Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse, dating back to the 1850s, offers a historical journey with its staircase leading to the top and displays showcasing its past. The city's Plaza Mayor features various unique monuments such as the City Gate with an impressive drawbridge, the Street of Sighs offering a view of the sea, and the oldest church in Uruguay - Iglesia Matriz. Visitors are encouraged to allocate at least 4-5 hours to explore this charming city before catching their ferry.
we visited the lighthouse during our trip, and although we couldn’t go inside due to the long line and its midday closure, it was still a beautiful sight to see. One thing to note is that children under 8 aren’t allowed inside, which influenced our decision not to enter. Even so, the experience was enjoyable. The lighthouse stands as a stunning landmark surrounded by charming old buildings, which added to the historic and picturesque atmosphere of the area. Simply walking around and soaking in the views made it a worthwhile stop.

Nice oldie worldie feel about it. Good just to walk about and have a cup of tea. Great sunset photos.

The town was very nice. Close to wineries, although I wasn't able to fit that in. It is more for couples and families then it is for nightlife. Quiet and relaxing. One or two days is all you need.
Andrew B — Google review
If you want to get a nice picture for the entire town, you have to get up there, and I am calling it the "Million Dollars View". The stairs are very steep, and they don't allow people wearing sandals in for safety reasons.
Jonna N — Google review
🏛️🏛️🏛️ A HISTORICAL LANDMARK. The lighthouse is the most prominent structure within the walled fort of Colonia del Sacramento. Built in the 1850s on the ruins of nunnery. The beacon of the lighthouse has been a guide to ships in the estuary of Rio Plata.
A ( — Google review
Walking through the cobblestone streets of Colonia del Sacramento feels like stepping into a time capsule. Every stone, every colonial facade, every old lantern seems to whisper stories of sailors, merchants, and cultures that crossed paths in this corner of Uruguay. And right in the heart of it all stands the lighthouse. The Colonia Lighthouse rises above the ruins of the old San Francisco Xavier convent, and from the top, you get a sweeping view of the city embracing the Rio de la plata river But the real magic isn’t just the lighthouse. It’s the walk. Heading downhill from the historic center toward the river, surrounded by whitewashed walls, blooming bougainvillea, and uneven stones, you feel something deeper. There’s a quiet energy, almost spiritual. The Río de la Plata appears at the end like a vast mirror, and you feel small but full. Recommendation: Take the walk in the late afternoon, when the sun begins to dip. The golden light on the stones and the river creates a magical atmosphere. And if you can, climb the lighthouse just before sunset. It’s a postcard moment you won’t forget.
Joseph G — Google review
Cool lighthouse 💡🏠 to stop by briefly. It looked really cool with the blue 🔵 sky and birds 🐦 flying in the background. Unfortunately, it was closed ⛔ when we went so we couldn't see the inside of it.
Vikram B — Google review
Nice old colonial town, there are a lot of bars and restaurants, you can climb the lighthouse, walk the original streets and spend easily half a day waiting perhaps for the ferry to Buenos Aires. The old town is situated just a few blocks away from the ferry and bus terminal.

Nestled in the charming town of Colonia del Sacramento, the Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament stands as a testament to history and architectural beauty. This grand Catholic church, built by Portuguese settlers between 1808 and 1810, features impressive arched ceilings and antique pews that transport visitors back in time. Despite facing challenges like an explosion in 1823 that necessitated significant renovations, it has preserved its original one-nave design through careful restorations over the years.
A great place to visit with family. Children under 9 years old cannot climb the lighthouse.
Laura M — Google review
The parish was established on 2 February 1680, being one of the oldest in the country. The present church dates back to 1810, when it was built according to plans by Tomás Toribio, soon afterward a lightning storm destroyed the building. In 1976 a conceptual refurbishment took place. Architects José Terra Carve, Antonio Cravotto, and Miguel Ángel Odriozola worked on its restoration. In 1995, the Historic Quarter of the City of Colonia del Sacramento was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO - with it, the Basilica.
Antonios V — Google review
The building dates back to 1810 although the parish was founded back in the 1600s, one of the oldest in Uruguay. The building has undergone several reconstructions, evidenced by the extensive cemented walls. The architectural design looks quasi-Byzantine with touches of Gothic. It’s an unusually subdued, less grandiose, design for basilica from the 1800s. The bell towers are distinctive, both domed and are each topped with crosses. One is the Portuguese cross and the other Spanish; these must have been added in a later reconstruction to symbolize the opposing conquests of the two old competing kingdoms. The interior is simple, rounded ceilings rather vaulted. The cemented walls and white paint clearly show reconstruction. The high altar is rather distinctive as well. Instead of the common idol of Mary or Mother and Child, there’s a chalice-sun object, in the center of the sun is a cross. By the entrance is cove where one of the old pillars of the building is displayed.

Ancient Ruins
Ruins of the Convent of San Francisco, located near the Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse, date back to around 1690 and were left in ruins after a fire in 1704. The remaining walls offer a glimpse into the construction using rocks from that era. Adjacent to the lighthouse, these ruins provide an imposing sight with their thick walls and historical significance. Visitors can appreciate the historic stone construction and capture some impressive photographs.

The historic center is the most beautiful thing to see, it is free and open to the public. The city gate is a must-see site, there is a lot of history in the place, you can feel it. I have toured the city in one day, and you can take advantage of all the beautiful places it has to enjoy alone or with your family. I recommend exploring the historic center and going to the point to see the best sunset that the city offers. Specialty Museums
The Municipal Museum is located in an 18th-century stone building, originally constructed in 1795 and rebuilt by the Spanish in 1835. It offers a comprehensive look at the community's history from prehistoric to modern times. The exhibits cover various aspects such as local wars between the Portuguese and Spanish, archaeological findings, geological displays, religious artifacts, and cultural items.
🏛️🏛️🏛️ The two buildings are HISTORICAL LANDMARKS for the old walled Portuguese settlement in Colonia del Sacramento. Dating from 18th century, it was a Government House, an accommodation for visiting Viceroys and residence for colonial military leaders. It’s a typical colonial building, an apparently imposing structure in its day. It is now a museum. (THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE BUILDINGS ONLY, not the museum)

Given that Colonia is a popular day trip destination from Argentina, it is absolute madness that they do not accept payment by card (I understand why they don't want to accept Argentinian pesos in the current economic climate). Obviously noone visiting Uruguay for the day is going to be exchanging money just for a U$150 entrance fee. Can't speak to the quality of what is in the museums as could not get past the entrance!
James E — Google review
BEWARE IF YOU HAVE TATTOOS❗️❗️❗️❗️ Lack of professionalism, minimum decency, and respect from the lady with black short hair that sells the tickets. She mistreated me because I have tattoos. I had to listen to her opinions about people with tattoos and how low she thinks of them, during half of the visit. Like if people pay a museum ticket to listen to the staff’s opinion. I respect all opinions and know that not everyone likes tattoos and not everyone should. Totally okey. I am not running around with a tattoo machine trying to tattoo you against your will. I respect the valid opinion that you’re entitled to. But I didn't ask for it. I payed for a museum and I expect nothing else from you than doing your job and leave your opinions for other spaces. Instead, I had to listed how badly she thinks of me or anyone with tattoos and her reasons, through a curtain. Finally, after getting tired of it and totally ruining the experience my husband and I travel all the way from Germany for, I confronted her. She got aggressive and justified her opinion, because "she has opinions". Lady: your opinions are for tea time with your pals, not to talk trash about the only visitors in the museum to make them feel uncomfortable. Cannot believe Colonia pays someone to talk trash about a customer behind a curtain with her colleagues, then gets aggressive, and then runs away. Maybe the lady is still in 1800 stuck in the museum’s foundation date. If so, I recommend a comment from her superiors and an update in customer service, respect, and modern manners. Probably she still comments who “looks like a slave”, and who doesn’t. Colonia is lovely, and it’s people too. But everyone commenting and talking trash about you, your skin, and your choices, should not work in a place where millions of international tourist come everyday. Went and left a complaint in the tourist secretary office. Hopefully this reaches her superior someday. It’s so sadden, frustrating, and insulting.

Jeff W — Google review
I’d love to visit but they don’t accept cards or other currency. Most day visits don’t exchange for local cash. They would get more business otherwise.
Thomas D — Google review
Very nice. But, super grotesque. It's like a nightmare. This museum has many rooms and collects every animals and plants in the Island. Butterflies, birds, .. big dinosaur..it's enormous. There were also many historical items. I remember one painting that draws native people who are naked and surround one fire for preparing meals in the nature. Next to it, one brilliant chair and portrait of a man who wears western uniform brilliantly was exhibited. maybe he's brilliant leader of colonialism. To see them, i was surprised that such people killed such just innocent naked people and collected every animals and plants from this island here. Also surprised by a lion heart that puts and shows these portraits next to each other in this house. I guess to give such idea to visitors isn't the intention of this museum. But here unconsciously directly show such raw cruel history, so for me, it was really valuable experience. One huge bone of an ancient turtle(?)was also impressive. It suddenly appears in one room, exhibited without any showcase. Thats bone skin? is mossy and I had never seen such skin. This museum is so diffetent from other sophisticated(controlled)museum.

Discover Playa Ferrando, a picturesque beach located in a small bay just a short scooter ride from the city center. You can easily find your way there with a map from Thrifty Rentals, which also highlights other attractions in and around Colonia. Whether you visit in summer, spring, fall or winter, this beach offers the perfect setting to soak up the sun or take leisurely strolls. Buses are available for convenient access to this lovely spot.
Very nice little beach only minutes away from the town by car. There is an unofficial nudist (and gay friendly) side to it which is separate and secluded from the main beach and is very nice. If you get there early, you can get the shade of the big tree otherwise bring your umbrella. The water is lovely and shallow to refresh when you get too hot in the sun. On the main beach, there is a parador for supplies and that side is much bigger with loads of space if the nudist beach gets too busy.

Gaston C — Google review
Nice quiet beach away from the crowds.
Lewis M — Google review
(Translated by Google) I visited Playa Ferrando, located a few minutes from the center of Colonia del Sacramento, and the experience was… acceptable. It is not a beach that I would recommend as the best in the department of Colonia, since there are others that are much more attractive and in better condition. However, it has its charm if you are looking for a quiet and close place to hang out. The beach is relatively small, with little sand and limited capacity. It caught my attention that, despite having gone early in the morning, there were already several people enjoying the place. I imagine that many must be residents of the area or visitors coming from Colonia del Sacramento, considering that the city's beaches do not have a very good reputation. A negative detail was the amount of garbage I found on the beach, something that unfortunately deducts many points. Bottles, caps and other debris were scattered across the sand. This leads me to think that there are probably night parties there, since there is a parador very close by. It would be ideal if those who enjoy the beach at night also take care of keeping it clean. The view is nice and the environment has a quite natural vibe, but the cleanliness and maintenance leave a lot to be desired. I think, with a little more care and awareness, it could become a much more enjoyable place. This beach is a valid option if you are nearby, but don't expect to find a paradise beach. There are other options in the department that are more worth it if you are looking for clean sand and a well-kept environment.

(Translated by Google) The water is a luxury, the sand beautiful. I wish the municipality or those responsible for its cleaning would give more importance to it since the amount of dead fish did not allow one to spend the day there, the smell was putrid and the flies made you a tour guide. If they were in charge of cleaning it, it would be a more than key point for vacations or spending the afternoons.
