Architectural Buildings
Palacio Salvo is one of the tallest landmarks in the country and houses the Tango Museum, offices, and residences. It's located near Mercado del Puerto, a lively area filled with local cuisine and live music. Other recommended stops in the city include Palacio Legislativo, Teatro Solis, and Fortaleza for stunning views of the city. The gothic-style building was constructed by an Italian immigrant and opened in 1928.
Palacio Salvo is an iconic landmark in Montevideo and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in exploring the rich history of the city. This historic building not only offers incredible architecture but also provides one of the best views of Montevideo from its rooftop. The experience of seeing the city from such a high vantage point is truly breathtaking. The building organizes guided tours during the day, each lasting around 45 minutes. Some tours are conducted in English, which is convenient for international visitors. However, tickets for these tours are only available in person, so you’ll need to show up to secure your spot. The tour takes you through the most significant floors of the building and ends with a visit to the rooftop, where the panoramic views are worth every moment. One of the highlights of the tour is the Tango Museum located inside Palacio Salvo. It's fascinating to delve into the history of tango music and its cultural significance in the region. The museum adds an extra layer of depth to the visit, making it both educational and entertaining. Overall, Palacio Salvo is a historical gem that combines stunning architecture, cultural enrichment, and spectacular views. It’s an experience that captures the essence of Montevideo and is highly recommended for history and culture enthusiasts alike.

Another beautiful building where you can also rent flats. I had a great time visiting this building! It has some stunning views over montevideo!
Isabela — Google review
It was once the tallest building in South Americ👏👏👏, taller by 5 meters than its “twin”, Palacio Barolo, in Buenos Aires. Palacio Salvo is Montevideo’s most iconic architecture. *** It’s an Eclectic-Art Nouveau architecture, a style popularized in late 1900s to the turn of the 20th century. *** Eclectic architecture, while it has reminiscences of Renaissance, Gothic and Neoclassical, none of “typical” features of those architectures readily seen in Eclecticism. *** There’s a lot of curves, like petals of flower. The style is one that conveys flow and movement/motion rather than rigid lines and angular corners. As “twins”, built by the same Italian architect Mario Palanti, they were supposedly to “connect” Buenos Aires and Montevideo through their beacons at the tips of the buildings….BUT Alas the light beacons have never connected due to optic miscalculations.
A ( — Google review
Did the guided tour of the building, it was very unique and interesting learning about the history of it and why they changed from a hotel and modified other features. The tour also includes a room dedicated to the history of the famous tango song. Great way to spend 45 minutes of your time in the city.
Jozef W — Google review
Not accessible for wheelchairs! This building is really stunning - not only for its history and the one of the idea givers but also for its present-day use! Our two guides, Emily and Fausto were passionate and knowledgeable and applied most of the guiding skills I'm looking for in a guide. My compliments. They also answered questions and took good care of the participants. The ride in the historic elevator is a treat and the view from the roof is even more so. Watch out for tours in the evening. There are special ones with a drink for sunset...

Beautiful building anchoring Constitution Plaza in old town Montevideo. This building is impressive and imposing. Worth a stop on the tourist track.

Beautiful exterior architecture, but the entry fee for both the Edificio Palacio Salvo and the Tango Museum are $550 UYU pesos which is very expensive compared to other museums in the area, so decided not to go in. There is a view from the top included in the price.

The building is beautiful. I did a tour but it was entirely in Spanish. I had a hard time keeping up but the tour guide was very friendly. The view at the top is stunning!

Fortaleza del Cerro, also known as Fortress Hill, is a historic Spanish fortress located on the highest hill in Montevideo. Built in 1809 to defend against naval attacks, it now houses a military museum showcasing Uruguay's defense history. The fortress offers panoramic views of Montevideo Bay and features a 19th-century lighthouse.
Well worth the visit to this historic fortress, situated on a high hill overlooking Montevideo and the bay, canons pointed outwards. Tons of old guns, canons, mortars, swords, and other relics to see. Lots of information available about the history. Great place to take some photos, and a bit Montevideo sign right next to the fort. Cheap entry for just $2 USD, cash only.

Fortaleza del Cerro – Montevideo A must-visit when in Montevideo! Fortaleza del Cerro offers stunning panoramic views of the city and coastline—truly one of the best spots to take in the beauty of Uruguay’s capital. The historic fortress itself is impressive and filled with interesting military history and artifacts, giving you a glimpse into Uruguay's past. It's perched on the highest point in the city, so the vistas are absolutely worth the drive. Peaceful, scenic, and rich in history—a great spot for photos and reflection. Just be mindful of the area and go during daylight hours. Definitely recommend
Aracelis S — Google review
If you visit Montevideo and like panoramic views, this is an absolute must. Make sure day is clear and without rain and the view from here is amazing. Truly Historic and so many items have been kept there for that purpose. And it's absolutely free.

This is a lovely spot to visit to get great views of Montevideo. The fort itself has a pretty comprehensive military museum for $50 pesos. Go on a sunny day! No info in English. Free parking available.

Wonderful position with an open view on Montevideo, well organized museum with artifacts and explanations on Uruguay history. A must to visit, including the Cerro barrio and its riverside and Playa which I personally think are too underrated and not enough valued and promoted.

Flea & Street Markets
The Feria de Tristan Narvaja is a vibrant open-air flea market that takes place every Sunday along the street of the same name. Visitors can explore a wide variety of items, including antique silverware, second-hand books, and pre-loved fashion. While there are limited food options available, the market offers an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Additionally, unique finds such as artisanal beers and traditional wooden crafts can be discovered while strolling through the bustling stalls.
This weekly flea market is amazing! It is several blocks long and about 3 blocks wide. Bought a pair of New Balance athletic shoes for considerably less than in the stores here, and a really delicious flame grilled pancha from one of the street vendors. Bring cash but a lot of the vendors take debit cards, too. Can be pretty crowded so plan accordingly.
Mike P — Google review
A great way to spend a Sunday morning. You can spend hours exploring this flea market and not get bored. There’s something for everyone. It is absolutely enormous and there are so many trinkets to find. If you’re into fashion, there are so many vintage and second hand clothes to buy too. There is also a wide variety of food (chivito stalls, fresh produce, fruit and vegetables, cheese, brownies, etc). You cannot visit Montevideo and miss this flea market, it is simply a must. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in this market, it doesn’t exist!
James — Google review
A must when visiting Montevideo! We were able to get a great photo of the city and mate cups and bombillas as souvenirs here. They have everything you could want and was very fun Sunday activity.
Jenn L — Google review
I really enjoyed visiting the Sunday morning fair and recommend going early before it’s too crowded. 9 am is perfect! By 11 it’s filling up and by 12 it’s uncomfortably full on the main street. Lots of local vendors with interesting souvenirs, as well as books, food, antiques, household goods, and super random things as well.
Rebecca L — Google review
This flea market is crazy huge. You can find anything here. Book lovers paradise - streets of books. Fine art, housewares, home decor, clothes, pet supplies, tools, treasures and junk It's all here. Find the papas rellenas vendor! We got there at 10:30 and by 2pm it was too crowded for us to casually explore.
Con C — Google review
This market is huge! Such a great place to wander around on a Sunday afternoon. So many cool treasures, food, music, art, books, etc…
Emmett S — Google review
The flea market took over an entire neighborhood! They have everything here, and it is a MUST visit!
David R — Google review
It is hard to describe what this street market is like. Streets blocked in this neighborhood. All types of fresh food choices like oversized farmers market is only the start. Homemade items, things you use around the house, books, cheese and meats and prepared foods to enjoy as you walk around. Don't forget to check out second hand booths

Art museum
Museums
Nestled in the charming neighborhood of Prado, Museo Juan Manuel Blanes is a municipal art museum housed in a grand 1870 villa. It boasts an extensive collection of Uruguayan artworks spanning different eras. The museum pays homage to the renowned Uruguayan portrait artist and Realist painter, Juan Manuel Blanes, also known as the "Painter of the Homeland." Visitors can admire his significant works alongside pieces by other influential artists like Pedro Figari and Rafael Barradas.
A wonderful collection of the works of Juan Manuel Blanes, a self-taught Uruguayan painter born in a turbulent period of the country's history who left an indelible mark on art through his dedication to capturing the essence of South American history and gaucho life. Blanes, rooted in the formal academic style of 19th-century European painting, brought a uniquely American perspective to his work. His extensive documentation of major historical events in Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile, exemplified in monumental pieces like "The Battle of Caseros," showcased not only his commitment to historical accuracy but also his incorporation of human detail, influenced by the emerging naturalism of the 19th century. Beyond historical depictions, Blanes explored the romanticized world of gauchos, portraying their lives with an idealized lens. While striving for accuracy in his historical paintings, his gaucho images romanticized the independent, free-spirited lifestyle, often overlooking the harsh realities faced by these figures. Blanes' career unfolded across Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Europe, with a notable stay in Chile in 1873. His legacy lives on in the dichotomy of his meticulously detailed historical narratives and the idealized, romanticized portrayals of gaucho life, making him a significant figure in the artistic tapestry of South America.
Nicholas M — Google review
5 stars for the room with the Blanes paintings, amazing artist! Some very iconic paintings of the history of Uruguay. 1 star for the other art exhibits, not my style. The Japanese garden is located behind the museum and also worth a visit.
Garrett F — Google review
A fascinating place to visit! It was so interesting to see what used to be a hacienda-style home for Uruguay's wealthy families. The architecture and preserved rooms really take you back in time. I especially loved the peaceful courtyard with its beautiful fountain and koi fish—it was serene and lovely. The Japanese garden is also a nice surprise, offering a tranquil space to enjoy nature. During my visit, there was an impressive exhibition featuring Uruguayan women artists, which added a special cultural touch. A must-see museum if you're in Montevideo!
Aracelis S — Google review

Llama A — Google review
Beautiful museum and completely free. Each room is better than the next and the staff is very informative. (If you understand Spanish) Buy something from the gift shop to keep this place open. Unfortunately the Japanese garden is closed on rainy days so keep that in mind.
Maria C — Google review
This is an art museum on the same grounds as the Japanese gardens. One room has large impressive works of classic art. Another has a temporary exhibit -- clothing and textiles when we went there. Can't beat the price... $0 A worthwhile destination!

De los Pocitos Beach, located in Montevideo, is a popular city beach known for its lively boardwalk, golden sands, and picturesque promenade. It offers visitors the chance to unwind and enjoy activities such as beach volleyball, sunbathing, and leisurely strolls against the backdrop of the glistening waters of the River Plate.
This beach is very beautiful and clean, which cannot be said about the water. I had no desire to swim in this brown water. In addition, in Montevideo there are constant cool winds (even in summer) and if you come out of the water wet, you will be cold. I advise you to take a large towel to wrap yourself up well. In the evening you can meet many beautiful girls and guys walking along the Rambla

Nestled in the heart of Ciudad Vieja, the Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral stands as a stunning testament to neoclassical architecture and rich history. Established in 1790 on the site of an earlier parish church, this magnificent Roman Catholic cathedral serves as the spiritual hub for Montevideo's Catholic community. With its striking twin bell towers and grand central dome, it captures the essence of colonial elegance.
It's the most beautiful church I've ever been to in my entire life. It's spectacular. Lots of works of art in sculpture.

The principal cathedral for the City of Montevideo — a beautiful and serene place for contemplation, prayer and worship. Accessible from the Plaza de la Constitución (aka Plaza Matriz).

Entry Free of charge - donations welcome Since I love churches, this one has pleased my eye. The church was named "Matriz" antes. It's a Catholic church which deserves to be visited. Two things struck my mind: in front of one of the side altars a modern sculpture from presumably lasered glass was erected and second, in the main Altar area the Uruguayan Flag was shown alongside what I recognised as the Vatican flag.
Sarah J — Google review
Very nice cathedral in the city that is well maintained and impressive in it's architecture. Well worth the quick stop in just to see it.

This place is amazing. The guided tour is so informative. Our tour guide is bilingual, which is great for none Spanish speakers. All the staff are really friendly and create a great atmosphere. The building is so beautiful and mystical, with many surprises. After the tour finished, I was able to walk around and take photos. I highly recommend that everyone visit this Castillo, you won't be disappointed.
Kitty — Google review
The architecture is not as great as the story of the man who created the building. The guide knows a lot and seems really friendly, but he spends way too much time talking about symbols. Yes, there’re symbols everywhere, but there’s no need to pay attention to all of them. Unfortunately, the building is only partially restored and there are many parts that need a lot of work yet. I imagine that visiting this building can be a nice thing for architects, but for most of us the most interesting part is the story behind it.

We did not have time to enter but we did see examples of the artists work on a nearby building across from the entrance. Our tout guide said that the artist was quite influential internationally. Not the style of art I appreciate though I am afraid. For fans of this work, the museum should definitely be on the visit list when in montevideo.

An interesting museum showcasing works by Torres Garcia, a Uruguayan-Spanish artist, theorist, and author who made a large impact internationally. The museum consists of 4 floors that one can visit. He's known for toys that can be configured in multiple ways.

Nice museum with 3 floors but each fairly small. I was given a sheet of info in English which helped as no signs are in English. I paid 200 entry which I think was worth it for a short stop.

I really enjoyed my time in this museum. This style is different from what I normally go for, but I have grown to like and appreciate it. Before coming here, I saw one piece in Bellas Artes museum in Buenos Aires. There are many interesting pieces of art and wooden toys. The building has a nice layout of 4 floors. The gift shop has a nice selection of items. I highly recommend.

The Museo Torres García is located in the historic Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) of Montevideo where unusual portraits of historical icons and cubist paintings akin to Picasso's paintings, painted by Joaquín Torres García are exhibited. The museum was established by Manolita Piña Torres, the widow of Torres Garcia after his death in 1949 who also set up the García Torres Foundation, a private non-profit organization which organizes the paintings, drawings, original writings, archives, objects and furniture designed by the painter as well as the photographs, magazines and publications related to him....

Museo Andes 1972 is a private museum that opened in 2013, dedicated to the tragic story of the 1972 Andes plane crash. The museum features exhibits that recount the details of the crash and pay tribute to its victims and survivors. It aims to raise awareness about this national tragedy and the struggle for survival in one of the world's tallest and coldest mountains.
Things to know: They only take cash for entry in person or you can buy in advance online with card. Very convenient, but know just incase you were wanting to pay with card at entry. We really found this museum very interesting! We knew of the story of this accident but didn’t have any details. Recommend! We enjoyed learning more about the story of these brave kids who went through something so tragic and the museum is done in a very respectful way.

This place is awesome, such a beautiful tribute to those who died and a string reminder of the human spirt. Felt immersed in the events of 1972 and would highly recommend

A museum tribute to those who perished and those who survived an unimaginable catastrophe of Uruguayan Air Force flight 571 in 1972. With 40 passengers (Uruguayan rugby team and their families/friends) and 5 crew on board, the world have thought they all perished in a crash in the Andes at the border of Chile and Western Argentina. But after 79 days, two survivors surfaced miraculously in a Chilean town alerting international rescue. In all, 16 survivors were rescued. *** As such, the museum is an implicit exultation of the human will to survive against all odds. *** It is also a tribute to leadership that ensured survival of those lived through the initial catastrophic crash. The three men (Señores Parrado, Canessa and Vizintin) showed extraordinary valor to organize the survivors and head for an expedition of unknown outcome… but headed on for everyone’s sake…👏👏👏.

Amazing insight into the most awful tragedy. There was English translation throughout (don’t take that for granted in South America!) Museum was at over three small floors and included clean toilets. There was a ‘cold’ simulator but sadly this wasn’t working when we were there. Could have spent longer here as so interesting but it was end of day and hot (we were getting thirsty!)
Zoe A — Google review
Great experience, super passionate host that helps you understand the challenges the group faced. Cool new exhibit where you get to experience the -18 temperatures on top of the Andes. Pay with cash.
Morgan B — Google review
What an incredible museum. They’ve balanced it so well to not only highlight what the survivors went through and their stories, but also to pay equal respect to those that didn’t survive. I’d recommend this museum to everyone who has the opportunity to visit. I noticed previous reviews mentioned that payment was only cash or pre purchased online tickets but that has since changed. It is now cash or they have a QR code where you can pay via PayPal on arrival.
Leanne R — Google review
What a fantastic museum. Such a tragic event which turned into a story of bravery and perseverance against the most difficult of odds. The owners have done an incredible job of telling the story through videos, interactive displays and historic memorabilia. They also speak about it with such respect and passion. If you're in montevideo you should definitely visit!

The Museo del Carnaval in Montevideo is a vibrant museum showcasing the annual carnival with its extravagant costumes, masks, and open-air stage. It offers a comprehensive overview of the colorful event, featuring past parade floats, costumes, and an evocative photographic exhibition documenting the evolution of celebrations. The museum provides insight into Uruguay's capital city's 40-day-long carnival celebration with drum troupes, samba dancing, and murgas across 16 neighborhoods.
Small and simple museum that reviews the interesting history of the Carnival in Montevideo. There is also a section dedicated to Carlos Paez Vilaró and the influence of the carnival and its culture in his works of art.

Unassuming entrance with displays and information on the history and story of Carnaval in Montevideo. There are guides in 4 languages at the entry desk and it is a nominal entrance fee ($150 or about 4USD). Most of the museum is in Spanish with maybe a quarter to a third also having English. Good place to see traditional costumes and see some film of performances. There is a stage and seating in the back where performances can be held. Was here on Ash Wednesday so they were presumably closing up that portion for the season.
Benjamin G — Google review
A fun museum to visit and learn about the history of Carnaval and see the different costumes throughout history. For 150 UYU, it's well worth the price. Be forewarned that all the signage is in Spanish and compared to other museums, it's on the smaller side.

Lovely museum, I spent an hour here. Parallel Halls, one of which is devoted to the flamboyant Carnival costumes and the other has a large screen playing scenes from previous carnivals as well as old photos and other memorabilia. Right at the back, outside, there is a small open air stage with seating. They are using this for carnival shows, next one starting at 9.00pm tomorrow, 29th Feb.

It’s quite a big market with a large variety of shops, not just agricultural shops. You can still buy agricultural products like fruit, veg and meat there, but they also have clothing, toy and other stores. There is a nice food court and coffee shops to sit.

It is a nice place with some fruit & vegetable stores, and many other stores. It leaves an impression of a big supermarket more than an agricultural market. Also, the fruits on the street and small fruit stores are better and cheaper than here. We were planning to see a real market and buy some fruits, but end up coming out empty handed.

Fans of the American actress Mae West (“Too much of a good thing is…terrific!”) will find this revitalized historic marketplace to be a spectacle worth a visit (at least once). Uruguay has come a long way since being a relatively poor country in the 1980’s, witness this palace of contemporary consumption. There are a variety of stores, places to eat, bars and places to hang out. Prior to its rebirth as an urban shopping venue, it was a collection point for farm produce. I remember being able to drive into the building, where there were stacks of fruit and vegetable crates. Now you can buy US$1500 per bottle wines at Iber if you have bank. Nice meat market and “chicken boutique” (I’m not kidding!). Have a chivito in the food court and top it off with an ice cream sundae! The neighborhood of the market has also been upgraded, though it retains a bit of the urban grit that characterized its now distant past. Convenient parking out front but bring some small bills to tip the attendants. Les Halles in Paris are long gone, but Mercado Agricola still lives.
Paul N — Google review
A really nice market and place to go try new food, buy your groceries for the day, fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and so much more. There are mini-markets, a pharmacy, two nice coffee shops, various fast food places, pizza places and a whole bunch of other choices for your lunch or dinner. Is also a nice place to visit for a while, it’s big and spacious. It has a place for kids, however it’s not the best place to bring kids specifically, it’s more of a family plan. The only downside is that it is a noisy place when it’s crowded, acoustics don’t help the space when there too many people talking together.

It made for a pleasant morning walk to wander out to the lighthouse at the end of this tiny peninsula. Not really any walkway per-se as we walked along the road and on the grass by the sides.

A functioning, small lighthouse. The place is too small to get here specially, but if you are walking somewhere nearby, it is worth stopping by to see the views of the bay from the lighthouse. The only downside is that it is often very windy at the top, it is better to be warmly dressed. Also, there are nice and friendly people working here who are ready to tell stories about this place. Not far from the lighthouse, we saw a whole flock of parrots. It costs 35 ur. pesos.

🗼 Punta Carretas Lighthouse – Montevideo’s Southern Light Located on the rocky edge of Punta Brava, the Punta Carretas Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Brava) has been watching over Montevideo’s southern coast since 1876. This elegant cylindrical tower of carved stone rises 21 meters above the sea, serving both as a historical monument and an active aid to navigation. Originally built to guide ships through a treacherous stretch of coastline, the lighthouse was electrified in 1962, though its current light pattern — a flash every 10 seconds, alternating between white and red — was already established in 1948. The signal helps vessels safely reach Banco Inglés, Puerto del Buceo, and the Santa Lucía River. Today, the lighthouse is still in full operation, maintained by Uruguay’s maritime authorities. It is considered a National Historical Monument, not only for its utility, but for its role in shaping Montevideo’s maritime identity. 🧭 Cultural and Symbolic Context Punta Carretas was once called "Punta Brava" for a reason: rocky, unlit, and dangerous. The lighthouse gave the area a new life, a new identity — and eventually, its name. From the early 20th century, the neighborhood began to grow around this signal of safety. More than a navigational tool, the lighthouse became a symbol of the city’s relationship with the sea — a place where nature, architecture, and urban rhythm meet. On windy days or during sunsets, locals and travelers come here for peace, views, and photographs. 🛠 Architectural and Technical Details Height of tower: 21 m (69 ft) Construction: masonry tower with a rectangular white keeper's house Material: local stone, red and white painted iron lantern Lighting pattern: alternating red and white flashes every 10 seconds Range of light: approximately 15 nautical miles (~28 km) Operational status: Active (as of 2024) Electricity installed: 1962 The narrow spiral staircase inside the tower leads to a circular gallery, from where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline, Río de la Plata, and migratory seabirds. ✅ Visitor Information General access: Free and open-air. The lighthouse itself is accessible on foot from the Rambla. Tower entry: Occasionally open to the public; modest fee (under 50 UYU) may apply. Best time to visit: Late afternoon to sunset — for golden light and seabird spotting. Accessibility: The base is accessible via paved footpaths, but the tower climb requires physical mobility. Getting there: 15–20 min walk from Punta Carretas Shopping or Parque Rodó via Rambla Gandhi. Whether you're a lover of lighthouses, a photographer, a walker, or someone who enjoys peaceful moments by the water, the Punta Carretas Lighthouse is a must-see stop. It combines history, architecture, and the unique geography of Montevideo’s southernmost point — a quiet icon that still watches over the sea.
Maria K — Google review
The Punta Carretas Lighthouse in Montevideo is a charming coastal landmark that combines history, beauty, and stunning views. Built in the 19th century, it has guided ships safely along the Uruguayan coast for generations. The lighthouse sits on a rocky point where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic, creating a picturesque setting that is especially beautiful at sunset. Visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views of the coastline, the ocean, and the city in the distance—a perfect spot for photography and quiet reflection. The surrounding area of Punta Carretas is also pleasant to explore, with coastal paths and nearby cafes that make for a relaxing visit. While the lighthouse itself is relatively small, its historic charm and breathtaking location make it a highlight for anyone traveling to Montevideo. It’s a peaceful yet inspiring stop that captures both the maritime heritage and natural beauty of Uruguay.

(Translated by Google) Very loose. Luckily I went because it was nearby and not because I really wanted to visit it. The museum is nothing more than a collection of glasses, of all sizes and colors, that Nacional has won throughout its history. The worst thing is that the windows are so dirty that it is difficult to see many things. The glasses are very tightly packed together, which gives the impression that none of them are important. I would tell you that if you want to know something about the history of Nacional, it is best to take a guided tour, where you will see much more historical material about the club. (Original) Muy flojo.

It’s a very nice food market with a variety of vendors inside. You can try different South American food. They also have themed days and weeks at times. My food was great and affordable. The service was fast, friendly and efficient. It is child friendly. There is plenty of seating available and each person at the table can order what they like from the different vendors. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The market is also bigger than I expected from the street view.

Very cool little food court with nice variety of food. Something for every taste: burgers, tacos/burritos, sandwiches, bowls/sushi and your standard grilled meat. Plus ice cream and a bakery of course. My wife and I both had burritos and they were excellent.

Tender chicken (5/5) (660 peso/2 person) 2. Croquettes Espinaca (spinach croquettes) (4/5) Also they have a lot of options for burgers and ice cream. Like dry coriander, dry Tulsi(basil), biriyani masala, tikka masala, Garam masala, basmati rice etc. Please visit and try out several options. Recommend.

Nestled within the stunning 19th-century Palacio Heber Jackson, the Museo del Gaucho and Currency offers a captivating glimpse into the life of South America's iconic gauchos. This museum beautifully illustrates their profound bond with horses and showcases an array of artifacts that reflect their rich traditions. Visitors can admire exquisite collections featuring traditional clothing, intricate horse gear, and ornate silver spurs alongside handmade leather items. The museum also houses a fascinating section dedicated to currency and accounting history on another floor.
Museum in opulent 19th-century mansion, with statues, art, furniture & displays on ranching life. The South American cowboy, or “gaucho” is the focus of one collection at this museum, and the other depicts the history of Uruguay’s currency. This modest museum is housed in a marble showcase with incredible archetectural features. I can't add enough pictures to do it justice. Brought over as ballast these remarkable buildings are the true history of Montevideo. The Gaucho museum houses remnants of the legacy of Uruguayans. The craftsmanship, no - artisanship of a bolo, a knife, mere horse tact meticulously adorned into objects of fine art is unmatched. These physcial objects of the people's lives, carefully placed, and left to light their lives again as you pass by. Stop, reflect and appreciate this once awesome way of life.

We came across the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda by accident, while out on our own walking tour of Montevideo, and it was an interesting and enjoyable visit. We were welcomed by the staff and encouraged to explore the many exhibits, which describe the lifestyle and legacy of the South American gauchos, and we were particularly impressed by the level of detail provided, including the expansive collections of horse gear. Housed in the head office of the Banco República, the museum also has a substantial section detailing the development of currency units in Uruguay. It’s an eclectic space that offers a unique glimpse of Uruguay’s rich history.
Path F — Google review
A museum primarily about the culture and history of gauchos seems incongruous inside the magnificent neoclassical bank main hall, but who cares!? Free. Friendly staff. Nice bathrooms. And it made me curious to learn more.
James L — Google review
Excellent presentation of the history of gauchos in Uruguay, paired with another museum within a museum of Uruguay’s historical currency and coinage. The main banking hall of the Banco de la República del Uruguay (BROU) has been transformed into a delightful series of galleries depicting various aspects of Uruguay’s iconic gauchos, their history and culture. Cleverly, the old teller stations within the banking hall contain the museum’s coinage and currency exhibits — So the two museum collections are kept separated physically and visually, while sharing the one large hall. For the physically handicapped: A handicapped accessible ramp is located on Zabala (the bank staff entrance) — you will need to identify yourself as a visitor to the Museum and security will call a staff member to escort you to the museum hall. Handicapped visitors are encouraged to call ahead of time or make an on-line reservation so that a staff member is available and able to assist you as needed.

The Museo de Historia del Arte offers a diverse collection of art and artifacts from various ancient civilizations, including prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Iranian, and pre-Columbian cultures. Visitors can explore the daily life and customs of these ancient societies through original archaeological pieces and replicas of significant historical value. The museum's east wing houses an impressive display of art and artifacts from around the world, spanning over 3,000 years of human innovation.
Centrally located and FREE for everybody. Lots of artifacts although some aren't original. Somehow that doesn't detract from the pleasure and you can learn from them too. Lift or stairs to and from lower ground floors. WCs. Information desk with a warm welcome from the staff. Thank you.

The Museo de Historia del Arte (MuHAr) is a hidden cultural gem located in the west wing of the Intendencia building, right in the heart of Montevideo. Entry is free for everyone, and visitors are welcome to explore two underground levels filled with beautifully curated collections from across human history. The museum showcases high-quality reproductions and original artifacts from Prehistoric times, Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, Classical Greece and Rome, as well as Islamic, African, and Asian civilizations. One of the most striking features is a real Egyptian mummy of a priestess named Esoeris, displayed in a specially designed crypt. The second level focuses on Pre-Columbian cultures, including archaeological pieces from Uruguay and an important collection of African art. The galleries are modern and spacious, and the atmosphere is calm — perfect for slow, reflective exploration. In addition to the permanent exhibition, MuHAr offers temporary exhibits, educational workshops, and a small research library and archive that supports students and researchers in history, archaeology, and art. The museum is fully accessible, with elevators, lockers, and QR codes throughout the galleries. Guided tours are available on Saturdays at 4 PM by prior request. Whether you’re a curious traveler, a history enthusiast, or just looking for something inspiring and peaceful to do in the city, this museum is absolutely worth your time.

The Port Market, housed in a grand 19th-century building that was once the city's train station, is a bustling hub of activity in Montevideo. Despite rising prices due to an increase in cruise ship passengers, the market remains a vibrant and atmospheric area filled with local crafts, food stalls, and restaurants. Visitors can enjoy huge racks of barbecued meat at the Parilla restaurants while watching musicians and performers entertain the crowds.
Authentic Montevideo experience. The Port Market is full of energy, with smoky grill aromas, loud conversations, and a very local vibe. Tons of tasty meat options—especially if you’re into parrilla. Great place to grab a glass of wine or beer and watch the action. There are also several souvenir shops around, and it’s perfect to combine with a walk through the Old Town. A bit touristy, but still worth the visit.
Sergey V — Google review
Very nice experience.... This is an old-fashioned market. There is no doubt about it. Just visiting its outdoor area and surrounding its venue, we can realize we are in the Ciudad Vieja (Old City), a few meters away from the port of Montevideo. Inaugurated in October 10, 1868, both the English and the Montevidean newspapers from those days referred to the size of the works managed by the Spanish businessman Pedro Sáenz de Zumarán and a group of Uruguayan entrepreneurs. Its construction, in the English style, was carried out at the Union Foundry workshops in Liverpool. Such professionalism was also seen in the assembling of the venue, a process in which professionals from England took part. The European architecture takes us back to those days in which everything was auctioned inside. Vegetables, fruit and meat coming from the inland areas, as well as African slaves and other illegal imports from old Europe, were sold there.
Aiju A — Google review
The place dates back to the late 1800s, when it was reputedly the largest market in South America. It’s in a great location with its proximity to the Port of Montevideo. The structure is impressive. The interior shell of beams and arches is made of steel (and maybe iron), manufactured in Liverpool. 🏛️ On one end is a clock tower, very much like those one sees in historical train stations in England. 🏛️ Several of the supporting posts are ornately designed, reminiscent on the late 1800s European industrial buildings. From the 1970s, Ciudad Vieja’s Mercado has shifted to eateries and specialty shops. It remains so today. The eating establishments features Uruguayan tradition of Parrilladas. The aroma of grilling meat pervades the entire building 😎

The port market is a must visit if you’re in Montevideo. But Palenque restaurant really raises the bar. Great food, great cooking, great stuff and the rest is for you to enjoy. Don’t miss the…sweet black pudding, the stuffed red peppers, the red tuna…just to name a few…we will be back soon!

One of the dumbest security rules i ever seen, like they take from you minor thing i understand lighters knives and dangerous things are prohibited but taking an expensive perfume that it is 150ml from me and throwing it its ridiculously stupid no airport does this? The problem after you pass the security you can buy even 300ml perfumes and take them with you to airplane, so what's the point of these stupid rules and the dumb security they apply the rules blindly Even in USA airports, the most strict security they dont do stupid rules like these then when i try to explain to him he says these Uruguay? Are you really proud of stupidity? Im pretty sure Uruguayans are not happy with these rules either. Many people told me about how bad the Uruguay airport is. Just read the 1 stars reviews. it's the same stories. It looks like the authorities dont listen and dont care about Uruguay international image, and they dont listen, not just me complaining

This was a small airport at the time I came through it, but the new site as shown was being built and it has a lot of potential. The part of the airport that I experienced was good and the personnel were competent in the ability to do their job. I had to go through the arrival and departure procedures and that went without any problems. I was allowed to go to the waiting areas for the frequent flyers. The restrooms were decent and clean when I was there. There were plenty of kid friendly restaurants when I went through last.

Palacio Legislativo, a neoclassical building that serves as the home of the Uruguayan parliament, is a symbol of national pride and democratic values. Declared a National Historic Monument in 1975, this monumental structure was inaugurated in 1925 to commemorate Uruguay's independence. The palace features luxurious offices and houses numerous masterpieces by renowned artists such as Pedro Blanes and Jose Luis Zorrilla.
A really beautiful and significant building, this palace really stands out in the city. You can see it from over a mile away due to the road being completely straight. It has some unique architectural features and really ornate top. You can get some lovely pictures when its quiet, as its set in an open area. Well worth a walk around.

It’s an iconic architecture NOT ONLY FOR URUGUAY (and Montevideo) BUT FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD… a Greco-Roman Eclectic architecture built at turn of 1900s. *** it is a UNIQUE edifice that has a Rectangular Skylight Well instead of the usual classic dome such as the Argentinian Congreso OR the USA Capitol Building.👏👏👏. Truly a remarkable building. It remains a functioning house of the LEGISLATIVE BRANCH of the Uruguayan Republic since 1925.

The English tour by Natalia was excellent! Great level of detail and interaction with persons from USA, MVD and China. We’ve recently been on other bldg tours in MVD and Buenos Aires. Their content was very limited in comparison! Plus the building is super detailed and in great shape. Some of the original ‘water glass’ is still in the windows. Amazing sculptures inside and out; unparalleled quality of stonework in several countries and you have to go into and or use the library there - such a warm welcoming place. Go! Just go. It’s only 3 dollars US or 140 pesos UY. Great Examples of: Stained glass Karyatids Woodwork Stonework Mosaics Plaster art (in light wells!) Metalworking Architectural details Paintings Bas relief Living example of good governance! Yay, Natalia! I only wish the people of USA would follow the ‘Pueblo Uruguayo’ and elect progressives and search for more peace!

While exploring inner part of the building we wanted to see the library which was upstairs. We asked the seguridad lady if we can enter and watch it and she directed us to go to the excursion. The price of it was 3$ per person but solo in cash and we didn’t have it, but the staff let us in for free. Then, we explore not only the library but congress halls and architecture with professional of his field, our guide. He spoke in 3 languages which was español, brasileño y inglés. He detailed the whole history that surrounded us inside. Muchas Gracias!
Mariа P — Google review
What an amazing building! From the outside it’s really impressing . But we’ve booked a guided tour and it was breathtaking beautiful. Our English speaking guide was absolutely brilliant. She showed us nearly every important part of the building. The great hall, the original constitution documents, the Library, both chambers of the parliament: the House of Commons and the chamber of Senators. She was able not only to describe all the exterior but also detailed information about the country’s political system. In one hour we got essential information about architecture, politics and arts in a most entertaining way. A clear must see for just 140 Peso .
Andreas R — Google review
The building is not magnificent, but it has its charm. Take into account that you must visit the place with a guided tour (they don’t let you go inside on your own, unless you go to the library). The guided tour lasts about 1:30 hours, which is perfect, as the guide (Ana, in my case) explained everything in detail. I must say that it was inspiring listening to her talking about democracy with so much passion. Don’t expect to go there waiting for an outstanding building. The right approach to this visit is to go there and try to understand why this small country is just the way it is.

A beautiful parliament building inside and out. There is a very worthwhile tour for 140 pesos for tourists and free for locals. The building was built with beautiful local marble from local and Italian architects and craftsmen, it took 17 years to finish. Inside the most impressive hall, you will find the constitution and the declaration of independence. Our guide in English was with Mario and he was an amazing tour guide.

The museum features items such as pistols, revolvers, clothing, and a unique necklace made from Fructuoso Rivera's hair.
Former residence of the first president of Uruguay, general Fructuoso Rivera. The exposition covers a period from establishing Uruguay as an independent state till the first decade of the XX century. I'm not sure why online it says it's free, but it's 250 and you have to create an account through a QR code and blabla. Honestly, museums in MV are way too expensive for what they are... And it should be much clearer on their website how much it costs.

A museum that is likely a treasure trove for anyone interested in Uruguay history with at least some basic knowledge. There is a large collection of historic paintings and portraits, as well as various objects (eg, swords, old guns, uniforms, etc). As someone without any knowledge of Uruguayan history or key figures it was interesting, but the collections are not sufficiently curated to even come away with a rudimentary time line.

History enthusiast. I WAS excited to visit. Rather than accept the 200 peso bill in my pocket, they required I connect to the internet, create an account, upload passport information (which is none of their business), and purchase the ticket through my new account. I tried my hardest because I wanted to see it. However, the website was garbage and would not accept my card. After 20+ minutes of playing this game I gave up and left. We only have so much time in the city and couldn’t afford to waste it. Very disappointed.

Could not buy a ticket. Created an account and entered our information. Tried to buy online and there was no option to purchase a ticket on the ticket website. We then downloaded the app and still could not buy a ticket. We ended up leaving and not visiting the museum even though we had the pesos to pay to enter the museum. The process is not efficient and very disappointing.
Linds — Google review
The museum has an interesting collection of stuff pertaining to Uruguayan history. I particularly liked the paintings of historical events and battles. However, the items are not organized very well and the only context is some very long tedious Spanish explanations. (My Spanish is near fluent but these were hard to read.) But this is a worthwhile place to visit if you enjoy paintings of historical events.

Nestled in the heart of Montevideo's Old City, Fuente De La Plaza Matriz is a stunning architectural gem that draws visitors with its classic design and intricate sculptural details. As you stroll along the pedestrian Sarandi, you'll find this beautiful fountain surrounded by lush trees that offer a refreshing shade on sunny days. The square itself buzzes with life, featuring outdoor dining options where you can savor local cuisine while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.
On July 18, 1871, a marble fountain was inaugurated in Montevideo in the Plaza de la Constitución, coinciding with the start-up of drinking water services to the city. This project was managed by a private company that had the concession for the supply of water to the city, and the construction of the fountain was a condition established in the clauses of the contract. The fountain was built by Italian sculptor Juan Ferrari in 1871, under the initiative of alchemist and businessman Francisco Piria. This work not only celebrates the introduction of drinking water in Montevideo, but also stands as an artistic monument and a significant historical symbol for the city. The fountain also features seven legends in relief marble and a granite plaque with commemorative inscriptions, among which the following stand out: «August 25, 1825/The Eastern Republic of Uruguay/declares itself free and independent» «July 18, 1830 / Oath of the Constitution» «Governmental sanction/ December 4, 1867» «Businessmen/ Ambrosio Plácido Lezica/Lanús Brothers/Enrique Fynn» «Legislative Sanction/April 29, 1868» «Company Engineer/Federico Newman» «April 19, 1825 / Cry of Freedom given by the 33 Orientals»

(Translated by Google) It's a small square but quite peaceful and relaxing. The most striking feature is the fountain, which has some minor damage from the passage of time but retains its beauty. There are plenty of nearby activities, such as museums and shops, making it a nice place to sit and rest after a bit of sightseeing. A little more vegetation would make it more pleasant, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a nice place. (Original) Es una plaza pequeña pero bastante trabquila y relajante. Delicious food and great service! I would highly recommend this place to anyone. My boyfriend and I ordered the wedge salad (him), the pear and blue cheese salad (me), the chicken milanesa with fried rice (him), and the corvina al papillon (me). I wish I had more time in Montevideo to try some of their other dishes.

The service and atmosphere was truly excellent and I really appreciated that they have fluent English speakers on staff. I wish the food was as good as the service. The lamb rack was insanely overcooked after I asked for it to be medium rare and the couscous was dry with an overwhelming onion flavor. No balance to be found. The bruschetta and beer were great though.

Dropped in for a super late lunch, almost dinner tbh after doing some tourist things. Our party if 3 shared 3 items chickpea salad rib eye potato gnocchi When I tell you, we cleared all them plates. The steak was perfectly cooked That chickpea salad was the crowd favorite. I could eat that daily and be happy with life The gnocchi was equally sumptuous. I’m bummed we didn’t come back for dinner. We were elsewhere having the worst meal of my life.

What a delectable dinner! It was my last meal in Uruguay and I couldn’t decide between the Milanesa or the ribeye. The waitress was so cool and organised for an entree serve of the milanesa so I could enjoy both. I have to say that the kitchen absolutely crucified the steak to the extreme of well done but I still had a pleasant time especially after a few sav blancs

José Gervasio Artigas, national hero and revered Father of the Nationhood of Uruguay🇺🇾🇺🇾🇺🇾. He was deeply involved in liberation of Uruguay during the Wars of Independence from Spain that even Argentina made him an ally for their own independence as well. In fact, he fought with them in the May Revolution of 1810 that led to Argentina’s independence in 1816. Artigas’ fight for Uruguay was a little more complicated. He and his compatriots have succeeded against Spain for most Uruguay except for Montevideo which was invaded by the United Kingdoms of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves in 1816. By 1820, his forces had suffered great losses leading to his capture and banishment to Paraguay. Uruguayan patriots continued the fight, ultimately succeeding and Uruguay became independent in 1828. Artigas remained exiled until his death in 1850. His remains were repatriated in 1850 to a Montevideo Cemetery. In 1977, his mausoleum, underneath his equestrian statue, was finally completed and he finally rested their. ARTIGAS HAS LASTING LEGACY AS A SOLDIER AND STATESMAN. As a statesman, he is a staunch democrat and federalist, opposing monarchism and centralism (the 4 principles of ARTIGUISM)👏👏👏👏 *** He is enshrined with his monuments in many countries around the world including Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, Greece, Ecuador, Romania, Bulgaria, India, and the USA (DC, NYC, NJ, MN).

We just had dinner here and we were amazed by the quantity and the quality of the food! We took the traditional BBQ for 2, and 3 or 4 ppl could have eaten it perfectly. It came with fries and we added some aubergine. We ordered a bottle of wine and the total amount was very decent for the amount of food we got. I would totally recommend this place. A Delightful Culinary Experience at Tannat - Parillada in Montevideo I recently had the pleasure of dining at Tannat - Parillada in Montevideo, not once but twice during my stay in the city. Each visit was a delightful culinary journey. The first time, I savored a 'parillada mixta', a mixed grill that was a true testament to the chef's prowess. The second time, I opted for a sumptuous Bife Steak accompanied by Morcilla (blood sausage), each dish cooked to perfection, as evidenced by the photos I've attached. What struck me most was the pricing - surprisingly reasonable, especially compared to my experiences in Buenos Aires. Dining in Montevideo turned out to be much more wallet-friendly, nearly half the cost of what I'd spent in Buenos Aires. This was an unexpected revelation. The service at Tannat - Parillada was exceptional - attentive, welcoming, and incredibly friendly. It greatly enhanced my dining experience, making me feel completely at home. I wholeheartedly recommend Tannat - Parillada to anyone visiting Montevideo. It's not just a meal; it's an experience that shouldn't be missed.

I had a wonderful experience at the National Museum of Visual Arts. I really appreciated the thoughtful connection between modern and traditional art, showcasing works from some of Uruguay’s most famous artists. The museum is well-maintained, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Beautiful sculpture garden with a cafe right out front of the building. The collection ranges from sculptures, to paintings and video installations. Each section of the museum was incredibly well curated with themes and media. Great mix of classic works and contemporary. Highly recommended on a nice day and even a rainy one . :)

A very simple rectangular floor plate with a mezzanine level, plus ancillary spaces that accommodate both the permanent collection and special exhibits. The important thing is one can easily view the artwork with proper illumination. The museum grounds are beautiful and tranquil. Nestled in the vibrant Palermo neighborhood, CandyBar is a charming corner bar that has transformed from a quaint local store into a trendy hotspot. With its eclectic decor featuring mismatched lampshades and movie memorabilia, this cozy spot exudes an indie film vibe. Although it has limited seating and doesn’t take reservations, arriving early ensures you can savor their renowned potato omelette and other delightful dishes.
The best value for money that I’ve seen in Uruguay. They have various “dish of the day” options at around 700 or 800 UYU, it’s an appetizer and entree like what you’d get at maybe a four star restaurant. Friendly staff, shady and delightful outdoor dining (weather permitting). I suppose the portion sizes could be slightly larger but it’s very filling and really what you’re getting is the subtle recipes, this is a big surprise if you thought it was just a diner or a coffee shop (although it’s on some lists of “best coffeehouses of Montevideo.” I’m told they do tapas in the evenings.

The neighbourhood needs more places like this. Not just places that are open (haha!) but cute, health conscious, trendy places that boost the overall aesthetic of the community. Got the hummus and a veggie toasty thing which were both yummy. My date enjoyed the meat lovers deluxe burger with the best roasted potatoes I’ve had in a long time. Had a lovely glass of wine and a delicious banana pie crumble (Banofee) for dessert. I fell in love a little bit this evening and CandyBar sure did make it sweet.

Came here after it was suggested in our Lonely Planets guide and it didn’t disappoint! We were served by the lovely Grummie who was super attentive and super helpful with translating in English for us. The ambience and decor is so lovely and relaxing and very cosy. There are only 6 tables inside and the rest are outside, but we arrived at 20:00 on a Thursday evening and managed to get a table, but it soon filled up. The place is also clean including the toilets. I had the Candy burger which I have to admit was probably one of the best burgers I have ever had and we come from London! I knew it was good from the moment the waitress asked how I would like my burger cooked (medium). There was plenty enough of burger and home cooked chips. My husband had the bagel with egg and prawns. Lovely flavours only criticism he had was that the prawns were cold and not enough spice. Suggestion would be to marinate the prawns in a chilli sauce and cook to order so they are nice and hot in the bagel. Lots of drinks to cater for all tastes and they give complimentary olives when you sit down which is a lovely touch. Craft beers available are delicious and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend this gorgeous restaurant for burgers, taps or cocktails. Thinking of planning a brunch for the weekend here!
Louise S — Google review
Small place, but open earlier than most, though the earlier menu is limited to burgers, we ate and enjoyed tremendously the flavor and quality of the food. The lemonade is served with a slice of ginger and several pomegranate seeds, which added color and beauty, but also ginger helps with digestion and is an anti-inflammatory food, so it was a beautiful and a health booster. My kids ordered their burgers super plain, but the young man who took orders and prepared the burgers was quite pleasant about the few changes we requested. My burger was delicious, juicy and flavorful and with egg and delicious arugula and sweet carmelized onions adding flavor and depth. The evening menu is even more varied and we wished we had discovered this place sooner so we could come back for dinner. Recommend!

Simple and austere in appearance, this makes the discovery of this gem of a tiny little resto-bar in Palermo neighborhood into much more than rewarding experience. The honest food menu is small but comprehensive with gourmet twists that elevate the otherwise traditional courses to unexpected level of unpretentious quality. The original cocktails and drinks add nicely and the service is casual but knowledgeable and very kind. Great for a quiet lunch during the week or for a nice dinner or after office drinks. Place is very small so come early to avoid disappointment.

The museum LA CUMPARSITA Dinner & Tango Show is a great place to learn about tango. There are exhibits with photos, videos, and other artifacts from the history of tango. The dinner show features dancers performing traditional Argentine dances like the milonga and the pasodoble.
You can't go inside unless you have a tour of Palacio Salvo. The Museo Del Tango itself is basically just one and a half rooms. It's very small. It's merely there to serve as a tribute to what was there before the palace was built. So don't expect anything huge or grand. It's a token and just part of the palace tour.

Tango developed in Argentina and Uruguay around the same time, but the 1917 tango La Cumparsita became the most famous tango created, and it was composed in a building that predated the Salvo Palace. The small museum provides great insight into the history and culture of tango. Note that one can only visit the museum through a guided tour of Palacio Salvo

Very nice tour we had today!
Christian K — Google review
A charismatic young woman, gave us lots of information regarding Tango and La Comparsita written by Gerardo Matos Rodriguez ( his educated sister listened to her ill brother's humming the notes but she wrote it ) I was surpised to hear that way back, Tango was forbidden to women. Vhuntermassage LLC

Worst experience ever! They told us we should come at 4 for the tour in english and when we arrived at 4 they told us we were too late and we couldn‘t do the tour. Although we were the only ones interested in the tour and the tour lasts only 45 minutes. I guess they just don’t want to work. Ridicolous. Not even worth one star.
Charlotte B — Google review
It is a quite interesting experience. Tango is shared between Uruguay and Argentina and so is Carlos Gardel while La Cumparsita is 100% Uruguay
Didi — Google review
Visiting the musium is allowed only for 20 min and inside of it there was only one small room to see. The staff said in the tour English is spoken so I took it. The staff gave me a little explanation of the tango history but she did not speak English well and also didn't have experience of tango dance. For me it's like a joke. I was so disappointed because the musium was the reason why I went to monte video. Not much to see, not much to know, no worth visiting here.
You 0 — Google review
This is actually the museum of La Cumparista. Before Palacio Salvo was built, the original site was a local music bar. The author of La Cumparista was Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, who played his music here in this bar for the first time. La Cumparista has been the symbol of tango since then. Back then there was no woman allowed in the bar. The name originates from Spanish word comparisa. -sta means small. It should be Comparista. But he wrote it as Cumparista. This is probably due to the Cocoliche language, a mixture of Spanish and Italian. Anyway this is a good museum to visit.

Playa Ramirez is a relaxed city destination known for its beautiful beach and promenade, offering stunning sunset views. Located near downtown and Rodo Park, this 1.4-kilometer crescent along La Rambla provides various activities on the sand and in the calm waters, making it perfect for families. The area also features bars, cafes, restaurants, hotels, and the National Museum of Visual Arts.
Super tranquillo place, relaxing and family-friendly.

This is a lovely little beach, right in the city centre. Popular place to take kids at the weekend. It seemed quite busy even when I was there in March. If you are staying in Montevideo and want to sit on the beach for a bit, this is the ideal place to come.
Andy S — Google review
Nice and chill beach. Restaurants closeby and street Workout
Sylvain F — Google review
Underrated little beach in a great location. Good for, you guessed it, sunsets. Adjacent Carnival style park. Nice media Luna crescent shape to it. Good vibes and friendly people. Nice parks for walking and some shade immediately behind it.
Drew K — Google review
On a weekday, around 8:30 am, I was walking on the Rambla Presidente Wilson to Barrio Sur. On my left, Playa Ramirez stood out with a large group of young soccer players exercising. They were strenghtening their core, legs and feet. They ran, leaped in the sand with socks or bare feet ( clever ) Vhuntermassage LLC

Beautiful beach with plenty of activities to do. If you like volleyball this beach is perfect, since they have plenty of nets to play in.

Playa Ramírez in Montevideo, Uruguay, is a relaxed and convenient urban beach with a calm atmosphere. It's a great spot to unwind, soak up the sun, and enjoy scenic views of the Rio de la Plata. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful day by the water.
H K — Google review
Ramirez Beach is a lovely spot for a stroll and to enjoy some fresh air, especially during the quieter winter months. Its proximity to the city makes it convenient for a quick escape. However, if you’re looking for a classic beach day with pristine sand and swimming, this might not be the ideal choice. Being close to the port and within the urban area, the water and shoreline aren’t always the best for swimming. Overall, it’s more of a scenic walking area rather than a traditional beach destination.

Nestled in the heart of Ciudad Vieja, Sometimes Sunday has quickly established itself as a must-visit destination for brunch enthusiasts and breakfast lovers alike since its opening in late 2018. This charming café has become a favorite among both locals and tourists, thanks to glowing word-of-mouth recommendations. Known for its Instagram-worthy ambiance, visitors can't resist snapping photos of their beautifully crafted dishes and cozy setting.
You can't miss this cafe! The coffee and the food are delicious! The crispy rice is outstanding and the portions are just perfect! Definitely a comeback!

If there’s one spot you need to eat at in the city - this is it. No disrespect to Montevideo, but why are you anti seasoning? When I tell you, every spot we ate at had bland food as nothing had salt or pepper or any other spice for that matter. After 2 days of having disappointing meals, we ended up here hoping to the powers that be that we would finally have good food. Hallelujah First off, the service was stupendous. Everything we ordered were recs from the women working who were all super chill and friendly. I got the omelette which ironically was the best meal I had in the city. We loved our meal here so much we went inside to buy swag. My only souvenir from Montevideo were the goodies I got from here. Vamos arriba
Julie D — Google review
The café was overall a pleasant experience. I really enjoyed the Vietnamese coffee, which was well-prepared and flavorful. However, the matcha was not up to the mark. My friend tried the brisket sandwich and found it very good. I ordered the Shakshuka, but it turned out to be quite average. On the positive side, the location is excellent—right by the port—making it a convenient and nice spot for tourists to stop by.
VARSHA S — Google review
The vibe of the place was good. The arranged chairs and tables for us. It was a busy day for them. Still they took order on time and provided food on time. We ordered rice noodles, crepe verde and eggs on toast. All were good. Loved the rice noodles and roasted cabbage. Even the drinks were good. Its a must visit French toast and egg on waffle was too good … I think they changed the menu ..

What a gem in the heart of Old Town! We came here every day during our stay and loved everything we tried. The shakshuka, brisket, and steak were absolute standouts, and the coffee was incredible too. Such a wonderful experience from start to finish—thank you for making our mornings so special! ❤️

This place is super fun and the breakfast food is always spectacular! I don't know how they do it, but the omelette is one of the most amazing bites for any meal! And, the pancakes (sweet ones) were unbelievable, as well! The matcha latte frio is refreshing and a great way to start your day! The chef and staff are great and truly make each visit a tasty treat!

So good we came to this place twice in 24 hours. The coffee was great...try an iced Americano. And the pulled pork sandwich was unbelievable. Good service and it's in a nice area with other small shops and restaurants around.

Nestled in the heart of Montevideo, the Museo de la Memoria stands as a poignant reminder of Uruguay's tumultuous past during the civilian-military dictatorship from 1973 to 1985. Opened in 2007, this evocative museum is situated in the former summer residence of dictator Maximo Santos and serves as a vital space for reflection on human rights and social justice.
An important museum of the sad history from Uruguay and other countries within South America. This museum is very informative and is a must for everyone to be educated on what has happened and hopefully will never happen again. I highly advise you to take a walk around the gardens after, as it is a nice way to finish your visit here. The gardeners were tidying, and hopefully, repairs would be made in certain areas. There is a broken archway and an abandoned building that is out of bound. Except for this the garden is really nice. There is a little pink castle and a grotto. The staff are really friendly and are ready to help and answer any questions. Free to enter. The museum is a bit far away from other tourist spots, but I am glad I came here.

Phil C — Google review
An amazing recollection of dark and terrible moments in the history with the only purpose of unveiling atrocities against humanity and never repeat them ever again.
Carlos C — Google review
What an amazing resource about an important time in Uruguayan history. Essential stop for any visitor. Alejandra Guzman took time to help we English speakers understand the exhibits. We are immensely grateful for her generosity and great spirit.
Ann W — Google review
As a Uruguayan it was a debt to go there, to refresh the memory about a grey and sad moment of the country, the military dictatorship period. However, and although the topic of the museum involves a terrorist moment of the country full of violence, torture, assassination and sadness, the tour throughout all the rooms convey stregth to fight or keep fighting against human rights violations. It is composed of different moments, the ressisstance, the coup, the disappearances of people and tortures. It worth seeing it! Set in an old neo classic style house with a history itself, enigmatic, and surrounded by an amazing french style garden in the middle of the City, that makes you forget about it, like being in another era.

A gorgeous bookstore that is well-worth the trip. While most of the book titles are in Spanish, one can still go to enjoy the decorations, the garden, and the cafe. It's also cool to see a stained glass ceiling. The staff are very friendly and welcoming

Highly recommended place for cinema lovers. Comfortable, friendly, and great selection of films. The small bookstore/boutique is a lovely bonus. Seeing a movie here was a highlight of my visit to Montevideo.

Excelent cinema. Great atmosphere. Kind service. Comfortable seats and a good screen. The air conditioner was out of service tho, luckily for me i went in winter so it wasn't a bother
Verónica ( — Google review
The new facilities of Cinemateca are very functional and efficient. Three screening rooms, one considerably larger than the other two. There's a nice cafeteria with outdoors seating. It's not expensive in comparison to the other more commercial cinemas, and the selection of films is similar to that of an arthouse. Would recommend, but always check availability of tickets online.

HUGO SOCA - cocina casera is a restaurant in Pocitos that has transformed into a store during the pandemic, offering visitors the opportunity to purchase products and various homemade dishes while also providing dining options. The establishment features a lovely terrace for warm days and offers diverse homemade italo-uruguayan food. Although not inexpensive, the quality of the food makes it worthwhile. Guests have praised the delicious food, delightful service, and charming atmosphere.
The food was amazing, the service delightful and the atmosphere charming. Our party of 7 ordered a variety of starters and main courses and we all agreed that they were excellent. Highly Recommended!

Excellent Uruguayan food with excellent service. One of my favorite restaurants in montevideo. Highly, highly recommended, but just make a reservation because it’s a bit small.
Andrew S — Google review
The quality of the food did not meet the cost. The milanesa was tough and one of my party said could have done just as well from a street cart. The desert was the best part of the meal. That I would rate high. The place is nice but not one of my recommendation's.
Keith J — Google review
