Since then this place has been added to the Michelin guide so we decided to come back and try Sunday lunch. It was busy due to it being Easter, but was seated quickly. Some good options on the menu and a special on the board for the main which we opted for. Unfortunately the standard of food was quite disappointing this time around. My mackerel starter was overly smoked and dominated the flavour profile. The bread it was served on was dry and tasteless. Another starter was pigs cheek, which we had ordered before but this was very different-a slab of pork, fairly dry served with apple and crispy crackling. The lamb main was delicious, full of flavour, but the Guinea fowl special was slightly disappointed. It was due to come with asparagus and bacon, both were missing from the dish. I'm conscious that 'intelligent' is an odd word to use in a review like this but I got the sense when conversing with the staff, particularly our waitress, that they actually listen when you talk to them and any response, whether to a request or general chatter, is considered and smart. Its also very well presented though this is the kind of place where the chips come in a small metal faux frying basket, custard in a miniature churn and so on. However the two people I was with were more comfortable in the bar area to eat our meal and do we moved. When we were there we had to go to the bar to order food which was no problem. We all found this to be extremely insulting as this had not happened to anyone around us and we believe they were judging us based on the fact we were 3 young men. Food and drink choice were great with lots of hyperlocal produce. Lots of staff on the floor but could never get the attention of anyone as they were all gathered by the tills. Staff were polite but did not seem to have the right training. We were given an old menu so we ordered the lamb main and got given the lamb starter. If the staff member had noticed this when we ordered then it would have avoided the issue of the wrong dish being served. We then had to wait for a new main course for my husband which didn't come until after I'd finished my food. Staff could have managed this better and offered for both dishes to come out at the same time or for him to have the starter whilst he was waiting. Condiments were also not offered though they did have a good selection of Stokes sauces. Would definitely visit again though as the farm shop and outdoor area were nice too.

If I could give a 0 score I would. My partner and I went for a meal on a Saturday evening. We booked online to make sure we had a table. It was like a 99p frozen pizza from Lidl! The staff were totally disinterested in their customers, one customer in the bar area even had to ring the pub to get them to take an order for drinks! Little to say that we will never go back and we'll tell everyone we know not to go there. Which is a shame because 10+years ago it was a lovely country pub. Not now. It's been run into the ground. At this rate there won't be a pub lift soon anyway. Cool, unwelcoming, disgusting! Avoid.

To be fair, the lasagne looked fine and tasted good. The Thrice Cooked Chips were thick, chunky, piping hot and tasty, but didn't lool as if they were triple cooked. When I went to the bar at the end of the meal to pay, there were no pleasantries like 'did you enjoy the meal?', 'was everything OK?', 'hope to see you again' etc, it was just 'are you paying by cash or card?' The whole place looked like it was in desperate need of some TLC and the staff just seemed to be completely indifferent to us being there. My partner regularly visited The Barley Mow some 10-15 years ago and said it used to be a very warm and welcoming country pub that was always heaving; it served fantastic food and you'd have to book weeks in advance just to get a table in the restaurant. Having had a meal there this evening, I can completely understand how...on a Saturday evening... there were just 2 of us eating in the restaurant! We definitely won't be going back.
