We’ve been coming here for many years, but right now it’s enjoying a real surge in popularity thanks to its appearance in Netflix’s The Roses starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. On a sunny day we had to wait a little while, but eventually found a table with a beautiful sea view – dogs welcome everywhere too, which we love. During our three-week holiday we ate here three times: the afternoon barbecue twice and the Po’boy once. All the food was delicious – the peppered steaks were a bit tough and heavy on the spice rub, but on another visit we had the prawns which were, as always, fantastic. On that occasion our order was forgotten, and although the chef had already gone off shift, he ran back through the pouring rain to cook it fresh for us – above and beyond! Prices are on the higher side, so don’t expect a bargain, but this is very much part of the holiday experience – the food, the view, the lively atmosphere, and even the fun nods to The Roses with a cute fairground-style board where you can pop your head through for a photo. Multiple sittings, so look lively on the eating front, we just about managed it. Ordered the (Hot) Fruits de Mer for 2, should you decide the same, you do NOT need to order anything else ! Ambiance and Lighting not quite right, front of the bar features what appears to be industrial white lights, whilst the rear of the bar sits in virtual darkness. Only food disappointment was the Bread, if I was a baker visiting a seafood and shellfish cathedral, I would be shocked that the restaurant valued their fresh food, but didn’t value ‘real’ bread. If you want to test if your bread is bread, squash the open crumb with your thumb or forefinger, if the indent bounces back, it’s real bread, if your finger indent remains it’s not a good bread. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and everything you’d hope for from a charming coastal pub. Special shoutout to the amazing staff – Claudia, Erin, and Ewen – who went above and beyond to make our visit memorable. Claudia was incredibly warm and attentive, Erin had a great sense of humour and made sure everything ran smoothly, and Ewen’s friendly service and local knowledge really added to the experience. We hadn’t made a reservation and Salcombe was very busy but the staff at the Victoria couldn’t have been more friendly throughout. Nothing was too much trouble. The bar staff were very helpful and even brought our drinks over to our table so I could sit down with my Mother. Our waitress was so helpful too. It was absolutely perfect and we couldn't be more grateful. All staff were very helpful, kind and attentive. Food was plentiful and excellent. We were also able to have a bar just for ourselves in the beer garden and able to play our own music. It is also worth mentioning this beer garden in more detail as from the front you wouldn't know. It extends back and upwards with lots of seating both outside and undercover with amazing views of Salcombe harbour. Also has a great play area for kids that a lot of our guests found very handy. If you are thinking of having a function in Salcombe, look no further than Victoria Inn. It is superb.

We have tried most, if not all of their competition in Town and there is no other that can hold a candle to them for; the quality of the service, the food and the value for money. And by the way, the Victoria also provides the best value on the price of their beers, wines and other drinks. My family had gone “out” for a treat, we were not offered drinks, we would have bought more, we were ignored, we wanted desert but were left. Our meal wasn’t checked & plates not cleared. The waitress coming over when my husband was paying could have apologised for leaving us instead of asking if everything was ok, when it clearly wasn’t. I usually enjoy my meals at Capn Jaspers, but with it closed for refurbishment, I decided to try this place instead. When we arrived the Braai guy was super popular, but the team made every effort to look after us whilst we waited. The food felt innovative and the flavours were lovely and some quite unusual, in a good way! Definitely a nice change to standard British pub/restaurant food. For the cost of £22-34 price of main, cheapest being £22 I was disappointed with the portion size. Food was yummy though. Again for the starters £13-£20 for a starter and portion sizes were small, you couldn’t share them. An okay selection of wine. The views looked beautiful, but I guess that’s what you are paying for if you are out on the deck, we were inside so didn’t take in the views. Also to mention the fish and chips was lovely - not in too over powering batter! Bathrooms need updating as rather dirty and old. The distillery is open for all to see at one end of a bright and airy open-plan bar area with feels like a boathouse overlooking the glistening estuary. All staff are welcoming, knowledgeable and generous. The gin school especially was both fascinating and exciting, teaching you so much more than your regular distillery tour. You have some upfront learning about gin making in the main distillery and then you are brought to apply your learning practically whilst making your own gin with your own set of botanicals in your own dedicated copper still. You then bottle, name, label and package your own gin with enough to have a gin & tonic or two with your own creation at the bar. Very, very well done - will absolutely be back.

Tom looked after us so well on both visits. There was no paper menu offered and reading from the chalk signs was a bit confusing and difficult. There is also a selection of packaged food items to buy, such as coffee and other deli type goods. We didn’t pick anything up on our visit though. The staff were very friendly, if slightly slow to serve / bring items to the table. Everything looked very clean and there is a good amount of seating here. There is also a lovely outdoor area, with estuary views. This would be lovely in the summer.

As a couple we were looking for somewhere to eat last minute and we came across this place passing by. It seemed a fairly busy inside but luckily we managed to get a table. So glad we did. As the food was amazing and the service was top notch. I can’t believe to see why some people here so negatively rated this Sea Monkey tapas bar. It’s a hidden gem to my liking! We had 5 tapas dishes which were so delicious. The portion sizes were good and the price was reasonable for the food quality you were getting. If you want a really cheap night out then this is not for you, you definitely get what you pay for here. The restaurant is tucked away and can be difficult to find unless you know its there. There is a nice ambience inside with a great music and I would definitely return if we are coming back to the Salcombe next time. I’d recommend the yummy prawns, mackerel and battered fried vegetables to start with, however there are many more delicious dishes to tantalise your taste buds in their menus.

I had Skate wing but sadly it was over cooked and stringy. My friend had the prawn cocktail but said the prawns had no flavour and were probably frozen previously. Another friend had the Mediterranean salad and said it was inedible! The pods themselves are fun and the view over the sea is fabulous, but if you're looking for great food, there are other much better places nearby in our experience. Having said that, some friends who came at the beginning of August raved about the food, so maybe as the season is coming to an end, we were just unlucky.

We’re regular visitors to the area but this was our first time staying at the hotel itself – and overall, it didn’t disappoint. The location is unbeatable, right on the beach, and the interior decor is beautifully done – stylish, coastal, and inviting. We were especially impressed with how dog-friendly the hotel is, and our room was lovely, although being on the top floor, it did get quite warm. The food throughout our stay was excellent, from breakfast through to dinner – fresh, well-cooked, and beautifully presented. There were a couple of small areas where service could be improved. Dinner service felt a little average, with some of the waiting staff needing to check in more proactively and a few tables served before us despite sitting us down before them. We also had a moment at the bar where a waiter (who seemed to be from the restaurant team) walked past without even an acknowledgment, which felt a little off. That said, the head waiter (a blonde gentleman) was absolutely fantastic – attentive, professional, and a real asset to the team. A small point, but a full-length mirror in a better location in the room would be appreciated – just a practical tweak. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would definitely recommend South Sands to others.
