Beer selection was obviously very good. Food was also nice. Bit pricey compared to others similar but was still worth what we paid.

Went there having supper. Had fried tofu pizza, fried sausage, lamb egg rolls, etc. Everything was delicious. Lots of local and tasty beer. Waitress speaks good English. Had a fantastic time.

Great craft beer. Coming back tomorrow to try the food. Watching the lamb and cheese springs being prepared was enough. 😋

We had quite a good evening here trying various craft beers. Initially the bare wood decor inside put me off, but once we sat down and the place filled up more with people chatting and laughing, the atmosphere was actually quite good. The pints of beer were reasonably priced and there was a good variety of craft beers. The food was also pretty good, I especially liked the juicy Gohza, which was delicious. The tempura was really good also, as was the fish and chips which I tried as my fussy kid didn't finish it all. Overall well worth a visit for beer nerds.

We almost didn’t enter because of the (unappealing) plywood exterior makes it look like it is still under construction! However, many of our other options were not open during the late afternoon, so we took a gamble. I was interested in trying local beers (they also serve a range of sakes) and the Woodmill Hazy IPA that I eventually selected was very fruity with a delicious range of flavours. However, the young waiter was clueless when I told him what kind of beer I liked, and I had to go to the counter to speak to the owner to get some in help making the right choice. We ordered a pizza and some karaage, and both were quite tasty, and the music was quite nice. I had been hoping that they would serve flights of beer, so I could tasty small quantities of different beers, but that was unfortunately not the case. Also, while the beer was good, at ¥700-800 for just over half a pint, I felt it was quite pricey. The pints are more reasonably priced, but I don’t like to order a whole pint of a beer I might not like. And finally, I don’t know how often it happens, but a number of the food items were listed as unavailable.

The restaurant my wife and I kept coming back to. The vibe had a nice balance of locals and travelers which gave it a welcoming/friendly vibe. The beer selection was excellent. They really strive to gather a good selection of local beer. The food was really great too and offered a wide variety of options.

Fantastic little bar, craft-ale-meets-izakaya, a must visit for any (craft) beer fanatic visiting Kyoto. Excellent, friendly service crews and superb bar snacks. I have had the Grilled Gyoza and it’s really juicy like the stated in the menu. 😂 Had 4 pints of ale, a serving of their chicken karaage and a serving of their gyoza. Feeling really happy and satisfied!!!!!! Great range of Japan’s brewed ale too. Amazing place to chill and snack.

You can head inside the museum to learn about the process of making sake. Across the street is a garden where you can buy some sake samples, or head inside the restaurant for some food and more samples from the brewery. The food was delicious and it was definitely an experience.

Need a break? Need a drink? Perfect place for both. Good selection of drinks. Only issue was that not everything is chilled and they don’t have ice to help either the ones not chilled. Would have been very much appreciated on a hot day. Otherwise it’s a good place to visit.

If you’re looking for a place with authentic Japanese food and an amazing sake experience I highly recommend you to check this place out. It’s an sake and beer brewery that has a “souvenir” shop with sake and snacks and also a restaurant. The restaurant serves up an amazing sake tasting platter with 9 sake kinds for 1950 yen. The sushi is also amazing and comparable to other high end sushi places in Japan. The gyoza and chicken wings are also really good. The only negative thing I can think of was that the souvenir shop was closed when we had finished eating. The time was 20:00 then so I can understand that it’s late, but at the same time there were still a lot of customers in the restaurant who probably would have liked to browse the shop.

Well worth a visit! The sake is delicious, tried the last three on the menu. Nice patio on a warm day. The beer is also well done.

Price was very seasonable for the food and quality. Good value for money if you need a break from sake! It is a good lunch option if you are here for half day tour. It gets really popular during lunch time - I’d recommend coming in at noon.

On a fine Kyoto spring day, I decided to ride my bicycle an hour from downtown Kyoto to Kizakura Kappa Country for lunch. When I walked my bike into the courtyard and tried to figure out where to park my bike, everybody who worked there ignored me, so I parked it in the corner far away from any seating. After a mediocre lunch, I came back out and there was a GIANT sign on my bike saying "Don't Park Your Bicycle Here!!!" This is after talking with the hostess and several servers, who said nothing about my bike during lunch. This place is not bicycle friendly, or even friendly, for that matter. To passive aggressively shame a paying customer is utterly ridiculous...zero empathy, zero communication. My guess is that it is the bizarre woman who greets you for service at the restaurant...the whole interaction was so strange and unfriendly (wouldn't let me look at the English menu, wanted to know if I had made a reservation to get into their empty restaurant and gave me a "look" when I said I hadn't). I can't imagine treating a foreigner this way in my own country. Shame on KKC.

We had such a wonderful time with the sake tasting! I think this is definitely one of the most amazing values in Kyoto and so easy to enjoy. Sit down, wait for the 18 sakes to arrive, food comes to you, have a super fun evening! Very approachable a low pressure way to taste such a wide assortment of sakes. Three stars for the food because what we happened to order wasn’t totally amazing, but the experience of tasting lots of different options along with lots of different sakes definitely a five out of five!

Went on a Tuesday only to find out one restaurant and sake is open.. The rest of food stalls are closed. Nevertheless, an amazing experience to try 18 different sake in 1 go, then found the high class sake list. Okay we tried one, of course fell in love. The staff are very nice, communities well to non-Japanese-speaking consumers.

Pro tip: you’re required to order at least one drink at your table, so I added a local beer on the side. Tons of food options available, all from your seat—just order off the menu and they bring everything to you. Super convenient and chill. I walked in with no reservation, which I couldn’t find mentioned in other reviews, so hopefully that helps anyone planning to visit. The atmosphere was great, and the sake connoisseurs were super friendly and guided me in the right direction with any questions I had. We sat at the first restaurant when we walked in, not realizing we could sit anywhere or order from any restaurant in the venue. Can’t complain though - we loved the overall experience! The food was fantastic and the flight of 5 sakes was awesome. I just wish there had been some explanation or guidance on the sakes, but that may have been due to the language barrier. Still, it was a memorable visit and I’d definitely come back.

Stumbled upon this place thanks to Reddit and was not let down! I did the 9 sake and 9 appetizer pairing and it was excellent. My husband got the 18 sake tasting and loved it as well. I enjoyed every sake I tried. Ordering is a breeze with so much sake and food to choose from. It’s foreigner friendly and I felt welcome. No reservation needed.

Nice place to visit in Kyoto. Good food and good sake and they have structure to receive tourists who don’t speak Japanese. The guy who received us was very kind, cool and he explained a lot about sake to us!

Staff are not fully English spoken, however. They are more than happy to assist you. Food is reasonably priced and they have 8 restaurants for you to choose from. Specialise in sake tasting, going at 2450 yen from 18 different breweries, but they have a 1 person 1 drink rule. Mingled with a local Japanese couple and had a great time, more towards local vibe but, good money and time spent.

I don’t think of craft beer when I think of Japan, but this place was legit. Also, incidentally, the best yakisoba we had in Japan! The meat was thin but soooo tender.

Cute little Craft Brewery spot with a nice selection of beers. Including the "fest" style Polka. They have food too but unless you read Japanese you'll need Google Translate to work out the menu on the wall.

11 Taps of Japanese craft beer! A cozy atmosphere with more seating upstairs. The food is absolutely amazing and worth the trip, even if you aren't looking to drink. One of the oldest craft beer bars on Kyoto!

A great selection of real ales even had a Stout on draft when I visited. Good tapas choice as well , you will need google translate to view menu on the blackboard. Well worth a visit if you like your beer

Great beer and tasty food, once you figure out how to order! The chalkboard menu couldn’t be deciphered with a translating app, but I was able to order from photos on Google reviews haha. The negima, karaage, and tempura were all great.

Food was garbage. Do not trust the Google map images Avoid if you're expecting any decent food. The chicken was the leftovers of the chicken and the fries were fried in old oil and were not cripsy at all. Go ONLY for beer, in which they have a good selection. Service was ok. Incredibly slow and inattentive. Not what you would expect from any Japanese restaurant.

If you’re a beer lover like I am, you need to bring yourself to Kyoto, Japan and to the Spring Valley Brewery! The staff are amazing and friendly and the beer and food are fantastic! They offer a wide range of beers and a menu that will satisfy any urges that you might have!

My wife and I sampled their beers and enjoyed some fries as a snack. The Japanese lager and the dark beer were both excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive. A local recommended the place and I can see why. We'll be back.

If I could give more stars, I would! This place deserves all the stars ✨ I recommend you to comes early as it can get crowded and you might not get a table. The place has that antique look outside but it’s pretty modern inside with their beer barrels. As you may guess, their beer is so good! Try their set menu with 6 cups of beer and choose your favorite! Food is delicious, they know how to make a nice pizza! Made my Italian side proud. What surprised us the most are their dessert… so yummy!! It’s not common to have nice dessert at breweries and they’ve the best ones! Please, ask for their moist yuzu cake. You’re welcome. For those visiting Nishiki Market, the brewery is a block away. Keep that in mind!

My boyfriend was interested in the beer and we ordered a set, but the tea-flavoured beer we ordered at the end tasted rather strange.The pizza was unusual with a scallion oil flavour. The ambience is good.

The service was good and attentive. However the main attraction was the beer and unfortunately in my opinion the India Pale Lager (Y1200/pint) was overly orange, completely flat and slightly sour. It was a struggle to finish the pint. Despite the numerous awards, I don't think this is a place for beer lovers.

I did not expect to find a place like this in Kyoto. It's a small place, for maybe 15-20 people tucked away by a canal with a nice selection of beers on tap. Someone put a thought into the selection, and I am sure everyone will find a beer they enjoy. The staff was friendly, English speaking and welcoming. If you're tired of the Asahi Super Dry, definitely pay them a visit. From the food I can vouch for the chicken bits and the potato wedges with harisa sauce.

This was such a gem in our Kyoto trip. Excellent beer, great atmosphere, fun for the kids and adults with games and other things to play, awesome food and overall just a great experience. The staff were very helpful, attentive and friendly and understand and can speak enough English to help out with anything you need. We also happened to be staying near the The Garage as well; which meant we’d already tried some of their beers and met some of the team before coming here. The food was so tasty! Everyone enjoyed it, the kids even liked the hot sauce! Thanks so much to the team at KBL 🫶

Amazing beer. The first craft brewery I've come across in Japan so far. Unlike in Canada it seems all I see is the large alcohol companies so this was a cool change. Delicious beer. Amazing karaage. Friendly and welcoming staff. Cozy little spot with only bar stools and some standing outside. A great stop if like me you finished waking through Nishi Hongan-ji, Higashi Hongan-ji and the Shosein Garden! Also some nice merch for sale

Super cute spot!! It happened to be close to our hotel room so we decided to check it out. It's very friendly for foreigners, Amost all patrons in there were travelers. But the staff were super friendly and the beers were amazing, especially if you're looking for craft beer. I'm from the west coast of BC so it's very similar to the small microcraft breweries that are all over the place out there and it was super fun to hang out and drink beer. I highly recommend the pineapple sour and the pernicious weeb double IPA. Five stars absolutely!!!!!!

Excellent craft beer stop next to the canal - Green Tea IPA and Char Face Keller were our favorites, and their chicken Karaage had a nice hint of spice, pairs perfectly with hoppiness of our beers. Outdoor drink zone is cute and cosy, located on a side street so far less car and pedestrian traffic than surrounding streets, despite proximity to the train station. Only downside is the Place is small so seats limited

Small little craft beer bar with a solid assortment of exciteting beers to try. The place has a cozy vibe with nice bartenders. They serve food as well. I went back several times during my stay in Kyoto to try all their beers on tap and each was worth it.

Good choice on menu, very descriptive and accurate on the point of taste, super happy I took a good walk to come down here, staff are friendly and welcome to welcoming, around nine beers on tap, look like a good representation of what is made locally, with cocktails and snacks as well 😊 lovely walk along the river and it's away from the noisy streets, good for the adhd'rs and other out there 😉

We’d seen the menu here as we’d passed it daily travelling to our hotel, so we decided to check it out. We didn’t try any of the beers - only food - so we ordered the Popcorn Shrimp and the Seasonal Vegetable Fritters. The food was good but the service was lacklustre (which was surprising as there were more staff than customers when we were there). Not sure we’d head back, especially as there are so many great food places in Kyoto to choose from.

Fantastic craft beers and friendly staff. They have quite a selection and it was hard to try them all, but will definitely be back again! Good food, too! The only thing that bugged me was that they were serving some beer (for a special they were having) in plastic cups! I requested they use glasses for us, as I don’t like creating more plastic waste. They politely obliged.

Our hotel was nearby, and we came here twice to try their excellent beers. The 3 glass flights are good for testing out some options. My favourite was the Destroy Angle IPA, and the stout. We also loved their fried chicken and their fish’n’ chips 👍

A lovely spot to enjoy a craft beer, slightly way from the madding crowd at the markets. The vegetable fries are excellent But the range of craft beers is terrific and most enjoyable. Quality beers with flavour, diversity and local ingredients. We loved it and will return to try another flight of beers.

I’m not a beer person, but loved there options. Everyone in our party loved what we ordered. They have won some awards as well- very well deserved.

The Belgium tap beer is so good , but the Beef stew is the most delicious , I ordered twice !!

Called in on our last night in Kyoto. 10 year anniversary so no food served beyond snacks. Some interesting and excellent beers, friendly staff with some English spoken too. Near a metro so easy to get to and with visiting.

Great little place outside main tourist area. Few selected beers from their own batch and a few more from the region, maybe 10 in total. So quality over quantity. Nice food to pair with beers. Saison is great, as well as blueberry "something". Relatively small place that gets crowdy during the night. Cool staff, great music. A formula for a lovely beer night in Kyoto. We went here for some beers after dinner. This must be the most expensive beer price in Kyoto with 1200 jpy per pint. Was not worth the price and overated. Didnt get the receipt either so felt like a bit scam. Thats rare in Japan.

An excellent brewpub. You can't possibly try all the beers on tap in one sitting (I challenge you!). Also had the fried chicken which was moist and tasty. I will be back!

After doing some walking around in Kyoto, it was nice to visit this place on my way back to Osaka. It was a good place to eat and the staff were amazing. Bit more expensive for a izakaya, but it nice to try something different. The chicken dishes were really tasty. And we can at the right time, as it can get busy.

Stopped by this yakitori restaurant after a sake tour, and it was the perfect place to have dinner. The food was delicious especially the nicely seasoned kushiyaki, crispy fried chicken skins, Caesar salad, and pickles that paired perfectly with sake and beer. Every dish was full of flavor and cooked just right.

The freshest chicken I have had in Japan! Every piece of meat and innards tasted clean, with no foul odour! Service was fast and great! Ordered the spring chicken, which was a seasonal special, and the 6 type tasting set. Absolutely phenomenal! Definitely worth a try if you are in kyoto. Large bottle of warm sake cost only 900 yen.

Very cheap meal, came out to roughly 1000 yen per person for filling portions. The staff do not speak English and it was a little hectic ordering, but everything we ordered tasted good. The yakitori skewers are very small portions so order extra.

Food was 10/10! Fast and deliciously. We ordered a bunch of skewers to share, wings and the Oyako chicken. Very filling and yummy!

This is a really convenient place to eat if you are in the area to visit the sake breweries. Ordering is easy as they have an English menu. All of the food I had was tasty and not that expensive. When I visited, there was a bit of a wait to get a seat, but I think it was worth the wait.

We came here as part of a sake tasting your. We were pleasantly that it is a famous free range chicken restaurant! We had the chicken yakitori and chicken donburi. Both were great. The best part was the house brewed cold sake. It was the first but the best sake of our tour!!!

l walked in this restaurant on a week day without reservation. lt was really a great ambiance with professional service. The atmosphere was amazing and food was delicious especially l loved Zaru Tofu with special salt and sauce. Tempura l have order was so soft, quite a surprise for me. Overall quite delicious meal served with complimentary tea. But please kindly note that there was a table charge for 300Yen, well deserved. By the way, portions were quite fullfiling please order taking into consideration of this info. Overall a bit pricey, but l really enjoyed the experience!

A hidden gem for the traditional Japanese restaurant! They are the sake brewery and a full blown dining place! The place is spacious and delicious. More importantly, the food is delicious, beautiful and very affordable. We paid only roughly 2,000 yen for the vast variety of dishes from various types of tofu, tempura, and fish. Everything is fresh and naturally flavorful! They also have a small shop that you can buy their sake and local products. I definitely want to go back to enjoy the food there again!

Absolutely loved our meal! The unagi was rich, tender, and full of flavor, but the real standout was the handmade tofu—it was the best I’ve ever had. So smooth and delicate! The prices are very reasonable, and the place is mostly filled with locals, which adds to the charm. A hidden gem for anyone looking for authentic Japanese flavors.

Beautiful and quiet place, the design gives you a certain amount of privacy from other table, looks very modern. Great food and the service was very quick and the staff very attentive. We had the course with a variety of dishes which were all very nice. There is also a little shop where you can buy various sake, sweets and other items. There was no menu in English but we used Google picture translate and it was easy to order, some of the staff also spoke English.

Walking around looking for a place to eat and came across this place. Great options with a wide variety of choices. I settled on the unagi but was torn between other choices including the brewers selection which looked good. That one they only make 30 sets a day. But still went with the unagi since they got the guy out front making it. I’m sure whatever you choose will be fine.

We had a wonferful lunch at this beautiful restaurant after visiting Gekkeikan Sake Brewery and Museum, just a few minutes away. We enjoyed it and I highly recommend it!!

Order set meal with additional shot of local sake. Food is above average, the tofu is soft and filled with bean fragrance, with special salt or soya sauce provided will elevate the tofu experience. The sake is recommended for drinker. The Resturant setting is nice and calming, except it is a bit noisy during our visit. Overall it is a good experience.

Girlfriend was shopping at Uniqlo around the corner and I was game over so went out and looked for at place to sit, wait and have some ale. Stumbled upon this place by random, went up. Small place, two people sitting and chatting with the bartender. I dont speak any japanese so were just on my phone by myself. 10 minutes later one of the guests asked if it was the first time i was in Japan. Conversation continued for 3 hours and girlfriend joined later. This day it wasnt too busy so the bartender and the guest had good time to talk. He even put on music i liked. Served great beer and had a whiskey. His coworker joined later and we talked videogames. It was great talking to some locals. What was supposed to be 15 minutes turned into 3 hours. 10/10 would come back.

Fantastic place, great atmosphere and an even more wonderful hostess. We came here on a rainy day, just before a sake tour and ordered two very nice and crisp tasting beers. The hostess brought us some complementary ‘Rainy day’ snacks. Very resonably priced and cosy atmosphere. Loved it tonnes ❤️.

I am really happy that I found this diamond in the middle of Kyoto. The food, the dessert and the beers were awesome, but the best part was the staff. All the people was really kind and always smiling, as Brazilians my wife and me loved the place. I truly recommend it!

Excellent beer. Being a fan of the Hazy Ipa, the sessionable Good Time was a dream. Their American IPA was also solid. I'm just surprised at how good these small places are and the kind of effort they put into their beer.

Stopped in for a drink and a few snacks with a friend. The beer and sake list is very decently sized. I tried the sake and my friend had their beer #7 which rotates as far as I am aware. The karaage and the fries were outstanding.

If you're into craft beers and samurai you have to give this place a look. Located steps away from a subway station, this little joint has lots of character. You pay upfront and choose from their great selection of craft beers. Service was very good, and she politely helped us choose beers that suited our tastes. On the second floor you can enjoy the balcony while watching an old samurai film. All in all this place has a great atmosphere and good vibes! 🍻

Living in North Kyoto, Before 9 is one of the best local spots around. A refurbished Machiya, the interior is peaceful and cozy with a minimalistic look. They have 8 or so beers each night, always a great selection, and priced at market value for craft beer here in Japan. The food is excellent and reasonsobaly priced. Standing room downstairs and tables upstairs to fit a small party. This is not a rowdy place and not the best place to meet new people, better for a delicious beer or sake and a relaxing chat with friends. The staff are friendly and gracious and take good care of their locals and new customers.

Good beers! I had two Japanese craft beers and some smoked oysters. I arrived right around opening time on a Sunday afternoon, and I had the whole second floor to myself for a while. Nice big tables, and I was seated next to a power outlet. I got a good amount of studying done 👍🏼 Staff was attentive and friendly, too. I really enjoyed it 🤗 I’ll go back next time I’m in Kyoto!

The food was great as well as the beer and the employees. Its a bit out of the way but there are other craft beer places in the area. Also you pay upfront when you order not at as you leave.

A fun place to be especially for those who are interested in sake and local food in general. In this century-old building, there are treasures of local sake and products like sake ice cream. There is also an all-you-can-drink sake tasting as well. The staffs are attentive, knowledgable and can speak English. You will enjoy being there.

Essential experience while here. Sake tasting platter was excellent allowing u to try five different sakes with some sides. Waited for an hour at 2pm though.

Amazing home made beer. Husband and wife business, and they are making one of best IPA I tried. They make everything in house, and looks like they are doing it in garage but don’t be discouraged, it adds more to the charm.

Very lucky to have the opportunity to taste the beers from Woodmill Brewery. The lemon weizen was a new flavour for me and was very oishi. We also liked the red ale and cute beer man.

Established in 2018, this brewery offers three regular CBs: Hassaku White (Japanese citron), Golden Ale, and IPA. Additionally, two specially-brewed CBs are available on tap. Although the Stout is listed as 'special,' it is regularly available, even during summer. All beers have a moderate alcohol level of 5-6%. Be sure to check the website for the limited opening hours. The brewery features open-air tap tables in a quiet residential area. The venue resembles a small warehouse with brewing tanks but is clean and comfortable. Prices are reasonable, with small beers at 500 JPY and medium beers at 700 JPY. The friendly owner couple adds to the positive experience.

Fantastic little mom and pop brewery I happened to come across while navigating through the residential areas. Extremely nice couple and some fantastic beers, they were very accommodating and the wife took time to come chat with us while enjoying the beers and ambiance. Definitely a great little spot that's quiet and relaxing.

Amazing mom and pop brewery making the best of local Kyoto ingredients! Definitely check out their beer made from Shinshindo Bakery's baguette ends, their fun IPAs, and their amazing Hassaku White ale! Also the coffee stout is so nice in Winter!

We enjoyed the evening at Bankujun very much! Easygoing atmosphere, good music, tasty dumplings and a good craft beer selection! The owner was super friendly and the location was pretty cool!

Traditional style izakaya with a very nice atmosphere and great food. The menu is pretty long, including grill, fried, boiled, stir fried or raw dishes. Great food but I’d say it’s a bit pricey compared to what I’ve seen around. Nevertheless, 100% recommended!!

This place is real. Qui hard to find. Real atmosphere, almost Japanese only customers, good variety of food from grill to fried to sashimi or soup. We ate on the tatami 👌🏻

It's going to be hard finding another restaurant during our stay in Japan that will live up to the wonderful experience we had at Kurakura. From the moment we stepped in, the staff made us feel welcome. The food was delicious, the service was prompt, and the atmosphere was perfect. Get there early in the evening if you want to get a seat without a wait. The staff will not rush you out, and allows their guests to stay as long as they want. Because of this, arriving later may result in a long wait for a space to sit.

Had a casual dinner here last night. Very reasonably priced, ice cold beer, delicious food, friendly vibe and good service. Recommend if you're looking for a casual tasty meal in Kyoto. The camembert croquettes were an odd, delicious stand out!

Absolutely exquisite experience!!! They were extremely hospitable and friendly and were able to accommodate five of us on the tatami mats! The food was seriously incredible! We just got in after a long day of traveling and ordered dozens of dishes and every single one was excellent. I really can’t recommend this spot enough. Do note, when you enter you have to walk through a quiet hallway and open a sliding door to get in but don’t be shy, it will be worth it!

Very, very expensive for the quantity received compared to similar establishments in the area. Smallest sashimi serving I have ever received for 2500! Sushi was decent but nothing special. 1 very small eggplant dish, 10 minuscule pieces of average sashimi and 2 medium beer - 6400!!! Service was good, atmosphere good. Portions waaaay too small for the price.

BEST PLACE EVER!!!! The staff here are amazing, met some great people! They are super accommodating and very friendly and show a range of sports. This became my local for my stay in Kyoto. Hope to be back soon

Great place in Kyoto for a decent pint, a game of darts and a good laugh. Love the vibe and atmosphere of this place. Had a few brews and met some nice people and beat some at darts and cards. Highly recommended!! Come on down and have a pint!!

The drinks are awesome. The staff are amazing. I left something here earlier and called them, and they had it! Kept it safe until I came back and were so nice. Strongly recommend to anyone coming to Kyoto. Staff recommendations for restaurants nearby are fantastic.

I visited this bar recently to catch an AFL game, and I had a pretty straightforward experience. When I arrived, I asked if they could put the game on, and there was no problem at all they got it set up right away. The bar itself felt a little dated. I would recommend getting there a little early, it can get busy, depending on what area you are placed.

Watched some NRL here. Did the job. Beer was cold. Aircon was on. TV was working. Only two of us there & didnt eat, so can’t comment on either.

These people are amazing! They can be busy when the finals of football are on. But they have it on , sound up, great atmosphere. When they are busy you can be patient and get a great array of beer , especially Belgian bottled beer. People who complain the pint is expensive seem unaware... its a pint !! Not an Izakaya 300ml jockey mug ... so it’s actually the same price. The staff do such a good job serving sometimes demanding and frankly rude foreign customers who think it’s their right to bark orders in English. Guess what Weeb you are in Japan even when in an English Pub. Remember your manners. I really appreciate this pub, pigs and whistles, and all! The Piggies are the Best! xx

We went for a snack and a drink on a Sunday night, which proved to be quite enjoyable. The drinks were good and the food was tasty as well. We especially liked the nachos. This seems to be a sports bar as well with many TVs showing current events (e.g. F1 Imola/Italy). Bonus for smokers, there is a smoking corner right next to the outdoor seating.

Interesting cocktails and highball. Happy hour is a steal (JPY 200-300 off) and don't forget to ask for a membership card for 5% off 🙂

Great british-style pub, staff speak great english, it was thriving on a monday (bank holiday) evening. So fun to people watch. From two brits!

I’ve been to many Hubs throughout Japan and this is one of the best ones. It’s only a 5-7 minute walk from Kyoto Station. This Hub is quite spacious and has a great vibe to it - a very relaxing and fun atmosphere. They always play good music. There is also an outside patio area, which is awesome in the summer. Inside the restaurant there is no smoking, but there’s a smoking area outside. The staff are super friendly and accommodating. Service with a smile. They are all great. Like all Hubs, they have Happy Hour specials till 7pm (prices range from ¥280 to ¥600 depending on what you order). The food is good here and always flavourful & tasty. They have Covid safety measures in place - temperature scanner at the entrance and hand sanitizers readily available throughout the bar. Don’t forget your Hub card. You get 5% off your order. I’m always looking forward to having a few drinks here and some good times / enjoy 😊

Chill British style pub that is good for catch up. Sells Guinness on tap and i absolutely love it! You will be usher to a table before making your way to the counter to order your food/drinks. You'll collect your drink before going back to your table with a number sign. Food will then be served to your table.

A really great Hostel, it is clean. I booked a room of 6, Female only. Was a bit small but it worked really well. Very nice Staff. They have a nice Bar, with Brunch and other things to eat. Location is also good. Just bring earplugs… a classic that all Hostelers know. 😄

LEN Kyoto Kawaramachi was an amazing stay- 10/10 for value! The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of Kyoto with easy access to shops, cafes, and public transit. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed, and the atmosphere throughout the building felt warm and welcoming. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the café/bar area downstairs was a great spot to relax or meet other travelers. For the price, it’s an incredible deal: stylish, convenient, and cozy. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto!

Extremely clean and pleasant hostel with bunk rooms and though it is only a short walk from the central areas of Kyoto, it is quiet. Importantly, for Kyoto in the late summer, the ceiling air conditioner worked extremely well, even with eight people sleeping in a compact space. The ground floor cafe has plenty of table space to work, plan the next day, or just relax. The second floor also has an additional social space with tables and a small perfectly adequate canteen and laundry. The check in desk woman seemed American/Canadian but had excellent English and Japanese and was very helpful.

Awesome Western style breakfast place! Coffee was excellent and appreciated after a week or so without espresso! Highly recommend this place with you want a good hearty non Japanese breakfast during your trip! Staff were lovely and the place was really cosy and friendly inside!

Really bad experience, the self called barman, was the worst, the cocktails were made with box mixers, the portions for sharing were minuscule and expensive for such a place, we. Ought a bottle of French white wine , they took it to the table already open and it was half full, and to top it up the wine was off, it tasted like vinagre, we went and talk to the " barman" and after trying it (we could even saw in his face he didn't enjoyed I) he said if we wanted a new wine we had to pay for it... So we left him and the bottle and took our business to another place, we recommend you not to try it, go somewhere else, you and your money worth better...

The only great thing about this hostel is the location but besides that the staff were rude , some girl was really impolite. One day we wanted breakfast there and the guy spent literally 1 hour to prepare two cups of coffee !! Once it got ready he took them to another table and he didn’t even notice , we actually told him about it. Many people were waiting for a long time they ended up by canceling their order and leaving. The rating on booking and google maps is misleading! I don’t recommend this place at all !! Not worth the money honestly and it was actually pricy for what they’re offering.

A nice bar serving some European-style food and a great range of Yebisu beer. My uncle tried many different types and he really enjoyed them all. I tried the matcha and hojicha beers which weren’t too strong tasting but worth it just for the experience! Also, if you can get a seat outside it’s a nice atmosphere, since it’s not on a busy road.

I have to start with the service because it was exceptional. Truly outstanding. I returned here because I was so impressed. And then I made a mistake of ordering the cheese platter (see pic). Cheese is expensive here in Japan, and so the quantity of cheese for the price (¥1,580) was as expected. But for all that cheese and prosciutto: two little crackers. Count them. One. Two. Pathetic. I would return to this bar to experience the good beer and awesome service, but I won’t be touching their menu given that level of stinginess.

Nice beer-focused restaurant near Kyoto station. Everything was ordered from the tablet , and the service was quick and attentive. Beer was good but a little expensive. I bought the Wagyu beef to try. 100g was a bit over 4000 yen. Not too bad given it is an expensive steak, but I'd prefer scotch fillet instead as i found it very oily and I had to wipe the hot stone between pieces.

A good spot for a pretty quick meal. Good beer, good sausages, and you should try the meat platter! The ordering was pretty easy and the drinks were VERY fast. It was busy the whole time as well!

Great craft beer bar, get in early because it fills up fast. We got two seats at the bar at 1900 and the staff were turning people away at 2000. Excellent selection of Japanese craft beer and whiskies (we sampled both), it was so good we stayed for at least an hour longer than we had planned. Only one downside, smoking is allowed in the bar.....hence the 3 star for atmosphere.

Great beer and great service! Bartender was super friendly and we loved his sense of humor! He engaged with us in English and Japanese and treated us very well. Great selection of beer and really laid back and comfy mood. Would recommend this bar to anyone in the area to enjoy in the evening.

Owner really doesn’t like foreigners who don’t speak Japanese, doesn’t even like foreigners who do speak Japanese but will put up with them. That being said, only bar that I know of that has Yona Yona Ale on tap. Also only place that I know of where the server has certification from Guinness HQ for their pouring qualifications.

This was one of the most remarkable meals of our trip! Each bite or piece was better than the next. I will never forget the fire roasted eggplant, the squid nigiri, and the impeccable white peach to end the meal. The chef and his family are personable and beyond welcoming and accommodating.

Best sushi I have hand hands down, super intimate experience, the owners are so lovely and the food was incredible. The chef picks the sushi for you, so if you like a tasting menu kind of place, this is where to go. Hidden gem.

We were the only two customers booking for lunch time that day, so the whole session the sushi master is just serving us, food was good and you can see the master’s ability is top notch, but JPY 8800 for 10 dishes and in just 15mins is too overpriced.

I’ve probably had thousands of great sushi meals in my life, including several two and three Michelin star restaurants, nyc great like Sushi Noz, Masa and Sushi Nakazawa included. This was the very best. My family of 4, this warm, welcoming master chef and his lovely team is a serene space. A magical evening of the freshest fish and produce, simply, expertly prepared. Thank you for a night I will never forget!

The loveliest sushi meal I have ever enjoyed. Elegant, delicious, friendly, and quiet without being silent. I loved the seared fish, the tempura fish, the sashimi, and the sushi. Chef MAN-san is truly expert and a most gracious host.

I went to this restaurant with my bf, and unfortunately, it was a big disappointment. The food was bland and didn’t resemble Italian cuisine at all. The portions were tiny – definitely not worth the price. Our waiter seemed indifferent and uninterested, which only added to the negative experience. Overall, it was a waste of time and money. We ended up going somewhere else for a second meal bcs we were still hungry. I definitely do not recommend this place.

NON JAPANESE ASIAN AVOID. My friend and I went here for enjoy an off work Friday night. During the second half of the dinner I realized that they were speaking disrespectful Japanese in a very rude manner to me but really humble and polite to Japanese people and person with white appearance. His attitude made me felt like I was begging for the food 😅😅. I have JLPT N1, so I’m able to tell the differences between levels of politeness in Japanese. I was treated like a beggar by the waiter just because I want to pay the bill without the food I waited for 30 minutes,even at that time the food was not been made yet. They were explaining that the food comes in order like appetizers, main course etc. btw instead of letting us know this beforehand they choose to telling us when we were tired of waiting and forcing us either waiting for rest of dishes or paying the whole bill. BELIEVE ME it’s just a kitchen bar not place you could have something fancy. And you will not be allowed to eat cakes that you bring in, so if you want to celebrate your birthday, be aware. The food was fine, doesn’t worth the price though. fyi

Sat there literally twiddling my thumbs waiting for a server to take my order. They were standing behind the counter talking. Ordered a vodka with grapefruit juice, tasted it, stirred it, thinking the alcohol must be at the bottom…nope. Really stingy cocktail. Pizza was good though.

Just came here for dessert and a drink, but really enjoyed the atmosphere. It's cozy and warm. There is an English menu which makes ordering easy if you don't speak or write Japanese. The waiter was really kind in explaining the notes in my wine (and I just ordered a house glass)! I had the basque cheesecake and it was very good.

Absolutely blown away by how great this place was! Everything we ate and drank was terrific (a lot!) Menu was well priced with the cheaper entree type items much larger than expected❗️Menu and drinks menu displayed a great range of options. Interior was nicely lit (dim) with nice accents and features throughout the dining floor. Open kitchen allows a full view of cooking area (depending on seating location) and staff were friendly, fast and helpful. Bookings recommended on weekends. Hip to mid-age crowd.

This bar has collections of rare Japanese whiskey. Recommend to take the “experience japan” set - choose 2/3 japanese wine or whiskey that your bartender will recommend to you. I ended up paying 5500 JPY for 2 tasting set of whisky but it was one of the best whisky I had! Note that they have table charge after 6pm

This is an out of the way specialist whiskey bar where you can expect to pay top dollar for access to a really world class selection of whiskies. And when I say "top dollar", I am saying it as a whiskey enthusiast who has been to similar places elsewhere who deliver similar selection for far less. Just to give you an idea, I came with a party of four (which adds an automatic $20 US surcharge), ordered three mid-tier whiskies and four beers and ended up paying close to $150 US. (Also, to clarify "world class", I should say that we saw a long list of Japanese spirits as well as numerous American Bourbons and scotches, etc. A really international scope. ) Anyway, as you probably already know if you are reading this, Bozu Bar is the (infamous?) "monk bar" and, of you're there at the right time, you will be served by and have a chance to chat with it's excellent proprietor, who is an extremely knowledgeable drinker (with excellent English) and a true enthusiast, happy to make recommendations, offer comparisons and personal tasting notes, etc. Bottom line, Bozu Bar is not a "stop in for a drink" kind of place by any means, but if you want the "monk bar" experience (or are willing to go off the beaten path simply for the liquor selection), it delivers.

Best gin tasting experience ever !! We ordered a gin flight to try all of the gin, and then had a seasonal cocktail (the Kinobi Matcha was beautiful !!). 🍸The staff were very friendly, offered their recommendations, and explained things very well. The staff were also able to speak in English which helped as a foreigner to Japan. The prices were very reasonable for the drinks and to purchase a bottle. I would highly recommend going to experience incredible Japanese gin with varying flavours !!!

I’ve always enjoyed KI NO BI gin, so visiting their Kyoto location felt like a special occasion. The building is beautifully renovated and the gin itself is still excellent. Unfortunately, the service didn’t meet expectations—not just by Japanese standards, but even Western ones. We were left on our own with little guidance, despite the space being quiet and well-staffed. It made the experience feel cold and unwelcoming. Since then, I’ve lost interest in drinking KI NO BI at home. The visit changed how I feel about the brand.

Had Ki No Bi gin in a cocktail last night and had to come to the distillery to try out their collection. The gin tasting did not disappoint. Really tasty and flavorful unique gins to try, good gin cocktails, and nice bartenders. Highly recommend!

Solid spot next to the Ritz Carlton. They have a vast selection of whiskey. Service is very attentive. My whiskey sour was good, but was lacking depth and a little bit more whiskey. Overall recommend if you’re in the area and looking for a nice spot.

Beautiful hotel with exceptional service… except upstairs. The bar declined to honor even a confirmed reservation and met a polite inquiry with unnecessary attitude. It’s a disappointing mismatch — the rest of the property exemplifies hospitality, while the bar seems to have missed that memo entirely. The hotel would do well to find a partner worthy of its otherwise stellar reputation.

One of the best known bars in Kyoto. A lot of the former apprentices here have gone on to open their own bars. One of them is Bar Rocking Chair. The 2nd floor has 2 main areas. I ate here a couple months ago and it was a really nice experience. I was amazed at how calm it was inside, only a few steps away from busy Nishiki market, but it's a very peaceful and traditional setting. There is a set menu meaning you can't choose what you want, but I thought it was fun being able to try things I might not have picked. The ladies working there were really welcoming, and I had some kind of rose soda to drink which was delicious.

It is so delicious, everything on the plate taste yummy. Great presentation and even side dish has many flavours. Place is cosy and comfy, quiet little place you can enjoy your meal. Staff is Friendly. Price is fair to me for such a high quality vegan/vegetarian food.

Very delicious traditional Japanese meal, plant-based, with variety of tofu dish. It was amazing!! Loved the atmosphere too. They only have one menu, which was rice with a thick sauce with yuba and shiitake, accompanied by few other side dishes.

Enjoyable light lunch in a quiet, cozy, and secluded atmosphere. There's only one lunch set available, but it was nice to have the yuba and fried foods. The bathroom only has a squatting toilet in case that isn't your thing.
