Nestled in the verdant Miyazaki Prefecture of Kyushu, Takachiho Gorge is a stunning river canyon that captivates visitors with its sheer basalt cliffs and mesmerizing waterfalls. This National Place of Scenic Beauty offers an unforgettable experience as you glide along the tranquil waters in rented boats or stroll along a well-maintained path. The highlight is undoubtedly Manai Falls, where water cascades dramatically over the rocks, creating a picturesque scene that feels straight out of a postcard.
Beautiful gorge – absolutely worth a visit. If you’d like to rent a boat, be sure to book at least 3–4 days in advance (10 days is even safer). If you’re just coming for the hike along the scenic path, you can arrive anytime. Bonus tip: after 17:00, parking is free while the site remains open.

Very beautiful. A bit difficult to get down and up if you are not with a tour group or have a vehicle, we ended up walking both ways which was fine. It is incredibly beautiful, don’t worry about the boats they are more gimmick then Anything. When we were there they weren’t letting boats out as it was raining, but it seems to rain a lot here so I would say forget the boats, nice thing if it happens but it is not the main attraction and you can see the same waterfall from a ton of angles. The real beauty and magic is walking the trails along the gorge, spectacular. Lots of waterfalls and incredible rocks and overall geology. Very unique spot. Totally worth the trip and the town around it is charming and unique with tons of great food.

Visited again after 3 years and it’s still one of Kyushu’s most stunning spots. The new paved walkway makes the approach much easier, though the hot and humid weather can make the walk a bit tough, so bring water and a hat. The gorge itself was lively with both locals and tourists, and the famous waterfall was as magnificent as ever—definitely the highlight of the trip! The river for the boat ride was muddy from the rain, but the views along the cliffs are always breathtaking and worth seeing no matter the season. Yes, it can get crowded, but the scenery makes up for it. Between the dramatic rock walls, the lush greenery, and the sound of the falls, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression every time. Would definitely recommend visiting again, and if you have time, try the boat ride under the waterfall for a unique perspective.

Takachiho Gorge is a stunning natural gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, known for its scenic beauty formed by ancient volcanic activity from the nearby Mount Aso. Visitors can explore the gorge by renting a rowboat to see the Manai Falls up close, or by walking along a paved path with viewpoints above. The gorge is a popular destination year-round, famous for its lush greenery and autumn foliage, and is also considered a significant "power spot" due to its connection to Shinto mythology. Key features and activities Formation: The gorge was created over 100,000 years ago when pyroclastic flows from Mount Aso eruptions cooled and hardened, and the Gokase River eroded the rock. Scenery: It features sheer cliffs that are 80 to 100 meters high, a 17-meter-high waterfall called Manai Falls, and crystal-clear waters. Rowboat rentals: A popular way to experience the gorge is by renting a rowboat to get a close-up view of the Manai Falls. It is recommended to book a boat in advance, especially during peak season, as same-day tickets can sell out. Walking path: A paved path runs along the top of the gorge, offering excellent views from above. The Takachiho Gorge Walk trail on AllTrails is an 1.8-mile out-and-back option that takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. Mythology: The area is steeped in Japanese mythology, particularly the story of Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess. Visitors can find related shrines, such as Amano Iwato Shrine, in the vicinity. Other activities: Other attractions include feeding fish in Onoro Pond, exploring small souvenir shops, and enjoying local food. Seasonal illumination: During the warmer months, the gorge is sometimes illuminated at night. Note: going down from the parking lot took a lot of time and energy

A must-visit natural wonder in Kyushu — perfect for families and photo lovers! Takachiho Gorge is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in Japan. The walking path along the gorge is well maintained, making it a great experience for both adults and kids. You can enjoy stunning views of the cliffs, waterfalls, and lush greenery from multiple angles — it’s very photogenic, even from the ground level! The boat ride is definitely a bonus highlight, offering a unique view of the famous Manai Falls from the water. However, it’s quite hard to make an advance reservation, and same-day tickets can have a waiting time of up to 4 hours. If you want to try the boats, arrive early in the morning (around opening time) to secure a slot. For parking, I highly recommend Takachiho-kyo Dai San Ohashi Parking Lot It’s free and provides a scenic walk to the gorge area — a perfect warm-up before you start exploring. Overall, this place is absolutely worth the trip — peaceful, scenic, and family-friendly. Even if you skip the boats, walking through the gorge and taking in the views is an unforgettable experience.

Do you like rivers? Do you like valleys? Do you like getting away from the big city? Do you like feeling secluded? This place is beautiful. It's not just the boat ride, there is so much to see. There are shrines, waterfalls, restaurants, etc. all in the area. The walk to boat's is a bit far so anticipate a good 20 minute walk. You can't actually row too far in the boats so don't worry, it's very safe and suitable for little children. Also, remember, TAKE A DEEP BREATH. smell the air. It's what real air smells like. :)
TatteredAllure — Google review
Takachiho Gorge is breathtaking. On weekends, it’s best to reserve boat tickets online in advance, as they often sell out. P1 is the closest parking to the boat dock, but if you park at P2, you can enjoy a scenic 10-minute walk to the dock. There’s also nagashi somen (flowing noodles), which is a fun and unique experience worth trying. Takachiho Gorge is truly a must-visit destination.
Ethan E — Google review
Takachiho Gorge is such a beautiful and peaceful place! The weather was cool and refreshing—perfect for a walk through nature. The highlight, though, is definitely the boat ride—totally worth it! If you’re coming here, you absolutely must rent a boat. It’s a unique experience. I recommend booking online in advance, as it’s more convenient and saves time. Note that there are a lot of stairs in the area, so it might not be ideal for elderly people or those with knee problems. However, it’s manageable if you’re reasonably fit. There are also restaurants and souvenir shops nearby, which make it easy to grab a bite or pick up a keepsake. Overall, it’s a lovely spot to relax and enjoy Japan’s natural beauty.

Takachiho Shrine is a simple Shinto shrine located in a cedar grove, with a history of 1,800 years. It is considered the most important and powerful spot in Takachiho. The shrine preserves the deities of local shrines and venerates gods of agriculture, exorcism, and matchmaking. Visitors can watch kagura, a ceremonial dance performance native to Takachiho every night from 8 to 9 pm.
Quiet and serene, with tall trees towering over the shrine area. It was a little mystical in the light shower while we were there; we spent about 10 minutes in the area walking around before leaving. It'd be a nice place to drop by if you're already in the area (from the gorge).
Jonathan C — Google review
A popular spot near Takachiho Gorge, featuring a modest shrine. Although it requires some uphill walking from the gorge, it's accessible. Parking is convenient, except on holidays.
Kuma H — Google review
While Takachiho Shrine may not be the most tourist-friendly spot in terms of signage or facilities, the atmosphere more than makes up for it. Nestled in a quiet forested area, the grounds are peaceful, shaded, and deeply spiritual. The towering ancient trees surrounding the shrine give it a mystical charm that’s hard to describe — you can truly feel the weight of history here. It’s the kind of place that invites stillness and reflection, far from the usual crowds. If you’re looking to experience the more serene and spiritual side of Japan, Takachiho Shrine is well worth a visit — just come prepared for a more self-guided and introspective experience.

Takachiho shrine is close to the gorge and is a very well kept, small shrine. You’re not likely to stay long; but it makes for a pleasant experience while on the way to the main attraction.

One of the many Shinto shrines in Takachiho. All are so plain yet so unique. Tucked away in the huge trees gives such a serene feeling.

A very beautiful shrine with a serene atmosphere. It’s much larger than other shrines and features an 800-year-old sacred tree. I’ll definitely visit again in the future.

Free parking and easy to access, I love the small lanterns <3 many people went to pray. Seems like a warm and prosperous place

I had the privilege of visiting Takachiho Shrine, a breathtaking experience. The lush greenery surrounding the shrine is nothing short of divine. I was awestruck by the towering cedars that stood sentinel around the shrine, their grandeur, and majesty a testament to the power of nature. The atmosphere is incredibly calm and peaceful, making it the perfect haven for those seeking solace and tranquility. The beauty of the shrine and its surroundings is simply stunning, and I felt a deep sense of connection to nature and the divine. If you're seeking a place to unwind, reflect, and rejuvenate your spirit, Takachiho Shrine is a must-visit destination. Its natural beauty and serene ambiance will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.

Meat dish restaurant

Nagomi is a minimalist dining room in Kyushu that offers a sublime experience of tasting the famed Miyazaki beef, including various cuts of Takachiho beef grilled at the table. The restaurant has friendly staff who speak some English and an English menu for tourists. Despite having only six tables, each seating four people, Nagomi is well-run and offers excellent beef options, including A5 Miyazaki Wagyu.
Best beef I’ve ever had. Incredible spot not just for beef but the way the entire meal comes together and compliments all the elements. If you are here when this is open go and feast. The entire experience is really wonderful and unique. Really special spot. The only spot in Japan we had to go back and have a second meal as we were so blown away by the first time. Go down to the gorge and walk back up and you will earn this amazing meal.
Terry W — Google review
This is the best beef steak I have ever tasted in my life, and I think I’ve tasted quite a bit. Wagyu has nothing on this Takachiho beef which I believe is in the family of Miyazaki. It’s unctuous and tastes like butter melting in your mouth

A great restaurant to try takachiho wagyu! So spacious and comfortable restaurant The price vary from the type of the meat. Definitely recommend for those who love wagyu ! I’ve try many wagyu from vary regions in japan. This is one of the best wagyu with affordable price! They have parking lot in front of the restaurant, also free parking 🅿️

Definitely a good steakhouse when in Takachiho, so do drop by for a visit and have a meal here 👍🏽👍🏽. Selections are from lean cut, loin cut, sirloin cut and fillet cuts, and are served in weight selections of 150, 200 and 250 grams. It is served rare on a hot plate, and there is an additional hot stone to further grill it for added doneness if one so prefers. Rice top-up is free too.
Garett L — Google review
Dammm the Beef is out of this world!!!!! So tender and you decide how cooked you want your meat to be…. A must come if you are in this corner of Japan
Ronnie H — Google review
Sirloin Steak served on sizzling iron plate. Full set with rice (free refill), miso soup, salad, appetizers, dessert & one drink. Some of the sets are sold out at the beginning dinner time. There're only a few staff members who served on the restaurant, so that you're waiting for them to order something. I ordered a refill rice, but the waitress/waiter is very busy, so I finally waited for a few minutes to get a rice, but the beef is already cool down.

One the best beef I ever had ! Order the filet steak and it is totally melt in your mouth ! No need any sauce or seasoning to go with it, the pure joy of the meat taste in your mouth is the absolute compliments.

Amaterasu Railway offers a unique open-air train experience on the Takachiho Railway track, known as the Super Cart. The 30-minute, 5.1km round trip provides stunning views of Terraced Rice Fields and includes a stop at the impressive 105-meter Takachiho Bridge. The train ride features illuminated tunnels and bubble-blowing from the trestle, adding to the enchanting journey. Visitors can also explore a preserved train maintenance Barn and enjoy narration throughout the ride.
It is a cute train with no sunshade. So please prepared your sunscreens and cap because open the umbrella is prohibited. And also it has a pretty good view with spectacular mountainous views. If you curious about here, just come here to experience!
Google review
I wouldn’t recommend this place to waste your money…… It will be good to visit to take pictures with railroad if you want because there is no control so foreigners and even Japanese do whatever they want to take pictures. So be ready to mess up everything 😇 It costs ¥2000yen/person for 30min round trips which is ripped off for what you paid. For all the trips, I will say it was boring, nothing special. We had to sit together with lots of people and it’s faced to inside so we had to move our body to see the views which is nonsense. Also, they played with a light in the tunnels but they used same one everytime in tunnels even no music so you would get bored. They explain the places while you trip, but ONLY JAPANESE so don’t expect translation. Overall, it’s much better to go Takachiho kyou and spend your time in there.
Ami F — Google review
Train schedule is posted on their website. Runs every 20 min. ¥2000 for a 30 min RT ride. Not cheap but it’s tourist attraction & they do run the trains on biodiesel fuel recycled from ramen soup grease! Tickets sell out fast. No advance reservation. Suggest U go early to buy the desired timed tickets then tour Takachiho, have a leisure lunch & return.
Amy J — Google review
We take ride at 4.30pm on 6 Nov 2025. The train ride was fun. The view at the bridge was stunning yet frightening because they stopped right at the middle of the bridge. The conductor then blew bubbles to make the scene more memorable! An unforgettable experience!
Mohd N — Google review
Slightly costly but our girls had tons of fun. We enjoyed the ride too. It is refreshing. The train ride was crowded but we still managed to have our own little space. The view is amazing and the train conductors were friendly. You can check their official website for the price and schedule of the train rides.
Jeffrey Y — Google review
Train times are special and not as advertised on Google. We took the 1820. It rained two hrs before and we thought it was going to be a wash out. The views were taken as the fog sets in. Truly a magical experience!!!!

Wow they bring you to this valley and stops right in the middle of it for you to video, to shoot, to pose on the narrow train with the beautiful surroundings. This train travels on a disused track and it goes thru tunnels and overhanging tree foliages. If you are a fan of Mother Nature and landscape photography, this is the trip you ought not to miss.

Amanoiwato Shrine is an ornate wooden shrine located near the cave where the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu hid. The annual 'Yokagura' festival and the sacred atmosphere of the shrine evoke a sense of mystery and reverence. Takachiho Gorge, where the shrine is situated, offers breathtaking views in every season, from cherry blossoms in spring to snowy landscapes in winter.
We went quite early at the morning. Not many people, just 3 to 4 person. The environment was very peaceful and air was fresh. Walking there listening to the river flow. Amazing!

Nice and short walk to the shrine. The stream and stones are very calming. It's a very peaceful and serene place. You can park at the nearby shrine carpark and take a short walk (10 to 15 mins) to this area. There are a few cafes and eateries in between with a great view overlooking the forest.

Easy 100m walk from parking area. Well kept shrine which smelled really lovely. There’s water to purify / good luck ; try to get free parking which is nearby rather than paying 500 yen to park at the entrance of the shrine

Nice and tranquil wooden shrine amongst tall lush trees. The shrine gate is in the middle of the path and you can continue through the path to exit on the other side where you can find the path to the famous shrine in the cave.

Beautiful! This shrine is believed to be where Amaterasu (Japanese creation story goddess) hid herself in a cave. Be aware that to see one area, you must go in with the priest and whatever group is currently amassed there. There are NO pictures allowed once you pass through the small gate, as it is a sacred area. You can walk about 10 minutes past the shrine to see another area surrounded by rock piles, and photos are fine there. It’s a nice walk through a forest and along a small river. There is a small, free parking lot, but it seems to fill up quickly.

Religious destination
Amanoyasukawara is a captivating Shinto shrine nestled within a cave, accessible via a scenic riverside path. This enchanting site holds deep significance in Japanese mythology, as it is believed to be where numerous deities convened to strategize on luring the sun goddess Amaterasu-Omikami from her hiding place in Amanoiwato.
This was cool — I thought from the reviews you couldn’t go in the cave, but you can. It’s a short walk from the nearby shrine. Very significant religious site because it’s where the goddess Amaterasu hid from her brother until he danced and lured her out, thereby saving the world. Many small piles of stones and a cave shrine.
John B — Google review
A walk on a concrete path along the beautiful gorge brings you to this shrine in the cave. What's different are the many, many cairns (" towers of stones") piled around the place - unusual and intriguing to see. It’s associated with the legend of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, who hid herself in a cave and plunged the world into darkness. In response, the other deities gathered at Amanoyasukawara to devise a way to lure her out and restore light to the world.
Vincent O — Google review
Unique and mesmerising small stone shrine in a stone cave. The entire cave is covered in small stone towers, it almost feels unreal. The walk from the nearby shrine to the cave is easy and also very pretty. There is free parking across the bridge from the nearby shrine. The spaces are limited so I recommend arriving early. It was a great and interesting experience!

Short 10 mins walk to the cave from the parking area. Easy path by the stream. Lovely shrine with lots of stacked stones. We parked slight further away for free parking, there’s paid parking (500 yen) 1 min walk away.

Beautiful surroundings. We got there just in time before sunset. The cave was dark already and some bats we're flying out of it. We were the only ones there at the time so it made the visit extra special.

An absolutely stunning shrine located within a cave at the end of a ravine. A stone path will lead you there. Beware, slippery when wet! Stunning nature, but also animals and bugs so beware if you’re allergic to bees or ants. Free entry. Can get busy as people come to pray at the altar. Be respectful of the place and the people.

It takes a while to get to this shrine. But the journey there leads you through a beautiful nature trail and the shrine in the cavern is quite magnificent. It’s also amazing how so many people have stacked stones around the shrine, the sheer quantity is astounding!

Restaurant Chiho-no-ie is a popular spot located at the entrance of Takachiho Gorge, offering a wide selection of Takachiho souvenirs. The cafe, Manai, serves delicious Takachiho beef burgers and allows visitors to enjoy catching noodles as they flow along a bamboo stream. The restaurant offers Miyazaki wagyu beef and river trout set meals that are highly recommended.
Had my very first flowing water noodle experience at this restaurant, and it was every bit as cool as it sounds. Located right next to the stunning Takachiho Gorge, it's the perfect spot to unwind after a bit of exploring. The restaurant seems to be a hit with visitors, given the signs instructing how to queue up. I swung by post-lunch rush at around 2:30 pm, which turned out to be perfect timing as it wasn't too crowded. The menu was straightforward, offering the option of ordering items separately or going for a set at 1500 yen, which most patrons, myself included, opted for. The set included the unique noodle experience, a beautifully grilled fish, and a rice ball. The whole concept of catching your noodles as they flow by in water is not just fun but also ensures that you're the only one touching your food - great for hygiene. And don't worry about your noodle-catching skills; any escapees are collected and served to you at the end, so nothing goes to waste. The noodles themselves were simple yet delicious, making for a light, satisfying meal. All in all, it's a 5-star experience for me. The combination of a unique dining adventure, tasty food, and the beautiful setting by the gorge makes this a must-visit spot.

Fun experience of catching your soba flowing down through bamboo shoot in front of you. If you miss it, the soba will be collected at the end and passed to you later. Set meal comes with fish and rice balll. The fish however is small and there’s not much protein. Staff is polite and helpful. You will need to walk through the gorge to get to the restaurant, there’s no other way of getting there by car

Have the somen and rainbow trout set! So much fun catching the somen when it flows down the bamboo. Don’t worry if you miss them as the staff have a basket at the end to catch the noodles for you!

Came for a late lunch at 2pm and place was empty as one could expect. Service was pretty poor which matched the quality of the food. Ordered the chicken Nanba set 1300 yen and Nanba set with fish 1700 yen and the quality and quantity was poor as well. The chicken was a oily poorly fried dish (tasted ok just so oily) Size was small for the amount, we ended up leaving to eat again.

Patronised on a weekday as lunch is included in the tour. It was served in a set menu - grilled fish (yamame) set, costs ¥1850. The food was average, very generous portion, and so very filling.
Pei — Google review
It’s touristy, so manage your expectations accordingly. It was fun trying to catch the noodles as it flows along the bamboo ‘stream’. It probably comes out in 3 batches per order. So meaning each person gets about 3 tries to pick your noodles. The remaining / ‘uncaught’ noodles will be brought to you in a separate basket. I went around 2pm+ and had to wait for about 15 mins as the restaurant was busy. You can order the noodles as is (not enough for a meal) but they do come along in a set meal with a choice of vegetables (steamed pumpkin, konnyaku, rice ball, salad, tofu etc) or grilled fish (very salty). We also tried the beef udon and it was tasty.

We had the Miyazaki wagyu beef and river trout (yamame) set meals and it was delicious. The service was excellent as well. The restaurant is quite easy to find as it is located at the junction to the entrance of Takachiho Gorge, with public parking next door.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Restaurant
Tomoemaru is a bustling eatery that draws in crowds, especially around lunchtime. When I arrived just after 1 PM, there was already a line of eager diners waiting to be seated. The efficient system of assigning numbers ensures that tables turn over quickly, making the wait manageable. I indulged in their fried oyster set and beef croquette, both expertly prepared and bursting with flavor.
We stumbled upon this as we couldn't find the Japanese pancake restaurant which was supposed to be nearby. Am so glad we did! The beef bowl was very tasty; the beef was so tender. We also had the chicken nanban and beef croquet. The croquet was ok but the chicken was delicious. Crispy yet juicy. The owner was friendly and even ran after our car as my partner left his phone behind! Luckily we were just driving across the road to visit the Shrine. We didn't have to wait to be seated, maybe because mid December is low season? Or we were just lucky!
Sookyee H — Google review
Surprisingly delicious and ultra tender thin-sliced beef over rice. You can tell their grill has seen some actions over the years, the bbq flavour comes through deep and made this some of the best meat we have had in 3 weeks travelling across Shikoku and Kyushu islands in South west Japan. 2500 yen per person for set lunch (the obligatory miso soup and pickles plus a small side salad) was a bit steep pricing-wise but nowhere near a rip off for what was ultimately some quality ingredients cooked well
Gergely S — Google review
Chicken Nanban is not bad, a little too saucey though. Takachiho Beef Croquette is fried very well, delicious!
Randy N — Google review
I am still thinking about their delicious beef they served. The order has to be made via a machine which is in Japanese, and is challenging for us, foreigners. We had no choice but to go with the recommended dishes which have pictures on them 😆. No regrets though, the food turns out great! And is quite filling. But we later ordered their fried oysters which were juicy on the inside! Will definitely return!

This is a very popular restaurant. We arrived at close to 1pm and there was already a line of about 6-7 groups in front of us. You are given numbers and the tables turn fast so the wait was not too bad. We ordered the fried oyster setカキ焼き定食, a beef croquette and a charcoal grilled chicken set 宮崎鶏炭火焼き定食. The oysters and the croquette were really done well and delicious. The charcoal grilled chicken is a local specialty. It was our first time trying this dish so we have no basis for comparison, but it was not to our liking. We thought the chicken was too salty and the taste of charcoal was a bit strong for us. The service was fast , the staff friendly and we did enjoy the other dishes a lot.
Robert L — Google review
Small restaurant, we all order the specialty and were pleased with it, the sauce on the fried chicken is very good, the meat too, the croquette too. and best of all, the quantity is more than enough. Only issue here, the service is rather slow.

Yakiniku restaurant
Hatsue is a renowned yakiniku restaurant located in Miyazaki Prefecture. It's part of the 100 Famous Yakiniku restaurants and is known for its high-quality Takachiho beef. Reservations can't be made online or by phone, so visitors need to register their names at the reception and wait to be called in order when the store opens. The restaurant tends to get full quickly, especially on weekends.
Amazing pieces of wagyu that melt in the mouth. Refillable rice. Great sauce. Love this place!

(Translated by Google) There is "Yakiniku Hatsue" nearby, but this time I went here. 90% of people chose the meat rice set meal. On this day, since I'm not a steering wheel keeper, I wanted to eat beer and meat, so I decided on a mini steak. Since you order at the time of reservation, the rice bowl arrives right away! Three thick pieces of meat. . As expected, I shared the belly bread, It's quite filling ♡ It's been a long time since I ate meat properly! Thank you for the meal✨ (Original)

(Translated by Google) I had visited there a few years ago and had the ``Specially Selected Mini Steak Set Meal,'' so I knew it was a delicious and popular restaurant, but a few days before I visited this time, the ``Miniku Meshi Set Meal'' was broadcast on TV. Customers were lined up outside the store. I wrote my name at the entrance around 12:20, and there were 6 other groups waiting in front of me, but I wasn't able to enter until around 13:15. It was originally a butcher shop, and its main job was to deliver ingredients to local schools, and it is only open as a restaurant for about an hour on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I'm not sure if they were turned away by the store staff, but those who came in after 12:30 looked disappointed and left. My husband and I were shown to a private room with a sunken kotatsu that could seat eight people. My wife ordered the ``Meat Rice Set Meal'' that was broadcast on TV, and I ordered the ``Special Yakiniku Set Meal.'' The meat rice was certainly delicious, but as you can see in the photo, the special yakiniku had a nice balance of marbling, and was (probably) the highest quality Takachiho beef!! ️ I like to grill my own meat, but it's a waste unless it's rare or medium🥩 By the way, you can enjoy the original taste of the meat by eating it with salt instead of sauce. If you go to Takachiho, please stop by 😊 (Original)

Nature & Parks
Takamori Yusui Tunnel Park, located a short walk from Takamori Station, is an unfinished railway tunnel that has been transformed into a unique tourist attraction. The 2,055-meter-long tunnel features indoor light installations and a trick water fountain that springs out an impressive 32 tons of water per minute. Visitors can enjoy the surrounding natural beauty with views of the countryside and mountains as a backdrop.
a unique and fascinating attraction in Takamori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. Originally constructed for a railway project, this unfinished tunnel now serves as a park featuring a natural spring water flow, creating a cool, misty atmosphere. The tunnel is a popular spot for visitors seeking a refreshing escape and a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty and history.
Arif A — Google review
It was summer and hot outside, so stepping into Takamori Yusui Tunnel felt like entering nature’s air conditioner. I went on a weekend — kids were splashing around in the stream right in front of the entrance, laughing and cooling off. The tunnel itself is cool (literally and figuratively). There's a ¥300 entrance fee, which is totally worth it for the refreshing break and unique atmosphere. Inside, you'll find colorful hanging displays and a soft, glowing pearl-like waterfall tucked at the back. Quiet, slightly mysterious, and very calming. I stopped by after riding the Takamori Torokko Sightseeing Train, which made it a perfect back-to-back experience. After the scenic ride through mountains and tunnels, this cool, peaceful spot was a great way to unwind even more. There are a few fun photo spots inside, and outside is beautifully scenic. I climbed the ladder path up the hill and got a stunning countryside view — rice fields, hills, and open skies. Totally worth the sweat. A peaceful, low-key spot to explore — especially if you're already in the area. Bring a camera and enjoy the breeze!

Although I would not recommend going out of your way to see it, it is worth a short visit. It is basically an old tunnel, that has been redecorated. It is about a kilometer walk inside it. I visited before Christmas, so there were a lot of different Christmas trees. There is also a big parking lot outside that you can use for free.
Konstantinos N — Google review
we traveled quite a distance to reach this tunnel. The tunnel was originally a railway line, but because it was not used while the nature around it grew beautifully, it became a relaxing tourist spot. To be honest, the tunnel itself doesn't have anything interesting. Inside there are lights installed to brighten the atmosphere. In fact, what is interesting is the surrounding natural area with views of the countryside and mountains as a backdrop. Those who like nature and enjoy traveling while relaxing will enjoy walking around this area.

A tunnel leading to spring water source. Beautiful small park outside the tunnel and the water is so clear you can see the bottom of the water channel. Nice decor during Christmas period too.
J S — Google review
Interesting art exhibition place in an unfinished railway tunnel, which was abandoned after too much water ingress from nearby springs. It's permanently Christmas here and there are lots of interesting floats, lighting and water features to find, and some nice ponds outside. It's pretty cold inside so great on a hot summers day for some respite. Worth a quick visit if you're in the area.
Dave P — Google review
Went there on 1st April and found that half of the tunnel decorations were Christmas tree.. I was expecting something different for the Sakura season, also a lot of decorations were bamboo with simple holes and a light inside, I feel like this place could be so much better but there's no one in charge to renew the experience and give an interest to come back...

Small local restaurant - only 1 person working there doing everything, so you need to be a bit patient. We ordered loin, ribs, and steak... they were ALL really nice and you can tell the wagyu is very good quality. Prices are super cheap, too. Make sure to get some rice with your meat. You get a small portion of salad and grilled vegetables for free. Don't order too much as the meat won't taste as nice when you overstuff yourself, and given how marbled the meat arw, you can get full quit quickly. English menu is available. Cash payments only.

An entertaining 1-hour show of four acts, of traditional Japanese cultural dances. Introduction is in Japanese but an English handout gives you the gist of the performances. You sit on the mats, so your own cushion will make it more comfortable. There is a side area if you bring folding chairs. Worth the ¥1000 entry fee.

Beautiful show and incredible atmosphere. Research the history before you come so you can be more amazed. You will be sitting on the tatami mats so bring a pillow. Tickets open at 7pm and we went in straight away to reserve a hood space as it got pretty busy.

A wonderful activity for the evening when in Takachiho, especially for those looking to soak up a cultural experience. Take note, one will be sitting tatami style on the floor in the hall, no chairs. It is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property since 1978.

Traditional performance. Good to visit. They will give you the brochure to explain what the performance is about (you can ask for the English version).

Highly recommend seeing the Kagura here. Miyazaki is where the gods first descended. There's another shrine near the area where the cave in the play is located. Go to both.

Michi-no-Eki Takachiho is a great stopover for travelers, offering delicious local meals and the opportunity to purchase local goods. Visitors can purchase meal tickets at the entrance using a machine and then exchange them for orders at the counter. The dining area has partition plates on each table as a measure against COVID-19. One can enjoy dishes like beef bowl, Dangojiru, and Nanban chicken, all of which are highly recommended by visitors.
(Translated by Google) Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture (Inside Takachiho Roadside Station) We had lunch at a restaurant inside the roadside station. I wanted to try some dumpling soup or udon, but my mother and I decided on the Chicken Nanban Set (¥1,400 x 2). It was lunchtime. We waited a little while to buy our meal tickets, and when we handed them over, the staff member working inside said it would take a little while. Well, we were prepared for a bit of a wait, so that was totally fine! 🎵 The restaurant isn't very large, but it seems they have terrace seating. At first, we sat at a table, but a seat at the counter in the back opened up, so we moved there since there were just the two of us. Chicken Nanban, Miyazaki's soul food, was something I'd definitely try when I returned to my hometown, so I was really looking forward to it! We were called in about 15 minutes later, which was quicker than I expected. The chicken nanban set came with a small side dish, pickles, and soup, and was topped with a generous amount of tartar sauce. It looked delicious! Completely different from the local Osaka place. In Osaka, the norm is to deep-fry a whole piece of chicken breast, slice it lengthwise, and pour the tartar sauce directly over it. They never marinate it in the sweet and sour sauce like they do here. I took a bite right away! 🎵 The chicken breast, soaked in the sweet and sour sauce, was paired with the generous amount of tartar sauce, making it incredibly delicious!!! The chicken breast was also surprisingly tender, easily torn apart and easy to eat! The sweet and sour sauce and tartar sauce were a perfect match, making it incredibly delicious. 🎵 The juicy flavor all the way through was truly delicious. 🎵 My mom also finished it all. It was a very satisfying meal. 🎵 The chicken nanban was so delicious, I'm glad we stopped by. ❤︎ I took my plate to the return counter and left the restaurant. If only the parking lot was a little bigger, I'd be happy!

I had a convenient and satisfying lunch at this restaurant! The chicken and rice main dish was flavorful and filling, and the complimentary soup was a nice touch. I appreciated the unique ticketing system, where you purchase a coupon from the vending machine and then redeem it with the staff. The restaurant itself was spacious and comfortable, making for a pleasant dining experience. Overall, a great option for a quick and delicious meal. 4/5 stars!

I recently stopped by this restaurant and ordered through the vending machine. While the process was efficient, I wished an English option was available. Luckily, there was pictures of the food. The food was delicious, and I appreciated the quick service. However, due to my time constraints, I couldn't fully enjoy my meal. I was in and out quickly, but I would have liked to savor the flavors more. Overall, I recommend this restaurant for its tasty food and speedy service. If you're a non-Japanese speaker, be prepared to use hand gestures or seek assistance from a local to navigate the vending machine. With a bit more language support, this place would earn a perfect score from me!

(Translated by Google) I stopped in for lunch on the way back from sightseeing in Takachiho Gorge. You buy a meal ticket and take it to the counter. You receive a call alarm like in a food court and sit down. You can self-serve water, and there is a water dispenser on the left hand side as you enter the entrance. When the alarm goes off, go get your food, then return to your seat and start eating. I had the Chicken Nanban set meal (1,400 yen). Thick chicken tempura with a light sweet and sour flavor, and a good amount of tartar sauce, with just the right balance of sweetness and sourness. It was quite expensive, but it was delicious. I think the food at roadside stations is probably something that the local people have tried and tested to find the best value for money, the best taste, and that people who want to eat local specialties will be satisfied with if they are of this quality! So if you're not sure where to go, I think it's probably okay to go to a restaurant at a roadside station. I want to go to famous restaurants, but they fill up quickly, and from Takachiho, everything is far away. So I highly recommend this place.

The parking lot wasn't that big, and the restaurant was the size of a small cafeteria. The menu was large, with udon, soba, and set meals. I had the Chicken Nanban Bowl. Perhaps because I was eating in the original hometown, it tasted better than usual, and the tartar sauce was the best. It wasn't as oily as it looked. The small side dishes were also nice. You'll be lucky if you can get in at the right time, but it's okay to wait a little. Many restaurants in Takachiho close between 2pm and 4pm, so it's rare to find one that's open. Nestled in the serene mountains, Akimoto Shrine is a hidden gem that pays homage to the Eight Dragon King God of Water. While reaching this sacred site can be a bit challenging due to narrow roads and recent construction from heavy rains, the journey is well worth it. Visitors often find themselves parking about 300 meters away and walking through picturesque landscapes adorned with rice terraces like Tochimata Tanada. Despite some road issues, the shrine's grounds are meticulously maintained, offering a tranquil atmosphere perfect for reflection.

And above all, I feel like the air is clearer. It was my first visit in two years, but maybe it was because of the earthquake? The road had caved in, so I got off the car at the parking lot in front and walked. The kindness of the local people was conveyed by preparing a unicycle for fetching water. (Translated by Google) We visited Akimoto Shrine, located deep in the mountains of Takachiho and dedicated to the three deities of creation: Kunitokotachi, Kunisatsuchi, and Toyonakazumi. As we walked along the approach to the shrine, the sound of the trees rustling and mist rolling in created a silence that seemed to stand still in time. The shrine grounds face the direction of the evil spirit, making it a sacred place where ancient spirit still lingers. To the left of the main hall, pure sacred water springs from Mt. Morotsuka and flows, carefully cared for by local residents (you can draw the water). In autumn, the temple grounds are adorned with colorful autumn leaves, creating a majestic yet warm scene. This place, at one with nature, is truly one of Japan's original landscapes. A hidden sacred place in Miyazaki that is highly recommended for those seeking to purify their mind and body. P.S. A certain famous person said that when he retreated to this place, he felt a connection to Aramatsuri-no-miya Shrine in the Inner Shrine of Ise, so there is a possibility that it may also be related to Seoritsuhime. (Translated by Google) I went on March 25, 2025. A shrine surrounded by rocks Somehow, I managed to go because it was Kunijotateson. Anyway, the roads are tough. I went from the direction of Mukoyama Shrine, and the road to Akimoto Shrine must have felt really long and far, or rather, it was reality. long and far away Forever driving on narrow roads along the mountains. If there was an oncoming car, we wouldn't be able to pass each other, so we had someone who could drive sit in the passenger seat and watch from a distance to see if there was an oncoming car, and we managed to get there. I passed a couple of cars on the way. If you catch oncoming cars from quite a distance, you can wait in a place where you can easily pass each other. It's a straight road (you could almost call it that), so there's almost no option for cars coming from the other side to not come here. There are also large vehicles (trucks, vans, etc.) driving around, which is surprising. How scary have I been driving this compact car? Anyway, it took a long time. The road in front of the shrine has collapsed, and a fence has been erected to close off traffic beyond this point. Don't try to push it away and move on. The collapse of the road was more frightening than I expected, and there were large holes under the asphalt. Therefore, there is a vacant lot to the left of that fence, so park your car there. You can park 2 or 3 cars, but if there are actually 3 cars parked, it will be difficult to turn your car around. From there, go on foot. 5 minutes on foot? I wonder if it's moderate. Shrines are very beautiful in many ways. I could definitely feel the energy of Kunijotateson, but I felt like there was something else mixed in as well, and it felt a little strange. The harshness of the path is perfect for an unexplored shrine, but I gave it a 3 star for the energy.

A cozy, family-run ramen spot with a truly local vibe in Takachiho. I ordered the miso ramen and asked for a vegetarian version (no pork) with a boiled egg—and it was delicious! The broth was full of flavor, and the egg was perfectly cooked. All that for under 1000 yen per person. Thy offered also free tea, so we did not order any drink. The place is super clean and managed by a kind couple who greeted us with warm smiles. I wish I could’ve chatted with them more! There were also some locals dining in, which always feels like a good sign. No wait when we arrived. There are about 3-4 tables in the main space, a small counter for five, and an extra room inside with two more tables—great use of space for such a small spot. Menus are available in English, and just a heads-up: they accept cash only. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re exploring Takachiho and craving a satisfying bowl of ramen in a welcoming atmosphere.

Hotel Takachiho is a casual hotel located in Takachiho, offering a convenient location within walking distance of Amano Iwato Shrine and Takachiho Gorge. The property features a restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows and a spa area with a sauna. Guests can choose between traditional Japanese rooms or Western-style rooms, both providing comfortable and clean accommodations.
Wow! This hotel! First of all, my husband and I were there as a couple, but this hotel is clearly kid friendly. There was a very nice indoor play area for children with lots of books for them lining the walls. I was very impressed with that as I haven't seen that at other hotels in Japan. The room was lovely, the view was beautiful, and the surroundings were quiet. It was an easy walk to some of the best meals we've ever had, and it was a quick walk to the temple for the nightly show exemplifying one of the oldest forms of dance in all of Japan. We booked a western style bedroom but they also have tatami mat rooms with futons if you prefer that. The bathrooms are western style which we appreciated. The service was wonderful, and they had a few people at the front desk who spoke English so we were able to get some really good restaurant recommendations.

This seems to be the best option to stay in Takachiho at a reasonable cost. Big onsen was great to enjoy after an exhausting day of outdoor adventures. We even got a tamimi room for the full Japanese experience. Plenty of selections for breakfast buffet although just okay quality. Overall an good place to stay for the night.

The best part of this hotel is the location and wonderful staff. It is very close to the gorge and within walking distance of Takachiho-jinja I stayed in a single room that was very comfortable. The bed was good, there was a balcony, and the view was amazing. I had dinner in the hotel’s restaurant. Apparently you have to make a reservation for dinner, which I did not have, but the kitchen was very accommodating and allowed me to order from the lunch menu. I was very thankful as it was a holiday and just about every restaurant I drove by was closed. The only negative was the very dingy carpet. Overall, I would recommend this hotel as it was a good value and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Beautiful and delicious set meal. Dessert was also delicious. Cute mini leaf house container. The host was hospitable, pouring Japanese wine from a bamboo for the guests. Great atmosphere. Takes some strength to walk a steep ramp up to the restaurant and down when leaving.

Have a steak & other local foods set lunch in this wonderful restaurant. Also have a taste of the bamboo saki. Learned the Takachiho beef was ranked Japanese #1 few years. It’s quite joyful to find here.

Located in a 200+ year old building. Near the start of the walk to Takachiho gorge for buses too big to go down the narrow road. It’s a nicer restaurant than those in the area but it’s still catered mainly for tourist on their stop before visiting the gorge. A decent restaurant as it still feels quite traditional for the average tourist.

Nice place for a meal. I came here on Miyazaki tour with a big group. Food was good and with variety~ Minus one ⭐️ as I wished some of the food were hot!

(Translated by Google) During our KK Day trip to Takachiho Gorge, we had lunch at a place where the food was incredibly filling and filling. This time, we opted for the chicken set, which was also very delicious! However, be careful with the fire in the pot; it doesn't stay lit very long. I recommend adding all the meat quickly once it's turned on. Also, because we were on a tight schedule, our meal was relatively short (I think it was 30-40 minutes). The rice wasn't plain rice; it felt more like...cooked rice? Or maybe oily rice?! 😂 The fried chicken that came with the meal was also delicious. They also provide a small glass of sake, but...it was quite spicy.

Izakaya restaurant
Restaurant
Tentsukutsun is a charming eatery that offers a delightful dining experience. Visitors rave about the crispy and flavorful potato girl, which is a must-try dish. The chicken nanban embodies the essence of Miyazaki cuisine, leaving patrons feeling satisfied. Guests appreciate the warm and friendly service from the staff, adding to the overall enjoyable atmosphere.
Amazing place with fresh, high-quality sashimi. Every dish is carefully prepared, and there’s a great variety to choose from. The service is warm and welcoming, making it a wonderful dining experience. Highly recommend!!!!!!!

Extremely friendly service that feels like home. Love the authentic izakaya vibe in it. Ordering of food is fuss free on iPad with English language. The food is delectable as described by the raving reviews. To take note, it only accepts cash payment.

Cute restaurant that serves sushi and some vegetarian dishes like fried eggplant and fried tofu. They also have meat and pizza in the menu. We almost did not enter because in the entry says you must enter order at least one drink per person. Min drink price is 440 yen (for a soda or tea). They also have many beer. I am glad we entered. Food was very delicious and staff were nice and fun. There is a table on to order where you can select English language. We ordered fried tofu, fried eggplant, grilled fish, sashimi… and loved all of them. One thing I did not like is that they brought us appetisers and then they charged them on the bill. I think they should ask before bringing them informing that they are an additional cost.

The owner of the guest house I was staying at recommended this izakaya and their "imomusume" fried potato balls. Ordered that plus some skewers, cucumber, fried garlic, and local beer - everything was delicious! Staff is respectful and quite kind. Definitely recommend this place!

Amazing dining experience!! So so good restaurant with menu on IPad and in English. Easy to order! Fantastic food with sashimi, local dishes, amazing pizza and so much more unique japanese dishes. I give 10/10

This place is a real gem! We had dinner here and had such a great time enjoying the food - what we really loved was the sashimi, grilled hokke, fried cheese, fried squid, chicken wings, tamago and onigiri. The yakitori skewers weren’t as outstanding but still passable overall. We had a ton of food but our total bill was still really affordable, averaging around 30,000 yen/pax! Service was also fast and they have an English menu which was useful for us

Portions are larger than expected, great value for money! Fried taro balls and fish (both sashimi and grilled) are absolutely delicious! Also love the cozy ambiance and jazz in the background, highly recommended!
