Lille

Lille is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France, near the border with Belgium. A cultural hub and bustling university city today, it was once an important merchant center of French Flanders, and many Flemish influences remain. The historic center, Vieux Lille, is characterized by 17th-century brick town houses, cobbled pedestrian streets and the large central square, Grand Place.

Art museum
The Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille is housed in a magnificent Belle Epoque building from 1892 and boasts an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings spanning from ancient times to the 21st century.
One of France's finest art museums outside Paris! Impressive range from Flemish masters to modern works. The building itself is gorgeous and the displays are well-curated. Don't miss the sculpture gallery and decorative arts sections. The biggest highlight is the massive reliefs in the basement. Perfect for art lovers and easily accessible in the city center. Allow at least 2-3 hours to do it justice!

A lovely day out! Varied display of painting and historical items. The staff were nice. Free bag storage! Very reasonable price. Small café and gift shop available. The beautiful open spaces didn't feel crowded. My only note is there wasn't a translation for everything, so I might suggest using the audio or practicing your french🙂.

This museum was such a nice experience. First of all it is included in your city pass even the temporary exhibit. It was not too crowded to you could take your time and ease to check the art out that is displayed in a very clean and concise way. The temporary exhibit was such a delight to learn about the flemish culture. Absolutely recommended for lille visitors.

This museum is an absolute delight and a must-visit for anyone in the area. From the moment I stepped inside, the atmosphere was welcoming and the collection was impressive. As a first-time visitor, I can confidently say I'll be back. I had a wonderful experience during my visit, spending almost an hour exploring both the special exhibit and the rest of the museum. I was specifically keen on seeing "les Géants," and it certainly did not disappoint! The curation was phenomenal, and the scale and detail of the pieces truly lived up to the name. Importantly, the permanent exhibition also deserves high praise; the quality and depth I saw in the remaining time were fantastic. For first-time visitors, note that purchasing tickets at the museum itself is straightforward and easy. While my time was short, the hour spent exploring provided a fantastic, well-rounded first impression. Highly recommend making a trip to explore this gem!

Several great art pieces here. Some Picasso, Monet, and a Donatello carving that is quite incredible. My favorite part was this large collection of maps of French and Belgian cities in 3D miniature style that show the cities from a few centuries ago. My favorite statue was this skeleton holding a heart located at the top on one of the staircases. There was a cute cafe and gift shop.

An amazing place where modern touch of art meets the classical works of past masters. On three different floors you will see the region trough the different perspective to the modern era. Worth going and had a great time .
Bartosz S — Google review
Amazing, peaceful place away from the hustle and bustle of Lille centre. It is worth a visit just to see the relief maps, you couldn't carry one about on the back shelf of your carriage in case you got lost, they are huge! The Egyptians were a unique race of people, one sign said they bred cats just to slaughter them to put in a sarcophagus for the journey to the afterlife. A flint tool is the oldest thing on show, 300,000 years old! I was unsure about visiting the place but I am so glad I made the effort.

Not that there is anything wrong with Lille, it is a lovely city to visit. But adding to the ambiance of Lille one also comes across one of the great art galleries in Europe, the palais de beaux arts. Their selection of 19th century works is just a pleasure to see, each one a master by a master.

La Vieille Bourse in Lille, France is a remarkable Renaissance-era stock exchange building that holds great historical significance. It was once the center of commercial and financial activities in the city, showcasing its prosperous trading history. The building consists of 24 identical houses surrounding a courtyard, which serves as a focal point for various city events and gatherings. Its ornate architecture and gold Mercury statue on the campanile add to its grandeur.
A really beautiful building, both inside and out. We were lucky to visit on a Sunday morning and came across a second-hand and art bazaar filled with posters, books, and prints—it was such a lovely surprise!

Excellent place for book lovers, the decor of the square itself is so alazing , taking the book buying experience to a different level level. Several book stores in row selling books, posters , plates very amazing collection. The square also is very nice with metal structure in the middle making the place look cooler . Loved the idea of open air book shop . Have seen many antique shop but not exclusively book sale like this . Very unique experience not just for book lovers but for all .

The old stock exchange is one of the city’s major landmarks. You can browse books stalls and card vendors. The centre shows an art installation at the moment, a mirror sphere. The Flemish baroque architecture is bery charming. A place surely not to miss when visiting Lille. Enjoy!

Amazing architecture Mist visit place in lille You can see the complete lille from the top of the tower. 7euros ticket ,(in bulk it's 6) 150 steps to start , then you can choose steps to continue or take an elevator. On top open space space with cool breeze will mesmerize for sure. Even sovenior shop in the middle has a good collection. Never miss this place

I enjoyed my experience in la vieille bourse. It’s free for everyone to go in and it’s like a market for people to sell their old stuff like books and other gadgets and you can find so many old treasures there and prints to collect as souvenirs. It can get a little crowded there, but you can still tour the place without waiting outside as per my visit. It’s located right in the central Square of Lynn.
Mike A — Google review
Stunning views of Lille. Very well organised, the bell tower only has capacity for 18 people at any one time so a wait is inevitable. The staff frequently address the queue updating with an approximate timeline. We were told one hour but it was closer to 30mins. On entrance at ground level you store your bags in a locker and climb a few flights of stairs where after paying in the small gift shop (just over 7€ with some concessions for under 18) you can climb the remaining flights or use the elevator (holds 4 people max) This was the worst experience for me - you can really appreciate how high this tower is when in a narrow lift shaft in a cage that keeps climbing upwards! Well worth it for the views and the information about the landmarks. We took the stairs down! We were in the tower all told about 90 minutes.

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral in Lille is a 19th-century Gothic revival structure dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Construction began in 1854 but was only completed in 1999, with a unique main facade designed by local architect Pierre-Louis Carlier and engineer Peter Rice. The cathedral houses a crypt and a sacred art museum featuring works by artists such as Warhol and Baselitz.
We visited the cathedral on Sunday. From the outside, it appeared rather unimpressive, with a heavy, grey architectural style. But once inside, it was stunning—especially the vibrant stained glass windows and the beautifully crafted sculptures.

Every time I’m in Lille, I try to visit this place. I’m not religious or a believer at all, but I enjoy the sense of peace here. My favorite part is the front wall made of stone slabs, glowing with the sunlight streaming through. I love that Europeans are not afraid to blend modern elements into what is traditionally seen as timeless and unchanging.
Maxim B — Google review
I don’t think I’ve ever written a review for a church before but since I really enjoyed my visit, I’ll make an exception! I spent about 20 minutes inside. At the back of the church, there are explanations for each shrine about the art, paintings, and/or statues you can see, also available in English. The decorations in general are very nice. The exterior is original, and inside you can find the story of the church’s construction.
N V — Google review
When i got to the church for a visit on a saturday noon, it was so crowded with people on their best clothes for mass. A nice sight to see locals with their religion. The church itself is nice with a mix of modern and gothic architecture and many arts displayed for the visitors to see.
Mike A — Google review
I had the pleasure of visiting Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral today, and it left me in awe. This cathedral is a stunning blend of history, art, and spirituality — from its contemporary exterior to the richly detailed interiors. The stained-glass windows are absolutely breathtaking, filling the space with color and light in a way that feels both majestic and intimate. Each chapel is beautifully preserved, with intricate altars, ornate mosaics, and artwork that tells centuries of stories. One of the highlights was the altar under the towering stained glass panels, glowing softly with red votive lights — a sacred and serene corner that invites you to pause and reflect. I also appreciated the scale model of the cathedral displayed inside, which offered a fascinating look into the architectural vision and construction history. The mix of Gothic and modern design throughout the cathedral makes it truly unique — especially the bold, minimalist main altar contrasted against the more traditional chapels. Whether you’re interested in architecture, religion, or simply want a quiet, inspiring place to explore in Lille, Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille is a must-visit. It’s a space where past and present coexist beautifully — peaceful, grand, and full of wonder.

Construction of this historic cathedral began in 1854 and took over a century to complete. Visiting it was a moving experience that truly inspired a sense of reverence.

Expect a 30 to 45 minute wait if you don't get tickets ahead of the visit. What can I say it's Notre Dame

What a beautiful church in the heart of the city center. The main entrance is up a flight of steps. You're immediately drawn to the backlit alabaster and round stained glass windows.

Nestled in the heart of Lille, the Grand Place, also known as Place Charles de Gaulle, is a stunning central square that showcases the city's rich history and architectural beauty. This expansive area is lined with charming terrace restaurants and features remarkable structures like the ornate Vieille Bourse and the historic Theatre du Nord. The square's centerpiece is the elegant fountain dedicated to La Deesse, a goddess commemorating Lille's resilience during its 1792 siege.
Large, open square in the centre of Lille. Monument and fountain in the centre, some beautiful buildings facing into it along with lots of shops, restaurants and bars. Popular place to sit and watch the world go by.

France, a country notorious among travelers for its challenging reputation, turned out to be far more charming than I expected. And for me, Lille had even more appeal than Paris. If I ever return to France, there’s no question I’ll be coming back to Lille.

Lille is a beautiful city. The buildings are so architecturally stunning. Plenty to see and do on our 3 days trip. Lots of restaurants and coffee, patisseries. Yummy. Our hotel Mercure grand place was extremely good value and breakfast fabulous. Will visit again when its maybe not so hot 🥵

Only had an hour in Lille before heading for the ferry at Calais so of course we headed straight for the Grand Place & the surrounding streets of the Vieux-Lille to look at the buildings & soak up some Lille vibes….& it was all positive apart from one thing - the stench of the sewers :/
Toxteth G — Google review
The areas of the town squares are nice. There are many nice decorations around and some good stores where people can buy stuff. One thing I don't like is the fact that cars are allowed to operate within the pedestrian area, with no traffic lights and no signs. Really, man? Who's dumb idea was that? People who walk and cyclists can get hurt, especially children. This stupidity was abolished in 99% of the European cities I've visited, except for Lille. Seriously... Compared to Szeged, Charleroi, Novi Sad and Timișoara, which are superior cities, Lille sucks in that case. 👎 Those are a few examples. ☝️ I've visited many cities all across Europe and Asia. Naming all of them would take 100 days. I know Lille can become good. It really needs better laws and improvements. Other than that, I see good things too. The surroundings look nice. 👍

Bloempot is a trendy Flemish restaurant located in Lille, known for its innovative approach to cuisine. The menu is crafted around seasonal produce, showcasing a blind trust in nature's ingredients and suppliers. Chef Florent Ladeyn, a Top Chef finalist, brings notoriety to the restaurant with his creative dishes. Housed in a former carpentry workshop on picturesque rue des Bouchers, the restaurant features recycled decor that adds to its eclectic charm.
An incredible food experience in beautiful surroundings and fantastic service. Cannot recommend highly enough! Merci beaucoup for making our first anniversary so special!

We went here for dinner on a Friday night. The venue is great. There’s a beautiful entrance that leads to the restaurant. We decided on the full experience. Basically a surprise menu with drinks. We had a great evening and the food is great. Some things weren’t as expected though. Although it was a full experience, a drink with the first and last course wasn’t included. That was an extra €50 we didn’t expect to spend when we booked as it was supposed to be a *full* experience. All other courses did come with a pairing. The drinks were mostly wine, except for one beer. I like beer, but this beer was pretty bad. Lastly we were a bit surprised that we had to share a small piece of meat as the main course. Overall we had a great evening out and this restaurant ended up being some great value for money. I would definitely recommend trying Bloempot at least once.

Incredible!!! This was a treat from the entry way down an unassuming alley to the rustic decor. The food was a surprise with each of the courses. Each was tantalizing and paired with the perfect non-slcoholic option (because we don't drink, but they had alcohol options as well). Everything was flavorful, locally sourced, organic, and perfect!!! We thoroughly loved it and would highly recommend!!!
Holly C — Google review
Great restaurant with good service and an imaginative and interesting menu. The savoury courses were excellent but the sweet courses a little disappointing. The alcohol pairing was very different to the norm.
Andy P — Google review
Fantastic surprise menu for €60 created using local ingredients. There’s an option to get alcoholic or non alcoholic pairings as well This was my favourite meal after 2 months of travel around Europe. The food was perfectly cooked and creative. Hats off to the chef! I highly recommend this place!

An excellent meal with an interesting progression! A very modern take on the local cuisine which is worth trying. On the night we visited they gladly fit us in despite being quite busy. The meal was a little slow (no problem for us) but each dish was well worth the wait.
Jacob Z — Google review
Loved this place which serves quality & creative dishes, made with local products only. The staff was lovely and took the time to talk us through each course of the meal. The atmosphere was fancy but still cosy and warm (industrial design). You can expect to spend at least 2-3h there! Would definitely go back again someday
My-Linh T — Google review
Unique, charming and cozy restaurant, starting with the little stone path to the entrance. Service was efficient and friendly, including the explanations of each dish. There was a bit of "sameness" in the first three courses - I really started craving something with more punch & presence. It came, thankfully in the chicken & merguez dish. All is all - the food experience was fine - not amazing - as indicated by us counting down the courses. The pairing was disappointing - I misread and thought that you could choose a wine pairing or a beer pairing. I didn't know it was a combo - but more beer in the bunch than I would have liked. I would recommend the experience to others, but I don't expect that I would go back myself.

Brasserie
French restaurant
Brasserie La Chicorée is a down-to-earth restaurant with a covered terrace that offers local dishes. It's famous for its Chicoree, made from chicory roots grown in the region and added to water, milk or coffee for a distinctive brew. The place stays open until the wee hours of the morning and is popular among locals for its French and Flemish cuisine.
I recently dined here, and overall, it was a great experience. The meal itself was fantastic—fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. I particularly enjoyed the variety on the menu, and everything I tried was spot on. The mojito I had was also excellent, perfectly mixed and refreshing, which added a nice touch to the evening. However, the service left a bit to be desired. While the staff was friendly, our server seemed somewhat disengaged and lacked enthusiasm when taking our order. It felt as though they weren't fully attentive, which slightly took away from the otherwise enjoyable experience. That said, the quality of the food more than made up for it, and I would still recommend for a good meal in Lille.

Was here with my wife during a two days stay in Lille to have lunch ordered a Flemish Beef Stew with Frites and Gingerbread and it was really good of taste the price was also reasonable besides the weather was that excellent so we enjoyed ourselves sitting outside on the terrace 😊

A wonderful, inviting place that welcomes dogs and offers English-language options and is just generally a wonderful spot. Plus they serve food all day, while a lot of other places in this city only start dinner at 7:00 PM!
Shannon R — Google review
This was a very traditional restaurant and the decor was cute. But it was clearly a bit of a tourist trap. I would have avoided it based on the reviews but a friend was already seated by the time I arrived. The food was average at best, albeit good value with the pre-fixe. The mussels were gritty, and my goat cheese salad was lacking dressing. The crepe was dry and needed lemon. We asked three times for water but none arrived, although the service generally was pleasant. The house red wine was lovely though!

Great place to come for a great food. Me and my wife in Lille only 4 days in July and all 4 days been La Chicorée. The place offers a warm welcoming atmosphere. The food here is absolutely delicious, every dish we tried was bursting with flavour. The staffs are so nice and friendly. We would like to thanks mademoiselle Myriam and monsieur Didier for a great service. Of course will come back again and would recommend to travellers here for a great food. Merci, passe une bonne journèe.
Micky R — Google review
I was initially hesitant to try this restaurant because of the low rating and reviews but I am glad I did give it a try. The location is very central and perfect for tourists and locals alike. This is a large and very busy restaurant so the service can be a bit slow but once the order is taken the food does arrive in a good time frame. The menu itself offers a wide range of French classic and Flemish cuisine. Prices are fairly ok for the location. The beef tartare was my favourite but the Welsh cheese dish was also very nice bit too heavy for me. Once the rush is over the waiters are actually very friendly and nice. Will come again.

Le Braque, nestled in the charming Old Lille, is a true culinary gem led by chef Damien Laforce. Its cuisine stands out for its commitment to seasonality and precision, offering dishes inspired by hunting and foraging. The simple yet refined menu features discovery options in 5, 6, or 7 courses to be enjoyed during evenings and weekends.
A unique place filled with the passion of the chef, whose dishes are refined to perfection. Each dish has the perfect texture and balance of flavors. in addition, the assortment of wines and champagnes is very wide. The whole experience is complemented by excellent waiter service. I highly recommend trying the 7-service menu, the squid and the hare are outstanding. Thank you immensely for a wonderful evening, I will definitely be back on my next visit to Lille 🩷

We were hoping to have a Michelin-starred meal during our latest visit to Lille but the three city-centre restaurants were all closed. Instead we went to Le Braque. Our experience was mostly good with just a few rough edges. The food was fantastic. We chose the seven course option and it was all delicious, particularly the pigeon, the veal dish and the green beans with the fish mousse. We also went for the four glasses of wine option and they were all very good. The dining area is nice and felt like a buzzing bistro more than a stuffy high-end eaterie. Service was..... inconsistent. It wasn't bad or rude at all. However we had a few very long waits between courses, particularly during the desserts. At one point we were served a course we'd already had. There were only three servers working and they were all very busy so it's forgivable. Feels like an extra staff member would come in handy. Great food, great atmosphere, service just needed a bit of tweaking.

Great food, reasonably priced tasting menu - 6 fantastic courses for €59 at the counter - and great wine pairings. Staff were kind and friendly, and were sweet enough to replace a course I'm allergic to. I found this spot on the Michelin site, and can't help thinking they'll get a star soon. So many great flavours, beautiful presentation. Can't ask for more! Would return!
Olivia G — Google review
Interesting 6 courses done well. Waiter was great with my allergy to hazelnuts and had a dish modified to fit me. Menu was only in French. They had some difficulty explaining the pieces in each course however all of it was tasteful and artistically displayed. They were prompt between each course and contentious of silverware for the next round. We chose the window seat at a bar in the corner. It was intimate and lovely to watch the people walking on the street.

Excellent food, great flavour combinations, with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. This place is on the cusp of getting a Michelin star, it has to be anytime soon as the food was just amazing. My friend and I went for the 6 courses, and we were super impressed with every single one of them, great ingredients and the chef really succeeded in making each of the ingredients sing and in harmony with each other. The service was very good, staffs were all very friendly and helpful. We had a fantastic evenings!

I chose this restaurant for my birthday lunch and I was not disappointed. Being a relatively new restaurant during my time of visit (11 Sep), there were some teething issues, like the power cuts, but nothing really serious to distract from dining experience. I especially appreciated the service staff and chef making the effort to adapt the portion sizes to accommodate a single diner like me who wanted to try many dishes. Thank you very much! The interiors where bright, yet warm and inviting. Personally the table setting was slightly too bare for my personal liking and could be softened a little to better complement the interiors and style of service. Table bread quality could also be better. My absolute favourite has to be the fried sweetbreads with iodized gibrish sauce. The sweetbreads were cooked perfectly and did not have the usual overpowering smell and taste of offal. It was also genius to pair the mineral notes of both sweetbreads and oysters. Perhaps the only thing I could nitpick would be that the sweetbread could be cut into slightly smaller pieces to reduce the richness and increase the breading to sweetbread ratio. Overall the dining experience was good from both the food and service perspectives, especially for a new establishment!
Siwei L — Google review
A good place with menus at reasonable prices. Dishes were too much centred on mashes and cremes for my taste. It was also slightly more expensive than comparable restaurants in Lille, especially the drinks and wine list. Service started ok but as the evening went by, it became slower and slower. In the end, we waited 20 minutes for the bill to arrive.

Hamburger restaurant
La Dinette is a unique establishment known for its wonderful brunch and burger joint. However, it's not just about burgers; it also offers a wide range of French dishes that will surely surprise your taste buds. The restaurant has a cozy family atmosphere and features a soft and colorful decor with red walls, formica tables, and vintage posters. Their menu includes homemade burgers, daily Italian-inspired dishes, quiches, and pies.
We were looking for a place to take my 7-year-old son who was demanding a cheeseburger for dinner and La Dinette did not disappoint. The burgers were substantial and tasty (according to my wife and child) while I had the quiche of the day that was beautifully seasoned. I also had a glass of local beer which was recommended by the super-friendly waiter. He was really helpful and happy to chat. There was also a play area at the back that my son enjoyed. The only thing I would advise is to make sure to state how you like your burger pattie. If you don't say anything they will be cooked medium rare. However, this is more advice than a criticism. Overall, I would heartily recommend La Dinette.

Wedges and salad were fine but the burger was really really good. I had the "hot burger", one of the best i had in ages. The cook really knows burgers!!!
Ale-Watze W — Google review
We decided to go there because of google map recommendations and Routard stickers on the window. They have an interesting choice or burgers and 70-80s style decor that we quite liked. However, it took us around 40 min to get our order and they got it wrong, well-done instead of rare etc. Took us approximately 5 min to get across the bun to the meat because the meat portion was ridiculously tiny. The meat in the chicken burger resembled plywood more than anything else, it was a pressed "meat sponge" not an actual piece of chicken. They seem to relay on their past recommendations to get the customers, and they must have lowered their quality a LOT

Loved this place. The decor is awesome and the place is so well curated. Love their logo as well. Also, probably the best burger I’ve had in France. I ordered ‘The One’ which came with standard burger toppings (salad, tomato, pickle) but also a house made cocktail sauce. I could tell they use high quality beef. =) Really enjoyed the potatoes that come on the side!

These guys were my family’s saviours. After a delayed ferry meant I ended up trekking up and down the streets of old Lille looking desperately for an open restaurant at 10pm, the folks at La Dinette saved my child from having to go to bed hungry. Though they were closing, they reopened the kitchen just for us and served us the most delicious quiche (and I’m not even a fan of quiches). They also sold us some milk because all of the supermarkets were closed.

Really nice restaurant offering brunch. Kids friendly. The burgers were delicious. The ingredients fresh and tasty. Organic fresh juice with home-made brunch. The tables are a bit small. The waiters extremely friendly and helpful. Quick service. The tiramisu is delicious. Prices are reasonable (80euros for brunch, family of 4 ).

Delicious food suitable to children. The decor was very cool and there are activities to keep the kids occupied while we wait for the food. The service was excellent and my kids enjoyed their chicken strips with French fries. The best, bit for them was the gummy sweets in the end:-) I would definitely recommend this restaurant for families.

We could not have been made to feel more welcome. We went here with our 2 year old for dinner, which can be challenging itself. They made it very easy with for us. Super nice people working there, nothing was a problem. The food was great, really enjoyed what we had. Definitely try this place out. Would go again.

Great atmosphere and cute details, but honestly the food was just ok. One of the staff should work on being more professional towards customers.

They had a vision .. serve the food that we were eating as kids in the 90’s and they made it right, even better ! A nostalgic trip from the menu to the ambiance .. Check out the cordon bleue , wow, that was a tasty new interpretation of a classic cordon bleue , also don’t miss the caffe gourmand , with some unique desert made out of kinder chocolate, snickers bars and lemon cream !

The food was nice but the menu could be more varied. The service was great and I loved the 90s vibe!
