Cusco

Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes, was once capital of the Inca Empire, and is now known for its archaeological remains and Spanish colonial architecture. Plaza de Armas is the central square in the old city, with arcades, carved wooden balconies and Incan wall ruins. The baroque Santo Domingo Convent was built on top of the Incan Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha), and has archaeological remains of Inca stonework.

Flea & Street Markets
Mercado Central de San Pedro is a lively covered market offering a variety of goods such as produce, meat, clothing, souvenirs, snacks, and fresh juices. Before visiting the market, you can explore the bohemian area of San Blas with its cobbled streets and Inca history. The neighborhood is known for its local artisans creating beautiful crafts sold at the Santurantikuy fair.
Sprawling marketplace offering a large variety of everything from local arts and crafts to juices and smoothies. Great spot for people watching. Make sure to do some good natured negotiating before buying, it's expected and it can be a lot of fun!

It's not just tourists who eat and shops here, the locals do too. They've got local stuff, food, fresh produce, drinks, souvenirs, and even pisco. I love chicken soup, and a bunch of places sell it, but only the one on the corner is packed. It's so good, with a savory broth and juicy chicken. There are also lots of fresh fruit juice stands, and they're all good. They squeeze it fresh, no ice, no sugar, it's so fresh and delicious. You should check out this market before 10 am, otherwise, it'll be super crowded.
SPICY — Google review
A colorful and authentic local market! The San Pedro Market is a must-visit in Cusco. It’s full of life, colors, and amazing local products. You can find everything here — fresh fruits, local food, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, giving you a real taste of Peruvian culture. It’s also a great place to try traditional dishes and interact with friendly local vendors. Walking through the aisles is an experience full of scents, sounds, and smiles. A true gem in the heart of Cusco !

This is a fresh market with a wide variety of local souvenirs and food at very affordable prices. If you're looking to buy souvenirs to take home, this is the place to stop. Even on your way to the market, you'll find locals selling goods along the roadside at very reasonable prices.
Ran B — Google review
Our tour guide took us here and introduced us to some native fresh fruit and get to try few of them on the spot. Great experience. This is a genuine market place for the locals but also mixes in few tourists groups. It very humbling to see how hard people work here and how lucky we are.
Jesse L — Google review
The place to get just about anything you need. Fruit drinks, chicken soup, clothing, alcohol and so much more. Opens at 6:30am. Recommend going early in the morning to beat the crowd.
Craig B — Google review
I ate such delicious healthy local food here cooked by the Indigenous women everyday during my week-long stay. I don’t understand why many tourists don’t eat here! Lunch with generous portions of a soup and entre for 8 soles or $2.5. Highly recommend and please tip them if you can even if it’s not expected :)
Indraneel D — Google review
This is a great spot to visit if you are spending some days in Cusco to acclimatise to the altitude. The market itself is mostly inside so it is perfect for a rainy day. There are different sections for fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, souvenirs and lunch. There are also stands where you can buy freshly made fruit smoothies. These were really tasty and made fresh. The meat1section can smell quite bad so don’t spend too much time here. You can also get souvenirs here. It seemed like we were charged normal prices and the people did not try to scam tourists here. We paid the normal prices everywhere.

Plaza de Armas is a vibrant city square located in the heart of the bustling urban center. It is surrounded by well-preserved Spanish colonial buildings and is dominated by a UNESCO-listed cathedral. Historically, it was a significant site, once hosting the palace of the Inca, noble palaces, and important temples. Today, it remains a hub of activity and an essential stop for visitors looking to immerse themselves in the rich history and architecture of the area.

Place of worship
Qorikancha, also known as the 'Court of Gold,' is a significant Inca ruin located in Peru. It was originally built to honor the sun god and was adorned with pure gold, including walls, altars, and life-size statues of plants and animals. However, much of its wealth was looted during the Spanish conquest.
Very neat place to check out. The history is fascinating and worth learning about. There is great art work and some incredible woodworking. If you like history of religion there is a lot of it. My favorite part of it is the amazing architecture.
Michael H — Google review
The most important temple of the Inca empire, partially destroyed to build the church. The museum goes over the history but also has paintings of the Cusco school (amongst others). On the balconies you get nice views of the city, or you can climb up the bell tower to get even better ones.
Bruno V — Google review
The site primarily features pre-Inca stonework and a church, presenting a compelling juxtaposition of historical periods. The experience extends beyond the interior, encompassing the exterior as well. We recommend visiting the top tower for panoramic views and the artifacts bell. The entrance fee is approximately ten Soles. Ascending to the summit via the narrow stairway offers a memorable experience.
SPICY — Google review
What a beautiful museum/heritage site. So much to learn! Please note: entry is not included in the boleto turístico (only the Museo del Sitio Q, which is not worth it). But for this site, it's 20 soles well spent. Allow for at least 90 minutes if you don't want to rush.
Eugenio C — Google review
An amazing place full of history and beauty! The Temple of the Sun in Cusco, also known as Qorikancha, is one of the most impressive sites I visited in Peru. The combination of ancient Inca architecture and Spanish colonial influence is truly fascinating. You can really feel the spirit of the Inca civilization in every stone. The museum inside offers interesting information about the culture and beliefs of the Incas. A beautiful and peaceful place that you shouldn’t miss when visiting Cusco!
Aymen C — Google review
Such a beautiful museum. So much Inca history and views were amazing. Im glad I paid 5 soles which is less than 2 us dollars to go upstairs to see the bells and views. Don't skip that part. It's worth your time!
Stephanie B — Google review
Qorikancha is one of the most historically significant sites in all of Peru. It was once the dazzling Inca Temple of the Sun, famously covered in gold. Today, you witness an incredible architectural fusion: the Spanish Santo Domingo Convent built directly on the top of the original, perfectly fitted Inca stone walls. The most amazing part is seeing how the Inca walls survived every major earthquake, while the Spanish structures did not. It is a powerful testament to Inca engineering genius and a must-see for understanding the depth of Cusco's history. Truly unforgettable.

Good to visit after Machu Pichu. An important historical area and central to the Inca culture. you’ll appreciate it more if you went to Machu Pichu before hand. It also helps in altitude acclimation if you do Machu Pichu first since Cusco city is almost 1,000 meters higher in elevation. You can’t take pictures of the preserved paintings but they are worth looking at especially the mix of a European oil painting style with subservient Inca culture imbedded secretly which was not obvious during the time. A local guide is recommended as they can give you more context that’s beyond what’s written on the paintings. If you just want to leisurely go around without a guide, that’s certainly an option and there’s a coffee shop inside and clean restrooms. Our favorite painting is the crucified Jesus with Mary & Joseph at each side chewing apparently Coca leaves. Only apparent when you look closer and one of their cheeks is plump. Pretty cool! If you want pictures with an alpaca, make sure you have coins to tip the person after the picture. 2 soles per person is a good tip. You can give more if you like.

Sights & Landmarks
Cusco Cathedral, constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries, is a grand structure adorned with colonial paintings. The cathedral was built over many years by various architects and masters, using stones from the Sacsayhuaman complex. It houses impressive pieces of art including 256 silver items and a silver monstrance embellished with pearls, rubies, amethysts, sapphires, and topazes.
If you’re visiting this cathedral you might as well pay 2.5 euro extra to visit San Cristobal and the archbishop’s museum, the inca museum and some other places. The former has a bell tower with a nice view of Cusco and the latter has quite a few impressive pieces of art. No pictures allowed here.

Nice church but the unique thing to see here is the last supper painting depicting cuy (guinea pig) as the main course, a one of a kind treasure by Marcos Zapata..
Gary M — Google review
A catherdal built in the 16th century though it was restored after the 1671 earthquake. It has many paintings throughout. Crypts can be found inside. The have many places showing joesph holding baby Jesus instead of Mary. They also have the grandparents of Mary. A uneso recognized site as seen by the blue and white symbol outside.
Craig B — Google review
Lovely church. The sad part is they charge to enter, but you can not take any photos inside.
Roger G — Google review
I found it a little kitsch, even by baroque standards. The fake marble was a particular highlight. Staff tried to overcharge you so keep your wits about you. 40 soles is quite expensive entry fee all things considered, you’d do well to stretch out visit to an hour.
A T — Google review
Beautiful cathedral that you can visit in about half an hour without a guide. There is not much to read to learn about the place unfortunately. You got to notice the wigs they put to the statues!
Philippe — Google review
It was a good experience to see what the Spanish colonization did to the aboriginal people's places. The architecture is nice from the outside and inside as well. The highlight of the whole cathedral is the picture inside where Pizzaro is represented as the person who ruined the Inca culture. Thank you 🇵🇪

Wonderful histories! Don't miss the Last Supper with guinea pig on the table and countless examples of syncretistic art... Especially in the original side chapel Madonnas and the "black" Jesus chapel and story of it's annual use and relation to the earthquakes in 1650 & 1950. I LOVED the actual car covered completely in silver still used in Corpus Christi parades.

Plaza San Blas is located in Cusco's artisan quarter and is home to a variety of workshops and galleries such as Galeria Arte Olave and Museo Taller Hilario Mendivil, offering an array of striking artifacts, sculptures, religious images, ceramics, and earthenware. The plaza features a small artificial waterfall and picturesque stairs leading to a charming spot for photos with the city and mountains in the background.
The square is pleasant, but it’s not in itself a “must-see,” but the neighborhood is! It feels more authentic, with nice stores and plenty of restaurants nearby that are worth visiting. If you have a couple of days in Cusco, definitely stop by and walk up the hill to the neighborhood overlooking the city.
Ole S — Google review
This plaza should be regarded as the 'entry' to the San Blas neighborhood, which I think is one of the best in Cusco. The immediate area boasts numerous art galleries and excellent restaurants. I wish I had discovered this area sooner, as there were many other places I wanted to try out nearby. This neighborhood is not to be missed during your time in Cusco.

A Gem of History, Coffee, and Color Stepping into this area feels like walking through a beautifully preserved storybook. It's a place bursting with character, offering a truly diverse experience that appeals to history buffs, coffee lovers, and anyone who appreciates vibrant, picturesque streets. The city is full of varied historical sites and diverse circuits (or tours), ensuring there's always something new to discover, whether it's an ancient ruin, a bustling local market, or a hidden architectural marvel. The blend of past and present is seamless and captivating. But what truly sets it apart are the charming, colorful, and ancient alleyways. Wandering through these narrow streets is a delight. The buildings, painted in a beautiful spectrum of hues, provide endless opportunities for stunning photos and a sense of tranquility away from the main thoroughfares. And, of course, the coffee shops are exceptional. Dotted throughout the ancient lanes, you'll find cozy havens serving up fantastic brews. They are perfect spots to relax, soak in the atmosphere, and watch the world go by. In summary: If you are looking for a destination that offers a rich tapestry of history, a thriving coffee scene, and some of the most beautiful, colorful, and enchanting streets you'll ever see, this place is an absolute must-visit. I hope this captures the essence of what you were looking for! Do you want to try and translate this back into Farsi or would you like to add anything else to the review?

Lovely, colorful place! No traffic (finally!) and the narrow streets give South of France vibe. Plenty of street art and pretty little shops. A must if you enjoy this style 😊

Nice garden place, there are artists that sell their arts in some days, if I’m not wrong in Saturday, there is a beautiful church near by and the waterfall is beautiful 🙏🏻
Guy S — Google review
This is a great little plaza to sit and people watch. We love when they have little markets and musicians/entertainers on. But it’s equally as lovely to sit and watch the world go by near the water feature.
Our F — Google review
There's a bunch of shops, restaurants, and massage places. If you're near Plaza de Armas, it's a bit of a hike with a steep hill, and it might be rough the first couple of days because of the altitude.
SPICY — Google review
Nice little area to walk around, I came here to find local art. All of the places are selling the exact same art for too much in my opinion. We found one store selling pieces for 25% less. But when I got back to Lima they sold the exact same art for half the price. Don’t be fooled that the “artists” are local. Maybe you will find one or two unique pieces. But trust me when I say every place has the same pieces. Even the people out on the street with their small portfolios are selling the exact same art.

Cicciolina is a delightful establishment located in an old colonial house near Cusco's central plaza. It features a cozy tapas bar and an intimate candle-lit restaurant on the second floor. The warm ambiance, with its wooden beams, earthy walls, and rustic decor, creates a welcoming atmosphere where guests are greeted like long-time friends.
Food, service, and atmosphere were great here! Worth stopping by while you are in Cusco. My first time trying the guinea pig gyoza. I think it tastes like a rabbit. It was not bad.
Nisha N — Google review
I'll start with the positive... the food was very good and our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and attentive. I'm giving it 3 stars solely because they charged me a "cover" charge per head. That just felt dirty when I got the bill and saw this extra charge. I would have happily paid more for our meals and drinks, rather than see this type of surcharge on my bill. It just felt cheap, dirty, and as if I was being taken advantage of at it came after the meal with the check with no mention of it prior to seating.
Jason O — Google review
I really wanted to like Cicciolina but it fell short for me. Alpaca starter was only 4 slices of Alpaca. Squid ink was okay nothing spectacular. Ossobucco sauce was way too sweet and the walnuts in the dumplings were rancid. Service was excellent, ambience was cozy and the lemongrass ginger drink was good but the sweetness could be toned down a bit.
Grace — Google review
This is the best restaurant we had in Peru. We totally te moment the Alpaca meat and the new dessert. The service is simply perfect. The music and the atmosphere fits the quality of the food.
Alex U — Google review
Almost as disappointing as a server who doesn’t pay any attention to your needs, is a server that is overly friendly. Our server was very friendly to the extreme and really tried to sell us the appetizer - after which I caved in and went for. It was a shiitake ceviche and not only did it not taste all that great (way too much lemon, and raw shiitake did not do it for me at all) but the raw tarwi was a bit much on my digestive track as well. If you are a visitor avoid this dish is my recommendation! The mocktails were way too sweet, and disappointing for the price point. Our main dishes of risotto and chicken were all right, but not above average. The chicken was very juicy and cooked well but the crispy polenta was really dry and flavorless. My partner liked his risotto but it also wasn’t anything overly notable flavor wise - just all right. They have a great atmosphere and the decor was very interesting as as well as the views. It seems they have a clean kitchen and so you’re probably safe on any cooked dishes as a visitor. If you have to decide between “Ciccolina” and Gaston’s “Chicha” the later is definitely the better option.
Raven D — Google review
Easily the best meal I’ve had in Cuzco! The scallops and quail egg tapas were incredible and so was the seafood risotto. I’ve thought about it every night since and may have to return!
Julia S — Google review
This place! Please try it, you’ll not regret it. Reservations for dinner recommended but walk-in spaces for early dinner/lunch. Everything is well priced, beautifully presented, and served proper. We went tapas style and highly recommend the octopus and causa. It was the best octopus I have ever had.
Jess E — Google review
I just want to mention couple of weird things we experienced here. They charged us 15sol for plain water. Actually we only had half cup of water each person, the waiter took the left water (I thought it is free). We were charged 10 sol for a big bottle of water at Pachapapa at another day. The most weird thing was they charged us 8 sol cover fee for napkin and table cover (?) for each person, see my bill. This is the first time in my life that I was charged for cover. The food is delicious, the service is great. The waiter gave extra plates for us to share the dishes. They explained the menu very patient and clearly. The atmosphere is great as well though the window seats do not have much view.

Pachapapa is a charming restaurant located in Cusco, celebrated for its rustic atmosphere and traditional Andean decor. The courtyard offers a delightful dining experience with parasols and greenery during the day, while evenings are enlivened by candlelight and local musicians. The menu features meat-oriented dishes such as cuy chactado, kankacho, and pizzas topped with local ingredients like smoked trout.
We had an absolutely wonderful experience at Pachapapa! The food was outstanding—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. What made the evening even more special was our waiter, David. He was warm, attentive, and made us feel truly welcome, offering great recommendations that we loved. His service was exceptional and really enhanced our dining experience. We’ll definitely be back and highly recommend Pachapapa, especially with David as your waiter!

Fun dining experience. Called in advance to reserve the Guinea pig. The meat tasted special but it did need some efforts to have the very first bite. It came with potato, salads and corns as sides. Salad was also good, refreshing and dressing was special. Bread/buns were made home, fresh and a bit sweet. Overall a nice place in Cusco.
Mia — Google review
We went to Pachapapa four times during our six-day stay in Cusco, and every visit was amazing. Each time we ordered different dishes, and we loved every one of them. The service was excellent every time too. Panchita was wonderful, and the rest of the team was just as kind and attentive, even though I don’t remember everyone’s names. The outdoor area has such a unique and cozy vibe, and the other rooms are charming with details like a wood-fired stove. We tried several other restaurants in Cusco, but none had the same authentic feel or flavor. The alpaca meat was delicious, and we also loved the beef ribs, empanadas, ceviche, and quinoa soup. Definitely come here hungry — everything is worth trying!
Caglar K — Google review
This was a recommendation from our concierge at JW Marriott. We are glad that we tried cuy here. You have to wait 1hr after you order cuy because they need time to roast it in the oven. Beto, our waiter was nice and helpful explaining where they source their cuy. They get their guinea pigs from sacred valley. All the appetizers were freshly made. I especially enjoyed the corn dish. The restaurant is nestled in Plaza San Blas which is peaceful without many tourists. The house baked bread they serve before the meal is comforting: they have perfect texture and density. I personally thought having an outdoor oven for the bread added more local touch to the atmosphere.
Charlotte B — Google review
Visited twice during our stay here in Cusco. Each time was pleasant and friendly. The food was great, we had the trout, the seco, the konkachu, and the ossobucco all from their courtyardside stone oven. They great you with some complimentary bread and accompanying salsa. Eat within the courtyard if you can and try their selections of wine or pisco. Gareth, was great, very helpful and knowledgeable of the menu!

This set the bar very high for Peru. After eating Peruvian cuisine in many Latin American countries, my first mainland experience far exceeded them. The food was fantastic, with fresh ingredients and very intentional flavors, including with the house cocktails. The location had a great, natural atmosphere too. But what stood out even more was the service from Gareth. He was amiable, informative about the food, and a joy overall. We look forward to our second visit this trip!
Samuel W — Google review
Great authentic atmosphere, Dante our waiter was great and helped with anything we needed. We ordered beef and lamb, the food was very good although a bit salty - however we found this in most restaurants in Cusco. Would definitely recommend for an authentic experience — trout ceviche was amazing and very fresh!

Limo is a restaurant that offers a unique fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, blending fresh ingredients with traditional cooking techniques. Located in an old colonial residence overlooking the Plaza de Armas of Cusco, it provides a stylish terrace dining experience.
First night in Cusco and first bite to eat and we sat at the bar. I didn’t know what to expect but I was wowed and amazed. I ordered the Ice tea Limo made by Piero and it was exquisite the blend of the tea with the berries was perfect. Ronald our waiter was attentive and caring as well as quick. The sushi was so fresh and the sauce was delicious. Julio the chef also made us a dish that blew my mind. Everything here was absolutely delicious and I would definitely come again. The people here want you to try their delicious food and they do not disappoint. If you are ever in Cusco this is a must on the list.

This is a nice space. I went here on a recommendation, and I had high expectations. They were mostly met, but I live in Asia and have had ‘real’ Japanese food for 30 years. This was an interpretation of the food, and I thought some of their flavor combinations missed the mark a little. Still, it is a high-quality place and worth a visit.

Great breakfast spot. Good portions and delicious. Went several times because my significant other really liked the food. Good variety that suited both of us. Must try the mocha (add a shot of Kahlúa to spice it up). The Alpaca sandwich was phenomenal!

I went to Jacks twice while in Cusco, both times for breakfast/brunch and both times were spectacular! I had a smoothie and basic egg/toast breakfast the first visit, and Helios rancheros and a latte the second visit. Staff are very friendly and service is prompt, even if you are a group (5) and walk in. The interior is very cute and clean, and there are a lot of shops just up the hill.

I had the smoked trout sandwich and it was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever had. The bread is light and made in-house. The flavor of the trout was fantastic, and it was perfectly balanced with a layer of house-made garlic spiced cream cheese, a drizzle of balsamic, generous portions of avocado, and some capers. I could eat that regularly! The coffee was quite good as well. The layout is so cute and bright, but the WiFi cut out and did not come back on, so possibly not an ideal location for working.

We had a set menu which was great food and were well prepared and presented. They are not well prepared for people with food allergies. If you are gluten free beware, they do not know the difference between gluten and dairy.

Hidden in the backyard of a private museum, this is a real insider tip. Amazing food, perfect service, great ambiance. Three course menu in the evening reasonably priced for what you get!

This was a Michelin level meal! DELICIOUS and Beautifully presented! Description of the servings explained by John, our server, who let us know the origin & regions of our meal and their connections to the Peru landscape. A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! Wine selection was very complementary to the meal. Highly recommend!! Noisy cafe when large tables are seated.

Our set 5 course dinner menu was diverse and creative. Did not really suit our taste but the execution and ambiance was good.

This is a must visit as they got the most tasty ceviche everrr! The staffs are kind and well-trained, capable of explaining and offering recommendations. We ordered two main dishes: one beef cheek and another duck rice, both are great! I personally think it’s a bit heavy though, and the beef cheek would be better if less salty. But overall, very nice ambiance and just that ceviche alone is well worth the visit. In our case, we had a detailed tour around the museum part then we had lunch here. Highly recommended!

Map Cafe situated inside the Museo de Arte Precolombino with modern, all‑glass pavilion. The menu offers blends classic Peruvian dishes with a twist.
