The freshly baked scones were delicious!! Breakfast this morning was a buffet affair and again, very tasty. The informal atmosphere was perfectly balanced - friendly but not too casual - and enhanced by Jane, the owner, chatting with each group of guests in turn about their stay and the hotel. Finally, a word about the Napery - a collection of over 300 linen napkins from the hotel, which various guests have decorated with original designs over the years. When we arrived we had a friendly welcome from the front desk and we were then shown around the basement rooms. So much to see, a very interesting time warp with so many fascinating features. The lift was such a great centerpiece. The upper floors and napkin gallery was so lovely, many unique pieces. We really enjoyed walking around. Friendly efficient staff on the front desk who explained what lunch options there were and what else one could enjoy there. My first time in Margate and had a look around all the galleries including the Tate, however the Carl Freedman Gallery is by far the best art gallery in town. On our way to the gallery we found Margate harbour entirely drained of sea water, I've never seen it like that before. We walked across it and amongst the small boats. Once in the gallery we spotted the iron man, finished looking around and went to investigate. This stunning artwork is well worth a closer look. The many years of being submerged and revealed twice a day have created a beautiful patina across his surface. Thick layers of barnacles and small whisps of seaweed cover him head to toe. The predictions that boats would strike him, or vandles move him have not materialised. It's just stunning as it is. It says don't walk up to him, but of course we ignored those over cautious signs.
