Garden

Historical landmark
Sengan-en is a historic Japanese garden and former residence of a feudal lord, showcasing traditional design and stunning volcano views. The garden was created over 300 years ago by the Shimadzu clan, incorporating the surrounding landscape into its layout. Visitors can explore bamboo groves, a scenic waterfall, and a serene pond. This picturesque setting was once used for famous poem-composing garden parties hosted by the Shimadzu family.
Truly worth visiting of you visit Kagoshima. A magnificent historical site with the majestic view of Sakurajima and breathtakingly beautiful Japanese garden. You might also see a wedding couple in Japanese traditional wedding dress too.
Subphanida K — Google review
Not without reason this place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sen-Gan Garden is a vast, beautiful, elongated complex made up of several smaller sections. It is a large and impressive estate with a perfect view of the Sakurajima volcano. On a sunny day with pleasant, not too hot weather, it is absolutely worth visiting. The garden offers a rich variety of nature, harmoniously combined with water, stone, earth, and living creatures. There are also charming little souvenir shops. Some parts look very new and fresh, while others show how nature has left its mark, with moss covering entire areas. This contrast creates a wonderful interplay between the natural and the cultivated. For anyone who can appreciate nature even a little, this is a truly beautiful and highly recommended place to visit.

Sengan-en is a 50,000-square-meter Japanese garden in Kagoshima, Japan, originally built in 1658 by the Shimadzu family. The garden is famous for its "borrowed scenery" (shakkei) design, which uses the active Sakurajima volcano as a natural "hill" and Kinko Bay as a "pond". The site includes the historic Iso Residence, which visitors can tour, the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, and various scenic areas with seasonal plants and historical elements. It is also a component of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Garden and architecture Borrowed Scenery: Sengan-en is a prime example of the "borrowed scenery" garden technique, where the surrounding landscape is incorporated as part of the garden's design. Main Features: The garden uses Sakurajima volcano as a natural background and Kinko Bay as a large pond, creating a spectacular, expansive view. Iso Residence: The historic villa was the main residence of the Shimadzu family and is open to the public. Inside, visitors can see beautiful decorations and enjoy the same views the family once did. Historical Elements: The garden features historical elements, such as the Tin Gate (Suzumon) and the first gas-powered lanterns in Japan, which were installed in 1857. Museum and cultural experience Shoko Shuseikan Museum: Located on the grounds, the museum showcases the history of the Shimadzu family and their cultural assets, which helped designate the area as a World Heritage Site. Cultural Events: The garden hosts various traditional Japanese culture events and activities, sometimes including opportunities to try on Japanese armor. Unique Shrines: Visitors can find the Nekogami Jinja Cat Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the cats the Shimadzu family brought back from Korea, with a nearby shop selling cat-themed goods. Visiting Sengan-en Location: Sengan-en is located north of downtown Kagoshima, Japan. Getting There: It is accessible by public transport, such as the Kagoshima City View bus. Time to Spend: You can spend a few hours or a full half-day exploring the gardens, mansion, and museum. Note: do not take selfies or wefies photos inside the main house

A truly lovely location. The gardens are very large and represent an excellent example of sub-tropical Japanese gardening. The house has excellent signage in English and Japanese, telling the history of this former samurai estate and the home of the current Emperor's great-grandmother.
Dan P — Google review
Visited in mid-July 2025 This is no ordinary manicured former feudal gardens mostly due to its unique background history. At the end of Edo period, the leaders of Shimazu clan who ruled the Satsuma Domain and own the plot of land that would be the complex itself decided to embark on some form of proto-industrialization to catch up with the Western world. They chose their own land at the edge of then-city limits of Kagoshima so that they could experiment whatever they wanted right under their noses. Some of the notable experiments they did were construction of blast furnaces, tinted glass production, and small dam and hydropower turbine to supply electricity to the Shimazu mansion nearby (which was one of the first buildings in the Satsuma Domain to use electricity back then). Nowadays the complex is open to the public, with sufficient amenities such as rest area, souvenir shops, restaurant, and cafes selling unique local dango rice cakes. Admission fee (which includes access to Shuseikan Museum next door) was a bit on expensive side - 1600 yen, but it's well worth it.
Lontongstroong — Google review
A lovely place which explores the history of the island and the role it played during the wars. It overlooks Sakurajima which was spectacular, and the tour of the main house was informative. We spent about 90 minutes walking the grounds and taking in the sights of the area – quiet, but also not isolated vibes.
Jonathan C — Google review
Wonderful visit. I spent about 2 hours on site simply walking around and enjoying the sights. It's a must do if you're in Kagoshima.
Fanelle — Google review
Really beautiful places worth visiting. You will learn a lot about the history of the prefecture in general and on Kagoshima in the history of Japan. The garden is beautiful, and is worth exploring. The royal house in the middle will dive you into a traditional Japanese moment. There are also a lot of gift shops with food/drinks of the region but also very beautiful crafts. If you have the chance to stop at the restaurant and/or the coffee shop you can admire Sakura-Jima with a traditional and local drink/food.

Shiroyama Park Observation Deck

Observation deck
Hiking area
Perched atop Shiroyama Park, the Observation Deck provides breathtaking panoramic views of Kagoshima city and its bay, as well as the active Sakurajima volcano. This popular spot is particularly enchanting after sunset when the city lights create a soothing ambiance. Accessible via the Kagoshima City View bus or by taxi, it's also within walking distance from the city center. The deck offers a picturesque vantage point to admire the natural beauty and urban landscape of Kagoshima.
The best observation deck in Kagoshima provides a free and direct view of Sakurajima. You can easily access it by car, bus or just by foot to enjoy the view at different timing. However, be ready to share the place with regular tour groups.
Terry C — Google review
A very nice view on the city and nearby volcano. It depends on the weather, so pick a sunny day rather. Approachable by bus, there is a possibility to return to the city by walk at the opposite side of the hill, using a 15-minute stairs path downhill.
GOLA G — Google review
Visited in mid-July 2025 Kagoshima has one of the most unusual and stunning sceneries among major Japanese cities, and there's no better way to enjoy the view atop the Shiroyama hill. The location is accessible by a tourist bus running loop in and around the downtown. However, I chose the slightly harder way by taking the stairs and hiking course from the base of the cliff next to Terukuni Shrine. Since it was during a weekday, the location was pretty deserted. This includes the small shopping area nearby (next to the car park and bus stop). It's a joy to enjoy the quaintness of the place and the crisp air a bit way from hustle and bustle below.
Lontongstroong — Google review
If you enjoy sightseeing, this is pretty much the way to go in Kagoshima. I love the history behind Saigo Takamori all around, the gentle breeze and sound of wildlife. There's a couple ways up Shiroyama, but I like the trek up the stairs through the back. The walk has a lot of shade, solid handrails, relatively safe. The actual top is a bit deserted but theres a few souvenir shops, ice cream shops, a park.
Andra C — Google review
I visited Shiroyama Park Observatory with my family, and it was absolutely amazing! The view from the top is breathtaking — you can see the entire city and surrounding nature all in one beautiful panorama. It’s a peaceful, refreshing spot that makes you appreciate how stunning Japan’s landscapes can be. The air feels clean, and the atmosphere is calm, making it a perfect place for families, couples, or anyone who just wants to relax and enjoy a scenic moment. We took lots of photos and spent quite a while just soaking in the view. Definitely one of the best spots for sightseeing and family travel. Highly recommended!

amazing view of Sakuramaji together with Kagoshima city😍 even met a cat there! Has seat, bathroom, rubbish bin, store, nice relaxing place. City viewing bus stop is nearby too, short walk only.
Guapi G — Google review
beautiful view down to the coast of sakurajima and kagoshima and of course up to the crater peak of the volcano. sunset view is also spectacular, all tho the last bus down is around 5pm, just before the sunset. however i walked up and down by myself, so it didn’t matter. one way takes about 1.5h. the observatory deck provides a small shop with beverages and souvenirs. an indoor area is available in case it’s windy. toilet and smoking area are also available.

The Shiroyama Park Observation Deck, located in Kagoshima, Japan, is a popular scenic spot offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, Kagoshima Bay, and the imposing Sakurajima volcano. Perched on Mount Shiroyama, the deck is surrounded by lush greenery, creating a peaceful ambiance. Visitors can enjoy stunning sunrises, sunsets, or simply admire the ever-changing face of Sakurajima, often shrouded in mist or emitting volcanic smoke. The observation deck is equipped with railings and seating, making it a great spot to relax while taking in the sights. On clear days, you can see as far as Kinko Bay and the surrounding islands. The park itself is steeped in history, as it was a key site during the Satsuma Rebellion. Visitors often enjoy strolling through the trails leading to the deck, which are lined with seasonal flowers and shaded by trees.

The Statue of Saigo Takamori is an 8-meter-tall monument honoring the iconic 19th-century general and leader of the Meiji Restoration. Saigo Takamori, often referred to as the last samurai, was a famous retainer of the Shimadzu clan. Born in Kagoshima, he quickly gained attention and became one of Lord Shimadzu Nariakira's trusted attendants.

Meiji ishin hero. No blood transition from samurai government to democratic government. There are Saigo sam's statue in Tokyo too. Photo area is a plus! (With a dog!) Get bus pass to visit. Shimazu clans (Kagoshima castle) spots are all walking distance from here. You can take tour from visitor's center next to Saigo San statue.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Kagoshima City Aquarium, also known as Suizoku-Kan Ioworld, is a popular attraction located near downtown and next to the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. The aquarium showcases a diverse range of marine life native to Kagoshima Prefecture, including stingrays, bluefin tuna, Japanese anchovy, a whale shark, squid, octopuses, and the Japanese giant crab. Visitors can also enjoy dolphin shows and feedings during their visit.
Place has an unassuming look from the outside but the experience is extremely cool and fun. Tickets were ¥1200 with the CUTE pass, ¥1500 without, and you can pay via credit card.
Ly L — Google review
After visiting Sakurajima island I visited the aquarium and enjoyed seeing so many interesting marine species. It was a very family friendly environment especially the dolphin show. Though the seals looked thoroughly bored 🦭🦭
Marion H — Google review
The Kagoshima Aquarium has a charming retro feel and is generally well maintained. One of the highlights is the view that greets you when the escalator leads straight into the center of the main tank. It’s a spectacular sight, though it might have been even more impactful if revealed later in the visit, as in the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. The main tank itself is beautiful, featuring a smaller whale shark, several rays, and a variety of other fish. Beyond that, there are plenty of other exhibits showcasing fish, crustaceans, and jellyfish. The layout can feel a bit like a maze, with elevators connecting the different floors, which adds a sense of exploration. There’s even a dolphin show to enjoy. Overall, it’s a great aquarium and a worthwhile stop when visiting Kagoshima. The location is stunning, right by the sea with a view of the volcano in the background. Compared to the Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa, Kagoshima’s feels a bit expensive since the ticket prices are similar but Okinawa offers much more, especially its enormous main tank (about five times larger). Still, Kagoshima’s aquarium has its own unique atmosphere and likely fewer visitors, which makes for a more relaxed experience.
Nik — Google review
Entrance more expensive compared to regular museums. We caught the shark feeding time. The fish and ocean creatures are beautiful to watch. When you enter , check the time of each performance on the flyer so that you can attend.
SVC — Google review
Loved this aquarium. Great displays and habitats. The whale shark was the main draw for me. They waste no time in showing you that as it is the first thing you see. Awesome. Dolphins outside breaching the water and mesmerizing jelly fish tanks. Put this on yoir to do list in Kagoshima.
Scott B — Google review
I visited Kagoshima City Aquarium, and it was truly a fantastic place. I saw many kinds of fish and even dolphins. From the 4th floor, there was a beautiful view of the active volcano, Sakurajima. I highly recommend visiting-it’s definitely worth enjoying!
Pradeep D — Google review
Aquarium was great, however only one small and relatively slow lift provides access to all floors for strollers and anyone with accessibility requirements.
David J — Google review
So happy we came just in time to watch the dolphin show! I absolutely loved it!! Maybe the aquarium is not that big but it has a nice vibe, and it is immaculately clean so that the glass looks invisible. It was a very pleasant experience. I'd go there again just for dolphins ^^

Nestled at an impressive 373 meters above sea level on the North Peak of Sakurajima, the Yunohira Observation Deck stands as the highest publicly accessible vantage point on this iconic volcano. Visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views that encompass the rugged lava fields, lush wooded slopes of Mount Sakurajima, and the sparkling expanse of Kagoshima Bay. On clear days, you can soak in unobstructed sights stretching across Kinko Bay and Kagoshima City.
Nice closer view of the volcano, observation deck up stairs provide panoramic views. The place is not crowded, but the bus station and the bus are crowded
Guapi G — Google review
A very good observation deck offering beautiful views of the volcano and its surrounding landscape. This spot provides a close look at Mount Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, which has had frequent eruptions throughout history. Today, the volcano remains active, with small eruptions regularly visible from the deck. The site is well maintained, with clear viewpoints and information about the volcano’s history. A must visit for those interested in nature, geology, or simply enjoying a stunning panoramic view. Enjoy 😎
Ryan G — Google review
Another great viewpoint to see Sakurajima - believe this is the closest you can get to it at the moment. If you climb to the second floor of the building, there is a huge photo of the crater on the floor. There is a small carpark at the top if you cannot climb stairs, but most would park at the carpark located below the stairs.
Steven L — Google review
Best spot on the island to see Sakurajima. The volcano was extremely active so we were able to see big plumes. Unfortunately because of rain visibility was limited
Neeka F — Google review
I just wished it was a bit closer to the action. Who hasn’t dreamed of walking through those dramatic clouds of smoke and steam? Still, it’s a beautiful and unforgettable spot, and here’s a sweet surprise: there’s a local cat who actually lives at the observation deck! Visitors are even welcome to feed him, and he’s become a bit of a star among those who stop by.
Jordy S — Google review
The view from the Yunohira observation point (bus stop 11 on the loop bus) is great! The tower has information in English and Japanese about the volcano’s history. There are toilets, and a gift shop. I recommend the local craft chuhai. On busy days, you may want to line up early for the next bus, though it’s only a 15-minute ride from there back to the Port.
Sarah H — Google review
Closest observatory point you can get to observe Sakurajima active volcano. Take a walk through the barren beauty of the lava areas to experience and imagine the intensity and power of past volcanic eruptions. Despite all these past, more than 5000 people are living at the foot of Sakurajima Mount as the volcanic areas are extremely rich soil which grows the best white radish (turnips) & fruits in Japan. Wonder why is it named as Sakurajimi? From its appearance like a cherry tree in bloom, when from a volcanic eruption, hot rock rains down onto the slopes, lighting up the island volcano. Location is about 4 km from central Kagoshima City and a 15-minute ferry ride from the downtown area.

Jambo Mochi Shop offers a local delicacy called Jambo mochi, which are rice cakes skewered on sticks and coated with sweet soy, miso, or kokuto caramel sauce. The shop's name originates from a mispronunciation of the Chinese word for 'two.' Customers can enjoy the mochi with three different sauces: soy sauce, soybean paste, and soybean powder with black sugar.
Dango was very delicious. There were a total of three sauces: 1 soy sauce, 2 soybean paste, 3 soybean powder and black sugar. The harmony with the rice cake was good. I also enjoyed the hot green tea. Eating inside a traditional Japanese-style building made it even more special. I recommend it.

Normally, you have to pay an additional fee (550 yen per person) for a window seat, but they kindly let me sit there because there was a seat available. Every dish was delicious and the names of each dish were so stylish that unfortunately I can't remember most of them😅 I especially liked the second dish, the pumpkin soup‼︎To be honest, I wanted to have a second serving. I want to convey how impressed I was, but I'm not sure I can express how wonderful it was with my limited vocabulary😭 Not only was the food delicious, but the staff were very attentive and I had a wonderful time✨ It's no wonder there were so many customers even on weekdays. Kurokatsutei Kurobe Tenmonkan

Tonkatsu restaurant
Kurokatsutei is a popular spot known for its delicious fried black pork Tonkatsu made from carefully selected Satsuma black pork cutlets. The pork is aged slowly to enhance its sweetness and then fried with specially chosen bread crumbs, resulting in a delectable dish. In addition to the signature Tonkatsu, the menu also features options such as Momo katsu set, which consists of thinly sliced meat, and a classic Pork loin cutlet set.
We arrived in Kagoshima late in the evening and, naturally, went hunting for a place to try the city’s famed pork. Kurokatsutei in Tenmonkan was our pick for dinner — and it absolutely hit the spot. Despite the hour, we were seated pretty quickly. The place had a relaxed, homely feel, perfect for winding down after a long day. We went straight for the signature tonkatsu — and it didn’t disappoint. The pork cutlet was fried to crispy perfection with a light breadcrumb coating, while the meat inside was juicy and full of flavor. The tangy tonkatsu sauce paired so well with the richness of the pork — it really lifted the whole dish. We also ordered the grilled meat skewers, and those were a pleasant surprise. Charred just right and seasoned to bring out the natural sweetness of the pork, they added a nice contrast to the fried dishes. If you’re in Kagoshima and craving pork done right — both fried and grilled — this place is definitely worth a stop.
Crumpled N — Google review
We visited this restaurant around 7-8 PM and were seated immediately without any wait. We ordered a fried meat platter and a pork skewer platter, which turned out to be excellent choices. The fried shrimp was particularly delicious, standing out as a highlight of the meal. The pork cutlet was impressively juicy and flavorful. From the skewer platter, the pork meat skewers were aromatic and tasty, while the pork intestine skewers were also a delightful surprise. The only item that didn't quite meet our preferences was the pork liver skewer. We found the liver slices a bit too thick for our liking. Overall, it was a satisfying dining experience with a variety of well-prepared meat dishes. The restaurant offered a pleasant atmosphere with no waiting time during the evening hours. It's a great spot for meat lovers looking for a diverse selection of fried and grilled options.

Very big size lunch set. 2 adults 2 kids, recommended 3 set lunch menu. Tastes very good and not pricy at all. Only cost 7000 yen

I went there alone in late July around 6pm. The staff sat me down right away and were really friendly, even though I barely speak Japanese. It wasn't a problem though. I just pointed at what I wanted on the menu. I got a set with two black pork cutlets that came out super fast. The outside was really crispy but the pork inside was so tender. It wasn't greasy at all and didn't have that gross oily taste you sometimes get. It was especially good with just salt. You could really taste how different this pork was from regular pork. The sesame grinding thing was pretty fun too, and it goes really well with the pork. The pork roll was incredible. It was tender and a little sweet, and you could really taste the natural pork flavor.

must visit place for their kurobuta meat! Kagoshima is well-known for their Kurobuta and I had to try it. I came across this place via online search and decided to make reservation. I went for lunch on weekdays at 11:30am and there was no queue, however when I left (around 1230pm) there were people waiting for tables. It is within a walkable distance from Tenmonkan area. I ordered the Kurokatsu-Tei set, which comes rice, cabbages, and soup. During lunch, rice and cabbage is refillable. If you would like more soup, there will be a small extra charge. I also recommend you to try their minced kurobuta fried. You must eat it while it’s hot. The meat is crispy outside yet very juicy inside. Overall, I had a great meal!

Ordered the loin cutlet set meal (黒豚ロースカツ定食). There was a lot of variety and sides. The pork cutlet was really delicious and the tonjiru also tasted really good. The service was also pretty fast. It took about 10 mins for 5 teishokus to come out.

To simply put it, we love pork, this place can’t be missed if you are in Kagoshima, staff were friendly, we had the deep fried version, the teppanyaki version and shabu shabu version. Honestly one of the best pork places we ever been to, can’t be happier

similar to Kurobuta, this lunch set is a good deal? And the rice so yummy, I enjoy it so much I ask for another bowl of rice. The combination set is yummy and they provide 5 different sauces to pair with. I enjoy it very much and so filling

Japanese regional restaurant
Kumasotei is a popular Japanese restaurant known for its traditional and locally focused cuisine, particularly its specialty in shabu-shabu dishes. The unassuming eatery offers a welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff and English-translated menus. Guests can enjoy authentic Japanese dishes such as kurobuta shabu-shabu, tonkotsu, Satsuma-age, and various seafood items.
Definitely book ahead at this place as they don't take walk-ins, but the reservation process is a breeze. Caught in the rain and running late, I was relieved they accommodated my last-minute rescheduling. The meal? Absolutely no regrets. Opted for the lunch set - grilled beef, kibihago sashimi, and satsuma-age - and each dish was a knockout. It was all so delicious, I devoured it before I even thought to snap a picture of the whole display! Had my eye on the famed black pig pork, but after a pork-heavy week, I leaned towards beef, which didn't disappoint. Still, the black pig shabushabu is on my list for next time! And the cherry on top? A complimentary beer, a delightful surprise I only noticed when it wasn't on the bill. A huge thank you to the staff for that! This place is a must-visit in Kagoshima, earning a solid 5 stars from me. Can't wait for my next visit to dive into more of their culinary delights!

Great food with reasonably priced set meals. Do expect a more-than-usual number of tourists since the restaurant is featured in many guides. I had the black-pork tonkatsu which was very tasty - crispy on the outside but succulent within.

Ordered two different sets to share, one main with shabushabu pork and one with steak cooked on a hot iron pan. (Forgot to take photo). Besides eating the food we were also eating the culture and history and pride of the locals. Ate sakezushi the first time, really interesting.

slightly overrated in my opinion. the pork shabu shabu...., it's as good as the porks that i could buy from donki. love the stew pork and satsuma beef steak although a tab costly.

Good Japanese fine dining experience As they specially assigned a waiter (Phil) who know English well. He help to explain everything we ordering. Very service oriented but the food a bit on the steep side and not that interesting .

Decent local Satsuma meal set with food in small dishes. My husband and I ordered a 5000 yen set that includes black pork shabushabu (japanese hot pot) and a 3000 yen set. It was plenty for two and they were delicious! I especially liked the broiled pork - it melted in your mouth; and the SatsumaAge ( Satsuma fried fish cakes). All other small dishes were very good. The pictures are only a part of the meal.

It was my first meal when I arrived kagoshima for its served authentic local cuisine and its taste didn't fail us! I went there in lunch and the set meal was in a decent portion and not pricey! They have English menu and the staff was friendly. Highly recommended!

Great traditional satsuma cuisine. Very welcoming to foreigners and the have a English menu. Take your time and enjoy a full course of savory traditional cuisine. However, be prepare to be challenged on the different dishes with the tastes and the wide variety of ingredients.
