Yanagawa in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Yanagawa, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Yanagawa is best known for its picturesque canals, where traditional boat rides (kawakudari) pass under low bridges and give a close-up view of this former castle town’s historic atmosphere. The city preserves samurai-era sites such as the Ohana villa and its Shotoen garden, once the residence of the Tachibana clan. Local cuisine is a highlight, especially steamed eel (unagi no seiro-mushi), a regional specialty. Seasonal events, including the Hinamatsuri “Sagemon” Festival with colorful hanging decorations, add extra appeal in spring.
With favorites like Yanagawa Sunflower Park, Mihashira Shrine, and Tachibana Museum Yanagawa, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Restaurant Taigetsu-kan and Ringer Hut Fukuoka Yanagawa so you can get the best taste of Yanagawa while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Yanagawa Kanko Kaihatsu K.K. (Shogetsu Punting Station) offers an enchanting experience as you glide through a picturesque network of tree-lined waterways, including the historic moat surrounding a samurai-era castle. The punting tours are not just about the serene scenery; they also feature delightful stops along the way, such as a charming floating shop where you can indulge in ice cream and snacks.
I bought the Yanagawa Dazaifu ticket. Very good and worth it. Available as a digital pass (buy from app) or paper from the ticket counter. Arriving at Yanagawa station, there was a staff who graciously pointed out to us about the free shuttle bus service to bring us to the boat station. Which we didn’t know about. Awesome! As for the boat ride, Very good. Lovely singing by the boatman. Thumbs up for the free shuttle bus provided to and fro the boat docking points. And clear instructions provided on paper as well on how to get to the bus pick up point.

This is one of the main embarkation points for the boat rides. They leave as soon as there are enough riders to fill a boat. It was an extremely warm Oct. day. Glad we brought our water and hats. U can buy cold drinks from the vending machines in the office & rent a fisherman’s straw-hat for ¥200? Our boat also stops by a floating snack shop along the waterway where one can order ice cream or bottled drinks. At the end of the boat ride, U exit onto a rest stop w/restaurants, gift shops & restrooms. Within a 10 minute walk there’s an old town area with many popular unagi restaurants. There’s also a free shuttle bus that will take U back to the starting point parking lot or the train station in town. There is no signage for the bus stop. Make sure U follow the map they handed out with your boat ticket.

One of the best experience I had during my Kyushu trip. It was raining like mad actually but the punting experience was phenomenal. Punter is very interactive. The scenes was exceptional especially when passing under bridge. Buy the one day dazaifu yanagawa package ticket at Tenjin Nishintetsu that inclusive of punting ticket and transportation ticket to and back from these 2 places departing from Hakata. It also includes shuttle service from yanagawa nishintetsu to punting Station. A must try trip, definitely worth it

🌸 The weather was hot that day, but thanks to the beautiful scenery and the friendly boat rider, it was a wonderful experience! It was a 40-minute course for 2,000¥. The boatman explained everything along the river in both Japanese and English, and even sang for us. Truly enjoyable and relaxing — highly recommended! 🚤✨
Thin Z — Google review
A must activity in Fukuoka. It's just an hour train ride from Hakata. The singing boatmen will keep you entertained while you stare at the beautiful sceneries across Yanagawa canals. 🤩💯✨️
Bianca M — Google review
A truly enjoyable Yanagawa canal tour! The boatman (Nara -san) skillfully navigated the narrow waterways, even performing jumps over bridges like a ninja. He made us laugh by asking everyone to duck under a bridge that only looked low — and even sang a few Japanese songs to keep us entertained. A relaxing, fun, and authentic experience in Yanagawa! Highly recommended!🚤🎶🌸
Ong I — Google review
i throughly enjoyed the sightseeing tour, however if you would like to see them climbing on the bridge and jumping back down on the boat like a ninja, this tour operator does not do that. still i enjoyed my time as the boatmen would sing from time to time and keep us entertained while telling us about the history of the city :) !

Mihashira Shrine, located in Yanagawa, holds a significant connection to the Tachibana family and is dedicated to honoring Tachibana Muneshige, Tachibana Ginchiyo, and Tachibana Dosetsu. Originally established within the grounds of Yanagawa Castle in 1783, it was later relocated and rebuilt in its current location in 1826. The shrine is currently undergoing reconstruction after being destroyed by fire in 2005.
beautiful shrine with a lot of ornaments spots which is really pretty for photo. the area is quite big with a garden as well. nearby Yanagawa Kanko so you can walk when visiting the canal 😊

I visited it on a Thursday starting 4-5pm and it was really pretty. Well, I say pretty because it looks so peaceful, calming, and relaxing–and that's just what I like. It wasn't busy when I visited and I just passed by friendly old people taking a stroll/jog around the place since I guess there are some houses once you go past the bridge and first huge shrine. Loved the pond. I even saw a turtle there haha. Really loved the whole place^^

The Great Wisteria of Nakayama is a breathtaking springtime destination that draws visitors from far and wide, especially during its annual festival starting in late April. This enchanting site features a stunning pergola-covered walkway adorned with vibrant wisteria blooms, creating an idyllic atmosphere for leisurely strolls. While the peak viewing time can lead to crowds, the experience is undeniably magical, particularly when the flowers are illuminated at night until 10 PM.
If you looking for easier way to visit a place to view Wisteria, one in Nakayama is what you looking for. Very easy to transit. There’re special shuttle buses that took you between 2 major stations in Yanagawa to this beautiful site of Wisteria. Although it’s quite small and very local places (No group tour, just local people) so couldn’t compare with the famous one Kawachi Wisteria Garden. But it’s definitely way much easier to travel to see Wisteria and enjoy peacefully.
Mind T — Google review
The season of Wisteria flowers is almost finished. A little bit disappointed. Hope will come here next year to catch the right time of the flowers.

very disappointed festival. nothing to see literally, only some small street food stores opend and flower site is so small, additionally steel tube on wisteria trees bothered me to feel natural things.

we didn't check that it only opens in Apr-May, and we went there when it's October. 😅 this is all I see there! but it's an amazing next level town that city people will never experience it.

We visited there (Kumano Shrine 熊野神社) in the afternoon of 21 April 2019. It was fully blossom and the place was crowded with visitors. No admission fee to visit the place. When we got there, the car park next to the shrine was full and the staff pointed us to the temporary car park where is 5 mins away by car. Very frequent free shuttle bus is offered from the temporary car park to the shrine. It would be perfect if there is less visitors but it is a Sunday after all!
Wong P — Google review
Nothing to see here on the 1st of April. This is maybe artificial because it looked like they didn't install the flowers yet. Or maybe I just came in the wrong time. A friend just looked it up online and its stating that wisteria bloom in late April/early May. It is also hard to get here. I was walking for 30/40 minutes from the nearest station.

Hiyoshi Shrine, a small yet historically significant shrine built in 1290, is located next to a canal. During the Hina Matsuri festival, a large doll mask is placed over the entrance, marking the start of the festival in Yanagawa. The shrine also houses a smaller shrine for protection against smallpox and features works from renowned local writers. Visitors can obtain a Goshuin stamp for 700 yen and enjoy the serene surroundings by the river.

Nestled in the serene town of Yanagawa, YANAGAWA TACHIBANA-TEI OHANA is a luxurious retreat that beautifully marries traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comforts. Established in 1738 by the 5th lord of Yanagawa, Tachibana Sadayoshi, this elegant villa was originally designed as a residence for his family and has since become a cherished symbol of the region's rich cultural heritage.
This place is absolutely amazing! It’s the former residence of a samurai, and you can see authentic samurai artifacts and learn about their history. The museum is small but very interesting, with well-preserved items that give you a glimpse into the samurai era. The house itself is huge and impressive, showcasing traditional architecture and design. A truly unique and memorable experience for anyone visiting Yanagawa. Highly recommended for history enthusiasts and those curious about Japan’s rich culture!

This was my second stay since the renovation, and the newly renovated guest rooms were exceptional, with meticulous attention to detail in the facilities and amenities. The stay was truly special, allowing me to relax while enjoying the views of the building, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and the scenic landscape of the SHOTOEN Garden. In addition, the hospitality and service level of the staff has improved with each visit, making this a place I would like to stay again and again. Thank you very much for another wonderful experience. I will probably stay at Ryokan Ohana again soon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The rooms and gardens were beautiful. The breakfast was one to remember. We loved the tofu dish served. The team of staff was very professional and welcoming. The lounge area also served a good range of drinks at no extra charge, coffee, milk, sake, and sparkling vinegar that was refreshing.

Situated right near where the boat ride ends, Yanagawa Tachibana-Tei Ohana is really a great place to visit even for a meal. We didn't stay in the hotel, but we did book a private room at their restaurant (which you will need a reservation for). The private rooms have access and a beautiful view of the serene garden while you enjoy a kaiseki meal. They also serve a great unagi no seiromushi (a marinated and steamed unagi and served in laquerware).

A gem situated in a small and quiet town, I enjoyed myself fully and the rooms were amazing. Solid mattresses that didn't give me a backache and hinoki bathtubs were the best! 🫡

Staying in Ohana was incredibly peaceful and serene. My room was pristine and window above the bed had a view that looked like a painting. I truly appreciate all sustainable and nature preserving practices that this facility has. Location is lovely and the Ryokan breakfast is a must have. The history behind this facility is incredible. However, more than any other things I have mentioned Ohana’s best asset is its people. There was a smiling, welcoming and helpful face at every turn and they have gone above and beyond to make my stay unforgettable.
Natasha H — Google review
My wife and I had a delightful stay at Ohana House in Yanagawa, Japan, and it was a perfect romantic getaway. We stayed in the Garden Suite (Kuromatsu), their premier accommodation, which was an absolute highlight. This exclusive corner room on the top floor offered panoramic views of the Shoto-en Garden, the Western-style Seiyokan, and the Grand Hall, immersing us in the estate’s historic charm. The room featured a serene tatami area with traditional shoji screens, complemented by a cozy Western-style bedroom with plush bedding that ensured a restful night. We loved the thoughtful amenities: a tea ceremony set with high-quality loose-leaf tea, an electric kettle, and elegant champagne and wine glasses that added a touch of sophistication. The yukata robes and geta sandals were a charming nod to tradition, while the modern bathroom with bidet toilet, hairdryer, and premium skincare products made our stay effortlessly comfortable. The in-room Wi-Fi, LCD TV, refrigerator, and safe added convenience without detracting from the authentic ryokan experience. Waking up to the sight of the garden’s black pines through the large windows felt like a private moment with history. The Shoto-en Garden, a national place of scenic beauty since 1978, was stunning. We strolled its paths, captivated by the tranquil pond, sculpted islands, 280 ancient black pines, and 14 stone lanterns. The evening light-up cast a magical glow over the garden, enhancing its timeless beauty. The Tachibana Museum, included with our stay, offered a fascinating look into the 400-year legacy of the Tachibana clan, with artifacts like samurai armor and Edo-era crafts brought to life by a guided tour. We also took the Yanagawa canal tour, which passed right by Ohana House. Drifting along the waterways in a traditional donkobune boat, we were enchanted by the boatsman’s soulful songs, a local tradition that perfectly framed the view of Ohana’s elegant estate against the backdrop of willows and pines. It was a highlight of our trip. Breakfast and dinner were enjoyable, featuring Yanagawa’s famous seiro-mushi steamed eel and fresh local sides, served with a view of the garden. The meals were satisfying and beautifully presented, complementing the peaceful setting. From the Grand Hall’s morning light to the moonlit pond at night, Ohana House is a must for couples seeking a blend of history, culture, and comfort.

We stayed one night in a big spacey room. The view was amazing looking right at the gardens, it was wonderful to chill on the sofa while drinking up the view. The room smelled a bit strange, I wonder if it is because of all the wood I could not place the smell. We could go to a nearby bath house for free, very convenient and not crowded. The staff was very helpful and the location is just perfect. I don't think you can find a more beautiful hotel in Yanagawa. You can get on a boat right in front of the hotel, too.

Yanagawa Sunflower Park is a stunning sight located just 20 minutes from the city center, boasting around 500,000 sunflowers that bloom biannually from mid-July to early August. The park offers a picturesque view of the Ariake Sea and is perfect for sightseeing. Visitors are advised to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and an umbrella as there are no nearby shops. It's recommended to visit on a cloudy day if you plan to stay for an extended period.
Beautiful place to see and take pictures of, I see alot of comments saying they were too late to see them, this year was from September 16 to 23rd approx.but times defer each year so I would to check their Instagram, they post updates and % of the total blooming of the sunflowers as each time is different because of temperature, etc. @Yanagawa_himawari is their Instagram.

Visited in September a few days after it was opened for the Sunflowers. It was spectacular even though the Sunflower weren't huge like i imagined. ¥500 for the parking. Super hot while I was there, everyone was sweating and complaining about the heat.

Absolutely stunning sunflower park! It’s a little far out so you’ll have to drive there. There’s an outdoor parking lot nearby, and you just have to pay them a very small amount. There’s also a little shop there that sells soft serve ice cream and strawberry smoothies. Perfect for hot weather!

The traffic to the park takes me so long even I drive. There are uncountable number of junctions with traffic lights and we stopped a lot after getting off the highway. It took me another 30mins to queue for getting into the car park. But the flower field is fabulous !!! Just spare more time in driving.

I was kind of expecting a lot but there was no flowers there and toilets were closed. I do not know if it was due to the Covid-19 but after 1hour of driving I was still kind of disappointed. But I highly recommend the place if you are not confident in parking and want to practice parking.

Good but not great unagi meal, if anything pretty standard with the exception of being in a unique location. Also as some have posted, it's very roomy so bringing a pram shouldn't be a problem. Bear in mind you'll have to pay an entry fee if you you want to enter restaurant but at least you can check out and walk off the meal for a bit after. Ringer Hut Fukuoka Yanagawa is a popular and affordable restaurant known for its healthy menu options. The crunchy udon and gyoza set is a favorite among visitors, served promptly and satisfyingly. Some patrons note that the taste has become more health-oriented over time, possibly due to a shift towards healthier eating habits. The restaurant's light and spicy champon is particularly praised for its variety of ingredients and appealing aroma.

(Translated by Google) I like champon, and since this store is close by, I sometimes get takeout. I call to order so that I can pick it up smoothly, but they never answer the phone. I called three times after waiting for an hour, and still no one answered. I end up ordering at the drive-thru and waiting for over 15 minutes. We customers are also restaurant owners, and I understand that we usually go during busy times, so it's busy, but can't they just answer the phone at least once? There may be various reasons why the store can't answer the phone, but I would like them to improve this as soon as possible. Also, even if I order loudly at the drive-thru, it seems like the staff has a hard time hearing me, so they end up coming out to take my order, which I find inefficient. Depending on the day, the food is either bland or incredibly salty. I will avoid this store in the future and try a different one, even though it's farther away.

Unagi restaurant
Restaurant
Wakamatsuya is a long-standing eatery known for its steamed and grilled eel dishes, offering a traditional tatami room and Zen garden for a complete dining experience. The signature dish, the steamroller, features eels and white rice cooked to perfection. The fluffy texture of the eel blends with the sauce-soaked rice, creating a delightful flavor in every bite.
First time eating Unagi no Seiromushi. This is one of the most delicious eel we've had. The quality is top notch, taste and smell superb. The eel's bone is an interesting dish. A little bit salty and very crunchy, really fun to eat. Recommend to try it out if your teeth are okay with hard stuffs. Tamakoyaki with dashi is nice. Mild flavor and fluffy. Very easy to eat. They also have other dish like Oyakodon too. The restaurant is a little bit inside from the street so the atmosphere is very peaceful and quiet, with the view of Japanese style garden. Staffs are very helpful and friendly. Outstanding restaurant.

A very nice and heritage restaurant nestled in Japanese garden. We had the grilled eel rice, grilled ell egg roll and crispy ell bone. Both are super delicious, the best we had so far in all our trips to Japan over the years!

***MUST TRY*** This place is amazing for both atmosphere and meal. Combination of both enhances experience of Japanese dining. Worth a visit. • Timing: opens till 14:30 hrs then afternoon break before dinner. • Queue: went there around 13:10 hrs and people started to leave after lunch. Waited for like 10 minutes to get table. • Atmosphere: got a table for two in another building which has access from the back side. I didn’t know that this place is huge! Shoes off and on slippers inside. Tatami mat, traditional Japanese music, Japanese garden view. • Menu: A set with soup & pickles or with additional salad & egg rolls with eels. • Jou-Seiromushi (full course) - very yummy. Rice was flavoured with eel sauce. Super tasty. As the whole box was steamed before being served, rice and eels remained hot until my last bite. Loving it! • Price: worth all the ¥

Overhyped. The unagi looks great, but it is normal. There are better ones out there. If you are in Yanagawa, then of course, come here. But you don't have to make a trip here just for it.

Best unagi rice I have ever had. I got the set and everything tasted so good. The rice was savoury and fragrant after sucking in all the juice/ sauce from the eel. The eel omelette was delicious as well. The soup was the cherry on top for me. They put a tiny slice of lemon in it and it was so refreshing. I have never had soup like that. It was truly satisfying.

Hakushu Kitahara is known as a modern Japanese poet and nursery rhyme writer, and has created many masterpieces of nursery rhymes such as ``Machibouke'' and ``Konomichi.'' His nursery rhymes are still loved by many people today for their beautiful depictions of nature and warm words that depict a child's heart. The charm of Hakushu nursery rhymes lies in their lyrical expression. For example, in ``Machibouke,'' the song depicts a sunset scene in great detail, and sings of the sad feelings of a child. In addition, ``This Path'' incorporates the sounds of flowers and insects on the roadside to express children's inquisitiveness and joy. Hakushu's nursery rhymes are not just children's songs; they contain universal themes that adults can relate to as well. For example, ``Machibouke'' reflects not only the feelings of children waiting, but also the loneliness and anticipation deep within the hearts of adults. Hakushu nursery rhymes have a universal appeal that is loved throughout the ages. This is probably because Hakushu's rich sensitivity and deep love for nature and children created a world of beautiful words. If you are visiting by car, we recommend the nearby Honjo Tourist Parking Lot (500 yen). There is a fee to visit, but it's not too expensive considering that you can also enter the adjacent Tachibana family museum. We entered the museum first, and from the entrance you can tell that it is a supporter of the founder of the domain, Tachibana Muneshige, and his wife, Ginchiyo. The main exhibits are armor and shell matching items made by successive domain lords, and although it is small, it is doing a good job for a small domain (although it may be because the surrounding lords are all monsters such as Shimazu, Hosokawa, and Kuroda). At Shotoen, we will first visit the interior of the Japanese-Western style mansion, but since we visited in March, there were Hina dolls and Hina decorations everywhere. The "sagemon," mobile-like decorations that hang from the ceiling and are unique to this region, were particularly splendid. There were also a row of golden helmets for the boys, which were unique to the Tachibana family. The garden is not large, but it is well-maintained, including the pond, and is a feast for the eyes. It's not a bad spot to stop by for a day trip. Nestled in the charming fishing town of Kaneyanagawa, Okinohatasuitengu, also affectionately known as Suiteng-san, is a quaint shrine that serves as a spiritual hub for visitors. This compact structure sits at the end of a river course where the landscape takes on an enchanting curve. While it may appear serene most days, excitement fills the air during festival times when the deity comes alive with youthful energy.
The finishing point of the punting boat ride. Traditional homes and historical buildings can be found here. There are a few well known unagi restaurants here. The price charged here will be higher.

This small shrine located at Kanagawa, Inarimachi is just by the canal bridge. It is very aged n picturesque. Although there was no festival, it would be used for the floating platform festival in May for 3 days. Several other boats/barges also combine so that music performers with instruments can play when the prayers start. Generally the festival n prayers are a colourful event with participants in traditional garb n also traditional music being played. I understand that the prayers are for safety, well being of matters connected to “water” (meaning river, fishing, boats, ships, fishermen etc) This shrine, which is part of the bigger Suitengu Temple) then takes on an important role when the festival draws near. Many stalls are also set up alongside this canal during festival time. This shrine is also in a central location n very near the Tourist Information Center- a perfect place to start n end your sight seeing of this canal district/town. Many nice restaurants very nearby especially those specialised in Unagi/eel.

Okinohata Suitengu is a historic shrine with over 140 years of history, enshrining the three gods of Inari Shrine, Yatake Shrine, and Suitengu Shrine. It is affectionately known locally as "Suitengu-san." During the festival, the area around the shrine becomes a pedestrian zone, with numerous street stalls lined up, attracting visitors of all ages. Another highlight, adding to the Yanagawa scenery, is the floating stage "Sanshinmaru," a group of six boats tied together, floating on the moat. It moves slowly over the course of three days and three nights, adding to the excitement of the festival. There are plenty of attractions aboard "Sanshinmaru," including a dedication of "Suitengu Hayashi" (also known as Dutch Hayashi) music by local children and a theatrical performance by a theater troupe. This festival also serves as a prayer for protection from drowning, and wooden gourd charms to prevent drowning are distributed during the festival. (Translated by Google) Thank you!!! I participated in the festival at Okihata Suitengu Shrine. There were rows of food stalls, and the children seemed very satisfied. There was also a dance performed on a large boat, with drums and flutes, and it was very lively. In addition to the large boats, there was also a river boat ride. Many festivals these days are deserted due to a lack of staff, so it was great to see such a lively festival for the first time in a while! As expected, the townscape of our own Yanagawa is also amazing!!! Yanagawa Ariake Sea Aquarium is a privately-owned aquarium located in Yanagawa City. Despite its unassuming exterior, it offers a handmade feel and unexpected enjoyment for visitors. The aquarium is situated near tourist attractions such as Okinohata and the Hakushu Memorial Hall. Visitors can purchase food to feed the fish in the large tank, which react to the sound of coins being thrown into a piggy bank by eager visitors.

I'm not sure if it was because there was a festival on the day I went or if it's always like this, but we were able to choose two Yanagawa Aquarium stickers and a handkerchief for free. There were fish ranging from small to huge! It was my first time seeing a live Warasuba. So cute! There was also an old diving suit on display. On the second floor, you could make shell art (draw pictures and stick stickers and shells on wooden boards) for free, which the kids had a great time doing. Even though the kids were so particular about the exhibit that they stayed for a long time, the staff didn't frown and instead taught us a lot about the creatures of Yanagawa! Also, for a limited time, there was a sword on display. It was a sword associated with the Yanagawa domain! On November 3, 2023, three of us from Nomozaki, Nagasaki City, arrived 15 minutes before closing time. We were very grateful for your flexible accommodation, even at closing time. It truly seems like an aquarium handcrafted by local residents and children, and we were deeply impressed by its very existence. Our companions thoroughly enjoyed feeding the fish in the large tank at the back. It was fascinating to see the fish excitedly approach when they dropped money into the container, knowing that they would receive food. It was also my first time seeing a Japanese giant walrus eel up close; they truly are an alien fish! There were snacks that kids would want, various goods for sale on the second floor, and a photo exhibition was also taking place when I visited. There were a variety of fun elements, and I felt a unique sense of familiarity. I am also working hard to create a small aquarium in Nomozaki, so this was a very educational experience. I am really glad I was able to visit. I thought the 300 yen admission fee was well worth it. I think it would be wrong to criticize it by comparing it to aquariums that receive an order of magnitude more money from large corporations or the public. I hope everyone will visit at least once. I sincerely hope that it will continue to operate for many years to come. Thank you very much. (Note: The photos were taken and posted with permission. I came by after having lunch and making my way back to see the Shoto-en Garden. This was a well preserved and maintained house, with a beautiful garden. It was really nice to walk through the rooms, seeing all the old art and designs, and also to walk out into the garden area and feel the cool breeze pass through. It's a great place to spend a little bit of time and just relax.

(Translated by Google) Adults: 100 yen. The Former Tojima Family Residence is a precious samurai residence remaining in the former Yanagawa castle town. It is a two-story thatched building, built in 1828 by Yoshida Kanetomo, who held important positions such as churoishoku (chief elder) in the Yanagawa domain, as a retirement residence, along with its garden. It was later presented to the Tachibana family, the domain's lord, and used as the domain's teahouse. The house features sukiya-style design throughout, and is notable for its extensive use of bamboo. The entire residence, along with its pond garden with a tatami room, which draws water from the canal that runs through the former Yanagawa castle town, creates a tasteful and tranquil space. To preserve the view, no pillars were erected in the southeast corner of the tatami room. Since the Meiji period, the house has primarily been used as a residence, and in 1957, the building and garden were both designated as cultural properties by Fukuoka Prefecture as a typical example of samurai residences in the Yanagawa region. The building was donated to Yanagawa City in 2001, and underwent preservation and repair work over a period of three years until 2003, restoring it to its appearance at the end of the Edo period. It opened as a cultural property public facility in April 2004. The garden was designated a national place of scenic beauty in 1978. (Translated by Google) The crescent moon design at the entrance is impressive, and it is a modest thatched roof house. It has an atmosphere that seems easy to live in, comparable to any other samurai house I have seen, such as Kitsuki, Usuki, Shimabara, the Okibe residence in Kumamoto, the Katsura residence in Hofu, and Hagi. I visited on a bitterly cold day at the end of January, on a freezing morning when the pond in the garden was frozen over, but the sunlight reached the back of the room, brightening every corner of the room except for the toilet, and I wanted to gaze at the garden forever. The crescent moon at the entrance is openwork when you go around to the tea room side. The light and dark patterns on the karakami sliding doors are illuminated by the morning sun, and I felt an elegance that makes a moderate statement without being too obtrusive. I think it is a design that is restrained, typical of a samurai house. If I have the opportunity, I would like to visit in all four seasons. [Additions and corrections from here] Architecture and gardens from Bunsei 11 (1828). Although it is a small mansion, it is a prestigious samurai residence equipped with a ceremonial platform. It was originally a retirement home for a mid-ranking samurai of the Yanagawa domain, but was remodeled to become a teahouse for the Tachibana family, the lord of Yanagawa domain. The pond-style garden, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, has a small but authentic pond with a sandbar, and the overall layout is well-organized. The water for the pond is drawn from the east by the creek that runs through the town of Yanagawa, and flows out to the west. The bright red torii gate of Inari, enshrined near the water intake, is also an accessory to the garden. The garden is filled with pine plantations typical of a samurai garden, and small, rustic mountain lanterns floating in the pond give the impression of a samurai spirit of respect for simplicity, while the artificially sculpted octagonal water basin on the veranda catches the eye. The octagonal shape is probably based on feng shui, and the coral and pure white limestone placed at the base of the basin are an impressive arrangement. A row of stepping stones stretches from the shoe-removing stone on the veranda to the pond, crossing the sandbar, into the pond, and across the pond to the opposite bank. As for the building, the tea room does not have a nijiriguchi (gateway), only a nobleman's door, and it has a rare small glass window, and the earthen wall of the tokonoma (alcove) has no corners on either side, forming a beautiful cave-like curve. The most distinctive feature of this tea room is probably the crescent-shaped shitaji window built beside the tokonoma (alcove). This window is located on the rear side of the entrance hall directly opposite the stage, and naturally the window is two sides of the same coin. From the entrance hall side, the window looks like a crescent moon, and from the tea room side behind, it looks like an early moon. The early moon is a symbol of Aizen Myoo, and in the custom of "Tsukimachi/Twenty-six Nights of the Moon," which was popular during the Edo period, it affirms lust. The early moon in a small tea room is quite an interesting idea, but this house was built with the moon-viewing event, which is also related to Tsukimachi, in mind, and moon-viewing in the Edo period was deeply connected to the prosperity of descendants. The tea room makes extensive use of bamboo, which is characteristic of sukiya architecture, and similar characteristics can be seen in various places within the house. The extensive use of bamboo gives a glimpse of the strong admiration for the "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove/Wei (Three Kingdoms period)," which was very popular among the samurai of the time. Since this house was originally a tea room, the sukiya layout is noticeable, but the whole house is designed in the shoin style typical of samurai. Chinese poems carved into the wooden doors and highlighted with white chalk powder are often seen in samurai residences of the same era, and here Li Bai's "Muddy Drinks" and Zhang Yu's "Composing Wine in the Lake" have been selected, indicating that a lot of sake was served in this teahouse. In addition, the "fukiyose-hisshi" (blow-over diamonds), which are indispensable for the overhead transoms through which nobles pass, are carved in various places, boasting the high dignity unique to the residences of high-ranking samurai.

Nestled in the heart of Yanagawa City, the ruins of Yanagawa Castle's main enclosure offer a fascinating glimpse into Japan's storied past. Originally renovated after the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara, this castle was once a prominent structure in Kyushu, boasting an impressive five-story tower. The site became significant under Muneshige Tachibana in 1620 when he reclaimed it for his family during the Meiji Restoration.

Yanagawaya, a renowned eatery specializing in grilled freshwater eel, offers a delectable culinary experience. The steamed rice, which is naturally savory, pairs perfectly with their homemade pickle platter. This assortment of pickles, elegantly presented in a stylish wooden box, provides a delightful alternative. Additionally, the accompanying sauce rice is complimentary and an excess portion can be quite overwhelming.

I can see lines of customers in front of a couple of other traditional eel restaurants but we were too hungry and hot to wait in the sun. The ladies serving us were friendly but did not speak any English. We had no problem ordering from the pictures on the menu. We had eel and other local fish for lunch. It was quite good. When we left the staff offered us folded origami packets with toothpicks as souvenirs. Very sweet!!

We had great time. CP value is very high, unagi for 1500 yen, great atmosphere. We will happily come again ; )

(Translated by Google) 1. This place has an incredible value, almost half the price of other places. 2. The eel tastes just like the sauce—every time I've tried it, it's the same. 3. They also have other main dishes to choose from, not just eel. Highly recommended! (Original) 1.

(Translated by Google) I'd give it about 10 stars! I had the eel hitsumabushi (1,500 yen). I was surprised that you could even get hitsumabushi for that price. I thought the quality was quite high for the price. I went with my child, and the proprietress was very kind to him and gave him free service. Thank you for your thoughtfulness! There are about 3 table seats and 5 counter seats. I went on a weekday at lunchtime, and there was no line to get in.

(Translated by Google) While the surrounding restaurants tend to be pricey, using bamboo steamers to cook their udon, Okitanan offers a delicious Hitsumabushi set meal for just 1,500 yen! They also have other menu items to enjoy. They also offer a variety of drinks, including cola floats, melon floats, and draft beer served in mugs! It was a fun lunch. The staff were cheerful and the interior was clean. The second floor even has karaoke and can be rented out for private use by groups. A recommended restaurant They even provided a translator for international guests.

Unagi restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Mingei Chaya Rokkyu is a quaint little restaurant in Yanagawa, Kyushu that offers the local specialty of steamed eel on rice. Despite the generally expensive nature of eel in Japan, the prices here are considered reasonable. The unagi is highly recommended and is said to be sensational, with friendly staff who provide good service even during busy times.
Fresh and yummy unagi with rice, Yanagawa-style. Staff also kindly provided a handheld fan, as it was really hot outside in the afternoon during summer.
Cheeky M — Google review
The eel was tinder and soft. However on the salty side and small portion. They also gift a small bag of eel bone snack that was yummy. Packaging is very nice.

I had an amazing Yanagawa-style unagi here and it was absolutely delicious. The dish was cooked perfectly, full of rich flavor, and felt truly authentic. The restaurant itself has an old, vintage charm that adds to the experience, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a piece of history. The staff were very nice and hospitable, making sure everything was just right. It’s a place that combines great food with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Yanagawa.

Can't really say much more than unagi tasted sensational. It was so delicious I lost words. We ordered Matsu (large) ¥3700. We didn't make a booking but didn't have to line up to get in before the midday on the weekday. Half of the table was reserved. Staff spoken english and were all friendly.
Saku N — Google review
The eel over rice is authentic and delicious. The rice is flavorful with the eel sauce, and the eel is well prepared, tender and tasty. The waitress are friendly, but the time to prepare the freshly made dish may take couple minutes.

Prompt and efficient service. Three piece steamed eel set was fantastic

Food is very good. Unagi specialty restaurant. Don't forget to put their spices. It does make the unagi taste better.

Steamed eel with a touch of egg is the classic to have in Yanagawa and Mingeichayarokki did not disappoint. It's one of the quaint little restaurants that you hope you find when you go to a new town. We went to Yanagawa specifically for the eel and this place did rival the other shops we visited. If you ever find yourself in Kyushu and like eel you should plan to stop by Yanagawa and this place.

Unagi restaurant
Restaurant
Ganso Motoyoshiya is a well-established eatery known for its specialty steamed eel boxes and traditional ambiance. The secret to their flavor lies in the sauce created by the first generation, which has been preserved for over 300 years. The original Motoyoshiya dates back to 1681 and has faithfully maintained the original sauce and cooking techniques. The restaurant's interior offers a distinct separation between rooms and common areas, with well-maintained tables and floor mats.
One of the top-listed Unagi. We visited Wisteria festival in Yanagawa and decided to have the Yanagawa-style Unagi or Unagi No Seiromushi which is the grilled eel top with sliced omelette. My Bf’s mom didn’t like Unagi before she had this authentic Unagi that give you a crispy texture on the outside but fluffy in the inside. Also, Unagi came with the right smokey smell and right amout of sauce. So now, she like having Unagi. We ordered 3 different menus but I recommend the set that came with the different side and dessert. It was worth every yen to spend. This place has English menu with image of the dish so it’s easy for you to order. The staff might be a bit quiet but they will help you if you need anything.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Apart from the fact that it is a decades old restaurant and novel in terms of how eel is cooked. I will trade this for a good bowl of ramen 🍜 Any day. The dinning is on a traditional Japanese floor table. What i felt would been helpful for tourists is to have some signboards, otherwise it’s easy to miss this place.

If you ever find yourself in Yanagawa, Unagi no seiromushi is a must try!!! The dish consists of shredded omelette, and grilled eel over rice in a steamed bamboo box. We visited Ganso Motoyoshiya, a long established restaurant since 1681 on a weekday. Upon arrival, I was drawn by the aroma of grilled eel and the charm of the restaurant. Please note they only accept Cash. They seemed busy but we didn’t have to wait for our table. We started off with chawanmushi and super crispy Eel bone karaage. They were amazing. It’s the best chawanmushi I had ever had. For the main dishes, both me and my husband ordered the toku seiromushi with kimo soup ( eel liver soup). My son got the Unagi don. The difference between seiromushi and unagi don is the cooking method. Unagi don is a bowl of rice topped with grilled eel and sauce. While, seiromushi is a steaming method in a bamboo box. We were both pleased with our meal. The grilled ell has a slight charred flavor, rich and incredibly delicious. The rice was enriched with the sweet savory eel sauce and absorbed all the flavor. I loved it so much! We left the restaurant so full and happy. It was one of my favorite meals of our trip in Kyushu.

The eel here was 5⭐️! I was very surprised on the difference of other eel around Japan and here. This place was fantastic! We tried eel in various forms and all was delicious! The steamed egg was my favorite as i love a really really delicious steamed egg! The interior of the restaurant is stunning. They have 3 parking lots around the restaurant. Menu in Japanese and English. Staff were so sweet and friendly.

One of the best unagi I have ever had in Japan. The eel meat is smoked with amazing woody aroma. Great sauce. Beautiful dining environment. It’s suggested to make a reservation by calling the restaurant in advance (Note: Staff can only communicate in Japanese)

Excellent food, friend happy service, the restaurant was full and we didn't need to wait long for a table. They have private rooms and larger ones. Tatami seating. We loved the food an the the atmosphere

Seiromushi with Kiki Soup. In Yanagawa, because of its hundreds of waterway and proximity to the sea, the white spotted eel is one of specialty dish here. The originator of this dish, Ganso Motoyoshiya, prepares the dish by covering a bed of rice with a special sauce and steaming it in a wooden steamer box known as a seiro. Fillets of charcoal-broil eel are coated in the special sauce and placed on the bed of rice with some finely sliced scrambled egg to add colour and flavour before the whole dish is steamed once more. The restaurant interior is of a traditional ambience and very well maintained. Worth a visit together with your river cruise.

We went here under the recommendation of Japanese, unfortunately it was 1/3 waste of money because 1/3 of the fish was too burnt that it tasted so bitter & bad. I really cannot recommend this place. I give 2 stars because the service was nice & atmosphere was good. This place also was more expensive than other places because it’s probably the most famous one.
