This is such a fun and beautiful trail! The trail starts out easy - gravel/small rocks, then transitions into sand for a while, then it becomes very rocky - mostly flat step-style rocks. I found the trail fairly easy to navigate but I could see it presenting challenges in certain areas if you're less experienced. The hike is about 2.4 miles but does seem a bit more tiring than expected with the various rock step elevations and requirement for watching your footing and balance at times.
Note, if hiking in the late afternoon (5pm or later during daylight savings), the trail will be in the shade for 80% of the hike.
Always hike safe and smart, bring excess water.

Cool trail. I didn’t use the main walking area through the canyon and instead took an early right turn to climb up to the top of the hill. This parking lot can fill quickly and there isn’t always the option of waiting for a spot to open as park officials may usher you to the next. Make sure you know where you’re wanting to go first.

Like many trails in this area, pic's won't do it justice. This trail is a gem.
More experienced hikers will rate this as "easy," but less avid hikers will find this to be "moderate" for sure. There's a fair amount of small elevation changes, so keep that in mind if you're used to a flat surface throughout your time on the trail.
Also, a few scrambles aren't a part of most people's nature hikes, but it's all worth the investment of time and effort. The views up close and vistas far away will make a great memory. Everything's well marked since this is one of the park's signature and most popular trails.
I visited when temp's where in the 60's (and it was really windy!) but I'm sure if you're visiting in summer temp's you've already read up on warnings about heat, hydration, etc.

Great experience! Started the hike about 8:30 am and took about 2.5 hours to complete. We saw lots of desert lizards on the trail, including a fierce looking little thing that mimicked a scorpion. Of course the petroglyphs were worth the hike, but the stars for us were the Bighorn Sheep and the Kit Fox, whose breakfast we interrupted.
The petroglyph trail takes you up a series of small, dry waterfalls that you need to crawl or climb up. It's not too challenging and the selfie background is pretty amazing. If you want an easier walk, the cowboy trail is the way to go. It will take you the "back way" to the petroglyphs. (The trail is well marked).
Do yourself a favor if you've never been here before and check in at the visitor contact center. The staff there was super helpful and knowledgeable about the trails.

Please be careful hiking this trail. Do not go alone at night or dawn/dusk. A mountain lion was stalking me about two miles in but thankfully backed off when I became aggressive. I tried reporting this behavior to the department of wildlife but the receptionist didn't seem interested. Black Mountain is the first mountain I ever climbed a few years ago but again, please prioritize your safety and respect the land.

Had an outstanding experience hiking the loop today. Spend about 2 hours, ~3 mile hike there total. We are novices from the Midwest so some points got our heart rates up, some mild climbing, definitely not ADA accessible, but brought water/snacks and took some shady breaks. Felt like a solid accomplishment for our group. Took lots of photos.
Extremely kind and helpful volunteers under a tent at the parking lot - no visitor center/etc but it didn’t matter. Some porta potties on site if needed.

Great hike, been there a few times but find new trails every time. I will say its clean most of the time but once or twice have picked up a few trash items. But the flowers bloom and the rock structures are beautiful. There are lots of places to lose footing so i would recommend very nice high top hiking boots! We bring our dog and he is very active outdoors, being said he knows his way around i wouldn't bring a dog who's not well footed. No shade unfortunately.

Beautiful area in Red Rock. Calico Hills is one of the first stops when you take the Scenic Loop from the Red Rock Visitor Center. You can just park your car and explore the hiking trail which is well marked. I definitely recommend to hike this trail for the best views. It's not very far until the next car stop (less than a mile) and you can always turn back the same way. When the sun is going down, you'll have beautiful light for pictures. If you're lucky you can also spot some (small and non-dangerous) wildlife.

I was here this morning. The weather was beautiful, we arrived at about 6:30 in the morning and it wasn't too crowded so there was plenty of parking. There's lots of trails that head off from this entrance. We did the Basin Trail, and I believe the Overlook Scramble. As someone new to desert hiking, they were pretty challenging at times, but overall, great. We ended the hike at the boardwalk, which was a welcome respite from walking on loose rocks that were threatening to shatter my ankles.

Great trail, stunning views from the start. Highly recommend getting here before sunrise. I did it on a morning in mid September. The parking was easy to find and the trail, is nicely visible until the last fourth, where the trail can blend in. But that's the beauty of this trail, it's hard to get lost. All trails says it has about 400 and some vertical feet to the grotto, with a 3.5 mile out and back. The rocks are not too bad to get over, but do watch the ground. Once you get to the area with more trees, that's when the path gets a little hard to distinguish. I went when there when there was no water flowing in the creek, but it is really neat to go and walk through the creek bed. Great place for stunning rock formations and just to get away from the city. Would love to come during the time when the creek is flowing.

It's been quite a while since I came to this park. I took my bike for a ride. I didn't know where should I go and where I can find the bicycle routes. So this is where I go. A little long trail that leads me toward the UNLV Sam Boyd Stadium. I suggest going to this park when the sun is setting down or the temperature lower in the 70s. When I rode my bike, the temperature was moderate, about approximately around 85⁰ to 90⁰. It was super hot!! Do not walk or ride your bike here if the temperature record reaches the 110s! Anyways, I enjoy my visit. My mom and dad walked here before. We even brought our dog for a walk. Like the other review I said in 2018, this park looks like a forest. There were quails, bullfrogs, roadrunners, and many wildlife you can find here. The croaking from the frogs, or toads I mean, can be heard. They are usually found in ponds, but never in my life I would encounter one. So keep an eye on them. Also, if necessary for your safety, beware of any strange activities or predators. There are no coyotes or mountain lions around this park, but be ready for anything. About the strange activities, there could be homeless people wandering around here camping. But I don't see anything bad. Just for your own safety to have a good time at the park here in Whitney, Nevada.

It took me three years before I visited here despite it being barely 15 mins from home. Glad I did though because it's a delight to visit with lots of parking, paved and unpaved trails, bathrooms, play areas for the kiddos, and even a visitor center. Sure there's not a lot of shade in quite a lot of the trails but the ones in the middle do and there's running water, wildlife, and some nice views.

From the parking coordinates, walk to the powerline crossing bridge, walk a short distance up the bike trail, onto the gravel/rock trail on your right-hand side. If you bring dogs, I recommend they wear shoes. The beginning of the trail is deceiving, but it becomes very rocky. The trail begins wide, but as you ascend the mountain side, it becomes very narrow (slightly more than 1 body width).
Once I made it to the mountains peak where the flag is located, I proceeded back the same route to return. The trail does loop around, but I heard the views aren't that great - mainly overlooking a construction site.
There is also a cave that you can't miss, right before the mountain ascend.

If you do bring an umbrella ☂️ and some water 💦 ! It is gorgeous and despite plenty of places there and Timeshares/resorts because so many people live there part time- it’s always so darn quiet. 🤫

Had a whole lot of fun here. It's western themed art the playground and there are so many things for kids to do. There's a swing at, sand box, rock climbing wall, see-saws, slides, a wagon to climb on, a tee-pee to get into, and a little zip line. Wonderful place to spend the whole day. Perfect walking path. Lots of shade at the park and around the path. Real grass with sprinklers, splash pad at the park. This park got it right. Slight elevation changes on the walking path but nothing crazy. I live in north las vegas and drove all the way here and it was worth every minute. Red Rock Canyon is a hiker's or any nature lover's dream!
We hired a driver to take us to Red Rock Canyon from Las Vegas and show around the area.
It was absolutely Breathtaking!
We drove all around, checked out some of the hiking trails and did a little climbing. (Not recommended) but had to.
The Rock formations were beautiful and layered in white and red rocks. We saw a lot of wild animals, donkeys, wild horses and a couple snakes while exploring. there are some roadside areas too for additional photo ops.
Definitely a beautiful place to check out. So worth a visit. Just beautiful!

The hike up wasn't as bad as I had expected. This is definitely not an easy hike due to the steepness (2000' gain in 2 miles) or the loose rocky trail, but I'm a 50-something clinically overweight specimen who made it up in 90 minutes and down in 40. I used hiking poles and I highly recommend them - they will greatly increase your confidence.
Regardless of the hike the views from the peak are unparalleled. I recommend you go to the top of the ridge behind the radio antennas where you can see all the way to Lake Mead to the east, and all the LV valley and Mt. Charleston to the west. If you hike a quarter mile more south you'll see views to the south with Lake Las Vegas, Boulder City, Henderson and more.

The three Lone Mountain parks are my local neighborhood parks, and I'm spoiled to have them. There's a 3 mile hike around the peak along the trailhead and a relatively short hike up the mountain to the lowest elevation portion of the peak where you'll find a bench to sit down, relax, and take photos before heading on up to the summit. Bring water, hiking shoes, gloves, and take it slow. It's a challenging hike. Definitely come check it out and stop by the adjacent equestrian & dog park where you'll also find a basketball court & a playground, and then a little farther down the street you'll find the Regional Park on Lone Mountain Rd. that has quite a few basketball courts, tennis courts, & huge grassy field to lay out and picnic. So beautiful, I love being from Lone Mountain! it's one of Vegas' best kept secrets.

1st time, went for a sunrise hike...5:45 am, trying to be up top by rise, didn't quite make it but still got the great view and got to the top!
So many options on trails to take, even a flatter trail all the way around the bottom of the peak!
A steady amount of people, so if anything single hiker you can still feel safe. Wear good treaded shoes, a lot of big rock to walk up but also a good amount of loose small rocks.

At the top it looks like they had several drilled in anchors for repelling down the west side!

Trail running is what I enjoy and this trail met my need. It starts as a paved trail but after .75 it goes to gravel. Packed gravel so don’t worry about loose gravel. Most of the trails I saw out there were single track to include some” only horse trails” but I ran them anyway. You could see Vegas from far away too. I imagine during the hotter months that this could be a punishing experience. Something to consider about this area is its proximity to the park meaning that the amount of people coming along this trail is fairly high unless you come here very early or very late, despite that, the closeness of modernity means that bathrooms are in the park waiting for you should you need it.

We got up early and hiked this mountain at sunrise. Only a handful of people there and not hot yet. The trail is well-defined in some places and a straight up rock scramble in others, but it’s fun and short. 500+ feet of elevation gain in about .6 miles so take your time if you need to! I came, I saw, I conquered (barely). This had to be the most difficult 4.4 mile I’ve ever done….or at least it felt that way to my somewhat out of shape 66 year old body. Like others said, this is a five star hike for the views, but a three star (at best) for trail conditions. I strongly recommend you wear good hiking boots/shoes and use hiking poles on this hike as the trail is incredibly rocky and very steep in places.

Hot!! But excellent hike....views are amazing. The history behind these tunnels is just incredible. Highly encourage being hydrated days prior.....and during! Sunscreen, etc....Especially if you go during the summer months. Expect to do at least 4 miles or more. I started at Lake Mead National Rec Area. Well maintained and easy desert exploration. Enjoyed the park office at the start of our hike and spent time at the Dam on the end. The trail deposits you at the top of the Hoover Dam parking garage. Flat spaces and beautiful vistas along the trail, easy walk, very little shade (the tunnels are pretty much the only shade). Would recommend to get out of Las Vegas and explore how gorgeous Nevada is!

Hi everyone, this is Nevada Laobai! Today I’m at the Historic Railroad Trail near the entrance of Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Boulder City, Nevada.
This trail was once a railroad, now transformed into a scenic hiking route. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Mead, pass through historic railway tunnels, and eventually reach the Hoover Dam power station.
The round trip is about 7 miles (12 km) and takes around 4 hours. Be sure to bring sun protection, plenty of water, and snacks. I recommend starting early in the morning to avoid the desert heat.
In my opinion, this is one of the most interesting and must-do hikes in Nevada!

I started this hiking trail from the Hoover Dam Parking Structure and end at the Lake Mead visitors center area. If you intend to go this route; the entrance to the trail is located on the 5th floor of the parking structure. The path is very wide like a service drive for cars. It is super sandy and after the hike your face will be covered with sand. The hike is very peaceful but the only shade you get is when you go through the 5 tunnels. Don’t forget your sunglasses, water, and sunscreen.

Short of a paved wide road, the walk was relatively easy. EXCEPT for the heat (which can make this walk deadly), and they could put in some more benches for the old old folks. This trail was absolutely amazing! It’s long though and only worth it if you get to the end. Round trip it was about 9miles (14,5km) according to my whoop.
The hike is a bit tough involving some rope climbing (6-7 times) and uneven surfaces. I recommend wearing non slippery shoes and gloves (mountin bike gloves or garden gloves).
Don’t forget bathing suit and towel for the hot springs in the end. They are warm enough to go for a swim even in December!

Def do this hike with LOTS of water.
The trail closes from May-Oct due to how hot it can get.
We went in late March and it hit 90+° and the hike up to car was hard!
The terrain is soft loose gravel (think cat litter) for the first part, then becomes really rocky and then you have to climb down 9 roped rocks before you hit the first hot spring and water falls.
You are decending into the canyon, so be aware the trip back is all up.
Warning: water at the springs is very warm/hot 🔥
But after a 2hr trek down it feels amazing.
So pack plenty of water, food, and bathing suit.
This was our most challenging hike to date, as we'd never done ropes on a hike before, also the heat made the return much more tiring.
We took about 4hrs to go in-out.
We did not go to the Colorado River at the very end, but chose to stop at the hot springs and eat lunch, relax and rest before having to hike back up it all.
In our opinion up the rock ropes was easier than down. Just remember to let your legs do most of the work, instead of upper body/arms. Legs are larger muscles and tire less quickly.
There are 9 ropes to repel down then back up.
All in all, we rated this a top ten of all our hikes thus far! 😍

I’m 39, my husband is 40. We did this hike with our 5 kids yesterday ages 6-15. It was amazing. The exact trail I was looking for. Gave every one of my kids a challenge, everyone got scrapes and bruises—minor—but then every single one of them came out feeling triumphant. It requires problem-solving, patience, and they had to work through fear and uncertainty, and best yet—they had to work together! It took us 5 hours.
I wasn’t originally planning on joining in on the hike and didn’t bring proper footwear. My shoes were completely worn smooth on the bottom, and I wouldn’t have made it through the obstacles without help, so I recommend good grippy shoes.
My 6 year old frustrates easily and is afraid of heights. I didn’t expect him to make it but by the end he was ahead of us scaling ropes by himself! Incredible experience.
And saw fun lizards and a mountain goat scramble down one side and up the other!!
We brought 4 liters and ran out towards the end, I wish we had brought more. We were exhausted at the end—the last 45 minutes back to the parking lot on the gravelly dusty trail in the heat after completing all the obstacles was a bit brutal.

A few comments almost talked me out of doing this trail. It's really not that hard!
The hike from the parking lot to the Colorado River took about 1hr 15 mins. I did not have proper hiking shoes with me as we flew here for a holiday; I wore vans. Yes, proper boots would have been nice but were not at all mandatory. Gloves are NOT necessary, either. Even if I was given some, I wouldn't choose to wear them.
The first half of the hike is a pretty basic gravel path. The second half gets fun with some rocks and ropes to assist you down. None of the ropes are very difficult. You obviously need some bare minimum upper body strength to support yourself, though. (Also, given the ropes and heat, it's not a good place to bring your dog). Near the bottom, the final 10 mins is following a wet creek bed, which requires some careful steps to avoid wet feet. I only saw two pools, one is quite large and the other is small. Neither was super warm, I'd guess high 90s or maybe 100F max. It's definitely warmer if you sit near the heat source. As a bonus a lot of the hike was in the shade due to being in a canyon for the majority of the hike.
Total round trip time was about 2hr 40 mins. Left the parking lot at 1030am, back to the car just after 1pm. Logged 10.7km and 350m elevation gain.

I got there around 8:30AM. Took about 3 hours to complete. Plan a little more time for your day so you can hang out by the water.
There are 7-9 rope assisted obstacles/climbs with rock scrambles throughout entire hike. Gravel isn’t too deep when walking through. There are a few “jumps” you can easily complete. Just use your upper body to push up and hop down/climb up.

Very cool trail near the Mt Charleston Lodge!
It's a fairly easy trail with a lot of switchbacks but the elevation makes it more of an easy moderate trail if you're not used to hiking at 8000+ft. The waterfall is nice and there are some nearby caves. Best time to hike is late April/early May.
Cathedral Rock is also a great run!
Enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery that's only about 45 min from Las Vegas!! :)

Great moderate trail! I’ve seen people do this hike in flip-flops, which I would not necessarily recommend 😂 I’ve also seen pretty young kids on this hike! You can break the hike up into 2 segments, part one is about an 8th of a mile and then the switchbacks begin for another mile or so.the switchbacks get a little steep.

We took our senior doggies for a short hike on Mary Jane Falls Trail. It was a beautiful sunny clear day. It was easy to find and parking was available since it was Friday. The upper parking was closed off. The Park is neat and clean. Thete was some snow on the trail and in the mountains. It was very easy for our doggies to maneuver and check out the different smells. We saw a few hikers enjoying the day. Its a great area to take awedome pictures.. There was no park attendant. The restrooms were closed. You need to bring your own water. We took doggy bags since none are provided. We will definitely explore the other trails.

I've always really liked this hike. Yes, it's challenging when you get to the switchbacks. It gets steep, you just need to take frequent breaks. Depending on the time of year it can get pretty warm so again, take frequent breaks. Honestly the best time of year for this hike is Spring when there is the most water from the snow run off. Summer is usually pretty dry unless there has been some rain. I do like that this trail has a lot of shade unlike some others.

Bring a good hiking boots, because it gets rocky and the rocks are occasionally loose. I slipped so many times.
I'd say it's for intermediate hikers, because it's all uphill until you get to the falls.
We brought our pup with us and saw so many people and families with dogs too.
The falls is not really a massive beautiful falls, well, not on the day we came at least, it does have trickling of water coming down.
There is a five minute trail to a cave from the falls, that's a nice view to explore too.
It's a fun trail all in all.
The have a restroom at the entrance and there are plenty of parking.

This is one of my favorite hikes! Be prepared for lots of climbing. Wear shoes with lots of traction, as the trail is pretty slippery with rocks and dirt. There are some narrow points along the trail, but even on a busy weekend, there were no problems with overcrowding on the trails. Lots of really pretty views along the way up, and places to rest if needed. There is a pretty cool cave at the top you can explore, the view from the top makes this hike worth it!

Great hike up to Mary Jane Falls. Takes about 35 min one way if you are in decent shape. First part is on fairly even terrain, thereafter comes a somewhat steep ascent to the falls. I would recommend to wear good shoes but other than that no special equipment is needed. Falls are amazing and you are rewarded with a great view of the valley once you made it to the falls.

Very nice, 3 mile round trip hike to where there is an icy waterfall in the winter time. Melting snow drips down the mountain side, to cool you off from this easy to moderate trail. Even though it's 20 degrees cooler, I still have difficulty when the heat and elevation hits me. Scenery is always beautiful up in Kyle Canyon, the colorful flowers and butterflies and lots of stinky dog poo left along the trail

Driving in the Red Rock Canyon State Park, the landscaping was just totally different than what we are used to. The scenery was pretty, overlooks were everywhere, and one way loop to many hikes and stops. We did the La Madre hike to see a baby spring water more like a baby pond but it was nice to see the sunset toward the end of our hike. Overall not my favorite out of all the hikes around Vegas such as Zion and Grand Canyon and Valley of Fire still a honorable mention!

Wow what a great hike today. Weather was perfect. We did La Madre hike which is a lot of accent to get to the top but worth the climb. At the top you have awesome views of the surrounding mountains and a running stream. Not a lot of other hikers today so was peaceful and relaxing. Highly recommend any trail in Red Rock’s!
