Atami

Atami is a seaside city on Japan’s Izu Peninsula, in the Shizuoka Prefecture southwest of Tokyo. It’s set on volcanic hills within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, which is also home to Mount Fuji. A prominent resort for centuries due to its numerous natural hot springs, it has several public onsen baths and an artificial sand beach on Sagami Bay.

Castle
Atami Castle, perched atop Nishikigaura in Atami City, is a unique tourist attraction replicating the look of a traditional castle tower. Built in 1959, it offers diverse attractions such as an exhibition on Japan's castles and a 360-degree panoramic view from the top floor. Visitors can also enjoy a jet foot bath on the first-floor balcony while taking in magnificent views, especially during cherry blossom season.
Not a traditional castle but still a great experience. Amazing views at the top. There was a samurai museum in the first floor and an arcade below. Lovely cafe of the cliff adjacent
Phoebe E — Google review
The view from this tourist castle is nice. And the samurai museum is cool. But remember this was created I the 1950's to attract tourists so it's not a real castle. There's plenty of parking if you drive right up to the castle.
Matthijs — Google review
This place was built solely for the purpose of sucking in tourists. For eleven months, I have been looking at it from my balcony on the other side of the harbor. This morning, I peddled my bicycle up there. It was good exercise and little else.
Howard B — Google review
Even though it's an old Japanese-style castle, I wondered why the inside wasn't cramped, and it seems to be because the building was constructed in 1958. Floors 1 to 5 are museums, and the 6th floor is an observation deck. The first basement floor had a free arcade, which I really liked because unlike the arcades outside where you have to insert a coin every time you die in a game, here you could play the arcade machines for free without limit.
최선홍 — Google review
We really enjoyed all of the model's and history of japanese castles. The views are stunning. Taking the rope way up is very unique. Skip the 3rd floor folks...If there's a trap... it's this one
Dave N — Google review
Very crowded, but beautiful castle. In the inside there is nothing much, but the view from the top floor is spectacular. The souvenir shop is ok. The worst thing is the location - very incovienent for people who don't have car. From the bus stop it's still 15 minutes walk uphill, very steep. Local bus is unreliable, today it was delayed by 40 minutes. You have to wait for the bus at the edge of a busy road, next to a tunnel. You can of course go to the castle by ropeway, but it's very expensive and you still have to walk uphill. In front of castle is a cafe, restaurant and a lot of small stalls. Overall, it's an interesting structure, but I wouldn't visit it again because of the inconvenience.
Stella R — Google review
I'm a foreigner from the USA visiting. I enjoyed Atami castle. It was clean and there were many interesting exhibits. My favorites were the miniature buildings depicting battles from old times. And there was enough of a mixture of things to do to keep the whole family interested in something including the children who might want to just play the arcade games while the adults explore. Very fun experience. Though I was really interested in learning of the history of Atami.
John M — Google review
So I was suppose to go visit the atami castle after checking out of our amazing hotel on the strip and before heading to Tokyo. Direction was super confusing and I drove around 3 times and could not find the entrance. Lots of construction the day we arrived , so we ended up giving up and just leaving without going in. But the castle looks great from afar

Art museum
Museums
Perched on a hilltop, MOA Museum of Art offers a captivating experience with its collection of over 3,500 East Asian art pieces, including national treasures and significant cultural assets. The museum boasts stunning panoramic views of Atami and the sea from its main lobby and MOA Plaza. Visitors can also unwind in the tranquil Ippakuan Tearoom while savoring Japanese confections and matcha tea amidst the beauty of a traditional Japanese garden.
MOA Art Museum 8.5/10 1) Access from Tokyo Take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Atami Station and get off at Atami Station, about 40 minutes. From Atami Station, get off at the last stop of the bus bound for MOA Museum of Art building, and it takes about 10 minutes. 2) Cost 9,000 yen for transportation, 2,000 yen for admission fee 3) Review The museum is located on a hill in Atami. The founder, Mokichi Okada, was a religious man, but he originally wanted to pursue a career in art and has a deep knowledge of it. After taking a bus to the top of the hill, visitors can take an escalator up to the top of the hill, where they are surprised to find that the facility is much larger than they expected and imagined. Although it is an art museum, it also has a Noh theater within the facility, where Noh performances are held. In front of the Noh theater, there is a video showing the secrets of the Noh theater, which is very interesting. The golden tea room where Toyotomi Hideyoshi entertained the emperor of the time has been recreated, and a calligraphy by Toyotomi Hideyori gives visitors a sense of history. In addition, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Sagami Bay and be dazzled by the beauty of Atami. There are too many spots to enjoy before entering the exhibition rooms! The July 25 exhibition is an exhibition of works by Japanese living national treasures. The transparency of the glass in the exhibition room is so amazing that you cannot tell that there is glass between you and the exhibits at all, allowing you to concentrate on the artwork. A wonderful project and environment that shows the excellence of the works of the living national treasures. The facility has French, Japanese, Soba, and coffee shops to satisfy your lunch needs.

Small museum on top of a hill. The museum has 3 floors and you an get here by bus. There's a bunch of escalators to the top. We had a rental car so we parked on the 3rd floor. Also saw a bunch of taxis. So I would advies to take one of those options and don't try to walk. The museum itself is nice. There are a lot of woodblockprints and a golden tea room. The garden outside had nice views if the bay below. They also have a small bamboo grove and a few old tea house that were eithere rebuilt or relocated to this area.
Matthijs — Google review
The view from the museum is beautiful🥰 Thankfully the coin lockers here are free of charge, meaning I can enjoy the space without my bags. The exhibition I went to was super interesting, scrolls about a fantastical tragic love story from ancient times. The glass was so clear that I sometimes forget about it, and when you take pictures there's no reflection. The outside Japanese garden is also fun to walk around. Would spend about 2-3 hours here, if you don't sit down and eat.
許有宜 — Google review
Please remember that most of the art here is Japanese art, not Contemporary art. The building is amazing and the escalator ride is a piece of art in itself.
C F — Google review
The MOA is meticulously prepared and cared about museum. The current exhibit (Rinpa) was nicely detailed with English translation. Every detail was perfect. We also enjoyed the view from the cafe and walking through the japanese garden. There is a direct bus from Atami Station (Stop 8) and you can buy tickets at the entrance. There are coin lockers.
Léo P — Google review
Interesting 20th century scroll paintings, ceramics, and basket art. There is a beautiful garden with a teahouse serving Japanese food. There is a shuttle from the train station. Then you go up 7 escalators to reach the museum. There is a colourful ceiling that changes like a kaleidoscope.
Kaye H — Google review
It’s so lovely. Ride up in a cab and walk down. It’s got great view of the bay and city. So many national treasures. I recommend even if you’re a total meathead with zero culture or appreciation of art because it’s got cool escalators.
Scot R — Google review
This is one of those musuems where every part of the musuem architecture is thoughtfully designed and works of art in their own right. I found myself stopping at random points in hallways and doorways, admiring the tasteful thought put into it. The museum sits on top of a steep hill above Atami city, and can be accessed by driving or public bus. The viewing gallery near the entrance provides a paranmoc view of Atami, the sea and the museum compound. There are permanent galleries housing collections of mainly Japanese paintings, pottery and crafts.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled among towering trees near Kinomiya Station, Kinomiya Shrine is an ancient and picturesque shrine with a mystical atmosphere. Accessible through a tunnel track, the shrine is home to a revered 2,000-year-old camphor tree and enshrines Isotakeru-no-Mikoto, the deity of forestry. Visitors come to pray in front of this magnificent tree, seeking blessings for longevity and strength in facing life's obstacles.
Came on a Wednesday at 9am and while there were some people there it definitely wasn't crowded like we saw around 1 or 2 pm. It is such a lovely shrine with so many little pathways - there's a path of small tori gates (only like 8), then some stairs to view the river / stream. The shrine is said to bring good fortune and luck. It's well known for its 2000 year old camphor tree, if you walk around the tree it's said to add a year to your life span. We walked around that and the smaller tree for good measure. :)
Erin T — Google review
A temple surrounded by nature. The main attraction are the 2 centuries-old trees. There are also two cafes with outdoor tables where you can enjoy nature while drinking a coffee.
Matias S — Google review
It is a beautiful shrine with many great photo spots. On the day I visited, there was a wedding ceremony that felt warm and well-organized. I especially enjoyed the café at the back, where I had green tea and some chewy, delicious desserts. The atmosphere was calm and refreshing—sitting there surrounded by greenery made for a truly pleasant and relaxing experience.
Thanita B — Google review
Beautiful shrine and kind staff. We started our goshuinmeguri here because we loved the trees and the wooden goshuincho. Even on a very hot day, the shade and trees are cooling. As with other popular shrines, please go early in the day to avoid crowds.
Dave B — Google review
A serene shrine that’s home to a 2000 years old camphor tree which legends says will add one year of age every round you walk around it. What I like is there are phone stands in front of several photo spots for selfies and even a platform that allows people to go up to take pictures with the ancient tree up close, and also a shop for lucky charms which have a lot of different designs.
JoyC — Google review
Huge temple complex with a few different buildings and 2 very old trees (1300 and 2000 years old). There a parking lot to the right of the temple.

What a wonderful, beautiful, traditional shrine. The treat options were great (ice cream and sweet potato chips were absolutely stood delicious), and the staff were all extremely pleasant women. Truly a life-affirming experience 💜

Sights & Landmarks
Kiunkaku is a unique and noteworthy historical landmark in Atami that showcases a fusion of traditional and modern architecture. This villa, turned inn, offers tours of its lush Japanese garden which boasts impressive koi fish. Visitors can explore the traditional Japanese house on the premises as well. The location should be approached with care, as the glass is fragile. Kiunkaku is an attraction worth adding to any itinerary for those interested in architecture or Japanese gardens while visiting Atami.
A very nice villa in te center of Atami. It's supposed to be one of the 3 most beautiful in the region and I can see why. You can park next tot the villa. And then walk around inside to view all the different rooms. There's a nice garden as well.
Matthijs — Google review
Great historical landmark and story from the wealthy family that fulfilling their dreams to make this happen. There will be entrance fees, and need around 1 hour of the tour. Worth visiting if you have spare time.

Incredible historic resort, ticket is 600 yen (cash only) which is super worth it. There are so many beautiful room with Japanese and western styling, implacable solarium and garden. Highly recommend and a must see.

Beautiful place with a peaceful vibe. Dazai Osamu had been here, you can enter the room where he stayed at with Tomie Yamazaki. They had seat and some good place for you to stand and look around outside. Taisho vibe, an antique machiya. Price is cheap imo for a good service and splendid place.
Đoàn K — Google review
It's the place where you can plan to go for 20 minutes, and suddenly 2 hours pass by. If you want to leisurely enjoy the architecture of the luxurious former ryokan, mixing Japanese and Western styles, stretching around the beautiful garden, up to 1 hour should be enough ( especially since most information about its guests is in Japanese.) However, with the mix of luck and willingness, you can prolong the stay, making bookmarks out of pressed flowers ( 2 for 500 yen), buying a kimono or stumbling upon the touching poetry recital. There is an elegant vintage café as well. It was a perfectly spent afternoon on a rainy day.
Anytsuaf S — Google review
Nice tourist attraction in Atami. The location has really fragile glass so be aware of this if you need support walking or have kids that like to run around. The garden was beautiful & has some pretty large koi fish that must be over 50 years old.

Beautifully preserved former residence/ryokan that hosted many famous guests such as Osamu Dazai and Yukio Mishima. It features Japanese and Western-inspired interiors, Roman-style baths and a landscape garden. It also hosts exhibitions by local artists and photographers. Despite visiting on the weekend it was not crowded at all. It is a lovely place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Public beach
Atami Sun Beach is a picturesque sandy strip flanked by palm trees and resort hotels, making it a popular spot for moonlight walks and summer fireworks. Conveniently located near rental shops, main roads, and a charming marina, this beach is ideal for summer fun. Visitors can easily find nearby restaurants and convenience stores to grab a bite or bring food onto the sand. The tranquil atmosphere makes it perfect for relaxation and enjoying nature's beauty.
Watching the **Atami Sea Fireworks** was an unforgettable experience. I sat right on the beach, feeling incredibly close to the stunning display. As the fireworks burst into the dark sky, the entire region lit up, and the impact of the sound was exhilarating. The show lasted about 20 minutes, with the first minute and the last two minutes being particularly spectacular, as fireworks shot up in rapid succession. The atmosphere was electric, and I found myself completely captivated by the colors and sounds. The beach offers plenty of space for viewing, and I appreciated that it wasn’t overly crowded, possibly because the fireworks show is a monthly event. Just bring your own mat for a comfortable spot on the sand, and you’re all set. Overall, the Atami Sea Fireworks was a fantastic experience that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a magical evening by the sea!
Michelle H — Google review
A beach popular with locals as well as tourists to Atami. There is a breakwater promenade on the south side if the beach, hosting a pier for recreational boats, and is a nice place to sit and relax in the evenings. The sun is strongest here in the mornings, given that it faces east.
Jason — Google review
We visited Sun Beach in August 2025. Although the posted swimming hours are 9:00-16:00, in reality most continue to swim after that, just without lifeguards. The sand is soft and the water is fairly shallow and calm. It is very nice to come at night for the illuminations. There were also many families doing fireworks in the sand. There are coin lockers, toilets, showers and footwashes (free), and dumpsters on the beach for trash.
Sarah H — Google review
An amazing beach. You can play different activities here. It's perfect to have a bottle of cold beer walking on the beach in hot summer.
Man W — Google review
I went there on Friday night to see a firework show hosted by the atami city. Although I was a bit late, I still found a decent spot for photos. The Japanese people are really disciplined and polite so there wasn’t any people squishing and pushing around. The beach is also really clean with little rubbish only. There is also a small park beside it with water fountains and some nicely decorated handrails. Overall, the environment and atmosphere is amazing with great hygiene. Definitely recommend it for picnics or to have a swim. Below are some photos I took during the firework show, pls enjoy!!!☺️
A E — Google review
Awesome beach with lots of bars along the coast. Has a great view of Mt Fuji in the distance.
Dian A — Google review
Nice firework show that you can view closely on the beach, with relative not much crowd. The show lasts for around 20 minutes which is relatively short compared to other cities in Japan. It's a pity that they don't have any pop-up stores that sell food or souvenirs. Not many decent restaurants nearby too.
Victor L — Google review
Atami Sun Beach is a stunning and relaxing destination that truly captivates with its beauty. The clean, crystal-clear waters and soft, white sand create a picturesque setting reminiscent of Busan, Korea. Whether you're looking to soak up the sun or take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, this beach offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In addition to the beach, there are plenty of other attractions nearby, making it an excellent spot for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Whether it's exploring local shops, enjoying delicious seafood, or simply taking in the views, Atami Sun Beach has something for everyone. Overall, it's certainly worth a visit for anyone seeking a relaxing beach experience! 🌴✨

At 貴美の浜焼き in Atami, you can enjoy a delightful seafood dining experience. The staff is known for their friendliness and willingness to assist non-Japanese speakers. They take pride in serving fresh seafood, often bringing out the clams, scallops, and conch shells straight from the water before grilling them to perfection. This restaurant offers an authentic Japanese atmosphere while being accommodating to foreigners.
best experience, a simple restaurant on the side of the road, but don't belittle their seafood because it is the best
Jason G — Google review
They prepared the fish we caught on our fishing trip, along with some grilled shellfish. It was wonderful and convenient for us. So cool to eat our own fresh catch!
Margarita V — Google review
The seafood was fresh and delicious! The staff were friendly and tried their best to explain things to us despite our lack of proficiency in Japanese. They brought some of the things we ordered (clams, scallop, conch shells) fresh out of the water to show us before heading back to the kitchen and popping them on the grill. This place has a bit of a roadside restaurant vibe, so you’re really paying for the fresh seafood and not the ambience, but I quite enjoyed watching the cars drive by and the atmosphere of the restaurant. It reminded me of travelling abroad and being in South East Asia! Some parts of the shellfish were very gritty, but really, that’s to be expected with shellfish.

Very nice experience . We were walking next to the port and by chance we found this restaurant. The seafood was very good. We didn’t k ow the abalone seafood and the discovery was amazing. I really recommend it !
Barnabé C — Google review
Terrible service from waitress and kitchen. One of the dishes was different from the picture in the menu. First waitress said that it's like that because they didn't have the ingredient today. I called another waitress, this time magically the ingredient was there. Also too expensive for the food, no different from other restaurants in the city but with double of price.

Irori Teahouse is a charming seafood diner in Atami that offers both Western and Japanese tables with coastal views. The restaurant is known for its fresh seafood caught from the nearby sea, which can be roasted and enjoyed on the hearth of each table at night. Visitors praise the reasonable prices and high quality of the seafood, particularly recommending the seasonal sashimi lunch set and Mago chazuke.
A great seafood izakaya with a nice selection of fresh fish. The tempura was really done well, with a light crispy exterior that didn’t get soggy. But the tuna and tuna head donburi was fantastic. It was my first time having the head of tuna and now I’m a fan. Cool ambiance. Don’t be fooled by the 3.9…it’s better than that.

See more on @foodfillingthoughts Instagram Irochaya 🐟 #Atami At Iro Chaya, I ordered the seafood bowl, and it was nothing short of fantastic! This bowl was packed with a variety of fresh, seasonal sashimi, along with generous portions of sakura shrimp and shirasu (baby sardines), making it an absolute treat for seafood lovers. 🦐 The fish was incredibly fresh, perfectly cut, and beautifully presented on top of a bed of rice. Not only was the portion size generous, but it also felt like a great deal for the quality and variety of ingredients. 🌊 By the time we left around noon, the place had gotten quite crowded, with people lining up outside, showing just how popular this spot is. 📍静岡県熱海市田原本町2-6

It was an eye-opening rude experience trying to dine here. My husband and I arrived at the restaurant at 19:30 ish and were waiting to call in (recomended by the map). When we were trying to talk with the manger who took order at first to put our names on list for table for two, the manger won’t even look me in the eye. There was a local couple ahead of us. The manger told everyonew present there, the last order time was 20:15, if we could get in and order before the deadline, we could all eat. When he was informing, the manger looked at us and said to the local Japanese couples, that he was not sure if my husband and I could get in. We decided to look around for another option with phone outside the door while waiting (spearing the awkwardness of that Japanese couple for the need to must to talk to us). At 19:58 the local couple got in and we saw around 8 people finishing meal and walked out. We went back inside and waited. At around 20:02 we were still waiting and fearing no food for us. I tried to talk to manger, he was completely cold shoulder. I told him in translating app that we have been wait for half an hour and that he's mention: before20:15 sit and order, we could eat. No matter how I explained, there i sno letting in restaurant and wasting us 40 mins for nothing. So rude, he was not planning to let us eat the beginning but he should have told us. Whatever this is, unwelcome, egoistic and possibly racist to non- Japanese / non- Japanese speaker. Omg

The signature of the restaurant would be the fresh sashimi and abalone . The taste was great yet the service was rude. It happened to couple times when the waiter delivered the dishes ,my cup was hit by the dishes he didn’t care about my drinks was down ,and there was one time that the waiters hit my chopsticks without proper apology. Even through the food was great, definitely won’t be back again

Great place to Goto if you wanna enjoy the local seafood in Atami. Price is reasonable but quality of seafood is super high. We tried the seasonal sashimi lunch set and Mago chazuke. Sushi restaurant
Isomaru Atami Nakamise is a popular dining spot in Atami known for its set meals featuring sushi and sashimi, as well as a selection of sake and shochu. The narrow dining room creates an intimate atmosphere for enjoying the fresh and tasty offerings. While some patrons wish for more variety in Japanese sake, others appreciate the special seasonal menu options.
It’s a crowded place and for sure you know the reason why it’s crowded. The star of our dinner is surprisingly the yellowtail radish miso soup. It’s thoroughly cooked and the miso flavour seep through the soft radish and bring out the flavour of the fish. This is one of the best miso soup I have in Japan. Sushi wise fresh. Cut could have been thicker. I will come here again if I ever travel in atami for onsen

Authentic Japanese restaurant
Kobayashi is a down-to-earth restaurant in Atami, known for its familiar raw and cooked seafood offerings. Visitors have praised the Tsubakizen course, which includes boiled red snapper and other delicious dishes. The sashimi platter for two is also highly recommended, with generous portions of raw whitebait and flavorful seafood. The restaurant's dream chirashi sushi and kinmedai simmered set meal have also received positive feedback.
This place was recommended by a Japanese friend, and it absolutely blew me away. Everything was incredibly fresh — the maguro was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, the sweet shrimp and squid were unbelievably sweet and tender, and the steamed fish with soy sauce was out of this world. Every bite was pure joy. I couldn’t stop saying “this is so good!” while eating. One of the best seafood meals I’ve ever had. Highly, highly recommended!

We went to this restaurant and waited for a table. After being our turn to be served, we are RUDELY declined service saying WE DON'T speak Japanese. We politely pointed out that we would order the dishes we have already taken the photos from the display. And the man went even more annoyed. So PLEASE BE WARNED. DON'T GO AND WASTE YOUR TIME. I hope I could give no star.

The waitresses were rude and highly unpleasant towards us. When they noticed that we could not speak Japanese, they immediately turned us away without even attempting to converse with us, such arrogance was uncalled for and not condoned. Their attidue of being unwelcoming towards foreigners and those who could not speak Japanese was disappointing. It was very busy at every store, but we managed to get a seat here. We ordered fresh sashimi, and it was probably the best fish I had during my trip to Japan (I didn’t have too much). The fish was incredibly fresh, tender, and silky, almost like a wagyu version. We tried a few types of fish that were unfamiliar to us, which was a bit odd, but we enjoyed the experience nonetheless. The fried fish and calamari we ordered were decent, but nothing special compared to the sashimi. There was also a make-your-own matcha station at our table, but we didn’t know how to prepare it properly and ended up making a mess.

Long queues in the afternoon so come at odd timings to get a seat instantly. Restaurant is always busy and your allocated seats may be squeezy. Sushi comes quickly and is pretty value for money. Rice taste is decent and fish is fresh. There is free green tea by the side as well.

Cheap place to join the japanese vibe for sushi. Ordered deep fried crab with sakura shrimp, it was crispy. Ordered one serving sushi set, mega size tuna sushi, shellfish sushi set, sashimi. The fishes carried no fishy smell, yet a bit too soft. Total less than ¥4000.

Don’t believe the bad reviews! It’s an excellent place that is the cheapest option! Good quality for better price!

This was one of the few places open on Sunday night. We got a big sushi platter a karaage fish and another fish not sure what kind but charcoal grilled. Everything was ok but not great. Reasonably priced. Wait staff as usual in Japan was quick and polite.
