I've been in this restaurant for dinner during a business trip. We had our food pre ordered during the day so once we got there we didn't have to wait much. I had the whipped goats cheese, pickled beetroot, candied almonds as starter and the smoked haddock & pea risotto, bacon crumb, crispy poached egg as main, they were both very good. I visited this pub/restaurant on a busy Saturday evening. The atmosphere was good and we were greeted warmly by the staff. There were a good selection of dishes, not just the standard food we tend to see nowadays in restaurants. My starter, which consisted of two small oxtail cakes and a sauce was exceptional. They also make their own beer which I tried and enjoyed and, in my opinion, takes the place to the next level.
Service provided by Jonny was also of note. He told he was new to the restaurant but acted like a seasoned professional regularly checking we were satisfied and engaging well in conversation with a good sense of humour despite being very busy.

Enjoyable evening. The Beef and Brewshed Ale Pie was delicious. The pastry was so good. All four of us went for this option. Our server was very knowledgeable on the beer and wines that were available.
Desserts went down a treat. The Chocolate Water Mousse with Blackberry Compote was very rich and totally tasty. I have just visited the Dog and Partridge for a couple of drinks and I was very impressed. I have had terrible experiences with Greene King pubs where the pints were flat and the service was awful but this place restored my faith!
Jack on the bar was absolutely fantastic and his service was very good. He was polite and engaging, and showed genuine pride in his work.
The drinks were chilled and gaseous, which is what you should expect as a given but every GK pub I have been in, the drinks have been so poor. The Fox, also located in Bury St Edmonds was an awful pub. The beer was flat and the service was shocking.

My husband & I met 2 friends at the Dog & Partridge for a celebratory lunch today. The pub itself is lovely though it has limited parking.
We order our food, I have an allergy however, I'm well versed in managing it and know exactly what to avoid and try to chose items that are easily simplified. My husband placed our order stressing to the staff that I'd like the battered halloumi BUT without any of the accompaniments. Just completely plain, battered halloumi and a portion of fries.
When it arrived it was smothered in peri peri sauce. When we asked why we were told that it was better with the sauce. I explained my request was due to an allergy where upon all food was whisked away and a rather rude woman asked whether it was simply a preference. When I repeated that it was an allergy she presented an iPad to me, told me that I needed to read all of the terms and tick a box BUT if my allergens weren't on their list then my order would need to be referred to their nutrition team.
The way I was spoken to was not only rude and upsetting but also strongly gave the impression that my business was not wanted.
After reading through other reviews I've noticed one from a year ago where the person had virtually the same experience as I had today. Clearly lessons have not been learnt. We will not be returning

Had to review my review again as I feel something has changed for the better. The quality of the food that's coming out of the kitchen has improved. The plates are not as cold as previously stated in my last review of the place. Staff are and have always been friendly and helpful and the only thing I can say is I do miss when someone used to come to my table and ask if everything was okay with the meal. There is a real 'wow' factor as you enter the first floor of the Corn Exchange. It is a huge barn of a place and was packed to the rafters early on Saturday market day lunchtime.
I perused the menu on the Wetherspoons app, only to discover that every single recently introduced Gourmet Burger had sold out. Ditto the new on the menu steak and ale pudding.
The duty manager, who cleared my table, said 'they hadn't expected all the new items to sell out'.
So I settled on an 8 ounce sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and all the trimmings. With a bottle of alcohol free Stella, it was just £7.49. Remarkable value.
Not only that, the steak was cooked perfectly to the medium I had specified, the pepper sauce was really nice, the chips freshly cooked and both my drink and the food was on the table in the time I'd been to 'powder my nose'.
Don't know why I thought of that - it was my dear old mum's expression.
Anyway, despite the varied reviews for this branch of 'Spoons', I cannot fault it at all.

I’ve been wanting to do the tour for a long time and finally got round to it and glad I did. Steve was the tour guide and his knowledge of the history of Greene King and expertise in the range of beers made for a really interesting day. I had asked Paris in Wright's restaurant on Friday where would be a good place to have a decent Sunday lunch. Oakes Barn or the Mason's Arms said she. Oakes barn responded to me first, so won the gig.
So a splendid meal ensued, a large helping of roast lamb (£15.95) with nice roasties, a bowl of four perfectly cooked vegetables, a huge jug of lovely gravy and lots of mint sauce in a little pot. (I was delighted it wasn't in a sachet, unlike the pepper, which was. The only disappointment was a limp and cold Yorkshire pudding.
I was surprised nobody came to ask if everything was OK or to try and upsell the £6.50 puds. Starters, by the way are £7.50 and cauliflower cheese, as an extra to the main course, is £2.95.

Definitely worth booking as a number of tables were reserved.
Great location on edge of town centre, with cosy courtyard area to the front and comfortable bar / restaurant inside.
Prices are really good with a decent portion served at great value. We had 2 roasts (1 large pork and 1 small lamb) and a ham, eggs and chips, with a side of cauliflower cheese.
Update (June '24) - Visited again today and again, visit was all good. This time I went for Roast Pork and once again was a lot of food but definitely worth it!
Food was out quite quickly and all really tasty and fresh.
This place is also dog friendly so that's an added bonus.

I’ve been to Oakes Barn several times, and honestly, their burgers are among the best I’ve had in England. The beer selection is excellent, and the atmosphere is always welcoming — it used to be one of my favorite pubs.

Although I am far from being impecunious I couldn't help but feel a little over decadent after my recent midweek lunchtime meal at the Angel Hotel in Bury St. Edmunds.
The cost of my single course meal alone was probably more than some people have to spend for their entire week's food bill.
Their 10 oz sirloin steak was £38 and only came with 1 mushroom, 4 baby tomatoes and a small pot of peppercorn sauce and sorry I forgot one onion ring! To add a portion of tender stem broccoli and some chips to this was yet another £14. By the time you add a service charge, this brings your total for just one course to nearly £60!
I appreciate that you have to pay for quality but I couldn't help but be left feeling that this was a hard to justify over extravagance, which detracted some of the joy away from the actual meal, especially as I had an equally good steak at the Tickell Arms in Whittlesford recently with all the trimmings for less than half this cost.
By the time we added two glasses of wine to this, another £28, we were left having to share an extremely delicious chocolate mousse with raspberry sorbet between us, another £12, to avoid bankruptcy proceedings being instigated.
Despite questioning the cost with the waiter I was merely told that I could always choose something else from the menu if I so wished. Perhaps I am now dining at establishments above my station in life.
I have always enjoyed eating at the Angel but I can't help but now feel that their prices have become a little rich for my blood and that in future my visits will unfortunately have to be very limited if I am to remain solvent.

The food is generally good. The restaurant has a pleasant vibe. The staff are nice. Our most recent visit we ordered burgers which were pretty good, bang bang chicken noodles which is my favourite dish here and sausage/chips/beans for our children. I had a side of spinach which seemed like it had been cooked in the sun or something, it was just completely dry and flaky 😅 not sure what they had done with it. I do have an issue with our latest visit, as my son who's 7yrs old was served his meal 15 minutes before the rest of us. We were only told this would be the case when they had brought his plate out. I queried the reason and the server said it had always been that way to serve children quickly so that they aren't waiting but it's never happened on any of our previous visits. I've heard of this practice but my son is 7yrs old, not a baby and at the same time they didn't do that for my daughter who is 9yrs old. It just seems very silly as he was completely finished in 15 minutes and then was left waiting anyway for all of us to finish so we kind of ended up rushing our meal and it defeated the entire point of having a family meal out together. We weren't having the food due to necessity, it was for a nice time. If it was urgency we would have simply grabbed a sandwich somewhere. So I wish the restaurant would address this and query individual customers at the time of taking an order, if they require this practice to occur.

Wife had a sweet, jam sponge custard, it was soft on the top half and tasty the bottom half was hard and tough horrible to chew.
Also all tables in the corner we sat at were very sticky on the surface.

We will stick to going to greenekings Tollgate, and the Fox, both are really lovely places to visit and food is always good.

Visited on Saturday (Easter Bank Holiday Weekend). Friends that had not seen each other for over 34 years - wrong place to visit as it was impossible to sit & talk over dinner. There was a huge group of dinners that were incredibly loud. Shouting & singing as was someone’s birthday. Not a party pooper but it was really not acceptable or fair on other people eating. They were basically screaming & singing at the top of their voices. Food was nice but not what I would call amazing. Meat was cooked lovely. Drinks (cocktails & non cocktails) were OK. Non alcoholic mojitos need working on and I did send the drink back once as didn’t taste like a mojito. The new drink was no different. Really hoping the experience (noise level) was a one off as it really did need addressing but when I looked towards the bar, all staff were just staring at the group…eventually the owner went over but it was a little late. It would have been better to address this as soon as it started. Would I visit again? Maybe..Bury St Edmunds has so much choice of amazing places to eat so would try them first…..

Interested in the Sunday roast outside Cambridge therefore entered this restaurant.
The portions were not massive. But at least enough to feed.
The beef was soft and tender. But I was struggling to use the knife to cut the beef apart. Biting is more efficient than the knife.
The potatoes were hard outside. I strongly suggest you to soak the potatoes into the gravy first. Eating other items on the plate first, finish the potatoes finally.
No need to worry about gravy, the restaurant provided a big pot of gravy for the Sunday Roast.
Maybe the pork rib was not as good as the Smokeworks of Cambridge. But it was reasonable for its price and quantity.
The environment was nice and clean. Clean and roomy toilet. The staff was nice. I'm just not happy about the service of the knife ;).
Overall it's a good place in Bury St Edmunds.
As a reminder, the district is lack of toilet facilities, that includes most of the cafes. It's inevitable to pick a restaurant.

Recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. The burgers were the star of the show and I’d come back specially for that.
The ribs and brisket was well cooked. The bbq sauce on the ribs is quite sweet and fruity. Personally I prefer smokey but that’s just me.
Pulled pork very good too but heavily sauced so perhaps the meat doesn’t get to shine through as much. Again just personal taste.
Mac n Cheese was ok but not amazing for my taste. Perhaps the only thing that was a bit of a disappointment.
Chips are ok, fairly standard.
Cheesecake was very good, only bettered by the now shut down Whipped in London.
Also worth noting it got quite busy and loud with the Saturday evening drinkers coming in.
But overall very good and definitely going back for burgers.

Excellent place. Nice atmosphere, lots of seats and friendly staff. Great beer selection from their own brewery, even managed to get a proper Black IPA. They do the darker beers very well and I'd reccomend them.

We live in Bury and we choose this as our local. They are fantastic, they always have a great selection and they treat customers well. This is a brilliant no nonsense pub. Staff are always super friendly, the atmosphere is always fantastic (photo from the end of the night outside when all patrons have gone home...except us)

I was just looking for a gentle nightcap after a delightful dinner and walked in to this incredibly friendly and welcoming group of people eager to talk to anyone who came through the door. The pub was warm, inviting, and full of banter -- I would have stayed all night if I could! When I asked to make a slight late change to my order it was done with no fuss even although my beers had already been packed. My beers arrived within 2 days of order well packed with no damages. I recently went to The King's Arms Hotel, Westerham, Kent three weeks ago and attempted to buy a pint of either Abbott or IPA draught bitter but neither was available! As usual over the last few months, the manager is "not available" either! Beer quality and availability has been a recurring problem as has the lackadaisical attitude of many of the bar staff! I later found that the toilet was STILL in a disgusting state with all four urinals taped off and the alternative being two stalls, one of which was blocked! I made a complaint to The Company's dedicated Complaints Website and within two days both problems were addressed, problems which had been ongoing for many months! The following Tuesday, November 2nd,I was attacked in the middle of my drink in the front bar by a miniskirted thug I later found out to be a manager, threatening to call the police on me and acting hysterically, making lying accusations and repeating a phrase I had used in the confidential complaints to the Company! I made a subsequent complaint about this outrageous behaviour towards a 68 year old disabled pensioner with heart problems and Greene King's attitude was to bar me!

We stayed at one of your establishments this weekend on Fri/Sat/Sun night in Forest Row as we were volunteers at a nearby event. Nothing wrong with the accommodation, the staff were very welcoming, the food was good. What I am not happy with is your pricing structure. We booked quite far in advance because the price advertised was reasonable, unfortunately my friend went ahead with the booking without realising that we were not given any kind of deal for booking three consecutive nights, but we're in fact charged different rates per night resulting in our stay totalling £267.50 each plus, we had our evening meals there each night. I have stayed at other hotels in your chain in the past and paid the exact price that was advertised. It seems you have based your prices on demand over that period rather than giving your customers an incentive to come back. We won't be.
