Huaca 'El Dragon', also known as Huaca del Arco Iris, is a captivating archaeological site located near Chan Chan in Trujillo. This ancient temple, made entirely of adobe, served as a ceremonial and administrative center. Its walls are adorned with murals featuring anthropomorphic figures representing a rainbow. The complex includes a museum and offers access to adjacent sites like Huaca Esmeralda.
Unbelievable and unreal. So fascinating. I felt like I was seeing the whole history scrolling under my eyes.
X — Google review
Bigger than its emerald counterpart, it's part of the CHIMÚ route, it's also known as the raibow ruin (huaca arcoíris in spanish) due to its having rainbow shaped carvings on many of its walls, which are a representation of the rain god, who, according to them, made it rain after given the required tribute. The temple itself is rather small compared to chan chan, but at least yoou can stand on top of it
Martin B — Google review
1 0f 4 places you get in with your chan Chan ticket. It was either 3 or 10 soles.(1 or 3 dollars us) I cant remember. Chan Chan is big. The other 2 sites are pretty small. Then you have the museum. See if you can't get a taxi to take you to all of them for 50 soles. (S15)

La Huaca de la Luna is a large pyramid in Trujillo, Peru, built by the Moche civilization as a site for worship and human sacrifice. The town was once the capital of both the Moche and Chimu civilizations, with each leaving incredible legacies showcasing their advancements.
If taking a collectivo, we got a van at the corner of Av. Los Incas and Francisco de Zelda (across from Vidrieria Munoz). 2.50/person. Try and arrive at the gate by 9 to buy tickets. First tour (included in the 10 sole price, cannot walk alone through the temple) was at 9:30, you'll have the entire site to yourself and ~8 other people. Our favorite site in all of the north of Peru. The tour guides work on tips, but unlike some of the other sites, no one is a tout or is pushy. We did not visit the museum as the tour buses started arriving at 11 and we wanted to savor the quiet and simplicity of the site.
Samantha — Google review
We had to wait because they only have entrance with the guide at specific times and I didn't know! Bring a hat and suncream for the sun, it's really hot! Sunglasses good for the sand flying with the wind. The entrance is 10soles for 1h guided tour and it's a really nice interesting place. They are lot restoring the building nor the drawing and be able to see clearly still colored drawings, sculptures for me was impressive. Easy to reach with s colectivo that leaves in front of it for 2$ one way! Just outside the museum and where you get the tickets, along the street from where you arrive from Trujillo, you will have s nice place where to eat a whole menù for 10 soles and the lady the is amazing and give big portions too!
Simona A — Google review
Very great experience. Wilber was an excellent guide and had lots of great information. We thought the detail in the carvings was stunning and that there is sooooo much history in Peru that goes way beyond Machu Picchu. What a great place to learn more about pre Inca culture.
Danielle C — Google review
We visited Huaca de la Luna in late August 2025. In my opinion, this is a truly underrated archeological site. The walls and paintings are so well preserved as I have not seen it in other Moche sites in northern Peru. It is absolutely worth a visit if you pass by Trujillo and have a (half) day to spare. I would even go so far as to say, I would prefer it over Chan Chan (if you have to choose one). Here is some information that might be helpful for your visit: 1) Transport: you can get here with a collectivo, bit since we had limited time we opted for a taxi. Using the InDrive-App we paid only 12 Soles from the city center. 2) Entry fee: currently the regular fee is 10 Soles for the Huaca itself and 5 Soles on top if you want to visit the museum. Note that the ticket office is at the entrance to the museum (5 min walk away from the entry to the Huaca). 3) Guide: it is mandatory to have a guide to visit the Huaca. However, it's on a "pay what you want" basis. From what we saw, people give 5-10 Soles per person. They even had an englisch speaking guide. And having a guide here was absolutely worth it as he provided many insights in the history of the site and the Moche culture. Enjoy your visit!
Dmitry S — Google review
This area is far more fascinating the people creating this stuff are over 1000 years before the Inca making it far more impressive
David M — Google review
Nice place to visit. I arrived before the gate opened but the ticket person mentioned the tour starts at 10 instead so by the time I got there it was pretty crowded. However the museum was not. The guide blazed through the site in half and hour and barely stopped for photos. We also didn't visit one of the buildings that a private tour visited
Guiping X — Google review
Was worth 10 soles + 5 for the museum (can't take pics). You don't need to pay a tour guide company. Ask for a bus (public bus - walk towards a busy street that has many buses and you will find one that goes directly there). 2 soles is the cost.
Antoine A — Google review
Very interesting archeological site. Must do when in Trujillo. Unfortunately we were added to a spanish tour. When asked if there are also english tours it was said to us that we need to arrange this at the ticket counter - but there no one made us aware of it.

Trujillo Cathedral Basilica, also known as La Catedral, is a rebuilt 17th-century cathedral located in Trujillo, Peru. Its striking yellow facade stands out against the surrounding architecture and is especially impressive when illuminated at night. The cathedral features twin bell towers and houses a museum of religious artwork. Destroyed by an earthquake in the 18th century, it was soon rebuilt with Rococo interiors and Baroque altarpieces.

The art in this Cathedral is exceptional. Carvings and paintings are the highest quality. This is an active church. Some paintings are haunting while others are uplifting. There are many realistic sculptures of Jesus being crucified. There are also several depictions of saints. If in Trujillo make time to visit and spend some time.

When visiting Trujillo, don't miss out on the opportunity to explore Huaca Esmeralda, a smaller but equally captivating Chimu Temple dating back to the early days of the Chimu culture. Uncovered accidentally in the 1920s, this site features ancient wall drawings depicting fishing nets, waves, and birds. While Chan Chan is the main attraction in the area, your ticket also grants access to Huacas del Sol y de la Luna and Huaca Arco Iris.
Not a lot to see at this site.
Vlad Ţ — Google review
Very pretty but I don't like what's happening around the area. It's in a neighborhood down the street from a mall. When you walk to the top level all you see is buildings and construction. They've done a good job of preserving it but it's surrounded by modern concrete that takes away from the experience.

La Huaca del Sol is a significant archaeological site in the region, built by the Moche civilization. It served as a royal residence, ceremony site, and burial chamber. The complex includes the Temples of the Sun and the Moon, with the latter featuring phenomenal multicolored friezes. While the larger Huaca del Sol is closed to visitors, La Huaca de la Luna offers well-preserved structures and remarkable polychrome murals on its multi-story wall.
So you really should come and join a guided tour (available in Spanish, English and French every hour or so), we did almost 2 hours and it was possibly the best pyramids in Peru we have visited (mostly thanks to the University that runs it). The explanations were really good, the route was nice, lots of shade and lots of conserved murals and structures to see. It's about 20 soles in an Uber from the city, 10 soles entry (+5 soles for the museum) and a guide is by donation (we gave 15 soles each).
Matthew B — Google review
Very interesting site! We had a lovely tour guide (sadly I don’t quite remember here name, Even?). The tours are free on a donation basis. They have tours in English and Spanish with the last English tour being at 3.15pm. Only annoying and rude thing was that the ticket seller sold us museum tickets even though it was only open for 8 more min (until 4pm)! I understand that the site needs money but this is not the way to get it. If you’re in Trujillo you should definitely check out this site!
Flowerly — Google review
The "Temple of the Sun" Huace del Sol is another Pyramid-style ceremonial place of the Moche civilization. Located close to the Temple of the Moon, just outside of Trujillo. Unfortunately the Spanish Colonial Forces destroyed a lot of this site after their search for gold. The site itself still is an impressive reminder on the high capabilities in architecture of pre-Colombian civilizations.
Tee K — Google review
Great to see the sun temple and be part of a tour group where the pictures / significance is explained. Some places were badly destroyed but you can see they are actively trying to keep what is left preserved.
Kara H — Google review
I had never heard of this civilization. Well preserved tiles, especially considering they are mud brick. The people who lived there were some blood-thirsty MFers.
Scott M — Google review
I wound up walking in since I took a Moche colectivo instead of one that comes direct to the museum. That worked well because the onsite tours do not visit Huaca del Sol. They go through Huaca de Luna. There are signs indicating that you shouldn't attempt to climb the pyramid. It was nice that I could see it up close as I walked the rest of the way to the fee station.
Mike M — Google review
Amazing place, museum was informative and had explanations in English. Our English guide Rosemary was really good and the guide service was included in the entrance fee (10 soles for site and 5 for museum). Definitely recommend thoroughly enjoyed.

This is something which you don't want to miss. If you are a history buff and like knowing the story of the people of Peru, this is a great stop! Away from the city, you can get a real feel for what it meant to be a part of the Peruvian civilizations of old!

Museo Huacas de Moche is a modern museum located five kilometers south of Trujillo, showcasing the history and artifacts of the Moche culture. The museum features interpretive displays with a focus on ceramics and figurines excavated from the nearby temples, Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna. These temples are significant structures in pre-Hispanic Peru, offering insight into ancient civilizations.
We came to the museum solely to get the tickets for the temple of the moon. Because we had to wait for about 35 minutes for the next guide and there was a discount in the ticket price if we also wanted to go into the museum, we decided to go. We were so glad we did. This has to be the best museum we have visited in Peru. The display is spacious, bright, clean and modern. The exhibits are exquisitely restored and very fascinating, they are also quite different from other locations we have been. We only wish we had visited the museum after the Temple in order to spend more time.

David M — Google review
Great museum, go here first before hitting the actual archeological site.
Luis P — Google review
This is a super cool archeological site to visit! I really enjoyed the free tour, it was very informative. You’ll need to pay with cash! You have to buy your entrance tickets by the museum so I recommend going into the museum first and then walking up to the huacas. There is a free tour that starts on the hour every hour (in Spanish) that was very informative. Bring a tip for the tour guides! They’re archeological students at the national university of Trujillo. I recommend taking the combi from ovalo grau. They’re way cheaper than a taxi and they pick people up every 10 minutes or so from the huaca area.
Emily C — Google review
Small, but definitely worth seeing! Has very interesting artifacts from local ancient cultures.

When I walked up a tour to Huaca de Luna was about to start. So, I wasn't offered a tour in English; I'm guessing you'd have to make an English reservation somehow. I could understand pieces of the Spanish, but really enjoyed walking through the pyramid. I think this is better than Chan Chan. It's 10 soles for the tour and 5 for the museum. The museum is pretty sparse. The tour guide works for tips and as I understand is a university student. You can take a Mochica Chimú (there are more of these) or Sol y Luna colectivo direct to here for 2.5 soles. They pick you up at Ovalo Grau.

The food was as good as anywhere else and the coffee/passado was fine. The staff was dressed smartly, and the restaurant presented well. On the other hand, it was a big restaurant with very few customers, yet there were multiple items on the mine that they didn’t have; and the waiter didn’t know. He kept coming back to say each item was not available. For example, only one out of four salads was available. They forgot to order our drinks, so when the food finally came out, we had to remind the waiter and he then ordered them at the bar. And they didn’t have any black tea either. Really guys, for an international tourist destination, you need to get your act together.

Real Plaza Trujillo stands out as a vibrant shopping destination in Peru, boasting over 30 diverse establishments that cater to various tastes and needs. With its extensive range of stores, including well-known brands and a large grocery store, visitors can enjoy a fulfilling shopping experience. The food court offers an array of dining options, making it perfect for families or friends looking to grab a bite after shopping.
With the latest improvements it's better now. There are several stores , but it could be more. Maybe their staff could be nicer.

As far as shopping centers go in small towns in Peru, this one is pretty nice. Has a big grocery store and a food court with many restaurants. All the way in the back near the Movistar office they have an ATM from Banco de la Nacion (I think it says MultiRed on it) that does not charge a fee for withdrawals by foreigners. Lots of stores to visit.

The Catholic Church in Belen is a beautiful old building that is still in use today. The church was originally built in 1614, but has been restored over the years after earthquakes. (Translated by Google) I do not recommend going to this church at all. My family decided to have my nephew's baptism here, where I was the godmother, and the priest openly insulted me during the ceremony just for having tattoos. This is unacceptable. Furthermore, they demand money from you for absolutely everything. You already pay for the mass, but this church has a member who, at the end of the ceremony, harasses you to donate even more money. It was the worst experience I have ever had in a place that is supposed to be sacred and respectful. The constant lack of respect from your staff is outrageous. After this, I honestly don't want to set foot in a church again. This experience has only reaffirmed my perception that the Catholic church is opportunistic and performs its ceremonies in a superficial manner. Appalling.

Chan Chan is a significant pre-Columbian archaeological site in America, known for its vast adobe complex adorned with art and carvings. Located just 10 minutes from Huanchaco, it attracts numerous tourists daily. The ruins are part of a larger adventure that includes nearby sites like the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna and Huaca de Bruja. For surfers, the proximity to Huanchaco's renowned surf makes it an appealing destination.
I can't believe Chan Chan isn't more well known and visited. It's an amazing archeological site with interesting history. If you enjoyed Machu Picchu, the history and culture, then make the trip north to Trujillo and see Chan Chan. It's a different culture and history, but no less interesting.

It was great and really interesting and if you have kids then they would be really engaged if you hire a tour guide
Gabriel — Google review
Certainly Chan Chan is one of the historically highly important archeological sites in the country. However, from a visitor's perspective the site has a few drawbacks. First, there is very little to no information at the archeological spots (only some in the museum). At the main site you can not even tell what is "original" and what was reconstructed. Second, the complex is large and scattered across the area (the ticket covers four spots) - you either need a driver or be prepared to walk quiet a lot. There is also no information on where to start and which route to take between the four spots. Of you habe the time, pay this site a visit and decide for yourself. Bit if you have to choose, I would personally recommend Huaca de Luna instead for a half-day trip.

Absolutely impressive site! The ruins of Chan Chan are huge and give you a real sense of the scale of this ancient city. It’s very well maintained and easy to explore, with detailed explanations about the culture and history of the Chimú civilization. Walking through the palaces and seeing the geometric and animal designs on the walls is truly fascinating. A must-visit if you’re in Trujillo!
Adrian H — Google review
I think the chan chan site itself was not as impressive as I originally thought. Not a lot of parts of the chan chan ancient city was open to public so the visit to the chan chan site itself was not very long. There are not a lot of description or reconstruction pictures shown on site so it all depends on the guide. Our guide was excellent so it was ok but the site itself was not well presented. It was also not very crowded during our visit. Must visit the museum beforehand or else you won’t know what is happening out there.

This visit is a must go !! I definitely recommend to visit this place and to take a guide (60 soles). With a guide it is much more easy to project oneself in the culture and lifestyle of the Chimu and understand the interaction between different cultures in Peru (Moche, Chimu, Inka). Without a guide, you won’t be able to catch all the details and subtleties of this place!

The Plaza de Armas of Trujillo is a vibrant and beautifully landscaped square that serves as the heart of this historic city. Celebrating Trujillo's independence with its striking central sculpture, the monument to Liberty crafted by German sculptor Edmund Moeller, it draws visitors in with its charm. This plaza is not just a picturesque spot; it's also surrounded by stunning architecture featuring colorful facades that reflect the city's rich history from both the Viceroyalty and Republican eras.
One of the nicest plazas in Peru. It’s also the cleanest. Sunsets and early evenings in the plaza are beautiful. All the glowing bikes, toy cars and other neon-colored light up toys just made the place so much more beautiful.

Very cool colourful city centre but a lot of people and cars all the time

Really cool place in the center of Trujillo. Safe, lots of families around and security is solid. The architecture is really beautiful and it is a nice space, and there are also many great restaurants within one block of the plaza itself. Must-visit place if you’re visiting Trujillo or Huanchaco.
Chris C — Google review
Beautiful main square! A vibrant and historic place surrounded by colonial architecture and colorful buildings. The central monument is impressive, and the atmosphere is lively both during the day and in the evening. A great spot to start exploring Trujillo and enjoy the local vibe.
Adrian H — Google review
A pleasant surprise, an architectural treat lots of beautiful old colonial administrative buildings around this huge square, clean and hassle free. Some nice restaurants and coffee shops around the square to definitely worth a visit.

My favourite Plaza de Armas in Peru. An open and spacious square surrounded by colourful colonial architecture with a monument dedicated to the fight for independence.

Ancient, Moche-era archeological complex with ruins, art, wall designs, a mummy & various artifacts.
We started our trip at 10 am at Trujillo center and finished around 3:30pm.The pieces of art is great . The lady of chaos is the unique piece in the north of Peru in such a great preservation, showing the importance of this woman in that place. You will need to pay s/10 for entry to the museum. I will recommend to accept only payments in order to avoid problems to people who don't carry cash. Toilets very clean and everything well organized.
Henreli C — Google review
I spent some really interesting hours in the archaeological complex El Brujo. It covers thousands of years of uninterrupted human occupation. The complex is situated about 70 km north of Trujillo. It is about a 45 minutes drive from Trujillo and absolutely worth the trip. The latest excavations carried out at the pyramid called Huaca Cao have revealed a ceremonial site that is 1800 years old. It was built with the intention to bury a royal person. They found a mummified young female person. The condition of the mummy was so good that the could see tattooes on different parts of her body. We could see the body in the museum. She was called: La dama de Cao, (The Lady of Cao) and we could see a lot of artefacts and jewellery. After seeing the museum, we walked around in the huaca, and it was really interesting. This was the Moche culture, and I recommend reading about the Moche before you visit El Brujo. And it is also interesting to make a stop in the nearby village Magdalena de Cao. Lots of nice paintings on the walls of the houses.
Alfhild H — Google review
I most see if you already saw Chan Chan, Huaca del sol and Huaca de la Luna. They have a " mummified woman ruler". The site is one hour away from the city of Trujillo but the trip is worth it.
Gian S — Google review
Awesome site! Didn’t see a witch or wizard but the paintings and walls were very impressive! One of the better sites around Trujillo, and quite straightforward to reach without a tour, just leave yourself plenty of time for the return as the colectivo was slow to fill back from Magdalena
Tristan R — Google review
The archaeological site of El Brujo is absolutely amazing! The ruins are impressive and the museums are very well organized and informative. This was an important ceremonial complex of the Moche culture, dating back to around 100–750 AD. You can still see the remains of pyramids, temples, and incredible murals that tell stories of rituals and daily life. One of the highlights is learning about the Señora de Cao, a female ruler discovered here, whose tomb and artifacts are beautifully displayed in the museum. A fascinating place that combines history, culture, and stunning views of the coast—definitely worth the visit!
Adrian H — Google review
This place was see inspiring considering it was built 1000 years before the Incas. You could easily spend all day walking around
David M — Google review
Not quite as impressive size wise as some of the other archeological sites we had visited. However the number of tombs discovered so far really give an insight to the changing burial techniques over time. A lack of funds has temporarily stopped any further excavation. If you visit Peru it is still worth the effort.
David F — Google review
Pyramids nowhere near as impressive as later Inca, Azrec or Mayan structures and they have been greatly eroded by rain. However the excavations show an advanced culture fir ghe time. The museum gives an excellent interpretation and there is a room full of gold clothing, ornaments etc that the Spaniards missed giving us all a better insight into the distant. past

Casa Campo Alcor - Show Restaurante is a delightful destination that offers an unforgettable experience for visitors in Trujillo. This charming venue showcases the rich traditions of Peruvian equestrian arts and dance, featuring well-trained horses and talented performers. Guests are welcomed with warm hospitality from the owner, who takes pride in his beautiful stallions. The show includes captivating displays of horsemanship alongside vibrant dances like the Paso and Marinera, all set against a picturesque ranch backdrop.
Una experiencia muy bien! 6 of us went for lunch (delicious pisco sours and food), and truly enjoyed the show with talented dancers, horses and caballeros. It was very interesting to learn more about Peruvian culture and only 30 soles a person. Highly recommend watching this show!

Ticket prices are s/30 per person. Opportunity for a horse ride at the end of the show for s/10. Two shows a day, one at 13h30 and the second at 14h30 Amazing exhibition of traditional Peruvian mastery of equestrian arts as well as dance. The hospitality is great and the presentation professional and friendly. Great place to take kids and family. Would recommend to anyone who is visiting Trujillo.

We went to a show here in March 2019. Absolutely loved it. It was local and the people so friendly. The owner was so lovely, and so proud of his horses. The horses themselves were well trained and beautiful. I have never stood and petted a stallion that was sooo placid and calm. They gave us a lovely show of horsemanship and of dancers. Our hearts melted when they brought out the latest foal and gave us a close up opportunity. This show must surely be visited - very good value.
Jules P — Google review
We went to the horse and marinera show and had a nice lunch while watching. Both the horses and dancers put on a great presentation. You can take pictures with them at the end and have the possibility of riding the horses. It was a great day and I highly recommend it!

This is a great show and great value. The Paso and Marinera are great to see on this ranch style environment, on the land. Nice atmosphere and scenic with space for a proper show. Intimate nice setting and wonderful performance and talent. It a must see if you're in Trujillo. Once in a life time chance. I might even try to see it again.

The Trujillo Toy Museum, located in a colonial mansion in the historic center of Trujillo, Peru, is a charming destination showcasing a wide variety of toys from around the world. The museum is owned by renowned artist Geraldo Chavez and features his vast private collection, including porcelain dolls, lead soldiers, miniature wooden houses, automobiles, ships, and marionettes.
Great place to see all types of toys over the years. Fun to be with children.
Himadri P — Google review
It's a nice place to look back into your childhood. It's not so big, you can see everything in less than 15 minutes. But the concept behind the museum and the message with it is worthy enough to take some time and give it a chance.
Anahi ( — Google review
This is a private museum which showcases toys donated to the museum as old as 1000 years old presumed to be toys. It is on a second floor of a renovated neo-colonial building; which its only access is a very steep wooden stair. Since its not funded by the government; all donations are what keeps it running so please give it a visit if you are not injured or impaired. :/

The museum boasts exceptional layout and ambiance, seamlessly blending modern design with historical significance. Loved it. It was 5 soles to get in. (Less the $2) it had some cool stuff.

Nice archeological museum, with overview of the main cultures. Well worth popping in ! Mind that the museum closes at 16:30
Migchel M — Google review
It was a nice small museum with a very good overview to Peru pre-Inca history, especially those regarding the north. It was small but there were a lot of exhibits. However, there is absolutely not a single English word in the museum. If you do not understand Spanish, you definitely have to hire a guide. Mine comes with the city tour but she’s super professional with the museum tour as well. The building itself is in colonial style and very beautiful as well.
Celia Y — Google review
This museum has a fine collection of artifacts spanning many of the cultures that lived in the La Libertad region. The building that contains the museum is lovely but needs some modernization.

Plazuela El Recreo is a charming pedestrian zone in Trujillo, surrounded by vibrant buildings and adorned with fountains. It's home to the first fountain of Trujillo, crafted from Italian Baroque marble. The square also features the imposing doorway that leads to the mountains and an old pool that once graced Plaza Mayor. This well-maintained area is encircled by colonial buildings and offers a glimpse into the city's history, including an intriguing underground system from past centuries.

(Translated by Google) The cathedral museum of Trujillo houses interesting paintings from the Cuzco and Quito schools, as well as sculptures and part of the frescoes that decorated its old crypt. It would be interesting, however, to have more information about the works on display, but whoever runs the museum provides relevant information if asked. The entrance fee is quite modest (4 soles), although the collection is small for a cathedral of the importance it had, there are probably more works in the process of restoration that can be seen later.
