A walk on a concrete path along the beautiful gorge brings you to this shrine in the cave. What's different are the many, many cairns (" towers of stones") piled around the place - unusual and intriguing to see. It’s associated with the legend of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, who hid herself in a cave and plunged the world into darkness. In response, the other deities gathered at Amanoyasukawara to devise a way to lure her out and restore light to the world.

Nice and tranquil wooden shrine amongst tall lush trees. The shrine gate is in the middle of the path and you can continue through the path to exit on the other side where you can find the path to the famous shrine in the cave.

When you visit places like this you almost feel like it's a dream as no way beautiful places like this actually exist. Being by water and nature makes it so calming even amongst a group.

Beautiful! This shrine is believed to be where Amaterasu (Japanese creation story goddess) hid herself in a cave. Be aware that to see one area, you must go in with the priest and whatever group is currently amassed there. There are NO pictures allowed once you pass through the small gate, as it is a sacred area. You can walk about 10 minutes past the shrine to see another area surrounded by rock piles, and photos are fine there. It’s a nice walk through a forest and along a small river. There is a small, free parking lot, but it seems to fill up quickly.

There're only a few staff members who served on the restaurant, so that you're waiting for them to order something. I ordered a refill rice, but the waitress/waiter is very busy, so I finally waited for a few minutes to get a rice, but the beef is already cool down.

Owner was very friendly though and kept asking us to kindly wait for a seat. We had to wait outside in the hot sun cos there was no place in the restaurant...a bit cramped. Does to be removed at the table, then sit cross legged at the low tables. But the wait was worth it. The nanben was so crispy and delicious! Definitely worthwhile to dine here😋😋😋

Set meal comes with fish and rice balll. The fish however is small and there’s not much protein. Staff is polite and helpful. Have the somen and rainbow trout set! So much fun catching the somen when it flows down the bamboo. Don’t worry if you miss them as the staff have a basket at the end to catch the noodles for you!

Came for a late lunch at 2pm and place was empty as one could expect. Service was pretty poor which matched the quality of the food. Ordered the chicken Nanba set 1300 yen and Nanba set with fish 1700 yen and the quality and quantity was poor as well. The chicken was a oily poorly fried dish (tasted ok just so oily) Size was small for the amount, we ended up leaving to eat again.

Patronised on a weekday as lunch is included in the tour. It was served in a set menu - grilled fish (yamame) set, costs ¥1850. The food was average, very generous portion, and so very filling.

It’s touristy, so manage your expectations accordingly. It was fun trying to catch the noodles as it flows along the bamboo ‘stream’. It probably comes out in 3 batches per order. So meaning each person gets about 3 tries to pick your noodles. The remaining / ‘uncaught’ noodles will be brought to you in a separate basket. I went around 2pm+ and had to wait for about 15 mins as the restaurant was busy. You can order the noodles as is (not enough for a meal) but they do come along in a set meal with a choice of vegetables (steamed pumpkin, konnyaku, rice ball, salad, tofu etc) or grilled fish (very salty). We also tried the beef udon and it was tasty.

We had the Miyazaki wagyu beef and river trout (yamame) set meals and it was delicious. The service was excellent as well. The restaurant is quite easy to find as it is located at the junction to the entrance of Takachiho Gorge, with public parking next door.

Cute little restaurant specialising in vege centric cuisine, however they do serve takachiho beef on request. Some of the food is abit too salty to our preference but will still recommend a visit here for the excellent view. For those who are driving, be warned that the slopes leading to the Tanohana are quite steep.

The coronavirus measures they are taking are a bit extreme and biased. We went in a group of four, and the lady spaced out the seats so that we wouldn't even be facing each other..And when we tried to shift and bring the chairs together she was quite rude in saying no don't do that. I would understand if this rule was applied to all customers, but there was another group of 3 prior to us who were sitting comfortably as regular people would around a table. Maybe they were local and since we were not, we had to oblige to the special rules which felt discriminatory.. The lady also asked for our phone numbers. When asked why she replied it was also part of the precautionary measure. If you are going to make out of the ordinary rules and expect customers to follow them, at least explain everything and ask the customer for their cooperation politely. The food was good but the attitude of the lady was quite frankly rude and spoiled my whole experience.

Fantastic American diner that was conveniently located outside of Takachiho. Everywhere was fully booked for dinner and we drove about 5 mins out to eat here. There was a drink and soup bar option, ordering was simple via QR code. Hamburg steak was good too.

We were staying nearby in Takachiho and decided to head here for dinner one night. We were unsure as they didn't offer an english menue however, we were able to use a translator and place our order with ease. The food was great. We had the meat skewers,fried chicken,fried miso tofo, and eggplant soup. All the dishes were served with a good amount of fresh vegetables and fruits as well. Small local run restaurant that did not disappoint

Ken Chan is a truly wonderful local izakaya that captures the friendly spirit of Takachiho. Everything here is reasonably priced, and the food quality is far beyond what you’d expect for the price. The atmosphere is warm and lively, filled with locals enjoying their evening — it feels like stepping into the real Japan. The highlight for me was definitely the Takachiho beef. It was tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Every dish we tried was delicious, from small appetizers to hearty mains. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive, even though the place was quite busy. If you’re visiting this area, Ken Chan is absolutely worth a stop. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy great food, and chat over a drink. Just one small note — the sweet potato shochu here is quite strong, but that only adds to the authentic experience!

The skewers are really nice. Skip the chicken nanban though. Their version is more deep fried flour coated chicken filets with sauce. Their salad as well as miso grilled vegetables/eggplant with tofu are very nice especially the miso on eggplant.

Visited with my wife after the Miyazaki gorge. It was close to our hotel. The food was fantastic and delivered to our table faster than expected. The server was friendly, respectful and just made us feel honestly welcome. Next time I’m in that area, I will definitely stop by. If you’re heading to this town to take a boat ride on the gorge, you should definitely check out Izakaya Kenchan.

The place is super clean and managed by a kind couple who greeted us with warm smiles. I wish I could’ve chatted with them more! There were also some locals dining in, which always feels like a good sign. No wait when we arrived. There are about 3-4 tables in the main space, a small counter for five, and an extra room inside with two more tables—great use of space for such a small spot. Menus are available in English, and just a heads-up: they accept cash only. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re exploring Takachiho and craving a satisfying bowl of ramen in a welcoming atmosphere.

Arrived by bus from Mount Aso to see Takachiho Gorge, but the sun had already set. Decided to have a quick meal before taking the bus to Nobeoka and found this gem. Ordered the signature ramen and a Set C, which came with normal size ramen and pork belly on rice. The eggs were cooked perfectly as you can see. Also had a plate of gyōza. Itbwas during a flood s we probably got more water than the average visitor but still stunning. The path past it ended up closing a little while later so we had to do the reverse loop via the road. So glad we get in before the waters came up too much and got to walk past the thunderous fall (and got very wet 🤣)

We arrived at Takachiho from ASO area around 11am. Parking lots 1, 2 & 3 (pay lots closest to the falls) were full as expected. We were directed to lot 4 which looks like a brand new lot with lots of spaces and free to park. But it was a very warm & sunny October day so we didn’t feel like walking over 30 min back to the main falls area. We backtracked and ended up parking at the shrine lot. Took about 20 minutes to hike down to the falls. It’s not too bad downhill. More of a workout hiking back up the steep winding road on the way back but glad we did stop to view the gorge. It’s quite magical despite the crowds!! Note: when we left around 12:30pm many cars were leaving so they re-opened the parking lots. Maybe U have to get there early or later in the day to park close to the gorge.
