which is great. Only a few minutes walk from Ballarat railway station. The Gallery is very interesting with a lot of interesting arts. It's very clean and nice like a 5-star hotel. I loved and enjoyed all the arts that they displayed, really appreciate all the staff for taking care of the place so well and highly appreciate all the artists that provided their artwork there.
BeachLover 1 — Google review
Beautiful art gallery with interesting and thoughtful art. Place was packed last Sunday despite the rain, the Vintage Car Show, part of Ballarat's Heritage Festival. It was free entry on that day. We had a walk through downstairs but couldn't handle the crowd so didn't make it upstairs. Will be back.

The building is absolutely lovely! It's so nice to see that it was purpose built, and continues to house many creative works of art. Highly recommend a visit if you are in Ballarat.

Located in Ballarat, Victoria, the Eureka Centre is a museum dedicated to the 1854 Eureka Rebellion, an important event in Australian history. The center showcases original artifacts such as the Eureka Stockade Flag and offers engaging exhibits that use art installations and digital technology to tell the stories of those who fought for miners' rights. Visitors can learn about the impact of this rebellion on democracy and social change through multimedia presentations.
It was a small but beautiful museum showing different types of collection. It was surrounded by a huge park where children can play and families can have their picnics. There was an activity where children could create their own flags. The staff was polite. It also had cafe and washrooms. What else does one need? Overall it was a good experience.
Simran G — Google review
Very good to learn about the Eureka Stockade and the stories surrounding the events. Lots of great artifacts, imagery and articles that tell of the historic event. We spent about 2 hours here, including inside the museum and also walking around the memorials outside. Kids would probably get bored quickly.
Dylan P — Google review
This place is very informative. The presentation of the visual presentations is excellent. It is very engaging and interactive to all ages. The flag is amazing. The entry fee is cheap, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We took the opportunity to also walk around the grounds of the centre, this was fascinating.

The Ballarat Tramway Museum, established in 1971, is dedicated to preserving the heritage of Ballarat's tramway system. The museum features a remarkable collection of century-old trams and operates these vintage vehicles on specific days. Visitors can enjoy an authentic tram ride through the picturesque Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
I had such a fantastic time at the Ballarat Tramway Museum. It really helped me connect between the current tram system in Melbourne and its fascinating history, starting from horse-drawn carriages all to electric trams. I was especially intrigued by how they create schedules to keep everything running safely and smoothly. Plus, all the carriages were polished and well-kept. One of my favorite parts was the cute interactive miniature train display, it was just adorable. I also had a blast coloring pictures of trams in the theater room. There were some really interesting souvenirs, and the toilets were nice and clean. If you're thinking about visiting, I definitely recommend getting a ticket for both the tram and the museum. It makes exploring the area and enjoying the museum so easy and fun.

We hosted our son’s 3rd Birthday party at the Ballarat Tramway Museum and had a blast! The private room was warm, clean and large enough for all our party guests. Everyone (young and old) had so much fun exploring the museum and on the tram ride. The team members working were lovely, and the shop well stocked with nice gifts. We will definitely go back again! ☺️

It was our first time visiting the Ballarat Tramway Museum, and we had a great experience as a group of four. For my wife and me, it was our first time riding a historic tram like this — although the journey was short, it was really enjoyable. While our parents thought old trams were nothing special, for us it was something totally new and exciting! Riding along the lake while taking in the beautiful scenery made it even better. We also took the chance to visit the Ballarat Botanical Gardens nearby. Highly recommended!
Lingfeng L — Google review
Worth a visit. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Nice museum layout + kids enjoyed tram ride.
Jon W — Google review
An interesting place with a lot of history about trams. The kids’ play and drawing area was a nice touch, and they really enjoyed dressing up as ticket collectors. The tram service was good, though not particularly exciting. I did feel the ticket prices were a bit on the higher side for what was on offer. Still, it’s worth a visit if you’re into trams, probably an hour or two would be enough to explore everything.
Thilina G — Google review
Great experience at the tramway museum topped off with a tram ride along the lake. Lots of displays to look at along with information displays.
Lauren W — Google review
The Ballarat Tram Museum is a fascinating glimpse into the city’s rich transport heritage. Located in the historic South Depot beside Lake Wendouree, it showcases beautifully restored trams that once ran through Ballarat’s streets. Visitors can explore vintage vehicles, photographs, and memorabilia, and even enjoy a heritage tram ride around the lake. Run by passionate volunteers, the museum offers an engaging experience for all ages — blending nostalgia, history, and hands-on learning in one charming destination.
Isuru F — Google review
Went on a daytrip today to the Ballarat Tramway Museum, Ballarat Botanical Gardens and Lake Wendouree. Your tram museum entrance fee includes a ride in a vintage tram along Lake Wendouree and there is a tram stop on the short line (just the one) where you can alight to walk across to the Botanical Gardens. You can travel as often on the tram as you like so if your a fanatic you can ride it all day long - ting ting. Once again it's a museum that relies solely on volunteers to keep it going so support retaining your history by visiting!

Ballarat Bird World, situated in the heart of Ballarat, Victoria, is a vibrant aviary featuring a diverse array of native and exotic bird species. Visitors can enjoy close encounters with parrots, cockatoos, and tropical finches in a naturalistic setting. The park offers interactive feeding sessions and educational talks for an immersive experience. Additionally, there are attractions for kids including animatronic dinosaurs, a timber puzzle maze, and a children's fossil dig table.
Very relaxing day out. You'll forget there is a whole city not too far away. Nicely spaced out, so it involves a bit of walking but it also means less bumping into other people. Besides the birds, there is also mini golf and a maze to keep families entertained. The birds are very well cared for and the owners and staff are super friendly.
Antony P — Google review
Good family day out. Less birds then I was expecting in regards to our natives. It would have been nice to see more birds in the massive free flight aviary as there’s so much room a lot birds could get along easily. Make sure you stop to see the sun conure, female red tail cockatoo they are characters & love attention. Mini golf was a hit while mum & dad had a rest. It is nice place visit and go at your own pace. Good little gift shop, souvenirs. Pleasant place to sit outside on the deck and have lunch, cake slices served with fresh cream are particularly nice. Staff very welcoming.

Lots of parrot species here which is why I chose to visit. Not a lot of visitors on this particular day, which gave me the opportunity to capture my shots. l am fascinated by Black Cockatoos and there was a good number of Red Tail Blacks male female and juvenile, and two rather shy Yellow Tail Black. Expected to hear a lot of shrieking and screeching but there wasn't much. There were also lots of other parrots including some non Australian varieties as well. If colourful birds are your thing, you won't be disappointed, and the cheeky Rainbow Lorikeets were everywhere on the day I visited. Incidentally they also have a nice range of hot meals available and beverages. Expect to spend around an hour and half to two hours, and there is a large pond with rainbow trout and lots of ducks, animatronic dinosaur, a maze and mini golf. Nice outing for families, and people like myself interested in birds.

Great place owned and run by locals, very welcoming and helpful. Bush grounds, extremely peaceful. Beautiful bird life, has a small maze, 9 hole mini golf and you can find a few hidden treasures along the walk including some rainbow trout that like a feed. Would definitely recommend.
Narelle M — Google review
The kids had a fun time, and the experience of feeding the lorikeets on entry with pears was brilliant. Mini golf was a blast as was feeding the fish and ducks. In truth the park has probably seen better days and some of the exhibits are a little run down (damaged dinosaur robots and very few birds in the open aviary) but it's a charming place and the most important bit is the kids had lots of fun. Well priced for a family at just over 50 bucks. Thank you

It's been a while since I took my kids here. My 11yo, 9yo and 3yo all had good fun. The staff were super friendly and kind. The coffee was great and cafe food was delicious. They recently added a mini golf (included with entrance) which my kids would not let go off. Definitely worth adding to Ballarat local best family spots to visit.

Absolutely loved it! Highly recommended! The bird park showcases a fantastic variety of birds—so many, it's incredible!❤️🤩 The natural surroundings are beautiful, and the place is clean and well-maintained. A big thank you to the owners for creating such a wonderful experience! Breakfast was delicious and clearly made with love. Thank you for your fantastic work! 😍✨️

Located at 17 Lydiard Street South, Ballarat, Her Majesty's Theatre is a historic cultural icon that has been entertaining audiences since 1875. The grand venue hosts a variety of performances including plays, musicals, concerts, and comedy shows. With its beautifully restored interior and excellent acoustics, the theatre provides an enchanting setting for live entertainment. It is known for its annual program featuring diverse performances such as musical theatre, ballet, jazz, and classical music.
Phenomenal looking theatre with gorgeous old architecture, but I wouldn't normally leave a review about such a theatre if it wasn't for the kindness of the staff. Extra special shout to Lizzy for helping get my hotel key back after I'd lost it in the theatre and had to come back to get it. Exceptional service from a gentleman working there as well but I didn't catch his name. Resolved a very stressful situation for me with kindness, which couldn't have been easy after a big chaotic concert. Will be back for future events :)

Recently saw Carl Baron, and we was brilliant. However, due to booking late, the only seats available were on the Balcony section, which you would assume would still be a good view. My seat was severely restricted due to a rail protruding from the balcony edge. The entire show was significantly blocked by this rail. I wouldn't care at all if these seats were advertised as "Restricted view" but they weren't, so I was expecting a clear view for the performance. The most disappointing aspects is even after emails to the Theatre, their response was simply, "I'm sorry about that and we will make sure in future we label the seats accordingly". Pretty poor ownership in my opinion. Going by other people's review's, they obviously know about this issue but won't address it.

Came here to see Wil Anderson, Yong and Carl Barron. Being at such a gorgeous venue with so much history is a privilege. Absolutely beautiful experience each time.Thank you Ballarat.
Dimi S — Google review
This is a gorgeous theatre. Her Maj's is a Victorian theatre that has just been sympathetically restored. It is cosy sized, with two balconies, gorgeous interior details, and seats that are far more comfortable and roomy than similar theatres in Melbourne. Excellent bar. Drinks can be taken into the auditorium (if decanted into plastic). Incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Easy on street parking. Just a great night out.
Steven C — Google review
Such a beautiful theatre. Great layout, comfy seats it’s a must see!!
Arvind M — Google review
Lovely, restored, old theatre. Really beautiful. However, there was a small problem with not being able to see the stage at all from my seat. I paid a slightly higher ticket price to avoid a restricted view. If you attend a show here, avoid the balcony seats if you actually want to see the show.
Lucy — Google review
I recently attended a show on a cold Ballarat night. While the foyer and long room bar were warm and toasty, the theatre itself was surprisingly cool, and there was a noticeable cool draught coming from the stage throughout the night. This made it rather uncomfortable, and many people around me also commented on it. I could not enjoy the show as I felt cold all the time. Very disappointing!
David C — Google review
The theatre itself is great. Management’s inefficiency is another issue entirely. I feel very let very down. But there are worse Ballarat venues. I.e. Civic Hall. Must be the worst venue in Australia. Wendouree Performing Arts Centre is barely passable.

Lake Wendouree Apex Adventure Playground is a beautiful park located in Ballarat, adjacent to the scenic shores of Lake Wendouree and across from the stunning Ballarat Botanical Gardens. The park offers charming walking trails that meander around the lake and through the picturesque Botanical Gardens. Originally created in the 1850s as a water source for the town, this expansive 238-acre lake has evolved into a hub for water sports and hosted Olympic events in 1956.
Grey spacious playground and grassed areas near the waterfront. The playground it's self is large and a great spot for young kids to run around. Lots of open grassed areas for activities, along with benches to sit and eat at. It is a bit cold being near the water, so bring a jacket. The local geese are very demanding of your food if you have any, so look out. Toilets near by some coffee spots in the area.

I love how your mobile can track you anywhere! 🤣 Even while sitting at a table to "unhealthy - ishly" have an icecream nearby with a friend - now that was delicious! So, always remember to turn off your mobiles location - if needed 🙄 👣 🍦👣 🙄 Oh and I hope all are having a lovely day (8th March 2025!) at Lake Wendouree for the "Botanical Gardens Begonia Festival" and the long-weekends Labour Day. Enjoy the "dogem-cars" too! 🏝 🚙 🏝 🍨

Good playground for kids. My only gripe was how dirty(thick dust) the playground was. The kids were filthy once they played on it & had to have a bath once we got home.

A little family time on this beautiful sunny Sunday. There was so much to see we didn't know where to start .this is the best time of year at Lake wendouree. The place was ALIVE .the paddle boats were fun too . Finnished off with a delicious ice cream on the lake 😋 .

The Apex Adventure Playground at Lake Wendouree is a fantastic spot for kids and families. There’s a wide range of play equipment to suit different ages, lots of space to explore, and the lakeside location makes it extra enjoyable with lovely views and picnic areas nearby. It can get quite busy at times, and parking can be a little tricky on weekends, but overall it’s a well-maintained and fun playground that keeps kids entertained for hours. Definitely worth a visit when you’re around Lake Wendouree!
Celeste C — Google review
Great playground catering for very young through to bigger kids. Lots of equipment and areas for kids to get lost in, inducing parental heart attacks! (It's the timber mazes that do it). Kids all there seemed to love it, and lovely setting on the banks of Lake Wendouree. Recommend.
Mindy P — Google review
Great park to bring children, such a large playground. It is not fenced so you definitely need to keep an extra close eye on them. It’s so close to the lake and has such a variety of birds to watch. I enjoyed watching many black swans swim around the lake and the various other water birds in the area. The bridges by the lake were lovely but the paths do get a bit muddy/slippery after rain. Lots of parking too and has public bbqs and toilets.

Gold Rush Indoor and Outdoor Mini Golf in Ballarat offers two licensed 18-hole courses, one indoor and the other outdoor. The indoor course, named the Lost World, features a mix of Jurassic period and Middle Ages themes. Meanwhile, the outdoor course is inspired by Ballarat's gold rush history with worn timber facades and props. Regardless of the weather, visitors can enjoy these themed courses along with a games room and cafe on-site.
Wow! Wow! Wow 😳! A superb mini-golf experience that's a fun way to spend a few hours playing the indoor and outdoor courses. Both courses offer holes with variety in their construction, and just enough of a challenge to feel any hole in ones have been earned. There is also plenty to look at, and read, as you traverse the courses. The whole place is very welcoming and the staff I chatted with on my visit certainly valued my custom. So go take this fabulous attraction for a test drive when you get the chance to, and get ready to fudge your scorecard 😳😂.

That was a fun & beautiful looking mini gold experience! Please see all of my very many attached photos for a summary of the experience ✨ So why 3 stars? What wasn’t so fun was how much one of the staff members kept flirting with myself & my boyfriend, so we ended up leaving instead of staying to play arcades afterwards cause we felt weirded out. YOU DO NOT NEED TO FIND REASONS TO TALK TO US; WE CAME TO ENJOY OURSELVES, NOT TO WORRY ABOUT SOMEONE TRYING TO FLIRT WITH US 😢 THANK YOU FOR RETURNING MY UMBRELLA; IT JUST CONVENIENTLY GAVE YOU PRIVATE TIME WITH MY BOYFRIEND & HE THOUGHT YOU WERE ME WHEN YOU WENT AROUND THAT DARK CORNER 😢 THEN HE REALISED IT WASN’T ME, AND FREAKED OUT & IT RUINED THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE 😢 THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN A WEEK THAT SOMEONE HAS WEIRDED US OUT SO MUCH; THAT WE LEFT 😢😬🤐🫢 We were gonna try out the indoor course cause it was raining & come back another day to play the outdoor course & then this happened & messed up the entire idea 👎

The staff were friendly, the food was tasty and the mini golf was pretty good. We played the indoor glow in the dark course. It was a very different way to play mini golf. The small arcade was fun for the kids. We had a small issue with the prizes not coming out but the lovely staff member we spoke to helped us with that. It was a nice way to spend some quality time with the family out of the rain.

Great one! For a good price you can play here for hours. The courses are auper, very good maintained and different enough not to get bored. The inside one, lights in the dark, is wonderful and our kids love the scary things and the hole challenges. The outside, also very nice, beautiful scenery. Highly recommend!

We played the indoor course, what a wonderful place! Animated critters with great detail, realistic sounds and perfectly fluorescent. Take trip through different ages while receiving a lesson at each hole. Excellent hole set outs. Will be back to play the outside course one day! Highly recommend you visit if in the area.

The Ballarat Aviation Museum offers guided tours of its airport hangar, which houses a diverse collection of aircraft, engines, radios, cameras, and aviation memorabilia. The museum is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the former RAAF base during World War II. Visitors can marvel at non-flying aircraft such as the Wirraway, Dove, and Flying Flea, as well as Malkara and Ikara missiles.
Lovely quaint museum tucked away at a quaint airport. Very reasonably priced for a passionate small endeavour, was fantastic to see some of the history of our local aerodrome as well as preserved aviation equipment. I visited on a rather bleak, well typical Ballarat day…..but even with thunder roaring outside there was still plenty of interesting tidbits to explore. It is a small museum, however that’s all a part of the charm I say.

Some old uniforms, pictures, airplane parts, and more. Not much to see to be honest. Probably the best part of it is if they'll allow you to check the actual airplanes at the hangar (They're not part of the museum but the guy who runs the place allowed us to check the planes, with his supervision of course as they're privately owned. My kid enjoyed it as she's able to see actual real planes up close.) Fairly priced.

Woowookarung Regional Park, located in eastern Ballarat, is a 641-hectare natural haven accessible from Mount Clear. The park offers old forest trails for exploration on foot and various mountain bike tracks. It's an ideal spot for spotting native wildlife such as kangaroos, echidnas, and diverse bird species. The MTB trail starting in Alex Mills Park winds through the park, providing a real sense of adventure with off-trail sections.
A huge regional park area with several walks to take your dog. Lots of wildlife and some stunning scenic views on one side of the park. A few mountain bike trails and some very flat paved trials towards the northern part of the park. Parking locations in several places around the park, and limited toilet facilities scattered throughout.

This will be a treasure for the future. It is the old Canadian plantation, which was once covered in pines followed by blue gums. Thanks to the Labor state government it was declared a Regional Park. As such it is threaded with walking and mountain biking tracks. The Friends of Canadian Corridor are doing an excellent job developing a master plan for the park. Lots of wild plants and animals still. If you spot a koala, let the friends know (they are on FB).

I am lucky ... I live Neighboring Woowookarung Regional Park. Nothing nicer after a day at work to get on my mountain bike and cruise around the trails in the park (I am an old and slow MTBer) so I am very lucky to have such a resource at my doorstep. There are a couple of other great view points in the in the park that are great to visit, and plenty of Wildlife including Echidna, Kangaroo, koala and of course bird life..even see the occasional Wedge Tailed eagles. Only disappointment are the people that still think it is ok to dump rubbish in the park.. very disappointing that people think it is ok to do stuff like that. Also you still do get trail bike riders in the area. Most are ok and are careful but you still get the occasional idiots who think it is the fink desert race..

I rode the track from Ballarat to Creswick and back. It is a pleasant ride on a mountain bike, through some lovely bush, with enough challenges to keep it interesting. Signage, however, is very poor in both direction, resulting in much confusion, lost time and wasted energy!! Some markers were very faded, some hidden by vegetation and in places non-existent!! I met other cyclists who found the same, including one guy who tried to ride from Creswick to Castlemaine but gave up when he lost the track several times. It would be easy to get lost here, with tracks everywhere, so whoever is promoting the track as a tourist activity needs to get the signage sorted out properly! I made the trip because I had active mapping, and wouldn't travel along this track without it.

Victoria Park in Ballarat is a gem of open space and serenity. The vast grounds stretch out beneath towering, shady avenues of mature elms and oaks, their leaves whispering in the breeze. The scent of eucalyptus and freshly cut grass lingers in the air, especially near the well-kept sports ovals and cricket nets. Birdsong echoes across the parklands, blending with the distant thud of footballs and the laughter of children. Whether you're walking, cycling, or just soaking in the calm, there's a quiet dignity to this place that invites you to slow down and breathe. A true community treasure.

Black Hill reserve is more popular destination for bikers and walkers alike. There are 9 trails you can choose from - just be cautious if you are on a bike, there might be pedestrians who are simply enjoying a walk in nature. All trails don't have a proper path or steps so be very careful especially when going down. There is a big rock formation - which you will encounter on some of the walks. Head towards route 9 or 4 to reach the bottom of the said rock.

Highly recommend giving it a go if you’re looking for a fun activity to do. Also the lady at the reception desk was super friendly and nice! Providing some of the best customer service I’ve had in ages. On top of that she was awesome at multi tasking.

Workers are absolutely lovely. We had our son’s party there. We were told to arrive 15 minutes early which we had and the room was still in use. Once it was cleaned the room was a perfect size. We had 22 kids in the group. The only thing that was really disappointing was that we had only been given two jugs of water. When asked for another they said they had no more. The host was having to do the front desk as well as the party. So they were unable to keep an eye on the games when they were over, so the parents had to do most of the work. I would like to suggest more water jugs. And for them to be larger. If you are planning a party be sure to bring everything yourself including tablecloths, cups and plates. The only thing supplied are the jugs of water

The Ballarat Aquatic & Lifestyle Centre is a fantastic destination for families and fitness enthusiasts alike. Nestled in a city renowned for its rowing heritage, this center offers swimming lessons that cater to all ages, making it an ideal spot for those looking to improve their aquatic skills. Parents can take advantage of the world-class gym while their little ones enjoy the creche facilities. For thrill-seekers, there's an indoor rock-climbing wall that promises excitement and challenge.
Great affordable family day out. Clean pools. Lots of swim spaces to chose from that are both warm and cold. Staff were attentive but also let the kids have fun. Will definitely be coming back again and again.

Ballarat Aquatic & Leisure Centre – Great Facilities, But Needs an Update Ballarat Aquatic & Leisure Centre offers a wide range of facilities, making it a popular spot for fitness, swimming, and family activities. The staff are generally friendly, and the location is convenient with good access and parking. However, during my recent visit, I was disappointed to see that the flooring in the kids' pool area has not been updated or maintained to the standard you’d expect from such a prominent community facility. Given the high usage by young families, safety and cleanliness should be a top priority. An upgrade would definitely enhance the overall experience and comfort for both kids and parents.

Was once a good indoor 50M pool to swim in, now it's always divided in half and full of boats and/or other activities you have to pay extra for. Management only switch the sauna on for VIPs and the spa is full of people soup.
Jordan W — Google review
Challenging environment for people with sensory issues. Needs a rehab pool that is only used for rehab/people with disabilities. 45 minutes sensory time is not sufficient. Staff have widely varying empathy for people with invisible disabilities. Council needs to consult with disability community more on public spaces design, and staff training.
Lex B — Google review
Cast an eye over the gym and you’ll quickly realise the real workout is trying to ignore how filthy the pool area is. The waterline sports a lovely crust of grime think of it as a “natural exfoliant.” The pigeonholes for your belongings? Grotty enough to make you consider just holding your towel for the entire swim. And the water? Less refreshing dip, more chemical soup with a hint of mystery. The secure lockers haven’t worked since what feels like the Industrial Revolution, and best of all, parts of the pool are routinely closed with all the warning of a surprise pop quiz except this one costs you money before you know what’s happening. A triumph of mediocrity disguised as a community aquatic centre.

We don't come here very often but when we do it's a great time, on a personal side of things sometimes staff aren't the most helpful and can be very blunt. (Not all staff) but on a bisness level our coffee van was hired to do an even here for the swimming championships, and the staff were extremely helpful and put us in an amazing location with no questions asked 😀

We really liked our visit to the aquatic centre this week. Has lots of pool areas and a reallllly nice spa. The children's pool is lots of fun with a really cool frog slide. The whole place is quiet and very clean and well maintained. The lifeguards are nice and friendly and has heaps of change rooms. Has a kiosk with seating area for hot and cold food including coffee and hot chocolate.Has we check in codes and need to show vax status. Pricing is relatively cheap too. On a hot day this is a really nice place to be.

After having a accident i was told to do Hydrotherapy at the aquatic center. Very disappointed. 10 people in 1 group. The middle hidro pool was used for the following. Hydro, auswim and active links session. So thats 10 people in a 7m pool trying all to recover and do excersise. Not much room to move. Also kids loud in the active links lesson which made it very distracting even though there was only 5 kids. Had an hour appointment with kathy, who seemed to be always in a rush and appointment only went for 50 mins. After you finished your excersise you told ok you can go. Wouldn't recommend it, however no other places to go. Just dont go if in chronic pain as you wont last your session.

Xtreme Bounce Park is a fun place for the children where they can enjoy different activities such as high jump airbag, heap of interlinked trampolines, Xtreme basketball and even a wipe-out challenge. There is also a small cafe where parents can join in and sufficient parking.
Had my daughter’s 7th birthday party. Millie our party host was absolutely hands down AMAZING! She truly made the party being so attentive to all the children’s needs, playing games with them even made the effort to remember all their names! Millie well done and thank you for being such a fab party host!

✨ Extreme Bounce was a great experience! The facility is well-maintained and offers a good variety of activities. It can get a bit chilly inside, but overall, it's a fun and affordable option, especially for school holidays with kids. They're efficient with scheduling, and birthday parties are also available. Just remember to keep socks or just get a pair for $5! 😂🙌

Friendly staff. Staff made me a coffee and couldn’t find me. Gave me a refund and free drinks for my kids, plus a fresh coffee. Blown away by the amazing level of customer service. Clean facilities. Kids had a ball! Highly recommend.

I ate nearly a whole bowl of chips and gravy it was that good. While my kids played. They ran out of steam after 1 hour which is just enough, however they would have happily gone another hour if I bought them more stuff from the cafe.

I was up from Melbourne for the day and found this to be an awesome place to get away from the rain. My daughter is 2 years old and she had a ball. It caters well for all ages and had excellent facilities. Everything is really new and clean and the staff were friendly.

My 8 year old was frustrated that she couldn’t get up on the side walks by herself in the approved area. I saw a guy that worked there who was jumping really high and ask him to help her. He come in and coached her so she could bounce high and how to get up there. His name was Tom and he spent about 5 minutes with her. She didn’t get it straight away, but kept at it, and was able to get up there 4 times before our session ended. Thanks Tom for helping her to achieve this goal!

The Midlands Reserve and Water Park is an excellent place for children to have a fun day. There is plenty of water play, a playground, and shade. The park also has water jets that are great for kids.
The recent upgrade to the surrounding area of Midlands Reserve and Water Park are outstanding. A wonderful opportunity for folks to enjoy the outdoors.

We originally went to the one in Sebastopol (they were doing maintenance on a Sunday)... This was the alternative. There is more of a playground at this space and the water parks are very similar but there is no fencing (given a main road, a little confusing). Overall pretty decent...

Excellent place to drop in with the kids on a warm day. Lots of shade and grassed areas to sit in. A great free initiative from the council. Kids love it. Also has a great little playground and handy restrooms.

Very clean park, bbqs regularly cleaned. Public toilet access just maybe need x2 toilets. Can't wait to bring kids in the summer. Central highlands need to inspect their water drinking tap it's always leaking.

An enjoyable and clean play space. Would benefit from more shaded areas as they fill up fast on hot days. Unfenced and open to busy Doveton St, although a good area of lawn separates the road and park, but worth notibg if you have a runner.

Hop Temple is a unique and spacious venue located in a converted stables down a charming laneway in Ballarat. The industrial-chic setting features an array of craft beers and ciders, boasting the largest selection in Victoria with over 220 options available on tap or by the bottle. The interior is adorned with eclectic decor such as hanging bicycles, antique doors, and lush greenery, while murals decorate the exterior.
Another great bar on our "mini pub crawl" in Ballarat. Great atmosphere and vibe. Great range of beers and wines (and non-alcoholic drinks) Food available. Happy Hour is great. Thank you to Kieran for his welcoming smile and eagerness to answer our questions. (And the #behindthebarwithsurchy photo). A must visit venue in Ballarat

This was our first Experience at this beautiful brewery, and we were pretty impressed by our visit. This bar had such positive vibes, professional staff, and memorable draft beers. Perhaps the only critique is the relatively high price of the beer, which I believe is justifiable given the quality. It was a great experience and highly recommended to everyone.

Cozy place with really fun music. You cannot miss the bbq platter and add the cornbread and housemade ranch, one of the best meals I’ve had. The platter plus a couple of sides was the perfect amount of food for the two of us. Couldn’t be happier

Having just moved to Ballarat we were keen to explore some different places. We have now been to Hop Temple twice in 4 weeks. The warm eclectic decor is so well done, the staff are super friendly and keen and the food is really good. They have happy hour from 3pm with half price drinks and some food is half price also. It's very good value and we enjoy the vibe. We happened to be there on a Wednesday night when they were running their weekly trivia. I was surprised how full the place was with everyone enjoying the trivia fun. We will keep calling in, it's a great place.

Food was good. Cocktails was fresh. Music was a little loud for dinner time but it has a pub like feel so expect some background music but could have been background music. Was hard to talk to people at the table due to everyone having to yell around you. But other then that would definitely do takeaway food

Visitors rave about its welcoming staff, cleanliness, and accessibility features that make it suitable for everyone.
Great venue, location near train station is convenient for those travelling out of town. I was front row and had been worried about my neck but it wasn't too bad as there was enough space between the stage and the seats that I wasn't looking directly up. Seating is flat on the floor so I don't know how this would affect visibility if far back.

Went to see Parrawung in the Sky very hard to hear what the singers were saying. Seats very hard for sitting 2 hrs, especially my 85 yr old mum. But the show was ok , lucky on the wall they had projected Text, because you couldn't understand what was being sung you could sort of understand the story. Hopefully all the hundreds of kids could follow the story, but most around us looked very confused, very well behaved school kids Somthing different.
TJ H — Google review
Great venue, its the staff that let it down. Asking us to leave 10 mins after the show to apparently to clean up. Not sure what needed cleaning up, the room was empty.Even a male security came into the female toilets to lock up. There are nice ways to clear people, they choose the rude way.

Would not recommend. Although the venue is gorgeous, customer service is some of the worst I have ever seen. We have just been to a show here tonight, and it was such a big disappointment at the meal time . We had five dietary meals at our table . They only wrote 1 down, and that was for the wrong person, plus the office wrote it down as the wrong diet. Not enough rolls are handed out , not enough glasses, nor butter . The light in the middle of the table was dead . The pumpkin on the plates were so dry that we needed a chisel to get it off the plates. the potato was very dry . The music was great, though the stage didn't have fans nor water for the band until someone asked for them to have it .And the night left us not to come back to eat here again . I hope , if you come, it's not up to that standard .

Absolutely worse organisation I've ever been to. Was told buses would run all day from the car park and couldn't get in any other way . And staff were extremely rude ,then sat out in the rain and was then told buses weren't running , had to walk back in the pouring down rain where we were told you couldn't get in that way to begin with HEALTH AND SAFTEY is very important but not for Ballarat race track . WILL NEVER ATTEND ANOTHER DAY THERE , Absolutely JOKE

The concert and performance was fantastic.Unfortunately the venue was extremely hot and as it was a full house. Everyone in the audience were using what ever was available to fan themselves. Regent Cinemas is a stunningly renovated vintage movie theater that offers a wide variety of movies for kids and families to enjoy. They also offer sensory friendly screenings with low lighting and sound which are perfect for small babies. The only downside is that the screen size could be bigger, but overall this cinema complex is second to none when it comes to drama, style and theatre.
Art deco! What a timeless building. Felt like I was on a movie set while standing in the foyer. Gorgeous chandeliers, grandiose staircases. That old font for ‘tickets’ (you’ll know it when you see it). Absolutely beautiful piece of history complete with light up exterior signage.
Aly M — Google review
Stunning theater, like taking a step back in time. However, the speakers are very outdated, not quite surround-sound and very quiet, so if you are hard of hearing like my mother, I wouldn't recommend this theater. There are tonnes of stairs also, so not wheelchair or disability friendly. There was no cooling available also, so it was very very hot and uncomfortable in the theater. If you do go on a hot or warm day, I recommend bringing water and a fan to keep you cool and comfortable. The wait time to order food is also off-putting as it is the same line to order tickets. We left the line having still not been served, to go watch the movie after 40mins waiting. So I do recommend if you are going to go very early if you wish to order tickets or food/drink.

Classic style cinema, which is really cool. Unfortunately, our cinema (4) was very dirty, it had cleaning equipment at the door of the cinema, but it wasn't used... the screen was also very scratched and dirty. People are paying $20 for a ticket for that kind of experience when you can go to event cinema where its much cleaner... I will go again as this was my first experience, so may be a one off.
Michael C — Google review
So glad this cinema is back. Beautiful inside, great variety of films and film festivals. Comfy seats, plenty of leg room. A fabulous night out with a brilliant array of bars and restaurants so close by. Well worth a visit.
Leah R — Google review
It's nice to see the cinema back. Went to see a movie and was unfortunately in a cinema with loud talkers and phone users. Spoke to staff, who said they'd do something about it.... but never did. This has happened multiple times recently. Paying for an experience at the cinema is expensive nowadays, so it would be nice to have staff take this seriously. It sucks that it has to fall to other customers to police general movie etiquette. As well, the cinema is in dire need of maintenance. But other reviews reflect this. I don't see myself coming back here, because it's not worth the money.
Sophia N — Google review
We are very happy that another company has re opened The Regent Theatre Ballarat. A bad way to start the experience was to wait 10 minutes only behind 1customer to buy tickets.with one staff member working. After many apologies from the young girl we attempted to purchase tickets. She had to connect the electronic payment to WiFi at 4pm ? She again apologised it was slow. After 10 minutes it was not going to work. We could not buy a ticket unless we used cash. Really! Off to find an ATM so we could actually buy a ticket. This ordeal should not happen theses days. Most people pay by card so was every person this evening going to be turned away to find cash. What is wrong with their connection. The pub next door, no problems, the cafe across the road , no problems but in the theatre seem to be a problem.. Time to get it right if you plan to stay open.

Funbugs Playhouse Ballarat is an enchanting destination for families seeking a delightful day out. This indoor playground offers a variety of play zones, including a jumping castle, climbing areas, and even a rollercoaster section designed specifically for younger children. Parents can unwind at tables while keeping an eye on their little ones in this safe environment where only kids up to 8 years old are allowed to play.
Overall amazing place, awesome customer service!! Definitely the best in Ballarat!! As a single mum of 2 toddlers this is the type of place where dreams are made from. It is very obviously run with care and every bit is so well thought out to cater to small children and their needs/ wants. I have been travelling with my 2.5 and 3.5 year old full time for 2 years now and we have been to play places all around the country and a few in America as well, and could say this is by far the best I have been in. The staff are fantastic as well, and we will definitely be going back this week.

Owners are lovely, and the centre is very clean. They offer birthday parties but unfortunately there is not much parking available if it's busy, maybe 20 parks including street parking. Free for parents to enter, children under two $10, 2-8 years old is $16. They let me bring my newborn in for free seeing as he couldn't play on the equipment. Yummy hot food and drinks available, as well as biscuits, muffins and cold drinks. Only has one baby change table and is quite cold inside - would recommend to wear a jacket or warm jumper during winter. Lots of fun things to do for kids of all ages.
H. — Google review
**Very disappointing and upsetting experience.** This was our first visit to this indoor playground, and sadly, it turned out to be a very unpleasant one. Our child was hesitant to go on the play equipment alone, so I briefly accompanied him just to help him feel comfortable. I was completely unaware that adults weren't allowed—there were no clear signs or guidance provided. Instead of explaining politely, a staff member screamed at me in an extremely rude and hostile manner. It felt unnecessarily aggressive and left us shocked. To make matters worse, we had specifically ordered a vegetarian sandwich (as we are strict vegetarians), but were served a meat sandwich. This was not only careless, but also deeply disrespectful to our dietary choices. Even though we chose not to escalate the issue at the time, it added to the overall disappointment. Another family there came and told us they had a similar experience and were being treated differently—possibly even racially profiled. No family should ever be made to feel this way in a public, family-friendly space. I sincerely hope the management reflects on this and takes steps to improve staff training, customer experience. We will never be going back there!

Great indoor play center, very large and spacious inside. Perfect for 1-5 year olds, plus nice space for babies to explore. Facilities are kept clean and staff are very welcoming. Cafe is great for coffee and prices fairly in comparison to other play centres. The kids are already asking to return!

Great indoor play centre for toddlers that’s clean with a nice cafe. Just wish the hours were longer in the arvo. Can really only go in the morning with a little one if they have a midday nap
Ashlyn C — Google review
Very very average. A lot of restrictions with what parents can do with their child/ren. I have a 2 year old who is very active and confident when it comes to climbing and exploring, and the fact I couldn’t monitor him on the larger equipment, ment I had to prevent him from going on it. This is the only play centre where there are so many limitations for parents.

"Blood on the Southern Cross," now known as AURA, is an enchanting open-air attraction that brings to life the rich history of gold through a captivating sound-and-light show. Running six nights a week, this experience allows visitors to explore Sovereign Hill after hours, offering a unique perspective of the site. The dedication and professionalism of the staff shine through in every aspect of the performance, making it an unforgettable journey into Australia's past.
What an amazing experience. The show was full of professionalism, dedication and passion to bring you the past historical events. It was nothing like what I envisaged but nevertheless we were awestruck by this show. Gets very cold here in winter so rug up really well and enjoy the ride. Its a pity that this amazing show is wrapping up this year, so I have heard, not sure if this is true though unless someone can confirm that 2018 is indeed the last!!!!

Having been to the Blood on the Southern Cross experience a few years ago, this was a huge let down for myself and my friend who was a first-time visitor to Sovereign Hill. Starting with the initial 3D show which talked more about the big bang and the creation of the universe, with only the last minute or so leading to the creation of gold. The experience in the middle on indigenous history and folklore was interesting but didn't seem to tie in with the history of SH. You have to also be prepared to stand for this experience. The final experience about the actual gold rush, eureka rebellion etc was the interesting part but terribly long-winded. All interspersed by two bus rides that took up about 15 mins of the 90 mins. I felt sorry for families with young children who were probably promised this amazing sound and light show, which in the end was boring.

I attended the Aurora light show which ended up being a 3-part adventure. Please read on where I reveal my thoughts and observations. The first part of the journey was a visit to the planetarium, where we were presented with a short movie about planets and solar systems. I did not realise people who mined for gold in Ballarat were so interested in stargazing. Fascinating. Between each show, we rode on electric busses which I didn't know existed in the 19th century so to say I was surprised would be an understatement. The Starwars music during each bus ride to the different parts of the show was most amusing. Following a pseudo-science lesson on space, the second part lead us to a projection on a hill where we were required to stand. Unfortunately I was unable to see the majority of the projections, but based on what I was able to hear, it sounded like a fairytale about a small group of birds that created the earth and man, a rather intriguing tale indeed. The final part of the journey was to a building that featured wall projections. After a short while it suddenly opened into a wider outdoor stage, impressed by this display I was anticipating a grand finale fueled by the advertising I had been exposed to. During the show, multiple fires broke out, people were shot and one of the larger buildings burst into flames. It was a sincerely sad event, there were no ambulances or fire trucks to come to the aid of these men and the buildings in which they inhabited. I can only imagine such things did not exist in the 19th century so they remained true to the era and let the men perish and buildings collapse. After these devastating turn of events, we were able to exit back on the electric busses and make our way back safely. During the trip back no one spoke about what happened, I believe this was out of respect. Overall the technology used was very out-of-date, I'm unsure why they didn't hire real actors.

As a Christian family, we didn't appreciate the 3D movie of the Big Bang theory being presented as if it were fact. Our kids also didn't understand nor enjoy the whole Aboriginal component; again just Aboriginal myth being presented as if it were facts just instilled confusion in our kids. We did, however enjoy the actual Eureka Stockade component and thought it was very well done.

This is experience was ok. I was under the impression we would see the show around the streets of Sovereign Hill. But it started with a long winded 3D movie of the beginning of space and eventually how gold formed, then a bus to a standing outdoor theatre for an Aboriginal story on the beginning of earth. Then another bus to a seated theatre that after a cartoon story the wall opened to an outdoor stage with projections of actors on tents and buildings to finally tell the story of the Eureka Stockade. Overall I felt a little underwhelmed by the whole show, at least it wasn’t expensive.

What a spectacular experience this was, the amount of dedication the staff put into this event is unbelievable. If you haven't been since you were a kid, 100% recommend to check this out. I will say that it seemed the kids under 10 seemed to be a bit scared/bored/tired (as this is a night time outdoor event) so perhaps for the older kids. The fact you get to see Sovereign Hill out of the standard hours, and the ride on the carts they have take you to an area you don't get to see during the day. Would again 100% recommend to go if you haven't had the opportunity to see this one. Loved every minute.

The Golden City Paddle Steamer Museum Society offers a fascinating look into the history of Ballarat and Lake Wendouree. Visitors can explore the rich heritage of paddle boats, birdlife, botanical gardens, rowing, and fishing through engaging exhibits and a slideshow of Greater Ballarat photographs. The museum also features a captivating art exhibition showcasing local talent. Additionally, guests can enjoy a leisurely cruise on the beautifully restored paddle steamer for a memorable experience on Lake Wendouree.
The museum is small and you have to buy tickets for the paddle steamer on board which is the opposite side of the lake behind Piper's Restaurant. Don't leave it too late to get over there. Otherwise great.
