Cape Hedo, also known as Hedo Point, is a stunning destination located at the northernmost tip of Okinawa Island. This breathtaking spot offers expansive views of both the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea, making it a perfect place for nature lovers and photographers alike. Visitors flock here from late spring to early winter when the weather is typically pleasant, allowing for clear skies and vibrant ocean hues.
Scenic adventure with thrilling views of the most northern point of Okinawa! Even on an overcast day, the views were beautiful. I've never seen such beautiful blue waves crashing before and it was mesmerizing. I'd highly recommend taking a trip to explore this gem.

It was epic visiting here! The top of Okinawa and the rocky cliffs offer an amazing view. You can carefully trot out on the rocks, just watch your step as they are sharp and there is no protection if you happen to fall. There is not much else in this area other than a café that is only open on the weekends. Toilets are accessible though.
Vinny F — Google review
🌊 View: Dramatic cliffs with vast ocean scenery 🌬️ Feature: Strong waves, great for ocean watching 🚫 Caution: No swimming, dangerous waves 📍 Location: Northernmost point of Okinawa Cape Hedo (辺戸岬) marks the northernmost tip of Okinawa and offers one of the island’s most dramatic coastal views. Unlike the sandy beaches found elsewhere, this spot features rugged cliffs facing the vast open sea, giving off a raw and powerful beauty. Because of its geographic position, the waves here are strong and the winds are intense, making it an excellent place to watch the waves crash against the rocks. However, swimming is strictly prohibited due to dangerous sea conditions, so visitors should stay cautious near the edge. Overall, Cape Hedo is an impressive and breathtaking natural spot, perfect for those who want to experience the wilder side of Okinawa’s coastline.
Niel J — Google review
Northern most point of Okinawa main island. Information center had some good exhibits about the history of Okinawa. English translations and staff speak English to talk about the history. Cafe where you can grab a drink and enjoy the view

Made it to the northern tip of Okinawa — Hedo Misaki(Cape Hedo). Breathtaking view where the ocean meets the sky. Definitely worth the drive to see this wild, untouched beauty.

This is he northern most tip of Okinawa. The landscape is beautiful and the wind so strong. The majestic of mother nature.

Cape Hedo (Nippo) is a stunning and peaceful spot at the northernmost tip of Okinawa. It’s quite windy — hold on to your hat — but the views are absolutely worth it. You can see distant islands on a clear day, and the surrounding nature is lush and beautiful. Free parking available.
Théo C — Google review
One of the highlight attractions of my visit to Okinawa. The views here overlooks the coastline and the clear blue waters of the ocean and the waves. The views are best enjoyed on a clear and sunny day. There is also a small observation deck to go to enjoy the sea views as well. If you need a cup of coffee or ice cream, there is also a nearby cafe inside the tourist information centre. It is definitely worth the drive here if you are visiting Nago. Visited in September 2024.

Hiking area
National park
Daisekirinzan, located in the northernmost part of Okinawa Island, is a rocky mountain incorporated into Yambaru National Park. This subtropical forest national park offers well-organized walking trails suitable for all ages and abilities. Visitors can explore the uniquely formed jagged limestones within the forest jungle, as well as huge boulders and unusual rock formations.
Asmui Spiritual Hikes begins with an introductory video while you wait for the shuttle bus to take you to the trail's starting point. Upon arrival, a guide will explain the hiking course. While the primary explanation is in Japanese, a basic English overview is also provided. Wi-Fi is available in the explanation room, and I recommend downloading the Pocket Curator app for a richer hiking experience. This app functions like an audio guide in a museum, offering information about various points of interest along the forest trail. The hike itself is very enjoyable and relatively easy. Immersed in the symphony of rustling leaves and the ever-shifting dance of light and shadow, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in nature. The vantage point offers a good view of Cape Hedo and the coastline. Free beverages are also provided at the rest house after completing the first hiking course. The Ugangajumaru, the largest banyan tree in Asmui and located near the end of the hike, is a truly magnificent sight and should not be missed. Overall, this sacred forest truly evokes serenity and calm. The 2500¥ entrance fee is more than worth it in my opinion. There is also free parking available with plenty of lots. In addition to the hike, Asmui also offers free entry to a small stone museum. For a rejuvenating journey through a sacred forest, complete with breathtaking views, this place is an absolute must-visit!
Elysia O — Google review
Awesome experience. It is a 1.5-hour drive but well worth the effort. The hike itself is more like a stroll but the spiritual guide and attentive staff made the whole experience immersive. Loved it!
Tony C — Google review
Incredible view, which is my favorite place in Okinawa. The geological conditions formed by natural and these natural art is well preserved by government. All tour routes are also well planned for tourists but the tickets are a little bit expensive for people. There is also audio guide for foreigners and know the geographical area from exhibition. After we finished the hiking trail, the staff provided drink and guided us to the entrance. Generally, it is a great place and worthy for staying here for the whole day.
Anonymous — Google review
Asmui spiritual hikes are located just a short drive from Hedo. The entrance fee is ¥2500 per person, which isn't inexpensive, but it grants access to a sacred and well-maintained hiking path. The hike is significantly enhanced by the accompanying audio/reading guide, so if you're not interested in learning about the history and significance of the site, it might not feel like good value. Along the trail, you'll encounter interesting limestone formations, pleasant views of Hedo, and impressively large banyan and cycad trees that are worth seeing. I would recommend this experience if you have the budget and willing to download and utilize the audio guide to fully appreciate the cultural and historical context.
Elson L — Google review
Very well organized. Beautifully maintained trails. You can purchase tickets once you arrive to the visitor center. Bus shuttle takes you to the start point, after a short orientation, you are on your own walking either short or longer trail. We walked slowly and it still took us about 40 minutes to do the "longer " trail, which they marked as 60 minutes. Additionally, you can walk through the Spirit Forest or take a shuttle back. I'd recommend it even if you only have one hour, it's convenient to access from the road to Cape Hedo.
Aida Z — Google review
It's a cinematic spot. It is quite beautiful. The total amount of walk is not a lot. There is an element of spirituality in the area which impacts the psyche positively. We felt good after visiting the place.
Samarth R — Google review
Beautiful trails. Price is high but if you enjoy nature it's worth it.
Ken — Google review
Spent a nice 2 hours here. Just a lovely walk in the nature with lots of cycads, Banyan trees, rocks formations, and a nice view from the top of the walk. You might want to put mosquito repellent as there was a few out there (although not that bad).

Observation Decks & Towers
The Okinawa Rail Observation Deck is a unique observatory located in the Kunigami Forest, resembling the shape of an Okinawa Rail bird. Standing at about 10m tall, it offers a stunning panoramic view of the horizon, with the ocean and sky as its backdrop. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Cape Hedo and the East China Sea from this elevated vantage point.
Very beautiful area. You can get there directly by car, but it's a bit more "adventurous", but doable. Wonderful views and very little going on. We were there during the week in August.
Josipa C — Google review
A somewhat abandoned observatory tower to get fantastic views of the coastline on a clear and sunny day. The tower is shaped as a bird, which adds to the uniqueness of the tower and blends well with the scenery. However, the road leading the tower is very narrow and steep. Do note to drive with caution and look out for oncoming traffic. I would recommend to skip this attraction if there is too much traffic here, as parking is limited as well. Visited in September 2024.
Paul C — Google review
Kind of a novelty. The view from inside the bird isn't as good as the view from the observation deck in front of it. I didn't think the road up was very steep, but the road is very narrow with blind corners, so take it slow and carefully. Try to get a photo of the bird from the bottom of the hill on your way in.
El P — Google review
It's a little overgrown so hard to get any kind of pictures inside of it, but still cute! The road getting to it is a little right. It's cool seeing it from Cape Hedo as well!
Amber G — Google review
Somewhat desolate unmaintained, but you get a good view of Cape Hedo. Narrow roads on the way to the site, with overgrown plants narrowing the road a bit more. The road up seems to only fit one car and there is only parking space for 5 or 6 cars. The site itself seems like it would have appeal to children but there is graffiti and litter (including cigarette boxes) inside the monument.
J A — Google review
On a steep hill is an almost forgotten but curious site. I think the hill is too steep for general tour buses to reach hence there's not so many visitors to this site although the carpark has quite a few lots. We were alone when we dropped by. It's a curious site as it's basically an observatory tower modelled after the Okinawa Rail, a bird that is unique to the island. The observatory is not too well maintained as it was rather dirty inside. The view atop is also not that great, but it's closer to the mountains behind and has a better view of it from here as compared to Hedo Cape.
Rtexal T — Google review
The observation deck is beautiful indeed! The views are spectacular and I much appreciated the isolation of the area, there are not many travelers coming through this area so expect to be alone. My only gripe is the graffiti around the structure and on the inside. Detracts from the homeliness of the area. Other than that, I really appreciated coming here!
Ryan L — Google review
Odd little tourist attraction. Kind of cute. The drive up is on a very narrow road where only 1 car can pass at a time. Few spots where shoulder has been built. Luckily the one time we met a car it was close to the shoulder and we could get by. View back toward Cape Hedo is very beautiful.

Not a must do but worth a drive if there is time to spare. We visited on our way to Cape Hedo. A bit of an uphill climb over a narrow road. Good views of the East China Sea. Plenty of parking. There's even restrooms & vending machines. A historical landmark is there which is the backtracking path.

The staff at the Yambaru Wildlife Conservation Center Ufugi Nature Museum Center was accommodating, despite their limited English language skills. A particular employee demonstrated great enthusiasm in showcasing various aspects of wildlife, including live beetle larvae and other interesting topics. It is noteworthy that Japanese people may not possess strong English proficiency, but this did not hinder the lady's ability to effectively convey her passion for wildlife education, resulting in a fulfilling and educational experience for families.
A great nature center that is free to the public. They had quite a bit of their exhibits in English as well as pamphlets to take home. We enjoyed learning about the native animals in Yambaru National Park. They also had a little library with mostly Japanese books but some English ones on Japanese geography as well as a small kids' play area.
Hannah S — Google review
Cursy museum to learn about the nature of the northern side of the island. Worth a detour as you stop through the north side. The staff are super nice and love to show you around. Plenty of parking and free.
Yuuki A — Google review
If you are in the area, this place is worth stopping by. It's free entrance and has loads of information about the wildlife you are about to experience (if you can spot them) in the Yanbaru forest.
Rtexal T — Google review
The staff here was very helpful. Their English wasn't very good, but the lady that was very enthusiastic about showing my kids, wife, and I live beatle larvae and telling us about several other things. We don't expect Japanese people to know English, but she was still able to communicate her passion for wildlife with us and make it a educational and enjoyable experience for my family.
Paul B — Google review
This is an excellent facility to visit and learn about the wildlife, to be found, on Okinawa. There are displays of many endangered species and, recently, they have added tablets, which translate the Japanese signs to, English. Nature lovers and their families will enjoy a visit to this attraction.

(Translated by Google) Early in the morning, while driving on Prefectural Route 70 in Kunigami Village, I spotted a Okinawa Rail that had probably just been involved in a traffic accident. It was in the middle of the road, so I chased it into a ditch and called the Yanbaru Wildlife Conservation Center (there is a phone number for the conservation center posted on the side of the road, as this is a priority area for roadkill). They came to rescue it in about 40 minutes, and I still have fond memories of them giving me a badge and a magnet about the size of a CD.

Kunigami Forest Park is a stunning camping site with various amenities such as coin-operated showers, toilets with bidets, and cozy cabins and tree houses for accommodation. The park offers easy trails, an observation point, and the opportunity to stargaze under clear night skies. Visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings and encounter wildlife like birds, wild boars, newts, and black warts.
Try to go here during the nighttime to see the stars all out at night. Very fascinating! It is a 3.5km walk/hike from the main road, easily a 10min drive from yuiyui. Worth it to be very close to nature :)

Visited just for a couple of hours. The walks are not tough and we did get lucky to see the Okinawan woodpecker and robin while there. Also had a baby shrew come up to us. Plenty of visitor parking, slightly further down than where Google Maps leads you (main entrance).
J A — Google review
We did a 1 hour trekking In the forest park and was very enjoyable. Every pathway is clearly marked with letters and you can regularly find signpost to remember where you are. Flora and fauna are very rich and there is one observation deck where you cdd add n see the ocean. Nice spot to experince in depth Okinawa’s rich nature and scenery.
Stefano — Google review
I’m reviewing this as a person who went camping in the camping area. Staff was very, very friendly and accommodating when the plans for my stay were abruptly adjusted. Camping areas that are on the platform require a small hike to get to it, but are more secluded camping areas in the open area. I allowed to pick your favorite spot but do not offer much shade. There are bathrooms in multiple locations and places to fill up water throughout the park. There’s a few short trails that are not too challenging and offer some pretty good views. There are showers at one location that are open 24 hours for your use. It’s about a 10 minute walk from some of the further away camp locations. There’s a vending machine that takes only Japanese yen and a couple alcoholic drink options at the shop which closes at five The treehouses looked old and worn, but the cabins looked nice.
Joseph G — Google review
Do book the star gazing tour at the observatory. The guide speaks japanese but they can arrange for an English or Chinese translator if you let them know early. The bungalow is well maintained with an attached bath and toilet. Remember to bring your own towels and toiletries.
S T — Google review
this is slightly above average place for tropical forest walk. one can use the usual forest trees in the tropics. however the warm weather about 30°C in middle Oct does not make the trip pleasant. The entrance to the visitor centre/car park is not obvious. See my photo on the sign on the road that points towards the car park
David — Google review
My family and experienced the Stargazing Tour that took all of our breaths away. When we arrived at Kunigami Forest Park. We were greeted cheerily by Miyagi-san and Shimoji-san. They specially took us on the tour even though it was their rest day as the tour we booked the previous day was cancelled due to poor visibility. During the tour, we were led up to an observatory tower and the entire sky was TWINKLING AND SHIMMERING. We could point out constellations, stars and asterisms. I was amazed that I could see all of them CLEARLY. Then, we were led into a dome with a giant telescope. The dome OPENED and Miyagi-san and Shimoji-san announced that we will be using the telescope to look at planets! What we actually saw was BREATHTAKING that as we took turns to look through the telescope we all GASPED. Saturn was so clear that I could see the zonal winds around it! Then the Moon, I saw actual CRATERS. And even a pair of DOUBLE STARS known as albireo. And then Jupiter too, as a planet some light years away! Truly, I will never forget this night. Miyagi-san and Shimoji-san made the night so special for us. Thank you so much!

It was one beautiful and peaceful forest park open to the public at an affordable price with star-watching towers. The staff is friendly and they have all the stuff that is necessary for camp, barbecue and room modalities. The forest park is located in mountains with pleasant and fresh air. You need to make reservations in advance and they have washrooms and parking space.

Yanbaru National Park is a nature lover's paradise located in the northern part of Okinawa, Japan. It features an ancient subtropical forest that dates back 70 to 90 million years and is designated as a world natural heritage site. The park is positioned between the East China Sea and the Yanbaru Forest, offering pristine white sand beaches at Okuma Beach where visitors can enjoy various marine activities.
You have to do Yanbaru National Park if you're in Okinawa. We were extremely fortunate to see the Okinawan robin, woodpecker and robin, osprey, wild boars and a shrew, all in the one day.

Yanbaru National Park, or やんばる国立公園, unfolds as a pristine haven in the northern reaches of Okinawa, Japan. Distinguished by its lush subtropical forests and diverse ecosystems, the park is a nature lover's paradise. The dense canopy of Yanbaru shelters a myriad of plant and animal species, some of which are endemic to the region. The park's trails weave through captivating landscapes, offering hikers a chance to immerse themselves in the untamed beauty of the subtropical wilderness. Towering trees, vibrant flora, and the melodies of native birds create a symphony of nature that resonates throughout the park. Yanbaru's unique biodiversity, including the endangered Okinawa rail and Yambaru long-armed scarab beetle, showcases the importance of preserving this ecological gem. Visitors can embark on guided tours to gain insights into the delicate balance of this natural haven and the ongoing conservation efforts. For those seeking tranquility, the park's serene rivers and secluded beaches provide a peaceful retreat. However, accessibility may pose a challenge for some, as the park's remote location contributes to its pristine charm. In essence, Yanbaru National Park is a sanctuary where nature unfolds its wonders, making it a must-visit destination for anyone eager to explore the unspoiled beauty of Okinawa's northern landscapes.
Ajleeblog — Google review
Yanbaru National Park was one of the biggest reasons for us to visit the north part of Okinawa island. The park is amazing and we had a great time climbing the mountain area around the Yonaha mountain , the tallest mountain of the Okinawa main island. Little bit disappointing was that the top of the mountain doesn’t have any sign about reaching the absolute top and you can get easily confused whether you already climbed the top or not. Otherwise the place is so much fun and there are many things worth visiting in the National park other than Yonaha, for example famous waterfalls and others.
Kexia ( — Google review
Momoka made this place 5 stars. Although, I would have given it 5 stars anyway. What a wonderful educational resource to have in Okinawa. It is the jewel in the island's crown. Please take the guided tour. It is very informative and the waterfall was the highlight. Look out for the sweet smelling beetle that Momoka catches in her net from the crystal clear waters. (She releases it back to the creek after we have all had a good sniff).
Damiana P — Google review
This National Park covers plenty of territory in the northern part of Okinawa. It's best to go to the website and choose which attractions you'd like to visit. Most, in not all, are accessible by car and have parking areas, restrooms and great views, making it worthwhile for photography. There are some remote locations where a person could get lost, driving the backroads and Google Maps or any internet roadmaps, may not work due to losing cellphone tower access. A favorite of mine, is getting lost on the narrow roads going through mountains (high above major highways) in the north and from Oku to Ogimi. Travelers must be alert and careful not to roadkill any wildlife. One never stays lost for long, without spotting ocean on one or the other side of the island.
Michael L — Google review

Nestled along the picturesque east coast of the Yanbaru region, Road Station Yanbaru Pineapple Hill Aha is a delightful destination for nature enthusiasts. This modern facility features a charming souvenir shop, a cozy café, and an observatory that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. While it may feel somewhat quiet at times, visitors can enjoy unique experiences like swinging on the rooftop or exploring wildlife in designated areas.
Driving to southernmost Okinawa, we stopped by this newly built roadside station. We had Okinawa noodles and pancakes together with Pineapple smoothie and coffee at the cafeteria, which were cooked with superb care. Though the place doesn’t seem to attract lots of customers, facility wise very pretty and neat including the completely new toilets. Among the souvenirs they sell their original pineapple cakes like Taiwanese ones. Not to forget, you should view the panorama outside,

A cute small stop shop. Their food was surprisingly tasty! We regretted not getting more. The mango 🥭 pineapple🍍smoothie was absolutely delicious 🤤. There are quite a few souvenirs to purchase too.

It's not a bad place to stop and they have some unique souvenirs to Yanbaru, but overall it is much too pricey for the food and the merchandise that is sold here. I understand that the surrounding area is desolate and does not have a whole lot, but upcharging the price of your items is not the right thing to do.

An important stop if you are touring around Okinawa, basically the only decent restaurant on the north-eastern side. many souvenirs to choose from too.

I used their facility for study, since I got so tired of crowded starbucks. You can organise any big company meetings or individual study sessions here. Wifi, powerport, board, projector everything is available. Really liked it. For food: it’s a nice place to stop by. Nothing amazing, but simple and good. They got some really good camping options. I’ll try it sometime!

Nestled in a charming village away from the bustling main road, Okinawa Cacao is a hidden gem that offers an unforgettable experience for chocolate lovers. This unique cacao factory not only serves premium beverages, cakes, and snacks but also hosts delightful events like Cacao Night where you can sip on awamori while indulging in rich chocolate treats. The café provides cozy seating both downstairs and upstairs, perfect for enjoying their delicious offerings.
Managed to book in an cacao farm tour and chocolate making experience with Okinawa Cacao. They were very accommodating with the selected date and allowed me to make a change to the date as well. Okinawa Cacao is located in a quiet neighborhood, off the main roadway. We were taken to a private tour of the farm to see the cacao trees and learn about how the trees are kept and grown. We returned to the cafe and were given the necessary ingredients and tools to make a chocolate bar and chocolate milk. Very fun experience and the tour guide made it fun. Highly recommended.

If you love Chocolate this is the place for you Lots of products to choose. You can buy drinks powder nibs anything you imagine from Cocao. They are a small chocolate factory with variety product. Located in suburb. Love here. I miss iced choc there.

I love it. I’m a coffee person so I have never thought that I would like hot chocolate. I like to have a piece of chocolate dessert though. However after I’ve tried a chocolate drink from this lovely shop, I have fallen in love with it. Wow it’s just pure chocolate no sugar at all. It didn’t taste bitter. I recommend you to try it with milk. You will fell like you’re sinking into the chocolate pool . And plus their chocolate cKe is also wonderful too. I ended up buying with cacao nips . You can’t resist these nice treats. There are more other chocolate products that you can choose. All these are directly from cacao farms in Okinawa run by the shop owner. They also run factory beside the cafe. I bet the reason why this chocolate drink is so nice because they are fresh picked up from cacao farm. I strongly recommend to try it. You won’t regret even though you love coffee. 👍

When you walk up to this cafe you can smell the delicious cocoa beans. It is a light filled high ceiling cafe with both upstairs and down. Huge industrial kitchen on the first floor and so many treats to choose from. I got the brown sugar gelato with chocolate bits and dried fruit and it was heavenly. The cinnamon cocoa was delicious and not too sweet. I got the chocolate chip scone which was rather plain compared to the other treats. I decided to also order the strawberry chocolate terrine because I was disappointed with the scone and I’m so glad I did! It was chocolate velvety heaven! Definitely check this place out if you are at Okuma or up north exploring. I highly recommend it!!!

In A Nutshell: -What a discovery finding Okinawa Cacao! -If you enjoy chocolate, come here especially if you are traveling or living on the island. -It's tucked away in a rural neighborhood, but they have a decent sized parking lot. -Being that it's a Monday, I was able to enjoy some solitude without any other customers which adds to the ambiance. -The 2 story building is a tiny factory + cafe. -They have free wifi too. -I ordered their Awamori Mousse paired w/ their 70% cacao which I believe is sourced from Africa. -I feel an intense rush of energy after eating & drinking the delicacies. Overall, this was a really nice place to spend some time while adventuring.

Pleasantly surprised to find this GEM on our drive back to Nago. It is located in a residential area but drive slow and you will be able to find it easily. They have a small menu, mainly desserts and drinks. We had a hot chocolate and pineapple terrine. Both wonderful and rich in flavour. Don’t miss this place if you are around the area!

We Luckily arrived at this great spot. Its off the Main road in this little village that has few highlights to offer We found this little cacao factory, the one of its kind we found so far. The quality of the cacao it premium Offering beverages, cakes and snacks. We ordered 1 cinnamon flavoured cacao from Okinawa warm drink , was absolutely delicious for fair price And we took the dark chocolate cake with pineapple 🍍 for 800 Yen, just divine There is space to sit downstairs Or lots of space to sit upstairs

I don't know if there is a better place to enjoy cacao on earth than Okinawa Cacao. The sweetest staff and the best location in the middle of Okinawa main Island. The house is factory and cacao shop in one and you can choose either coffee or cacao hot or cold. The first choice is the cinnamon cacao which is the classic beverage. I also tried the coffee. The Desert which can be ice cream or cake are super tasty and fruity, one of the best icecreams I ever had for sure. The cacao was soooo thick and full of taste you couldn't even imagine. The owner also gave us a tiny bit of original Okinawa cacao which had a very distinct aroma which I loved! JUST GO HERE PLS

Hentona Beach, nestled in Kunigami Village, is a hidden gem that offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. This beach is primarily frequented by locals, providing an authentic experience away from the usual tourist crowds. With its stunning white sand and inviting waters, it's perfect for swimming—though be mindful as there are no lifeguards on duty. The beach features essential amenities like showers and toilets for visitors' convenience.
Hentona Beach is a beach located in the northern part of Okinawa , near Yambaru hostel where we stayed. The beach was amazing, with even more amazing view during sunset. Great for swimming, apparently for fishing also. The beach is little bit dirty from plastic but that seems to be standard in modern age sadly.

Nestled just a short 10-minute stroll from the serene Okuma Private Beach & Resort, Hedo Co-Op Store stands as the northernmost cooperative store on Okinawa's main island. (Translated by Google) The northernmost joint store on the main island of Okinawa. The harsh appearance is irresistible. It's devastated in a good way. A typical rural restaurant. Even during the day, the store is dark and there are few items. Items that have expired a year ago are still being sold. It's worth a 2 star if you visit for regular shopping, but it's worth a 5 star if you think of it as an experience to learn about life in Okinawa. It is located on a side street in a village off the national highway, and is out of sight unless you go out of your way to visit, so visitors from outside the village rarely come. When I visited, I got a strange look as soon as I entered the store. I don't think this is malicious, but an honest reaction to an unexpected customer. It is said that it is extremely rare for outsiders to come to the small village of Hedo. As soon as the storekeeper realized that the unknown visitor was safe, she suddenly became calmer. I guess he was happy after he felt relieved. If you are interested in a communal store, please do your own research, but to give you a brief explanation, it is a mutual aid store jointly set up by all local residents as investors so that people can buy supplies in areas where there is no place to shop, such as in a depopulated village. It is a shop with a meaning. Profits are returned to expenses and investments within the village. Normally, money only circulates within the village, but when customers from other places visit, valuable income outside the village is generated. Although its primary purpose is to buy and sell products, it was once an important place for lending money to residents. For this reason, it still serves as a social hub, and many residents seem to come here just to have a conversation, even if they have no business to do. I was sorry for surprising her, so I just went shopping and went home, but I later regretted it because I thought she probably wanted to chat. If we had had a little conversation, both of us would have ended up feeling better. Even though I only spent about 300 yen, she said "Thank you!" over and over again. If you are visiting me from now on, please try to say a word or two if you have a chance. You may be able to get something more important than the product. Hijio Falls is a beautiful site with a simple trek through the forest along a nature trail that culminates in a stunning waterfall. The pathway is easily walkable, but there are many stairs to climb, so be prepared for some physical activity. The destination is breathtaking and has an aromatic jungle-like scent that can be quite relaxing. However, it's best to bring bug spray during summer or fall seasons as the area may have insects present.
Great short hike to a beautiful waterfall. We went at the end of August and we were hot but not unbearably so. The water was so clear. It was tempting to jump into the water throughout the hike! There is an area designated to play in the creek not too far from the entrance, so if you want to get wet, that’s the spot to do it. I surprisingly had NO bug bites. Mosquitos usually flock to me but there weren’t any! Path was well-maintained. There was never any question of which direction to go. Definitely recommend doing this hike if you are in the area!

Remarkable and yet magical location. Still went on the adventure even though the park was closed down. A lot of the trail is eroded away. Still recommend. About 1.5 miles from the parking lot to the waterfall, about 45 minutes regular hiking pace.

Nice hike of 4.2km go and back. Beautiful walk along a river leading to waterfalls in the middle of the forest. Expect some going up and down and quite a few steps. Good for families. Pets not allowed. Entrance fee to pay by cash only. ⚠️ Attention this is not the access by car, for the right location look for Hiji Falls Gate. There are 3 parkings.

Hijio Falls is a great little hike that is well maintained and beginner friendly. It is a steep hike up some stairs at some points but overall it’s not too long and probably took us around 40min there and back while also stopping for pictures. The trail is absolutely beautiful with the amount of nature around it.

Amazing waterfall!! Very enclosed in nature, at the start of the trail there’s spots for BBQ’s and relaxing too, amazing for a day in nature, the entrance is only 500yen (adults)! Hike there was great, saw a couple cool birds and animals around, (nothing aggressive or anything). The waterfall itself is completely mesmerizing and water is freezing!! Right now people can’t swim in it no more, because other past tourists left trash and did dangerous stunts, please do not leave trash or injure yourself!!! Keep the beauty of this place clean and untouched!!

UPDATE: ROAD WAY AND PATHS MAY BE CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING/LANDSLIDES If you are going to go just be mindful that this hike or campground area may be closed. There are plenty of short hikes or nice long one up in the National Yanbaru Park. I wanted to let everyone know as we had driven there and saw a sign that said closed since 2024 I felt bad when I watched other tourists approach in a taxi they paid for and had to be driven elsewhere. You can still park just before the campground if you need a spot of quiet area near the river. Unsure if overnight parking is allowed for vehicle camping.

A nice trek through nature. Pathways are easily walkable, but be sure to work on the old glutes beforehand. Why? Well there are a heck of a lot of stairs. Made the whole trek with a 2 year old on my back and the eye of the tiger uh… in my head. 4 year old made it all the way. The end spot is gorgeous, smells like you think a jungle should (in a good way) and rather meditative. If you go in summer or fall bring your bug spray.

It’s 300 Yen per person to park and you get to experience one of the best beaches in Okinawa. The place is ran by an older gentlemen who keeps the camp ground and cleans the beach. The coral formations are beautiful. There is a natural barrier that prevents large waves and strong currents making this the ideal location for beginners. At low tide I stopped snorkeling as I found myself swimming between coral formations rather than over them. We went twice and each time we were the only ones on the beach. We will be back!

Didnt stay in the cabin, but bring 300 yen per person for parking! This beach had amazing surfing. The reef is perfectly formed for easy surfing, and the drive up north is totally worth it. Love this place.

Lovely beach, great for snorkeling. Some beautiful fish, and warm comfortable water temperature. The waves can be quite big and wild, there were a lot of surfers when I went. I camped 2 nights. Payment was ¥1400 per night. ¥100 more than a solo camper last year according to these reviews? There weren’t any other overnight campers and I got a wooden platform with a roof. There are cold water showers and clean toilets. You need to boil the water from the tap for drinking and cooking, you can use the owner’s electric kettle to boil water if his door is open and he is available to show you where it is. It’s really remote with no shops or restaurants nearby so bring in your own food. There’s no public transit, the nearest bus is to Oku. The owner’s drunk friend should leave solo female travelers alone.... aside from that, everything was fine.

Great and quiet place for snorkelling, you can park and shower, the guy will charge you 300 yen per person.
Ann L — Google review
Great place to snorkel even on days when the waves get rough. 200 yen per person gets you parking and use of the showers. The money goes to the old man who keeps the beach clean all by himself. You will see some trash that had washed up on shore but it won't take away from your experience. Would definitely go again
Gibeon T — Google review
A beautiful beach. The coral reef is close to the shore so the water goes deep pretty fast. It's a good site to do some swimming, snorkeling and surfing. Parking is 300 yen per person but it provides you the bathing so it's worthy. There are rocks and holes called by the local 'husband and wife stones'.

Mount Yonaha is a forested peak with ridges and valleys often covered in fog. The trail to the top takes around three hours and offers beautiful views of greenery along the way. Despite some muddy areas due to recent rainfall, the hike boasts unique plant life and sightings of various birds. At the summit, there are several trails leading to unexplored areas, but unfortunately no clear view from the top itself.
Went here yesterday with my bf and the trail was amazing. It took three hours to get to the mountain entrance but well worth it. There was a lot of mud around due to the previous weeks rain but there were a lot of plants that we never saw before. We also saw a lot of birds but was unable to capture them on camera. The sun was beautiful and finally at the top of Mt Yonaha we saw the triangle point and several trails leading to the unknown. We were a little disappointed because there was no view at the top but overall the trail was fun. We will be coming back to this one because we will be going off track to explore other areas and bring back some more spectacular pictures. Stay in tuned.

(Translated by Google) I climbed it on 13/7/2025. I decided to climb it after learning that it is the highest mountain on the main island of Okinawa, but I will probably never climb it again and I would not recommend it to others. The reason is that the path is difficult to understand, there are some routes that are a little dangerous for beginners, and there is almost no view from the summit. The path is difficult to understand because there are multiple forks in the road to the summit, and there is not enough guidance for them, so even if you try to use your current location, the hiking trail does not appear on Google Maps. There are some places along the way where the signal is poor, but I recommend using Apple Maps. You can see the hiking trail on Apple Maps, so there is no particular concern. There are several places with rugged rocks on the way to the summit, so you need to be careful not to get upset when it is raining. Also, you cannot expect a view from the summit, and there is only one place on the way to the summit where you can see the entire Yamahara forest, but other than that, you just walk through the forest.

Low tide here is amazing. Going at night or during the day. Both options are great. You can mot go wrong with walking around exploring. Swimming here can be great but the currents are strong so you have to be weary. Hiking along the beach to the others are amazing so give it a shot. Take your time and plan a whole day. Please make sure you bring water and food. There is a mom and pop shop near by. There is a public restroom at the village. But at the beach its you can nature so be ready if you need to go.

(Translated by Google) King Yoshimoto was the third king of Tenno, the first king of Okinawa, and ascended the throne in 1249 AD. However, when he ascended the throne, great famines, natural disasters, and epidemics occurred, and the king believed that this was due to his own unethical conduct, and summoned King Yeongjo, the founder of the next royal line, to manage the country on his behalf. The darkness has subsided. It is said that Lord Yoshimoto abdicated the throne to King Yeongjo after 11 years on the throne, and what happened after that is not known. There is also a theory that he fled because a mob angry at the disorder in the country tried to have the king burnt at the stake, but it is not known how power was actually transferred. The building utilizes the stonemasonry techniques of Ryukyu construction and has a unique house-shaped exterior that is thought to have been influenced by Buddhist architecture, and was designated as a national cultural property (building) in 1983. A large coffin is enshrined in the center of the interior, and this is thought to be a large ceramic coffin measuring five feet long that was sent from the Sho family during the renovation of the coffin in the Meiji period. -From the information board- (Original)

(Translated by Google) 2023.10.26 This historic site is located in the Hedo district, where Cape Hedo is located, and is believed to be a royal tomb. You can reach it by walking a short distance along the mountain path leading from the stone steps along the road. I thought it was a tomb carved out of a cliff, but it was built on a slightly flat area in the mountains. It is said to belong to King Yoshimoto, the third generation king and the grandson of King Shun, who is said to be the son of Minamoto no Tametomo. This legend is a bit vague, and it is hard to believe that Minamoto no Tametomo, who was killed on Izu Oshima, ended up in the Ryukyus, and that the tomb of King Yoshimoto was passed down in various places, making it hard to believe that this was a royal tomb. Even in the form of a tomb, the site is surrounded by an outer wall and there is a stone chamber made of stones in the center. The stone is also processed, making it hard to believe it was made in the 1200s. So who does it belong to? It's a mystery. Located in the Yanbaru Forest, The Yanbaru Forest Toy Museum is a unique spot featuring toys made of different types of woods. Despite its small size, it offers an interesting variety of wooden toys that captivate both children and adults alike. Visitors can enjoy playing with the toys and marvel at the creativity behind crafting them from seemingly rigid wood. The museum provides a fun and interactive experience for kids, making it a great stop for families visiting the area.
💖This place is WONDERFUL!! All children of all ages will enjoy it. My kids did not want to leave, even after 2 hours of playing. The wooden toys are beautifully made, incredibly fun, and actually quite pleasant to the ears! It is so nice to enjoy time together without electronics (exception for pictures I just had to capture). The 2 ladies & gentleman who greeted us were the sweetest! They took time to show how each toy should be used, with patience and joy. I’m very grateful! Our family looks forward to visiting this treasured establishment again, very soon!!

Didn't think much of it. But this toy meuseum is not to be missed. Entertains kids of all ages (even adults). Toys which were mesmerising and toys which were fun. Staff there made the experience so much better. They introduced the different toys and kept the place tidy all the time. 100% recommended. P.S. They have branches all around Japan too!

I’m 50 years old and i can’t help but smile in this place. Brought our two girls here and it seemed a bit underwhelming at first. A room with wooden toys but it’s a montessori wet dream. Interactive toys and puzzles made of wood. Board games and challenges. A big wooden egg pit. Wooden kitchen with food. The place is soooo clean. Shoes off and upper shelves where they clean and dry the wooden toys. Bathrooms are spotless. I’ll admit I was caught playing a bunch and the staff were all friendly, smiling and engaging. They were regularly bringing different toys over to kids to introduce them. Really simple but there is something about touching and playing with wooden toys. Our kids didn’t want to leave.

We have been to this toy museum twice now and had so much fun both times, children and adults alike. The staff is so great at showing all the toys and keeping everyone engaged. They are building on to the museum and it will be 4x the size and due to be finished in January I believe. I can’t recommend this museum enough!

This was an amazing experience and surprise. We came up there to do the forest walk and found this gem at the entrance. They have all different kinds of toys and this gs to play around with made out of wood, primarily the local dominant wood: matsu. Lovely staff take good care of visitors and explain everything. Apparently, this museum, which it really isn't, is a UNESCO world heritage site?! So cool!
V T — Google review
A unique spot, with all the toys made of different types of woods. Engineered in different styles it's quite interesting to discover what type of toys can be created out of the seemingly rigid and static wood. It's a small spot but kids love the place and well worth a stop if you are in the area.
Rtexal T — Google review
You have to go here if you’re in Okinawa. My husband and I went not really knowing what to expect. This place could be a Ghibli film. Hidden in a forest in the mountains this tiny museum is absolutely magical. Everyone there was so friendly and despite two barriers, one being language and the other being my husband and I being 1) awkward and 2) in our 30s and not accompanied by children, we were made to feel so welcomed. I don’t know how they did it but they brought out a childlike joy I’ve not experienced in years. Yes, the real draw is not just the beautiful toys but the magical people who work there. I hope the curators see this - I love you all and you’re amazing. Love from the girl with the soot sprite bag and the man with the blue hair.

We visited back in April during our Trip to Okinawa and The Yanbaru Forest Toy Museum was a great little stop on our Trip. We had intended to visit the national park, but found things closed and it had been raining so took a detour into the Museum, it wasn't on our list but we are so glad we went! The main room isn't very big but full of a variety of toys which you get to experience and play with, and the staff definitely go above and beyond to show you how to play things (we were a group of 4 adults without children and really enjoyed spending an hour or two here) it was a really wholesome experience which transcended the language barrier and truly felt like one of those "I'm in Japan" moments that we will always remember.
