Teatro Massimo Bellini is a grand 19th-century theater adorned with intricate gold detailing, showcasing major operas and concerts. Dedicated to the renowned opera composer Vincenzo Bellini, this opulent Baroque venue offers public tours and hosts a diverse array of events throughout the year, including ballet, classical music, theater, and opera. Notably, it presents unique outdoor summer performances in Piazza Vincenzo Bellini against the backdrop of a beautiful square and fountain.
Super friendly staff all round who are willing to chat and get to know you a bit so they can give you good recommendations around town. The place its self is beautiful and gives any opera house in London a run for its money, in fact I believe it outdoes all of them as this place is so understated and the small entrance way gives birth to an even greater spectacle. So much history here I highly recommend going on the tour which can be in English or Italian or both Thanks

Fantastic baroque theatre that maintains its 19th century charm. In places it it dated but the 4 stories of loggias are spectacular. The acoustics are fantastic. If you have a chance, also visit the upstairs room that is spectucularly decorated with gold colored plaster ceilings, ornaments and pillars!

Fantastic symphony experience. Recommend getting tickets at the box office rather than online, better options. Beautiful and well maintained historic theater. Orchestra was fabulous and powerful with complex Mahler 5th. No breaks just like Mahler would expect.
JimmyBikes F — Google review
Teatro Massimo Bellini is one of Catania’s most distinguished cultural treasures, a theatre that radiates elegance, history, and artistic passion. Named after the renowned composer Vincenzo Bellini, the opera house stands as a proud tribute to the city’s musical heritage. Its grand façade, richly decorated with ornate details and classical influences, immediately sets the tone for the experience inside. Upon entering, visitors are met with an atmosphere of opulence. The interior showcases plush red seating, intricate gold accents, and a lavish ceiling fresco that adds both drama and beauty to the auditorium. The design creates a sense of intimacy despite the theatre’s size, ensuring that every performance feels both personal and immersive. The acoustics are exceptional, offering clear, resonant sound that enhances the impact of operas, concerts, and orchestral events. Beyond its visual and acoustic qualities, Teatro Massimo Bellini stands out for its cultural vibrancy. The programming often features a thoughtful blend of traditional opera, classical music, and contemporary performances, appealing to both enthusiasts and newcomers. Attending a show here feels like stepping into a world where artistry and tradition blend seamlessly. The area surrounding the theatre also adds to the experience. Situated in a charming square, the theatre is framed by cafés and restaurants, making it easy to enjoy a relaxed evening before or after a performance. Whether you come for the architecture, the atmosphere, or the music itself, Teatro Massimo Bellini offers a memorable and enriching cultural experience. It remains an essential stop for anyone wishing to appreciate the artistic soul of Catania.

Theatre Bellini is an amazing building! This classical building has been built to mark the Catania born composer Vincenzo Bellini. We couldn't see the inside sadly as there weren't any performances while we were visiting Catania in Sicily.

Ursino Castle, a 13th-century fortress in Sicily, was built by Emperor Frederick II and remains remarkably well-preserved. The castle features all four original towers and walls, along with remnants of surrounding walls within its grounds. Visitors can explore the castle's interior to see the impressive Museo Civico, which houses royal archaeological collections, objects from a monastery, and painted carts.
It was built in the 1st half of the 13th century, intended to be used as a defensive bulwark - mainly from sea attacks. Today it is filled with bits and pieces of amazing history, art masterpieces, an area you can see restorative work on paintings. It is divided into four parts: archaeological, medieval, Renaissance, and modern, with the Benedictine and Biscari Museum collections front and center. I believe this is a must see when you visit Catania. There is a partial view of Mount Etna from the top of the castle walls. On the day we were there, they were getting ready for a concert that evening, so it looks like they host special events as well. Could have spent more time here - was wonderful.

Castello Ursino is a fascinating medieval fortress in Catania, Sicily, built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II. Surrounded by lava stone and rich in history, it now houses a museum with captivating art and archaeological exhibits. The mix of Norman architecture and volcanic surroundings makes it truly unique. A peaceful, historic spot that offers insight into Sicily’s complex past—definitely worth a visit when exploring Catania.
Dani B — Google review
Ursino Castle offers a rewarding blend of historical architecture and curated artifacts—ideal for those who appreciate medieval history and Sicilian culture. It’s especially suited to visitors seeking depth in a less crowded museum, but those expecting curated, modern exhibitions may find its layout and presentation modest
Chintan S — Google review
Great place to visit just before sunset, the colors work well with the site
Audrey V — Google review
Still closed, but even so the surrounding area and the outside are worth visiting. It’s almost all on volcanic rock and there are lizards, birds and wild cats all around the area. It’s a popular meeting point for tours and the area felt very safe.
Caïna V — Google review
Decent enough museum but the €6 entrance is honestly too steep. That said I enjoyed the meander around and the collection of artifacts on the ground floor. The second (first floor in the U.K.) is mostly paintings. It’s no Louvre but some are striking, such as Love and Death and the Sicilian Vespers. All captions are translated into English. Nice views of the city from the roof terrace. Have to agree that unfortunately bathrooms were gross 😷
Jennifer S — Google review
We visited Caravaggio paintings exposition and ticket lady proposed purchase also tickets to Ursino Castle for just 1 Euro more, so it was a no brainer. I think it's worth seeing and as you can see at the photos you will be able to see a lot of paintings, the whole interior of the castle and beautiful views from the top.
Dominik W — Google review
6€ per person to get in. Sort of boring to be honest, paintings and sculptures but I really wanted to see and learn about the castle. The outside and the middle part is the best. Only two vending machines on the top floor with a small seating area. Bathrooms were disgusting!

Monastero dei Benedettini di San Nicolò l'Arena is a historic monastery located in the center of Catania, Italy. It is one of the largest monasteries in Europe and now houses the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Catania. Visitors can explore this architectural gem and learn about the life of Benedictine monks through guided tours. The monastery's grandeur and historical significance make it a must-see attraction when visiting Catania.
We did a self-guided tour through the Monastery as at the time we have arrived here (4:30pm) there was seemingly no ticket counter or a tour guide, so we just walked in. You can easily spend hours in this magnificent place just getting lost in the various hidden corners, gardens and intricate corridors and halls. The Monastery is used nowadays by the University of Catania hence you can see a lot of students, with many of the rooms converted to lecture halls. Some of them, including the library, are really impressive. Everyone here seems to be used to tourist visits so no is looking at you strangely. Towering above the Monastery is the impressive dome of the adjacent Saint Nicolas church, so don't forget to visit it as well. Overall, this was an interesting and insightful experience despite not benefitting from a detailed guided tour.

The Benedictine Monastery in Catania is a very special and well maintained piece of history in Catania. I took a group of Americans from my yoga retreat here as part of a cultural excursion to Catania and it was absolutely fabulous. The tour was about an hour long and covered so much history and interesting parts of the property to explore. Our english speaking guide was so passionate and enthusiastic about the history he was sharing with us. He invited questions from the group through out our experience and he was a fountain of information and knowledge. I would recommend this tour to history buffs and skeptics alike.
Sharon M — Google review
We really enjoyed our guided visit to the Monastero dei Benedettini (10€). It was fascinating to walk through 2000 years of history, and it’s truly remarkable that such a historic place is now home to a university. It’s one of the most beautiful university campuses I’ve ever seen !
A G — Google review
We accidentally stumbled across the monastery whilst sightseeing in Catania and managed to join a guided tour. The monastery blew us away and the guide was amazing. Being able to see the evolution of the site from its Roman beginnings in the basement library to the various rebuilding of the earthquakes and eruptions of Etna was fascinating. Of all the churches and sites in Catania, I’d put this on the top of the list.
Anthony N — Google review
A tour guide is definitely necessary here. Our tour guide Nicola was so funny and informative. You got all kinds of funny stories and history about this place from 2nd century AD to current time. We even got into the usually not open area thanks to our guide. (Also this museum shop has the best designed souvenirs I have seen so far in Sicily)
L C — Google review
One of the largest monastery in Europe, full of interesting historical sites and ancient ruins; make sure to visit along with a guide; there is 1 every hour and the whole tour takes around 1:20 hours and it’s really worth it.
Salim M — Google review
You can't judge a book by its cover nor can you judge this magnificent monastery but the outside. Once inside of this church that is for the monks of the order it is unbelievably beautiful. I highly recommend visiting it if you come to Catania.

Visitors can expect to engage in friendly conversations with regulars while exploring the market under colorful umbrellas.
Great market; more than just seafood. Would love to bring some home. All the feel of a fish market with the yelling, the fresh seafood smell and friendly service. Plenty of places to try the food as well. Not as big as Seoul, but worth a visit if in Catania.

S special place to visit in Catania. You don't have the possibility to see it everyday. An open place where the fishermen sell their fish. A very original one. And you don't pay anything and can taste grilled fish or seafood for little money.
Liburnid Z — Google review
The fish market in Catania is amazing! You can feel the local energy and see how fresh the fish are — straight from the sea. It’s a true Sicilian experience!
Goran Š — Google review
Wonderful place to wander around, listen to the chatter of people talking everything 'fish.' This is quite a sight - everything is so fresh, the men cutting and unloading and selling from the square. I loved the 'culture' of it and thinking about the history of fishing and selling, this wonderful way of life in Catania. Would love to go back again.
Theresa J — Google review
Bustling food market with tons of fresh fish, vegetables, meats, and local specialties. Get ready for shouts, crowds, and strong smells—but it’s an awesome experience and really gives you a taste of local life.

It's a great place to take a leisurely stroll and soak up the city's ambiance.
This is the center of Catania and the highly recommended visiting it. Not only will we find a lot of shops, restaurants and cafes, you can spend time people watching and see not just tourists but mostly locals living their life. Not a bad life at all. The Roman Amphitheater of Catania, located in Sicily, Italy, dates back to around 300 BCE and is a significant relic from the Roman Imperial period. Situated at the base of Montevergine hill, it is now partially submerged below ground level near Piazza Stesicoro. Despite being only a small section of its former grandeur, it remains an important part of Catania's ancient history.
After living and coming to Catania for 25 years, this was the first time I saw it open and was able to explore the thing. Very stunning and interesting inside, especially the darker hallway and the side room. Absolutely worth seeing if you're in Catania.
C J — Google review
Really beautifully preserved, and quite spectacular. Interesting to see neighbourhood cats have made their home among the ruins. Not for the faint hearted if you're afraid of heights!
Samantha R — Google review
You can just look into it from the outside without ticket, but that is less than 1% of this place. The ticket is 4 EUR but worths it apparently. You can explore the whole amphitheater underground. It is merged with some modern buildings, showing off very unique view from inside. The best thing is that people rarely buy the ticket. So you can enjoy your time without noise and crowd. The place is not cleaned well, though, which was the only bad thing to me. There were many wastes seemed thrown from the open above. I spared some time gathering the wastes for easier cleaning of staffs' :) Actually, this place gave me the best experience in Catania. I wish you have a chance to explore it fully with a ticket.
김동석 — Google review
Really cool spot in the middle of, and under, the town. Well worth the entry fee. It goes on for quite a ways beyond what you can see from the street. Most of the buildings in the immediate area are built on top. There are restrooms about midway through but wow…pretty rough. Might wanna find one before you go in.
Brandon-Dean M — Google review
The ruins you can see from the surface are 10% of the whole structure. The visit is worth for the price (4€), and the panels help you understand how the amphitheater was in the past, but you'll enjoy it more with some previous information.
Tagaloc — Google review
It doesn't look like much from above, but when you go in (which costs only about €4) you get to walk through some of the preserved superstructure of this Roman amphitheatre, which is now underground. It's worth a visit if you have 30 mins to spare.
Tom B — Google review
Very well presented ruins, very easy to get to and see and photograph for free from street level. You can buy a ticket to walk through the ruins, but this part is not handicapped friendly.

Palazzo Biscari is a grand Baroque palace in Catania, adorned with lavish frescos, mirrors, and stucco work. Today, it serves as a venue for concerts. The palace holds historical significance as it was the place where the artist Greco discovered the wonders of ancient Greco-Roman civilization through its windows during his early years in Catania. Nearby attractions include the Ursino Castle, which houses the Civic Museum of Catania displaying various collections and works by renowned artists.
You can choose between visiting on your own (EUR 7) or a guided tour (EUR 10). I recommend to attend the guided tour (Italian and English available). No waiting times.
Thorsten M — Google review
Ok but once fully renovated and the paintings have been cleaned it will be a better place to visit. Guides available if wanted and price concession for over 65's. Signs of decay on ceilings and paintings discoloured from smoke from the two fireplaces in the main hall. This hides a lot of the fine details in most of the paintings. A visit takes about 30 minutes.
I R — Google review
A must visit Palazo Biscari. One of my favourite places in sicily. We had the fortune that one of the family owners explained us the palace. Was magical
Juan — Google review
Beautiful location for a wedding. I was absolutely mesmerised by the decor, the beauty of the surroundings and the level of care and precision in delivering events. Just an absolutely breathtaking venue
Sharmin F — Google review
The Palazzo Biscari, an 18th-century Baroque palace in Catania, is an architectural gem worth visiting. Its opulent interiors transport you to another era. However, the visit can be marred by a few drawbacks: * Limitations: The number of rooms open to the public is limited, and the entrance fee might be considered steep. * Lack of information: Information about opening hours, prices, and historical details is scarce, especially if you're visiting independently. * Unforeseen closures: You might encounter unexpected closures, as happened in this case. Despite these inconveniences, the palace remains one of Catania's main attractions and a prime example of Sicilian Baroque. If you have the time and budget, I recommend including it in your itinerary. Tips: * Book in advance: Avoid unpleasant surprises. * Hire a guided tour: Learn more about the palace's history. * Check the official website: Although it might not always be up-to-date, it's a good starting point. In summary, the Palazzo Biscari is a beautiful place, but there are some areas that could be improved. If you appreciate Baroque architecture and history, you will enjoy your visit.
Luis V — Google review

Mercedes T — Google review
This place, for history lovers. It makes you feel like you've gone back two centuries, it makes you want to dance in its beautiful halls that resemble the ballrooms we see in manhwa and novels. It's a very idyllic and romantic place where you feel like you're shaking hands with Romeo or Juliet. It's one of the best places to visit

The 3rd-century BC Ancient Greek theatre offers stunning views of the coast and hosts performances that bring its history to life. Meanwhile, the Teatro Romano di Catania showcases how the city has evolved over time, with modern buildings towering over an excavated Roman theater from the 300s BCE.
Protip: If you are in a group, have a single person buy all the tickets as the card reader transactions were exceptionally slow. A must-see for Catania visitors, unless you don't have the ability to climb stairs. This is just a few blocks from the center of town and has the archeological history going back to 600 BC with many layers of construction. The space is mostly without shade so an early morning or very late afternoon visit in dry weather is probably the best. Don't miss the Odean theater at the top level. Cats were lounging in the shade when we visited.

Very cool place to come and see. Loads of cats just wondering around. Compared to other places in Catania, this museum is quite expensive especially as parts were closed when I went. However it is still well worth a visit. Be sure to check the route map first which is weirdly by the exit. I saw plenty of tourists missing parts as there is no clear route.

Hidden in the middle of an old section of the city this piece of history is surprising and amazing. It is worth visiting to really feel the scale of the history of this space.
Adrian C — Google review
I visited the place late and there wasn't much daylight (November after 5pm), but on the other hand it turned out that the visit was free at that time. This place has a very interesting and unique vibe. In some ways it's different from other similar places I've visited.

I really enjoyed exploring the Roman amphitheater and Greek Odeon. The site dates back to the 1st century AD. There was plenty of signage giving the history of the location and information about the restoration efforts. The theater was in remarkably good shape and I was able to explore the various tunnels and interior passageways. There were so many various nooks and crannies to explore and nothing was off-limits. The adjacent Odeon is smaller and didn’t hold up as well, but it was still amazing to see. This site is not overly crowded, so it almost feels like you have the whole place to yourself. I’d highly recommend a visit to this historical gem.
Frenite — Google review
Worth a visit only cost us €4 each as we are under 25, the staff weren't very friendly at the front but its a very nice ruins with plenty to explore if you read and search through the whole place.

8 euro to enter. Cool theatre. Because of the buildup you almost walk right past it.
John M — Google review
It’s impressive to walk in the center of a modern city in Italy and suddenly to realize that there is an Ancient Greek theatre surrounded by inhabited buildings! The presence of Ancient Greek civilization in Sicily is very obvious and it’s worth to make a road trip on the island to discover it! 8€ / person entry fee.

The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant'Agata is a prominent baroque cathedral located in the lively main square of Catania. Designed by Giovanni Vaccarini, its columned facade and domed roof dominate the Piazza del Duomo. The cathedral houses the tomb of composer Vincenzo Bellini and features original Norman apses and a fresco depicting Catania's submission to Mount Etna's eruption.
It is a mesmerising baroque masterpiece renowned for its imposing facade and serene interior, offering visitors a profound sense of tranquility and peace. Its architectural grandeur, a testament to the city's resilience after the 1693 earthquake, combines elements of Romanesque and Baroque styles, creating an atmosphere conducive to contemplation. The cathedral's spiritual ambiance is further enhanced by its rich history and the devotion it inspires in both locals and visitors. ⛪️ 🙏🇮🇹🥰

Austere baroque building. Its facade is the most exuberant part of the building. The grave of Bellini is an impressive site and obviously still loved by the locals given the flowers. The music line on the grave talks of the fire dying with his passing. The remnants of the Norman Basilica give an idea of the prior building’s grandeur, it is a great pity it did not survive (given also how beautiful other Norman buildings are) Well worth a short visit!

The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant’Agata is an extraordinary place of worship and a must-see for anyone passionate about culture, religion, and art. Rich in history, it stands as one of Catania’s most iconic landmarks. The cathedral is truly spectacular – both in its impressive exterior architecture and in the beauty and detail of its interior. A visit here leaves you with a deep sense of awe and appreciation for Sicily’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Andrei V — Google review
We visited this Cathedral early in the day, then came back that evening for a classical music event. This is a very special place with a deeply spiritual vibe. The marble work is exquisite and not overly ornate. This is a lovely, lovely place.

The Kathedrale Sant’Agata (Catania Cathedral) is a magnificent piece of architecture that anchors the Piazza del Duomo. The building itself is historically rich and absolutely beautiful, showcasing the striking Baroque style typical of the city. The surrounding garden area is also well-kept and provides a lovely, peaceful contrast to the busy piazza. Top Tip for Photographers: If you want to capture truly amazing pictures of the Cathedral and the piazza, I highly recommend visiting right before or during sunset. The light hitting the facade at that time is spectacular and creates unforgettable views. This is not just a place of worship, but a true architectural and photographic landmark in Catania.
Halide E — Google review
The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant’Agata in Catania is one of the most captivating landmarks in Sicily, offering a powerful blend of history, spirituality, and architectural beauty. Located at the heart of the city’s main square, the cathedral immediately draws attention with its grand Baroque façade, a striking contrast against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Etna. The exterior is richly ornamented yet harmonious, showcasing elegant stonework that reflects both the resilience and the artistic heritage of the region. Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by a spacious and luminous interior. The soaring columns, intricate chapels, and ornate altars create an atmosphere of reverence and serenity. One of the most memorable aspects is the cathedral’s connection to Saint Agatha, the patron saint of Catania. Her presence is deeply woven into the basilica’s identity, and the relics displayed within lend a powerful sense of tradition and devotion. The cathedral also offers a unique insight into the city’s turbulent past. It has been rebuilt multiple times due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, and this layered history adds emotional depth to the experience. The blend of Norman, Baroque, and later architectural influences makes wandering through the basilica both visually engaging and historically enriching. Outside, the bustling square provides a lively contrast, making the cathedral a perfect starting point for exploring Catania’s cultural and urban life. Whether you are drawn by faith, history, or architecture, the Basilica Cattedrale di Sant’Agata is a must-see destination that leaves a lasting impression.

If you're wandering through Catania and eager to delve into the island's rich history, a visit to the Museo Storico dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943 is an absolute must. Nestled within the Le Ciminiere complex, this captivating museum offers an immersive experience that brings to life the pivotal events of World War II, particularly focusing on Operation Husky—the Allied invasion of Sicily on July 10, 1943.
One of my favorite museums experiences. All the exhibits are well thought out and the large interactive exhibits are very engaging. It’s located in an area with other museums and there is a parking lot with a meter. For only 4 EURO this is a can’t miss experience in Catania.

Incredible Museum that goes very in depth on the Allied Invasion of Sicily during World War Two. Everything about this museum is first class. Authentic uniforms and weapons to interact displays that very detailed. I cannot recommend this place enough. A fantastic way to spend your afternoon in Catania
Dan L — Google review
What a great place to visit. It's a hidden gem. Well worth the price and it's bigger than it looks. I was taken back my the wax works inside as of all the Museums I have visited about WWII, I have never seen anything like them before. They are outstanding. Simply well worth going to.
Wayne F — Google review
A truly impressive and moving experience. The Museo Storico dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943 does a phenomenal job bringing the events during the summer of 1943 to life. The recreated village and bomb shelter set the tone immediately—putting us right in the middle of the Allied bombing of Sicily. We especially appreciated the machine gun bunker simulation, which added depth to the many real bunkers we’ve seen around the island. The museum skillfully blends original equipment from the battle with mockups and immersive displays, helping us understand not just what was used, but how it felt to be there. Every exhibit was thoughtfully curated and captivating. We spent about an hour, but easily could have stayed longer. A must-visit for anyone interested in WWII history or just looking for a powerful and educational experience in Catania.

The Fountain of the Elephant in Catania is a significant landmark featuring a Roman statue of an elephant carved from basalt, serving as the symbol of the city. Situated at the heart of Piazza Duomo, it is surrounded by notable attractions such as Catania Cathedral and Via dei Cruciferi's Baroque buildings. The area offers a blend of historic architecture and picturesque views, creating a captivating atmosphere for visitors.
What a lively place! It is busy with performers, parties, and people walking around even into the early morning hours. There are lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. It is lovely in the morning too when it's quiet. Our hotel was a few blocks away so every night we were in the Duomo area having dinner and people watching after a long day being tourists and exploring the surrounding areas.

Wonderful sight in the city square. I never knew about the elephant and what it symbolizes in Catania. Great shops here, plentey of restaurants, churches, loved seeing all the Christmas markets during December - they were everywhere here! See the elephant if you're in Catania, he's beautiful!

A wonderful place set in historic surroundings. The atmosphere is both charming and authentic, giving you a real sense of the city’s heritage. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy the beauty of the architecture and the stories hidden in its walls. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history and culture

The Fontana dell’Elefante, affectionately known as “u Liotru,” is one of the most charming and iconic symbols of Catania. Located in the bustling Piazza Duomo, this unusual monument immediately captures attention with its whimsical design and deep cultural significance. At its center stands the famous black lava stone elephant, a figure that has become inseparable from the city’s identity. Its expressive, almost playful appearance contrasts beautifully with the elegant Baroque elements that surround it. The fountain’s composition is both unexpected and captivating. The elephant supports an Egyptian-style obelisk, creating a striking visual combination that feels at once historic, mystical, and delightfully quirky. This unlikely pairing sparks curiosity and invites visitors to explore its legends, many of which reflect Catania’s complex past and the clever imagination of its people. The location of the fountain enhances its appeal. As the focal point of the square, it offers a perfect vantage point to take in the cathedral, surrounding palaces, and the lively urban atmosphere. Whether visited in the golden morning light or during the vibrant evening hours, the monument feels alive, continuously engaging locals and travelers alike. Beyond its artistic qualities, the Fontana dell’Elefante serves as a beloved cultural emblem. It represents resilience, humor, and the unique spirit that defines Catania. Spending time near the fountain provides not only a visual treat but also a glimpse into the soul of the city. For anyone exploring Catania, “u Liotru” is an essential stop—memorable, distinctive, and deeply connected to the character of the place.

Majestic piazza, gorgeous art, with a beautiful bar where you can sit and enjoy a drink while admiring it all. We bisisted when there was a bit of construction, but the place was beautiful nonetheless. all around there are olaces to visit and eat/drink. the prices are very good. highly recommend it
Mali L — Google review
Visiting the Fontana dell’Elefante (u’ Liotru) was an interesting experience. The monument itself is quite cool and unique, and it definitely stands out as one of Catania’s more memorable landmarks. However, it was hard to fully appreciate it because the surroundings overshadowed its charm. Unfortunately, much of Catania felt dirty and neglected. People seemed to smoke even more than in mainland Italy, and there was trash and litter scattered throughout the city. Many buildings were coated in black volcanic ash—or something that looked like it—which gave the area a grimy, gloomy feel. Overall, while the Fontana dell’Elefante is worth seeing, the general atmosphere of the city made the visit feel more depressing than enjoyable. It’s a fascinating landmark in a setting that doesn’t quite do it justice.

The Fontana dell’Amenano is a stunning Baroque fountain located near Piazza del Duomo in Catania. It represents the city's connection to the Amenano River and features a design with water flowing over white marble, creating a picturesque effect known as 'acqua a linzolu'. The fountain is made of Carrara marble and depicts the mythical figure of Amenano holding a cornucopia from which water emerges.

The Orto Botanico di Catania, also known as the Botanical Gardens of Catania, is a lush sanctuary located within the city. Managed by the University of Catania, this botanical garden serves as a living exhibition of plant diversity from various regions across the globe. Visitors can explore different recreated habitats, ranging from tropical rainforests to Mediterranean landscapes, each carefully designed to support an array of plant species.
I visited the gardens today and it was a respite from the heat and noise just beyond the gates. As I walked around I didn’t see any benches to sit on but another reviewer mentioned a bench; I must have missed it. It was so lush that it cooled to whole area. I went in to the conservatory and some of the plants were suffering a little bit from the heat. I liked their hummingbird installation at the end of the main path neat all of the stairs with columns. Also, there are very nice restrooms around to the right of this main building past the fountain. I love that they keep this part of the city clean and maintained nicely. It is a lovely showplace.

It's a very beautiful place, we saw a lot of beautiful plants and flowers here. I especially liked the cactus part, there were huge cacti and some were even in bloom. We spent about 3 hours here before we went around. There were no crowds, there were barely a few people during the day on a weekday.
Ramóna V — Google review
Lovely gardens to stop by and explore, not as well maintained as they could be but in the Sicilia heat that is difficult. Best place to hear and see birds in the city too. Fantastic collection of Cactus and plants from all over the world. FREE to enter with a free map at the entrance. Closes 13:00-15:00
REBECCA G — Google review
this was a wonderful surprise in Catania. not the biggest botanical garden I've ever seen, but it's free, all plants have tags with the Latin name so you can easily get more info on them online if you're curious, there's a greenhouse and it doesn't seem to be overcrowded.
Militon S — Google review
Just a few blocks up the hill from the CBD, this cozy and small botanical garden was perfect for a morning stroll. It was free and the monitor inside the gate confirmed this, so more than worth the money. The grounds were not carefully manicured for our late summer visit, so crunching through the leaves on the gravel paths added a soundscape to the view. Cats were at every turn and a few of them were friendly enough for a quick petting session. The greenhouse had a more humid version of the climate and the cactus on the backside of the main columned building felt like another warmer and dryer climate. An art display with 3d printed hummingbirds called on us each to do our part (super individualistic perspective and discounts the value of institutions...but the sociologists in your party might not be as triggered as ours were).

I’m so embarrassed that we fell for this scam and got food without checking the reviews or prices. Food is precooked, we got charged 37 euro for a plate of octopus and some cold fried seafood. I was so shocked by the price that I just paid but it was a really terrible introduction to the city and it took a while to stop feeling like the whole place is a giant scam. Prices are just made up on the spot. It goes against all the usual Italian hospitality and these guys should be ashamed of themselves. Avoid at all costs!

Avoid. Got served raw fish, had to ask to put it back on the grill after which it was still undercooked. They don’t even know how to use the grill it seems, and serving raw fish is actually dangerous. Some other plates I got were just cold. It’s super expensive as well, paid €22 for three small plates. Best visit some other, sit-in places in the market for seafood.

Definitely out to scam tourists, so be careful if u’re not local or Italian speaking. they serve small plates of seafood without prices, our meal came to €60 for just 5 small plates of small sized seafood. they initially said €70 and when we clarified, they calculated again and said €60 instead. Scirocco Sicilian Fish Lab is a simple restaurant located in the iconic Catania fish market, offering Sicilian-style fried fish and seafood served in traditional paper cones. The dishes are prepared fresh daily, using fish sourced from the nearby Piscaria market stalls. The restaurant's founder, Marco Timpanaro, aimed to revive the tradition of Sicilian street food and bring attention to Catania's fish market as part of the city's heritage.
We stop for lunch and were not disappointed. As every nice place is now full of tourists but how can I complain when I'm one. The quality of the food is excellent. The fried fish is tasty, fresh and a reasonable quantity. The arancinetti were a real treat, strongly recommend them. And the swordfish caponata was refreshing and brought memories of the Mediterranean. Price is adequate and staff was very kind despite the horde of tourist.

This small fish fast-food spot is right in the city center, on a street near the main square where during the day there’s a fish market. The smell of fish is noticeable, but you can get used to it. The place had many positive reviews and always seemed busy, so I decided to try a fish’n’chips style cone. The staff was very friendly. The first time I went, I was told they didn’t serve fries, but I could get the fried cone on its own, which was fine. My order arrived within a minute or two, and it came with a plate, napkins, and lemon wedges. The fish was fresh, the batter crisp, and the quality of the seafood was excellent. Even as someone who normally doesn’t enjoy fish and seafood, I liked everything I tried. It was so good, that a few days later I went back. The cone was just as good as the first visit, served the same way. This time there were more small octopus pieces, which slightly dominated the mix compared to shrimp or calamari and other fish, but it was still very tasty. Overall the food is fresh, high quality, and consistently well prepared. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to try some seafood in a casual, fast-food style setting.

We saw a travel blog recommending this place. Had a lunch meal on our first day and it was great. The boneless seafood cone was awesome and the arancini were great. We were so impressed we went back for dinner on our last night. Easy ordering and they call your name out (loudly) with your order when its ready. Great quality food and worth the visit.

The food is pretty much perfect. They have a variety and they have as much as you need for a quick fish meal. A big con however is its location, Catania is kinda known for being dirty and smelly but this location was so bad. It smells really really bad, I was there at summer. Overall though it’s nice, it is kinda self service, you order to the counter and lay and they bring it to you. Nothing special, but the food is delicious!! (Sorry for the messy videos, they are from Live Photos and I need my points lol)
Nassia K — Google review
I tried octopus salad, sword fish/aubergine salad and boneless cone. If ı have chance to come again ı will the choose same three, no hesitation a perfect seafood place! I also got the couscous salad but I am not a big fan of it.
Safa S — Google review
Had boneless cone, lemon mayo, bread and beer. Cold beer & fried food in the heat never goes wrong. The seafood was well cooked - soft inside and crispy outside. Light & thin fry. Well seasoned that I felt that I did not need anything else (not even lemon). I would not recommend the bread though. The lemon mayo also had a lot of mint - which I enjoyed, but it was unpleasant surprise for my husband who does not like mint. Could be better if they clearly stated in the menu that there were mint also. We sat outdoors. Some fishy smell from the fish market nearby, but got used to it quickly that it did not bother much.

Pretty cool way to try Catania’s seafood. I tried the boneless cone while my friend went for the fish cakes. Mine was decent, slightly salty and not too remarkable, but the fish cakes stood out, with flavors that were unique and nicely balanced. The staff were friendly too

Good spot for lunch and snacks. Somewhat of a wait around lunchtime - maybe 15-20 minutes on a Saturday. While you wait in line, a table becomes available. Service is friendly and quick. Had the fennel/orange-salad and the fried cod fingers - both were great and delicious!

Palazzo degli Elefanti is a 1690s palace in Catania, currently serving as the town hall. It is situated in Piazza del Duomo, alongside other notable landmarks such as Palazzo dei Chierici and several beautiful churches. Located in a busy area near the shopping street in Catania. The place is nice, old but gold. It is nice to take a walk around the place.
Wadad L — Google review
Palazzo degli Elefanti is a pretty cool landmark, and it’s definitely worth a quick visit. Unfortunately, the experience was overshadowed by the overall condition of Catania. Much of the city felt dirty and neglected. People seemed to smoke even more than in mainland Italy, and there was trash and litter scattered throughout the streets. Many buildings were coated in black volcanic ash—or something that looked like it—which gave the whole area a grimy, gloomy atmosphere. Overall, while the Fontana dell’Elefante and Palazzo degli Elefanti are interesting sights, the general environment of the city made the visit feel more depressing than enjoyable. They’re fascinating landmarks, but they sit in a setting that doesn’t quite do them justice.

Lido Azzurro is a well-established and luxurious beach destination in Catania, offering sun loungers, cabanas, a swimming pool, and a bar/restaurant. It is known as one of the most exclusive beach clubs in the area, providing a tranquil escape from the bustling Sicilian beaches. The resort boasts the largest stretch of beach in Catania and offers amenities for both adults and children.
Great lido on a beautiful sandy beach. Good value with showers changing rooms restaurant and cafe. Music in the morning and afternoon with activities for the children. Very nice staff and not overly busy. Good relaxing and comfortable day at the beach.
Helen S — Google review
I recently visited this beach club and paid €17 for a sunbed and umbrella. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. Firstly, for a private beach club, I was surprised to find a lack of rules regarding noise. Customers were blasting music from their portable speakers and watching Reels and TikToks at maximum volume. This cacophony was further exacerbated by the club's own music. The result was a complete lack of peace and relaxation. In today's world, where consideration for others is often lacking, it is crucial for establishments like this to enforce rules. The staff should ensure that these rules are respected so everyone can enjoy their time. Simple measures, such as putting up signs and requiring the use of headphones, would greatly improve the experience. Moreover, the water was not clear and was quite dirty, it also had a lot of algae. While I understand that this is not all the club's fault, it did detract from the overall enjoyment of the visit. In summary, without some changes to the current environment, I find it difficult to recommend this beach club for a relaxing day out.

A little run down, 20€ pP for the lounge chairs in the back, restrooms and changing rooms available and in OKish condition. Sandy Beach with a lot of sea weed but clean water with the port nearby, not cristal clear!

My phone showed me memories from our vacation in August, and we were shocked to realize we hadn’t left a review about this wonderful place. It’s truly perfect for relaxation: there are different zones, not too many people, and a very clean beach. We took sunbeds in the first row — the view was amazing, with Mount Etna clearly visible. We also tried drinks at the bar — everything was great. The takeaway food was tasty as well. The location is convenient, and the infrastructure is well thought out, with changing rooms and everything needed for a comfortable stay. A place we would definitely love to come back to!
Anastasiia S — Google review
Felt really safe (as depicted in the photo). Beach was clean. Contrary to the reviews, the place was really quiet, apart from the beach lounge area which has party vibes. Or, maybe because it’s already off season. Unfortunately, the changing rooms are SO far away.

Who in gods name had the idea to let concerts be held here? If tourist in all the hotels nearby or normal resident in Catania, you will never get sleep every 2 days, because theres something loud as a concert happening here. Im sorry for everyone who lives nearby or fell into this trap. Dont even try to change anything: authorities (like police) wont help you and they will keep organizing events there. Insane how you dont even have to warn people from outside of this area if they stay here for even more than one night.

As one of Europe's largest monasteries, it offers visitors a glimpse into its storied past that spans from ancient times to modernity. Pasticceria Savia is a historic patisserie that has been serving delectable sweet treats, pastries, and savory snacks since 1897. Located on the lively Via Etnea street, it offers an intimate dining experience with terrace seating. The highlight of their menu is the colossal arancini - deep-fried rice fritters filled with tender ragu, cheese, or butter.
The granita is fabulous and they do a mignon brioche which is so cute. Pistachio and fragola granita were outstanding and came with proper panna. The pistachio cornettos are not to my taste overly large and well stuffed but with a pistachio custard, they just are not remotely tasty and not worth it particularly if sitting down and paying the excess. All the cakes were delicious. Average cannoli. Very good arancini also. The staff are lovely particularly the men at the bar and a clean bathroom is kept. Recommmeded.
Dee — Google review
Go early in the morning for the freshly hand-made cannoli. I usually have to take them outside to eat, because the wait for a empty table can be long in the busy season. If you have the time eat them at a table with a nice expresso. The green filled cannoli's are my favorites, I always miss that great taste when I do find one in a Paris bakery.
Device 2 — Google review
I LOVED this cafe. Yes, it was very busy and hard to find a table…. But that’s for good reason. They have great pastries at great prices. I didn’t try their savory, but I’m sure it is also very good. I got their cannoli and a large rum baba filled with pastry cream. Both fantastic! The cannoli had a lighter shell than most I had, which didn’t really make it better or worse in my mind. Just different. The rum baba- oh wow. So delicious! Super moist and flavorful. It’s huge for the price too.

If you want to experience the real Sicily — where tradition, flavor, and soul come together — Savia in Catania is the place to go. From the moment you step inside, the aroma of freshly fried arancini fills the air — golden, crisp on the outside, and perfectly creamy within. These aren’t just snacks; they’re a piece of Sicilian history, made just as they should be. Every bite reminds you that you’re tasting the original, authentic flavor that locals have loved for generations. And it doesn’t stop there. For something sweet, pair a soft, buttery brioche with the rich, velvety granita — the perfect Sicilian breakfast duo. Add a strong espresso, and you’ll understand why this region’s culinary traditions are so revered. At Savia, every flavor feels like it’s feeding your soul. It’s not just food — it’s heritage, passion, and love served on a plate. Whether you come for the arancino or stay for the dessert, this is a stop no true food lover should miss in Catania.

This place was recommended to us. Busy with locals, it’s a great place to grab an arancini or cannoli. Get yourself in line to pay first, then wait for your ticket number to be called.
An — Google review
Loved the granita (chocolate and pistachio) and the brioche buns here, super soft with a lovely hint of citrus. We ended up coming back twice just for the granita and brioche! The arancini catanese was good, though the pistachio one was a bit bland despite being freshly made. The wait for a table can take a bit, but the waiters were kind.
Sunny N — Google review
It was recommended to me by my hotel. It was a very good selection of tasty Sicilian food like Arancini, Croissant, sweets, coffee, any many more. I really liked the Cafe al Ginsing, Spinach Arancini, and Pistachio Croissant. Just one drawback is that as this is very popular place, there is sometimes a waiting queue where people sometimes need to stand for say 20mins in peak hours, but it is worth it. Waiters service is good and they speak English. Card payments are accepted.

We arrived just before the kitchen opened, said okay, and ordered drinks while we waited. The patio was empty, and we only managed to get to the second table. While serving drinks, the waiter said he'd soon bring us the menus we'd been waiting for. Meanwhile, other tables began to fill up. We waited and waited for the menus. People who arrived after us were already taking their orders, and we finished our drinks and went to find a place where someone would be willing to serve us. It's a shame, the atmosphere is nice, and the reviews are good, which unfortunately I don't have the opportunity to share.
Patryk B — Google review
We went there for dinner and to try out some wines. We loved the atmosphere, it was very cozy and loved the old wooden tables ect. The prices are very fair and the food was truly delicious. (My best pomodoro carpaccio I had in Sicily on this trip for instance!) Good that they have tapas portions, so you can taste more. The waiters were friendly and easy going, but the service was a bit too slow at one point (waiting almost one hour for a dessert) and forgot a few things we ordered. But we would still return, just maybe on a less busy time period.

An atmospheric interior but most people prefer to sit at the outdoor tables and people watch. Tables can be hard to come by. Staff are fantastic. My server had great suggestions for a couple of glasses of wine and even remembered me and what I had ordered when I returned. He found additional treasures so that I was learning new wines. Food looked great although I didn't eat myself. My friend ordered the Beetroot Gratin and pronounced it delicious. They even brought us some complimentary hummus when it was clear that we planned to stay for a while.

We enjoyed visiting this place a couple of times during our stay in Catania..The host made us feel very welcome and was knowledgeable about local wine and let us try a couple of different ones to see which we preferred. The wine was great. The food we had was very tasty. We did notice that at times you had to wait a while for drinks to arrive so maybe don't go if you are in a rush ..We enjoyed sitting outside under the trees watching the world go by. A really lovely relaxed atmosphere. Would recommend.

Pasta alla norma, arrabiata, and the mixed platter were all very delicious. Definitely an old school home-cooked style of restaurant with very attentive and friendly staff! Oh. And the homemade Tiramisù... the best I've had on this trip so far! Molto bene!

While I really appreciated the warmth and hospitality of the host—an old lady who I believe is the cook at 1962 Restaurant—I found the food to be just average. The flavors didn’t quite meet my expectations, though I should note that I’m not Italian and may not fully appreciate the nuances of the cuisine. That said, I truly valued the honest approach of the restaurant in clearly stating that there are limited options for meat and seafood. It reassures me that the food served is extremely fresh, which is a big plus. Overall, a cozy and genuine place, but the taste didn’t quite hit the mark for me personally.
Rupika — Google review
Our experience was quite nice in this restaurant, on the contrary some of the comments here which almost made us not to visit here. We ordered Caserecci Zucca and Norma & 2 glasses of wine / red wine and a mix salad on the side, all were quite nice and good portion wise. Waiter wanted cash payment which is fine and acceptable. I highly recommend.

I visited in 2024 and 2017. The restaurant was better in the past. The quality and selection are good. But the prices have increased too much, and the service and atmosphere are not great. The freshness is also questionable. It was also rude to instruct us to go to an ATM to pay cash; when the card machine is working fine.
Gereon N — Google review
We had wonderful dinner here yesterday with pasta alla norma and one with artichoke. Both were very nice, i'd say that alla norma had a bit more interesting palette but it was expected. We also ordered a horse steak that was quite thin and veal rolls 'alla Rosanna', both delicious even though i'd prefer a bit less vinegar on my steak. House wine was light and easy and made a good company to the food. Unfortunately we didnt have any more space for desserts in our bellies, otherwise I'd definitely try their tiramisu. Waiting time for our order was around 15 minutes, very reasonable for home made pasta. But we were quite early for dinner as per Italian standards, the restaurant kept getting fuller by the time we finished our course around 9pm. I feel a lot of bad reviews here come from wrong expectations. It is a family run traditional Sicilian trattoria with food cooked by your Italian Mamma. It is cozy, warm and attentive. It is NOT an instagram like serving or a michelin star experience with a €100 price pp. you come here for authenticity and soul and experience of local life. Overall we had a very nice experience here and will definitely recommend this place to my friends

Sorry to say that the pasta alla norma here was disappointing here compared to other preparations in Catania. The style of the dish was cool, but the larger pieces of eggplant weren't our preference and the sauce and cheese didn't stand out. The wait time is long but I don't fault them too much as it's one nonna cooking to my knowledge.

Well worth a visit. Climb to the roof for amazing views of the historic center. The construction of this church begun in 1687 but the facade was never finished. The church is free to visit and the fee to climb to the roof is €3.

There's a spiral staircase takes you up and down from the roof and you can do a full circle of the roof giving a 360 degree view of the city. Once you've come down, you can explore the church which is massive compared to other chruches in the city. Highly recommended!

Beautiful church on centre of Catania near to Duomo and Pizza Universitas. There was a beautiful wedding when I was there.

The Basilica della Collegiata in Catania is a truly beautiful church, with a rich history and exquisite architecture. While there are certainly many stunning churches to be found throughout Italy, this particular basilica is a hidden gem that should not be missed. One unique feature of this basilica is that it also doubles as a wedding hall on occasion. While this may cause some inconvenience for visitors during weekends when a wedding is taking place, it is also a testament to the beauty and versatility of the church. Despite its smaller size, the basilica is grand in style, with intricate details that are sure to impress. Visitors can expect to be wowed by everything from the impressive altar to the stunning stained glass windows. Overall, the Basilica della Collegiata in Catania is a must-visit for anyone interested in religious architecture and history. While its dual use as a wedding hall may be a minor inconvenience for some, it only adds to the charm and character of this beautiful church.

This city is disgusting, trash and graffiti everywhere. People are driving like lunatics. Stay away if you like your mental health and property (thefts), go see beautiful Taurmina or Siracusa - much more tourist friendly.
Krzysiek C — Google review
It's free but aside from that nothing remarkable. Worth 10-15 minuites if you happen to be wondering past but not somewhere I'd go out of your way to see. There's all the standard features you'd expect in an Italian basilica but with very minimal frescoes it had little to capture the imagination.

BarnAut is a vintage bar with a cozy atmosphere and oak dining room tables that spill out onto the street. It's a great spot to enjoy drinks and watch the local scene, especially during Carnevale when it turns into a giant street party. Located near Castello Ursino, it offers decent beer choices, extensive cocktails, and spirits at affordable prices. The vibe is unique with old-school musical devices playing in the background.
Good music, beautiful spot, friendly people and super atmosphere. Love the way the bar is designed and arranged with all the vintage things inside making it unique

Wonderful local bar right in the historic area, but on a side street with little traffic, mostly locals. Outdoor tables. An excellent jazz pianist was playing, that really made the atmosphere. Quirky decorated and fun bar. Super nice bartender, on my request, recommended a delicious liquour. I had a great time!

This is the kind of place where you could sit all day, with a good book and a delicious Negroni Sbagliato (best I drank in Sicily). It is located at the end of a cut de sac, on one of the prettiest streets in Catania. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Such a gem!

Such an amazing hidden gem! The prices of the cocktails are truly unbeatable and the fact that you can get an aperol spritz for as cheap as 4 euro is unheard of. Their cocktails are super delicious and well priced for what you get. The service was quick and super lovely, definitely visit this place!! It’s a must

Very nice bar, it was about 7min walk from our apartment. The waiter recommended me a tangerine liqueur, and it was 12 out of 10 points. Mostly locals, noisy and busy, there was a DJ party but you can talk and enjoy it ✌🏻 The street is busy and you see the youngsters walking back and forth preparing for a night.

Public beach
Spiaggia di Catania is a public beach conveniently located near the city center, making it easily accessible by taxi, bus, or even on foot. Despite some negative reviews during off-peak seasons, the beach is worth visiting year-round. It offers a long stretch of sand with calm waters and a stunning view of Mount Etna. While parts of the beach closer to the city may have cleanliness issues, moving further away provides a better experience.
Excelente beach. Service at the beach is great - ordering cold drinks... We had lunch here - a lot of options and prices 15 eur. As well there is entertainment team - kods were having fun. Definitely worth of visit
Mima L — Google review
This beach could have so much potential. Though it has so much waste. Looks like a wasteland, not a beach. Sharp things including broken glass hidden in the sand. A lot of sellers trying to sell you various stuff.
Aurimas T — Google review
Dirtiest beach I have ever seen in my life. It made me sick to my stomach and I didn't even enter the water as there was trash floating and shattered glass in the sand everywhere. People on the beach were lying among garbage. The only people I noticed that were taking their own garbage from the beach were not Italians but Polish and Germans. I add a video I made.
Free Y — Google review
Absolute mess! Never seen so many trash at the beach. Seriously for the first time of my life I was worried not to step on a glass or syringe. Recommend to spend time at the beach by beach bar, where sand is clean and riddled. Water full of oils.
Raviq11 — Google review
I was at the beach at the beginning of October. Only the road to the beach was dirty, the beach itself was perfectly cleaned. The sand is super soft and fine, the sea is shallow far inland and the water is also clean. There is a bar where they sell all kinds of drinks. Overall, I am very satisfied considering that the beach is free, if you wish, you can rent an umbrella for 6 euros and a sunbed for 7 euros from the bar.
Dimitar D — Google review
The beach is dirty and poorly maintained. Everything looks old and neglected, definitely not a pleasant place to relax.
Masha T — Google review
The beach and the surrounding area have so much potential. There’s a wide sandy beach, a beautiful shoreline, well-organized bike paths, and plenty of greenery and blooming trees. But the amount of trash is horrifying. I’ve never seen a beach like this. It’s truly heartbreaking, there’s a lot of litter on the beach, and even more along the way to it. The grass near the sidewalks is covered with garbage, and it doesn’t seem like it’s being cleaned. The parking lot also looks like a dumpster. I really wish this place is better maintained and that people are more responsible. I’m giving it two stars instead of one, the nature is still beautiful, and I really wish things were better here.

Embark on an unforgettable journey with the Etna Wine Tour, where you can explore the enchanting vineyards nestled on the slopes of Europe's most active volcano. This unique experience showcases the renowned Etna DOC wines, crafted from indigenous grape varieties like Nerello Mascalese and Carricante. As you traverse this stunning landscape, you'll have the opportunity to visit two exceptional wineries and discover charming villages such as Castiglione di Sicilia or Randazzo.
Our family of 6 booked this tour last minute and the whole team was amazing. From accommodating our specific winery request to fast responses, the team was amazing. The tour itself with Roberto was amazing, we had all discussed he was the best guide we have had all trip! He provided us interesting insights, kept us engaged, but let us explore on our own at the same time. We would highly recommend, and suggest asking for Roberto when booking!!

Etna Wine Tours provided an excellent wine tasting experience for my husband and me. We booked our tour just a week before our trip to Sicily but Alessandra made the whole process very easy. Grazie Etna Wine Tours We had a fabulous day visiting a family winery and learning about the production process over some antipasto and then moving on to Firriato for a fantastic lunch and more great wines. Our guide, Massimo, was so wonderful - very happy to chat and explain to us the history of the region and the story of Mount Etna. A wonderful day spent with great food and wine 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Although we had a great day on our tour, I don't think we got value for money. We booked a full-day small-winery tour through Etna Wine Tour. Prior to the trip, email communication was thorough and detailed, which I appreciated. Our guide, Alessandra, picked us up on time in a clean and comfortable car. We went to three wineries, each with fantastic, knowledgable hosts and great wines. They were truly wonderful places to visit. However, Alessandra was not a great guide. Her English was limited (she professed to this when we met her) and she did not talk to us during the day. We got no information from her about Etna, Sicily or wine in general. She also seemed to get lost on the way to the first winery. For the high price point (€350 per person), this was very disappointing. I hope in future there is better communication during the day or a significant reduction in price. In short, the wines were delicious but the overall experience was mediocre and not worth it.

We did two tours - Mt. Etna and Savoca, where The Godfather was filmed and, a wine tour of Pietradulce & Irina Badala the next day. Both tours were terrific. Roberto was our guide for the first tour. He was knowledgeable and informative and seemed to enjoy showing us the sites. We recommend him and the tour. Max was our guide for the wineries tour. He had a great sense of humor. The people, wines, and food offered at both places were exceptional. Both tours were awesome and well worth the price. Also, pickups and drop offs were on time.

I booked the private Etna by cable car and Wine tour. I was a little nervous because I found so few reviews of this company online, but everything exceeded expectations. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, prompt, and spoke perfect English. He had lots to tell us about Etna and was able to answer all of our questions. I liked that the vineyard he brought us to was small and not crowded, where the staff was attentive. The food provided was delicious and the wines were very interesting. A full day of fun.

It is the main square of Catania and is also home to the landmark of the city: the Fontana dell'Elefante. As I walked the square and admired the beautiful buildings and the Basilica, I was amused by a group of old fellows (you can find them in one of the photos below) who had parked themselves on the stairs of the Fontana, assuring that they would be in every photo taken that morning 😉 If you choose, you may walk through the beautiful Basilica. Another interesting possibility? For three Euro, one can tour the Roman baths which have been excavated underneath the church. One surprising thing about my visit here was discovering the fabulous fruit stands on a surrounding street - bellisima!

It's said that you can see the mount Etna as well (not while we were there, but maybe on a clearer day), but nontheless the roofs of Catania, especially the churches, were amazing. Staff is polite, but as with all the rest of Sicily, no one speaks English. The visit would've been much more helpful if we had any English material to explain to us what we were looking at
Kristina J — Google review
Pretty boring museum, at least when pretty much nothing is in English. The underground spa/bathhouse was pretty cool though (and it is a separate attraction on its own..) No air conditioning so prepare to sweat your skin off if you are visiting on a hot summer day.
Niko M — Google review
Interesting little museum, the most interesting thing (IMHO) is that the ticket gives you access to the Achilles Terms next to the Cathedral. (Enter inside the Cathedral grills and on the wall at the right of the Cathedral, before entering into it, you will find the entrance of the Achilles Terms). Nevertheless, this museum exposes some interesting artifacts that worth a visit.

Villa Bellini, also known as Giardino Bellini, is the largest and oldest public green space in Catania. This serene garden area within a city park offers shaded paths, benches, fountains, and flowerbeds. Adorned with busts of Catanese musicians, writers, and politicians, it provides a peaceful escape from the Sicilian summer heat or a relaxing break from exploring the streets of Catania.
Beautiful area to relax with lot of greenery and an amazing view of Etna. I’m sure people have taken great pictures of Etna from here. When I went, it was a Saturday and very lively. A man was singing Christmas music and people were relaxing and enjoying. The villa is quite large and I think I only explored portion of it. There is famous bakery and street vendors near by to it as well!

Fantastic view of Mount Etna from the top of the steps. Well kept gardens with interesting busts of famous Sicillians in history. Venue for outdoor theatre, we got to hear the sound checks and a cheeky free listen to some opera. A couple of playgrounds if you have children in tow. No where to buy food or drink, so bring something with you if you plan to chill in the shade
REBECCA G — Google review
great park for some rest on a hot day! shame there aren’t more water fountains though. near a lidl which is always a plus in my eyes. lots of nice shaded spots to relax and read a book and there is a water fountain on one side of the park you just have to really hustle to find it
Antonia P — Google review
A nice place in the center of Catania. I wonder that many men statues are presented there, but barely no women. Pretty weird. But in general I liked it there.

Very beautiful and calm park! Highly recommended for short rest during the town exploring! It is possible to get espresso coffee or cold beer. Kids friendly and the detail with current date from plants is very nice.

Really good park, nice cold water fountain to fill up those water bottles on those hot summer days!
Pia B — Google review
Beautiful and relaxing, it's a shame that the oldest tree there has graffiti on it. Looked like the gardens needed a bit more attention from the gardeners but apart from that it's a really nice place to visit.

This charming gallery tells the story of cinema and its contributions to the world in Catania during the early 20th century with film posters, clips from films, and equipment on display.
Amazing experience! I recommend it to everybody who is visiting Catania. The way they curated the space is genius! I had so much fun inside. Entry is only 4 euros but they have invested so much effort, it is definitely worth it!!!
Kristina — Google review
Highly recommended but don’t come here expecting a literal history of cinema, Italian cinema, or even movie making: yea they do have historic projectors but really it’s more of an immersive highly creative sound and visual experience, no, more of an homage to movies. Just go and thank me later.
Kevin B — Google review
Quirky little museum dedicated to film. The museum is located in an old warehouse complex. It has a bit about the history of cinema and different rooms to explore that inspired by various films. Last admission is at 3.30pm but it actually closes at 5pm. €4 per person.
Joanna A — Google review

Great place for movie fans. Not a traditional museum I suppose, but good fun. There's an English audio guide you can download to your phone. Only 4 euros entry, just go.

One of the must-see sites for lovers of cinema nostalgia. In addition to reviewing the development of cinema, there is a collection of old film projectors and cameras, Italian and international film posters, and amazing reconstructions of sets that appear as rooms from the 1930s to the 1970s, in which scenes from films that used the room's theme are projected: kitchen, bar, window to the street, study, living room, bedroom, bathroom, and more. It gives the visitor a special atmosphere that I have not seen in any similar museum. Highly recommended

The Chiesa di San Giuliano is a beautiful and interesting catholic church in Catania, Sicily. It features an elegant convex facade and, above the portal, a broken pediment graced by two allegorical sculptures. The church is free to visit for adults, and children enjoy free access as well.
Well hidden in a small side-road quite a bit away from the touristic center of Catania, but very well worth a visit. Entry is just a few Euros for the church, the back room and, most importantly, the roof. And that roof offers an amazing few over Catania and up to the Etna. Seriously, go there and have a look!
Sven W — Google review
We were told about this place from a lovely guy who took us on the tour for teatro messimo and we’re weren’t disappointed! Only a few euros to get in to this absolute beauty. You have to pay in cash but it stays open a little later than 17:30. The view from the top is arguably the best panoramic view of the city and when we went there were only two other people up there so it was very quiet. Lots of important history with this church and the surrounding area so make sure to use the audio guide and look up more info on the place. Thanks!
Caïna V — Google review
Beautiful church like almost all 130 churches in Catania. The highlight is the top of the dome of the church which you can go to. Fantastic 360 degree view of the city and Etna. Absolutely worth going up there. Entrance was 5€
Sven — Google review
Worthwile location to visit while in Catania. Great rooftop view. Breathtaking and inspiring. Careful - visits seem to end at around 12.00 (maybe lunch break/siesta) so plan accordingly. Entrance costs 4 euro.
Razvan M — Google review
Sorry but this is the most/only disappointing European church I have ever been in. First, it's €4 to even see the inside. Fine, we heard from our last church guide that the view is fantastic. The main congregation hall is nice, but every other (free) church nearby has a similar look. I had hoped the stairs would be historic, but no, just brutalist cement steps leading to a barren brutalist cement rooftop. I attached a video of the view so you can see for yourself; it looks cropped, but I just filmed above the brutalist cement wall. What's crazy is there are so many nice churches and monasteries nearby with so much to explore that are free to enter.. I feel like I paid a tourist tax for not doing my research 😅
Jiaqi Z — Google review
If you visit only one church, I would recommend this one! Very nice architecture, amazing view from the rooftop. You can climb three flights of stairs right up to the top of the roof. Enjoy the amazing view, and try the bells
Nóra K — Google review
I'd say this is a mandatory place to visit in this city. Make sure you don't miss the upper levels of the tower as you can get all the way to the very top of the tower - there are three levels, starting with a terazza, then interior and then the outside on the top of the roof of the tower. You can see the whole city from this place. The church itself is now defunct
Zbigniew M — Google review

Lungomare di Piazza Europa is an exceptional destination where the volcanic rock meets the ocean, providing a unique and breathtaking experience. However, there is a concern regarding the disposal of garbage along the cliffside. It is suggested that more lighting should be installed in the evenings to improve visibility for those who wish to stroll along this beautiful spot, especially during winter months. Despite these challenges, this scenic location offers one of the finest coastal views worldwide.

Casa di Giovanni Verga is a historically significant site located in Catania, Sicily, on the East coast facing the Ionian Sea. Situated on the second floor of a nineteenth-century palace in Via Sant'Anna, this well-preserved house was once the home of the famous Italian writer Giovanni Verga. Now part of the regional museum, it showcases intact furnishings and personal items that belonged to Verga.
A true gem in the heart of the historic center of Catania. Giovanni Verga's apartment, one of the most influential Sicialian writer, active in the second half of the 19th century, in Catania. AMAZING PERSONAL LIBRARY OF THE AUTHOR.

The Museo Vincenzo Bellini is a museum located in the eighteenth-century Gravina Cruylas building in Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi 3, Catania. It was inaugurated in 1930 and serves as the former home of the renowned 19th-century opera composer Vincenzo Bellini.
Great little museum with a lot of interactive places, we were pleasantly surprised! My kids enjoyed a lot evem though they're not super excited for museums in general. Recommended!
Jelena P — Google review
A beautiful museum. I particularly enjoyed the section about Bellini’s work more than the family home itself. It’s well-documented and very interactive, offering great insight into both the man and his music.
A G — Google review
This tribute to Bellini's music beats Saltzburg's to Mozart, Bonn's to Beethoven and Pesaro's for Rossini. It does so with a series of rooms set up like theatres. Each play the story of part of his life and his best know arias. There is also a museum in the flat where his family lived. This tells his story but is much less inspirational.
JRG — Google review
A great little museum based in the building where Bellini was born. Go upstairs first and see short films taking you through his short but highly successful life. You don't go to see the house, it's just blank rooms historically BUT they have been creatively and beautifully designed so you feel like you might be in a theatre. Then go downstairs and see some more detail specifically relating to his life in Catania, his return as a successful composer and his final return after his death. You also get entry to a modern art gallery up the road, but didn't have time for that. I feel sorry that people leave bad reviews for a place they didn't go into.
Pat L — Google review
I had the pleasure of visiting Museo Belliniano recently and I must say, I was thoroughly impressed with the experience. The museum is very well curated and offers a unique glimpse into the life and works of the artist Vincenzo Bellini. One of the standout features of the museum is the combination of historical items that surrounded Bellini, from instruments and partitions to letters and a death mask. This collection provides an immersive experience that truly allows visitors to understand the artist and his place in history. In addition to the historical items, the museum also features unique objects and videos based on epistolary dialogues, as well as settings recreating opera elements. These elements, along with the knowledgeable tour guides, really bring Bellini's life and works to life. One of the things that struck me was the group of lovely students who were guiding visitors. They were clearly well-prepared and had a deep interest in their own history, which was very heartwarming to see. Overall, I would highly recommend Museo Belliniano to anyone interested in art, history, or simply in having a unique and immersive experience. It truly felt like a privilege to have this opportunity to learn about Bellini's life from his own perspective, and I cannot wait to return again in the future.

The Church of Sant'Agata la Vetere is a fascinating historical site located in Catania. It was the old cathedral and is said to be the location of one of the martyrs of Saint Agatha. The remains of the original church, destroyed by earthquakes, are visible, and there are two sarcophagi that once contained the saint's remains. Visitors can access small underground crypts for a fee to explore further.
One of most beautiful sunsets that you can see from the top tower of this church. Beautiful inside and outside. Highly recommend to visit
