Garden

Heritage preservation
Historical landmark
Sengan-en is a historic Japanese garden and former residence of a feudal lord, showcasing traditional design and stunning volcano views. The garden was created over 300 years ago by the Shimadzu clan, incorporating the surrounding landscape into its layout. Visitors can explore bamboo groves, a scenic waterfall, and a serene pond. This picturesque setting was once used for famous poem-composing garden parties hosted by the Shimadzu family.
Truly worth visiting of you visit Kagoshima. A magnificent historical site with the majestic view of Sakurajima and breathtakingly beautiful Japanese garden. You might also see a wedding couple in Japanese traditional wedding dress too.
Subphanida K — Google review
Not without reason this place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sen-Gan Garden is a vast, beautiful, elongated complex made up of several smaller sections. It is a large and impressive estate with a perfect view of the Sakurajima volcano. On a sunny day with pleasant, not too hot weather, it is absolutely worth visiting. The garden offers a rich variety of nature, harmoniously combined with water, stone, earth, and living creatures. There are also charming little souvenir shops. Some parts look very new and fresh, while others show how nature has left its mark, with moss covering entire areas. This contrast creates a wonderful interplay between the natural and the cultivated. For anyone who can appreciate nature even a little, this is a truly beautiful and highly recommended place to visit.

Sengan-en is a 50,000-square-meter Japanese garden in Kagoshima, Japan, originally built in 1658 by the Shimadzu family. The garden is famous for its "borrowed scenery" (shakkei) design, which uses the active Sakurajima volcano as a natural "hill" and Kinko Bay as a "pond". The site includes the historic Iso Residence, which visitors can tour, the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, and various scenic areas with seasonal plants and historical elements. It is also a component of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Garden and architecture Borrowed Scenery: Sengan-en is a prime example of the "borrowed scenery" garden technique, where the surrounding landscape is incorporated as part of the garden's design. Main Features: The garden uses Sakurajima volcano as a natural background and Kinko Bay as a large pond, creating a spectacular, expansive view. Iso Residence: The historic villa was the main residence of the Shimadzu family and is open to the public. Inside, visitors can see beautiful decorations and enjoy the same views the family once did. Historical Elements: The garden features historical elements, such as the Tin Gate (Suzumon) and the first gas-powered lanterns in Japan, which were installed in 1857. Museum and cultural experience Shoko Shuseikan Museum: Located on the grounds, the museum showcases the history of the Shimadzu family and their cultural assets, which helped designate the area as a World Heritage Site. Cultural Events: The garden hosts various traditional Japanese culture events and activities, sometimes including opportunities to try on Japanese armor. Unique Shrines: Visitors can find the Nekogami Jinja Cat Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the cats the Shimadzu family brought back from Korea, with a nearby shop selling cat-themed goods. Visiting Sengan-en Location: Sengan-en is located north of downtown Kagoshima, Japan. Getting There: It is accessible by public transport, such as the Kagoshima City View bus. Time to Spend: You can spend a few hours or a full half-day exploring the gardens, mansion, and museum. Note: do not take selfies or wefies photos inside the main house

A truly lovely location. The gardens are very large and represent an excellent example of sub-tropical Japanese gardening. The house has excellent signage in English and Japanese, telling the history of this former samurai estate and the home of the current Emperor's great-grandmother.
Dan P — Google review
Visited in mid-July 2025 This is no ordinary manicured former feudal gardens mostly due to its unique background history. At the end of Edo period, the leaders of Shimazu clan who ruled the Satsuma Domain and own the plot of land that would be the complex itself decided to embark on some form of proto-industrialization to catch up with the Western world. They chose their own land at the edge of then-city limits of Kagoshima so that they could experiment whatever they wanted right under their noses. Some of the notable experiments they did were construction of blast furnaces, tinted glass production, and small dam and hydropower turbine to supply electricity to the Shimazu mansion nearby (which was one of the first buildings in the Satsuma Domain to use electricity back then). Nowadays the complex is open to the public, with sufficient amenities such as rest area, souvenir shops, restaurant, and cafes selling unique local dango rice cakes. Admission fee (which includes access to Shuseikan Museum next door) was a bit on expensive side - 1600 yen, but it's well worth it.
Lontongstroong — Google review
A lovely place which explores the history of the island and the role it played during the wars. It overlooks Sakurajima which was spectacular, and the tour of the main house was informative. We spent about 90 minutes walking the grounds and taking in the sights of the area – quiet, but also not isolated vibes.
Jonathan C — Google review
Wonderful visit. I spent about 2 hours on site simply walking around and enjoying the sights. It's a must do if you're in Kagoshima.
Fanelle — Google review
Really beautiful places worth visiting. You will learn a lot about the history of the prefecture in general and on Kagoshima in the history of Japan. The garden is beautiful, and is worth exploring. The royal house in the middle will dive you into a traditional Japanese moment. There are also a lot of gift shops with food/drinks of the region but also very beautiful crafts. If you have the chance to stop at the restaurant and/or the coffee shop you can admire Sakura-Jima with a traditional and local drink/food.

Shiroyama Park Observation Deck

Observation deck
Hiking area
Perched atop Shiroyama Park, the Observation Deck provides breathtaking panoramic views of Kagoshima city and its bay, as well as the active Sakurajima volcano. This popular spot is particularly enchanting after sunset when the city lights create a soothing ambiance. Accessible via the Kagoshima City View bus or by taxi, it's also within walking distance from the city center. The deck offers a picturesque vantage point to admire the natural beauty and urban landscape of Kagoshima.
The best observation deck in Kagoshima provides a free and direct view of Sakurajima. You can easily access it by car, bus or just by foot to enjoy the view at different timing. However, be ready to share the place with regular tour groups.
Terry C — Google review
A very nice view on the city and nearby volcano. It depends on the weather, so pick a sunny day rather. Approachable by bus, there is a possibility to return to the city by walk at the opposite side of the hill, using a 15-minute stairs path downhill.
GOLA G — Google review
Visited in mid-July 2025 Kagoshima has one of the most unusual and stunning sceneries among major Japanese cities, and there's no better way to enjoy the view atop the Shiroyama hill. The location is accessible by a tourist bus running loop in and around the downtown. However, I chose the slightly harder way by taking the stairs and hiking course from the base of the cliff next to Terukuni Shrine. Since it was during a weekday, the location was pretty deserted. This includes the small shopping area nearby (next to the car park and bus stop). It's a joy to enjoy the quaintness of the place and the crisp air a bit way from hustle and bustle below.
Lontongstroong — Google review
If you enjoy sightseeing, this is pretty much the way to go in Kagoshima. I love the history behind Saigo Takamori all around, the gentle breeze and sound of wildlife. There's a couple ways up Shiroyama, but I like the trek up the stairs through the back. The walk has a lot of shade, solid handrails, relatively safe. The actual top is a bit deserted but theres a few souvenir shops, ice cream shops, a park.
Andra C — Google review
I visited Shiroyama Park Observatory with my family, and it was absolutely amazing! The view from the top is breathtaking — you can see the entire city and surrounding nature all in one beautiful panorama. It’s a peaceful, refreshing spot that makes you appreciate how stunning Japan’s landscapes can be. The air feels clean, and the atmosphere is calm, making it a perfect place for families, couples, or anyone who just wants to relax and enjoy a scenic moment. We took lots of photos and spent quite a while just soaking in the view. Definitely one of the best spots for sightseeing and family travel. Highly recommended!

amazing view of Sakuramaji together with Kagoshima city😍 even met a cat there! Has seat, bathroom, rubbish bin, store, nice relaxing place. City viewing bus stop is nearby too, short walk only.
Guapi G — Google review
beautiful view down to the coast of sakurajima and kagoshima and of course up to the crater peak of the volcano. sunset view is also spectacular, all tho the last bus down is around 5pm, just before the sunset. however i walked up and down by myself, so it didn’t matter. one way takes about 1.5h. the observatory deck provides a small shop with beverages and souvenirs. an indoor area is available in case it’s windy. toilet and smoking area are also available.

The Shiroyama Park Observation Deck, located in Kagoshima, Japan, is a popular scenic spot offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, Kagoshima Bay, and the imposing Sakurajima volcano. Perched on Mount Shiroyama, the deck is surrounded by lush greenery, creating a peaceful ambiance. Visitors can enjoy stunning sunrises, sunsets, or simply admire the ever-changing face of Sakurajima, often shrouded in mist or emitting volcanic smoke. The observation deck is equipped with railings and seating, making it a great spot to relax while taking in the sights. On clear days, you can see as far as Kinko Bay and the surrounding islands. The park itself is steeped in history, as it was a key site during the Satsuma Rebellion. Visitors often enjoy strolling through the trails leading to the deck, which are lined with seasonal flowers and shaded by trees.

The Statue of Saigo Takamori is an 8-meter-tall monument honoring the iconic 19th-century general and leader of the Meiji Restoration. Saigo Takamori, often referred to as the last samurai, was a famous retainer of the Shimadzu clan. Born in Kagoshima, he quickly gained attention and became one of Lord Shimadzu Nariakira's trusted attendants.

Meiji ishin hero. No blood transition from samurai government to democratic government. There are Saigo sam's statue in Tokyo too. Photo area is a plus! (With a dog!) Get bus pass to visit. Shimazu clans (Kagoshima castle) spots are all walking distance from here. You can take tour from visitor's center next to Saigo San statue.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Kagoshima City Aquarium, also known as Suizoku-Kan Ioworld, is a popular attraction located near downtown and next to the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. The aquarium showcases a diverse range of marine life native to Kagoshima Prefecture, including stingrays, bluefin tuna, Japanese anchovy, a whale shark, squid, octopuses, and the Japanese giant crab. Visitors can also enjoy dolphin shows and feedings during their visit.
Place has an unassuming look from the outside but the experience is extremely cool and fun. Tickets were ¥1200 with the CUTE pass, ¥1500 without, and you can pay via credit card.
Ly L — Google review
After visiting Sakurajima island I visited the aquarium and enjoyed seeing so many interesting marine species. It was a very family friendly environment especially the dolphin show. Though the seals looked thoroughly bored 🦭🦭
Marion H — Google review
The Kagoshima Aquarium has a charming retro feel and is generally well maintained. One of the highlights is the view that greets you when the escalator leads straight into the center of the main tank. It’s a spectacular sight, though it might have been even more impactful if revealed later in the visit, as in the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. The main tank itself is beautiful, featuring a smaller whale shark, several rays, and a variety of other fish. Beyond that, there are plenty of other exhibits showcasing fish, crustaceans, and jellyfish. The layout can feel a bit like a maze, with elevators connecting the different floors, which adds a sense of exploration. There’s even a dolphin show to enjoy. Overall, it’s a great aquarium and a worthwhile stop when visiting Kagoshima. The location is stunning, right by the sea with a view of the volcano in the background. Compared to the Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa, Kagoshima’s feels a bit expensive since the ticket prices are similar but Okinawa offers much more, especially its enormous main tank (about five times larger). Still, Kagoshima’s aquarium has its own unique atmosphere and likely fewer visitors, which makes for a more relaxed experience.
Nik — Google review
Entrance more expensive compared to regular museums. We caught the shark feeding time. The fish and ocean creatures are beautiful to watch. When you enter , check the time of each performance on the flyer so that you can attend.
SVC — Google review
Loved this aquarium. Great displays and habitats. The whale shark was the main draw for me. They waste no time in showing you that as it is the first thing you see. Awesome. Dolphins outside breaching the water and mesmerizing jelly fish tanks. Put this on yoir to do list in Kagoshima.
Scott B — Google review
I visited Kagoshima City Aquarium, and it was truly a fantastic place. I saw many kinds of fish and even dolphins. From the 4th floor, there was a beautiful view of the active volcano, Sakurajima. I highly recommend visiting-it’s definitely worth enjoying!
Pradeep D — Google review
Aquarium was great, however only one small and relatively slow lift provides access to all floors for strollers and anyone with accessibility requirements.
David J — Google review
So happy we came just in time to watch the dolphin show! I absolutely loved it!! Maybe the aquarium is not that big but it has a nice vibe, and it is immaculately clean so that the glass looks invisible. It was a very pleasant experience. I'd go there again just for dolphins ^^

Nestled at an impressive 373 meters above sea level on the North Peak of Sakurajima, the Yunohira Observation Deck stands as the highest publicly accessible vantage point on this iconic volcano. Visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views that encompass the rugged lava fields, lush wooded slopes of Mount Sakurajima, and the sparkling expanse of Kagoshima Bay. On clear days, you can soak in unobstructed sights stretching across Kinko Bay and Kagoshima City.
Nice closer view of the volcano, observation deck up stairs provide panoramic views. The place is not crowded, but the bus station and the bus are crowded
Guapi G — Google review
A very good observation deck offering beautiful views of the volcano and its surrounding landscape. This spot provides a close look at Mount Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, which has had frequent eruptions throughout history. Today, the volcano remains active, with small eruptions regularly visible from the deck. The site is well maintained, with clear viewpoints and information about the volcano’s history. A must visit for those interested in nature, geology, or simply enjoying a stunning panoramic view. Enjoy 😎
Ryan G — Google review
Another great viewpoint to see Sakurajima - believe this is the closest you can get to it at the moment. If you climb to the second floor of the building, there is a huge photo of the crater on the floor. There is a small carpark at the top if you cannot climb stairs, but most would park at the carpark located below the stairs.
Steven L — Google review
Best spot on the island to see Sakurajima. The volcano was extremely active so we were able to see big plumes. Unfortunately because of rain visibility was limited
Neeka F — Google review
I just wished it was a bit closer to the action. Who hasn’t dreamed of walking through those dramatic clouds of smoke and steam? Still, it’s a beautiful and unforgettable spot, and here’s a sweet surprise: there’s a local cat who actually lives at the observation deck! Visitors are even welcome to feed him, and he’s become a bit of a star among those who stop by.
Jordy S — Google review
The view from the Yunohira observation point (bus stop 11 on the loop bus) is great! The tower has information in English and Japanese about the volcano’s history. There are toilets, and a gift shop. I recommend the local craft chuhai. On busy days, you may want to line up early for the next bus, though it’s only a 15-minute ride from there back to the Port.
Sarah H — Google review
Closest observatory point you can get to observe Sakurajima active volcano. Take a walk through the barren beauty of the lava areas to experience and imagine the intensity and power of past volcanic eruptions. Despite all these past, more than 5000 people are living at the foot of Sakurajima Mount as the volcanic areas are extremely rich soil which grows the best white radish (turnips) & fruits in Japan. Wonder why is it named as Sakurajimi? From its appearance like a cherry tree in bloom, when from a volcanic eruption, hot rock rains down onto the slopes, lighting up the island volcano. Location is about 4 km from central Kagoshima City and a 15-minute ferry ride from the downtown area.

Jambo Mochi Shop offers a local delicacy called Jambo mochi, which are rice cakes skewered on sticks and coated with sweet soy, miso, or kokuto caramel sauce. The shop's name originates from a mispronunciation of the Chinese word for 'two.' Customers can enjoy the mochi with three different sauces: soy sauce, soybean paste, and soybean powder with black sugar.
Dango was very delicious. There were a total of three sauces: 1 soy sauce, 2 soybean paste, 3 soybean powder and black sugar. The harmony with the rice cake was good. I also enjoyed the hot green tea. Eating inside a traditional Japanese-style building made it even more special. I recommend it.

Normally, you have to pay an additional fee (550 yen per person) for a window seat, but they kindly let me sit there because there was a seat available. Every dish was delicious and the names of each dish were so stylish that unfortunately I can't remember most of them😅 I especially liked the second dish, the pumpkin soup‼︎To be honest, I wanted to have a second serving. I want to convey how impressed I was, but I'm not sure I can express how wonderful it was with my limited vocabulary😭 Not only was the food delicious, but the staff were very attentive and I had a wonderful time✨ It's no wonder there were so many customers even on weekdays. Kurokatsutei Kurobe Tenmonkan

Tonkatsu restaurant
Kurokatsutei is a popular spot known for its delicious fried black pork Tonkatsu made from carefully selected Satsuma black pork cutlets. The pork is aged slowly to enhance its sweetness and then fried with specially chosen bread crumbs, resulting in a delectable dish. In addition to the signature Tonkatsu, the menu also features options such as Momo katsu set, which consists of thinly sliced meat, and a classic Pork loin cutlet set.
We arrived in Kagoshima late in the evening and, naturally, went hunting for a place to try the city’s famed pork. Kurokatsutei in Tenmonkan was our pick for dinner — and it absolutely hit the spot. Despite the hour, we were seated pretty quickly. The place had a relaxed, homely feel, perfect for winding down after a long day. We went straight for the signature tonkatsu — and it didn’t disappoint. The pork cutlet was fried to crispy perfection with a light breadcrumb coating, while the meat inside was juicy and full of flavor. The tangy tonkatsu sauce paired so well with the richness of the pork — it really lifted the whole dish. We also ordered the grilled meat skewers, and those were a pleasant surprise. Charred just right and seasoned to bring out the natural sweetness of the pork, they added a nice contrast to the fried dishes. If you’re in Kagoshima and craving pork done right — both fried and grilled — this place is definitely worth a stop.
Crumpled N — Google review
We visited this restaurant around 7-8 PM and were seated immediately without any wait. We ordered a fried meat platter and a pork skewer platter, which turned out to be excellent choices. The fried shrimp was particularly delicious, standing out as a highlight of the meal. The pork cutlet was impressively juicy and flavorful. From the skewer platter, the pork meat skewers were aromatic and tasty, while the pork intestine skewers were also a delightful surprise. The only item that didn't quite meet our preferences was the pork liver skewer. We found the liver slices a bit too thick for our liking. Overall, it was a satisfying dining experience with a variety of well-prepared meat dishes. The restaurant offered a pleasant atmosphere with no waiting time during the evening hours. It's a great spot for meat lovers looking for a diverse selection of fried and grilled options.

Very big size lunch set. 2 adults 2 kids, recommended 3 set lunch menu. Tastes very good and not pricy at all. Only cost 7000 yen

I went there alone in late July around 6pm. The staff sat me down right away and were really friendly, even though I barely speak Japanese. It wasn't a problem though. I just pointed at what I wanted on the menu. I got a set with two black pork cutlets that came out super fast. The outside was really crispy but the pork inside was so tender. It wasn't greasy at all and didn't have that gross oily taste you sometimes get. It was especially good with just salt. You could really taste how different this pork was from regular pork. The sesame grinding thing was pretty fun too, and it goes really well with the pork. The pork roll was incredible. It was tender and a little sweet, and you could really taste the natural pork flavor.

must visit place for their kurobuta meat! Kagoshima is well-known for their Kurobuta and I had to try it. I came across this place via online search and decided to make reservation. I went for lunch on weekdays at 11:30am and there was no queue, however when I left (around 1230pm) there were people waiting for tables. It is within a walkable distance from Tenmonkan area. I ordered the Kurokatsu-Tei set, which comes rice, cabbages, and soup. During lunch, rice and cabbage is refillable. If you would like more soup, there will be a small extra charge. I also recommend you to try their minced kurobuta fried. You must eat it while it’s hot. The meat is crispy outside yet very juicy inside. Overall, I had a great meal!

Ordered the loin cutlet set meal (黒豚ロースカツ定食). There was a lot of variety and sides. The pork cutlet was really delicious and the tonjiru also tasted really good. The service was also pretty fast. It took about 10 mins for 5 teishokus to come out.

To simply put it, we love pork, this place can’t be missed if you are in Kagoshima, staff were friendly, we had the deep fried version, the teppanyaki version and shabu shabu version. Honestly one of the best pork places we ever been to, can’t be happier

similar to Kurobuta, this lunch set is a good deal? And the rice so yummy, I enjoy it so much I ask for another bowl of rice. The combination set is yummy and they provide 5 different sauces to pair with. I enjoy it very much and so filling

Japanese regional restaurant
Kumasotei is a popular Japanese restaurant known for its traditional and locally focused cuisine, particularly its specialty in shabu-shabu dishes. The unassuming eatery offers a welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff and English-translated menus. Guests can enjoy authentic Japanese dishes such as kurobuta shabu-shabu, tonkotsu, Satsuma-age, and various seafood items.
Definitely book ahead at this place as they don't take walk-ins, but the reservation process is a breeze. Caught in the rain and running late, I was relieved they accommodated my last-minute rescheduling. The meal? Absolutely no regrets. Opted for the lunch set - grilled beef, kibihago sashimi, and satsuma-age - and each dish was a knockout. It was all so delicious, I devoured it before I even thought to snap a picture of the whole display! Had my eye on the famed black pig pork, but after a pork-heavy week, I leaned towards beef, which didn't disappoint. Still, the black pig shabushabu is on my list for next time! And the cherry on top? A complimentary beer, a delightful surprise I only noticed when it wasn't on the bill. A huge thank you to the staff for that! This place is a must-visit in Kagoshima, earning a solid 5 stars from me. Can't wait for my next visit to dive into more of their culinary delights!

Great food with reasonably priced set meals. Do expect a more-than-usual number of tourists since the restaurant is featured in many guides. I had the black-pork tonkatsu which was very tasty - crispy on the outside but succulent within.

Ordered two different sets to share, one main with shabushabu pork and one with steak cooked on a hot iron pan. (Forgot to take photo). Besides eating the food we were also eating the culture and history and pride of the locals. Ate sakezushi the first time, really interesting.

slightly overrated in my opinion. the pork shabu shabu...., it's as good as the porks that i could buy from donki. love the stew pork and satsuma beef steak although a tab costly.

Good Japanese fine dining experience As they specially assigned a waiter (Phil) who know English well. He help to explain everything we ordering. Very service oriented but the food a bit on the steep side and not that interesting .

Decent local Satsuma meal set with food in small dishes. My husband and I ordered a 5000 yen set that includes black pork shabushabu (japanese hot pot) and a 3000 yen set. It was plenty for two and they were delicious! I especially liked the broiled pork - it melted in your mouth; and the SatsumaAge ( Satsuma fried fish cakes). All other small dishes were very good. The pictures are only a part of the meal.

Chiran Peace Museum is a solemn tribute to the brave army pilots who lost their lives in WWII. Located in a serene woodland area, the museum displays personal artifacts and planes, offering a poignant insight into the sacrifices made during the war. The museum stands as a powerful reminder of the futility of war, particularly focusing on the tokko pilots who departed from Chiran air base for their ultimate sacrifice.
It is a place where you can feel the history of Japan. There are exhibits of their achievements and their wills, etc. that make us acutely aware of their feelings for their loved ones. Thanks to them, Okinawa and Japan exist today. When I saw the video about them, I could not stop crying. I think it is important for Japanese people to learn from them so that we will never repeat the same mistakes again. It is also most important to pass on such feelings to the new generation.
G.Mtajhw — Google review
The museum is dedicated to the kamikaze. Most information is only in Japanese. There are a few videos / slideshows. You can’t take pictures in the main section of the museum but you can take pictures of one airplane and the airplanes outside. The grounds and park nearby were beautiful during cherry blossom season.
Travelbuff — Google review
A really informative museum, well maintained and with many items on display - from many personal items of the pilots, personal journals and uniforms, to three Japanese WW2 airplanes (2 well maintained, 1 wreck) History and aviation/WW2 enthusiasts will find it very pleasing to visit. The tablet containing the interactive museum map is quite cumbersome and the map interface a bit tricky, but the English audio-guide itself is great and very informative. Many of the exhibits, however, have only Japanese explanations written next to them, so I would recommend having your google translate/lens app at the ready. To me personally, the museum's content was quite moving.
ניב א — Google review
A humanising perspective of the kamikaze pilots of WWII. While they were willing to take drastic measures to die for their country, they were at the very core just soldiers and patriots who wanted to be loyal to their nation. And to their family and friends, they were ordinary men who had lives outside of the army before the war. A sobering reminder that in war there are no winners, and that while Japan (as a political and military force) was the aggressor, ordinary people ended up paying the price they need not have.
Jonathan C — Google review
The Chiran Peace Museum is a real tearjerker. The place really hits home on the tragedies of war, especially with the stories of young kamikaze pilots, some just 17, who never came back. The main exhibits showcase their last letters—it's so moving. If you're an English speaker, grab the audio tour guide for just 200 yen; it really helps explain the letters and the backstories. Heads up, photos are only allowed in two marked spots inside. Getting there is a bit of a trek since it's pretty remote. There's a bus from Kagoshima station, but it takes around 90 minutes and doesn't run too often.
Piyush S — Google review
Visiting the Chiran Peace Museum was a deeply moving experience—one that left a lasting impression on our family. Nestled near the historic town of Chiran in Kagoshima, this museum commemorates the lives of young kamikaze pilots who departed from this very region during World War II. 🏛️ Powerful Exhibits & Personal Stories The museum is a quiet, respectful space filled with photographs, letters, personal belongings, and thoughtfully curated exhibits. One display that touched us deeply featured farewell letters written by pilots—often filled with heartfelt words to their loved ones and reflections on duty. It’s hard not to feel moved reading their personal messages, imagining their hopes and fears. ⚓ Historical Context & Reflection Beyond individual stories, the museum provides rich context on the military strategy behind the kamikaze missions and Chiran’s role as a departure base. The black-and-white photographs gave us a vivid sense of the local landscape back then—complemented by historical footage that brought the era to life. 🌿 Serene Garden & Memorial Area Stepping outside to the memorial garden brought another layer of reflection. The peaceful garden, lined with stone monuments engraved with pilots’ names, offered a tranquil place for reflection. We lingered here, contemplating the human cost of war—finding solace in the gentle ambiance and distant ocean breeze. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Moving Family Experience Although some parts of the museum are solemn—especially the personal stories—our kids, aged 10 and 13, absorbed the atmosphere with thoughtful questions and quiet respect. It sparked meaningful conversations about history, sacrifice, and the importance of peace. ✨ Overall Impressions The Chiran Peace Museum isn’t just a historical site—it’s a moving tribute that feels deeply personal and respectful. We spent a heartfelt 90 minutes inside, and another half-hour walking the garden and savouring the quiet. It’s not easy to visit, but it’s profoundly worth it for anyone seeking understanding, reflection, and a reminder of the past’s human impact. Highly recommended for those visiting Kagoshima who want a meaningful, reflective pause on their journey.

Hirakawa Zoo, located in Kyushu, is a delightful destination for animal lovers and families. The zoo boasts a diverse range of animals, including koalas - a rare sight in the region. Visitors can observe over 1,000 animals from 138 species within naturalistic habitats designed to prioritize their well-being. Situated on the outskirts of Kagoshima, the zoo offers an enjoyable experience with amusement park rides, playgrounds, and a gift shop.
Inexpensive, entrance ticket was only ¥500 per adult! Able to see sakurajima on a non-cloudy day. We walked the full 3km route and took around 3hours to admire the animals. The petting area (guinea pigs, rabbits and goats) was fun. Highly recommended. Many locals enjoying the zoo with their family members and few tourists.

Nice place of recreation, either for young couples or for families with kids. You have to walk a few kilometers through the zoological garden, which makes you a good exercise. It's educational, as you may learn about many rare animals such as Koalas, Urautan, Penguins etc. It's relaxing as you quit from daily mundane human world and meet the nature of animal world.

The weather was very nice. It was rainy in July but just we just have one nice weather day, and we decided to go to the zoo. The zoo is huge, at the hill side, so you should expect walking up and down slopes. Old people and children may be a bit tired visiting there. But it worths a lot. The zoo contains various kinds of animals with spacious living environment, and kept in very good condition. I expect everyone could enjoy very good time there. I forgot the entrance fee but it is very cheap. Souvenirs are cute and we bought a bit. Sadly it also means the zoo may not be earning money, and some parts of it are not in good condition, etc. the polar bear's pool is dry out. I hope I could donate some money to make animals living in a even better place. Please visit and make them earn :)

A bit further away and secluded but still very reachable on foot within 20 min. It’s a nice Zoo which is bigger than expected. When you want to take your time and see everything you definitely need at least 3 hours. There is a cafe/restaurant which serve very affordable and delicious food and the lady that was serving it was very kind! Overall it’s a nice zoo with lots of different animals. What made me somewhat sad was seeing the Crane enclosures which were too small overall and left no room for the birds to fly and had basically nothing but a little water pool. The enclosure for the lion seemed also very small and not well suited for lions overall. This is not the case for all the animals but something to point out.

Teacups and towels were available at the entrance, and customers were able to take them to their seats themselves. The thick-sliced meat melted in their mouths, leaving a lingering aftertaste of umami and sweetness that left them completely satisfied. Other dishes included seasonal Hokkaido sanma nigiri, seared mackerel, and fatty bonito, all of which were excellent. The sardine tempura nigiri was prepared in-house, so it took a while to be served, but it was piping hot and fluffy. I never expected such a beautiful museum there in the middle of the city. It’s close ( 5 mins by bus) to Kagoshima Chuo station; it’s an excellent place to get to know to the history of Meiji era and the contribution of Kagoshima’s Samurai clan. The museum offers a stage show with robotic appearance as samurai. It’s AWESOME ! If you love history, this is your place! My 5 years old also enjoyed this place.

A well-presented museum with varied displays. Almost all in Japanese but several photos etc do have an English caption or summary. The two films very the best to me, cleverly done and multi-lingual earphones allowed us to listen in English. Interesting!

Very well done museum for those interested. Great to learn about this in former Satsuma. The museum is well kept, and the exhibits are informative. There is enough English guidance, and the show even has English audio. Very accessible and foreigner friendly.

Visited in mid-July 2025 Came during a short period where the admission was free of charge. It's not only informative but also interactive experience, showcasing a lot of artifacts (or re-creation thereof) and detailed information as backdrops or contexts of the time in which the Meiji Restoration happened. It amazed me that at one time of the history, Satsuma region had leaders and elites who were the most forward-thinking throughout Japan, particularly Shimazu Nariakira and his peers. At certain times of the day, the museum screens short movies on the Satsuma domain's pivotal role on the Meiji Restoration. During my visit, they screened the one with the first wave of young Satsuma scholars in the 1860s who were sent to the UK to study all matters related to the industrialization and modern, more forward thinking society. The movie was a bit too tacky, jingoistic, and nationalistic, but it was pretty mind-opening once one can get past through such delivery. For history buffs who are visiting or planning to be in Kagoshima, the experience is best paired with other visits to Sengan-en (former proto-industrial zone established by the Satsuma Domain) and Reimeikan (broader, more all-encompassing history and culture of Satsuma).

Ishin Furusato-kan Tucked along the scenic Kotsukigawa riverside, the Ishin Furusato-kan is a fascinating stop for anyone curious about Kagoshima’s history and surprisingly fun for families, too! The museum offers a great balance of immersive exhibits and interactive displays, with some areas especially designed for children to explore and enjoy. Whether it’s hands-on learning or playful zones, younger visitors won’t feel left out. The riverside location adds a lot to the experience. After exploring the museum indoors, you can take a relaxing stroll outside along the beautifully maintained riverside path—perfect for stretching your legs, enjoying the view of Sakurajima, or just soaking up some fresh air. Admission: • Adults: ¥300 • Children: ¥150 • Open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (closed on certain holidays) Getting there: It’s just a 10-minute walk from Kagoshima-Chūō Station, or a short ride on the city tram (get off at Asahidori stop). The museum is very accessible and located right by the river, making it easy to combine with a visit to the nearby historical walking paths. Whether you’re into samurai tales or simply want a peaceful riverside stop with both indoor and outdoor appeal, this spot is definitely worth a visit.

「為了國家/自己理想,你可以去到幾盡?」 : my beloved quote from one HK movie, unexpectedly to refresh this wording during my visit and check out the close relationship between Hong Kong when the first student delegation travelling to UK from 薩摩 province and passed by Hong Kong. This visit is the most valuable part in my trip! Learning the path leading to Meiji revolution is to learn the precious Japanese samurai and global citizens’ sprit (when you got defeated , u need to learn the winner’s strength, not only complain and blame yourselves!) It is not to enhance the hate and conflict after the war. Highly recommend to see its animations about the hero and how they sent the young samurai to UK when Japan was under the risk. There are English/ Mandarin audio provided, please ask the staffs as necessary.

The shows are must-watch! Good to begin with them as it shares details of meiji restoration and industrialisation in English, Korean and Mandarin. Definitely worth the visit and a place to start to understand the history and city better.

Dessert restaurant
Cafe
Tenmonkan Mujaki main shop is a popular ice cream restaurant in Japan, known for its variety of shaved ice desserts in different flavors. Located in the heart of Tenmonkan shopping district, it's a perfect spot to relax after exploring Kagoshima's attractions. The desserts are served in glass dishes with a mix of fruits and sweetened condensed milk, making them both visually appealing and delicious.
The originate store of ShiroKuma shaving-ice-cream in convenient stores. The milky shaved ice is perfectly sweet. The matcha and sweet bean paste is also very good and well balanced. I recommend baby size for each person and share them among your group if you want to taste different flavors.
Subphanida K — Google review
Great service here, although the place looks a little run down. It must be because it's very popular! They have two floors and there's an elevator that can be used. The 'bear' ice slush is refreshing, and I hear it's very popular during the summer. However, although they have many choices, the depth of flavor difference between each shaved ice variation may be indistinguishable except the for different toppings. Quite affordable too. Good place to take kids.
Abe S — Google review
It's got that family restaurant look and vibe, ala doutor, or seizeria, or komeda coffee. I went alone, and got the baby size chocolate, which was still way too much for one person, though I saw many people eating the regular on their own so maybe I'm wrong. Great flavor honestly, and sweet throughout, which feels uncommon for kaki gori / bing su / shaved ice. Still kind of carnival food though haha.
Benjie G — Google review
Yes, this may not have the wow factor of bingsoo or ice kachang but this is a different type of Japanese shaved ice. I can see that the place is frequented by Japanese and definitely taste the nostalgia. Service is prompt and courteous.
Hwon — Google review
The shop is interesting and decorative. There are multiple bear decorations around the restaurant. The kids will love it! They also seemed to have baby chair. If you go to the second floor, you can to see the passerby from the window while enjoying your dessert. The restaurant is an old fashioned classy setting. Good for families or friends. You can get Shirokuma, parfait and other western food here. The portion for the baby shirokuma was just nice for me. The price range is just right.
Juin S — Google review
Good place to try the original shiro kuma (polar bear) shaved ice. The sizes are pretty big so beware. The photos are baby size portions. Seems that the condensed milk is mixed into the ice before shaving so the taste goes right the way through. That is better than other shops where they just used shaved ice and put the condensed milk on top so after a few bites you are just eating flavourless ice. The katsu sando was pretty good, as you can see in the picture it is a proper piece of meat with fat and flavour in it. The toasted bread was a good match. Decent food, but nothing special. Something to check off the list and say we have been there I guess.
Matt W — Google review
If you live in Singapore or Malaysia, you will NOT be impressed. Ice kacang and shaved ice there are better. mujaki is ice with milk and fruit cocktail. And what is up with the PRUNES?! Yuck! Just nothing but sugar or sweeteners. The shop must make tremendous profit. The ingredients used are very baisc. And little. But sells for around 1,000 yen.
LLY — Google review
The food and shaved-ice were delicious, but the customer service left much to be desired!!! This popular Kagoshima dessert shop had a long queue of eager customers. When I arrived around 2 PM, a first-floor staff member informed me that I could go to the second floor if I wanted to order the rice set with shaved ice, while those not ordering the rice set had to wait in the long first-floor queue. I agreed to go to the second floor, where I waited only a few lines. Once seated, I promptly chose my menu items and pressed the order button. However, despite several presses and attempts to get the attention of the staff, no one came to take my order. Many staff members were serving nearby tables, and although they seemed to notice my calls, they ignored them. I pressed the button a total of five times, and still, no one responded. Oddly, the staff treated student groups at other tables with great courtesy, even though those students didn't need to order the rice set. This left me wondering why I was treated differently. I waited for 15 minutes just to place an order that I could have easily done by approaching a staff member myself. While the food tasted good, the staff's service was extremely disappointing. I couldn't help but question if it was worth the visit, especially considering the inconsistent guidance from the first-floor staff regarding going directly to the second floor for rice orders. And by the way, I also got the wrong order initially, but thankfully, they fixed it pretty quickly.

Maruya Gardens is a chic and elaborate shopping complex located in Tenmonkan, Kagoshima. It offers an array of stylish shops for fashion and lifestyle goods, along with a bookstore that includes English language books and periodicals. The mall also features various dining options and a rooftop garden where visitors can relax and enjoy the surroundings. Additionally, Maruya Gardens stands out for housing the only grocery store in the city with unique product selections.
This is the best shopping location in Kagoshima. It is not very big, but what it has is amazing. You can find all sorts of little shops inside, as well as a few big chains. The Starbucks here is great, as well as the huge bookstore on the sixth floor. You can even find some English books here. Maruya Gardens is super accessible, with tons of buses, two streetcar lines, and taxis. It also boasts two huge parking garages, so you don't have to worry about where to leave the car.

Visited in July 2025 One of the more upscale malls in Kagoshima. The supermarket in the basement is pretty nice and well-stocked, although a bit lacking on exotic local cuisines. Perhaps one of the more unique local items here is eel onigiri, which itself is pretty tasty. The seafood dishes and sushi are also fresh as well. There are also a bakery and souvenir shop next to the supermarket. If I'm not mistaken there is also a rooftop cafe or bar, but I didn't check this out.

Terukuni Shrine is a 19th-century Shinto shrine located in Kagoshima. It is known for its distinctive feature, a tree that has been pruned into the shape of a flying bird. The shrine's giant white torii makes it easily recognizable. Despite being relatively young compared to other temples, having been founded in 1864, the shrine has faced damage from historical events such as the Satsuma Rebellion and World War II air raids.

Shabu-shabu restaurant
Ichiniisan, located in AMU Plaza Kagoshima, is renowned for its Black Pork Shabu Shabu, a Japanese hot-pot dish where thin slices of meat are quickly cooked in hot broth. The restaurant offers good service and the staff is exceptional. Visitors can expect a wait but can explore the plaza while waiting thanks to their efficient number system. English menus are available and the pork is described as fatty but delicious.
We arrived 1.5 hr before closing time and had a good experience. There were a lot of staff and the ones who served us were friendly. My husband and I shared the shabu shabu black pork set and added another plate of pork meat since we weren’t very hungry. It was delicious and satisfying. The set came with a small piece of pork katsu which was also very tender and juicy.
DTM — Google review
The food was very good! I know this location is famous for its shabu shabu but I went with the black pork cutlet course simply to try the variety of dishes with it. I was very pleased with the taste and the amount was perfect for me, but I typically eat smaller portions than others. I can’t say much about the atmosphere as I was seated at the counter to the right of the entrance. So I didn’t get to see the interior of the restaurant. The counter area itself was quite nice and the chef is right on the opposite side preparing the dishes. There were only a few people at the counter so it was a quiet, relaxing meal. My only issue was the service. There wasn’t a line when I arrived but I had to wait a few minutes for the staff working the register to help me because the other servers seemed to be ignoring me, even after the clerk called out for someone to seat me. Once seated, they did provide me with a QR code to the online English menu but no server came to take my order. The chef called for an assistant to take my order but he seemed very uneasy to take my order in English. So I ordered with the Japanese menu because it would have been awkward trying to use the English menu on my smartphone considering the distance to the assistant on the opposite side of the counter. I didn’t even receive a glass of water, but maybe this place doesn’t provide it without an explicit request. Various servers brought out portions of the course. The older woman was very kind but the younger staff seemed very cold, aside from the girl at the register when I paid my bill. I may have just come at a bad time. The staff did seem flustered when I arrived so maybe there was some incident just before I arrived. I don’t know the reason behind the attitude but it made me feel unwelcome. In any case, the food was delicious and that’s the most important part of a meal. Perhaps I caught them on an off day, but it left me feeling that it may be difficult for foreigners with no Japanese ability to eat there.

Wanted to eat black pork shabu shabu so we googled and this came up. We went at about 4.30pm so there wasn’t that many people. Staffs were friendly even though they couldn’t speak english. We weren’t exactly sure how to eat it correctly so we asked the staffs who explained it to us using body language. The meat was really soft and tender, soba soup was delicious (but salty), yuzu was great as well. Sushi bowl is just rice with mushrooms, shredded eggs. Shabu plates are all pre made as you can see in the fridge which had the rotating shelves. This place seemed popular as they had a ticket machine for lining up and there were a few groups of customers waiting when we left. Dessert was really sweet, in fact too sweet that we couldn’t eat it after the first bite. Overall a great experience.

Ordered a pork sukiyaki. The pork is a bit standard. The first entree of the wagu and fried pork chop are a bit surprising. Other dishes are a bit normal. They served the dishes quite fast.

Your waiter served me broken egg yolk with a piece of egg shell. I can crack a perfect raw egg since I was 10! Your udon noodles were over cooked and too soft that could not be picked up with chopsticks. I can make it better with a frozen noodle pack from a 7-eleven. Wife and I sat at the table for 15 min after finished eating and no one came to us. We thought the meal was done and we walked to the cashier. At the cashier we waited for 3 minutes and finally a lady showed up and wondered why we did not have the ordering check at the table. She went back to the table and trying to find the check but after a few moments she realized we have not received our desserts yet. We are not foreigners because my wife grew up in Tokyo with fluent Japanese language. It was at 920pm Sunday night, and there were only 6 customers including my wife and I in the restaurant. I think your staffs played too much and forgot about us. I am showing the receipt here to tell you we are good customers. It costed ¥10000 yen for two people’s dinner, and I want to say your staffs need to be more serious while at work!!
Joseph L — Google review
Great place to try the famed Kagoshima pork. Went there and got a number to wait, there were 20 people in front of us but only about a 30-40 minute wait in total. Great they have a system where you don't have to stand in line and can have a browse around the plaza whilst you wait. They had an English menu, and pork was fatty. The set menu was substantial and we also got an extra tonkatsu, probably unnecessary but we wanted to try it. We loved the fish cake, and the only call out for us is that we'd love more sauce or a soup base with the shabu shabu (as it appeared to be just water) but that means you got to actually taste the pork.
Juliet Z — Google review
Food was okay but it’s not the place that I would like to visit over and over again, considering the price and the taste. It was not until we asked for the bill that they serve us rice. I guess the waitress has kind of forgot to serve the rice and at that time was not even busy hour.

Shabu-shabu restaurant
Ajimori is a renowned restaurant in Tokyo that specializes in serving up shabu-shabu, a traditional Japanese dish featuring Kagoshima style dark pork cooked in boiling water alongside fresh vegetables. The minimalist dining space creates an intimate atmosphere for enjoying the lunch set menus and hot pot dishes. Guests can savor the experience of cooking their own meal at the table, with slices of meat and vegetables quickly prepared in a pot of boiling water.
This is black pork shabu-shabu, dipped in dashi. The natural sweetness of the black pork is truly astonishing. Even when boiled, it produces almost no scum, and each bite of this beautifully tender pork fills your mouth with happiness. It’s absolutely delicious. This is the kind of restaurant you can’t help but recommend to others!

It's a very busy famous restaurant, so we walked in to make reservation 2 days before we had the lunch. It was impressive the manager still remembered my name when we just arrived at restaurant 2 days later. The pork belly shabu shabu is the best choice in the town. Lady serving our table is very kind and professional. However, only 1 hour was allowed for customer for lunch, it may be a little bit rush for having shabu shabu. Despite that, it was an excellent lunch to taste the black pork at Kagoshima.

The private rooms offer a touch of elegance and exclusivity. A particular dish, featuring pork, was truly outstanding and deserves special recognition. You can enjoy freshly fried tonkatsu. This restaurant is featured in cartoons and magazines, and has a long line of customers.
HIDE H — Google review
Kagoshima is well known for its kurobuta. This restaurant does tonkatsu for lunch and Shabu Shabu for dinner using this special pork. We ordered special kurobuta and lunch special tonkatsu sets. Although the kurobuta was supposed to be far superior for me it was tasty but a little too much fatty bits came with my cut. Also the breading was over cooked a bit. It was burnt in my opinion. So the kurobuta experience was not as good as the ones I had in the past. Actually the lunch special tonkatsu set was only 1000 Yen and it tasted really good. I think I would suggest that ordering the lunch special was delicious enough and very cost effective. The special kurobuta set was 3000 yen and it was underperforming. I wonder how the Shabu Shabu during dinner would be…
Jung L — Google review
Was recommended to Ajimori by a Kagoshima native and this place lives up to expectations. In time for lunch specials and there were many choices. The side dishes were better than most places. The offerings were different and each dish was distinctly delicious. The main course was of course the kurobuta, which we had as tonkatsu and ginger-fried. The tonkatsu was excellent. Crispy, crunchy exterior with moist juicy pork. The ginger-fried pork was also well-prepared and complemented the finely shredded slaw and rice. Excellent service. Excellent meal at a good price. Would come back to try other items and the dinner menu.

Aview Cafe & Flowers is a charming spot that offers more than just a meal. Nestled on a hill, it provides panoramic views of Sakurajima, making it a popular destination for visitors. The cafe serves up hearty salads, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, curry and cakes alongside beautiful bouquets of flowers. The fresh ingredients in the food complement the fragrant seasonal blooms from the florist. Guests can enjoy various lunch options with generous portions and an abundance of fresh vegetables.

The interior of the store has a calm and stylish atmosphere, and although it is small, the space is spacious. Although the place was full, I had a stress-free time waiting for my food 😊 The staff were efficient and had a pleasant customer service ✨ The menu includes rice and curry, and I ordered the Aview Burger Plate and Custard Pudding Parfait🍔🍮 🍔 Aview Burger Plate The hamburgers and buns are both very delicious. The taste is refreshing yet satisfying! The great thing about it is that you can enjoy it in a healthy way with plenty of salads🥗✨ 🍮 Custard pudding parfait Amazing quality...! 😳This elegant and elaborate taste for just 1000 yen! ? There was plenty of custard pudding under the ice cream, and crushed tuile underneath it✨The combination of crispy texture and rich pudding was the best, and it was a parfait that made you feel happy until the end💓 Overall, the price is commensurate with the quality, and I have no complaints 🙆‍♀️In fact, it's a reasonable price for the taste and satisfaction. It was such a wonderful experience that 5 stars is not enough👍I would definitely like to visit again! (Translated by Google) I visited in May 2025. I hadn't had curry 🍛 here yet, so I ordered "Green Curry" and "Cassata" as they had just started serving them, and "Fragrant Garden" with "Cassata" and iced tea. It's hard to find "Green Curry" in Kagoshima, so I chose "Green Curry" without hesitation 😄 The first salad 🥗 that arrived was full of vegetables 💕 It's nice to be able to eat a lot of vegetables 😊 "Green Curry" From the beginning, the sharp spiciness of the green chili peppers hits you, and then the flavor, sweetness, and aroma of spices of the coconut milk are clearly noticeable from the first bite ❤️ The quality is on par with a curry specialty restaurant ❗️ The main ingredient is a large pumpkin 🎃 It's very filling, and it's mainly vegetables, so it's good for your body. I also like that they serve lemon on top of the rice. The refreshing taste change from squeezing lemon juice into the rice is also nice👍 I wonder if sweets taste even sweeter after eating something really spicy😄 "Cassata" It arrives rock hard at first. The bright red color on a white background looks delicious🤤 When you put it in your mouth, the accents of nuts and berries are effective, and it's super delicious😋 The texture changes even more when it's half-frozen, but it was so delicious that I couldn't resist and ate it without waiting for it to be half-frozen😂 The "Fragrant Garden" iced tea that came with it. It's colorful and very beautiful😍 It smells so good from ice cream, so I wonder if it smells even better when it's hot☺️ Everything was absolutely delicious❣️ (Original)

(Translated by Google) This was my first visit since the relocation. It feels smaller than the Ujuku location because the flower shop is now separate, but it's still as stylish as ever. All the staff were very friendly and it was a comfortable atmosphere. The food looked stylish, too. I learned that cucumbers can look stylish when displayed in this way. The sandwich menu also offers a la carte options for children, and the staff are very friendly, so it's easy to come here with children. After the meal, I ordered the sweets set which included two cakes, ice cream, and a drink, but I was so full that I regretted ordering the set. However, the pumpkin pudding was easy to eat and very delicious. There aren't many stylish cafes where you can relax with children, so this place will definitely come in handy in the future. The staff was very attentive, explaining the menu, showing us the miscellaneous goods sold in the store, and the flowers in front of the store. I ordered Set A for lunch, and it comes with rice on a plate with salad and main dish. I also had soup as an extra, so it was quite filling and I was satisfied not only with the quantity but also with the taste. This cafe is small, but the food is always great! We got a couple pasta dishes for lunch. The coffee is really good, and the specialty drinks are awesome. I suggest trying the bottles of soda for sale in the cooler by the register. The grape soda is all natural and has real grapes in it.

Large but nothing to see or shop. A big mall with a few restaurants, a big Daiso, a cinema, a small ABC Mart, a parchinko, a few other shops and that's it. You'd wonder why, as a tourist, you should spend time and money travelling here. The name Jungle Park is very much misleading and within minutes after getting off the taxi you'd regret and hop on any taxi to go away. No photo was taken cos nothing worth keeping in the camera.

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Restaurant
Mawaru Sushi Mekkemon Dolphin Port is a sushi restaurant located in Kagoshima, near the ferry terminal and the Dolphin Port shopping center. The restaurant offers fast service, a friendly atmosphere, and a variety of fresh seafood dishes. Customers can choose from the menu or pick cold dishes from the conveyor belt, with sushi plates ranging in price. Popular dishes include seared salmon with mayonnaise, tuna chunks, sweet prawns, scallops, and eel.
The restaurant opens at 17.00. We arrived here at 16:47 on Friday, soon started queue up. Luckily, we were the first one to get in. Unforgettable experience! Friendly service, fresh ingredients, with impressive mountain view. Worth trying!

Don't let the wait time deter you—this sushi restaurant is nice! Even arriving early on a weekday evening (around 5:30 PM), I experienced a significant two-hour wait. While the limited waiting area seating was a bit of a challenge, and I observed many locals opting to wait in their cars, the eventual reward was worth it. The staff's kindness, especially towards foreigners, was truly exceptional. Their patience and attentiveness made the long wait more bearable. Once seated, both the chefs and waitresses were incredibly welcoming, consistently checking on my preferences and ensuring a delightful dining experience. And the sushi? fantastic! The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were simply outstanding. The quality of the ingredients and the chef's skill. But some in menu is so-so. Despite the extended wait, the overall experience I love is superb service, coupled with the delectable sushi. Just be sure to plan your visit accordingly and be prepared for a potential wait.

Everything was amazing. The food, service, the staff were hands down unmatched. I stumbled across this place because I was searching for something else. I walked in and was immediately ushered to the counter since I was alone. I grabbed sushi as it went around and asked for wasabi from the chefs. The soup was delicious, the variety of sushi was outstanding. I’ll definitely be back next year.

This "conveyer belt" chain could easily do without the conveyer belt. I was surprised by the quality and selection of seasonal fish that they offer. The cooked and fried items are delicious as well. I easily spent more than I normally would have because of the overall quality and variety of interesting dishes that they offered. They even fry your filleted fish bones and shrimp heads for you to enjoy Overall it was a great experience and one I would happily pay for again.

This review is based on Sunday May 11, 2025 Mother’s Day here in Japan and it was crazy. About an hour and 10 minute wait but very orderly. The sushi was all made fresh and excellent quality, price is very reasonable about a half with you’d pay in the US for the same sushi and not near the flavor. Check out some of my videos.

We dropped by Mawaru Sushi Mekkemon Dolphin Port during our time in Kagoshima—and it quickly became one of our favorite sushi stops! What made it great: • The sushi was incredibly fresh with a wide variety, from seared salmon and tuna to sweet shrimp and scallops. Everything was flavorful and well-prepared. • The two-tier conveyor system was fun and efficient—sushi ran on the top belt, and sauces and cups on the lower belt. • The place was lively and welcoming, with cheerful greetings from the staff and a buzzing vibe that added to the experience. • The prices were very reasonable considering the quality. It felt like having top-tier sushi without the hefty price tag. We also noticed that it’s popular with both locals and tourists. Expect a bit of a wait during dinner time, but it’s well worth it. Pro tip: Go early around opening hours to beat the crowd. The heart-shaped tamagoyaki and seared mayo salmon were standout dishes. Don’t forget to try both the sweet and salty soy sauces too. If you’re visiting Kagoshima and looking for a fun and tasty sushi experience, Mekkemon at Dolphin Port is a must.

History Museums
Reimeikan - Kagoshima History Museum and Fine Arts Center is a museum located behind Kagoshima City Hall inside Tsurumaru-jo, an ancient Japanese castle. Established in 1983, it showcases exhibitions on the area's local history, cultural heritage, and ancient sword-making. The museum aims to deepen citizens' understanding of local history and promote cultural activities and academic research.
What an excellent surprise visiting this place was. The building itself seems austere and this trend continues inside. However the actual museum contents are so detailed and beautifully presented that it far exceeded my initial expectations. I cannot recommend it highly enough for the presentation of the historical significance of the region and for the very welcoming and helpful staff. The cafe at the museum is also lovely, with a pleasant view of the courtyard and plenty of light. Staff there too are excellent and there are a small number of well-curated pieces on sale which you can peruse while you wait for your tea and cake. And do have the cakes, they are delicious.
B N — Google review
Visited in mid-July 2025 The largest museum of Kagoshima, built on the former ground of the Tsurumaru Castle. Compared to thematic museums in the city such as the Ishin Furusato (Meiji Restoration) and Shuseikan (Sengan-en), it is more all-encompassing. Although of course there is more emphasis on the period just prior and during the Meiji Restoration, other eras are also well-represented - this includes the geological history and the advent of neolithic civilization in the Kinko Bay area. Another notable point is that the exposition on the Meiji Restoration is presented more carefully, objectively (although to some may feel a bit dry), and more or less free of jingoism compared to that in the Ishin Furusato museum. The second floor section, although smaller, is no less interesting. This section is dedicated to folklores and the very traditional way of life of people inhabiting the Satsuma and Kinko Bay areas. One of the most interesting exhibition is the replica of mock mythical creature that is operated by multiple persons like lion dance, but in this case it is a mix of cow, tiger, and deer.
Lontongstroong — Google review
For overseas visitor, who come by your own car, please be reminded to get the free parking voucher from the staff stationed at the parking space next to the library. Remember to get the chop to verify your entry to the museum in order to activate the voucher. The exhibition is for hard core fans of Japanese modern history, not as many shows as another Muji revolution museum. However, you would get a holistic view of Japanese modern development. The memorial place of 西鄉隆盛 nearby is more compelling to me.
Waha F — Google review
Went to the Ukiyoe exhibition today, it was great but overpriced for a handful of rooms. I didn’t go around the rest of the museum but I plan to go and will update afterwards. Saw a review from a few years back talking about “rebuilding the old castle” and “fake like the rest of them” which I don’t understand as it was his country that destroyed a large number of castles and historic items. Obviously it didn’t happen but the gate was rebuilt a few years ago and looks amazing. A rebuild of the original castle would be great too. No matter how “fake” Americans think it is

This museum was built on the site of Kagoshima Castle, and has held an exhibition by miniature photographer Tatsuya Tanaka since July 25, 2012. The fun of "looking" is irresistible, and is sure to bring a smile to your face after viewing.

This is a great museum. Very informative, signage in English, Korean, Chinese (繁體,简体). Gives a detailed history of the Kyushu Peninsula and Kagoshima including events around the Meiji Restoration. Give the Meiji Restoration museum a miss and come to this one instead.

One of the best history museums I have been to that is dedicated to the story of Kagoshima for the past 5000 years. They have English translations of key signs and artifacts and are on the grounds of an old castle for which the gate and walls still stand. We spent over 2 hours and felt we had to jump over some parts. Full of artifacts and knowledge.
Joshua R — Google review
You can spent more than 1.5 hrs here if you’re interested in Satsuma’s history. You are also allowed to take pictures for quite a lot of stuff. They also have free WiFi. But some parts don’t have any English explanation, and the souvenir shop doesn’t have much variety of goods.

Located at the Sakurajima Port Ferry Terminal, the Sakurajima Visitor Center is a must-visit spot for travelers. The center offers a 'Minato Cafe' where visitors can savor drinks, sweets, and light meals in an open space with ample windows. The cafe's specialty dish features a reddish roux inspired by Sakurajima's magma, made from ripe tomatoes and special soup stock with various spices.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. We spent about half an hour browsing the souvenir shop and the exhibits. There are no tickets needed. There was very comprehensive information about the state of the volcano, how active it has been in the past few years, and both general info about volcanos and how they affect the world around them, and specific information about Sakurajima as a volcano and a home for its people. We found that every time we had a question after reading something (e.g. what is a volcanic earthquake, after reading that they are “still observed under Mt. Fuji even today”), the answer would almost immediately be addressed in the next section (see pic 4). So we thought the exhibition was organised and staged well. Really recommend visiting!
Yl T — Google review
A very nice visitors center that offers a gift shop and explanation of the volcano. Overall, very educational and interesting.
C N — Google review
It is slightly dated, though it has a toilet and a souvenir shop. There is also a food kiosk outside that sells hot food, while you can have a soft serve inside. The exhibits detail how Sakurajima was formed and evolved over the years, and there is an interesting setup showing the constant ongoing eruptions, big or small. They have a video show, but only at certain hours, and recommend using a QR code to view the same video on youtube. There is a large park outside, with quite a large running footbath, which was quite fun to use. You can also view the city of Kagoshima across the harbor as well as the many ferries.
Steven L — Google review
Visited in mid-July 2025 Only in Sakurajima, the visitor center is located not right at the gateway. It is something like 10-15 minutes away on foot. There's also a tourist bus loop (every 30 minutes) that goes in anti-clockwise direction from the ferry port. The building looks a bit dated, which makes sense given it bears the brunt of abrasive fine ash all year around. The most interesting for me is the real-time monitoring information of the volcanic and seismic activity fed from the system throughout the island. The visitor center is manned by a bunch of volunteers who are not only knowledgeable but also passionate on what they are doing. Aside from the extensive exhibits, it also boasts a souvenir collection and some supplies for the visitors, including some unique ones like small statues made of the volcanic ash.
Lontongstroong — Google review
This place is perfect if you want to learn all about Sakurajima's history. They have tons of cool exhibits and displays that make everything super easy to understand. It's a must-visit for anyone wanting the inside scoop on the island. Plus, they have a souvenir shop and even sell ice cream.

The station was quite sizable here and provided souvenirs, food and drink, and washroom before heading further to the next point to view the volcano. Carpark was free but might be full during rush hours. There were some other carparks nearby.

You can find the local made souvenirs, including the clay pot, oil and preserved radish and its seed here. They all come from the farm houses nearby. A convenient gift store for short time travellers. There are rumours stating that the clay pot made of the volcanic soil can ease the strange metallic taste in the tape water. Regret that they are sold out during my visit.

Souvenir shop with a restaurant. The mini kanpachi don was supposedly very popular in the restaurant- was pretty good but nothing special. Mikan soft serve in the souvenir shop itself is worth a try though. It was milky with citrus flavour (Sakurajima Mikan used) and prefer to cool down from a hot day in the sun.

Must see place! You can take a bus or ride a taxi for 2000 yen from the ferry terminal.

Sort of interesting in a desolate way. A shop, a small gallery, and toilets. Good views of the volcano.

This viewpoint was further away from the station. There were fewer visitors. The shelter area was large enough. Taking pictures with the volcano background was very easy. Carpark was free.

Yoshinoya Kagoshima Sumiyoshi Restaurant is a convenient fast food spot with ample parking. It offers affordable and tasty meals, making it a great option for solving breakfast dilemmas in the area. As with all Yoshinoya establishments, this restaurant provides delicious and budget-friendly dining experiences.
This is right up there for this type of fast food restaurant. The staff are terrific, atmosphere high, really clean and the food is fast and tasty. We have been in Japan for weeks and Yoshinoya have been the best...we have tried the one's starting with S and M but they are hugely inconsistent to poor.

Japanese confectionery shop
The Akashiya Kagoshima Main Store is a renowned establishment known for its Japanese sweet, Karukan, which is made with an abundance of Jinenjo, also known as Japanese yam. This long-standing shop holds historical significance as it was favored by Kagoshima's lord Shimazu. The Karukan is celebrated for its rich aroma of yam and a soft, fluffy texture. Visitors can expect an authentic experience and are encouraged to explore the nearby cheese croque shop across the street.
It’s very close to the Amu Plaza Kagoshima and Kagoshima station.

As expected of Akashiya's customer service❣️ Be polite in your language Great behavior too👍 From these places It shows the power of the brand 🙂 It's true that you can't go wrong if you choose "Akashiya" for gift giving☺️ I bought it at the Chuo Station store the other day. (Translated by Google) Akashiya Main Store (Akashiya Confectionery) The first thing that stands out about Akashiya Main Store is its stately exterior as the birthplace of Kagoshima's specialty, karukan, and its polite, well-trained customer service. The interior of the store has a quiet, calm atmosphere, and the tableware and displays have a sense of elegance. This time, I visited this store as the first store on my trip. The store is located right next to Asahidori tram stop, so it is easily accessible. The calm exterior that gives off a sense of history and the sophisticated atmosphere inside the store are attractive. The staff were also polite, and I felt the calmness and attention to detail that you would expect from a long-established store. The signature product, karukan, is characterized by its fluffy dough made from mountain yam and rice flour, and its unique moist and chewy texture is addictive. You can choose between types with and without red bean paste inside, so you can enjoy it according to your preference. The version with red bean paste has a moderate sweetness and an elegant taste. There is also a tea ceremony room inside the store, so you can enjoy freshly made karukan with tea. It is also a great place to stop by and take a break between sightseeing. Akashiya also sells assorted scraps, which are popular as a great value item for the home. Individually wrapped souvenirs are also available, making them perfect as gifts. However, the expiration date is short, so be careful when purchasing. Overall, it is a great Japanese sweets store that has the perfect combination of taste, atmosphere, and service, and is a place you should definitely stop by when you visit Kagoshima. Ramen restaurant

Komurasaki is a popular ramen spot in Kagoshima, Japan. It has garnered a loyal following since its establishment in 2015. Visitors often return to savor the delicious ramen that has kept them as fans over the years. The restaurant continues to maintain its reputation for serving high-quality and satisfying ramen dishes, making it a must-visit for those exploring Kagoshima's culinary scene.
Located inside tenmokan nigiwai st market. Inside is pretty clean. There is only 1 menu with 2 size (reguler or large), but reguler size is full enough for me. You come, order size of the noodle, got token, then choose your seat. Put the token in front of you and then just wait for the chef to serve the noodle. The soup is thick, delicious but a little bit to salty for me. Noodle is thin with 2 diffrent type of meat. 👍🏻
Angelia T — Google review
Delicious soup noodle that's very different from other ramen places. The soup is pork based and very flavorful. It has some ham flavor in it I think. The topping is just thick charsiew curinto 1cm pieces and thinly sliced cabbage. No egg or other customization options. Overall it works rather well, the fact the shop has been around for 70+ years shows it does something right.
Li L — Google review
The broth was too salty for me. Noodles - a bit too soft. I like the simple menu, there's only one item just 2 sizes - regular or Large bowl.

I tried genuine vegan ramen made by a long-established ramen shop in Kagoshima. It is a little spicy and addictive ramen made with Kagoshima vegetables and soy milk as a base, and the mala flavor makes it tingly. The quality of the ramen is simply high, and I can really feel the skill of this long-established ramen shop. My friend who went with me was also excited, saying, "This is the best memory I've had in Kagoshima." If I come to Kagoshima, I'll definitely come back to this shop.
守護彰浩 — Google review
Ramen's thickness resembles more of 寿面, thinner than the conventional ones. Broth is really thick with a strong porky taste. But it's much better after adding plenty of garlic paste and pepper. Serving is rather big for regular serving so have to give some to Hub. No sharing allowed so we have settled for 2 bowls, each at ¥1200.
Eng K — Google review
Chanced upon this authentic Ramen stall while walking around feeling hungry. Stock is the usual saltiness and the ramen is very springy. Cooked just about right. 2 stars given is because half way through my meal, found a short strand of hair. Started to observe the main chef behind the counter and saw that he kept his face and hair few times. While tasting his soup stock, he actually spat the mouthful out onto the floor in full view of his customers twice. Felt bit disgusted after seeing all this. His hygiene standard needs to be improved.

The spicy noodle was really good. So suprised that they don’t use meat and fish cause it has rich taste and so creamy👍I would have to try it again

I have never eaten Kagoshima ramen before but struck gold finding this shop. The master prepares everything in front of you, he dances from area to area, making the perfect bowl of ramen. This ramen has a light pork flavored soup, with a generous serving of slightly cooked cabbage with a generous serving of pork meat. 900yen for this meal and show.

Japanese regional restaurant
Yushokutonsaiichiniisan Kagoshima Honten is a must-visit restaurant in Kagoshima, offering a wide variety of food options. The staff is known for their fantastic service and efforts to accommodate English-speaking customers with an English menu. Visitors praise the delicious silver-strip round herring and black pork shabu shabu, as well as the 3900 yen pork shabu shabu course that includes various dishes.
It was a pleasant lunch set there. I had Fried kurobuta with eggplant set for 1180yen (October 2024). They have special seating at the counter for single customers and also dining room for larger crowd. You can observe the chef prepare sashimi there. You have a cheaper option at lunch. The food was delicious and the service was awesome. I just only wait for 2 minutes before arranged for seating when I came at 1.45pm. The interior of the restaurant was pleasant and zen. The service was great, they were able to cater to me when I requested for the English menu. Would happy to come again! It seems their soba noodle and shabushabu were recommended. You can also enjoy Japanese sake in the shop.
Juin S — Google review
They offered an outstanding black pork shabu shabu lunch set that beautifully highlighted the region’s specialty. The thinly sliced Kagoshima Kurobuta pork was delicately marbled, and when dipped briefly in the light dashi broth, it became tender and flavorful without losing its natural sweetness. The accompanying vegetables such as fresh greens, mushrooms, tofu, and finely shredded carrot, brought balance and variety to each bite. After the shabu shabu, the meal transitioned perfectly with rice served in a fragrant broth topped with pork slices and scallions, creating a comforting ochazuke-style dish. Finally, the course ended on a sweet note with a smooth and bittersweet pudding that paired well with the savory meal😍

What an amazing place!! Came for dinner on a Thursday night around 7pm and wasn't too busy. We had the 3900 yen pork shabu shabu course what included many dishes as well as the shabu shabu... Each dish was great. Honestly super tasty and good quality. For this price you can not complain in fact I am suprised they can continue at that price. Must go if your in the area. They had a teppan yaki and tempura place as well next door which I will definitely come back and try.

Kagoshima Airport, located in the city of Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, serves Southern Kyushu and offers unique amenities such as a hot-spring foot bath and aircraft displays. The airport operates several flights per day to destinations like Amami Airport on Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima Airport on Tokunoshima Island, and Kikai Airport on Kikaijima Island.
Clean, hassle-free, functional and convenient airport. Amazing simplicity.
Don A — Google review
The airport was not a large one, but it also served international flights. Most of the shops and restaurants were in the local flight side, which was connected by a covered walkway. A free open foot hot bathing area decorated with a volcano was its signature. Carpark was always full and needed to spare some time to queue up. Entering the carpark was not constantly guided by staff, and drivers had to follow the sequence themselves. Along the main building, stops were allocated to private cars, buses, etc. But drivers also needed to wait because the stops were busy. The quality of the shops and eateries was fine. Some residents were attracted and spent here. The staff in the information counter could speak fluent English. Tourists should approach them for assistance instead of other staff working here because they might not answer your questions correctly. The custom for international flight was on the upper level. The entrance was usually crowded with a long queue as there was only a small buffering space for checking hand carried luggage before stepping into the restricted area. Only one shop was opened inside. Battery charging was provided free of charge. Toilets were clean and hygiene.

Visited in July 2025, Domestic Arrival only A quite normal and typical Japanese second tier city. Too bad I arrived on the last flight of the day that everything was already closed and had to hurry a bit to catch the bus to the city. One way trip to the downtown (Tenmonkan) costs 1500 yen and takes around 1 hour through an expressway that goes to the west of the city.
Lontongstroong — Google review
It seems this airport is targeting mainly domestic flights, and only very few international flights are using this airport. So the domestic terminal facilities are much better than the small international terminal. There is a free foot spa outside the terminal building, just next to the airport shuttle bus stop.

In terms of typical Japanese airport styles, this is the best airport. Shops and restaurants and nice observation deck with convenience store and dotor coffee.

This airport is primarily domestic, as the demand for international flights isn’t as high as in Tokyo. That said, it’s my favorite airport for several reasons. It’s calm, quiet, and clean—unlike the always-busy Haneda, you can actually hear yourself think here! The bathrooms were clean, though a bit outdated. There are plenty of gift shops, although many of them sell similar items. The staff were friendly and the check-in process was easy and efficient. One unique and special feature of this airport is the feet and hand onsen. It’s such a nice touch to relax before or after your flight! Overall, this is a great airport to fly to—peaceful, comfortable, and with thoughtful amenities.
Emma P — Google review
From Chuo Bus station to Airport, it only took us 1 hour travel. There are a lot of souvenir shops (that looks expensive), but also have a big family mart where we bought some famichiki. There is also a roof deck to see the planes, and beautiful flowers! Opting to fly to Tokyo was a breeze for us, and time saving too!
Czarina — Google review
That’s a good airport in Kagoshima. Not huge but that’s compact and easy to use here. There are good souvenir shops, lounges and convenience store! You can have a time we’ll with relaxing! You should use this airport to connect to islands in Kagoshima. Good place enjoy!

Free parking and free admission to a lovely park overlooking Sakurajima. It's famous for seasonal flowers and was stunning during cherry blossom season. I can understand why so many people were camped out for ohanami parties. Would love to visit during another season. The Shoko Shuseikan Museum is a historical site located near the Sengan-en Garden, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was once Japan's oldest western-style machine factory and now serves as a museum showcasing the country's industrial revolution. The museum is part of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution and offers insights into the history of Japanese industry, including metal production, weapon manufacturing, textile products, and handicrafts.
Awesome display of artefacts, models and documents of the Shimadzu family, their contributions to the modernization of industrial Japan. Also, it shared on the overall transformation of Japan during the Meiji Restoration

Visited in mid-July 2025 Interesting and surprisingly mind-opening little museum, focusing on the history of the Shimazu clan and more specifically their experimentation of industrialization at the tail end of Edo period (mid-1800s). The exposition starts with the background and origin of the clan, which was a breakaway group from Kamakura period that ventured all the way to the southern end of the mainland Japan. Satsuma's location, combined with prior trade and exchange of idea with outside world well prior to the Sakoku (isolation period of Japan), as well as limited interaction with some Western powers like the Dutch, planted a seed for modernization. Only at the time that would be the end of Edo period, the clan, spearheaded by Shimazu Nariakira, spurred the initiative for the industrialization by constructing the proto-industrial complex of Sengan-en, experimenting and producing tinted glass (kiriko, 切子) and various metal products. Some of the re-creation of the products are in display. It never ceases to amaze me that in spite of the information limitation, the ingenuity of engineers and tradesmen of Sengan-en resulted on relatively advanced technologies like mid-1800s artillery pieces. The industrial complex was destroyed multiple times, namely during Anglo-Satsuma war and multiple conflicts between the feudal Satsuma and the Japanese central government. Sadly, after the Seinan War in 1870s, it was curtailed as a form of punishment towards the feudal leaders and its skilled workers dispersed throughout various industrial sites nationwide. One can even say Japan industrialized at the expense of Satsuma domain. The museum is accessible with Sengan-en complex ticket. Unfortunately due to photosensitivity of many of the artifacts, photography is discouraged inside the museum.

Took 30+mins bus ride which comes infrequently. Got off and walked a couple mins to the entrance of the shrine gate where you see its buried. Small area where you learn the school kids play an active role in remembering this area. You could walk further behind the shrine gate and it takes you to a dense and dark forested area where there is another small shrine set up. It was quiet and felt eerie. We spent 5-7 minutes there before catching the bus on the opposite side of the road, if we missed that bus we would have to wait over an hr to get back to the ferry.

A great place to visit while on Sakurajima. There is a Parking lot on the opposite side of the road. Please stay respectful and don't climb on the gate (this goes out to my fellow Western tourists not controlling their offspring).

Very special and peaceful place, recommend to check the shrine as well, you can take gosuin for 300 yen near the tori
Mariia P — Google review
Without the context, it’s just a bit of stone in the ground. But when you learn how it happened, that’s a whole lot of a different story. It’s a quick stop that gives you a peek into the life on a peninsula with an active volcano. Quite scary to be honest. Recommend as a rest between vista points. There are clean and free toilets too.
Tomasz L — Google review
Worth a little stop if you have the time. Buried Torii from 1914 eruption
M S — Google review
What you see on the pictures is exactly what it is. Just a Tori gate opposite a small car park across the street. It was raining when we visited at dawn on a weekday so we had the Tori to ourselves. I can imagine that it is not as pleasant if you have hordes of tourists around. It would have been great they also preserve some buried houses like they did in Shimabara but who am I to ask for this.

Volcano
Nature & Parks
Sakurajima, an active stratovolcano in Kagoshima, Japan, was once an island until a massive 1914 eruption connected it to the Osumi peninsula. This volcano has erupted around 30 times throughout history and continues to emit steam and ash. With ties to Naples, Italy as its sister city, Kagoshima is often referred to as the 'Naples of the Orient.' The region enjoys a balmy climate most of the year.
As the sun set over Kagoshima, a rain shower between our ship and the volcano provided a beautiful and ephemeral view. Breathtaking.

It's a must place to visit in Kagoshima. I went there by ferry at 7.30, but the tourist centre and rental bike shops weren't open until 9am. I wasted a lot of time doing nothing on the island. The sight-seeing bus was convenient, but only the western part of the island is covered by it.
Masanao M — Google review
Great visit enjoying a ferry ride , some easy walk by the sea side and a usueful bus to climb to an observatory. The tourist center staff are so friendly ! One small comment when you walk from the ferry to catch bus stop 10 : the bus stop is not visible enough from the main road.
Claude L — Google review
Sakurajima is a ‘must-do’ if you are in Kagoshima. Take a twenty minutes ferry ride to the island. If you have the time, there are quite a few spots to visit.
Josephine O — Google review
Was rainy season on 12 June, misty cloudy surreal experience cruising around the island. We initially missed Sakurajimi peak at the viewing point but then managed to catch it after an public onsen dip (Sakurajima Magma Hot Spring) near the ferry terminal before heading back to Kagoshima. Will return if ever have the chance.

This volcano is a true highlight of Kagoshima. It's one of the most active in Japan, so you might even see smoke puffing out the top! The island itself is a neat mix of classic Japanese town and volcanic landscape, creating a really unique atmosphere. There are lots of cool things to see and do here, making it a great place to spend a trip.
NNchan — Google review
This place is amazingly pure natural scenery. It's an active volcano with constant / daily eruptions. You can't go too close to the summit mouth but can still get the feeling. You can get there by city ferry runs every 30 min from Kagoshima ferry port. In the island there is a hop-on hop-off tour bus taking you to all the spots. There is also natural hot spring foot bath to enjoy after some walk/hike. There are not much option of excursion on the island, a few convenient store and couple small restaurants. The nature is so relaxing and pure. There is no smell or smoke or sounds expected. Per nice 360 to city / pier views. Could make easily a fine half day trip out of it.
Max K — Google review
Great to visit on a clear day - ferry departs every 15 minutes between Kagoshima and Sakurajima. The tourist information center has a free museum and a screening about how Sakurajima was formed, with English subtitles (along with other languages). You can also buy a bus pass here if you’ll be hopping on and off the bus (500 yen for unlimited, 230 yen per ride, it’s a good deal). Highly recommend coming early in the morning if you want to hike around. Some sections of the island are accessible only with a car.

Ohkatei Restaurant

Japanese restaurant
Ohkatei Restaurant, located at Sengan-en in Kagoshima, offers a delightful dining experience with its sweet and crunchy moso bamboo shoots when in season. The restaurant provides lovely service, a pleasant air-conditioned atmosphere, and a picturesque view of Sakurajima and the bay. With an English menu available, guests can savor dishes like braised Kurobuta pork and affordable A5 Wagyu prepared shabu shabu style.
An absolute joy of a restaurant with amazing views of Sakurajima. The shabu shabu was excellent. Great service too.
Kieran M — Google review
I ordered the fish shabu-shabu. It was very good, but maybe not to the point of getting 5 stars. The place in itself is amazing, especially if you're lucky enough to have a seat near the window.
Habib M — Google review
Nearby Sengan-En,just walking distance Overall service was okay, but the view and food itself was very worthy! Try if you like shabushabu(hotpot) and high quality pork meat.
Chi W — Google review
Very busy restaurant with pretty view over the Sakurajima volcano, if seated by the window. I would recommend taking a queue number and then go to see the garden, restaurant would sent a SMS when the rime comes. We had two sets, pork and beef, the latter was slightly more expensive, but well worth the money since amount of meat was much more than then the one with pork. Food is served quite fast.
Bartosz B — Google review
One of the 2 restaurants in the garden. It will be on the pricier side with min spend of 2200 yen per meal. It's expensive but the quality is there. You also get a great view of sakurajima while dining. Service wise, they will only refill your tea if you ask for it.
May K — Google review
The place has an amazing view. Great good and very good service. We really enjoyed our lunch.
Gabriel R — Google review
The food was great and since I was a solo diner I got to sit in the bar type area facing the window with a great view of Sakurajima. However, note that this is geared towards tourists and if it so happens you visit at the same time as a tour group, expect to wait quite some time for your table, and expect your meal to be surrounded by some very very loud people. I got the kuroshi beef shabu shabu set, and the food was good, but it was hard to enjoy it with all the commotion in the restaurant. The staff looked overworked as well, and I kind of feel bad for them. I tried hard but couldn't fully enjoy my meal because there was the pressure of other customers trying to get a table. Fortunately, they do have a QR queuing system where they give you a slip and you can scan the QR to check if you're about to be called; So I recommend you get this slip at the start of your visit, go around the sites, then have a table (hopefully) ready for you once you finish walking around. Hopefully the management comes to an agreement with tour operators (esp. those with larger groups) to get advanced reservations so such a commotion doesn't occur and disturb other guests.
Lasmyr — Google review
A must visit place to have lunch in Kagoshima Sengan-en! The view from the restaurant was Magnificent 🤩, we were lucky enough to witness the Sakurajima erupted while having our lunch.

Shabu-shabu restaurant
Meat dish restaurant
Karen Kagoshima Branch is a popular shabu-shabu restaurant located in Karen City, Kagoshima. It offers a refined dining space where patrons can enjoy the traditional hot pot style with locally sourced Wagyu beef and black pork. The restaurant is known for its high-quality food and prompt service, making it a favorite among those looking to savor Japanese cuisine.
Specialized to promote the black beef, black pork and black chicken of Kagoshima, offered shave-shabu, steamed or grilled style. In addition steak and sukiyaki are offered as well. The hostess assist with the sukiyaki, ensuring the flavorful dish turns out perfectly. Delicious food and you will surely leave feeling satisfied.
Jing C — Google review
This is a restaurant that featured local Black cow and pork meats. You have the option of having the meat cooked in various ways-ie, sukiyaki, shabu, grilled, etc. the meats are good and very high quality. The service was professional and quick. Overall, a good experience.
C N — Google review
Good quality and the staff are kind and flexible enough to allow us sharing meals we ordered (some restaurants would require the entire table ordering the same set) Spacious and comfortable, and it’s very worthy to mention the very reasonable price. It’s only around 7000 yen on average for one person that we have already ordered the more expensive set already A place highly recommended
Ray W — Google review
Finding it might be a bit tricky through an elevator on the side of the main building entrance. It's in second floor. It's a Japanese hot pot (Shabu-Shabu) restaurant with variety of good tasty meats and veggies to cook your way. It's well decorated with modern classic decors. Tables are in cubicles giving you feeling of privacy or separated by plastic plastic sheets most likely remained post pandemic.
Max K — Google review
We came to Karen to try the shabu-shabu and grill of black pork, black beef and black chicken. The set menus come with an appetiser, the mains and a dessert platter. Everything from start to finish was high quality and worth your money! The staff also were super polite, warm and friendly. The ambience was beautiful and elegant. Please try all of Kagoshima’s famous produce here!
Michelle L — Google review
Highly enjoyable sukiyaki meal of Kagoshima beef and pork. Out of curiosity we also tried the steamed set, which was also a nice experience for enjoying the natural flavors of such excellent meat, but still, overall I preferred sukiyaki. Although, this restaurant is on the pricey side relative to Kagoshima, it's still very reasonably priced if you consider how much the same Kagoshima meat would be priced in Fukuoka or even somewhere like Tokyo. Highly recommend to try at least once!
Jay S — Google review
Exceptional shabu-shabu with top quality “kokugyu” (black cattle) and “kurobuta” (black pig) meat from the Kagoshima area. Excellent drink selection including some rare shochu like Murao and Moriizou. Staff was very accommodating given we asked for a same-day reservation without much advance notice. Somewhat expensive, but to be expected of a restaurant of this caliber.
Alexander F — Google review
The very unique thing of this place is the steaming. Which I’d enjoy it when i come pass Kagoshima. Used to have pork and beef only, now got Kagoshima black chicken. Enjoy the experience more than the food itself, although they are very good but not top end stuff. Relatively pricy but in exchange not many ppl come here, allows you to have a relaxing time.
