Cathedral
Catholic church
Saint Tryphon's Cathedral, located in Kotor, Montenegro, is a Romanesque Catholic church dating back to 1166. The cathedral houses a collection of gold and silver religious relics as well as stunning frescoes. It is one of only two Roman Catholic cathedrals in Montenegro and is dedicated to the town's patron saint. The cathedral has undergone several reconstructions due to earthquakes over the centuries but still retains its Romanesque architecture inside.
Saint Tryphon's Cathedral is located in the v center of the Kotor Old town. It was built in 1166 and one of Montenegro's picturesque sites. It has been reconstructed several times after several earthquakes. In the earthquake in 1667, the entire frontage was destroyed, it was reconstructed with addition of the baroque bell towers. Worth visiting it.
Soudamini M — Google review
Beautiful cathedral. Some of the paintings in the walls resisted the earthquakes and have an interesting orthodox style, very rare to see in a Roman Catholic church.
Luis A — Google review
Worth a visit. Lots of interesting artifacts on display including some 1200yr old human remains. A good view of the square
Richard W — Google review
Only €4 entrance per person (cash only), pretty cathedral with a small museum upstairs with balcony overlooking the square. It is very well maintained and a must see in Kotor old town.
Patrice O — Google review
This time we visit the Roman Catholic cathedral, one of only two in Montenegro. Built on the site of a church dating back to 809, it has never been completely destroyed, despite numerous earthquakes, and its structure has changed each time it has been rebuilt. The interior is simple, devoid of opulence, gold, or jewels.

Built on the site of the earlier church (809 by Andrija (Andreaccio) Saracenis), the cathedral was consecrated on 19 June 1166. Was seriously damaged and rebuilt after the 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake.

They charge a 4 euro donation to enter. They don't allow anyone without a guide to enter. Just in case, I returned two hours later, but still many people were unable to enter. They should just charge an entrance fee. And pay taxes, too.

The Maritime Museum in Kotor, Montenegro is a long-standing institution that offers a captivating insight into the town's maritime legacy. Housed within the elegant Grgurina Palace, this museum boasts an array of nautical history exhibits such as model ships, paintings, furniture, navigational instruments, maps and documents. Visitors can immerse themselves in Kotor's seafaring traditions and learn about its strategic significance as a bustling port during the Venetian and Austro-Hungarian periods.
Absolutely amazing, I definitely recommend visiting this museum, I had no clue that Montenegro used to be such a big port and have connections with other countries such as China! The boat models are stunning and charming, the weapons are so cool! The paintings are so beautiful! Definitely one of the most interesting places in Kotor!
Jovana — Google review
This is a quality museum. We usually visit all Maritime Museums and this is a wonderful museum with a good layout and good exhibits. Kotor and Montenegro has a maritime history to be proud. The museum is going to undergo a renovation apparently so may be different next summer. Be sure to take the audio tour because it makes the experience richer. It took us just over 2 hours with the audio tour. Lots of documentation from the early days to the World Wars. Not to be missed.
Phae D — Google review
The Maritime Museum of Kotor offers a fascinating insight into the history of this beautiful port city. If you’re into ships, sailing and everything related to life at sea, this is definitely worth a visit. The collection is varied, with ship models, old maps, uniforms, and maritime artifacts. There’s an audio guide available, but I only listened to it for the exhibits I found most interesting which worked perfectly. A great way to spend some time in Kotor and learn more about its seafaring past!
Kevin — Google review
Definitely the best museum in Kotor and as I was leaving at midday I was glad to see it had an early opening time of 8.00am. I hadn't realised that Montenegro had such a rich Maritime history; I had previously visited the Maritime museum in Dubrovnik, but this is far better & bigger. There are a large number of exhibits and some great paintings of the old sailing ships. There is a very good "weapons room" showcasing many long barrel rifles dating back to 17th & 18th centuries and I liked the display of navigational aids; Sextants, Octants, Chronometers and Inclinometer (tilt guage).
Miles M — Google review
This is a nice museum about the Maritime history of Dubrovnik. It takes you through different stages from the peak to the nadir of Dubrovnik’s navy. This museum is included in your city pass, it is quite small so maybe if you would have to pay the normal entrance fee it wouldn’t be worth your while. The whole museum it is only one room. It is also a little bit annoying that for many of the exhibits there is no English translation of their names of descriptions.
Nefeli P — Google review
Great museum for the maritime lovers to understand about the history of Kotor. Lots of artifacts and pictures on display. They provide audio guide as well as English descriptions on most items
J — Google review
We went to this museum on Saturday morning, in summer, not too much people. The ticket costs 6€ with the audio guide in different languages. In the Museum you mainly see the things related to Kotor and Kotor bey during last centuries. Overall nice museum, worthy to go in one time
Mkhitar G — Google review
Very interesting exhibition and description how one of the strongest ship cargo companies - Jugoocean, was destroyed by UN sanctions placed because of the civil war in Jugoslavia. Also recommend visit museum of money in Cetinje to get informations about the inflation from the same period (prices doubled every 16 hours!)

The Church of St. Mary Collegiate, dating back to the 13th century, is a significant religious site in Kotor's Old Town. It was constructed on the foundation of an ancient Christian church and features alternating rows of delicate pink and grey stone. The church also boasts a beautiful tall Bell Tower that can be seen from outside the fortress walls. Visitors can explore its interior for a fee, which grants access to medieval and Renaissance religious artifacts within the museum.
The entrance to the museum costs 4€. At first we wouldn't pay for it, but then we read a comment here that persuaded us, that that is a good use of money. I haven't regretted this, as there is really something to see, especially if you are interested in Medieval and Renaissance history of religion.
Diana — Google review
Built in 1221 over the former site of a 6th century Basilica. Unfortunately the 16th century frescoes have largely disappeared.

The Clock Tower of Kotor is a prominent landmark located at the southern end of the main square in the Old Town. It serves as a popular meeting point due to its central location and is surrounded by numerous restaurants and cafes. The tower, built in 1602, features a unique blend of Baroque and Gothic architectural elements.
The Kotor Old Town Clock Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in Kotor, Montenegro. Located in the heart of the medieval Old Town, this historic 17th-century tower stands proudly in the main square, near the entrance gate. Its slightly tilted structure adds to its charm and history, making it a great spot for photos. While exploring, take time to enjoy the surrounding Venetian-style architecture, cozy cafes, and vibrant local markets. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon will allow you to experience its beauty with fewer crowds. Don’t forget to explore the nearby fortress walls for stunning panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor!
Hsyn S — Google review
We visited Kotor for the first time on a cruise in the Mediterranean. Had to take the tender from the ship to the dock. We then self guided our tour using Google maps and my research. The Clock Tower in the Armory Square is beautiful and well restored. Lots of activity in the Square with many choices for coffee and food. We did not have time to go inside the tower but did enjoy looking at the outside.
Perry H — Google review
The Kotor City Clock Tower is one of several landmarks in the town of Kotor. Construction of the Baroque and Gothic styled clock originally began in 1602. It was subsequently rebuilt in 1979 following an earthquake. The Clock Tower serves as a good meeting point for tourist group, friends and families who came to visit the city and decided to break up to wander on their own and then to meet again later. Grateful for the opportunity to be here.
Rahmah R — Google review
Beautiful main square when you enter from the Seaside Entrance Gate. The Sea Gate (West Gate) entrance, you will immediate come across an attractive town square with an old clock tower. Construction of the Baroque and Gothic styled clock originally began in 1602. It was subsequently rebuilt in 1979 following an earthquake.
Buster I — Google review
The Kotor Clock Tower is... fine, but nothing special. It’s one of the main landmarks in the old town, but honestly, it’s just a basic clock on a worn-out stone tower. No access inside, no real information around it, and not much to engage with besides snapping a quick photo. It sits in the main square surrounded by touristy restaurants, so you'll probably pass by it anyway—but it's hardly worth going out of your way for. For something that’s supposed to be a highlight, it felt pretty underwhelming. Just another old structure in a town that doesn’t offer much beyond surface-level charm.
H U — Google review
Standing since 1602, it was rebuilt after the 1979 earthquake. It formerly served as a place for the presentation of prisoners and their public ridicule. It undoubtedly stands out in the square.
Lucca T — Google review
• The tower is not an extensive attraction with interior tours for most visitors. It’s primarily an exterior landmark rather than a museum or vantage platform. Many reviews say “worth a quick photo rather than a long stop”. • Because it’s in the main square and close to cruise-ship docking points, it can get crowded, especially when many tourists enter the Old Town at once. If you want a quieter experience or unobstructed photos, go early morning or later in the afternoon. • As with many old historic towers, the neighborhood around it is a preserved “old town” environment — the ground is cobbled and the space is busy, so if you have mobility concerns or luggage, be mindful of the surface and traffic. • Since it’s a landmark rather than an “experience” with amenities, it is best combined with other nearby visits (Old Town walk, city walls, cathedral) rather than being the main reason to visit Kotor.
Amrit D — Google review
Such a beautiful clock tower right past the entry gate. Be sure to say hello to the cats that seem to run the city. The cats are very friendly. I'd recommend coming during the off-season, like we did. It's a small town and I could imagine it being very crowded during the summer.

Our Lady of the Rocks is a small man-made island with a 17th-century Roman Catholic church and museum. Visitors can embark on a day trip from Kotor, which includes stops at Bijela for swimming, Mamula Island, the Blue Cave, Yugoslavian tunnels, and Porto Montenegro for lunch. The tour culminates with a visit to Our Lady of the Rocks where guests can explore the church and museum before heading back to Kotor.
I wouldn't give anything different than 5 stars for this location. It's a small picturesque island, easily accessible by boat from Perast (5 EUR per person, two way ticket, the boat is available every 10 minutes). The Church has a fee, 3 EUR per person. It's small but beautiful, has a museum inside and you can learn some history for the area. And the views from the island are more than spectacular. The place is a must visit if you plan to go to Montenegro.
Violina P — Google review
Visiting Our Lady of the Rocks was an absolute highlight of my trip to Montenegro! Perched gracefully on its tiny man-made island in the Bay of Kotor, this stunning church feels like something out of a fairytale. The boat ride over is breathtaking, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and sparkling Adriatic waters, and then suddenly the island appears—small, serene, and steeped in history. The church itself is a gem, adorned with beautiful frescoes, intricate paintings, and an atmosphere that radiates peace and devotion. Every corner tells a story, from the legend of the seamen who created the island stone by stone, to the centuries of faith preserved within its walls. The museum attached is small but fascinating, housing a rich collection of artifacts and votive offerings left by sailors. What struck me most was the sense of harmony between the island, the church, and the surrounding nature—it feels like a sacred meeting point between humanity and the sea. Whether you’re religious, a history lover, or simply someone seeking beauty and tranquility, Our Lady of the Rocks is a must-visit.
Vello P — Google review
The church is located on a small island and the atmosphere is very pleasant when you get there. The island is in the middle of the Bay of Kotor, you can see Perast well from the island.
Monica A — Google review
According to the legend, local seamen found an icon of Madonna and child on a rock sticking out of the sea way back in the 15h century. Thinking it a miracle, they started to slowly bring rocks to create this artificial island upon which a Catholic church was eventually erected. Even today there is an event called фашинада/fašinada whereby locals bring more rocks to drop into the sea and, thus, expand the island further. A fascinated story, and indeed, the church and the island are undeniably beautiful, a true pearl of the sea so to say. However, lamentably, it is precisely this sublime beauty that attracts and uncomfortable amount of people to the island, which renders visiting this place a bit less pleasant than it would be otherwise. Also, to enter the church itself requires paying as well, which is not something I can subscribe to, but if you're willing, make sure to have some cash at the ready if you want to get inside.
Nikola R — Google review
It’s a nice little place. We went kayaking to the place and could leave it there safely. The church is a scam, you have to pay to enter a small church when most are already paying to come to the island by boat?… it’s a cute little place for some pictures, but you’ll have seen everything in about 5-10 minutes.
Thomas O — Google review
This place is a must-visit when you’re in Perast! Take the small boats to get there and don’t be tricked by the people at the parking entrance asking for €20 per person. The island is beautiful for photos and has a special sense of peace. I couldn’t leave without mentioning the photo of Mother Teresa, our great Albanian woman, above which visitors had left their rosaries 🙏
Xhulia P — Google review
Nice little island, €10 for a short boat ride over. It has some great views and a small museum, but don’t visit for too long.
Oscar S — Google review
The church sits on an artificial island created by bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and seized ships loaded with rocks. Renovated in 1722. There's an entrance fee and it can be quite crowded so you'll have to wait in line to enter. Don't forget to take a picture of the beautiful ceiling paintings.

Saint Nicholas’ Church is a Serbian Orthodox church in Kotor, built in 1909. It stands out with its twin domes and the Serbian flag displayed prominently. Unlike other Christian churches, it doesn't have pews and features an ornate iconostasis. Visitors can climb the bell tower for panoramic views of the city and the Bay of Kotor. The church also houses valuable religious artifacts and offers a mystical atmosphere with its impressive architecture.
This Serbian Orthodox church was completed in 1909. It replaced the previous church on this site which burnt down on Christmas Eve of 1896. There is a small stall on the left as you enter selling religious icons that are very well made and at a decent price.
Patrice O — Google review
St. Nicholas is a nice charming church of a solid looking structure on the outside and beautifully decorated on the inside, too. On the entrance, it felt like a souvenir shop than a church is my only complaint. There are some cute cats strolling around this church as well. Beautiful square and the incredible mountains all around.

St. Nicholas Church is one of the most important religious landmarks in Kotor, Montenegro. Located in the heart of the Old Town, this Serbian Orthodox church was built in 1909 and stands out with its impressive twin bell towers and striking black domes. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful frescoes, ornate chandeliers, and a stunning iconostasis. The church is a peaceful place to experience Kotor’s spiritual heritage and learn about its diverse cultural influences. Entry is free, but remember to dress respectfully. Visiting in the morning offers a quieter experience, allowing you to fully appreciate its serene atmosphere.

A suvenier shop and a church in the same room felt a luttle weird for me.. But the building is pretty from the inside and from the outside, and there are beautiful paintings on the walls.
Yonadav V — Google review
It is definitely worth visiting this over 100-year-old church, if only for its many icons (iconostasis).
Lucca T — Google review
Yep. I do not like this church. Although there is no entrance fee here, the biggest problem I see is they put the souvenir shop inside the church! Whatda? Being a church or so they call it Saint Nicholas' church, don't they read the bible? Please allow me to read that passage to refresh their mind, from the book of Matthew Chapter 21, verse 12 to 13 it says "And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called THE HOUSE OF PRAYER, but ye have made it a den of thieves". I think Jesus will definitely be disappointed with this church, and I also noticed that I see less of Jesus in this church and more of the saints. I hope by now, everyone should understand that no one is bigger than Jesus, and whatever happens Jesus loves you and with a love like that, you know you should be..... glad! Yeah (7x)

The Church of St. Nicholas in Kotor, Montenegro, stands as a striking Serbian Orthodox landmark in the heart of the Old Town. This church was rebuilt between 1902 and 1909 after a fire in 1896. Dedicated to the revered protector of sailors and travelers, this architectural gem blends Byzantine-Rashka influences with a great facade, ornate frescoes, and four massive canvases despicting the Gospel writers. It is a must-visit for those wandering the medieval streets.

Saint Luke’s Church, also known as Sveti Luka, is a significant landmark in Kotor's old town. Built during the reign of the Serbian dynasty Nemanjic at the end of the 12th century, it originally served as a Catholic temple before becoming an Orthodox church in 1657. This transition reflects the cultural and religious shifts within Kotor's history.
Visiting this Orthodox church in Kotor was a truly special experience. Nestled in the heart of the Old Town, the church exudes a sense of history and tranquility. The ancient stone walls, beautiful iconostasis, and flickering candlelight create a deeply spiritual atmosphere. What struck me the most was the feeling of positive energy inside. Whether you’re religious or simply appreciate history and architecture, this church offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets outside. The rich Orthodox traditions, stunning frescoes, and the warm welcome from the caretakers made my visit even more memorable.

Very small Orthodox Church next to the big one. This one also has an interesting history, just like many churches. Near the Kotor Cathedral. Very picturesque area.
Patrice O — Google review
• This church is one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in the region: constructed around 1195. • Architecturally, it blends Romanesque and Byzantine styles, making it interesting for those who appreciate historical church architecture. • It has a remarkable history of religious coexistence: originally built as a Catholic church, later shared by Orthodox and Catholic congregations (with two altars) before becoming fully Orthodox. • It survived major earthquakes (including 1979) largely intact, which is notable in a region with seismic risk. • Its location in the Old Town of Kotor (Trg Sv. Luke / Piazza Greca) makes it easy to visit while exploring the historic centre.
Amrit D — Google review
Saint Luke's Church in Kotor is a historically significant Orthodox church with these key points: * Ancient Origins: * Built in 1195. * Reflects a blend of Romanesque and Byzantine architectural styles. * Historical Significance: * Has a history of both Orthodox and Catholic use. * Holds important religious relics. * Architectural Features: * Contains well-preserved interior architecture. * Features notable iconostasis art. * Cultural Importance: * A key part of Kotor's cultural and historical heritage.

The Church of Saint Luke stands as a poignant testament to interfaith harmony and medieval resilience in Montenegro. Constructed in 1195 during the reign of Stefan Nemanja as a Catholic sanctuary blending Romanesque and Byzantine styles, this modest one-nave structure miraculously survived desvastating eartquakes, including the 1979 quake that ravaged nearby buildings. From 1657 to 1812, it uniquely housed dual altars for Catholic and Orthodox worship, a shared space born from wartime refuge, with services alternating between faiths. Today, it is a Serbian Orthodox church.

Palata Bizanti, formerly known as Beskuca's family home, has been owned by the Bizanti family for centuries. Situated near the main city square, it underwent reconstruction in the 17th century following an earthquake. Despite its size, the facade lacks elaborate stylistic embellishments except for the family coat of arms above the main entrance. It is not accessible to visitors.

The Church of Our Lady of Remedy, also known as the Church of Lady of Health, is a significant site in Kotor with a compelling history. It was constructed by sailors who survived a storm and attributed their survival to the intercession of the Virgin Mary. The church is part of Kotor's Old Town, which has been occupied by various civilizations throughout history. Visitors can explore sections of the old town wall, including bastions and towers that offer panoramic views.
Perfect view of Kotor. We arrived just in time for sunset and it was really beautiful. The climb up the stairs is a bit difficult but when you get to the top and see the whole bay, you relax.
Saar P — Google review
A great spot to see overview of Kotor. It had an entrance fee of 15 Euros which I think was overpriced. The church on top was closed and I think it does not operate anymore. There are a lot of ruins in the area and the climb to top was really hard and dangerous. The route lacks safety barriers that will prevent a person falling off the edge of the cliff. It lacked directional arrows also so most of the time you will get lost or wandering around due to multiple passages that will lead to a dead end or back from where you are. There is a stairway but it is too narrow as it can only fit 1 person at a time so you will end up climbing on the rocky paths if you meet someone opposite your way. I do not recommend this for old people specially when the sun is scorching hot. I did not see any comfort rooms also and that is maybe the reason why I can smell urine almost everywhere, people just have to relieve themselves on hidden areas due to the absence of comfort rooms. I hope they improve this place, for the price they charge for the entrance fee, they should start renovating the place by keeping it tidy and removing the vandalisms.

Great hike, worth going all the way to the fortress but this is a much shorter walk. It's free in the evenings after 8pm or €15 each in the day. Spectacular views.

One of the best viewpoints along the path to the top. A lot of travel magazines and websites use this view with church and trail to promote kotor. Really stunning views and if you are not going to the top definitely consider coming up to here.
Anthony C — Google review
What an amazing hike we did and had a rest in front of this church. It provided us a great shade and nice breeze coming from the bay. It was worth a climb. The gov’t should develop this site. Need more restrooms and resting areas so people can enjoy the hike and view more. Clean the areas where people relieved themselves as you can smell it from afar and it’s not very nice. You don’t want to be put of just because of this. Catch the people who do the vandalism and littering.

Church of Our Lady of Remedy – Kotor’s Sky-High Sanctuary Halfway up the 1,350-step fortress trail, the tiny 16th-century Church of Our Lady of Remedy clings to the cliff like a prayer carved in stone, its ochre bell tower rising solitary above a sea of cypress and golden fig. Built by grateful sailors who survived plague and storm, this humble chapel offers no grand nave—only a cool, shadowed interior where candlelight flickers on faded frescoes and the Virgin’s gentle gaze meets the breathless pilgrim. Step outside and the reward unfurls: Kotor’s red-tiled labyrinth spills beneath you, cradled by the fjord’s mirror-calm waters and the jagged embrace of Lovćen. At sunset, the sky ignites in rose and amber, and the church bell tolls once—soft, silver, eternal—reminding every heart below that grace is found in the climb. Bring water, wear good shoes, and let the view steal your breath twice.

How to Spend Time The St. Tryphon Cathedral, built in 1611, is in a lovely spot in Kotor that is likely to be noticed by tourists in the Old Town. The question is whether to spend the 2.50 Euros to go into it. We did. It's pretty, with lots of art and religious items in glass cases and on the wall. We were able to climb to the second floor and look out at the crowd from the balcony, but the towers were not accessible. Some other tourists had guides that seemed to be drawing out the experience with an abundance of details. It was a worthwhile half hour for us.

San Giovanni, also known as St. John, is a stunning medieval castle located on a picturesque hillside with sweeping views of the bay. The fortress hike is considered the top activity in Kotor, offering fantastic views of the Old Town and coastline while providing a glimpse into centuries of history. The fortress, built over 1,000 years beginning in the 9th century, showcases various civilizations and architectural styles.
I did this climb in April 2024. I started around 10:15 am. It was not too crowded on the way up, and it was cool when I started. The fee is now 15 Euros. The climb is steep and steady. There are stone stairs most of the way up. The view is worth the effort. Bring some water to begin, and there are a few vendors selling water about 2/3 up and also at the top. Climbing down, there were more people coming up, so will need to pass people on the stairs. In total, it took me around 3 hours, up, down, and exploring the fortress.
Lisa V — Google review
Took the free path which was even more comfortable than the 15€ stairs. Had to climb through a gap in the wall which was a lot of fun and not really that dangerous. Once we got to the top we had a beautiful view, the castle itself was a ruin ofcourse but still lovely and a bit maintained.
Yannick M — Google review
The hike is a bit tiring, especially in the sun, but the view from the top is really beautiful and totally worth it. You can see the whole bay and the rooftops of Kotor, it feels peaceful and magical up there. On the way up, there are old walls and little ruins that make it feel like you’re climbing through history. The path is mostly stone, so good shoes help. I’d recommend going early in the morning or before sunset when it’s not too hot. Don’t forget water!
Alisa M — Google review
The views from the top were absolutely stunning. The climb on the other hand is not for the faint of heart. It includes steep stairs, slippery stones, no railing and deep abysses. Truly an adventure but a bit risky too. Also a bit pricy with a fee of 15€ (July 2025), but I didn't regret it considering the view (Maybe the fee could be used for better upkeeping?!). Would do it again.

Entrance fee is €15 for the abandoned ruins. The view is not spectacular. You can see the old town of Kotor from here. It’s not worth going up to the fortress. The best view for taking pictures of Kotor is actually on the pathway after the Our Lady of Remedy church.

The Church of Saint Nicholas, also known as Crkva Svetog Nikole, is a Serbian Orthodox church located in Perast. Despite being built in the early 20th century, it boasts impressive decorations and two iconic onion domes. Inside, visitors can admire stunning frescoes and an intricately adorned iconostasis. For a small fee, you can ascend the bell tower for panoramic views of Perast and the bay.
The Church of St. Nicholas in Perast, Montenegro, is a prominent Roman Catholic church originally built in 1616, replacing an earlier church from 1564. It features a distinctive 55-meter-high bell tower constructed in 1691, which is a major landmark of Perast and offers panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor. In the 18th century, a larger church was constructed behind the original one, designed by Venetian architect Giuseppe Beati, but construction was never completed due to interruptions caused by the Napoleonic Wars. Today, the old and unfinished new churches form a single complex. The church is notable for its Baroque architecture with elements of Romanesque and Renaissance styles. Inside, it houses valuable paintings by local artist Tripo Kokolja and a treasury containing religious artifacts and vestments from the 16th and 17th centuries. Visitors can enter the main worship area for free or pay a small fee to access the domed central room and a museum collection of religious relics. The bell tower is also open for €1, providing stunning views of the surrounding area. Children are not allowed to go up. The Church of St. Nicholas serves not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Perast's historical wealth and cultural heritage, making it a must-see attraction in the town.

Violina P — Google review
The present church was built in 1616. Next to the church, in 1691, a handsome belfry was constructed by Ivan Skarpa. Built in the baroque period, it has elements of both Romanesque and Renaissance styles. The major bell was given as a present by the archbishops Andrija and Matija Zmajevic in 1713. Two smaller bells were added in 1797. The clock on the belfry was brought from Venice and installed in 1730.

Everything is quite nice, apart from the lady sitting at the museum entrance. She is exceptionally rude to everyone; to a couple who wanted to know about the bell tower, she told “I don’t know what you ask for, the bell tower doesn’t belong to me.” Upon asking about bell tower ourselves, “closed at 4, will you go in the museum?” And before even we got to answer, she continued “About to close it as well maybe you don’t have time.” Genuinely hope this young girl have the rest of her day go better as she was a menace to every visitor.

Kotor Old Town is a place that transports you to the Middle Ages with its well-preserved historical architecture and charming atmosphere. The area is filled with old buildings where you can sense the lived experiences of the past. When visiting Kotor, getting lost in its narrow alleys, admiring the design shops, small cafes, and churches is a must. The town offers a wonderful view and an opportunity to immerse yourself in its undeniable charm and rich history.
The Old Town of Kotor is an enchanting labyrinth of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery, nestled within the imposing medieval city walls that stand proudly against the rugged backdrop of Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a true gem of the Adriatic, offering visitors a rare blend of Venetian architecture, narrow winding streets, and a palpable sense of timelessness that transports you back centuries. Stepping through one of the fortified gates, you immediately find yourself immersed in a maze of cobblestone alleys, hidden piazzas, and charming stone buildings with red-tiled roofs, each telling stories of a rich past shaped by Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influences. The Old Town feels like a living museum where every corner is steeped in history and artistry. At the heart of the town lies St. Tryphon Cathedral, an exquisite Romanesque masterpiece dating back to the 12th century. Its twin bell towers and intricate facade command attention, while inside, the cathedral houses beautiful frescoes and relics that reveal the spiritual and artistic heritage of the region. Nearby, the Maritime Museum offers fascinating insight into Kotor’s seafaring legacy, showcasing ship models, navigational instruments, and historical artifacts that reflect the town’s vital role as a maritime hub over the centuries. What makes Kotor’s Old Town truly special is its harmonious blend of grandeur and intimacy. The main squares—such as Trg od Oružja (Arms Square) and Trg Sv. Luke—buzz with local life, filled with quaint cafés, artisan shops, and vibrant markets where you can sample regional delicacies or browse handcrafted souvenirs. Yet just a few steps away, the narrow backstreets offer peaceful solitude, shaded by ivy-draped walls and dotted with hidden courtyards and quiet churches. For photographers and travelers alike, the Old Town’s stone textures, colorful shutters, and dramatic light filtering through narrow passages provide endless inspiration. Climbing the ancient city walls to the fortress of San Giovanni rewards adventurers with panoramic views of the bay’s shimmering waters and the sprawling rooftops below—a breathtaking perspective that captures the full magic of Kotor. Unlike many tourist hotspots, Kotor’s Old Town manages to maintain an authentic and unpretentious atmosphere, where history lives alongside everyday life. In sum, Kotor’s Old Town is not just a destination but an experience—an evocative journey through time wrapped in stunning natural beauty, architectural splendor, and the warm hospitality of Montenegrin culture. It’s a place that stays with you long after you leave, inviting return visits to uncover even more of its treasures.

Kotor Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the Balkans. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Marco from "where_to_go_Montenegro" was absolutely fantastic! From the moment the tour started in Kotor’s Old Town, Marco brought the city’s rich history to life with stories, humour and local insight you just can’t get from a guidebook. He was friendly, professional and clearly passionate about his home — whether we were wandering the charming streets of Kotor, boating out to Our Lady of the Rocks, or exploring the beauty of Perast, Marco made every moment memorable. He also gave us great tips (including where to get the best gelato and local rakia 🥃), and knew all the best photo spots for those jaw-dropping views. Highly recommend booking a tour with Marco if you're visiting Montenegro — it’ll be a highlight of your trip!

St. Paul's Church in Old Town Kotor has a rich history, originally built as a Romanesque church and later reconstructed. The church features fragments of 15th-century frescoes and serves as a museum showcasing ancient artifacts found in the area. Visitors can explore digitally restored portraits of ancient people and learn about the Blessed Ossanna. The church also offers accessibility with a lift for disabled individuals.
A really interesting exhibition about work done to photograph and research the caves in the area around the bay by geographers in the early c.20. The colourised photos are especially lovely. The use of the old church is also a great touch. Maybe not worth the individual entrance cost, unless it’s especially in your field of interest, but the bundle ticket with the two other sites in Kotor and two others nearby along the bay (5 sites for 15€) made it reasonable to us!
Amy W — Google review
Nice church from the outside in a beautiful square overlooking the mountains but 5 Euros to see few things, not worth the toyrist trap admission price!!!
Buster I — Google review
Nice museum though a very small one. The exposition is basically the church itself, a lot of stones and some old building elements lying outside. Inside of the church you can see gypsum (?) copies of several pieces found in the tumulus like jewelry and a spear. You can also look at digitally restored portraits of ancient people whose remains were found on the tumulus. Good news are: for 5€ you get tickets for 3 places: this church + 2 more museums located also in the old town.
Oksana A — Google review
Its nice to stroll around if you are into history and museum. Dont expect an impressive and ancient church for this. Compared to other churches in Europe, this one is pretty so so.
Trang N — Google review
If you want to spend 5€ for 10 minutes of your time you could visit this place. I won’t reccomend it because there is very little to see and taking the price into account the value for money is horrible. Sometimes they think they could charge the tourists every price, they will still pay. It looked like museum from outside, the only thing you can see is the inside of the church. Totally not worth it. 0,50€ or maximum 1€ would be worth considering it.

Neat little church/museum with a bust of the Roman Emperor Domitian. Entrance fee gets you in a couple of other church/museums too.

Restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Dobrota, Kotor, Bastion 3 is a delightful dining spot that exudes an old-world charm. Known for its generous portions and excellent value, this restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring grilled chicken, burgers, pizza, and even French toast. Guests rave about the delicious meat platters and the inviting atmosphere created by shaded terraces adorned with grapevines. While some dishes may be on the tougher side, the friendly staff are eager to assist with recommendations.
Great restaurant where you can try local homemade food. The menu is diverse with vegetables, meat and fish dishes. They have a great patio/terrace perfect for the summer time. We ordered filled pepper, which was great with meat and rice, chicken skews and lamb stew with gnocchis, which had a great sauce with it. The portions are really big and the quality is great. Fantastic place if you want to move out from “touristic” mainstream places.

The food was delicious. The vegetables served were perfectly cooked - not mushy, yet melt in your mouth soft. The pork and cheese (karadjordjeva) was cooked at exactly the right temperature, and was the best I’ve ever eaten. You could hear and smell the grill will sitting on the terrace and eating. Service was friendly and prompt. You get the impression that you are eating in someone’s home. Much better prices than in the old town, which is 50m across the street. A must stop for lunch or dinner when visiting.

We have eaten a few meals at this place during our week stay here. Just outside the old town, the food is phenomenal! Absolutely mouth watering!! And really decent prices for its location.

We wanted to go somewhere outside of the old town and somewhere local. The food was nice, but very ordinary. The staff are okay. The atmosphere is full of locals and some tourists. Expect a large local groups. Drinks were fine. Actually, it wasn't cheaper than the restaurants in old town so Kotor is kind of pricy everywhere. Overall, it's fine to go and experience where locals go and eat.

I visited the restaurant for lunch. Service, quality of the food, everything was absolutely amazing. I had Lozova rakija (homemade), shopska, gorumet burger (gurmanska), beer and panckake for desert, with coffee(turkish) x2. Price and value for money, excellent. Will be coming here every time when I visit Kotor.

This place came recommended, the reviews all look good but we were disappointed. The food was very tasteless and the mixed grilled plate with different meats was unfortunately not good at all. The meats are either under or overcooked without seasoning. Service was missing some smiles and friendliness. I would not come back and would not recommend this place.

Very pleasant little monastery. Probably not our favourite in Montenegro, but defo worth a little diversion to it if you’re in the area. Lots of gold leaf, icons and candles as you’d expect. Peaceful grounds and a large cemetery over various levels. A nice viewpoint from up in the hill.

This is a beautiful place with commanding views across the bay. It's an easy walk up from the coast and worth the effort. The main chapel is undergoing a major restoration so access is not permitted but the doors were open allowing you to see in. There are great views of the church and the bay from the steeply tiered Graveyard. Glad we made the journey.

Absolutely stunning - we had a bit of a walk to the place from the winery but glad that we took the stairs down because like many Orthodox monasteries, this one is very well adorned. Additionally, they have a nice shop on-site with icons, wine, etc., so please do go and support them in that way. My quite a five star experience because the church was undergoing refurbishment and we could not do much but it is a very peaceful property and I was happy to see it.

The Podmaine Monastery, a 15th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery, is situated in a picturesque hillside location and boasts vibrant interior frescoes. Built by the Crnojevi noble family, it comprises two churches - a smaller one from the same period dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God and a larger one built in 1747 devoted to the Dormition of the Mother of God.
Great place to see some daily life of monks from Montenegro, there is free entrance and small but free parking in front of monastery. There is local shop with religious gifts and items as holy icons or books, bracelets, partying items that monks sell to visitors to have money for living. F For me it was something else- a small pause for relatively fast visit during Budva exploration, recommend for having fuller taste of Montenegro diversity.

A small market with vegetables & fruits & fish for the local people, and cheese & sausages for tourists. No street food. Markets can be a fun place for tourists like me, but this one was disappointing. However, if you are there, don't miss the opportunity to check if I am right. 🙂

Splendid collection of fresh fruit and vegetables.Price is reasonable. Situated atthe heart of oth old town near the entry gate.
Chitrita G — Google review
A 'farmer's market' right next to the town walls. Many of the sellers in the non-covered part offer their home-grown produce, others not, but shopping for eggs, fruit and veg here is certainly a more traditional and pleasant way than in the local supermarket! Some sellers even offer antiques and other such items for sale. The sellers at the back are of a more obvious commercial bent, though it is fun to sample their wares. We had so much local prosciutto, cheese, salami, olives and even some delicious raspberry wine, that we didn't need to eat lunch 'til an hour after we normally would! I recommend the lady seller with the glasses, the first lady from the left: she speaks some English, is very nice (gave our daughter a free wafer biscuit, and half an hour after our original visit helped my husband to look for my wedding ring after it'd slipped from my finger undetected!) and has excellent cheeses and fruit wines, while the lady next to her on the right also has great prosciutto - but it's up to you on the day, they'll all give you samples to try before you buy! The only thing to note is that none of the sellers have their prices on display (perhaps it's not a legal requirement in Montenegro?) so ask before you commit to buying, and, I'll have to admit, the prices are surprisingly high.

The Old Parish Church (Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is located in a picturesque area with sloped terraces showcasing traditional agricultural varieties. The church is connected to the Church of St. Anna and the church of St. Peter by a medieval path, offering a glimpse into the historical landscape. Surrounding the area are centuries-old oaks and pine forests, along with ancient family home foundations dating back to the Middle Ages.
Beautiful old church, unfortunately in pretty bad condition. Still, there is a lot to see here, and views from the balcony are great. Getting there could be tricky during the spring/summer season as the only way to the church is a hiking trail leading through bushes and rocks where you could possibly meet snakes, wasps or hornets. But with some basic caution it's perfectly doable. There's another much smaller church allong the way, also worth stopping by.

Good and relatively easy walking path, stone steps along all the path, nice views. Church territory is currently looked, but it’s possible to climb over

Amazing hike and view! The church was closed when we got there due to the bad constitution of the building. But anyways the walk and the view are stunning and only take about half an hour to get there from the Street. If you like there are alot of more scenic tracks around there!
Enno S — Google review
A beautiful place and quite an unexpected find. I suggest visiting the site in the evening, when there is less chance of encountering venomous snakes. The church used to be quite majestic, judging by its size, altar and the remnants of the wall paintings, but is now sadly in the state of complete disrepair. There are many engraved tombs of prominent families that used to live here and probably help build the church itself, but many have caved in, so walk carefully. All in all, a very interesting place to visit, it's like stepping onto a movie set.
Jagoda A — Google review
An old catholic church noticeable from the coastal road down in Prčanj. There are a couple paths you can use to reach it, all in decent condition and well marked. The main entrance gate is always locked but there is a hole in the wall that can be used to get in. According to inscriptions on some of the tombstones in front of the main altar (which are in latin), church probably dates back to 17th century, also probably serving as the original graveyard for wealthy seafaring families from Prčanj. Most of the building is in ruinous state, but the dome and clock tower still stand and the dome is really beautiful. There is still some blue colour remaining on its ceiling. All in all, an unexpectedly interesting find!

The Church of St. Leopold Mandić, originally dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, is a simple Roman Catholic church located in the old town near St. Jerome's Church. Constructed in 1688 after the Venetian occupation, it stands on the site of a former mosque. The unadorned exterior and interior reflect its humble nature. This church holds significance as it marks the beginning of St.
A lovely small church on a tiny little square. Worth a stop on the way down to the seaside road.
Károly P — Google review
One of the most beautiful catholic shrines in Herceg Novi, the church of St. Leopold Mandić is set in the center of the old town and architecturaly is a part of an old capuchins complex that contained a hospice, sanctuary and parish office. Built in 1688., owing to Girolamo Corner it administratively belonged to the Capuchin Province of Venice. In it's appearance, size and spatial organization it follows an old Capuchin tradition of building simple and small, one nave, single wing, modest churches on a rectangular ground plan. The arches are flanking from the main altar and connect the sanctuary with a small sacristy. Southern side of the church is dedicated to the Holy Mary, Mother of God with a small altar that is tastefully and beautifully arranged with many different of flowers depending on the time of the year. Behind the main altar, there is a picture that briefly summarizes the life of St. Leopold to whom the church is dedicated and which was born in Herceg Novi on the 12th of May 1866. He studied philosophy and theology in the friaries of Padua (Santa Croce) and Venice (Santissimo Redentore). On the 20th of September 1890. he was ordained as a priest in the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. He stayed in Padua for the rest of his life and despite his shy and modest personality, he became popular as a confessor and a spiritual guide devoted to his service to the people and ecumenism. He was designated as saint-confessors to inspire people to become reconciled with God and the Church by the confession of their sins. Famous for being a saint of reconciliation, healing and ecumenism, St. Leopold is also a patron saint for all those that are suffering from tumors. (Translated by Google) The small and very simple Roman Catholic church is dedicated to St. Leopold Mandić. It was built next to the city ramparts at the end of the 17th century, in the place where a mosque used to be. The exterior is very simple, without any architectural decorations. And the interior is very simple. St. Leopold Mandić was originally from Herceg Novi and lived in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The Orthodox Church of Црква Светог Николе is currently being constructed by an elderly woman who lost her husband, serving as a memorial to him. Located in a remote area with no direct access from sea level, visitors can only reach the church through hiking. The path leading up from Orahovac is fairly straightforward for experienced hikers and gradually ascends the hillside. The round trip takes approximately 3.5 hours.
We took the path up from Orahovac. It is quite straightforward for people who are used to hiking and gently snakes up the side of the hill. It took us 3.5 hours to go up and down. There is an abandoned house at the top from which you can look down on the church.

The Holy Trinity, also known as Sveta Trojica, is a significant church located in Grbalj. It stands on the Pelinska Rudina plateau and offers stunning views of neighboring villages. The present church was built in 1859 on the foundations of an ancient church from the IV century BC. Its exceptional position and size make it a dominant feature in this part of Grbalj. Visitors can also explore the nearby Church of St. Nicholas while enjoying the picturesque surroundings.
(Translated by Google) The village of Pelinovo. Church of the Holy Trinity / Sveta Trinity This is the largest church in Grbalj. It is located on the Pelinska Rudina plateau, from which the village of Pelinovo took its name. Due to its exceptional position and size, the temple dominates this part of Grbalj. From here there is a beautiful view of the neighboring villages, Prevlaka, Tivat and Bijela. Next to the Church of the Holy Trinity is the small, old Church of St. Nicholas. In his study “Churches in Grbalj” Mladen Crnogorčević noted that this church is the cathedral for Kneževina Tuiković, which in 1830 was named after the name of this church by the Austrian government Kneževina of the Holy Trinity. At the same time, other principalities in Grbali received their names from the churches of this area. Trinity Church was built on the basis of an older church, which was small and did not have a belfry. The ancient church was demolished in 1853, and the current one was built in 1859. The temple is decorated with pilasters. Large windows, through which a lot of light enters, are covered with iron bars. The altar rises three steps above the floor of the temple. The iconostasis, where you can highlight the icons of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God, was made by the artist N. Aspioti. As a cathedral church, Trinity Church had its own seal with the inscription: PECH. SOKO. CER. SVE. TRINITY HERBAL. In this church, on January 24, 1943, Metropolitan Hieromartyr Ioannikiy (Lipovac) of Montenegro-Litovsk blessed the Grblians to fight as part of the Yugoslav Army in the Fatherland of General D. Mikhailovich. Over the past few years, on July 17, the Divine Liturgy and memorial service for General Mikhailovich and the Grbljansky Chetniks have been served in the church. The church, unlike most churches in Grbali, did not suffer serious damage as a result of the 1979 earthquake. But it underwent restoration, which was completed in 2009.

Once the location of the Dominican monastery of St. Nikola, established around 1545, this square has witnessed significant transformations over centuries. After being abandoned by the late 18th century, it found new life when part of its space was repurposed for an Orthodox church during Napoleon's rule—a testament to Kotor's spirit of religious harmony.

The Saint John the Baptist church located in the Béguinage is a Roman Catholic parish built in the 17th century. The church was constructed in an Italian-Flemish Baroque style after the original Gothic structure was raided by Calvinists in 1579. The neighboring buildings of the beguinage were destroyed during the 19th century, leaving only this beautiful religious building standing.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist at the Béguinage is a 17th century church Quartiers des Quais district of Brussels. The church is built in the Baroque style and the facade of the church is one of the most elaborate and beautiful Baroque facades I’ve ever seen. On the day I visited, much of the interior was devoted to an exhibit on modern slavery and very enlightenting. Some of the stonework inside are exceptional especially on the capitals which are adorned with a mixture of floral themes and cherubs. The two stained glass windows are also amazing, one of which depicts Jesus symbolically handing over the keys of heaven to Saint Peter. The church has a masterpiece painting by Theodoor van Loon, “Saint Ursula crowned by baby Jesus”, which just amazing for combining seriousness and the playfulness of the cherubs. There’s also masterful sculptures of John the Baptist, Jesus and Mary, above the high altar which are worth checking out. Should be on any itinerary for Brussels.

Whilst plain from the outside the church contains five magnificent altars each surrounded by ornate stone carvings and containing a painting or crucifix. Above the Nave is a latticed wooden ceiling. Visiting here feels like an escape from the busy streets outside.

The church of St. Clare is part of an 18th century Franciscan monastery which was built on the site of an earlier Benedictine nunnery. Located near St. Nikola church . The inside is very pretty with some great paintings.

There is a very large terrace area, the church is closed to visitors on days other than worship. It is located right next to the road on the way from Kotor to Perast. There is also a parking area in front of it. A wonderful view awaits you on the sea side :)

Nestled in the charming northern part of Kotor's old town, the Church of St. Nicholas with its Franciscan monastery is a captivating destination that beautifully blends history and culture. Constructed between 1902 and 1909 on the remnants of an earlier structure lost to fire, this site offers visitors a glimpse into its rich past. The complex features not only stunning interiors but also houses a museum and library that delve deeper into local heritage.
(Translated by Google) Very beautiful complex, atmospheric. Museum, library, interiors, history. There is a handmade shop with cool, beautiful things, and a cafe with aromatic coffee and a bar. By the way, you can also try excellent homemade desserts there. And they periodically organize outdoor film screenings. Overall a super authentic place with a creative touch.

Nestled within a serene and picturesque park, the Српска православна црква Светог Петра и Павла is a stunning example of 17th-century architecture. Although currently undergoing repairs, this charming church invites visitors to admire its exterior and rich iconostasis from afar. The peaceful ambiance surrounding the church is complemented by a cozy city cemetery nearby, where local residents rest in tranquility.
I was amazed when i found bench with a small table on the left side of the bilding. The church was closed and was such a nice chill on that spot. Btw, the church is under protection of state of Montenegro as cultural heritage. Park in front of it fullfil experience of calming and meditative stay.

(Translated by Google) The Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul is located in the peaceful surroundings of a beautiful and pleasant park. It is a pleasure to look at its rich iconostasis and enjoy the peace and quiet that this temple offers. The inhabitants of Risno built a church there in 1601, which was rebuilt in 1796. The Italian architect Antonio Costa gave it its present appearance. The bells were made in Trieste in 1786, the iconostasis was brought from Russia in 1891, and the wooden gilded frames were made in Venice. If you are spending your summer in the Bay of Kotor, visit Risan and this beautiful church. Ako letujete u Boko-kotorskom zalivu obiđite Risan i ovu lepu crkvu.

(Translated by Google) The church is in an active phase of repair and reconstruction, so it was not possible to get inside. Located in the depths of a local shady park. Immediately behind the church there is a quiet and cozy city cemetery, where deceased local residents are buried, and family crypts are also prepared for future clients, which is the norm for both Serbia and Montenegro.
