Tonkatsu restaurant
Restaurant
Aji No Tonkatsu Maruichi is a popular restaurant in Kagoshima known for its delicious tonkatsu, a breaded and deep-fried pork or chicken cutlet. The menu is simple but the homemade tonkatsu and flavorful sauces make it worth the wait, despite the often long queues. The head chef is friendly to foreigners and even provides guidance on how to properly enjoy the dish.
Had lunch here before visiting the volcano. There was a line but it only took around 15 minutes. Very kind staff and they speak a bit of English as well. They also have an English menu, and the staff will explain how to properly eat the Tonkotsu. Best tonkotsu I ever tasted!
Michael H — Google review
English menu, cash payment only. We waited ~30minutes at lunchtime to get a counter seat. The chef personally came out and explaines how to eat the meal. The meat was super juicy and tender, a really filling meal. Great service also!
Lochana — Google review
A must visit place for one of the most amazing tonkatsu. When we visited, there were a lot of locals eating there. It is truly a well loved tonkatsu store among locals. We all ordered pork and shrimp teishoku set. The serving portions are gigantic but we finished them anyway. If you visit during lunch time, I think the lunch set is enough to make you feel perfectly full. The sauce is sooooooooo good and very well balanced, not too tangy not too sweet. The chef recommended us to eat it along with mustard and it is the game changer. Despite the super thick cut of the pork, it is super juicy and tender. It lives up to the reputation of the tender kurobuta. The shrimps are also as big as a person’s face.
Subphanida K — Google review
Easily the best restaurant I've been to in Japan so far. The highest quality pork in the world, super crispy outside and juicy inside. Friendly family owns it. Not cheap but you pay for the amazing quality.
Kyle H — Google review
Super good restaurant . The chef has been working for long time, preparing delicious tonkatsu. This place is most when visiting Kagoshima. The portions are huge and price reasonable.
Enrique Z — Google review
Amazing and the best Tonkatsu in Kagoshima. The meat itself is thick and juicy with crispy outer. The owner is the chef himself. The owner also personally came to serve me after identified me as a foreigner from time to time even though the restaurant is busy.
Wei C — Google review
Came here at 11:40am and there was a line of around 10 people. By 12 we entered. Ordered the pork fillet katsu - 1400 yen including soup, rice and pickles. At first the owner looks like an angry owner but in fact he was very friendly and spoke English. The katsu was very juicy and of great quality, the breading was thick and crunchy which I liked a lot. Highly recommended. Now I need to go for a run to burn it off.
Boss — Google review
A truly excellent tonkatsu from a restaurant hidden in the basement of a little office building. The chef even took a moment of his time to demonstrate the best possible way to eat his epic Kagoshima pork (lots of tonkatsu sauce and mustard!). After three weeks travelling across Japan, this was a stand out meal.

Tonkatsu restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Meat dish restaurant
Kurobuta is a renowned specialty in Kagoshima city, with its origins dating back 400 years. This black pork, also known as Berkshire swine, is highly esteemed for its tender and flavorful meat. It is featured in various dishes such as shabu-shabu hot pot and black pork cutlets.
One of my top three restorants in Japan. The pork cutlet was suculant and so good. The added sauces were devine and home made. Even the sauces they gave for the cabage were so freking good. They should 100% bottle and sell those sauces. Everything was top notch and honestly great value as well for what tou get. It is for sure worth it. Do not miss this tresure.
David R — Google review
This is our second visit to Japan and this is the best Tonkatsu we have tasted. So fresh and beautifully cooked. Recommend the house speciality pork cutlet with charcoal and cocca crumb - delicious! We had to wait outside for about 15mins at 7pm on a Friday night but it was worth it. Most seating was along a counter but a couple of rooms were available fro groups. Staff were attentive and friendly.
Chris D — Google review
We were lucky to find 2 seats at this place, cause usually is always full, sadly we were late to try the shabu-shabu cause the place was closing soon. We took two kurobuta Katsu sets with the black breading, the pork was really tender and juicy, they offer miso or katsuo signature sauce for the Katsu. Also two different dressing for the cabbage, the soup had pork chunks and mushrooms, everything was delicious. Price are in the range of the other kurobuta serving places and the stars was kind and helpful, they have English menu.
Cesare M — Google review
Exactly the kind of place we hoped to find here in Kagoshima Oishi! 😋 We had been recommended to try the black pork. And it was very good. Arrived around midday without a reservation. Shown to a bench table (2 next to each other). QR code got us a menu in English, and the sauces were helpfully labelled in English too 🥰 My black pork set lunch was delicious 😋 The pork crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Homemade dipping sauce was very good, but I found the miso sauce even better ☺️ Pickles, rice bowl and miso soup all tasty. Ebisu beer (Oishi!) and a shochu tasting for drinks Great service. Reasonably priced. Highly recommended
Mark B — Google review
Amazing food at very, very reasonable prices. The kurobuta was excellent; would highly recommend the sirloin (~¥3000) set meal. As other reviews have noted, the accompanying condiments are exceptional. Tiny gripe: the draft beers are a little small for the price. Feels a tiny bit like gouging. Which is weird, given the decent prices for everything else! If I come back to Kago, I'm coming back here.
Ralph M — Google review
Ordered both sesame and normal black pork katsu. This is the best pork katsu I had - crunchy on the outer, juicy on the inner. Tried all the 3 sauces and still preferred their home made sauce which brought out the taste of the pork. We also ordered a lunch time special of black pork shabu shabu to go with. It also came with 3 sauces and the japanese style sauce is surprisingly better than the sesame ponzu, or the salt sauce.
Gaius L — Google review
The ambience is warm and the room we sat in is decorated like an old Japanese home. We ordered the black crusted pork loin and fillet tonkatsu because of their varying amount of fat. It is a utter disappointment. The crust falls off the meat readily and before eating the meat looks not juicy like normal pork cutlets but bone dry. I don’t know why perhaps the meat is too overcooked. The service is good but a little rushed. They have to clear the table for the next customers. Nice atmosphere but the food disappoints! Service acceptable because they are busy!
Anthony T — Google review
Very tiny restaurant, i think they can accomodate up to 10 people. So be prepared to wait (i was quite lucky in that regard). I got the pork tonkatsu and the pork was cooked quite nicely (however it could have used a bit of seasoning). Sides to the dish were also quite tasty and so was ice cream

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Restaurant
Mawaru Sushi Mekkemon Dolphin Port is a sushi restaurant located in Kagoshima, near the ferry terminal and the Dolphin Port shopping center. The restaurant offers fast service, a friendly atmosphere, and a variety of fresh seafood dishes. Customers can choose from the menu or pick cold dishes from the conveyor belt, with sushi plates ranging in price. Popular dishes include seared salmon with mayonnaise, tuna chunks, sweet prawns, scallops, and eel.
The restaurant opens at 17.00. We arrived here at 16:47 on Friday, soon started queue up. Luckily, we were the first one to get in. Unforgettable experience! Friendly service, fresh ingredients, with impressive mountain view. Worth trying!
Cassy W — Google review
Don't let the wait time deter you—this sushi restaurant is nice! Even arriving early on a weekday evening (around 5:30 PM), I experienced a significant two-hour wait. While the limited waiting area seating was a bit of a challenge, and I observed many locals opting to wait in their cars, the eventual reward was worth it. The staff's kindness, especially towards foreigners, was truly exceptional. Their patience and attentiveness made the long wait more bearable. Once seated, both the chefs and waitresses were incredibly welcoming, consistently checking on my preferences and ensuring a delightful dining experience. And the sushi? fantastic! The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were simply outstanding. The quality of the ingredients and the chef's skill. But some in menu is so-so. Despite the extended wait, the overall experience I love is superb service, coupled with the delectable sushi. Just be sure to plan your visit accordingly and be prepared for a potential wait.

Everything was amazing. The food, service, the staff were hands down unmatched. I stumbled across this place because I was searching for something else. I walked in and was immediately ushered to the counter since I was alone. I grabbed sushi as it went around and asked for wasabi from the chefs. The soup was delicious, the variety of sushi was outstanding. I’ll definitely be back next year.
Fredrick M — Google review
This is the best place to get sushi in Kagoshima. It is affordable, extremely fresh and has excellent service. Either come in early or make sure you have an hour to spare since wait times can be quite long. It’s worth the wait tho!

This "conveyer belt" chain could easily do without the conveyer belt. I was surprised by the quality and selection of seasonal fish that they offer. The cooked and fried items are delicious as well. I easily spent more than I normally would have because of the overall quality and variety of interesting dishes that they offered. They even fry your filleted fish bones and shrimp heads for you to enjoy Overall it was a great experience and one I would happily pay for again.
Leslie S — Google review
This review is based on Sunday May 11, 2025 Mother’s Day here in Japan and it was crazy. About an hour and 10 minute wait but very orderly. The sushi was all made fresh and excellent quality, price is very reasonable about a half with you’d pay in the US for the same sushi and not near the flavor. Check out some of my videos.
Lawrence G — Google review
We dropped by Mawaru Sushi Mekkemon Dolphin Port during our time in Kagoshima—and it quickly became one of our favorite sushi stops! What made it great: • The sushi was incredibly fresh with a wide variety, from seared salmon and tuna to sweet shrimp and scallops. Everything was flavorful and well-prepared. • The two-tier conveyor system was fun and efficient—sushi ran on the top belt, and sauces and cups on the lower belt. • The place was lively and welcoming, with cheerful greetings from the staff and a buzzing vibe that added to the experience. • The prices were very reasonable considering the quality. It felt like having top-tier sushi without the hefty price tag. We also noticed that it’s popular with both locals and tourists. Expect a bit of a wait during dinner time, but it’s well worth it. Pro tip: Go early around opening hours to beat the crowd. The heart-shaped tamagoyaki and seared mayo salmon were standout dishes. Don’t forget to try both the sweet and salty soy sauces too. If you’re visiting Kagoshima and looking for a fun and tasty sushi experience, Mekkemon at Dolphin Port is a must.

Shabu-shabu restaurant
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Ajimori is a renowned restaurant in Tokyo that specializes in serving up shabu-shabu, a traditional Japanese dish featuring Kagoshima style dark pork cooked in boiling water alongside fresh vegetables. The minimalist dining space creates an intimate atmosphere for enjoying the lunch set menus and hot pot dishes. Guests can savor the experience of cooking their own meal at the table, with slices of meat and vegetables quickly prepared in a pot of boiling water.
This is black pork shabu-shabu, dipped in dashi. The natural sweetness of the black pork is truly astonishing. Even when boiled, it produces almost no scum, and each bite of this beautifully tender pork fills your mouth with happiness. It’s absolutely delicious. This is the kind of restaurant you can’t help but recommend to others!
K — Google review
It's a very busy famous restaurant, so we walked in to make reservation 2 days before we had the lunch. It was impressive the manager still remembered my name when we just arrived at restaurant 2 days later. The pork belly shabu shabu is the best choice in the town. Lady serving our table is very kind and professional. However, only 1 hour was allowed for customer for lunch, it may be a little bit rush for having shabu shabu. Despite that, it was an excellent lunch to taste the black pork at Kagoshima.
Jason M — Google review
The establishment truly excels in providing a wonderful experience. The high quality is evident in every detail. The service provided is truly exceptional and contributes to a pleasant atmosphere. The private rooms offer a touch of elegance and exclusivity. A particular dish, featuring pork, was truly outstanding and deserves special recognition. The entire experience was delightful from start to finish. A return visit would certainly be a pleasure. It's a place worth recommending to others seeking a remarkable dining experience.

Very nice kurobuta cutlet. I had layer pork cutlet with cheese. The bottle sauce is lighter side and vinegary. Vege sides quite something.
Charlie Z — Google review
You can enjoy freshly fried tonkatsu. This restaurant is featured in cartoons and magazines, and has a long line of customers.
HIDE H — Google review
Kagoshima is well known for its kurobuta. This restaurant does tonkatsu for lunch and Shabu Shabu for dinner using this special pork. We ordered special kurobuta and lunch special tonkatsu sets. Although the kurobuta was supposed to be far superior for me it was tasty but a little too much fatty bits came with my cut. Also the breading was over cooked a bit. It was burnt in my opinion. So the kurobuta experience was not as good as the ones I had in the past. Actually the lunch special tonkatsu set was only 1000 Yen and it tasted really good. I think I would suggest that ordering the lunch special was delicious enough and very cost effective. The special kurobuta set was 3000 yen and it was underperforming. I wonder how the Shabu Shabu during dinner would be…
Jung L — Google review
Was recommended to Ajimori by a Kagoshima native and this place lives up to expectations. In time for lunch specials and there were many choices. The side dishes were better than most places. The offerings were different and each dish was distinctly delicious. The main course was of course the kurobuta, which we had as tonkatsu and ginger-fried. The tonkatsu was excellent. Crispy, crunchy exterior with moist juicy pork. The ginger-fried pork was also well-prepared and complemented the finely shredded slaw and rice. Excellent service. Excellent meal at a good price. Would come back to try other items and the dinner menu.

Ramen restaurant
Tontoro Ramen Kagoshima Chuo Station Restaurant is a popular spot in Kagoshima known for its variety of flavorful ramen options. The signature dish, Tontoro's pork ramen, stands out with its unique smoky taste that captures the essence of the volcanic island. Despite being busy during lunch and dinner times, the prices are reasonable and the quality of ramen is exceptional. The broth is described as light yet satisfying, while the tender pork adds to the overall experience.
Wow, absolute fire. I loved most of this ramen. The noodles were a little overcooked, but otherwise, perfect broth - meaty, clear, flavorful and easy to drink. Excellent toppings, soft as hell char sui, sweet and tangy. Amazing. I'd recommend getting a regular portion and adding char sui. I found that my proportions were just right with that strategy. It might have felt a bit lacking otherwise.
Benjie G — Google review
The pork on ramen was basically 70% fat. It's not typically slices but just bits. Taste of the soup was alright but extremely greasy. The dumpling was either steamed or boiled. The texture is like wonton which no one will expect. Won't go there again
J M — Google review
Thick broth full with flavor. Got recommended by my friend who is a Kagoshima local. A great ramen place to go to after a tiring day.
Yuan L — Google review
The broth is tasty but a little too salty. It is a small place with 2 tables for 4 people each, and a line of 4 single seats along the wall. They have student ramen for 490y, which can upsize for 520y, so I saw a few students there dinner time. The fried golden brown garlic bits that came with the ramen is very nice, but I didn't like the char siu shredded, as that made it seem like I got less char siu than sliced ones.
Rin V — Google review
Amazing ramen! The broth was tasty and full of flavor. The egg was perfectly cooked. It’s also probably one of the best char siu I have ever tried; the pork was juicy, tender, and well-marinated. I ordered the regular serving. I regret not taking the large serving. The gyoza was okay if a bit small. Will likely return if I’m visiting the area again. Staff was also very friendly and accommodating.
Richard C — Google review
A nice ramen with a light broth. The MVP is definitely the pork, and even a gentle prod with your chopsticks will break it. The soup however is fairly light for a tonkotsu broth, but did the job for two hungry travellers. We came off-peak but it would probably be fairly busy given that it's in the centre of the shopping and happening district.

This Ramen restaurant is very near to the Kagoshima Chuo( Chuo means Central) Station. They serve value of money ramen made with Pork Bone and Fish broth. The broth is thick and aromatic, noodle is Al Dente, the roasted pork is soft and tender. This is the first meal we have in Kagoshima. It is finished with highest satisfaction but only $10 USD per head. Highly recommended for tourists.

Yataro Sushi in Kagoshima is a must-visit for an authentic and unique sushi experience. The restaurant offers a genuine atmosphere, where diners can sit at the sushi bar and watch the skilled chef prepare special and delicious sushi. Visitors have been treated with Sochu by friendly locals, making it a memorable dining experience. Despite the lack of an English menu, the staff is friendly and accommodating, making it easy to order even for those with limited Japanese language skills.
If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. The food was absolutely amazing and we haven’t met a sweeter and more thoughtful people in whole of Japan. Thank you for the experience. Expedice Brno (Czech republic)

No English menu. Staff was friendly and helpful but limited vocabulary. Ordered the highest priced course. Fresh. Tasty. Nice plating. Portion was small. Ordered another sushi set afterwards but communication breakdown. It's not put through. Kept waiting and eventually we left disappointed. It's very noisy like a market place as other diners spoke too loudly nonstop.
Martlet — Google review
I came here after reading all the positive reviews but left disappointed. I ordered a sushi set of 3000 yen. As a sushi lover, I've tried a lot of sushi in my lifetime. However, the sushi here was mostly chewy and one had a chewy connective tissue and I couldn't chew or swallow it at all. I was a bit confused as to whether the fish in Kagoshima is supposed to be chewier than the usual sushi that I've tried in other regions. There were locals there who seemed like regulars so I'm not sure if a different cut of sushi was offered to us. For the price I think a sushi chain might offer better value. Others have mentioned that the sushi chef is quite friendly but maybe only towards Europeans / westerners? He requested that a European couple sign on his world map to indicate their country of origin but did not ask us. Is it because we are Asian but not Japanese? He asked me and my mother to get up from our chairs so that the European couple can sign on the map next to me at the corner seat. I'm not sure if that's really necessary. I dislike leaving such reviews that are not food related but I think people should leave honest reviews and this was just my personal experience. Your mileage may vary.
Eve N — Google review
The food was amazing and the atmosphere magical. Even though most of the menu is not translated (and has no pictures), the waiters were doing their best to help. The chef was happy to have international customers and also offered some gifts! I really recommend having dinner here!

My wife and I visited this place for dinner on a Thursday night. The staff were all very welcoming and the food was delicious. We had the chef's choice of sushi, chawanmushi, clam and mushroom soup, and coffee. Despite us knowing only very basic Japanese, we had a great evening. The waitress spoke some English and they also have an English menu. We would love to return again soon. A hidden gem and a step up from your average sushi bar - highly recommended.

If you're on the hunt for an unforgettable seafood experience in Kagoshima, look no further than Ikesu Ryori Uosho. Nestled conveniently near the central station, this gem specializes in serving up incredibly fresh seafood straight from their own tanks. The highlight of my visit was indulging in live Ise shrimp—though it came at a premium price, every bite was worth it!
Overall: 5 COVID-19 prevention: 3, hand sanitizer at entrance. A bit crowded and no distance between the seats. Location: 5, just a couple of walk from the Station Foods: 5, genuinely fresh seafoods Drinks: 5, Murao is provided with reasonable price Atmosphere: 5 Service: 5 Cost Performance: 5 Smoking: no Tourist Friendly: it depends, no English menu, occupied by the local guests Credit Card: yes, including Diners Comments: Presumably one of the best seafood restaurants in Kagoshima area. Fresh chub mackerel is highly recommended. Fried horse mackerel is also must order dish. You can enjoy local and authentic seafoods and shochu selections.

①Restaurant Features This is a delicious seafood restaurant that has a boat and catches fish from Kinko Bay for you to eat. They have a selection of Kagoshima's famous sweet potato shochu such as Moriizou, Maou, and Murao. The prices are high for a Kagoshima restaurant. ② How to order: The seasonal menu is displayed at the beginning of the menu, which is recommended. ③ Method of payment accepts credit cards as well as cash. ◎Sashimi of mackerel The fact that mackerel, which is prone to parasites and damage such as anixis, can be served as sashimi is proof of its freshness. You can enjoy the pleasure of eating clean mackerel. ◎Jidori Chicken Sashimi A dish unique to Kagoshima. It is the most favorite dish in Kagoshima, which has its own hygiene standard to avoid food poisoning such as Campylobacter. The thickly sliced jidori chicken is chewy and tasty.

(Translated by Google) This restaurant is one of the best in Kagoshima. All the dishes are carefully prepared and delicious. And reasonably priced. Maybe that's why it was a Tuesday, but it was very busy. It's a great place to entertain guests, as it seems to be frequented by local dignitaries. Personally, the first shellfish was delicious, and I was very satisfied with the grilled dishes, sashimi, and tempura. I was left thinking that was it, but the sushi at the end was just right. Do they also have a fishing boat? There were lots of photos like that.

(Translated by Google) A popular sashimi restaurant. Last time I visited Kagoshima, I couldn't eat without a reservation. It's very popular, so I suggest you make a reservation in advance. We arrived at around 6 o'clock on Tuesday and luckily there were 2 seats left at the bar. The swimming mackerel sashimi is super delicious, and the chef's recommended sashimi platter is also very good. The homemade fish cakes were excellent, the shrimp cakes were just so-so, 2 slices of lotus root fried with shrimp meat in between. Sushi is also a good choice! I grind the wasabi myself!

(Translated by Google) I made a reservation and visited here while traveling. The swimming mackerel was truly exquisite. Rich in fat, savory, and sweet, it was by far the tastiest mackerel I've ever eaten. I was amazed at how much difference a wild-caught mackerel can make with careful selection and preparation. The silver-ringed herring and filefish liver sashimi were also very tasty. The satsumaage was an incredible dish for the price. It's definitely something you should try. Everything was delicious, and while there were many drunk customers, it wasn't too rowdy, which was nice. The menu seems a little pricey, but the food was so delicious I thought it was reasonable. I enjoyed it so much last time that I decided to return while traveling. Everything was delicious, as expected. This time, the saury sashimi and soft roe tempura were excellent. I'm happy to be able to enjoy seasonal fish in a busy area near the station.

Tonkatsu restaurant
Kawakyu is a renowned tonkatsu restaurant located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is directly operated by a well-established butcher and has earned its place among the top 100 tonkatsu restaurants in Japan. The restaurant prides itself on using specially selected Berkshire pork to ensure exceptional flavor. Guests can savor breaded pork cutlets served on a bed of shredded cabbage in a laid-back setting with both floor and table seating options.
We did not know how to get in but we observe others holding a number receipt, so when a staff went out to say the next queue, we asked and she gave us a queue number. We waited for our turn and escorted our way to our seats. We ordered 2 tonkatsu (I think its rosu & hire). The reviews here is no joke, as it was one of the cheap and best tonkatsu that we had! Their sauces elevate the taste of the cutlets! They served it with miso soup and some side dishes.

Came here wtih good expectations of their black pork cutlet due to good reviews on Google and tabelog but was extremely disappointed Ordered the most expensive set meal available at JPY3,000 - Premium Black Pork Fillet Cutlet (200g) which was supposed to be the most tender and moist Food took about 10 - 15 minutes which was reasonable seeing the lunch crowd that day Tried the cutlet and the meat was very dry and harder than expected. The katsu skin was also terribly soggy on the side of the grill. Told the staff about the soggy skin and the staff replied and said "it was not supposed to be like this ie. The texture of the skin" and then we complained about the meat being dry and hard the 2nd time and the staff came back after talking to the chef with a reply via Google translate that says "the meat cooks through with residual heat" Told the staff that the meat came like this and was dry and hard from the beginning and subsequently the staff did not address the issue and left us at the table. Did not finish the cutlet in the end, left 3 out of 5 pieces (more than half of what was given to us). The best part of the entire meal is probably the raw lettuce which says alot considering they are a meat restaurant. In the end the staff said we did not have to pay for the meal but I believe it that was only after seeing how visibly upset we were over the meal. Even so, I highly do NOT recommend anyone to come visit this place for tonkatsu. Patron at your own risk. Will not be back again!

① Restaurant Review One of Kagoshima's renowned tonkatsu restaurants. Can enter without waiting around 12:30 PM on weekdays. Cash only. ② Food Review ○ Premium Black Pork Fillet Cutlet The cutlet's cross-section is a beautiful light pink. Generous portion with satisfying texture. The lean meat offers a firm bite.

I visited this place before 7pm on a weekday and almost full already. I ordered the pork chop with eggs and soup because I am not used to fried crispy food. The meat is freshly cooked and very hot. Very good taste. The price is attractively low. However the service is just average and staff is not really nice.

Come and eat try this restaurant because the blogger suggestion. Some up and down but overall worth a try. The restaurant selling point is the juicy pork and big size. The pork fillet is very juicy as you can see from the pic. As a man, I feel full after eating the whole set. My wife and I ordered 2 sets plus a bbq chicken. Both sets are cooked beautifully but the pork in eggs is a little bit salty. The bbq chicken is not good which dedicated a little bit marks. In my point of view, the chicken is not necessary to try. It is too dry and hard like eating chewing gum. The price is fair not expensive (4020yen/2 person). Worth a try if you are going to Kagoshima.
Felix Y — Google review
Ordered the kurobuta rosu katsu (1,900JPY for 150g). I thought it would be an ordinary-tasting katsu but boy was i wrong. The meat was pink in the middle (they will ask you if you are ok with this when you place your order) and it was so, so juicy??? It was unbelievable how tender and juicy it was. And the fat was so savoury with a natural sweetness (Kurobuta is known for its sweet fat, so I’m not sure if the normal rosu katsu would taste as good). If you’re not good with fat, get the hire katsu. If you’re a big eater, you may considering going for the jyo (200g). Ive had many “premium” tonkatsus before, but this is the first that I could taste a difference, and a stark one at that. They offered 3 sauces (on the table): tonkatsu sauce, shoyu sauce, yuzu miso sauce. There was a sign on the table that said you could ask the staff for salt, karashi, mayo etc. I recommend the shoyu sauce so you can fully taste the sweetness of the meat. The price is definitely higher than your regular run-of-the-mill to katsu, but it’s not pricey for what you are getting. Definitely worth a try if your budget allows for it. They were advertising take out for 10% off at that time. Beware though, I lined up 30min before the store opened, but I was still in the second group to be let in. So in total, it was a 1hour wait for me in total. I honestly couldn’t recommend this place enough. It was 100% worth the time and wait for me.

Pork is very tender. The fillet cut is lean, but soft, and the roast cut is fatty and juicy. The wait is long to get in, and still about 25 to 30 min wait once ordering

As recommended by Tabelog, the pork cutlet here is great and juicy with proper fat. It may take you some time to longer up in front of the shop, but worth waiting.

We ordered the oden and shabu sets. The shabu shabu meat was pretty good. I loved the fish and chicken sashimi side dishes as well. The oden was quite interesting. The soup was much thicker that I am used to, not sure if it is a Kyushu or Kagoshima style. But still pretty delicious. We went pretty late on a week day, I think it was past 8pm, so there wasn’t much of a queue. We just waited around 5min

The name 吾愛人 attracts us to go for a dinner. The passion of the owner is to [love your customers as you love your sweetheart]. Most staff can understand and speak little English, very friendly, attentive and warm welcome to guests. Sitting in the counter top is the best choice, I would say. The fish tempura, wakaka Shabu-shabu, signature dish of 蕯摩 (egg, tofu, 大根, 黑豚)are all delicious. English menu is available. Do make a reservation or visit after 8pm.

They have menu for single. Just half quantity, this is quite sweet. Biz is good. Atmosphere is good. Service is good. However, food isn’t. Ordered Odenx3 and Kushiyakix3 - these combined the most famous materials here - but overcooked. Price is high because they use famous pork and beef. Just wish they could make it better.

Dined at this renowned spot known for its traditional Kagoshima cuisine, and it's easy to see why it's a local favorite. A heads-up for anyone planning to visit: reservations are a must. I learned the hard way and ended up waiting for 1.5 hours, but it was absolutely worth the wait. I went for the set menu, which featured the region's celebrated chicken sashimi - a delicacy you'd be hard-pressed to find as safely prepared anywhere else. Also had the pleasure of trying kibinago sashimi, a local small fish specialty, along with pork tonkotsu and pork Shabu shabu. Kagoshima's warmer climate lends itself to perfecting poultry and pork dishes, and this meal was a testament to that. The chicken sashimi was a standout, surprisingly more reminiscent of fish in its taste and texture. It was an exceptional dining experience that justified every minute of the wait. A 5-star meal that truly showcased the best of Kagoshima's culinary offerings.

Decently priced and delicious food. Sashimi was fresh. The premium kurobuta shabu shabu was amazing. You could smell the fragrance of pork which would be usually stinky. Food was also served fast.

I just visited Kagoshima Chuo Station's shop before I tried Tenmonkan' shop. ( Chuo Station's one is good except Tenmonkan.) When we have placed an order about 10 minutes, there're no beverages for us. Two of the Japanese local who were seated next to us and ordered later than us, and they had drinks and meals first. It's quite awkward. (We ordered the same oden. ) When the food started to be served, there were no plates on the table, and we rang the bell four times but there was no staff to help. The food quality is bad which compare with Chuo Station, no matter sashimi or BBQ skewers. The chicken liver skewer is raw at middle. It's not worth if you specified to eat.

Definitely book ahead at this place as they don't take walk-ins, but the reservation process is a breeze. Caught in the rain and running late, I was relieved they accommodated my last-minute rescheduling. The meal? Absolutely no regrets. Opted for the lunch set - grilled beef, kibihago sashimi, and satsuma-age - and each dish was a knockout. It was all so delicious, I devoured it before I even thought to snap a picture of the whole display! Had my eye on the famed black pig pork, but after a pork-heavy week, I leaned towards beef, which didn't disappoint. Still, the black pig shabushabu is on my list for next time! And the cherry on top? A complimentary beer, a delightful surprise I only noticed when it wasn't on the bill. A huge thank you to the staff for that! This place is a must-visit in Kagoshima, earning a solid 5 stars from me. Can't wait for my next visit to dive into more of their culinary delights!

Jambo Mochi Shop offers a local delicacy called Jambo mochi, which are rice cakes skewered on sticks and coated with sweet soy, miso, or kokuto caramel sauce. The shop's name originates from a mispronunciation of the Chinese word for 'two.' Customers can enjoy the mochi with three different sauces: soy sauce, soybean paste, and soybean powder with black sugar.
Dango was very delicious. There were a total of three sauces: 1 soy sauce, 2 soybean paste, 3 soybean powder and black sugar. The harmony with the rice cake was good. I also enjoyed the hot green tea. Eating inside a traditional Japanese-style building made it even more special. I recommend it.

Exceeding our expectation! This restaurant offers very good quality pork cuisines and hotpot that we really enjoyed! We are a family of 4 with small kinds and they gave us an independent room to enjoy the food with privacy.

This was such a fantastic place, offering high-quality pork and delicious food. Everyone was also incredibly friendly. My friend and I ordered two completely different meals — I had shabu-shabu and my friend had the tonkatsu set. They kindly provided a full set of condiments and utensils for both of us individually. Since I’ve forgotten most of my Japanese, there was a small mix-up where I accidentally poured a dressing meant for something else onto my salad. Even though we said it was okay, the staff insisted on replacing it with a fresh one — we really appreciated their attentiveness and kindness. The dashi broth for the hotpot was especially flavorful — light yet rich — and truly memorable. I also noticed they sell some of their sauces and products for takeaway near the entrance. My suitcase was full this time, but I’m sure I’ll be bringing some home with me next time I visit Kagoshima!

If you're in Kagoshima, this spot is a total must-try for meat lovers! They serve the region’s famous “Roppaku Black Pork,” known for its fine texture, juicy bite, and that perfect balance of tenderness and bounce. Whether it’s their classic black pork shabu-shabu or the crispy tonkatsu, every dish lets that rich flavor shine through. And don’t even get me started on the Kagoshima Wagyu — this melt-in-your-mouth beef is one of the top Wagyu brands in Japan, from the prized Kuroge (black-haired) breed. The marbling is just right, the fat is buttery but not overwhelming. We left completely satisfied (and a little too full, oops) — 100% recommend this place to anyone looking for a meaty feast in Kagoshima!

Kurokatsutei is a popular spot known for its delicious fried black pork Tonkatsu made from carefully selected Satsuma black pork cutlets. The pork is aged slowly to enhance its sweetness and then fried with specially chosen bread crumbs, resulting in a delectable dish. In addition to the signature Tonkatsu, the menu also features options such as Momo katsu set, which consists of thinly sliced meat, and a classic Pork loin cutlet set.
We arrived in Kagoshima late in the evening and, naturally, went hunting for a place to try the city’s famed pork. Kurokatsutei in Tenmonkan was our pick for dinner — and it absolutely hit the spot. Despite the hour, we were seated pretty quickly. The place had a relaxed, homely feel, perfect for winding down after a long day. We went straight for the signature tonkatsu — and it didn’t disappoint. The pork cutlet was fried to crispy perfection with a light breadcrumb coating, while the meat inside was juicy and full of flavor. The tangy tonkatsu sauce paired so well with the richness of the pork — it really lifted the whole dish. We also ordered the grilled meat skewers, and those were a pleasant surprise. Charred just right and seasoned to bring out the natural sweetness of the pork, they added a nice contrast to the fried dishes. If you’re in Kagoshima and craving pork done right — both fried and grilled — this place is definitely worth a stop.

We visited this restaurant around 7-8 PM and were seated immediately without any wait. We ordered a fried meat platter and a pork skewer platter, which turned out to be excellent choices. The fried shrimp was particularly delicious, standing out as a highlight of the meal. The pork cutlet was impressively juicy and flavorful. From the skewer platter, the pork meat skewers were aromatic and tasty, while the pork intestine skewers were also a delightful surprise. The only item that didn't quite meet our preferences was the pork liver skewer. We found the liver slices a bit too thick for our liking. Overall, it was a satisfying dining experience with a variety of well-prepared meat dishes. The restaurant offered a pleasant atmosphere with no waiting time during the evening hours. It's a great spot for meat lovers looking for a diverse selection of fried and grilled options.

I went there alone in late July around 6pm. The staff sat me down right away and were really friendly, even though I barely speak Japanese. It wasn't a problem though. I just pointed at what I wanted on the menu. I got a set with two black pork cutlets that came out super fast. The outside was really crispy but the pork inside was so tender. It wasn't greasy at all and didn't have that gross oily taste you sometimes get. It was especially good with just salt. You could really taste how different this pork was from regular pork. The sesame grinding thing was pretty fun too, and it goes really well with the pork. The pork roll was incredible. It was tender and a little sweet, and you could really taste the natural pork flavor.

must visit place for their kurobuta meat! Kagoshima is well-known for their Kurobuta and I had to try it. I came across this place via online search and decided to make reservation. I went for lunch on weekdays at 11:30am and there was no queue, however when I left (around 1230pm) there were people waiting for tables. It is within a walkable distance from Tenmonkan area. I ordered the Kurokatsu-Tei set, which comes rice, cabbages, and soup. During lunch, rice and cabbage is refillable. If you would like more soup, there will be a small extra charge. I also recommend you to try their minced kurobuta fried. You must eat it while it’s hot. The meat is crispy outside yet very juicy inside. Overall, I had a great meal!

The pork chop is very tender that gourmets never fails to try.

Izakaya restaurant
In Kagoshima, a dish called "ダイヤス" or torisashi is quite popular and can be found in almost every izakaya and supermarket. This dish, which consists of raw chicken sashimi, may be considered shocking outside of Kagoshima but is a staple in the region. The chicken sashimi is typically charred on the outside and chewy inside, making it a great accompaniment to cold beer and chu-hi.
The chicken sashimi is charred on the outside and chewy inside, which is great for snacking over cold beer and chu-hi. Portions are large yet prices are low here

Anyway, it is cheap! And delicious. The volume of food is also unquestionable. It was already crowded with many customers, but there were also several customers who came alone, so it is easy to go alone.
G.Mtajhw — Google review
The building is cool and the staff are nice. But the food is not so good unfortunately. We got the three recommended dishes: chicken sashimi, chicken skin salad, grilled chicken thigh. Chicken salad is totally waste of a dish in my opinion as it’s just cabbage chicken skin and Nori with vinegar. The other chicken dishes had good smoky flavor but I think the chef cut the chicken incorrectly because some parts were really tender but most were super chewy which is not typical for momo yakitori or chicken sashimi. The cost performance was really good as it’s a cheap place. But if you’re here on vacation you will get better food at another option.

"Aji no Roppaku" is a restaurant in downtown Kagoshima known for its precious Kurobuta, specifically the Roppaku Kurobuta with six white spots on its body. The set meal featuring Roppaku Kurobuta and Chami pork is popular, but regular customers often opt for the hearty and value-for-money cabbage bowl. Conveniently located near Tenmonkan arcade, the eatery offers an English-translated menu and quick, friendly service.
It was my first time trying black pork tonkatsu here, it was super delicious. There were a lot of people so I had to wait for around half an hour to get a table.

A good restaurant near the main road in Kagoshima, recommended for its delicious fried food. The menu also includes a complete English explanation of the dishes and ingredients.
Luigi B — Google review
We were there for lunch as part of a tour group. Nice small cozy restaurant that serves tonkatsu. Kagoshima is famous for kurobuta pork and that was what we had. Overall it is very tasty. Pork was very tender but also fatty. Because of that the dish came across as a little oily. I am used to having some form of dressing for the cabbage but was not provided and I didn't ask. Overall a good meal! If I were there alone in future I will want to try other dishes.

What a great place for a sushi train: inside a train station! They have room for luggage. Sit down, grab immediate sushi off the belt, finish, then run to your train. Vegetarian options are udon (comes with 2 fish cake), egg sushi and cucumber roll. Menu on their QR code site is in English. Prices 140-990¥

The food is a bit disappointing when you spent over 30min on the queue. Fish is not as fresh as we expected (kagoshima is surrounded by sea!) . The ネギトロ軍艦 is simply tasteless and not yet fully unfrozen. a very classic ,normal menu without excitement. I would prefer saving my time for other nice food insife the station

There are no surprises here, this is your typical conveyor belt sushi restaurant. This restaurant offers the bonus of having a QR code presented to you so that you can order off an English menu on your phone. This is all counter seating with small hot water dispensers and tea powder available at your convenience. Sushi here was good, not the best I’ve had but definitely where I would go if I had a sushi craving and needed a quick bite. When it comes to sushi, while it isn’t the fanciest omakase option or the freshest experience, the sushi here absolutely meets the standard and easily sits as the place I would go if I wanted fill a sushi craving without the bells and whistles. There are specials on the wall in only Japanese that you can order at request. They are not present in the QR code online menu ordering system that is accessible on your phone.

Hands down one of the best sushi train experiences l've ever had. The only one that comes close is another one in Sapporo, but that one was a 1+ hour wait, and this one we arrived at 11:30AM and did not have to wait. There was plenty of parking at the front and we had unlimited Chiran green tea refills. Overall, we had over 20 plates of nigiri, 2x miso soups and a chawanmushi for approx ¥11,000 which was extremely reasonably priced. Favorite Dishes: The aburi engawa was to die for - I've never seen such a huge portion of engawa on a piece of nigiri sushi EVER - it was so buttery it just melts immediately in your mouth. The yaki anago is another must try, yet again extremely tender and perfectly seasoned with kabayaki sauce.

Chanced upon this place after an afternoon of shopping! There was a queue at around 6.40pm but I guess that’s normal considering it’s dinner time. Been craving for some good sushi and glad I managed to satisfy my craving here. The sushi was freshly made and they all tasted amazing good. They had an English menu however take note that the list is not as extensive as the Japanese one. They will give you a piece of paper and you can write the number u want on it (extreme left) and the number of pieces u want per item. Take note that the right most column is for no wasabi and the one next to it is for wasabi. I would recommend using Google Translate to translate the Japanese menu. There are so many different options, with a great variety of sushi here, everything made fresh when you order it. Draft beer was good as well! Don’t miss this place out if u are having a craving for good sushi.

This is in lower level B1 inside Amu Plaza food court. It's a very casually sushi place with variety of nigiri, sashimi, rolls and variety plates. Mostly sushi bar with limited tables. I haven’t been to a conveyor belt sushi place in ages. And this one was a huge disappointment. The tables were sticky, the tablet was sticky, even the soy sauce bottles were sticky. The sushi (if you can even call it that) is a joke. And service is nonexistent. I’m not sure if my palette has matured or that conveyor belt sushi places have really gone downhill, all I know is that this place isn’t great. On the upside, if you’re strictly looking at calorie per dollar, this place isn’t that bad!
Aaron C — Google review
I really like this place. Food comes quickly, they're good at getting you in, and they're good at cashing you out. Only complaint is that they no longer give you separate dishes for mixing soy sauce and wasabi, and you have to put it directly on the piece. Prior to that change, I would have said all five. Obviously you can get better sushi, but at this price under this speed, I don't think anybody could complain at all.

Shabu-shabu restaurant
Ichiniisan, located in AMU Plaza Kagoshima, is renowned for its Black Pork Shabu Shabu, a Japanese hot-pot dish where thin slices of meat are quickly cooked in hot broth. The restaurant offers good service and the staff is exceptional. Visitors can expect a wait but can explore the plaza while waiting thanks to their efficient number system. English menus are available and the pork is described as fatty but delicious.
We arrived 1.5 hr before closing time and had a good experience. There were a lot of staff and the ones who served us were friendly. My husband and I shared the shabu shabu black pork set and added another plate of pork meat since we weren’t very hungry. It was delicious and satisfying. The set came with a small piece of pork katsu which was also very tender and juicy.
DTM — Google review
The food was very good! I know this location is famous for its shabu shabu but I went with the black pork cutlet course simply to try the variety of dishes with it. I was very pleased with the taste and the amount was perfect for me, but I typically eat smaller portions than others. I can’t say much about the atmosphere as I was seated at the counter to the right of the entrance. So I didn’t get to see the interior of the restaurant. The counter area itself was quite nice and the chef is right on the opposite side preparing the dishes. There were only a few people at the counter so it was a quiet, relaxing meal. My only issue was the service. There wasn’t a line when I arrived but I had to wait a few minutes for the staff working the register to help me because the other servers seemed to be ignoring me, even after the clerk called out for someone to seat me. Once seated, they did provide me with a QR code to the online English menu but no server came to take my order. The chef called for an assistant to take my order but he seemed very uneasy to take my order in English. So I ordered with the Japanese menu because it would have been awkward trying to use the English menu on my smartphone considering the distance to the assistant on the opposite side of the counter. I didn’t even receive a glass of water, but maybe this place doesn’t provide it without an explicit request. Various servers brought out portions of the course. The older woman was very kind but the younger staff seemed very cold, aside from the girl at the register when I paid my bill. I may have just come at a bad time. The staff did seem flustered when I arrived so maybe there was some incident just before I arrived. I don’t know the reason behind the attitude but it made me feel unwelcome. In any case, the food was delicious and that’s the most important part of a meal. Perhaps I caught them on an off day, but it left me feeling that it may be difficult for foreigners with no Japanese ability to eat there.
Ncspacemonkey — Google review
Wanted to eat black pork shabu shabu so we googled and this came up. We went at about 4.30pm so there wasn’t that many people. Staffs were friendly even though they couldn’t speak english. We weren’t exactly sure how to eat it correctly so we asked the staffs who explained it to us using body language. The meat was really soft and tender, soba soup was delicious (but salty), yuzu was great as well. Sushi bowl is just rice with mushrooms, shredded eggs. Shabu plates are all pre made as you can see in the fridge which had the rotating shelves. This place seemed popular as they had a ticket machine for lining up and there were a few groups of customers waiting when we left. Dessert was really sweet, in fact too sweet that we couldn’t eat it after the first bite. Overall a great experience.

Ordered a pork sukiyaki. The pork is a bit standard. The first entree of the wagu and fried pork chop are a bit surprising. Other dishes are a bit normal. They served the dishes quite fast.
Lam H — Google review
Your waiter served me broken egg yolk with a piece of egg shell. I can crack a perfect raw egg since I was 10! Your udon noodles were over cooked and too soft that could not be picked up with chopsticks. I can make it better with a frozen noodle pack from a 7-eleven. Wife and I sat at the table for 15 min after finished eating and no one came to us. We thought the meal was done and we walked to the cashier. At the cashier we waited for 3 minutes and finally a lady showed up and wondered why we did not have the ordering check at the table. She went back to the table and trying to find the check but after a few moments she realized we have not received our desserts yet. We are not foreigners because my wife grew up in Tokyo with fluent Japanese language. It was at 920pm Sunday night, and there were only 6 customers including my wife and I in the restaurant. I think your staffs played too much and forgot about us. I am showing the receipt here to tell you we are good customers. It costed ¥10000 yen for two people’s dinner, and I want to say your staffs need to be more serious while at work!!
Joseph L — Google review
Great place to try the famed Kagoshima pork. Went there and got a number to wait, there were 20 people in front of us but only about a 30-40 minute wait in total. Great they have a system where you don't have to stand in line and can have a browse around the plaza whilst you wait. They had an English menu, and pork was fatty. The set menu was substantial and we also got an extra tonkatsu, probably unnecessary but we wanted to try it. We loved the fish cake, and the only call out for us is that we'd love more sauce or a soup base with the shabu shabu (as it appeared to be just water) but that means you got to actually taste the pork.
Juliet Z — Google review
Food was okay but it’s not the place that I would like to visit over and over again, considering the price and the taste. It was not until we asked for the bill that they serve us rice. I guess the waitress has kind of forgot to serve the rice and at that time was not even busy hour.

Every ingredient is fresh, and natural, every dish is handmade and well balanced in tastes. The best sashimi I've had in long time including much pricier restaurants. The fried eggplants with mochi are creative and delicious. In terms of taste and food, this is worth a Michelin star in my opinion.

(Translated by Google) I was able to visit again this year. The food is delicious and the hospitality is great. However, I would never recommend this restaurant to people who don't have a clearly stated price or who are turned away if they don't make a reservation (although it depends on the timing). This time, several people were turned away without a reservation, but anyone who knows the restaurant's capacity and the food they serve will understand. I don't think they would turn you away just because it was your first time. The owner (manager?) is very friendly, but when he's busy he focuses on cooking, so some people may find him brusque, but when he has free time, he's friendly and will talk to you. I hope this restaurant will continue for a long time. Many conveyor-belt sushi restaurants these days bring your sushi to you on a flick of a belt when you order, but this restaurant follows the traditional format of waiting for sushi to arrive with the colour of the sushi designated for your seat indicated. I personally thought the sweet shrimp gunkan, fried chicken, and Hokkaido Mille Crepe Melba were delicious. Sukiyaki and Shabu Shabu restaurant
Yushokutonsai Ichiniisan Tenmonkanten is a popular restaurant in Kagoshima known for its kurobuta pork shabu-shabu. The dish features thinly sliced kurobuta pork cooked in a hot pot alongside soba noodles and fresh vegetables. The restaurant offers a set menu that includes the meat and accompaniments, with additional helpings available as add-ons.
Everything was great. The food was good: Everything nice, fresh and served in a decent manner. The service was good: Although we had a little misunderstanding with the order, they apologised and followed-up swiftly. The location is good: It goes without saying, just look at the map. Price is reasonable: Although not exactly something for visitors with a tight budget, the course menu offers good food with decent quality and quantity. And for me, the best part is that you can just walk-in alone, with no reservations, and enjoy a wonderful full course in and hour or so - trust me, this isn't common in Japan, especially for shabu-shabu or yakiniku. Would surely recommend for people who enjoy travelling alone.

This was an elegant eatery with wooden flooring and beams, though the mood is more like casual dining. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and there is a fascinating setup displaying plates with meat near the cashier. We ordered a set of black pork shabu shabu sukiyaki, as well as some Black tonkatsu pork as the town is famous for it. The meats were of good quality, and there was also a plate of delicious sashimi. We were hungry so we also topped up with different platters of pork. Most of the platters come with a variety of sides, including miso soup and soba noodles. We also ordered a plate of grilled Kurobuta sausages, which were also delicious. This was the place where I had my crisp Canada Dry ginger ale, something which I have not been able to find for a long time. The eatery is located on the upper floor via stairs, or there is a lift if needed.

If you are a foreign tourist, please avoid this restaurant at all costs. Due to heavy rain, I arrived in Kagoshima at 3 PM and decided to dine here because of its many reviews. I’m not sure if it was because of the time (late afternoon), but the food was terrible—especially the chicken dish, which was just a plate of plain grilled chicken yet priced at ¥880. But the worst part was the service. Perhaps because they cater to many foreign tourists, they don’t care about their attitude. When we entered, the host at the door didn’t even look at us, just told us in Japanese to wait. Inside, the two servers didn’t smile at all throughout our meal. We also ordered steamed pork and fried pork cutlet. The younger female server simply brought the dishes without explaining which sauces paired with which dish or how to eat them. Only when I asked did she casually mention that both sauces were for the steamed pork—though I suspect the one with green onions was actually meant for the soba. The older server was slightly better, but when I pressed the call button for service, she saw me, and I ordered a beer. Later, another server (who handled food delivery and had a decent attitude) came by. I wanted to order another beer, but we couldn’t communicate. I said, *"I have already ordered with her,"* referring to the older server standing nearby, but even after hearing us talk about her, she didn’t come over to help. I’ve visited Japan 31 times, and this was easily in my top three worst dining experiences in the country. To emphasize again—if you’re a foreigner, stick to restaurants that primarily serve locals. That’s where you’ll truly experience Japanese hospitality and food quality. This place feels like a tourist trap meant for group tours. Absolutely terrible.

I am not a big fan of shabu shabu. However since the black pork (kura buta) is a local special dish I’ve decided to try. Absolutely amazing! 10/10! Great food, very nice and friendly staff, generous amount of dishes for a set meal course.
Irina M — Google review
We got two sets of the ¥4800 course set and shared between three of us. The arrangement of the pork slices was very pretty. Pork is thinly sliced and cooks very quickly. Once done, you dip into the dashi broth with spring onions/leek and eat it. You can taste the sweetness and original flavour of Kagoshima pork. I added a little of their yuzu "paste" into my broth which makes it even more appetizing. Just order the ¥4200 course set is sufficient. I don't find the side dishes that good. The soba was thin with a good texture but I prefer soba with a stronger buckwheat taste. I wish they could be more generous with the pork slices cos they were really delicious!

As with many restaurants in Japan, you push a button when you want your server to come back to your table. I wish we adopted this format for certain type of restaurants in the US. I feel like it would be so much more efficient. We had different forms of Black Pork to include Sukiyaki, Shabu Shabu, & Grilled.

Visited this famous restaurant for dinner mainly for its Kurobuta pork shabu shabu. So we order the 2900Yen set x2 which includes the meat, soba noodle and fresh vegetables. Extra helpings can be ordered as add ons. As expected the pork slices both look and taste good. The house special plum sauce highlights the sweetness of the pork. A polite request for a refillof the SAUCE is flatly refused. Why? it is less than 5 cc. A pity which brings down my marking on SERVICE. Another must eat in Kagoshima.

Great lunch joint. Surprisingly affordable given the quality of food and service provided here. A bit confusing to find as it is on the second floor of the building. Had the pork tonkatsu with egg for two lunches and was amazing, pork was flavorful and juicy and still crispy despite being on top of egg and rice. The place was spacious and wasn't cramped like some other places, a really comfortable environment to enjoy lunch after a walk through Tenmonkan!

Tonkatsu restaurant
Kurobuta Tonkatsu Kuroda is a renowned restaurant in Kagoshima, offering a wide variety of dishes featuring the famous black pork. The kurobuta pork is known for its rich and sweet flavor, with lighter fat compared to regular pork. The restaurant serves exquisite freshly fried fries and offers special mixed fries with different ingredients. Visitors can enjoy a Katsu variety set served with soup, salad, homemade truffle wa-fu dressing, and tsukemono.
I had a mixed fry platter. The black pork tonkatsu was fried at a low temperature, making it incredibly tender. With each bite, the natural sweetness of the pork spreads through your mouth. The menchi katsu was so unbelievably soft that its texture completely surprised me. Everything was of the highest quality and absolutely delicious. The staff’s hospitality was also excellent.

The black pork was nicely done. Was still juicy with every bite. Service by all was very nice. Attentively topped up dishes. Explained in detail about how each dish should be eaten. Kind and polite. Open kitchen and able to watch the chef and crew in action. Hopefully have time to be back

The texture of deep fried chicken is so soft and tastes liked the fish. Further, the pork filet is so succinct even it is deep fried. Don’t scared of the queue as it is worthy to wait and pay a visit. You will buy the coupons to redeem your set at the front door. The deep fried chicken is in the deluxe set.

I usually dont do food reviews but had to. This place is amazing and its the best tonkatsu I have ever eaten. First the chicken was so soft and tender simply amazing. The pork was so delicious including the ground version. This is michelin star quality and you get what you paid for. Ingredients are top notch. I hope michelin doesnt find this place because it will become impossible to eat here. I went right when it opened and about 10 min later the place filled up and a line started to form. Now I have a reason to come back to Kagoshima!
Vk L — Google review
I went there around 6pm. There was a queue with 10 prople and more joining after I was in. I waited for 15 minutes. I ordered the top grade asdorted set meal with rice, miso soup and salad at JPY 3200. It includes chicken tenderloin, pork tenderloin, pork loin with some nice fat, Japanese whiting and a big spawn at the end. They are served one after another, not being served at once, which is good as you can enjoy them in the best serving conditions. They are punching above their weight. I highly recommend them at your visit to Kagoshima. A great family-run restaurant.
Masanao M — Google review
You can tell by watching the open kitchen that it's very well run and coordinated. The timer basically goes on the moment you are about to be seated and frying begins. If I were to come back, I would try one of the mixed fried sets for some variety and to better pace the meal out. The meal feels very fast paced because of how coordinated the kitchen is and in a way it feels off. Also the music was a little odd? I wasn't expecting top 100 american pop music. Overall, it was a satisfying meal and it was a tasty way to enjoy kurobuta pork.

Tasty tonkatsu. Sharing is not allowed so it is not recommended for small/light eaters. Only go when you are hungry and can eat a good portion of rice + tonkatsu. Price is decent.

Unagi restaurant
Eel Mitsuru is a popular restaurant located at 3573-4 Shimofukumotocho, Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is known as a must-visit destination for eel enthusiasts who enjoy dark sauce. This establishment is situated in Japan's top eel farming area and is highly recommended for its freshly butchered eel grilled right before your eyes.
Freshly butchered eel, grilled in front of your eyes. One of the best in Japan at very reasonable price too. Needed to wait nearly 1hr despite arriving at 11:30am. Reservation recommended.
Natalie C — Google review
It's worth the wait! You can't book ahead here, it's first in best dressed via putting your name on the board at the front door together with your order. (Pro tip, if you write down your number plate, one of the workers will come and get you from your car, awesome service). The wait is usually about an hour but once you're in the food comes out quickly around 10-15mins. You won't find better value or quality of unagi in Kagoshima. Our unagi don set was 3800 yen (compare that to other places going for over 4500 yen). The serving was very generous and the meat was juicy and tender. There's a reason why this hidden gem is so popular with the locals and even #1 on tabelog and other local blog sources. A must visit if you want a great unagi (eel) experience!
Izumi M — Google review
Japan's number one in eel farming area. The “must-visit” restaurant in Kagoshima. Basically, reservations are required. Note that even if you make a reservation, it takes quite a long time for the eel to be cooked.

I returned just before opening time of 11am and was able to enter. By that time the restaurant was full, so I think it's best to arrive before opening time, even on a weekday, to be among the first to enter. I had the unagi bowl (3,800 yen). It's an incredible deal to be able to enjoy fluffy, high-quality eel that's been grilled raw for this price, and I think it's definitely worth making the trip here. I hadn't heard of it being aged, so it somehow bothered me. I don't often see meat this color in restaurants. The photo has been brightened. The flavor also felt a bit off. The special lunch was beautiful, but was it really this fatty? As others have written, my husband also said the rice smelled like mold. Maybe the dish towels weren't very clean. Very busy restaurant with pretty view over the Sakurajima volcano, if seated by the window. I would recommend taking a queue number and then go to see the garden, restaurant would sent a SMS when the rime comes. One of the 2 restaurants in the garden. It will be on the pricier side with min spend of 2200 yen per meal. It's expensive but the quality is there. You also get a great view of sakurajima while dining. Service wise, they will only refill your tea if you ask for it.

Gabriel R — Google review
The food was great and since I was a solo diner I got to sit in the bar type area facing the window with a great view of Sakurajima. However, note that this is geared towards tourists and if it so happens you visit at the same time as a tour group, expect to wait quite some time for your table, and expect your meal to be surrounded by some very very loud people. I got the kuroshi beef shabu shabu set, and the food was good, but it was hard to enjoy it with all the commotion in the restaurant. The staff looked overworked as well, and I kind of feel bad for them. I tried hard but couldn't fully enjoy my meal because there was the pressure of other customers trying to get a table. Fortunately, they do have a QR queuing system where they give you a slip and you can scan the QR to check if you're about to be called; So I recommend you get this slip at the start of your visit, go around the sites, then have a table (hopefully) ready for you once you finish walking around. Hopefully the management comes to an agreement with tour operators (esp. those with larger groups) to get advanced reservations so such a commotion doesn't occur and disturb other guests.

Oden restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Kirishima, Oden No Tsukasa is a delightful spot that serves up traditional oden featuring tender beef tendon. This eatery, located near Yakuo-in, exudes a nostalgic Showa-era ambiance that instantly transports you back in time. The warm and welcoming service adds to the overall experience, making it feel like home. On my recent visit with friends after quite some time apart, we were eager to try this highly recommended oden restaurant.
cheap and huge amount. Always crowded! Many local people here. The soup smells so good! 5 stars recommend: 牛スジ 大根 きんちゃく

Food is good. The services is average. The restaurant is a smoking restaurant, so you need to prepared that people will smoke inside the place. The restaurant is a tiny space, not many people can enter.

(Translated by Google) Me, my wife, and a friend went out to dinner for the first time in a while. My friend has a delicious oden restaurant in Kokubu, so I want to try it! I looked it up and found it right away. It seems like you can't make a reservation, so the store opens at 5:00 p.m., but when I went to the front of the store around 4:30 p.m., there wasn't anyone in line yet, so I got the first spot! After that, other customers started arriving one after another within a few minutes. There were about 10 people in line when the store opened at 5pm. It was full as soon as it opened, so it would be best to arrive early. I was guided to a seat behind the counter (behind the staff) and immediately ordered. The ordering method was to write the required quantity on a list and hand it to the clerk. Drinks (draft beer, non-alcoholic beer, oolong tea), Tonkotsu (tonkotsu, not cartilage, it has bones. It tastes like spare ribs. A dish that would go well with the side dish of rice simmered in miso. What is oden soup? It was served separately. The photo is for one person.) Deep-fried tofu, potatoes, konchikuwa, mochi pouch, garland chrysanthemum (I used komatsuna because it was early in the season), bean sprouts, tendon (like Achilles heel, so it was quite filling), taro, fried chicken (4 servings per person) So, I ordered 2 servings (the photo is perfect as a snack with beer!). I forgot to take a photo of the order form. There is no price listed on the order form, so I don't know the details. We ate for about an hour and a half, but during that time there were quite a few customers who turned us down. The taste of oden was also very delicious ✨ To finish off the meal, my wife and friend ordered egg-cooked rice (we were told it would be eaten with oden soup). There was no mention of egg-cooked rice on the order form, but when I asked the staff, I was able to order it. All three of us ate our fill and the bill was around 3,000 to 4,000 yen per person. It was large and filling, stewed tender, and had a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The atmosphere inside the store was calm and I was able to spend a pleasant time there. The oden stock also has a deep flavor that goes perfectly with the ingredients. Overall, it was a highly satisfying meal, and it is a restaurant that will make you want to visit again. Nestled in the southwestern corner of Kyushu Island, Kagoshima Prefecture is a hidden gem that beautifully combines natural wonders and cultural experiences. The capital city, Kagoshima City, boasts a warm climate and is home to the active volcano Sakurajima, perfect for hiking enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation in foot baths or hot springs.
Really amazing and wonderful meal, truly exceeded my expectations! The appetizers were very tasty and beautifully presented, with high quality ingredients. The steamed egg with onion soup was a unique combination that I've never tried before, and it works wonderfully. The abalone had wonderful texture as it was thick and perfectly cooked. The beef was of course beautifully marbled and top grade. The consumme was very flavorful yet light. I chose the rice with raw egg and salt and it was incredibly smooth and satisfying, highly recommend it! The creme brulee dessert was one of the best I've ever had, the texture was creamy but light, with fragrance of real vanilla beans, the Kagoshima black sugar was not overly sweet, a perfect balance. The whole family was very impressed by our Christmas meal! We were also assisted by Thomas, a hotel staff, who very kindly translated and assisted us throughout the night.

It offers a refined dining space where patrons can enjoy the traditional hot pot style with locally sourced Wagyu beef and black pork. The restaurant is known for its high-quality food and prompt service, making it a favorite among those looking to savor Japanese cuisine.

The hostess assist with the sukiyaki, ensuring the flavorful dish turns out perfectly. Delicious food and you will surely leave feeling satisfied.

This is a restaurant that featured local Black cow and pork meats. You have the option of having the meat cooked in various ways-ie, sukiyaki, shabu, grilled, etc. the meats are good and very high quality. The service was professional and quick. Overall, a good experience.

Good quality and the staff are kind and flexible enough to allow us sharing meals we ordered (some restaurants would require the entire table ordering the same set) Spacious and comfortable, and it’s very worthy to mention the very reasonable price. It’s only around 7000 yen on average for one person that we have already ordered the more expensive set already A place highly recommended

Finding it might be a bit tricky through an elevator on the side of the main building entrance. It's in second floor. It's a Japanese hot pot (Shabu-Shabu) restaurant with variety of good tasty meats and veggies to cook your way. It's well decorated with modern classic decors. Tables are in cubicles giving you feeling of privacy or separated by plastic plastic sheets most likely remained post pandemic.

We came to Karen to try the shabu-shabu and grill of black pork, black beef and black chicken. The set menus come with an appetiser, the mains and a dessert platter. Everything from start to finish was high quality and worth your money! The staff also were super polite, warm and friendly. The ambience was beautiful and elegant. Please try all of Kagoshima’s famous produce here!

Highly enjoyable sukiyaki meal of Kagoshima beef and pork. Out of curiosity we also tried the steamed set, which was also a nice experience for enjoying the natural flavors of such excellent meat, but still, overall I preferred sukiyaki. Although, this restaurant is on the pricey side relative to Kagoshima, it's still very reasonably priced if you consider how much the same Kagoshima meat would be priced in Fukuoka or even somewhere like Tokyo. Highly recommend to try at least once!

Exceptional shabu-shabu with top quality “kokugyu” (black cattle) and “kurobuta” (black pig) meat from the Kagoshima area. Excellent drink selection including some rare shochu like Murao and Moriizou. Staff was very accommodating given we asked for a same-day reservation without much advance notice. Somewhat expensive, but to be expected of a restaurant of this caliber.

The very unique thing of this place is the steaming. Which I’d enjoy it when i come pass Kagoshima. Used to have pork and beef only, now got Kagoshima black chicken. Enjoy the experience more than the food itself, although they are very good but not top end stuff. Relatively pricy but in exchange not many ppl come here, allows you to have a relaxing time.

Kokinta is a popular ramen spot with traditional flavors like miso, soy, and pork served in a simple setting. Despite the long lines, the wait moves quickly and diners can enjoy options like shio ramen with layered umami flavors or thicker, heavier miso ramen. The gyoza and fried rice are also highly recommended.
Great place - pork is best I’ve had, broth also solid. Fried rice was great also

Traditional style ramen popular with locals. There's usually a short queue in front of the store but the wait is short. They open till 3am, perfect for a snack after drinking at one of the many clubs near by. I guess this contributed to their popularity as well.

Kokinta is a nice ramen spot- no frills, inexpensive, and tasty. The waitress was very helpful as we don’t speak Japanese. We ordered the Tonkatsu ramen with the pork bones. Excellent pork and noodles were tasty. Broth wasn’t anything special but not bad. Also got the fried rice which was a hit. Great vibes and big portions, definitely worth a rainy day dinner!

Awesome ramen place though extremely busy and popular. Great for a late night meal in Kagoshima, very friendly service
Mike A — Google review
There is a reason you'll almost always find a queue of locals for this place - the ramen is very, very good. As a foreigner, this was the best ramen I have ever tasted. I selected the standard ramen with extra pork on the bone, which was so tender it was almost unbelievable. However, what would be a 5 star review has to be a 4 as we were overcharged - they mistakenly charged an extra 2k yen (they charged us for another table's bill, after the other table had presumably paid ours and left). We returned and they refunded the 2k though.
Kieran M — Google review
I went there alone for lunch in late July and had to wait about 10 minutes. Unlike most ramen places, you don't order from a ticket machine, they give you an actual menu instead. The shop is pretty cramped, so whenever someone walks by to leave, you have to lean forward a bit so they don't bump into you. I ordered a ramen set with fried rice and added an extra egg. I loved the fresh, crunchy bean sprouts and the noodles had this perfect slightly firm texture with a nice chew to them. The broth was amazing, really rich and flavorful. The fried rice was kind of disappointing though. It was a bit soggy and greasy, even though the seasoning was good. I'd definitely go back! It's one of the best ramen spots I've tried in Kagoshima.

best ramen ever had.. so delicious... also gyosa so good... fast service..
Gih P — Google review
There was a long line outside the restaurant at lunch time but the queue moves pretty fast. After 30 mins we were seated and tried both ramen soup bases. The shio ramen was my favourite, don’t be deceived by the white soup base, it is layered with flavours and it’s so umami! The miso ramen was thicker and heavier, and also very delicious. We had the gyoza on the side which was also spot on. We saw other diners trying the fried rice as well, but we were definitely full after the ramen. It’s been the best ramen I’ve had so far in Kyushu and I highly recommend this ramen!

Yushokutonsaiichiniisan Kagoshima Honten is a must-visit restaurant in Kagoshima, offering a wide variety of food options. The staff is known for their fantastic service and efforts to accommodate English-speaking customers with an English menu. Visitors praise the delicious silver-strip round herring and black pork shabu shabu, as well as the 3900 yen pork shabu shabu course that includes various dishes.
It was a pleasant lunch set there. I had Fried kurobuta with eggplant set for 1180yen (October 2024). They have special seating at the counter for single customers and also dining room for larger crowd. You can observe the chef prepare sashimi there. You have a cheaper option at lunch. The food was delicious and the service was awesome. I just only wait for 2 minutes before arranged for seating when I came at 1.45pm. The interior of the restaurant was pleasant and zen. The service was great, they were able to cater to me when I requested for the English menu. Would happy to come again! It seems their soba noodle and shabushabu were recommended. You can also enjoy Japanese sake in the shop.

They offered an outstanding black pork shabu shabu lunch set that beautifully highlighted the region’s specialty. The thinly sliced Kagoshima Kurobuta pork was delicately marbled, and when dipped briefly in the light dashi broth, it became tender and flavorful without losing its natural sweetness. The accompanying vegetables such as fresh greens, mushrooms, tofu, and finely shredded carrot, brought balance and variety to each bite. After the shabu shabu, the meal transitioned perfectly with rice served in a fragrant broth topped with pork slices and scallions, creating a comforting ochazuke-style dish. Finally, the course ended on a sweet note with a smooth and bittersweet pudding that paired well with the savory meal😍

Izakaya restaurant
Mengarufu Tenmonkan Main Restaurant is a ramen shop located in the Tenmonkan shopping district. Despite its narrow entry, it's easily identifiable by its prominent sign and oversized menu displayed outside. The restaurant offers six major types of Kagoshima ramen with a delicious soup base that's not too salty or oily, thanks to the addition of soy milk which gives it a silky texture. The pork meat in their ramen dishes is tender and flavorful.
I’m a big fan of the ramen here! I know it’s right by the tram stop at tenmonkan, so there’s a bit of a tourist trap vibe, but it’s honestly really good in my opinion. Broth is not clear but not too thick, taste of meat is excellent, noodles are good, boiled egg tastes great. The regular aburi ramen, the first one on the vending machine, is my favorite, although I tried tontoro and black pork also. Gyoza was fine, not remarkable really. But the standard ramen is excellent!
John B — Google review
This ramen place was very delicious, full of flavor, My only concern is the price. They are a little more expensive than any normal ramen shop, and that is why the place was full of tourists rather than japanese people for lunch. Other than that, I would say it was a good lunch, Gyoza was not the best, but it was worth a try!
Chris K — Google review
Good restaurant to try the famous Kagoshima ramen. Good quality and affordable price. Pay at the door from a vending machine and wait for it to be served. The char siu is really good quality. Thick yet tender and the fat melts in the mouth, however with the heaviness of the soup it adds too much fat to the ramen so it can feel too rich rather than nicely balanced. The gyoza was ok but the filling was a bit too soft. A good meal but would have been better at the end of a night after about 5 beers! 😂

It's amazing to have come back again to this ramen restaurant! I came last year and met Sagan and today I met him again! He served me a very tasty miso ramen and hard noodle as requested. The soup had lots of flavors that went well when adding garlic paste available in store. Extremely recommendable! Coming again to rejoice with very nice dish here, and stumbled upon with a unique Curry Ramen, Sagar's inspired dish. Not only great to have met him again, but also to try a dish based on his cuisine. Very special, not that hot, but good mix with curcumin and veggies. Never tried this around Japan and the flavor didn't disappoint. Very good to try!!

I like how simple the order step is. You purchase a ticket from vending machine, take it to waitress and wait for your ramen. The pork is delicious, but the taste of black pork ramen soup is just the same as miso ramen, nothing special.

Hidden along an alleyway and only manage to kmow there is a shop there from google map. A display table of what was served was placed outside the shop. Although obscure, the interior atmosphere was great. The ramen serve was great. 2 large slabs of kurobuta grilled over charcoal and perfectly cooked tamago. Soup was slightly salty but goes very well with the pork and ramen was perfectly cooked. We went around 5pm before dinner crowd so we were practically the only one there. Staff still greet us with a big smile. Definitely worth a visit.

What attracted us to the shop is that particular display of spicy pork ramen. Both of us ordered the same dish. The broth wasn't overly spicy, the umami is well balanced and the body is not sickly thick. Excellent broth. The noodles were cooked just nice. The highlight is the pork meat (charsiu). Smoky, tender and well marinated. Highly recommended.

Well, we don’t speak any Japanese some of this place was truly authentic for Ramen. I have no frame of reference, but we had a fabulous lunch and it was quite tasty. Tontoro Tenmonkan Arcade Restaurant, located near JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station, is renowned for its rich tonkotsu broth topped with scallions and a touch of garlic. Visitors praise the warm service from the two older women behind the counter who go out of their way to assist customers. The ramen here is described as exceptionally flavorful and distinct due to the quality of pork used.

Pretty decent Ramen, the broth is more on the thin side compared to Fukuoka style ramen. The garlic and pork, I think were the best parts of the dish. The only downside is since it's from an electronic stall, you can't really customize your noodles. I strongly prefer without onion, so I just picked them out after it came to me. But it appeared the lady working thought me removing the green onions with a spoon meant I didn't know how to use chopsticks so brought me fork.

Ramen restaurant
Chinese noodle restaurant
Satsuma Shimuja, formerly known as Innocent, is a ramen shop located near Maruya Gardens. The store has a clean interior and operates on a meal ticket system. Despite usually preferring Hakata ramen, many patrons opt for Satsuma's offerings due to the customizable noodle options and delicious thick soup that perfectly coats the noodles.
I visited this place in evening and at that time no customer inside. There is an ordering machine just next to the entrance. I ordered the satsuma special ramen. The soup is about right in taste and not too oily/flavour as compared to others. The pork is thick which I prefer. One thing to note is the ventilation is not good in this restaurant. Probably due to its small size, I can smell the smoke whenever the chef is frying food. This makes me a bit uncomfortable. Nevertheless, the experience overall is still good.

Ordered through the self service ticket machine. Simply used Google to translate. Friendly staff. The ramen was excellent. I picked the Kagoshima one as they do have Hakata styled. Less intense than Hakata styled which I prefer. Could taste the freshness. Very yummy

Can’t make it to Fukuoka for noodles? Enjoy HAKATA ramen in Kagoshima! The noodles, broth, toppings - all on par! The service, excellence. If hungry, remember that ‘kaidama’ is offered (extra (low) price). Personally, I like ‘kata-men’, or semi-hard noodles. You can specify this. The gyoza dumplings were a perfect match. Enjoy!!

The speciality at this restaurant is ramen 🍜 with various types of ramen available. Ordering and payment is accomplished conveniently using the touchscreen monitor at the entrance. On our recent visit we ordered the tantanmen and gyoza - both very tasty! Highly recommended 😸!

Perfect Yakiniku just 2 mins walk from Kagoshima JR Station. Service was excellent. I was seating at the chef table location. High quality meat with very reasonable price. Some are marinated meat and some are not.

(Translated by Google) I visited this restaurant for the first time the other day! The prices weren't too expensive, the meat was tender, and the beef tongue with salt and green onions was thin and soft, and the ponzu sauce made it refreshing, which was great! I ordered bibimbap to finish off the meal, and the staff mixed it up for me, and it even had a bit of char on it, making it the perfect way to finish off a meal! The service from the staff was also great! Even though there were a lot of customers, they were able to keep an eye on us, even in the corner seats, so we were able to eat in peace! The only disappointing thing was that there was a cockroach walking up the wall while we were eating, which was a bit disappointing. Vagabond Ramen is a must-visit spot for ramen enthusiasts in Kagoshima. The restaurant offers an exceptional Tsukemen that exceeds all expectations, with perfectly crafted elements and generously portioned, scrumptious meat. The pork belly melts in your mouth, the fish broth and tonkotsu combination is incredible, and the noodles are just right. Despite initial confusion about ordering options, the staff's great service ensures a satisfying experience.
The pork was excellent and so soft. You can get whatever dish you're having with 3 pieces of meat. The broth was super thick and rich.

We caught the last table before lunch break. There were fewer options, but we paid upfront, ordered and then got the table. The ramen was different than others we had and it was very rich and tasty. Nice people there. Prices are mid.

Most famous for its Tsukemen, the broth had so much depth and flavor, noodle texture was perfect, having options (thick/thin, served hot/cold, different amount of noodles no extra charge), meat (pork belly/ loin) was tender, flavorful & generous. So good that we visited twice~

Huge portions of noodles and the chashu was so delicious and also giant pieces as you can see. First time trying tsukemen and loved it. I was so stuffed at the end! There’s no English at the ordering machine so ask for their help or use a translation app on your phone if you can

Vagabond Ramen 麺歩 バガボンド exceeded all expectations! In my year of exploring Japan, I've never tasted Tsukemen this exceptional. Every element of the dish was crafted to perfection, but the standout was undeniably the meat – scrumptious and generously portioned. If you're ever in Kagoshima, don't miss the chance to savor their delicious offerings. I know I'll be back for more!

I've eaten a lot of ramen across Japan and the world, many famous places, chains, small shots in mountain towns, Michelin stars... I don't exactly know why, but this is the best ramen I've ever had. It was an incredible combination of fish broth and tonkotsu, the pork belly was insatiable, noodles perfect, price easy to handle, beer flowing. I'm not as much of a fan of true classic Hakata style, so this was a step ahead already. Spice was perfect, atmosphere local, in most respects this ramenya is pretty much standard. But after a few visits I had to realize it's the one I fantasize about the most, in the entire world. Go here.

Tenkaippin is a hidden gem located in Tenmonkan, offering uniquely flavored ramen made with delicious and thick chicken broth. The restaurant also serves great fried rice with perfectly separated grains, crispy and juicy gyoza, and succulent karaage. It's an affordable dining option that's perfect for late-night food runs as it stays open until 3AM. The staff are helpful and provide an English menu for international visitors.
Excellent place with diverse menu focused in ramen and set menus including fried rice, gyosas and fried chicken. I ordered a set menu with all that and sure was very tasty. SPECIAL was the garlic paste they had which has special spicy chili on it. A very good money-food amount ratio. Highly recommended!!

First time eating at this branch of tenkaipin but the food was great, only let down was the attitude of the server. The lad who took my order was very professional and polite, even reminding me to use soy sauce for my gyoza (so hungry I forgot) but overall it was great. Smaller than the other one, more inclusive for solo diners which was perfect for me tonight. Will go again.

(Recent) Picked the signature noodle and guess what, watery soup with weak and plain taste, and noodle are slightly soften. Taste like normal noodle hawker (屋台) that just aim to get full than taste. I can't even finish it and drag my wife out right away. Experience of 2yrs before were all gone. What the hell is going on? Definitely avoid it. (2yrs ago) Good and tasty concentrated chickens broth as the soup base with chewy noodle. Not as salty as usual Kyushu style ramen, but come with strong flavour and umami. Their fried rice is another shop signature. Nice taste and you feel the intensity of wok frying flavour that usually appeared in cantonese fried rice only. Recommended.

Taka Ramen restaurant offers quick service and a satisfying meal experience. When seated, the staff only inquire about the noodle volume, ensuring prompt delivery. It is important to note that their ramen in Kagoshima is substantial enough to be considered a complete meal, complemented by complimentary Japanese tea and pickles for palate cleansing. The taste remains consistent and evokes fond memories.
All you'll be asked by the staff when you get a seat is the volume of the noodle, and thus will be served quickly. Remember that a ramen in Kagoshima is a meal by itself, so you cannot miss the Japanese tea and some pickles served for free of charge to reset and refresh your taste. The taste is stable and the same as in my memories.

(Translated by Google) As of September 2020, ramen is 900 yen (tax included) With 150 yen of rice, the lunch was 1,050 yen. It's probably due to the price of the land, but even though prices are rising, 900 yen was a rather expensive ramen. It's so light that even with the addition of pepper, it doesn't taste too strong. This is my first cup of ramen, and I can't say it's old-fashioned or Kagoshima ramen. The noodles were delicious as usual. I was watching the cooking from the counter, and the soup was sweet with about 3 types of seasonings (powder and liquid). Hmm, I think if you add 500 yen per coin and 150 yen for the land fee to 650 yen, you'll get a little more customers. There is a reason why you can sit comfortably at 12 o'clock.

Perhaps because it was well past lunchtime on a Sunday, there were no customers and the air conditioning was on, making for a comfortable experience. The menu is simple and straightforward: extra-large ramen for 1,200 yen, ramen for 1,000 yen, and rice for 200 yen. The restaurant has 10 seats at the counter, one table for two, and three tatami tables that can comfortably seat four, making it easy to visit whether you're alone or in a group. Although this restaurant has been around for a long time, you can enjoy a unique flavor that differs from the typical Kagoshima ramen style. I'm pretty full after eating lunch for the 6th time in a row. But since I'm in Kagoshima, where I rarely come, I have to try my best. This time, I went to "Ramen Senmon Taka", a long-established restaurant that has been in business for over 55 years and has been witnessing the history of Kagoshima. It's located near Yamagataya. It's open all day, so it's easy to visit. It's a long-established restaurant that can't be missed when talking about Kagoshima ramen, which has become a kind of soul food for Kagoshima residents and has a "nostalgic taste". When I entered the restaurant, there were two customers ahead of me. It was empty because it was near closing time in the evening. The menu only has ramen, which is a bit of a hardcore thing. When I sat at the counter, I was asked, "Is regular ramen okay?" Regular or large. And the only option was to add "rice". Put the noodles in the pot, put the wooden lid on... and quickly lift the noodles into a flat strainer. The food was being served smoothly. _______________ 🟦 Impressions ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ The soup is clear pork bone soup, made mainly from pork bones and chicken carcasses. I'm ashamed to say that I had no image of clear pork bone soup until this trip to Kagoshima, so I was surprised to encounter it quite often on this trip. The soup starts off clear. The aftertaste is mellow with finishing oil and animal fats... The simple dashi stock is used, and you can feel the balance of the flavor of a long-established restaurant. The sweetness spreads further in the aftertaste. It's quite sweet. I wonder if this comes from the soy sauce. I wonder if they use sweet soy sauce unique to southern Kyushu? It probably wouldn't work very well even if you tried to recreate this ramen in Tokyo. And it's full of chemical seasonings!! The power of chemistry is also typical of a long-established restaurant. The noodles feel hard-boiled. The noodles have a fairly dry texture. They are firm and chewy. I felt they were the hardest boiled noodles I've had on this trip, but many previous reviews have said they were soft. Maybe it's just a matter of inaccuracy. It was just one bowl, and it was just for me. It was delicious, and I ate it all. What impressed me was the strong sweetness. I wonder if people in this area have fond memories of this sweetness... It seems that the store may be closed at night depending on sales during the day, so I called the store around 4:00 pm to confirm before visiting. My wife told me it would be better to come early, so I came before 5:00pm. There was also a gyoza set meal that included 8 gyoza pieces + rice, miso soup, and pickles, but since I was in a gyoza specialty restaurant, I decided to eat 16 gyoza pieces. I felt that the baking time was quite long. The browned parts are crunchy and resemble rice crackers. The white part was chewy, and I thought it certainly had a texture that you can't get with other gyoza. The filling inside is full of minced meat, so it's not the meaty type, and it's not the type that's lightened with vegetables, but it's somewhere in between. Anyway, I'm glad I was able to make my Howagyo debut. Thank you for the meal. Just enter the store and pay at the cash register. This time I ordered the gyoza set meal. I waited inside the store until a seat became available. I was able to sit down after waiting for about 30 minutes. Once we were seated, we didn't have to wait long before the food came out. It was my first time to eat white gyoza, but the skin was so thick that I had never seen it before in Kagoshima. The taste is delicious. On the day I went, by around 12:45, all of the gyoza seemed to be sold out, and there was a sign posted on the entrance door saying that they were sold out. It's a popular store, so it's best to arrive early.

(Translated by Google) It opened at 12:00, but we arrived at 11:25 and waited for it to open. The second group of customers lined up at 11:38, and then one after another... The restaurant opened at 11:55, so we ordered right away and were seated. Inside the store, there are two tables for four people, two tables for six people, and one seat that looks like a combination of two and four people, and only 5 to 6 groups can enter. So customers who arrived at 12 o'clock had to line up outside... The menu only includes gyoza and gyoza set meals. You can choose between 16 and 20 dumplings, but it seems like you can't order specific quantities. I was the first person to order, and the gyoza was brought to me at 12:18, as they were grilled after I ordered. It's been about 20 minutes since I ordered. At that time, only the second group of customers were served at the same time, and not yet for the third and subsequent groups. The vegetable-filled dumplings are about 4cm x 6cm x 4cm in size, and the skin is thick (about twice as thick as regular dumplings?) and fried to a crispy texture. There is not much garlic taste. It has a gentle taste with the sweetness of vegetables. About 10 minutes after I started eating, the crispy skin started to soften a little, so if you want to feel the crispy texture, it's better to eat at the restaurant, even if you have to wait in line. I finished eating in about 20 minutes and left the restaurant around 12:40. At this time, the second group also left the store. People who lined up at the store at 12:00 can finally enter the store around 12:45. Then you order and have it grilled, so you won't be able to eat until after 1pm. If you come to the store at the wrong time, you will have to wait for a very long time. The sauce for the gyoza was average, not particularly good or bad. There were no particular measures taken against the coronavirus.

They look the same. However, the taste was different from my memory, which was disappointing. Was it because my expectations were too high? Has my tongue become fat? Could it be that the general was not feeling well that day? I want to get revenge someday! The parking space in front of the store was narrow, so I parked my car in a nearby time parking lot. It used to be at the intersection of the cavalry range. The current location is difficult to find no matter when you go. If you walk along the road in front of the main gate of Kagoshima University towards the horse shooting range, it will be on your left. The parking lot is small, so I recommend using a nearby coin parking lot. When I went (July 2021), they had a pre-payment system, so I paid first and took a seat while waiting. Kagoshima's Howa Gyoza is very well grilled and is even more delicious than Takeo's Howa Gyoza from Kyushu. I think the shop owner's skills are very good. Even if you have only been to Takeo, I would like you to go to Howa Gyoza in Kagoshima. My concerns are that my father, who runs the store, often takes short notice due to his whims (I can't tell you how many times I cried after traveling all the way to do this...), and how long he will continue to run the store. (It's already been 30 years since I started going there.) Please continue to make delicious Hwa Gyoza! ! !

(Translated by Google) I can't believe I can taste the taste of the restaurant introduced on TV in Kagoshima... I went expecting a long line, but I got in easily. It might be relatively empty on Sunday afternoon. Be careful not to get burned as it is extremely hot! [Gyoza set meal] Order and prepay for 8 pieces (¥900 including tax) at the cash register right after entering. There is also a 16-piece version of the gyoza set meal. I was satisfied with the set of ○Gyoza, ○Rice, ○Miso soup, and ○Spices. While we were eating, many customers were also coming to the store for take-out food. It seems to be popular. Strategy points ①About the best time to eat gyoza I think it's hard to appreciate the taste of gyoza when they're just delivered because they're too hot, so I think it's best to let them cool down just a little bit. Just for reference, it's personal preference... ②About the tabletop seasoning set The steel bottle is chili oil. The sauce for the gyoza comes in a normal soy sauce jug. Blend vinegar to your liking. I mistook the bottle of chili oil for gyoza sauce and poured a large amount onto my plate. The gyoza sauce ended up floating in a sea of chili oil, and I made the mistake of not getting the gyoza sauce at all. *Reflection: Feel free to ask questions if you don't understand something.

They offer a lot of choices of ramen. The staff are friendly. I ordered Korean ramen and 100% spicy. One of the best. For locals they offer point card, once you accumulate 20points you can have 1000¥ discount:-) enjoy!

The shoyu ramen was excellent, very rich and tasty. The gyoza as well. One point reduction for cleanliness; One glass smelled like old dishwashing water...
