Yonaha Beach, also known as Yonaha Maehama Beach, is a picturesque white-sand shoreline on Miyako Island. It stretches for about 7 kilometers and offers a serene environment for relaxation and swimming. The beach is well-equipped with amenities such as a cafe, water sports rentals, parking lot, showers, and toilets. Its expansive coastline allows visitors to find their own space away from the crowds and enjoy activities like wind sports.
There is only 8 places in this world which have this kind of pristine-torquoise waters: the Bahamas, Maldives, Palawan (the Philippines), Bora Bora, Zanzibar, Whitsundays Island (Australia), Turk and Caicos and, of course, Miyako-jima, Japan. And it is exactly Yonaha Maehama Beach that has this surreal waters. So beautiful. You can literally walk 100 meters into the middle of the sea and water level is still only at your ankle. Combining with the bridge on the left side, it really makes Yonaha Maehama Beach a true paradise on earth. And among the 8 places that offer pristine turquoise water, I dare to say that Miyako-jima and Yonaha Maehama in particular is the most peaceful and accessible one, as there are direct flights from big Japanese cities and the Airbus A321/Boeing 737 can easily land in the Miyako airport.

Beautiful wide beach with very fine sand and astonishing water colors! The are also plenty of fish swimming around you as well!
Artur B — Google review
It is a beautiful beach with amazing sand and even a bathroom. Additionally there are many services that offer banana boats and jet skis. I would recommend visiting here eapecially barefoot.
Daniel — Google review
Crystal clear water, like the best swimming pool in the world.
Lotem A — Google review
Truly one of the most beautiful beaches in Okinawa. Powdery white sand. Stunning stretch of coastline where you can easily find your own little paradise. The ocean here is a mesmerizing shade of aqua perfect for swimming or simply soaking in the view. Bonus: free parking, showers, and restroom.
Lillian Y — Google review
This beach is absolutely stunning — crystal-clear turquoise water, powdery white sand, and peaceful surroundings. Whether you’re swimming, relaxing, or just taking in the view, the vibe is pure serenity. The contrast of the vibrant sea against the lush green island in the distance makes it feel like a postcard come to life. Definitely one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever visited!
Vladimir M — Google review
Really beautiful beach. I loved it.
Horvath F — Google review
After touring around all the beaches on Miyakojima and nearby islands, Yonaha is the best beach for suntanning for me. It is easy to access and has free parking. There are sun beds renting services available, there is a cafe on the beach and a shower/toilet. The beach itself is very long, with amazing soft white sand. There are more shallow areas further towards tokyu hotel for the ones coming with kids. In the evening you can be lucky to view amazing sunset, if not too cloudy. The only thing I wouldn’t come here for is snorkeling: haven’t really seen any fish here.

Cape Higashi-Hennazaki, situated on the easternmost tip of Miyako Island, is a renowned destination known for its breathtaking sunrise views and well-maintained paths surrounded by lush vegetation. This two-kilometer-long cape is considered one of Japan's '100 Most Beautiful Urban Parks' and offers mesmerizing vistas of the emerald sea. During late spring and early summer, the cape is adorned with blooming Easter lilies, adding to its natural charm.
Personally, it’s an unforgettable place for me so my review is very biased. The ticket to the lighthouse is 300yen and you have to take 97 steps to reach the top. The surrounding areas are free to explore and parking that was a 10-minute walk from the cape was also free.
K B — Google review
Great scenic places. You can go on top of the lighthouse for 300 and if you'll be lucky tonight the cashier from time to time is plain music!
Artur B — Google review
Great scenic view of the southern tip of the island. Lots of parking with kids playground.
Hayden T — Google review
This beautiful spot is located in the southeast of Miyako Island. The iconic lighthouse is just a 5-minute walk from the free parking lot. If you enjoy hiking while taking in stunning coastal views, this is the perfect destination.

When I climbed the tower, I saw a breathtaking view. The wind was strong, but the sea was beautiful, and I was moved. It’s a great spot to visit while on a drive.
TMK — Google review
I climbed the lighthouse and enjoyed a beautiful view. I walked down to an area where a couple boats were parked and saw sea turtles swimming around the blue water! The beach area was lively.
Snoopy T — Google review
Pretty scenic viewpoint when you can spot the clear difference in the color in two body of water at either sides of the lighthouse.

Beautiful scenery! I went there on a monday at around 6PM. There were few clouds and almost no people around! If you have a car while visiting Miyakojima, make sure to visit this spot!

Sunayama Beach is a picturesque cove on Miyako Island, featuring white sand and turquoise waters. The beach is easily accessible from downtown Miyako, with hotels, restaurants, and souvenir stores nearby. It stretches for about 360 meters and offers amenities such as parking, showers, and toilets. Visitors can enjoy the stunning sunset over Irabu Island from this popular spot.
This is an amazing beach – truly a hidden gem! The sea is beautifully blue with stunning gradients, and the natural surroundings are breathtaking, with rocks and cliffs lining the shore. The sand is soft and clean! Not many people come here often, which is why the beach remains so pristine. One of the best beaches in Miyakojima! Highly recommended! 🏝️✨🌊⛰️💙

Sunayama Beach is a stunning spot known for its soft white sands and crystal-clear waters. Its infinite shallow water area makes it perfect for wading and relaxing. The iconic natural rock arch adds a unique charm, making it great for photos and peaceful strolls. It’s an ideal place to soak up the sun and enjoy serene ocean views away from the crowds.
Stephanie W — Google review
This was our favorite beach on Miyakojima – actually, our favorite across all four Okinawan islands we visited! This is the place where you really understand what "Miyako Blue" means – the water is stunningly clear and vibrantly blue, almost unreal. It seems to be quite a well-known beach in Asia, as we noticed tourist buses stopping by regularly. The groups typically just take photos and leave within minutes, so it never felt crowded or disruptive. Facilities are minimal: there’s a paid shower and restroom next to the parking lot, but nothing directly on the beach – no shops, bars, or food stalls, which actually adds to the untouched, peaceful vibe. We did a bit of snorkeling – you can see some fish, but it’s nothing extraordinary in that regard. Still, the water alone is worth the visit. Highly recommend for a relaxing beach day surrounded by natural beauty!
Ákos G — Google review
First sunset in Miyako and I Will never forget it, see photos, great for swimming, pristine water. The beach itself is small but most definitely not to miss in Miyakojima
Ekaterina N — Google review
My favourite beach in Miyakojima! Especially at low tide, you can enjoy soaking up sunshine at knee level waters. The rock formation at the sides gives the beach a more distinctive character.
Adrian T — Google review
This beach is so pretty and peaceful. You can see fish with the naked eye and the water is so clear. You can chill under the cave if you need shade. Overall one of my fav beaches here in Miyakojima
Selina L — Google review
Stunning. Go when the sun is still out but slowly setting. Many tiny fish come out at this time and jump out of the water.

Aragusuku Beach is a serene ocean retreat located on the eastern part of Miyako Island. Unlike other beaches in the area, it is sheltered from strong waves and wind, making it ideal for families and adventurous travelers alike. The beach boasts clear shallow waters with vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish, perfect for snorkeling. With its expansive sandy shores, Aragusuku Beach offers a relaxing environment for strolling and enjoying the tranquil surroundings.
Excellent place for scuba diving Will need to arrive no later than 7:00 am in order to have parking space. There are beach umbrellas with chairs and a table for 2000yen 1000yen for parking Plenty of fish and Coral There is also a small number of turtles Will definitely come again
Jin T — Google review
Probably the most perfect place to snorkel!! In a very shallow area, a lot of fishes and even sea turtle are moving around so that anyone having equipement could easily enjoy the oceanic beauty. Unbelievable how can all these species can live in this shallow water, this close to the shore.
Crystal K — Google review
Aragusuku Beach isn’t the most stunning beach in Miyakojima, but it definitely has its own charm — especially if you’re hoping to see sea turtles. I was lucky enough to spot three swimming together while snorkeling! (Sadly, I only have GoPro footage, no pics.) I also saw a huge pufferfish. Parking isn’t free, but it’s organized, and you can also rent a table, chairs, and an umbrella at a reasonable price. I rented a life vest from a friendly guy in the parking lot — he also shared some great tips about other beaches around the island, which was super helpful. There are snacks available right by the beach, including Okinawa soba. We tried the hot dogs, and they were surprisingly good and affordable. Overall, a relaxing place with a unique wildlife experience. Worth a visit if you're on Miyakojima, especially if you're into snorkeling.
Ákos G — Google review
I visited this beach on November 9th, and there were no beach loungers, deck chairs or beers unlike what you might see in other photos: maybe those are there just in 'summer' months. There was only a small kiosk renting snorkelling gear, like fins and snorkels 🤿. Both the fins and the snorkel cost 1000 yen each (so 2000 yen in total). I rented both, but honestly, the fins were completely useless as the water is shallow for quite a long stretch from the shore: just with the snorkel and a little exploring, I was able to spot some absolutely massive sea turtles, about a meter long, swimming just a few centimeters away from me....truly incredible! The seabed is mostly sandy, but there are also underwater rocks, some coral formations, and a few weirdly beautiful tropical fish here and there. The weather on November 9th was mostly cloudy, not much sun, but still warm, around 28°C. Cheers!
Terzo O — Google review
I rate this beach 5 stars because it was one of the best snorkeling in my life. Only La Digue in Seychelles provided better spots. The beach itself is very nice, but not amazing, but you will definitely see many different fish in a HUGE amount, a very nice experience!
Valentin L — Google review
Free parking lot if you arrive early enough, otherwise ¥1000. Free toilets and shower facilities, a couple of people greeted us to introduce the beach. I though they would charge us or try to sell us something but did not. Food is available from the cart, drinks from a few places. Seats with no umbrella are free. Wave size and depth makes this very suitable for kids. It’s a very easy snorkel, going further out it gets better for adults. We saw three kinds of clown fish, and there are turtles if you look hard. They are pretty chilled just chewing the grass. Staff in concessions were all helpful and friendly to us.
Fergus M — Google review
My favorite beach on island! Well maintained and you can rental life vest, floats, shoes and snorkeling gear. There’s showers and restrooms. Parking was ¥2000
Shawndel W — Google review
Unfortunately there was a lot of plastic trash this morning, there’s no shade and the beach felt crowded with people on snorkeling tours. The 2,000 yen parking is a bit expensive unless you stay here the whole day.

Irabu Island is a picturesque destination connected to Miyako Island by the longest toll-free bridge in Japan, the 3,540-meter Irabu Bridge. (Translated by Google) During my four-day stay, there were days when I didn't meet anyone on the Nichido trail. LOL😆 There weren't so many people walking around that I wondered what everyone was doing... Even if I did hear it once in a while, it was mostly people who had immigrated there, so I don't think I ever heard the local dialect. But everyone I met was kind and helpful. There are many sightseeing spots. If you cross the bridge, you can reach Miyakojima in 15 to 6 minutes. From there, you can go around the island by turning right and then left. I conquered three large bridges that span from Miyakojima, and all of the views were truly beautiful and precious! This time, it was a carefree trip with two aunties without much of a plan, so next time I'll definitely research the places I want to go and definitely go again! Photographs of Irabu Ohashi Bridge from Irabu Island can be taken from the Makiyama Observation Deck, a view from the field a little further down the road from here, and from a short distance on Route 204 to the right after crossing the Ohashi Bridge. You can take pictures of the bridge. In particular, go down from the parking lot on the Irabu Island side of this bridge to the sandy beach at the foot of the bridge and take a look. The clear sea with the sandy beach in the background, and the sea color changing from pale blue to deep dark blue in concentric circles, offers a picturesque view. Yoshino Kaigan Beach, situated on the east coast of Miyako Island, is a popular destination for snorkeling enthusiasts. The beach boasts colorful coral reefs and an array of tropical fish, making it an ideal spot for beginners and families with children. Visitors may also have the chance to witness sea turtles laying eggs during certain times of the year. Additionally, Boraga Beach nearby offers opportunities for snorkeling and sea kayaking, while featuring a mysterious limestone cave with impressive stalactite formations.
Many fish and corals There are parking spaces, shower facilities and shuttle bus to the beach for 2000 yen Good place for scuba diving Will come again
Jin T — Google review
“Very friendly fishes” had to pay a 1000 for parking but you have included shuttle bus and showers and changing room. Beach is nice but of trash here and there but for snorkelling is the best! I was just literally few meters from the beach and the fishes started to come around me! Many species! Very recommended to come here! Many families as well!
TancReady — Google review
The water is very clear and many fishes can be seen. Great for snorkeling. Snorkeling gears are available for rent. ¥500 parking fee and you can enjoy shuttle service and shower facilities.
Law L — Google review
There are two car parks here - one (for about 20 cars) at the entrance for swimmers at Yen 500 and the other (for about 5 free car parks) near the beach for those who come here just to have a look. I had swum before arriving here in my swimming gear only on August 18, 2019, and said that I just wanted to have a look of the beach. As a result, I was allowed to drive down and up the rather steep and winding slope to and from the beach!
Peter C — Google review
Beach with lot of potential, but full of trash and ran by a useless parking company. Never come with your kids here, they could get infected stepping on the glasses/cans. There are hundreds of nice beaches nearby that you can see the same kind of nature and way less trash. I came here many times, but last time we came in a cloudy/rainy day and there was no one, so we went all the way down and found free parking. The parking guy came all the way down with his bus and his pride to tell us, in a threatening way, that parking downhill is not allowed. We checked this with the local authorities and parking downhill is allowed, so please ignore them if they try to get money from you.
Keko O — Google review
Parking at the top costs ¥500, there are a couple of free places at the bottom. From the top it’s a long walk to the bottom, no idea how people do it, we drove to the bottom. Beach with loads of old corral washed up on it, facilities were all closed when we got there but the toilet and showers looked broken. Snorkeling looked pretty interesting, I had no time to do it. If going with kids arugusuku is better.
Fergus M — Google review
The best beach I ever visited, in the terms of experience and beauty. But all the rest is a little complicated. Parking, shower and changing room are uphill. And shuttle-van brings you downhill and then back. If you come to serf, you may park downhill (if space available), and there is fresh water to wash your board. Snorkeling is wonderful here. Everything is literally right after you step in the water. A lot of coral formations and thousands of fishes. But watch the tide schedule. The beach itself is mainly white sandy with many fragments of dead corals. Because of downhill / uphill story, not many people coming here. There are also tables and chairs under large umbrellas, but I didn’t ask how much it cost. I hardly could get my face out of water, because fished are charming. To see something like this, in Thailand people go two hrs by boat and then do scuba diving. However, here it is right next to the surface and next to the beach.
Alexander R — Google review
This might be the off season being December, but it was still 27 degrees... The beach sadly was filthy... The waves were really strong, lots of surfers, due to this.... The beach seems to be a mixture of sand and broken coral, sadly due to the weather previously the beach was full of rubbish from fishermen, things lost at sea and people not being respectful of the planet. I found waste from Thailand, Korea, Vietnam and also Japan (possibly Chinese too, but not 100% sure). I took away one bag of rubbish, but I personally would not recommend coming here as the island has so many beautiful beaches, but this one in the off season is not one of them. I got one of the 10 or so, free car parking spaces, otherwise it's a long walk up the hill and 500 yen.

I went out to the sandy beach and walked along the coastline, but when I saw people coming out, I realized that I could walk for the first time, which was great, but it was a little scary because it was so high up. Boraga Beach, located on the stunning Miyakojima island, is a hidden gem that promises a perfect day by the sea. This picturesque sandy beach is ideal for those looking to unwind or engage in exciting water activities like snorkeling and kayaking. Nestled within a serene bay, Boraga Beach features a unique swimming pool filled with underground water, offering an alternative to ocean dips. The beach's vibrant atmosphere attracts surfers as well, making it lively yet inviting.
The only beach I saw surfers around the island so far. Vigorous vibe, but beware of the rocks if you plan to dip in the water here though.

Good snorkeling. Hire parasol for 1500 each. Saw turtles and a lot of other sea life. Corals are dieing but I think that’s everywhere on this island. Worth a visit. We went on Sunday and wasn’t too busy
Ben M — Google review
Clean, beautiful, private, good for snorkeling. DANGER: once we saw poisonous snake in the water. Note: I don’t think it’s special to this beach. We saw them in other places on Miyakojima and Ishigaki.

great to stay here. you can take free shower. despite of visiting Yoshino and Aragusuku beaches, we came here to stay for half a day. kids can enjoy seeing and snorkeling, in addidtion if you can swim a bit, you may dive in around the big rock on your right in the sea. it may be 3 m in depth. you may swim out on the coral reef with seeing tropical fish and colorful reef. you must put on reef.shoes and long pants with snorkel equipment.

Sunset Beach, located near the vibrant American Village in Chatan, Okinawa, is a must-visit for sunset enthusiasts. This lively beach offers not only stunning views of the sun dipping below the horizon but also a range of activities to enjoy throughout the day. With its spacious shoreline and scenic promenade facing west, it’s an ideal spot for relaxation and recreation.
Nice place to spend hours, not many people come to swim. Very clean and calm. You can shower at the bathroom area.

With all respect, this one should not even be called a "beach" as it is obviously not possible to swim here while the sand is black and hard.
Quang T — Google review
There are restrooms which close at 19/19.30. There are vending machines for beverages. The beach is not "into the wild" but the view is nice!
Andrea G — Google review
It's a stunning spot to watch the sun go down as the name suggests. I would recommend surf shoes even though it's a very sandy beach. There isn't much to see snorkelling there, most of the sea grass appeared dead. There were lots of what I think are sea cucumbers which are fascinating for the kids but very little in the way of fish. I think the lack of fish is mainly because of the nets to stop box jellyfish. It's good to bring really young children as it's a very gradual drop off in the water. And only a few steps from the boardwalk to beach. We stayed at the Hilton for a week during August (so peak season) and always saw a life guard there but it is a very safe spot for paddling and swimming but not much for snorkelers.

The Irabu Ohashi Bridge, spanning 3,540 meters, is a remarkable structure connecting Miyako Island to Irabu Island. This toll-free bridge has become a symbol of the area since its opening in 2015 and plays a vital role in enhancing transportation, medical services, and essential utilities between the islands. Travelers are drawn to the bridge not only for its practicality but also for the stunning views it offers of the surrounding seascape.
Such a cool place to take in the beautiful emerald ocean. They also have a couple of places you can pull over on the bridge to take pics and videos from the middle. So thoughtful.
Liz W — Google review
Epic, out-of-this-world place with the feeling of a car literally going up into the beautiful sea of Miyako-jima. You can never get bored crossing this bridge.
Quang T — Google review
Irabu Ohashi Bridge is incredibly long and offers some of the most stunning views of the ocean in Miyakojima. The water below is a beautiful shade of blue and changes color depending on the sunlight and weather, making the drive feel like you're floating above a tropical paradise. There are a few parking spots along the way where you can safely stop, get out, and take photos. Definitely worth doing—some of the best views of the bridge and the water are from these pull-off areas. If you're visiting Miyakojima, driving across this bridge is a must. Even if you’re not heading to Irabu Island for anything specific, the drive alone is worth it.

Shigira Beach, located on Miyako Island in Japan, is a popular destination for swimming and snorkeling, offering the chance to encounter sea turtles in their natural habitat. The beach area provides rental umbrellas for visitors' convenience. Situated within the expansive Shigira Resort, the beach is part of a larger leisure complex that includes hotels, golf courses, onsens (hot springs), restaurants, and souvenir stores. The resort caters to various budgets with a range of accommodation options.
Shigira Beach is a stunning destination for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The vibrant coral reefs are teeming with life, showcasing a variety of colorful tropical fish and the chance to swim alongside graceful sea turtles. The water clarity is exceptional, making it easy to appreciate the underwater beauty. During my visit, I was amazed by the diversity of marine life: corals and turtles. Overall, Shigira Beach is a must-visit spot for anyone looking to explore the wonders of the ocean!

Beautiful beach with easy, shallow entry, clear water, beautiful colors. We spent two day. Here and hav the best of fun. You can swim few hundred meters to man made rest place, you can snorkel and see turtles and many fishes. Just gorgeous
Blanka K — Google review
A beautiful white sand beach and lagoon with calm and shallow water. Coral reefs are very lively and beautiful, you can see many kinds of tropical fish and sea creatures including clown fish, sea urchin, see snake, angelfish, lagoon triggerfish, etc. The water is not as clear as other crystal clear beaches in Miyako, but it’s clear enough to see the sea creatures. It’s worth visiting as you can enjoy schools of beautiful fish in tranquil bay. Many snorkeling tours start from this beach. My 5yo and 4yo enjoyed snorkeling here too. You might be able to see sea turtles too (according to the hotel concierge there are 3 to 4 turtles around in the bay) . You can rent snorkel gears at the beach house. Otherwise make sure to bring your own snorkel and safety systems including life jacket and reef shoes. Be aware of the tide conditions and timings, when I visit there in July I was told by the hotel concierge that you need to snorkel in the morning not the afternoon. Conveniently located for those who stay at the Shigira Beach Resort. Those who come by car need to pay parking fee.
Ayaka I — Google review
One of best snorkeling spots. Be aware of one fish species which is aggressive and might threaten you. They will probably not bite or hurt you. Usualy those fishes swim in pair following you from behind or just under you. They might follow you up to hundred meters, atack from behind and catch on your fins. Especially if your fins are other than black color. Size of the fish is about 30 to 50 cm.
KONO — Google review
Best beach for snorkeling -just make sure you enter the water not right in front of sun beds but at the place where snorkeling tours enter. There is a snorkeling gear rental shop and a canteen close to it, as well as showers and lockers. 2or 3 sea turtles live here, so there is a high chance of meeting them. Lots of coral, but make sure you come either early in the morning or after 3 pm coz 1pm is a very low tide. The water can be very clean or not so much depending on the weather.

Theme park
Ueno German Culture Village is a unique park featuring a replica Rhineland castle and a museum showcasing German toys and a segment of the Berlin Wall. Located near Ryukyus Wind Yatai Stall Village, this attraction may seem unusual in Okinawa, but it holds historical significance for the locals. Visitors can also discover a naturally formed heart-shaped rock in the sea nearby.
I didn't have time to fully explore the German Village, but I did briefly walk around a bit. It looks like this place was fun when it was new, 20 or 30 years ago. These days, it's been neglected and isn't what it used to be. It seems that there's not much money being generated here, so there's barely any upkeep beyond some landscaping. Therefore, buildings look moldy and unkempt. I bet the owners are just hanging on as the property value increases over the years. You should look at this place as just an interesting walk in the park. Free admission, but some buildings have an entrance fee. As long as you don't expect a lot, you won't be disappointed. Kids will enjoy it, especially the relaxing beach area with no waves. But, I wouldn't come here unless I was already staying in the Shigira resort area.
Stephen R — Google review
The place is a bit in ruins now Still, the structure is amazing and shows the German culture There are even parts of the Berlin Wall there The place is very big with a few people There is even a beach and a bay There is no need to buy tickets, just park the car and walk in
Jin T — Google review
Interesting place to look around. The view from the tower should be good. Recommend the SUP shop and cafe.
Ulrike H — Google review
One of the more interesting places to visit in this area. There are beautiful walking paths through the jungle, past the Breeze Bay Marina Hotel and its lovely grounds, on over to Hakuai fishing port and Waiwai Beach. In the other directions, the Hakuai Bridge goes past a deserted building that could have been a hotel, and a path that winds along the ocean through volcanic rocks that are quite picturesque (but sharp, do not touch!). At viewpoints you can see many kinds of fish swimming in the ocean. The history of the Culture Village is explained, and why it was located here. The Hakuai Bridge has interesting panels that depict scenes from German fairy tales. Good German beer is available, and there are snack shops, plus restaurants a short walk away.

Faded glory in need of a loving hand - not a theme park anymore (all closed when we came) but still great to visit, not many people which adds to the atmosphere, especially in the evening. The park is still well taken care of, only the buildings are having this haunted house image. We loved it. Right next to it is a bakery & cafe (not part of the park), so a great stop on a bicycle or car tour

Regional airport
Miyako Airport is a small but functional regional airport with limited amenities. The waiting area and seating are sufficient during non-busy periods, but may be crowded during peak holiday seasons. There are a few small restaurants before security, and a small shop with gift-style sweets, hot coffee, noodles, rice triangles, and onigiri at the gates. The observation deck offers a good view of the runways and planes. Transportation options to the city include buses or taxis.
It's a very nice and calm place. You will feel more as at small bus station in village than being at an airport. Friendly and helpful staff always smiling.
KONO — Google review
Typical rural airport. 15 mins to the city center by TAXI, around 1,600¥.
H I — Google review
A small regional airport with influence from South East Asia in its decoration, not as efficient as in big Japanese airport and the security screening process can be a bit chaotic, but at least it is right in the middle of the island. Once you get past the security gate this is not much to do, there is only a small shop selling quick food and drinks. Airport staff can speak some English.

Small but functional airport which was absolutely fine for our trip during a non busy period. I can imagine that in holiday season the available seating and small waiting area might not be quite big enough though. There are a few small restaurants available but we had hoped to buy something to eat later on the plane. No convenience stores, no real takeaway food options available so I’d advise to pick up some onigiri or sandwiches in town before heading to the airport if you wanted to eat on your flights.

Miyako Island Underwater Park is a unique attraction that allows visitors to observe the underwater world without getting wet. With 24 windows offering views of the seabed at a depth of 3-5 meters, guests can marvel at tropical fish, octopus, sea snakes, and other marine creatures. The facility is wheelchair accessible, making it suitable for visitors of all ages.
I was a little skeptical before going there but now I fully recommend it. Although I love snorkeling and watching the sea creatures while doing so, the underwater park is a great way for children or elderly or people who are simply not as fond of snorkeling themselves to see different fish and other animals of the ocean. As it is no aquarium, noone can tell you beforehand, what you will see. Our highlight was a seasnake. There was also a kind employee explaining different things. Unfortunately only in Japanese but when we asked him something in English, he was using a translation app so that he could answer our questions. As we got there only 45 minutes before closure we did not have time to look around everywhere but it seemed as if you could spend another hour there.
Ginger R — Google review
It was a cloudy day in Miyakojima, so we decided to visit the Miyako Island Underwater Park. We hadn’t seen much advertising for it, but we found it on the map and decided to go. Just a heads-up—it’s cash only, so make sure to bring some with you. The park’s design was really interesting, and we saw many fish right at the entrance and even more in the underwater viewing areas. It felt like being inside a spaceship! We even spotted Nemo (a clownfish), which was a fun surprise. I definitely recommend visiting this park, especially if you have kids—they’ll absolutely love it! .
TancReady — Google review
A great place to visit on a rainy day — perfect for families with children! Here, you can learn about different kinds of fish and discover how the underwater park was built. It’s an educational yet entertaining experience: you can finish the visit in just five minutes or spend up to half an hour exploring the fascinating world of marine life. Occasionally, the fish might not appear right away — if that happens, take a moment to wait. They might have just finished eating and wandered off for a bit. Two minor drawbacks are that some of the glass panels aren’t very clean, making it a bit hard to see clearly in certain areas. Also, there are quite a lot of stairs when going downstairs, which can be challenging for the elderly or anyone with limited mobility.
Sophie K — Google review
I saw a big seasnake, countless fishes, green, blue, yellow, all colorful. They swim freely and you look from under water. There is always plenty.

이현주 — Google review
Quite a nice little seaside park but not exceptional. In my opinion, the undersea Observatory is interesting, but there weren't so many different kinds of fish to see, and we were again unable to see the famous sea turtles of Miyako Island. There are extensive walking trails around the area and a couple of small beaches which might be very pleasant, but it was pouring rain by the time we were halfway through our visit, so we're not able to get down to the beach. It's a fun activity working with seashells and making things (for kids or anyone who likes hand crafting), and there were many different kinds of shells for sale. The cafe on the deck is quite good, had good quality filtered coffee, and nice small meals featuring local ingredients, including the locally raised beef, maguro tuna, fresh mango, etc.

Makiyama Observatory, resembling a bird, offers stunning views of Miyako island and provides a unique vantage point to see the Irabu bridge, Kurima bridge, and Ikema bridge simultaneously. The observatory is situated on a mountain named after the Maki bird and features a nature trail nearby. Visitors can enjoy various shades of blue in Miyako from this spot.
Irabu Island observatory place was very amazing and beautiful place. It takes about 5 minutes' walk to the parking lot and there is also a restroom before you going upstairs in the observatory. It is very popular and attractive where you can see a panoramic view of Irabu Ohashi Bridge. It's worth it.

You’ve got to check out this awesome observatory! It’s got a breathtaking view of one of Japan’s longest bridges. And guess what? It’s just a short five-minute hike from the parking lot. Trust me, it’s totally worth the trip!

Makiyama Observatory is definitely worth a quick stop. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the parking lot, and you’re greeted by a unique bird-shaped structure with an amazing panoramic view. You can see the stunning shades of blue in the ocean and get a great look at the famous Irabu Ohashi Bridge. Bonus points for the quirky little bus in the parking lot selling drinks and ice cream — the guy running it is super friendly and has a great sense of humor. A fun and scenic spot that’s easy to reach and very photogenic!

There is a lot of nice forest paths behind the garden (the forest at the bottom that you can see from the observatory). Terrible beach. Entering the designated swimming area is full of sharp rocks and dead coral which will cut you and cause injuries to feet and hands if you’re not careful. Said swimming area is surrounded by people kayaking or jetskiiers. Beyond that area is just a port designed for cruiseliners, fishing boats and other logistical boats. Absolutely poor planning by the city council. Just go to Sunayama or Yonoha Beaches, much better quality sand and water. Don’t waste your time here when it can be spent at better beaches.

Beautiful beach with pristine clear waters and white sand, they have a car park and some coffee stores/vending machine next to the beach, so every refueling demand from travellers should be well met. These are spots to take some epic photos as well. To reach Toguchi-no-hama you will also have to cross the Irabuohashi Bridge, which is a great experience itself. One of the top beaches on Miyakojima! The crystal clear water is great for swimming and relaxing in the water with calm waves. Beautiful fish that swim around you and we even saw a stingray. Not the best beach for snorkeling especially compared to others in the area but if you just want to relax in the water or on the beach it's perfect! There is also plenty of space on the beach so even if it's pretty busy you can have plenty of space and get away from everyone. There's a couple spots along the back wall with some shade under some trees. Otherwise there are not much more than one or two shady spots so if you don't want to be in the sun make sure you bring an umbrella.

Among the most powdery white sands of any beaches in the area. Be prepared to be burnt because there isn’t much of a shade. Parking is free, but only has about 15-20 spots. There’s a small eatery that has Blue Seal ice cream right by the beach entrance.

Site Name: Sawada-no Hama Alternative Name: In the shire of Sawada hamlet close to Shimoji-Jima Airport, numerous rocks are rolling. Farmers' market

Flea & Street Markets
Atarasu Farmers Market is a must-visit spot in Miyakojima, offering a wide array of tropical fruits and seasonal produce from the island. The market is known for its large size and diverse offerings, including Brazilian cherries 'Pitanga' and locally sourced products like tofu from Magotofu, zenzai, and doughnuts. Visitors can also sample fruit and processed products at various stalls before making a purchase.
Now this is a proper farmers market. Delectable selection of uber fresh vegetables and fruit. If I had known it would be this great, I would of been coming here from day one. The chillies look wonderful. Still retained their colours even though dried. Not at all faded. Prices for vegetables are decent, but most fruit, like melons were not cheap. Love this place, as great choice of stuffs, and it's supporting the farming community by purchasing here. Bought chillies and the freshest peppers and okra today. Also several bento boxes. The food is so fresh and tasty. The okinawa sugar quality looked above premium. It was expensive, but I will get it in the near future.

Quite an interesting market that offers all sorts of tropical fruits and other seasonal produce from the island. We found the Brazilian cherries "Pitanga" that we never had before. Also, there are other products from different restaurants/shops around like tofu from Magotofu, zenzai, and doughnuts. But it seems that if you don't arrive early enough, the popular stuff will be sold out quickly even though the market opens until 4pm. We arrived around midday to find all zenzai and tofu are gone. The umibudo is cheaper here and ready to eat with a small sauce pack inside.

Funausagibanata, located on the north part of Shimojishima island, offers a relatively good scenic spot with beautiful views of the ocean and coast. Although the big bird that used to be a highlight is now gone, visitors can still enjoy stunning sunsets and sunrises from this vantage point. There is a small path leading to an even better view, but overgrown wild grasses may deter some due to insects and spiders.
There a small path down for a better view, but wild grasses everywhere so i was afraid to go over.. lots of insect and spiders 🤣

A modern, stylish and cosy airport for one or two aircrafts. There are many charging points at the domestic area while the international area has nothing. Airport bus fits with arrival schedules only, and so long queues at car rentals!

Miyakojima City Museum is a small but insightful museum that offers exhibits on the history, cultural significance, and biodiversity of Miyako-Jima. While most explanations are in Japanese, there are summarized points for non-Japanese speakers. Visitors can expect to spend around 30 to 45 minutes exploring the two-floor museum, which is located near the Botanical Garden and sugarcane fields. It's recommended to use a translating app as not all information is translated into English.

Beaches
Funakusu Beach, located on Ikema island, offers a serene and secluded setting for a day of beach relaxation. The beach is not widely known to tourists, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful escape. While the beach may not be very wide, its uncrowded nature provides the perfect atmosphere for unwinding. Snorkeling enthusiasts will find delight in the beautiful reef just offshore, though caution is advised due to potential currents.
There are free parking spaces available near the restrooms 🚻. The entrance can be a bit tricky to locate, but once you find it, it's just a one-minute walk to the beautiful, light-blue ocean.
92 Y — Google review
The beach is rather small and not crowded which is a plus. Besides the overall look of the beach and ocean are incredible. However, this was the beach with the most garbage during our time on Miyakojima. For the plastic it is of course hard to tell, what comes from the ocean and what was thrown away right there. However, we also found a lot of freshly broken glass containers at the beach and in the water. While snorkeling we also saw a tire among glass and plastic. So sad! Another sad thing was an Asian tourist, who repeadedly stood on the corals so that he could check pictures on his device that he had taken while snorkeling. Some humans seem not to care at all!
Ginger R — Google review
There was no shower and a lot of dead coral and trash. However if you swim out far enough you can find a lot of tropical fish. I recommend a detour for this place.
Daniel — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. Tropical fish swimming around your feet and soft sand walkways between the coral. Perfect for snorkeling, make sure to at least bring goggles to see the colorful fish more clearly
Justin H — Google review
Nice beach to visit but according the sign the swimming was prohibited. Still recommending for stop there :) at least nice pictures for Insta :)
Antonín K — Google review
This is my favorite beach on the island. It’s very small and it looks like a secret place when you arrive there. You can go snorkelling but be always carefull and aware if your capacity before going far. When it’s high season you have a small shop to rent stuff and restroom. Cons of the place is the waste present everywhere on the beach. I try to clean when I come but as you know it’s unlimited from the sea.
Malik B — Google review
There is a lot of trash on this small beach, including broken glass bottles. The trash can be also found in the water…the coral reef is huge though and you can see large fish not far from shore.
Filip D — Google review
Beautiful beach, no facilities though, I would recommend you bring a bottle of tap water to rinse yourself off after swimming as there is no beach shower.

Nestled in the northeastern region of Irabu Island, "Sabautsuga" is a captivating destination that boasts a unique topography resembling a shark's mouth when viewed from Ikema Island. The name itself is derived from local dialects, with "Sabautsu" meaning well and "Gar" indicating its geographical features. Historically, residents of Sarahama had to navigate 130 steps multiple times daily to access their water supply until a simple system was established in 1966.
A beautiful spot to enjoy the coastline. Sadly it was under construction from a recent landslides when we visited. Hopefully they will fix the pathway soon!

大杉漣 — Google review
Amazing place! You must be careful because of the landslide, but if you are very careful you can reach the bottom, and from there swim during high tide to the famous blue cave, about 500m along the shore. There's some great coral here and tons of things to see. A pity about the huge amounts of plastic washed up here.
Diarmaid L — Google review
(Translated by Google) If you want to see a lot of fish near the coast in the Ira Shimochi area, there are two options: here or Nakanoshima. Be careful as you will be going down a rocky area. There are often other people there, but it's good that it's not crowded. It seems possible to try your best and swim to the Blue Cave from here, but it doesn't seem like an amateur can just go there and find out. The sea is not calm here, so there are times when it's better not to go in depending on the day.

(Translated by Google) The parking lot only accommodates about 10 cars, and there are no water, toilets, or shops nearby. You'll need to arrange food and drink in advance at places like A-Co-op. At your own risk, there's a no-entry sign at the entrance due to falling rocks! What's more, the entrance is fine, but the return trip is a hellish staircase. If you go at low tide, it's extremely shallow and there's a risk of damaging the coral reef. You can enter the Blue Cave, but high tide is recommended! Swim about 300 meters toward Sarahama Port, and you'll find it where it suddenly gets deep. There's a hole in the cliff wall, so go inside. If you're not confident in your swimming, bring a life jacket! It's pitch black deep inside the cave, so it's best to have an underwater light. The coral reef at Sabautsuga isn't as strong as at Yaehijiri, but it's still somewhat intact, so it's still suitable for snorkeling. Please take your trash with you!

One of the coolest places in Miyakojima where you can see clear, turquoise waters all next to an airport. Directly next to the carpark, there's a more rugged looking beach. Toguchi no Hama Beach, located on Irabu Island, is a hidden gem that offers an idyllic escape for beach lovers. As you stroll along its powdery soft sands, you'll be captivated by the stunning emerald green waters that stretch out before you. This crescent-shaped beach is not only visually striking but also provides a serene atmosphere due to its unspoiled surroundings and minimal crowds. While the clear water makes it perfect for snorkeling adventures, be prepared for some stronger waves.
One of the best known major beach area in Miyako, rivaling Maehama for beauty. This hits sand beach stretches for 800m wide, from inlet flowing between Irabu and Shimoji islands to the east coast.

Beautiful remote beach on Irabu island. You will probably see a lot of crabs on the pier which I enjoyed. Even if the beach is clean and the sand quite white, it’s wet on almost the whole beach which doesn’t make it a good spot if you want to lay on your towel.

1 The water is clear (Good for snorkeling) 2 Waves are a bit strong 3 Sand is soft and smooth 4 It's hard to make something with sand near water (It will collapse) 5 There are six shower booth rooms with curtains (Four minutes for 100¥) 6 You might get some brownish sticky things on your skin or clothes (Only sometimes) 7 It might be hard to get them off Conclusion Good for snorkeling and using tube and absolutely beautiful Bad for building sand castles and getting sticky things (Only sometimes)

Nature preserve
Yabiji Marine Park, located in the northern region of Miyakojima, is a stunning collection of coral reefs that beckons adventure seekers from around the globe. Accessible only by boat, this marine paradise offers some of the best diving and snorkeling experiences imaginable. A unique feature of Yabiji is its seasonal transformation; during spring tides, parts of the reef emerge above water, creating a breathtaking sight that’s truly unforgettable.
One of the best reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving ❤️
Patric S — Google review
(Translated by Google) In life, you don't often come across a view that makes you think, "I'll never forget this." But my experience at Yabiji was one of those. It's about 15km north of Miyakojima, about a 40-minute boat ride from Hirara Port. A mysterious reef that only appears when a limited time, tide timing, and weather conditions coincide. That's Yabiji. This area is known as one of the largest coral reefs in Japan, and is also registered as a "Nationally Designated Place of Scenic Beauty." I thought it was amazing when I saw it in a photo, but the moment I actually dived into the sea and was engulfed in that world, all five senses were overwhelmed. First of all, the transparency. The sea of Miyakojima is beautiful everywhere, but Yabiji takes it even further. Even when looking down from the surface of the water, the coral patterns are clearly visible, like a natural garden trapped inside glass. And the density and diversity of the coral! Table coral, branching coral, brain coral, and Pocillopsis coral... The "coral forest" blooming as far as the eye can see is so beautiful that it feels like you're swimming in a colorful flower field. Countless small tropical fish swim around, and sometimes sea turtles and large coral reefs appear leisurely. A realistic "aquarium" woven by nature spreads out before your eyes, silently and powerfully. This time, I visited on a public holiday. I went snorkeling on a tour company's boat, and the staff were very kind and supported me so that even first-timers could enjoy it with peace of mind. We were blessed with good weather, and the low tide "tidal reefs" appeared at the perfect time, allowing us to swim leisurely over the coral in the shallows. The water was shallow in some places, and the corals were so close that you could reach out and touch them, which strengthened the "sense of life" in this place. On the other hand, being exposed to the overwhelming beauty of nature made me feel a desire to protect it. The tour guide told me that "some of the coral in Yaebiji has bleached in the past due to high water temperatures and typhoons." After hearing this, I naturally swam more carefully, trying not to kick the coral with my fins or hit it with my body. I realized that in order to preserve this beauty for future generations, each and every one of us needs good manners and awareness. Not only underwater, but the view of Yaebiji from the surface was also breathtaking. The reef stretching into the distance, the deep blue sky, the white clouds, the clear emerald green sea... A pure world undisturbed by anyone spread out before me, making me feel that "the true beauty of Okinawa lies in these quiet, spectacular views." I felt as if time had stopped, and the desire to stay here forever coexisted, and before I knew it, I was floating, gazing up at the sky, speechless. Another thing that impressed me was the lack of sound. The boat's engine stopped, just before we dived. The only sounds that echoed were the sound of the sea, the sound of the wind, and my own breathing. The moment I found myself in that silence, I realized with my body that I was not in a tourist spot, but in the middle of nature. I took a lot of photos, but the amazing thing about this place is that it's something that can't be conveyed in photos. The gentle water temperature, the sparkling sunlight, the sense of coexistence between the coral and the fish. It only makes sense to experience it with your own eyes and body. That's the kind of place it is. Even if you have no experience snorkeling, you can rest assured because the tour company will properly explain the equipment and teach you how to swim. I enjoyed it enough even with my life jacket on, and at one point I was given a float to hold. It's also great that everyone can experience the wonders of nature, regardless of age or experience. Finally, I thought that Yaebiji is not just a scenic spot, but also a place where you can think about what you are receiving from nature and what you can give back. It felt like something invisible, the fatigue and frustration of everyday life, was being sucked into the sea. By coming face to face with nature, you can reset yourself and feel motivated to do your best again tomorrow. This is a special place that has the power to reach deep into your heart. I recommend you visit on a day when the tides and weather are just right. You'll definitely think, "It's good to be alive."

(Translated by Google) I love Miyakojima so much that I visit it about 10 times a year. My favorite spot is Yabiji. This time, I went diving and snorkeling. The ocean's colors were exceptionally beautiful, and I was amazed by its clarity. Colorful fish swam in the water, and the coral was spectacular. The coral colonies were particularly impressive, and I was reminded once again why Yabiji is so famous. The tides are gentle, making it a spot that even beginners can enjoy safely. No matter how many times I visit, I always discover something new, and I am soothed by the abundance of nature. This is an underwater paradise that I wholeheartedly recommend as a must-visit for anyone visiting Miyakojima. (Translated by Google) The ocean is almost heavenly! 🌊 This is a must-see when visiting Miyakojima. Just a 30-minute boat ride from Ikema Island, you'll find the dreamy ocean you see in photos. Enjoy diving and snorkeling here. You might even encounter turtles. Because it's a boat ride, even on sunny days, the captain may decide not to let you in if the wind is strong or the waves are high. 🥹 On this day, we were able to see sea turtles up close. (Translated by Google) I've always admired Yabiji Sea's reputation as "Japan's largest coral reef system," so I joined this tour with high expectations. However, to be honest, the underwater scenery itself was quite different from what I expected. There were fewer corals than I expected, and the fish were sparse. Even when there were fish, they were mostly small. What particularly bothered me was the color of the coral. I had imagined a vibrantly colorful sight, but in reality, many of them were brown or bleached, which left a somewhat dreary impression. It was a sunny day, and the water didn't seem to be cloudy, though... I can't forget the amazing snorkeling experience I had recently had at Ogami Island, so I couldn't help but compare it, which may have resulted in a harsh review. There, I was awed by the endless carpet of colorful coral and the incredible number of fish. If you're looking for pure underwater excitement and fun snorkeling, I personally recommend Ogami Island by a wide margin. It was a great opportunity to rediscover just how amazing the snorkeling experience on Ogami Island is. The tour service itself wasn't bad, but considering the actual underwater experience, I unfortunately don't think I'll be returning. This is purely my personal opinion, but I hope it will be helpful for those planning to visit.

Scenic spot
Shinbiji, located in the northern part of Irabu Island, is a hidden gem with a mysterious and picturesque setting that's perfect for social media. Accessible by a 15-minute car ride from Irabu Ohashi, this spot features stairs leading to a beautiful sea. The area offers a secluded feel and boasts stunning coral breeding grounds and abundant marine life. However, it can be affected by strong winds and waves, making it less suitable for beginners or snorkeling.
(Translated by Google) If you go down the narrow road towards the sea, you will come to a parking lot at the end where you can park about 5 cars. A little way back from the parking lot there is a narrow paved path, and if you go along that path you will find a staircase that leads to the sea. It was low tide when I went there, so I was able to go down to the beach and take a walk. It is a very beautiful place with coral rocks and a small sandy beach. There's no beach here but it's a really wide area that you can wade in. You'll probably want some shoes; there's critters everywhere and it's mostly volcanic rock and crushed coral. There are little starfish and hermit crabs and regular big crabs all hiding among the rocks and things. The little hermit crabs are super cute

It was a bit over grown but it was worth the visit. The water is beautiful and calm but I’m not sure if it would be good for snorkeling.

There is a path in front of you to the left, but there is a large rock blocking the path. About 100m through the overgrown grass? If you walk, you will come to the coast. This charming museum may be compact, but it attracts over 1,000 visitors on weekends and public holidays! Here, you can explore how this unique saltworks factory extracts mineral-rich sea salt from the ocean—aptly named "Yukishio," which translates to "snow salt" due to its stunning white hue.

The Rakuten staff member (a chubby man) I contacted via tablet was even more arrogant, which made it even more of a pain. There were a few bugs, and given the price, this is definitely not a hotel you should stay at. It felt like the kind of service you'd expect to find at a 1,500-yen hotel. Although the Chinese person spoke politely, the reception was poor and the conversation did not progress at all, and at that point it took about 20 minutes, which was frustrating. Other reviews say that it's normal to have bugs because it's Miyakojima, but I was offended by the fact that there were cockroaches, geckos, etc. walking around inside the room, even if it was outside. I stayed at hotels on the main island and Miyakojima for 5 nights and 6 days, and I used this hotel on the last day, but it was the worst. What's more, it was itchy when I got into the futon. If I ever come to Miyakojima, I will definitely not use it. (If it's 3000 yen per person, consider it) In the end, I decided to sleep in the car at night.
