Nakatsu Castle, a 16th-century stone fortress surrounded by a saltwater moat, is a historical gem with an observation deck and the Rangaku museum. This castle is part of the 'Castles on the Sea' and features the striking Red Stained Wall from the Sengoku Period aftermath. It holds significance as the childhood home of Fukuzawa Yukichi, an influential figure in the Okudaira Clan and renowned author.
Perched gracefully beside the Oita countryside, Nakatsu Castle is a charming and modest samurai-era fortress steeped in history. First Impressions: The castle stands on a small hill next to a picturesque moat, surrounded by lush greenery—a perfect backdrop for calming strolls and reflective moments. It’s compact yet well-preserved, evoking a clear sense of Japan’s feudal past. Architecture & History: Built in the early 17th century by the Ogasawara clan, Nakatsu Castle is one of just a few surviving original wooden castles in Japan. Its elegant main keep (tenshu) rises three stories high, offering a quaint look into Edo-period design. Inside the Castle: The small museum inside provides fascinating insights into the castle’s legacy—displaying samurai armor, weapons, and historical documents. Though the exhibits are primarily in Japanese, foreign language pamphlets make it easy for visitors to grasp their significance. The View: Climbing to the top floor rewards you with a pleasant view of Nakatsu City, the serene moat, and surrounding forests. It’s a peaceful panorama that truly feels like a step back in time. Visitor Experience: The setting is laid-back, with few tourists, allowing for an intimate exploration. You can easily walk or cycle around the moat, enjoying both historical architecture and nature. Benches and shaded areas are scattered around—ideal for a quiet moment with a book or snack. Accessibility & Amenities: • Access: A short, scenic 15-minute walk from Nakatsu Station. • Facilities: Restrooms and a small souvenir shop on site; cafés and convenience stores are close by. • Fee: Very reasonable entrance fees, with discounts for children and seniors.

Reading the info plaque at Kokura Castle the first lord of Nakatsu castle was given surrounding lands and rules for a few years before being reassigned to Kokura. This is a relative small castle and we breezed through it along with a small museum/rest area to the side of the main keep.

(Translated by Google) Speaking of Nakatsu, it's fried chicken! Nakatsu Castle! Yukichi Fukuzawa! That's right. I enjoyed Nakatsu Castle first and then headed there on foot. The path is flat and easy to walk. The entrance is easy to find, so let's take a closer look inside the building. There are plenty of materials that history buffs will enjoy. Were there any childhood episodes? Once you are satisfied, take a walk around the garden. The compact yet impressive buildings and trees shone under the blue sky. As a bonus, there is also a statue of Yukichi Fukuzawa in front of the station. The statue of Yukichi peeking out from the heart of the promotion of learning is cute. The Fukuzawa Yukichi Memorial Museum was a valuable opportunity to deepen my knowledge, with detailed exhibits on his life and achievements. The exhibits were organized in an easy-to-view format, and I was particularly impressed by his writings and handwritten documents. The explanatory panels were also easy to understand, helping me understand Fukuzawa Yukichi's philosophy and the historical context. The former home was quaint, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of the time. The wooden architecture and gardens have been beautifully preserved, allowing me to immerse myself in the historic atmosphere. The guide's explanations were thorough, and attention to detail was evident. Overall, I recommend this spot to history buffs and those interested in education. The quiet, peaceful environment, allowing for a leisurely tour, was also appealing. However, the memorial museum next door is well worth a visit. It's just the right place for people who don't know exactly what he did. I didn't know the details either, so it was a learning experience. We spent about 30 minutes there. After visiting the memorial museum, we recommend you visit the former residence. The grounds have been designated as a Historic Site and Natural Monument.

The triangular pond adjacent to the shrine grounds is a special sanctuary where the mats grow, and the entire pond area has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the national government. Aonodōmon is a remarkable hand-carved tunnel located in a scenic riverside area, believed to have been meticulously crafted by a Buddhist monk over the course of 30 years during the Edo Period. The historical site offers an intriguing glimpse into the dedication and craftsmanship of its creator, as it was entirely carved without the aid of machinery. Visitors are encouraged to ponder the significance behind this labor-intensive endeavor while exploring the picturesque surroundings.
It has been many years since I visited and led tours here. When you visit, ask yourself why the monk felt it necessary to carve this tunnel, which took nearly 30 years to complete. And be sure to check out the watering hole which isn't too far away, but off the beated path. It isn't too far from the bakery in Yabakei.

An interesting history here. It's a shame that in more modern times a road has been carved through this magnificent cliff, only to be closed due to rock fall hazard. Still, a nice quiet place to go for a walk and enjoy some scenery.

Rakanji Temple, located on the cliffs of Mt. Rakan, offers a serene and spiritually significant experience with breathtaking panoramic views. Visitors can reach the temple via a chairlift ride, providing a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. The temple features over 3,700 stone Buddha figures, including 500 rakan (Buddha's disciples), nestled in caves on the site.
Rakanji is a place very worth visiting. You can go up by the mini cable car and walk down hill which only takes less then 30 minutes. The temple is well preserved and by walking around you can feel the peacefulness inside.

Serene and simply stunning! We met with Eika HOKA, a nun whose father initiated the reconstruction of Rakanji Temple 48 years ago in 1969. Eita speaks English as she lived in Spain previously. She informed us that the original temple was burned down 74 years ago in 1943. A visit to the Murodō Cave to check out the 500 arahan (aka rakan or enlightened beings). According to Eita, the hundreds of buddha statues are originals. Wow! Psst! The cable chair return ride, at ¥700 per adult, is a must try. Once in the temple, pay another ¥300 per adult to go to the apex where one can pay respect to the golden standing Buddha and ring the bell two times for good tidings. Btw, the panoramic view of the distant mountains is awesome!

It is a hundreds years old temple with thousands buddha statues. Sorry that no photo is allowed on the buddha statues. the cable ride is quite fun and i can see the amazing autumn leaves view along the ride.
Yh L — Google review
We were excited to visit this temple, but our excitement was spoiled already at the entrance, where we were scrutinized to see if they would give us the 1000 yen entry permit to the mountain. Some people were sent away in quite a rude manner. After we received the tickets and were told 'no photos', we were free to go up to the temple. The path to the temple is beautiful, but unfortunately 'no photos' because - we were told - 'to look with our hearts '. After we reached the actual temple we were yelled at by one of the staff in a very rude manner. It was an exceptionally unpleasant experience and it was the first time in my 25 years of visiting Japan regularly, that I was addressed so impolitely. I think the place is beautiful, but the staff ruins the experience. I will not return and would not recommend anybody to visit.

Shinyaba Gorge is a picturesque river valley renowned for its stunning autumn foliage and breathtaking mountain vistas. Visitors can soak in hot springs and marvel at an observatory while enjoying the beautiful scenery. However, it tends to be quite crowded with tourists, so arriving early is recommended to avoid the crowds. The area boasts delicious local cuisine such as shishi nabe (boar soup) and shika kushi (deer on a stick), making it an excellent spot for foodies too.
Visited on 21/11/22. Whilst the best time to see has passed, there are still plenty of red leaves en-route and near the big parking lot. The viewing platform itself is quite small but you could walk around the area by foot (we spent around an hour taking photos etc). The mountains are magnificent whether with or without red leaves! Driving through the area is such an enjoying experience.

I visited on the 8/11/24 and not much autumn foliage to be seen. Apparently the autumn foliage in Japan was delayed in 2024 by roughly a month. That being said I would suggest visiting from at least the 3rd week of November to see the autumn foliage. Other than the autumn foliage it's still a lovely place with tourist shops and a nice walk or two near the river.

Buffet restaurant
Nestled in the charming Honyabakei area of Nakatsu City, Dōmon Patio is a delightful buffet restaurant that offers a taste of home-style country cuisine. After exploring the stunning nemophila fields and the unique Holland Bridge, my husband and I decided to stop by for lunch on a busy Saturday during Golden Week. Despite a bit of a wait with several groups ahead of us, we were eager to experience what this quaint spot had to offer.
(Translated by Google) A country cuisine buffet! There were many simmered dishes, all of which were gentle and delicious. The only meat available was fried chicken, but there was also a wide variety of dishes such as grilled salted mackerel and konnyaku, so for 1,500 yen, it was good value for money. It may not look very appealing to younger people, as it's mostly brown, but for someone approaching their 60th birthday, I was very satisfied with the variety of dishes! Soft drinks and ice cream are included for an additional 250 yen, but I was fine without them. I'll definitely be back!

As soon as the restaurant opened at 11:00, I was shown to my seat after paying in advance and then went to the counter to pick up various dishes. I had konjac, hijiki seaweed, meat and potato stew, fried chicken, and many other dishes, as well as dumpling soup, chestnut rice, curry, pasta, and a vegetable-based menu, but there were also many dishes I couldn't easily make myself. For dessert, there was pudding, pear, and Shine Muscat grapes! However, the Shine Muscat grapes were gone in an instant. Then there was sweet potato. 💦 I was full and would like to return when the season changes! However, the time is a little short at 60 minutes. Also, the drink bar is 250 yen extra. At 1750 yen in total, it's not that cheap. However, they have ice cream, which is rare for a buffet. And the taste is pretty average. There are some low quality dishes mixed in, like chijimi, curry, and vinegared chicken. And they may be a little salty. There aren't that many varieties. Also, the interior is dark overall, the lighting is a little bad, and the distance between the seats is quite close. The tatami mats may be a little dirty. There's nothing about it being a comfortable place to eat or having a nice atmosphere. Overall, it's "average". It's okay to go, but you don't have to go out of your way to go. I prefer the buffet at Konoha Garden in Hita City. Yes. The reason it's not suitable for young people is that it's a buffet style with side dishes that have ingredients, cooking methods, and flavors that are suitable for older people, and I think the only strong meals are Nakatsu fried chicken and curry. Among the side dishes I received this time, the ``simmered konnyaku'' was the best. The texture is like a hard gummy candy, but the taste is soaked and the rice goes well. In addition, the seasoning brings out the flavors of the ingredients, making it feel like I've had a delicious side dish for the first time in a while. It is possible to make a reservation at this store, but please be aware that if you make a reservation over the phone, the staff will write your name on a notebook at the entrance in the order in which they received your call before the store opens, and you may not be able to take a seat or be skipped if you are not there when your name is called. I had intended to change the time a bit, but there were 7 or 8 groups waiting in front of me. I decided to write my name and wait. After waiting for about 20 minutes, I was called, so I paid the buffet fee and drink bar fee and took a seat. By the way, the buffet fee is 1,500 yen per adult + 250 yen for a drink bar (tax included). If you are over 65 years old, the buffet fee is 1,350 yen. The time limit is 60 minutes. As it is a farm restaurant, there are many vegetable menus. In addition to handmade side dishes such as konjac stew, stir-fried bamboo shoots and pork (?), hijiki, fried kiriboshi daikon radish, potato salad, seasonal vegetable tempura, garland chrysanthemum with sesame, shiitake mushrooms with mustard, soba salad, and fried chicken, there are also desserts such as chiffon cake, pudding, and coffee jelly. The side dishes had a light flavor that was gentle on the body and were delicious. The store is stocked with souvenirs such as local vegetables, handmade konnyaku, pickles, and sweets. Holland Bridge is also nearby, making it a perfect place to take a walk after dinner. I think the parking lot can accommodate more than 20 cars. There were many side dishes using seasonal rape blossoms, bamboo shoots, and koshiabura, and the konjac stew had a good flavor and was very delicious. The komatsuna juice that you can drink at the drink bar for an additional fee is delicious, but I felt that the apple and tomato flavor was stronger than the komatsuna. It can get crowded even during the weekday afternoons, but the wait time felt relatively short. The "Chicken Day Pack" is a particularly good deal, allowing you to enjoy a slightly more luxurious experience than usual. The original chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the aroma of freshly cooked chicken is sure to whet your appetite. Another great point is that drinks are the same price regardless of size. As you'd expect from Nakatsu, the mecca of fried chicken, the fast food here is satisfying enough. It's the perfect place for a quick treat after shopping or on a drive. A must visit if you are a One Piece fan!!! Located conveniently right outside Aso station, God Usopp stands proudly declaring to the world that he will become a brave warrior of the sea. If you are driving, the station is also a michi-no-eki and there is plenty of parking available. Don't forget to purchase your figurine and collect your commemorative card in store, run by a friendly French couple who were also conducting a survey to find out where we were from. Usopp was actually the last stop for our pilgrimage as we were heading up to Kurokawa onsen. It might be a bit crowded but stay and chat with the other fans. You'll be surprised to find out where they are all from! One Piece brings everyone together!

When I dropped by Aso Station, I came across the Usopp statue — and it instantly made me smile. There were a lot of visitors at the nearby station shops, but when I went to take a photo of the statue, there were only a few people waiting, so I didn’t have to queue long. I didn’t take a photo with him, but just seeing Usopp there — bold pose, full character energy — made the stop feel special. Set against the backdrop of Mt. Aso, the statue brings a fun contrast to the peaceful countryside. Whether you’re a One Piece fan or not, it’s a cool little surprise that adds personality to the station. A great stop, especially if you’re on the trail for the Kumamoto One Piece statues!

The area is known for its historic buildings, cultural properties, and abundant nature. Yabakei Gorge is a major attraction, offering picturesque landscapes with unique rock formations carved by the Yamakuni River. During autumn, the gorge becomes even more stunning as vibrant fall colors adorn the surroundings.
Reminds me of Taroko Gorge in Taiwan. Long narrow path along river. You can take the bus here from Nakatsu station in a short 1 hour ride. If coming by bus start farther at the mountain temple and walk back towards Yakabei.

Needa drive to more inside of the mountains, very nice spot for maples. It is worth to go in autumn, not far from Oita or Fukuoka

The weather is nice❤️🧡💛 . We see some areas with bunches of autumn trees with red 🍁 and orange leaves. People saying the leave start falling before even turning red,so we are happy with these photos we got. 🚲 🚲 🚲 The cycling ride pass we get at the nakatsu station make our visit very smooth. Bike rental staff are so nice and helpful. The ride takes 2hours with occasional stop for photos, and road is mostly flat and well paved.

Geologic Formations
Sarutobi Sentsubo is a splendid destination that offers a multitude of attractions. One can enjoy the enchanting view of the river from the bridge, which is truly remarkable. However, capturing a selfie might be challenging due to unsightly steel wiring adorning the bridge. Nearby, there are delightful puppets positioned in the rice field, possibly serving as scarecrows but nonetheless endearing. The woodland paths are particularly captivating and provide an opportunity for exploration amidst nature's beauty.
A valley with a beautiful rock formation. Unfortunately walking trails and bridges that had the best views of the valley were closed off due to the damage as at Nov 2023. There was a small monkey themed shrine over the main bridge. Some accessible areas are privately owned so visitors need to be respectful and take their own litter home and not act nuisance. A small souvenir shop offers local produce and delicious food to take away.
Saku N — Google review
Sarutobi Sentubo Gorge is a natural formation born from the trinity of the clear waters of the Yamakuni River, the deformed andesite that spreads across the riverbed, and small pebbles. Over the course of many years, countless large and small potholes have been carved out by the raging mountain stream and spread across the bottom of the gorge for about 2km. It is designated a national natural monument, and downstream you will find the Ma-rin Gorge and the Nenbutsu Bridge. It is a scenic spot that is also recommended for viewing cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall. A long time ago, the Seto Inland Sea and the Ariake Sea were connected, and this area was under the sea. At that time, lava erupted from the seabed near the southern rock of the Chikushi Mountains, forming metamorphic andesite. After several processes of volcanic deposits and nearby uplift, it was exposed on the surface. These rocks are called Mizobe-type metamorphic andesite, and the rocks were eroded by the rotation of pebbles (pebbles) of the same nature that had accumulated in the depressions of the rocks, creating deep potholes over a long period of time. This is an extremely rare phenomenon that occurs when the right conditions for rock quality, water flow, and flow speed are met, and so the area has been designated a national natural monument. The name "Sarutobi" (Sarutobi) comes from the fact that in the past, mountain monkeys would jump from rock to rock.

The river view on the bridge is superb. However, it is difficult to post a selfie there because of some steel wiring on the bridge tht make it ugly. There is some cute puppets at the nearby rice field. I guess they are supposely some scared- crow. Yet, they r so cute.

Mount Hiko, located in Kyushu, is a popular destination with a rich history and stunning natural beauty. It is associated with the legendary warrior Miyamoto Musashi and is renowned for its world-class pottery made near its base. The area hosts festivals where local families display their pottery, making it an affordable and unique souvenir to bring back home. Mount Hiko is one of the three great Shugendo training sites, featuring small shrines and mysterious sites that create a magical atmosphere.

The only "Jingu" in Fukuoka Prefecture One of Japan's most sacred high-mountain shrines and mountain warrior monasteries of the Yamabushi. By far, the best movie location in Japan. -For shooting old world Japan, this visually stunning authentic mountain shrine area has the best “off camera” logistical infrastructure of any high mountain shrine location in Japan. The multitude of authentic structures, stunning mountain passages, historical monuments and deep green moss-covered forests embody the “look” of “real Japan” that directors and studios seek for their projects and can only be found in this part of the country. Mystical Mountain Shrines / Edo-Period Houses, Inns & Stores / Spiritual Mountain Passages・Lush Green Forests ・Water Falls & Rivers / Birth Place of Japanese swordsmanship. (Translated by Google) I enjoyed hiking in the solemn air. 🍀 The hiking trail to Nakadake was scheduled to be closed (provisionally) until July, but it hadn't been reopened (rope provided). As a result, ① Buzenbo Parking Lot (plenty of parking) - Takazumi Shrine ⛩️ - Kitadake ② Kitadake - Yakushi Pass Fork - Cairn Valley - Minamidake ③ Minamidake - Cairn Valley - Yakushi Pass Fork - Kitadake Fork - Takazumi Shrine - Buzenbo Parking Lot I did a round trip from ① to ③. ① The lower part is clearly paved with cobblestones, and the upper part is a natural cobblestone pattern, which becomes visible once you become familiar with the mountain. 🍀 ②③ The Kitadake side is particularly steep and narrow, with unclear footprints, so be careful not to slip or get lost. There are markers, but not many, and the key is to avoid descending too far. If you get lost, you need to make the basic move of heading back to the ridge, and I thought this route really tested your route-finding skills. (It was the middle day of a three-day weekend, but I didn't encounter anyone on this route... Just a reminder.) It was truly a mountain for ascetics ^_^ Thank you 🍀 (Original)

It took about an hour, and there were various historical sites along the way, so it was fun to walk up. I didn't count the number of steps, but it was 992m above sea level from 751m, for a total ascent of 195m, so it requires a fair amount of stamina. There is also a cable car that runs from halfway up, so if you're not confident, I recommend taking that. Because I walked slowly, I felt like I learned a lot from the historical sites on both sides of the approach. It really made me realise that it is a sacred mountain. Nestled in the scenic Yabakei area, 甘味処 禅海茶屋 is a delightful stop for anyone craving a sweet treat. This charming establishment offers an array of soft serve ice cream flavors, with seasonal options like peach and black sesame available during summer months. Guests can also indulge in their dango soup and dango matcha set, which are both delicious but vary in temperature and portion size.

There are few seats. I ordered the dango soup set meal, but it was disappointing because it wasn't very hot. The ingredients were large and the portion was voluminous. The taste is lighter than expected. The matcha warabi mochi dessert was delicious. Although it was November 24th, it was supposed to be the autumn leaves season, but it was a little early. In the summer, they have peach and black sesame. I ordered the dango soup and the dango matcha set. Both were around 700 yen. The dango soup was small, so it was perfect to eat with the dango. Both were delicious, but I especially liked the dango. They were chewy and warm, and different from the dango you get at the supermarket. They were also able to accommodate a last-minute change in my order. Next time, I'd like to try the matcha frappe. (Translated by Google) We visited with three adults and three children, mostly elementary school-aged. We stopped in to take a break from the heat. It looked delicious, so we all bought soft-serve ice cream. My child mentioned there was a seating area upstairs, so we walked up a slight slope and found one. There were plenty of tables. There was one group of customers sitting there, so we tried to sit down, but the staff vigorously stopped us. We had previously asked if we wanted dine-in or takeout, and we said takeout, so if we wanted to sit down, we had to sit outside. We said we didn't know there was an eat-in area upstairs, but since we'd initially said takeout, we couldn't sit down. They told us to sit outside if we wanted to. It would have been better if they'd told us where to sit from the start. They wanted us to sit outside in the scorching heat, so we ate standing up in the souvenir section, feeling sorry for our elementary-aged children. One of them even sat on the floor because he wanted to sit down. That's just the way the place is. It's understandable that they have a certain attitude, but apologizing in a reply comment would only make things worse, so please strictly adhere to the store's rules. I would have liked to sit if I could pay the difference, so I wanted that suggestion.
