Points of Interest & Landmarks
Wittenberger Marktplatz is a delightful square that captures the essence of history and charm. Surrounded by vibrant, historical buildings, it features notable landmarks such as the impressive Rathaus (Town Hall), Clack Theatre, and a Science Center museum. Visitors can admire two bronze statues honoring Martin Luther and his close associate Philipp Melanchthon, both pivotal figures in the Reformation.
It's a public square, so expect all that space. That big silver ball in the corner was cute. The little relief map on the SE corner was also interesting.

Nice little town about an hour and a half from train ride from Berlin. Lots of beautiful architecture and history of Martin Luther. Went for the Christmas market though. It was a nice getaway.
Manny M — Google review
Traditional Christmas Market. A great place for Gluhwein, Bratwurst and other traditional tasties......even fish and chips!! All this and a ferris wheel under the the shadow of the Stadtkirche where Martin Luther used to preach and the Town Hall in the main market place. A Charming town and world heritage UNESCO site.

I can't say much about the shopping here since everything was closed until the tourist season starts, but it is a nice town with a lot of shops and historical sights. It was fun to just walk around it.
Shaleena Q — Google review
The time I went was quiet and not many people were walking around. Nevertheless it was fun just by walking around to see the historical building. There were shoplots just along the way with choices of food, ice cream, souvenirs, etc.

Amazing theathre with amazing staff. The city and cafe were not crowded, the tea and cake were tasteful. The staff guided us to sit on the balcony with a view over the city. Highly recommended even on days when they are not having shows.

Lutheran church
All Saints' Church, or Schlosskirche, is a stunning Gothic structure nestled in the heart of Wittenberg, Germany. This iconic church holds immense historical significance as the place where Martin Luther famously affixed his Ninety-five Theses to its door on October 31, 1517—an act that ignited the Protestant Reformation. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites known as the Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg, it attracts visitors from around the globe.
Magic place. 95 thesis changed the world. Martin Luther inspired the human kingdom.
Hartmut Z — Google review
Beautiful and historical place. Great exebition and the view from the tower is amazing. Just 295 steps and you're there!

A beautiful church, and the resting place of Martin Luther. Very interesting to see the doors where Luther nailed the 95 theses and set the reformation in motion.
Zack D — Google review
What a cool piece of history. It was good to walk and see where Protestant history was made. It was also a surprise to us at how cool the town is! You can definitely spend the day going into shops and eating at restaurants.
Mark P — Google review
This is the church where Martin Luther placed his 95 theses on the doors of the church that started the reformation.
Paul T — Google review
Visiting this place is definitely a must! Located at the end of the main street of the historical area of Wittenberg, this place is of extreme value not only because at one of his doors Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis, but also because his grave is inside the temple, at the back, under the organ pipes. The entrance is free. Take your time to admire every single detail of this treasure building in terms of architecture. Highly recommend. Ask for a guided tour, it will broaden your experience! Also, you can go up in the tower for 3 €, where you will have great views of the city.
Melvin D — Google review
This church is famous as the place where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses in 1517, sparking the Protestant Reformation. Luther's translation of the Bible into German in Wittenberg strengthened standard German and influenced German literacy and culture. This church became a symbol of resistance against the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and received support from German princes, strengthening Lutheranism as a political force.
Reformindo — Google review
Absolutely fascinating. Excellent museum to be found attached to the church, with some of the best audio visual demonstrations I have seen, by that I mean they are easy to use and in several different languages and capable of being tailored to suit the user (eg magnified if you don't have your glasses :-) ). The Tower is well worth the climb with magnificent views over the city and surrounding countryside. Martin Luther's grave is in this church and this is the church he nailed his famous theses to.

We loved this little zoo! It's free to visit or give a donation. We were pleasantly surprised by the number and variety of animals in a small park zoo, and many animals we had never seen before. Worth dropping by while you're in Lutherstadt Wittenberg!

Good amount of different animals to see add you can interact with some and buy food to feed them. Certainly worth a visit if you are in the area, as it is small or doesn't take much time out of your day.

An extremely depressing experience. The cages are far too small. The animals look stressed. The monkeys, the birds, even the fish... they all have just enough space to breathe, let alone play and live well. It shouldn't be allowed. It was a sad tour.

The ARSENAL shopping center is a charming and compact retail hub featuring a diverse collection of both international and local brands. Patrons of all ages were seen enjoying the well-maintained premises. However, some visitors were disappointed to find that certain cafes did not accept card payments. The lack of an ATM was also noted, though it can be found near a bakery and florist at the REWE end, across from a pizza vendor.

Lovely small shopping centre with a range of international brands plus more local shops too. Was being well used by a wide range of ages and was very clean. I was disappointed that the food cafés I wanted to try and get some lunch at didn't accept a card, and the information board in the shopping centre didn't locate an ATM (it's between a bakers and a florist at the REWE end opposite a pizza vendor), but once I got some cash I was able to buy food which was good and tasty. I would visit again.

Lutherhaus in Wittenberg is the former Augustinian monastery where Martin Luther resided as a teacher-monk and later after its dissolution. The museum chronologically outlines major milestones in Luther's career, offering an informative look at his life and religious legacy. It serves as a living history of Christian Reformation and is considered one of the most important museums to visit in Wittenberg. The well-designed explanations by guides and signboards make it a great historical place to explore.
The main Lutherhaus is closed for renovation until 2025. But the courtyard is still open. The Literally Luther exhibition in Luther Museen, adjacent to the Lutherhaus is open. It is an excellent exhibit on Luther's life and his reformation legacy. It also has a great activity section for children on the third floor.
AXZ — Google review
The main Lutherhaus is currently temporarily closed but we could visit the absorbing exhibition Literally Luther (Buchstäblich Luther). It gave lots of insight into Luther the person rather than as church reformer. The attached photos are from the exhibition as seen in May 2025.
Ann M — Google review
Unfortunately the house-part was closed because of renovation!!:((( ( In Germany they renovate a lot of things in the high season!!!!) But there was another exhibition in the other part of the ex-monastery. The building is amazing and the exhibition is very interesting. I got a lot of new information about the group who worked with Luther they made me imagine how they translated the Bible. I can recommend if you are in Wittenberg!
Gabriella S — Google review

Damian C — Google review
A very important stop while visit Wittenberg! Located at the beginning of the main street of the historical area, Lutherhaus will transport you in time to experience what people at that time use in their daily lives. Also, this museum has a largr collection of Luther's writings and pictures. The house also tries to portray and explain the living conditions of that period. The house, plus Luther's sayings as well as the whole collection of objects will give you a better understanding of the life of one of the important figures of the reformation. Highly recommend. Single ticket 8 €, combined ticket 10 € (Luther House + Melanchthon House )
Melvin D — Google review
Closed for Reno but one can still walk into the courtyard and they've put up a comical history of Martin Luther's marriage.
Paul T — Google review
Really informative museum of Luther’s life and religious legacy. You can find the house after walking through this large stone gate - picture added. The museum itself chronologically outlines major milestones in Luther’s “career”, you could say. It is astounding to see what one person’s courage could do for an entire religion.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Lutherstadt Wittenberg, "Wittenberger Kartoffelhaus Zum Schwarzen Bär" is a delightful culinary gem that specializes in hearty potato dishes. During our cycling adventure to Berlin, we were eager to try a Kartoffelhaus and this spot did not disappoint! The friendly staff made us feel right at home, even with our limited German. We indulged in their renowned potatoes alongside smoked pork, sauerkraut, and potato noodles—each bite was simply divine!
We really enjoyed our stay there. The meat dishes were very tasty and the portions are huge. Also the service was very nice and friendly. We would love to come back again!
Alisa P — Google review
The Kartoffelhaus restaurant was warmly recommended to me by my hotel receptionist. Having browsed their website it states they don't use convenience (aka industrial) products so encouraged by the positive reviews I had to try it out. I was lucky to find a table by the window on a Sunday (probably because it was rainy and in the late afternoon). The chairs at the table are ancient and probably belong in the city's museum because they make unpleasant noises at the slightest movement. The potato 🥔 soup was extremely salty so I returned it to the kitchen. The kind waitresses (I found the service on both visits to be overall superb) took it off the bill without me asking which was a nice gesture. The chicken with potato spätzle and rich cream was delicious but the only vegetable in it was canned mushrooms. It is the end of May and this region has fantastic fresh mushrooms that are also cheap at the farmer's market. That they don't use them says more about the average profile of their customers than it says about them. The kaiserschmarnn with cherries 🍒was a mixed experience. It was a very generous portion and the cherries were delicious but the rest was very dry and uninspiring. It was edible but not remotely resembling the rich and buttery kaiserschmarnn I used to eat as a child on skiing trips in Kitzbühl, Austria 🇦🇹 Today I was the first customer a few minutes before 11 am. I ordered a rump steak and a jacket potato with herb butter. The steak was a fairly good quality piece of meat but it was grilled yesterday and only slightly warmed. I had a runny bowl at 15:30 today possibly a result of the steak kept at room temperature for many hours but I also drank two coffees and ate a cake 🍰 in a cafe in town so I will give the Kartoffelhaus the benefit of the doubt. It had a lot of salt granules over it. Luckily it was not covered in a sauce because the latter would probably have been so salty it would render the steak inedible. The jacket potato was tasty but the butter is not great. The amount of herb butter on the table must have been over 250 grams which is an amount even five people would struggle with let alone one. I would much prefer lesser quantity and higher quality butter. Whatever happened to the German saying "Weniger ist mehr"? It is a question I will leave you to ponder on but as for me I will stick to eating only Asian food when in Germany because the age of culinary miracles here seems to have ended sometime in the late 20th century.
Budmil B — Google review
Insanely great food with extremely generous portions. All of the staff were very pleasant and kind. I highly recommend this place!
Jonathan L — Google review
I visited here with my dad on a day out, the staff were very friendly and accommodating, as we didnt speak german, and helpers us out when we needed it. Their potatoes (which they said were Wittenbergs specialty) lived up to the expectations and were delicious! I had the smoked pork, sauerkraut and potato noodles which were divine. And my dad got the herring salad. the bill came to under 50 euros for 2 huge main meals, a side, 2 beers, 2 soft drinks and a coffee. If that’s not value I don’t do now what is!
David O — Google review
The food and Drink were very nice, I can say it was the best fries I have ever had, but the restaurant itself is designed too crazy busy with old stuff, also the staff is not that friendly, it can be because of them being too a few waiters or having too much work!
Persian ( — Google review
A classic German restaurant that's very popular. Due to its popularity, especially for larger groups, reservations are recommended. The food is quite tasty, and they have a good selection of gluten-free options. Another highlight is their experimental Aperol Spritz variants, such as the Maracuja flavor.
Adrian P — Google review
When you visit Wittenberg you should definitely have one of your dinners here! Restaurant is always (even in the winter) full, therefore you should make a reservation before you go. You can try 40, 64 as a main course and 74 as a dessert. You would like it. Good humoured staff who are able to speak English and a very nice ambiance.

(Translated by Google) If we could, we would give 10 stars. Today I went to this Spanish restaurant for the first time with my boyfriend. As soon as we arrived we were warmly welcomed by the waiter, who I think was the boss. He immediately apologized that his chef was stuck in traffic and that we might have to wait a bit as he had to get everything up and running first. That was absolutely no problem for us. He brought us the menus and immediately pointed out the dishes that he couldn't offer due to a lack of products. That wasn't bad at all either. After we made our selection, he came back to our table to check the order because our note was not clear. It's better to ask questions rather than have something go wrong, those were his words too. We found that very correct, not everyone does that. As a greeting from the kitchen we received a delicious baguette with aioli and olives. That was really great. Overall, the food was a 1000 out of 100. We give great praise to the kitchen. It was perfect and everything tasted great. The atmosphere and design of the restaurant as well as the warm and passionate service made the experience even better. The toilets were also immaculate; There was even hairspray in the bathroom for women, which I think is very good. We will come back with a clear conscience to try more delicacies.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the service staff do a great job to make this evening unforgettable. Of course we're not in a chip shop here and so the prices are justified. Everyone wants to be paid for good work. Thanks to the entire Bodega team. (Original) Wer mal was besonderes möchte ist genau richtig hier. Restaurant MARKT NEUN is a popular eatery where customers can enjoy a delicious meal in a pleasant atmosphere. The staff members are extremely polite and amiable, ensuring that diners feel welcomed and comfortable throughout their visit. Although the menu may not offer an extensive variety of options, the dishes served are of excellent quality and prepared using fresh ingredients. Customers appreciate the delectable flavors and commend the restaurant's commitment to delivering tasty food.
Perfect. The food was amazing, organic ingredients homemade delicious food. The atmosphere was amazing the guys were super friendly and were fluent in German and English. Would definitely recommend all the food especially the Calamari fritti and Baunfurstuck. The music and everything was just perfect. Would definitely visit if you're in Wittenberg. They have a nice range of variety of food and drinks to select from for vegetarian for example. The restaurant is also Halal. The Toilets, tables and everything was very clean and it was very spacious. 0 complains regarding the place it was completely perfect. Best restaurant I've ever eaten.10/10.

A disaster experience not to be repeated. Waited over 75 minutes for the food (just two soups and the kids menu). Food was below average (2 days bread with the soup and overcooked Spargel) and at high prices (main courses 24.90€) on top with terrible service. Don’t recommend it!

Very poor service and food, a Tilapia filet was serverd as a Zander filet. While an elderly man who was obviously family member of the waitress was making very loud telephone calls with his phone on the speaker all evening. We will definitely never come here again

Nice-looking restaurant in the heart of the city. Unfortunately, the service did not live up to the standard we expected from such a place. The lady was rather bored. Not even a smile. We ordered a drink, which was nice, but she didn’t ask if we wanted food and never came to check on us, despite us being the only guests at the time (around 11 a.m. on a Sunday). Maybe that alone should have been telling. We ended up not having lunch despite having planned to, but it seemed like a better idea to just move on to another place. Overall, not a good experience.

Waitress was rude and the glass dirty. After sitting down, I received a call I had too take. When the waitress came to take the order she interrupted my call, so I told her if she could wait a few minutes. When she brought the coffee for my friend I finished my call and was ready to order, but she ignored me. Only after 15 minutes I was able to get her attention and the glass in which she finally brought the soda I ordered was dirty. That's why this restaurant was a completely unpleasant visit for me.

Luther 1517 - Wittenberg 360 ° is a panoramic installation by artist Yadegar Asisi that commemorates the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's historic act. The artwork depicts scenes from Luther's life and the impact of his actions on religious faith. Visitors can climb a viewing platform to observe the massive artwork and spot figures like Martin Luther, Katharina von Bora, Philipp Melanchthon, and Lucas Cranach.
I was not familiar with this piece or art or the artist, but it was well worth the trip. A truly fascinating, albeit not in any way comprehensive, examination of the life and times of Martin Luther.
MrOrangeVest — Google review
This is a giant 360 degree wraparound picture with lifesize people representing a typical? day in Wittenberg during Luther's time. Though interesting it is vastly overpriced and I would think many visitors would feel somewhat cheated. It would hold the interest of the average child/ teen for 5 - 10 mins tops.
T L — Google review
If you don't know much about Luther and the church and society in 1500 then this is a good easy-to-understand introduction. Good starting point before going to the 'real' sites in the town.
Ellie C — Google review
Per se it’s really cool, BUT only 4 Stars because you cannot really enjoy the time travel, as there is smth else happening on the main speakers at the same time which distracts you from your headphones. The pictures are great, lights and music effects really immersive, but it’s like you’re doing 2 different things at the same time. It should be better organized. Maybe with time slots so that noises/music/story work together. Like this it’s just messy.
Dario B — Google review
Well worth the ticket. Even better go to the info center and buy a day pass and get all the site free. In addition go tge the Panama house

We didn’t know what to expect, but the results were amazing. We could’ve spent a lot of time here. There were so many different things depicted from all different angles. The tour helps to explain things I would’ve missed. The building was cool from the heat.

Good interactive way of learning about the Protestant Reformation. English audio guide is available
Kevin C — Google review
I feel that it was bit a waste of time and money, like a typical tourist trap. While the idea is great, the execution suffers. It also feels that the creators were compelled to deliver more content to justify the overinflated entrance fee. So they put so much information in the audio guide that it became way too long and even boring at times if you are not very deeply into the Luther history. The ambient music and noises were often overpowering and interfered with the audio guide itself. The light goes dark on regular basis, which looks pretty but you cannot see the picture anymore and you have no idea what the audio guide is talking about. On the positive side, the composite picture presented on the wall is quite impressive. Please indulge yourself by going to the top platform to fully appreciate its beauty.

Stadtkirche Wittenberg, also known as Stadt- und Pfarrkirche St Marien, holds significant historical and religious importance as the birthplace of Martin Luther's Protestant movement. The church features art and artifacts related to Luther and the Reformation, including a memorial for local soldiers who perished in World War I. Its beautiful architecture and rich history make it a must-see attraction in Wittenberg, often overshadowed by the Castle Church.

Among the Martin Luther and Reformation related art and artifacts is this memorial to those local soldiers killed in the First World War. Apart from the language no different to those in a thousand British churches. Reminds us that it's ordinary citizens who always do the dying in a war.

Melanchthonhaus is a museum located in Wittenberg, occupying the former living quarters of Philipp Melanchthon, an influential figure who worked closely with Martin Luther. The museum offers a glimpse into the historical context and lifestyle of that era, showcasing a collection of period clothing and providing detailed descriptions of the house and its rooms. It also delves into the relationship between Melanchthon and Luther. Visitors interested in church reform and its co-reformers will find this museum particularly engaging.
For me one of the most essential museum to see, enjoy. Because you will find out several aspects of Phillip Melanchton life, work and much more. Really enriched me to visit this place. I have to recommend to all...it is also English friendly inside. I was there right on the Reformation Day= 31st of October 2024.

Really cute. I liked the renovation in a contemporary style. And the possibility of going in the garden and the terrace. Not overwhelming though, that’s why only 4 stars.
Dario B — Google review
This is the house of Philip Melanchthon, part of the Luther Museums. Melanchtlon "was a German Lutheran reformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation, an intellectual leader of the Lutheran Reformation" according to Wikipedia. According to the museum website "One of the most beautiful residences in Wittenberg was built for the scholar Philipp Melanchthon by Elector John Frederick I in 1536. He built the house to commit the scholar to staying on as a professor at his university. The impressive house offered ample space for Melanchthon and his family, as well as numerous students. He lived here until his death in 1560. In the historic Melanchthon House you can literally walk in the footsteps of one of the most important protagonists of the Wittenberg Reformation. The house has barely changed over the centuries. "
AXZ — Google review
Recommended for people interested in the church reform and its co-reformers, wheelchair accessible I'm very linked to the church reform which today is nearly completely put to Martin Luther. This is why I like the fact that the Melanchtonhaus offers an insight into another reformer who supported Luther in many ways. I got to know a couple of things I hadn't know, although I am into the topic. Only four stars because it's not signposted in English and because the first, actually original building does not show any original objects. These are to be found in the modern part. I assume for conservation purposes. Still, it feels strange... I loved it anyway...
Sarah J — Google review
Another good place to visit while visiting Wittenberg. Your stop at this place will complement your understanding of the life style and historical context of Martin Luther. There is a collection of objects, including clothes of that time, as well as a good description of the house and its rooms. Also, a short story about Melanchthon and his relation with Martin Luther. There are individuals tickets, however I recommend getting a combined ticket of Lutherhouse and Melanchthonhaus for 10 €.

(Translated by Google) The swimming pool is truly beautiful. The only disappointing thing was the reception. We arrived with World Heritage cards and wanted to redeem them. The lady sent us in without them because her computer hadn't booted up yet. When we wanted to go home, she told us the cards wouldn't work. This was completely incomprehensible to us, as we've had the pleasure of using the cards several times before. I was also completely unaware when the lady told us that they had to be validated at the town hall. I got the impression that she didn't know how to use her system to validate the cards and then told us such nonsense.

Comfy, nice staff, diverse food I must admit, I was sceptical when I saw the announcement outside about good breakfast and waffles and tarts because the Independent looks rather like an evening pub with plenty of spirits at the bar. I think one and only restaurant in Wittenberg with great selection of burgers. Everything fresh and tasty, many places to sit inside and outside. Very good and quick service.

The burgers are delicious but the fries are (as is almost always the case in Germany) problematic. I asked the friendly waitress that they are prepared with less salt and they were quite salty (I don't want to think what they would taste like had I not asked). I opted for the sweet potatoes because I thought they are impossible to industrialise. Alas, they are pre packaged potatoes fried in deep oil. I yearn for the day restaurants in Germany will serve freshly cut and nutritious potatoes just as they do in many other countries but as I only have 25 to 35 years left to live it probably won't happen in my lifetime.

Awesome Canadier Burger with goat cheese. The waitress was polite and accommodating. The food arrived quickly. Overall, a great experience. I just had a burger and a cola.

A great, warm spot on a very cold and snowy day. The winter special burger was fantastic as was the hot apple drink. Highly recommend this restaurant.

We enjoyed our dinner here very much. Sweet potato fries is nice. Burger is very juicy and big! I can finally taste real food after 10 days here in Germany. Customer service is A+! Very friendly and ready to help. Also able to converse in English which is a plus. Definitely a must try when in Wittenberg!

We ordered 2 "Wittenburgers", 2 plates of potato, and 2 cocktails by 52€. The burger was delicious and juicy. They surved the dip sauce in small waffle cups, which gives them an extra point for sustainability. the hospitality was super nice. The staff speaks english and german. The environment was cozy. Recommended for Lutherstadt Wittenberg visitors.

Great choice of food in this restaurant offering a lot of varied food options from indian to mexican to american grill.. Great service, the replaced the wine which was passed.

Great service but the menu is heavily influenced by German culinary "improvisations". The meat is not bad but the way it is served shows that the cooks are not really aware of how to properly handle a proper beef steak.

AMAZING food and client service. We're not speaking German but the staff was very friendly and helpful with the necessary translation. Definitely recommend!
