Kawazu-cho in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Kawazu-cho, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Kawazu-cho is best known for its early-blooming Kawazu-zakura cherry trees, which line the river in vivid pink from roughly February to early March, drawing visitors before Japan’s main sakura season begins. The town also has several natural hot springs and traditional ryokan, making it a relaxing onsen getaway on the Izu Peninsula. Nearby, the Kawazu Nanadaru (Seven Waterfalls) area offers forested walking trails, waterfalls, and views of the surrounding hills. Its coastal location and small-town feel provide a quieter alternative to larger resort areas in Shizuoka.
With favorites like CHINA Cuisine Fukurai Jun, Ebisu Island, and Seisoku-ji, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Nanadaru Onsen Hotel and Ichiban so you can get the best taste of Kawazu-cho while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
iZoo, located in Kawazu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a large indoor/outdoor zoo that specializes in reptiles and amphibians. The facility houses a variety of these creatures including iguanas, lizards, turtles and snakes. Visitors can also see an endangered Galapagos giant tortoise at iZoo. In addition to the exhibits, the zoo features a café and gift shop for visitors to enjoy.
Went on weekend ! We could take picture with a long snake and see crocodile being hand fed ! It was quite a show! Also there is a space with big turtles walking free so you gotta be careful where you walk ;) The parc itself overall is old but it didn’t stop the fun going !
Fefe — Google review
We were there on a rainy / Taifun day with a lot of Asian people with the same idea. But this was not the problem, why I only give one star! In the Zoo were a lot of animals with much more need on space than they get. The Japanese crane couple with their child had maximum 7-8 qm space. So proud and beautiful animals. But it’s get worse and worse. You can feed (for a fee of 200 Yen) land turtles, which „live“ on the floor every customer is walking on and it’s dark the hole day. When you enter the place, there were two turtles starring and not moving. They look so sad. The other turtles run to the customers for the food, so I had in my mind that they don‘t get enough food from the staff. But the worst thing I ever saw was, that you can sit or ride on a big land turtle (for a fee of 1.000 Yen). Image getting over 100 years old and a child is riding on your back. The turtles were not allowed to go in their outside space, but two really big ones tried really hard to open the door and the male staff guy pushed them - on a not good looking way - through the compound. After that the next customers came in for the ride and the photo of it. This opportunity was often used by Asian families and I was so upset about that. I‘m happy that kind of zoo is prohibited in Germany!

What an amazing find! We chanced upon this place and we had a ball of a time ! We liked that we could carry the reptiles . We also enjoyed the giant tortoises - and paid 1000yen to feed them - they roam freely around us ! You won’t regret coming here !!
Jaclyn K — Google review
My kids in love with turtles so this zoo was heaven. They can touch and feed them. They love touching different skin of reptile such as snakes, baby alligator etc. mostly it's indoor so it is not bad in rainy weather. If you like reptiles and near by this zoo please spare one hour to enjoy it.
Ghada A — Google review
Fun experience at Izoo. Not too many people. I had good interactions with turtles. They move fast if you have food in your hand. Prepare some cash to buy them spinach, it’s worth it!
Piggly W — Google review
My son and I enjoyed the iZoo very much. This place is much bigger than it appears from the entrance. We saw reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, insects & bugs, and an assortment of other great animals. Limited English display but scientific Latin names are displayed so we could Google. Great place to enjoy a few hours of learning fun!

Nice place to touch and feel the animal's. Even feed turtle's. Entrance fee seems to be bit expensive, other than that worth to visit.

Kawazu Sakura, also known as Kawazu cherry blossoms, is a stunning early blooming variety that starts flowering in early February. The blossoms are a slightly darker pink shade and were first discovered in Kawazu Town, blooming for the first time in 1966. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the cherry blossoms during both day and night along the river through the sakura avenue.
Love this place!!!! Every year around late Feb- early March the sakura here will bloom but somehow this year- 2025- it was significantly late. End of Feb and the sakuras are still in buds, even locals said this is very rare Beautiful walking path from Kawazu station along the river, there are plenty of food stalls with variety of food and the price is reasonable. People usually buy food and sit down by the river to enjoy the scene. If it were fully bloom, it would be fantastic!
Jupiter N — Google review
I visited the areas from 1Feb to 4Feb 25. It was too early to see the cherry blossom along the riverside. Flower buds were just growing on the trees and there were a few trees with a few flowers. The trees and view were still brown although wild flowers on riverbank were blooming. However there were a few trees of different species around the area were beautifully blooms. 3rd week of Feb would be a better time for visits to enjoy the pink colour view. It was quite with the festive stalls still close. It was peaceful and nice to walk without the crowd.
Frank T — Google review
Despite cherry blossoms were not a 100% due to a cold spell less than a week ago we absolutely enjoyed it. Lots of things to try from the food stalls, lots of friendly people and not many tourists.
Sabine B — Google review
We went here March 9th and cherry blossom trees are all bloomed..we had so much fun trying out food stalls…theres a lot of parking spaces that you can park..portable toilets are everywhere so thats not a problem..they have foot baths that you can pass by while walking around..we didn’t have a chance to try it coz its very popular to the locals ofcourse after a long walk of exploring everyone mostly want to try that😛..overall we enjoyed our visit here🫶
Julio S — Google review
Photos are from February 17th :) it seems like it’s going to take a few more days until we see more blooming Sakura 🌸
Naomi K — Google review
Enchanting place where you can see and feel spring in winter time. I recommend going early as the crowd seems to arrive in drives around mid day. There are pop up shops where you can different snacks and festival food. It’s 100% dog friendly. i think there were many visitors with dogs than with children ☺️Make sure you check the train schedule on the way back because the intervals are quite long for the local train. You can take the express train but make sure to buy the express train ticket, which is all reserved seat, and it’s quite pricey.
Linor B — Google review
Really pretty place and glad I was able to see some cherry blossoms during the first week of February!! The travel journey was a bit long at 2 and a half hours from Tokyo to Kawazu. But was a short walk from Kawazu station to the cherry blossom area. Which is a long stretch of cherry blossoms ☺️🌸🌸
Rachel T — Google review
We join the two days tour and vi add t this place, it is a little early to see sakura, but we still can found some (10%).of the full blossoms. It was a fun trip.

Historical landmark
The Kawazu Sakura Original Tree is a stunning cherry blossom variety that captivates visitors with its early bloom, typically from early February to early March. This enchanting tree has an interesting history, having been discovered in 1955 by a local resident who found it growing amidst weeds. Initially known as "Komine Sakura," it was renamed Kawazu Sakura in 1974. As of February 10, 2024, these blossoms were in full bloom and drew crowds eager to witness their beauty.
17’ walk from Kawazu station and it was crowded but not too crowded. The tree doesnt look giant but it is definitely a big tree with beautiful blossoms
Jupiter N — Google review
Where this tree is situated is in front of a private residence along a main road. When we arrived it wasn’t busy but then crowds of people showed up along with tour buses going by very slowly. It’s certainly an attraction and it’s a beautiful tree for sure to photograph.

Parks
Nestled in the serene landscape of the Izu Peninsula, Mine Onsen Water Spout Park is a hidden gem that offers visitors a unique experience with its remarkable natural geyser. This enchanting park features Japan's largest hot spring fountain, which has been erupting since November 22, 1920. With an impressive spout reaching heights of up to 30 meters and releasing around 600 liters of steaming water every minute, it’s a sight to behold!
A hot water geyser that was accidentally discovered years ago. If it's cold outside its worth a visit. There are metal seats warmed by the hot spring underneath so your backside says toasty warm. There is also adequate bathroom facilities. A lady sells fresh eggs out the front. There is a tradition of boiling eggs in the hot spring for 14 minutes then cooling it down for 30 seconds. You then crack the eggs open and eat them with salt provided in convenient packets. It was a fun activity. I wouldn't make a special effort to get there, but if you are in the area (or like us accidentally stumbled apon it from the steam bellowing out) it's worth a stop. The shop has really tasty Wasabi products to purchase.
Thivagar N — Google review
natural hot spring fountain amazing Mine Onsen's largest hot spring in the East was born at noon on November 22, 1920, with a roar that pierced the sky approximately 50 meters above the ground. Since then, it has continued to erupt without ceasing for over 90 years. This is an artesian fountain where 600 liters of hot spring water at 100 degrees per minute spouts up to a height of 30 meters. You can also make giant hot spring eggs and enjoy a footbath in the hot springs.
KIICHIRO K — Google review
The sakura blossom will be earlier (early Feb) than the riverside. The park is near public carparks; several minutes's walk. It is very small with a few sakura trees and a footbath. The hot water gushes out every 30min.
Mic ( — Google review
a very small place, if you have been to iceland” s geysir. this place is not worth for your trip.
Christine Z — Google review
Nice little place to stop along your road trip. The geyser didn’t go off while we were there from 3-3:45pm. Still, nice rest stop and anticipation of the geyser was exciting. We didn’t boil eggs but that’s neat, too.
ESTELL D — Google review
You can have a break in this small park which locates far away from the crowd. The show of splashing the onsen water deep under the earth occurs every 30 minutes, interesting show because of the passionate description of the staff.
Waha F — Google review
Such an adorable park tucked away at the back of a ryokan. The most friendly ladies work at the gift shop and will help to make sure us gaijins cook the onsen eggs correctly 😄 There's a nice foot bath to soak in while you enjoy your eggs next to sakura.

We stopped there to see the geyser coming up and boil some eggs (just 1.000¥). Nice break and watch the rainbow

Zoos & Aquariums
Nestled in the serene surroundings of Kawazu, Shizuoka, the体感型カエル館 KawaZoo is a hidden gem for amphibian enthusiasts. Although it's slightly off the beaten path, this charming zoo offers an impressive array of frog species and well-maintained terrariums that provide ample space for these fascinating creatures. Visitors can explore a unique rainforest room where frogs roam freely among lush foliage, making it an exciting challenge to spot them in their naturalistic habitat.
Really great amphibian zoo! It's a little off the main road but definitely worth going to if you like frogs. All of the information about them is in Japanese, I wish they included English common names on the signs as well. All of the terrariums are extremely well kept and clean, plenty of space for the frogs. Some of them are huge! I had a hard time finding some of them because of how well-hidden they were, but it was lots of fun trying. It took about an hour to get through. In the summer they have some outdoor exhibits as well but I went in the winter so those frogs were not on display.
Kyle P — Google review
The ticket for this frog zoo is included with the ticket for I-zoo reptile zoo. My husband and I have raised dart frogs in the past, so we were very interested. The frogs are in well-kept, clean enclosures and they're clearly very well fed. The only disappointment was the frog room, which is fitted out as a frog utopia with plants and running water and mist. We couldn't find a single frog in there. Maybe it's TOO comfy and the frogs are living their best life and laughing at the humans trying to find them.
Amy T — Google review
If you’re in the area and like frogs, you have to visit the KawaZoo. This small zoo specializes in amphibians, mostly frogs with some axolotl and salamanders/newts. The ticket is 1000円 but you can also get a combo ticket with the nearby lizard zoo iZoo, or a 100円 discount with one of the local bus passes. There are many exotic species of frogs from all over the world. Some are in small, bare enclosures, but most have a lot of space and vegetation and seem to be happy. There is also an outdoor section with local species, a waterfall room where they roam free, and a “lab” area where you can see many tadpoles and froglets developing. The gift shop is full of enticing frog-themed items. I’d say it takes about 1h to visit at the fastest, but if you really like frogs then count on at least 2h.
Sarah H — Google review
A complete and utter delight, absolutely fantastic, my cheeks hurt from all the smiling giggling and gasping in awe of those little froggies.

Nanadaru Onsen Hotel is a charming retreat nestled in a mountain village, providing a serene atmosphere and close proximity to nature. Additionally, the establishment offers refined dining options for a delightful culinary experience. Visitors can also explore the nearby 7 Waterfalls and enjoy the convenience of a cafe and soba restaurant in the vicinity.
Fantastic onsen hotel that I hope to be back soon. Easily accessible by train and bus. I recommend stocking up on food and drinks before coming for the night as the price of things in area is super expensive. What made this stay incredible is the friendly service, good sleeping material, and the multiple onsen rooms. After 7:30pm, you can go to each one and lock it so you can have private time. Not all onsen pools are super hot but there are those that are 🔥 which is incredible! The sound of the waterfall allowed me to sleep hard.
Daniele H — Google review
Quiet, peaceful and the private baths were great. We could even use the coolest one with our baby. The coffee from the vending machine was out of date and the staff didn't see to know what to do about it. Other than that we had a lovely stay
Lisa G — Google review
I really loved this ryokan. It feels a bit more like a two-star compared to the others I’ve stayed in mainly because the building and the stairs are a little older, but once you’re inside the room, it’s pretty much the same as the other ryokans we’ve been to. That said, the food was incredible. Both breakfast and dinner were amazing, with lots of fresh fish. The onsen was really nice too, and I liked that it stayed open pretty late (I can’t remember if it was 24 hours). Overall, it’s not as polished or “nice” as some of the others, but the location was great. It’s close to the waterfalls and the outdoor wild onsen, and for the price, it’s really solid value for money.
Yeshey T — Google review
We used this as a day spa - private onsen was very nice, we paid 3000 yen for two - but note, there is no view of waterfall at this one (onsen with waterfall view is different - Amagisoe), someone misplaced their review at wrong place There was a strong smell of cigarettes at the changing room

Fantastic location for seven falls. Hotel has many different onsen rooms that all turn into private baths after dinner. Tattoo friendly onsen! Excellent value and food was plentiful and delicious local cuisine. They even let us park our car all day for free after checking out as we went out exploring the seven falls area. Oh and a highlight was they have a private cave onsen about halfway up seven falls that you can use if you stay here. Bring a bathing suit for the cave onsen.
CJ S — Google review
We went to the Onsen by the river. It was quite exceptional, because there was no one else that time. They have to one pool down in the cave, where you can also enter the cool Kawazu Falls river down stream. Perfect adventure for us!
Sini L — Google review
Date visited: July 2023 I love this hotel, it's peaceful and you can feel very close to nature. They have nice onsens indoor and outdoor. The place is also just a few minutes away from the 7 Waterfalls. There is also a cafe and soba restaurant nearby. The price is very reasonable and the staff are very friendly and polite too. They don't accept credit cards, only cash.

we just did the 日帰り温泉 but we were surprised how good it was!! From outside it looks quite old, but the Onsen is right next to a waterfall and really beautiful! From that place it is also to do a hike to all the seven waterfalls, which takes approx. 2 hours one way. It is worth hiking to the last big waterfall.

The dining experience at Ichiban, a Chinese restaurant in Kawazu, exceeded expectations with excellent food at affordable prices. Despite the absence of an English menu, patrons found it easy to use translation apps for assistance. Highly recommended dishes include the gyoza and meat fried rice, both of which showcase the passion and effort put into their handmade preparation. Additionally, customers praised the hearty serving of meat fried rice as a satisfying dish with stir-fried meat and vegetables atop lightly fried egg.

The soba noodle shop 美よし is known for its simple and chewy buckwheat noodles with a generous portion size. One notable aspect is that the soba noodles are cooked with shiitake mushrooms, adding an extra layer of flavor.

The place is old and looks nice & there are even tables outside. It's beside the main street so it is a bit noisy of course. Had some soba and the taste was good, but not great. The other soba shops I go to are better and also cheaper. Be aware that, if there are other customers, you are going to wait long for your meal!

(Translated by Google) I remembered that the soba restaurant that served it with a single stalk of wasabi was delicious, and when I was looking at my smartphone, I found a photo of it. I found the restaurant using the location information from the photo and visited for the first time in 13 years. I think there was a small waterwheel in front of the restaurant back then? Maybe I'm remembering it wrong? The interior of the restaurant is of course the same as it was back then, and by coincidence I sat in the same seat as I did 13 years ago. Waterfalls
Nestled in the mountains above Kawazu Town in southeastern Izu, the Kawazu Seven Waterfalls (Kawazu Nanadaru) offer a delightful forest walking trail spanning approximately 1 kilometer. The trail takes about an hour and a half to complete and leads visitors past seven waterfalls ranging from 2 meters to 30 meters tall.
The hike around the waterfalls was wonderful. It’s well kept and you can take the route from either end. We took a bus to the top of the trail and did it backwards. The falls are various sizes with a couple of them busting very tall and majestic. They had a couple rock throwing challenges along the hike that were fun. You’d pay 100円 to an honesty box and then take three tries to toss the rock into a basket a ways out.

Wonderful walk along the river, gorgeous waterfalls. Mostly easy walking but some areas with lots (lots) of stairs. Can dip feet to cool down, one fall has a spring to help cool down. If you enjoy yourself at a leisurely pace, will take several hours. Or can be done quickly in probably just over an hour. If you find the hidden restaurant, go have barracuda or snapper!

A nice walk in the woods past 7 waterfalls. Most of the waterfalls are fairly small, and river access is prohibited in most areas. Not wheelchair friendly, but not a strenuous hike either. It was a nice enough stop, but wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see it either.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely breathtaking! Kawazu Seven Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots in Izu. The trail is easy to walk and perfectly maintained, winding through lush forest and crystal-clear streams. Each of the seven waterfalls has its own charm — from small cascades hidden among mossy rocks to the majestic final fall that feels straight out of a movie. The sound of rushing water, birds singing, and the fresh mountain air make it such a relaxing experience. Along the way, there are lovely cafés and small onsen inns where you can stop and enjoy a break with coffee or soft-serve ice cream. It’s also a great place to visit year-round — vibrant green in summer, fiery red leaves in autumn, and tranquil beauty in winter. If you’re in Izu, this is a must-see destination. Highly recommended for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to unwind in Japan’s natural beauty. 🌿💧

Its very beautiful and serene but its quite a treck. Lovely views overall and quite a nice shift from the busy citylife. The village where the waterfalls are is also quite cozy with a very friendly shop and an amazing udon/soba restaurant serving cheap and amazingly delicious food. If you have physical limitations or similar it could be dificult to treck through but its very beautiful for those who apreciate nature.

A wonderful series of waterfalls that are very easy to access. The trail is very well kept mostly concrete and very easy for almost any one to complete. There are a few areas with some steep steps and a wooden bridge. The falls and river are beautiful and make this well worth a visit. You can complete it easily in under an hour even if you linger a while. There is a cool area where you can attempt to land some small stones on a rock out in the river for your wish to come true. Each fall has an associated diety a story and a stamp so be sure to bring a notebook to collect the stamps! You cannot get in the water though while we were there a tour group walking the river and going over some of the falls was going by. If you are in Shimoda or any nearby town this would make an excellent trip.

It was nice to walk through the path visiting the 7 waterfalls and the volcanic rocks. I visited the walk from uphill to down starting from north toward south. It seems easier than the reverse.
Luke L — Google review
I read reviews that recommended taking the bus to the top fall and walking the trail backwards/down. This is good advice for most people. The tourist office guide in Kawazu at the bus stop saw my cane. I am 76 and have knee and hip replacements. She told me to get off at the first stop, see falls 1 to 3, backtrack and see falls 4 and 5. I did NOT follow her advice and went to the top fall to walk down. I was wrong: she was correct. The upper trail starts out nice but then there are a million steps down. I spent all my concentration on not tripping or falling. It interfered with my ability to enjoy nature. My wife and i made it. But if you are elderly with mobility issues do what the Kawazu tourist lady tried so hard to communicate to me. You are old and impaired. Accept it and enjoy what you can. Multiply picture by at least 30 times.

The Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival takes place for a month from early February when the Kawazuzakura starts to bloom. The festival features a cherry blossom-lined path along the Kawazu River, attracting numerous visitors who come to admire the flowers. Approximately 8,000 Kawazu cherry trees, with around 850 planted along a 2.5-mile stretch of the river, create a stunning display during this time.
Definitely a must visit spot to see Sakura! It's so pretty along the pathway beside the river. However, you do need to get there early to avoid the crowd. Parking do fill up quickly and it cost 1000yen. Around 11am, the parking is pretty much full. When I visited, it was full bloomed!

The Kawazu cherry blossoms (Kawazu-zakura) are a breathtaking sight and a must-see for any sakura enthusiast. Unlike the more common Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, which bloom briefly in early April, Kawazu-zakura are an early-blooming variety, appearing as early as February and lasting for about a month. Their deep pink petals and long flowering period make them particularly stunning. One of the best places to experience these blossoms is in Kawazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, where the annual Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival (河津桜まつり) transforms the town into a picturesque paradise. The trees lining the Kawazu River create a tunnel of pink, beautifully complemented by yellow nanohana (rapeseed flowers) blooming nearby. The festival atmosphere is lively, with food stalls selling regional delicacies like sakura mochi and fresh seafood. At night, the illuminated blossoms add a magical touch, making it a great experience for both daytime and evening visitors. Overall, the Kawazu cherry blossoms offer a unique and serene hanami experience, perfect for those who want to enjoy Japan’s sakura season ahead of the crowds in March and April. Whether you’re a photographer, a nature lover, or simply looking for a relaxing spring getaway, Kawazu-zakura won’t disappoint.

Old Amagi Tunnel North Side is a popular spot known for its connection to the novel Dancer of Izu. Visitors are drawn to the small light at the end of the dark tunnel, creating an irresistible allure. The road leading to the tunnel from the north is in poor condition, but still accessible by car. One of the coolest places. Feels like a real lost place. You'll walk up a street that has a little incline for quite some time and end up in front of the old tunnel. The tunnel itself has light inside but there's nobody around and, as far as I could see, no cars pass through it. Quite a spooky experience.

Japanese regional restaurant
Soba noodle shop
Wasabi Garden Kadoya is a charming spot near Kawazu Seven Falls, offering a unique dining experience. They specialize in serving dishes flavored with freshly grated wasabi, such as rice bowls topped with katsuo bushi and shochu. The restaurant provides an opportunity for visitors to turn fresh wasabi roots into paste themselves. Despite the wait times due to its popularity, the place offers reasonably priced meals ranging from soba and udon to delightful strawberry treats.
わさび丼(Wasabi don)/A bowl of rice dish covered with katsuo bushi(dried bonito flakes), topped on fresh grated Wasabi is the most key dish. That was my first time to grate an authentic Wasabi on a grater made of shark skin(shagreen). As I started to eat the rice bowl with pouring a little bit soy sauce on it, I thought that the Wasabi flavour kicks into my nose. but it was really mild. Because the bonito flakes softened its harsh flavour. The dish is really simple but really flavorful(^O^) Plus added, this eatery was used for a location shooting for a famous Japanese TV show "孤独のグルメ(Kodokuno Gourmet)Solitary connoisseur of good food".

Spacious place for soba, udon, and strawberry treats! The wasabi was excellent. There are lots of options ranging from a light meal to dessert. Very inexpensive and filling.

Nice little place near the Kawazu Seven Falls (Nanadaru). They specialize in providing fresh wasabi roots which you turn into paste yourself. You can get a variety of rice bed or soba sets. Reasonably priced but prepare for a bit of a wait (I waited 90 minutes for my table - 7 people) as it's a popular place to eat in the area.

I’ve tried wasabi and Japanese yam rice bowl. The ingredients are simple, yet fresh and unique to this area. I want everyone to taste raw wasabi!
Kuri — Google review
The restaurant appears in The Solitary Gourmet S3. The food is OK and the price is relatively low. However, the taste of the raw wasabi is not as strong as my imagination. Anyway if you are visiting Kawazu then it is worth paying a visit .
Kurz C — Google review
Just average for the taste but still worth a try for the experience. I suggest: Sign up at the book then take a walk of one hour to see the falls around. After that back to this place to Grind wasabi by yourself and have some wasabi-soba. It's refreshing both for your vision and taster.

Unagi restaurant
Okawaya is a cozy and inviting restaurant known for serving some of the best eel (unagi) in the eastern part of Japan. Unlike traditional methods, they grill their eel over charcoal, resulting in a consistent texture and a rich smoky aroma. The portions are generous, making it worth the standard price. The friendly service and homey atmosphere add to the dining experience. While it can get crowded during lunchtime, dinner offers a more intimate setting.
We got there around 6:40PM, and they close at 7. They were all so nice to let us order and eat! The grilled unagi was sooooo good!! Even if they were about to close, they still took time and grilled the fish perfectly. My picky kids love unagi from now on. Their service was also so great and warming. Very very nice small place to relax and eat after the beach.

We order 2 set of eel. Both is different taste. One is without the sauce type and the other one is grilled with sauce. Both taste nice.

It’s the most delicious unagi I have ever eaten. Cooked perfectly, it is so tender and fresh tasting. The sauce is delicious. The rice was also cooked perfectly. The service was lovely too, one of the chefs even speaks English!
Madison M — Google review
great food and service as usual! The unagi is sooooo good!!!! 😍😍😍
Wylie C — Google review
Best eel (unagi) ever, for two reasons: 1) They don't steam it but grill it, which gives it a more consistent texture and a stronger smoky aroma. 2) Although the price is standard for this specialty, the portions are a lot bigger. The place has a cozy, homey atmosphere and the service is excellent. It tends to be crowded for lunch, but we were alone for dinner! Absolutely recommendable!
Montse S — Google review
Always a favourite whenever we are in town. This time due to time and season, we only manage obento (takeout) menu. Turned out to be just as good. There's a smaller portion too which fit me well due to limited appetite. Friendly host as many noted.

Seisoku-ji, affectionately known as Kappa Temple, is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Kawazu. This temple belongs to the Kenchoji school of the Rinzai sect and offers a unique blend of spiritual tranquility and cultural richness. I had the pleasure of visiting during the vibrant Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival, where I was taken aback by the lively atmosphere filled with visitors.

Great place, the salmon was really good, and there was staff constantly around if you need something. The location isn't the biggest, so during peak time you may have to wait. It took a bit for the food to come out but you can see that they're busy so that makes sense. It's also right next door to the station so it's a great place to eat when getting off the train. The park known as Kawazu Bagatelle Park boasts a beautiful French-inspired garden that showcases an impressive collection of over 1,100 different types of roses. Along with the stunning floral displays, visitors can also enjoy the on-site shop and cafe. This well-maintained park is a must-visit destination for any nature lover or admirer of elegant gardens.
(Translated by Google) During rose season, the garden is filled with tourists, enthusiasts, and photographers alike, eager to see the beautiful and abundant variety of roses in full bloom. In addition, strolling through the garden captivates visitors with the diverse scents of roses, from sweet and vibrant to fruity. This rose garden is a sister garden of France's Bagatelle Rose Garden, and its architecture and other features evoke a French charm. The best time to see the flowers is from mid-May to late June in spring and mid-October to mid-November in autumn, with grand rose festivals held in both seasons. The garden also houses a stylish restaurant/café that's sure to appeal to women, offering a menu unique to the rose garden. I also went to an Italian restaurant with a fellow photographer (lol). Of course, it was delicious... Since you're here, you'll want to do more than just look; you'll also want to fill your stomach with delicious food. It's a great place to stop by during your trip to Izu. Highly recommended. When you go out... If you're driving... there's free parking available with space for approximately 200 cars, including large buses. If you're using public transportation... get off at Kawazu Station on the Izu Kyuko Line and take a bus or taxi, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Please do! Thank you for reading to the end. Really a perfect place in summer to swim in a natural waterfall in the middle of mountains and wood. With this heat, the cold water of the source was amazing and you have onsen if you prefer to stay in 40°C 🤓 Of course a car is really recommended to access at this place.

This fall is technically within the Amagiso public bathing area so if you want to see the entire length you have to use the baths. You can see the fall itself from the entrance to the baths. The old lady manning the station is lovely. If no one is using the baths and you ask her nicely (no one here speaks English), she may allow you into the first area where the changing rooms are to see the fall up close.

An incredible, gorgeous waterfall. And the area around it is so lush and peaceful. We didn’t bring our swimsuits, but it looked like a lot of fun to swim in the pools near the water with the waterfall in the background. If we went back, I’d make mean effort to swim for sure.

One and only waterfall in the seven waterfall that is very commercialized and needing to pay to visit. It is oddly away from the other 6 waterfalls from the trail. Quite a disappointment thou it was the biggest one. Quite a long walk just to get to the look out...

Food was not too bad!! Yummy tempura and got the set which came with either soba or udon. You could choose it to be hot or cold. Got the cold soba. Very near kawazu station which made it convienant to travel back to Tokyo.

So glad we stopped in here. It’s a cozy soba and udon shop that does tempura as well. We all had the “tendon” tempura bowl and we all loved it. It came with a nice variety of vegetables along with two shrimps. Highly recommend

Day 4

Keep it simple
For day 4, these 4 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in Kawazu-cho. Start the day with Ebisu Island and make your way through the city to get to Yakata Bridge. This should take about 7 hours of your day.

Izu Peninsula Geopark is a stunning coastal area in Shizuoka, Japan, known for its dramatic rock formations shaped by ash and lava. This resort area offers onsen hot spring towns, historical sites like the Toi gold and silver mine, and Shimoda, where Japan's isolation ended. The peninsula's beaches provide a timeless escape with crystal-clear waters and subtropical greenery. Shimoda is a favorite spot for ocean views, water sports, and delicious cuisine.
A.small island you can walk to by crossing a little bridge. There are a few parking spots but it looks like most people only visit for 10-15 minutes, so just wait until a spot becomes available. The island has a small shrine, a lighthouse and some viewpoints.

Nice diversion, particularly if you're into geology. The volcanic action and pyroclastic flows are in stark relief. Small shrine on top, but I recommend the sea level walk around which only takes 10 minutes. Free parking.
Douglas A — Google review
Great place for snorkelling. I went today lots of moray eels, fish of all kinds, anemones, small soft corals and a few hard corals. The current under the bridge is strong, only go there if you are more experienced. Today we had crystal clear waters. Also hot shower and changing room available.

Interesting place. Beautiful formations of rock due to volcanic movements. Fishing is allowed, it has toilet and few parking area. I’ve spent here 2hrs just observing the ocean, I was amazed by the rock’s formation.

Nice little island to walk around. Be aware that the walkway can get waves over it on a high tide or bad weather. The top of the island is very overgrown and the view is limited.

The shore with clear blue water is just beautiful and the rocks look interesting. You can climb up the rocks if you are brave enough and have fun up there at the little room in the rock. But we were in the ridiculous ly strong wind for sure 🙈😂😇

Outdoor Activities
Kawazuhama Beach, located in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, is a serene and less crowded spot that offers a peaceful retreat. Visitors can enjoy the stunning Kawazu zakura blossoms along the Kawazu River before reaching the beach. The breakwater ensures gentle waves and a tranquil atmosphere. While not a typical sandy beach, it boasts natural beauty with its unique coastline featuring rocks and pebbles.
Not a swimming beach but i enjoyed my time dipping my feet there. There are quite a lot of items getting washed up Shore including junk, seaweed, wood shreds, shells, dead sea lives, Corals, etc... can go on a treasure hunt and you may find something you like
Luke L — Google review
After a leisurely 3-kilometer-walk of enjoying the cherry blossoms along the Kawazu River, we reached Kawazuhama Beach where the breakwater offshore ensures a peaceful beach with gently lapping waves. Kawazuhama Beach (Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan), is not well known, which helps keeps the crowds to a minimum. The beach itself is not that big, but offers a chance to take some nice sunrise photos or maybe even have a barbecue during summer. Although driving to the beach offers opportunities to see more of the local area (162 km southwest of Tokyo), you can easily reach the beach within a 6-minute walk of Kawazu Station on the JR Izukyuko Line.
Daisei ( — Google review
I went here the first week of march and so many people are here. They enjoy the Kawazu zakura and then enjoy lunch at the beach. Saw many family bring their picnic basket and mat and enjoy the sun and breeze at the beach while enjoying lunch and the kids run around playing with water. The scenery is okay. The water is blue but it is not a white sand. I hope people (especially foreigners) are more conscious about leaving trash in here since the cleaning staff looks so tired picking up trash. Anyway a great place and deffinitely want to visit here again!

(Translated by Google) There's nothing here. Although it is supposed to be a beach, it is only a dirty sandy beach full of garbage. There are no rocky shores, just artificial wave-dissipating blocks. You can enter from the side of the entrance to the hot spring hotel Kaiyutei, but there is no fence at the mouth of the Kawazu River, so please refrain from testing your mettle in groups with flashlights in hand in the middle of the night. If you fall two meters down the cliff, you will die if you do something wrong. You just become a ghost. When you look at Kaiyutei from the coast, you can see the guests eating. It's very awkward. The impressions of people who visited during the cherry blossom festival are generally as follows. In the summer, it might start to look a little more like a beach.

Kawazu Station is a charming rural railway station located in Shizuoka, Japan. It is known for the Kawazu-zakura Festival held annually from February 10 to March 10, where the Kawazu River is lined with beautiful cherry blossoms for several kilometers. The festival attracts tourists with around 150 stalls and a lively atmosphere.

Small station but they do have luggage storage (coins only as of September 2024). You can get change at the ticket booth but it opens at 9 am. We used one of the drink machines in the station for change. Bathrooms are on the outside. There is a woman at a kiosk near the bus station that was very helpful with copies of the bus schedule. Also there is a 711 across the street

Kuwazu Station in Shizuoka is a charming rural railway station that offers a nostalgic and authentic Japanese countryside experience. As a traveler seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations, I was drawn to this quaint station, and it left an indelible impression. Nestled amidst lush green fields and picturesque landscapes, Kuwazu Station's tranquil setting immediately transported me back to a simpler time. The station's traditional wooden architecture and well-preserved vintage appearance exude a timeless charm, making it a delightful sight for both history buffs and photography enthusiasts. The station's limited train service schedule added to its rustic appeal, reflecting the unhurried pace of life in the countryside. Despite its small size, the station staff was warm and welcoming, embodying the spirit of Japanese hospitality. Adjacent to the station, I discovered the "Yui Rail Walk" pathway, a scenic route that meanders through the picturesque countryside, providing an opportunity to immerse myself in the natural beauty of Shizuoka. Kuwazu Station is more than just a transit point; it serves as a gateway to the traditional rural life of Japan. The unspoiled surroundings and peaceful ambiance create a perfect setting for contemplation and relaxation. In conclusion, Kuwazu Station in Shizuoka is a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the timeless charm of rural Japan. Its serene and nostalgic atmosphere, combined with the beautiful countryside, make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an authentic and tranquil experience. Whether you're a railway enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Kuwazu Station promises an unforgettable journey through the soul-stirring landscapes of Shizuoka.

Get extremely crowded in the sakura season. The station is a bit old and there is no toilet inside the gate. You can find toilet outside. The IC Card charge machine can only accept ¥1000 each time so if you need to charge your IC card more than one thousand yen, you need to do it several time. The atmosphere is authentic and the food reflects the rich flavors of Africa, delighting the taste buds. It caters to both children and adults with its diverse menu options that leave everyone happy. The owner is incredibly kind, surprising young diners with a delightful treat at the end of their meal.
Time for a break from Japanese food? This Senegalese cafe has hearty meat and vegetable dishes with rice or couscous. Mutton and chicken are favorites. Really tasty and melt in the mouth. The fries were well worth ¥500 as well. Just of the highway in Kawazu. They sell African products as well. Lots of space, big tables. Plenty of parking.

lovely flavours! mafé, the peanut stew, was fantastic! the mutton had a great gamey flavour — which i enjoy — and had a good amount of fat attached. sauce is rather dense and portions are big, so it'll fill ya up. the couscous's deep caramelized onion sauce was delectable. the chicken leg is no slouch either — tender and flavorful. beef fataya was good and the spicy condiment paired well, but i don't know if it's ¥500 good. bissap was quite tart and cut through the rich flavours of the food very well. great balance with the meal. baobab juice was nutty, earthy, and tasted like it was spiced. thick and a bit gritty but good too. service was slow, but the dudes were friendly. low 4 star rating: very good

Please come visit during the cherry blossom season. Admission fee is 200 yen. Take off your shoes and pay at the reception desk at the temple. I bought sweet tea as a souvenir. Hatsukei Falls is a captivating gem nestled within the Kawazu Seven Falls, a scenic walking route that showcases an array of stunning waterfalls and lush green forests. Located centrally among the seven falls, Hatsukei can be reached with a leisurely 10-minute stroll from the nearby road along the picturesque Nanataki Promenade. As you explore this enchanting area, you'll encounter not only breathtaking views but also opportunities to visit local hot springs and historic sites.
(Translated by Google) It is one of the Kawazu Seven Falls. From downstream, there are Otaki, Deai Falls, and Kani Falls, and this Hatsukyo Falls is located right in the middle of the seven waterfalls. You can see it if you walk for about 10 minutes from the road into a place like Nanataki Promenade. If you want to see the next three waterfalls, you'll have to climb the apparently tiring-looking stairs that tower next to Hatsukyo Falls and then walk further. (So I gave up here. I didn't have time) Unlike Otaki, Hatsukyo Falls does not have a viewing platform or anything like that, and you can walk right in front of it. There is a fair drop and there are three streams, so it's quite a sight to see up close. Deai Falls and Kani Falls seemed to have a "small drop" feeling that made me wonder, "Is this...a waterfall...?", so I was suddenly caught off guard. Hebi-daru Falls, also known as Snake Waterfall, is a unique and impressive natural wonder located in the Kawazu Seven Falls area. The waterfall stands out due to its distinctive features, including a height of 3m, width of 2m, and length of 25m. As visitors follow the path towards the falls, they will encounter wooden stairs and suspension bridges that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

(Translated by Google) One of the seven waterfalls in Kawazu. The name comes from the lava rocks called columnar joints around the waterfall that look like snake scales. It's hard to understand the origin of the name when you look at it from the front, but when you look down from Kawazu Odoriko Takimibashi, a rare wavy suspension bridge located a little upstream of the waterfall, it looks different from the front, and looks like a snake. You can enjoy the view of the river as it undulates. (Translated by Google) Hebi-taki Falls is one of the Kawazu Seven Waterfalls. The Kawazu Seven Waterfalls are a valley lined with waterfalls of various sizes along a 2km stretch upstream of the Kawazu River. Approximately 25,000 years ago, lava flowed down the southern slope of Mount Noborio, one of the eastern Izu volcanoes, during an eruption. This flow filled the Kawazu River, and the subsequent water flow eroded the valley, creating the seven waterfalls. In Kawazu, the word for waterfall (taki) is pronounced "taru," derived from the Japanese character for "water dripping," and "hebi-taki" (hebi falls) is pronounced "hebidaru." Hebi-taki Falls is 3m high and 2m wide, and was named after the cross-section of the basalt columnar joints, which have been eroded by water and polished to resemble snake scales. On the right bank downstream of Hebi-taki Falls, you can see the bedrock tuff (a product of an underwater volcano), and above it you can see traces of the lava flow from Onami Volcano undulating to avoid the product of the underwater volcano, which also undulates like a snake. Saruta Depth, located upstream of the Kawazu Seven Falls, offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere with its flowing water cascading through large and small pools. The area is less visited due to the numerous stairs and suspension bridges, but it provides a beautiful promenade for nature enthusiasts. The name 'Sarutabuchi' is said to have originated from a mythological figure catching a yamame trout.
This is the river area above the 7th waterfall. Beautiful blue stream and peaceful surroundings. Take the extra 10 minutes to visit. There are a couple hundred more steps to get there and another cool suspension bridge. Enjoyed looking at the salamanders near the stream.

Most people have not visited Sarutabuchi. There are too many stairs and suspension bridges. However, below the new stairs we walked this time, we can see the old stone steps. In the past, people used to walk around this waterfall on slippery stone steps. If you are exhausted after coming this far, you can go to the upper road and take a bus from the Mizutaki bus stop to the Nanataki parking lot. However, there are quite a few stairs to climb up to the road, so I go down the way I came. It's definitely more comfortable going down. 舟戸の番屋 is a tranquil hot spring facility that offers open-air baths and a foot bath. It also features a shop where guests can purchase various products. During the popular Golden Week, visitors can enjoy the serenity of this place while indulging in delicious meals. The seafood set meal, which includes BBQ with added scallops, and the dried fish set meal are highly recommended. The juicy dried fish baked on seven wheels is particularly delightful.
Very bare bones, bring your own towel or they have them available for purchase for 200円. Onsen itself is just 300円. No one else came when I was there so it was like having a private onsen. Extremely interesting experience. Bring your onsen towel and soap! (But if you forget it, you can buy it there). ¥300 entrance fee. Go up some steps outside and enter the changing room hut. Very basic. Paid coin lockers available. Only 1 mini “shower” (or rather tap) before entering the onsen. Stunning views from a clean, wooden bathtub. It’s nestled into the rocks / cliffside. What a great experience! It can get a little bit crowded as it’s quite small.
