Museo Civico Torre di Ligny is an archaeological museum housed in a 17th-century stone watchtower, offering stunning views and a collection of local artifacts. Located in Trapani, visitors can explore the nearby salt pans and historical center, including Piazza Garibaldi, the cathedral, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and the old fish market square.
When I went there the museum was closed. So I didn’t go inside. But I walked all around the structure and there was so much beauty to enjoy. There were rails all around so it was safe. There were steps to go down to the rocks but be careful! The waves were pretty big. I really enjoyed it.
Wendy L — Google review
It was a nice small museum. Not much artifacts, but there was a nice view from the rooftop :-)

The museum is very small and poor. The only thing that raised the rating was the terrace, where there was no one. If it wasn't for the terrace, then you definitely shouldn't go there. …

The Ligny Tower is part of the medieval city fortifications of the city of Trapani in Sicily, which is also the western tip of the city. These defensive structures included other towers, such as the two southern Torre Colombaia and Torre Nubia.

Beautiful building at the end of a lovely high street. We had ice creams and coffee in a nice cafe just outside. The buildings either side are quite high so it's pretty shaded but still warm. I would definitely recommend spending a few hours walking around this part of Trapani

Chiesa delle Anime Sante del Purgatorio, also known as the Church of the Purgatory, is a 17th-century church located in the historical center of Trapani. It is renowned for housing the twenty Misteri, which are invaluable sculptural groups carried around the city during the famous Procession of Misteri on Good Friday. The church showcases elegant yet not overly extravagant baroque architecture and attracts numerous visitors who come to admire these remarkable statues.
Very interesting exhibition of the wooden sculptures, that are used in religious processione during religious Catholic festivals around the year. Very interesting experience
Ihor Z — Google review
This is a beautiful church, please do not treat it as a museum but think about the Passion of Our Lord and what He had to suffer to give us the chance to get to heaven. There are all the stations of the cross made by artisans and you can see the clothes of the different characters of the Passion. A wonderful church to pray for the Holy souls in Purgatory.

You can’t go to TrapanI without visiting the Chiesa Delle Anime Sante Del Purgatorio. This church houses the 20 life-size statues used for the annual Good Friday procession in Trapani. This tradition began in the 16th century. Each statue sits on a platform carried by 22 men for 24 hours. A marching band accompanies them. Many people from the town follow the procession throughout the night, which covers the entire city. I was fortunate enough to experience this 15+ years ago. It is one of the most moving religious events I’ve ever attended.
Francine L — Google review
The church itself is not very particular. The statues however are impressive. They are so detailed and realistic. It was amazing, and I can really recommend going there. Also: It's free.

The Chiesa del Collegio dei Gesuiti is a magnificent religious building, although it may be difficult to gain entry as it is often closed. Visitors may have the opportunity to witness a wedding or other celebrations if they are fortunate enough to encounter an open day. (Translated by Google) Not far from the Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the Jesuit Church, the exterior seemed austere to me but once inside you are fascinated by the splendid Trapani baroque. The church is richly chiseled with bas-reliefs, capitals, statues all in one very white marble. Another aspect is the skilful use of mixed marbles with which many decorations were created. After admiring the Church and the altars, the visit ends with the richly carved wooden sacristy. Not to be missed. It is generally open until 7pm. Note that the designer is the same as the famous Casa Professa in Palermo.

Construction of the church began in the early 17th century. After the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1767, the church, still undergoing decoration, remained partially incomplete. The interior, which has three naves, is nonetheless richly decorated with stucco work by a student of Serpotta. It is well worth a visit. There is not much to expect other than its fascinating history, but otherwise don't spend a single euro visiting it because there is absolutely nothing to see other than these few photos that you have already looked at. Take a walk underneath and it's all over. Many Trapani enthusiasts will be able to tell you much more about history. The cathedral features a blend of Gothic and Baroque styles and houses many noteworthy examples of religious art and intricate sculptures. The cathedral of San Lorenzo is a pretty baroque cathedral in the center of the old city. As with many churches in this town, and in Italy, the church façade and gates are lining up flush with the residential buildings to the left and right. A stunning museum in such a beautiful environment, the ex-convent of the Carmelites, placed side by side to the Santuario dell'Annunziata (Sanctuary of our Lady of Annunciation) known also as Madonna di Trapani. The rich patrimonium of the museum is originated from 3 private collections (Fardella, Pepoli and Hernandez') . There are very important manufactures of the Malophoros shrine in Selinunte and other referring to the Phoenician culture coming from the escavation of Mothya, Birgi and Lilibeo. Incredible amphora with its lid and gymn scenes painted dated back to VI Century A. C. This is "black figures" whereas among those with red paintings the most relevant is the Crater decorated with a design of a Dionisiac dance. Important archeological finds coming from First Punic War are also present. The museum preserves also hundreds of pieces that testimony one of the most important activities of Trapani, the art of coral, know abd esteemed all over the world. Definitely a must stop museum.

Real Chiesa Madrice Insigne Collegiata, also known as Real Duomo di Erice, is a stunning church dating back to the 14th century. Built with stones from the ancient Temple of Venus, it boasts an impressive grand nave and houses wonderful icons. The church also features a small museum worth exploring on the left side of the altar.
Relatively small but very nice looking church. You can sit and stare at the ceiling for an hour easily.

The Torre di Re Federico is the bell tower of the adjacent Real Chiesa Madrice Insigne Collegiata or Real Duomo at Erice near Trapani, Italy. Both were built at the behest of Frederick III of Aragon in the 14th century Gothic style.

I think old churches like this are always worth a visit! They’ve been around for centuries and the architecture is always stunning. The ceiling here is very cool and the church has a small museum inside with old artefacts. It also has a separate bell tower you can visit for an extra fee but we didn’t do that because of the heat. Entrance to the church is 2,50€ and in my opinion that’s a fair price.
Hannah K — Google review
A fabulous surprise when you walk through the gothic entrance . Dates back to the Normans and before but the inside is a splendid 19th century refurbishment. Best get the 6 euro ticket that allows you into a series of interesting buildings, some with fabulous views. Lots of paid parking in Erice. Winding road is a fun challenge with numerous hairpins. Then on to the salt flats museum.

Worth a walk around but not the entry payment to go inside (at least not if you’re used to the more remarkable duomo’s of Rome, Firenze, Palermo etc). It’s lovely but it doesn’t deserve an entry pay.

(Translated by Google) An imposing church with richly decorated vaults. The coat of arms on the floor, commemorating Frederick III of Aragon, who commissioned its construction, seems to be inaccurate. The coat of arms itself says Frederick II. There is an entrance fee, like almost all churches in Erice. It's €2.50, well spent, although you can also buy discounted tickets, such as the Erice Card, which for €15 allows you to visit 15 of the most important sites. The Parrocchia di San Pietro is one of the oldest churches in the historic center of Trapani. It can be visited both in the morning and afternoon, hosting regular celebrations during the Holy Months. Inside, visitors can admire a remarkable organ that holds a special place among Europe's most significant ones due to its distinctive features. (Translated by Google) It is considered the oldest and largest church in Trapani, dating back to the early Christian era. It is said to have been built on a pre-existing pagan temple after the passage of the apostle St. Peter, engaged in his Christianization process. However, the building has undergone several changes following the alternating dominations: Norman, Aragonese, Bourbon, until the damage suffered by bombing during the Second World War and the damage sustained in the 1968 Belice earthquake. It remained closed for years, only to be reopened for worship in the 1990s. The interior is imposing, with five naves. Among other things, the organ is noteworthy, considered the second most impressive pipe organ in the world: it is said to be able to reproduce the sound effects of almost every musical instrument, including the human voice. L’interno è’ imponente, a cinque navate.

The Chiesa di San Liberale, located in Piazza San Liberale, is a Catholic church dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen. Built around 1600, this sacred place holds great devotion for the protection of fishermen embarking on their sea journeys. The church's restoration project aims to revive its ancient facade and restore its beauty to the city. It is hoped that this planned intervention will be completed swiftly, bringing back the splendor of this historic landmark to the community.
(Translated by Google) There is very little left of the church on the outside, even inside it is quite bare and almost always, if not always closed. Instead it is one of the oldest churches in Trapani and has always been at the center of ancient events. Just search on the internet but even by seeing its position it is easy to deduce its ancient and central role in the life of Trapani which revolved around coral fishing and its processing. It is a shame that for now it is so neglected both as a building and for its memories. The place is enchanting, we have a small beach nearby and other very beautiful spots where you can take magnificent baths in very clean water even though we are in the city center. Another characteristic is that given the shape of the coast here on one side or another there is always shelter from both the mistral and the sirocco.

From an architectural point of view, the church is poor in decorative elements, mainly in the facade, but the reading of the sources and signs of the building testifies to a very ambitious building program. A historical photo from the early 1900s portrays the original facade with a typically baroque character. Due to the bombings of the Second World War, the aggressive environment and human negligence, nothing remains. This is a 3-4 hour beautiful experience with many areas to visit in different spots but all in the same "village". You may pay €15/pp (discount prices for teens and free for kids). It's a hill, so expect a lot of walking from one site to another or you may use a car for the main paid sites and then park at a central area and walk the rest of the narrow roads. The people living and working here are very accommodating and friendly and the prices at the small restaurants/cafes are good. If you are into trekking, this can be a much more lengthier experience, and the scenery is rewarding.

(Translated by Google) The origins of Erice are inextricably linked to the sacred "themenos," the open-air sanctuary dedicated to the cult of the Greek Aphrodite and the Roman Venus Erycina. This place attracted people from all over the Mediterranean and, according to Diodorus Siculus, where Erice, son of Butes and Aphrodite herself, erected the temple dedicated to his mother and founded the city. In the "themenos," passing sailors united with the goddess through intercourse with the hierodulai, the temple priestesses, young prostitutes who dispensed sensuality and passion. The Castle of Venus was anciently connected to the so-called Balio Towers by a drawbridge, the same one mentioned by the Arab geographer Ibn-Jubayr (12th century). The Castle was home to the highest representatives of royal authority, including the Castellan, who administered criminal justice and whose main duties included managing the prison and maintaining the fortress, and the Bailo, who oversaw civil justice and tax payment. The area surrounding the Castle took the name "Balio" from the figure of the Bailo of the kingdom. What remains today of the ancient fortress was built by the Normans. Inside, architectural elements supporting the historical narrative have been discovered—and, sadly, lost. These elements essentially relate to the medieval reconstruction of the fortress, which also reused fragments of the ancient sanctuary, and to the rebuilding of the temple in Roman times.

Nestled along the historic Via Garibaldi, the Chiesa del Carminello, also known as San Giuseppe, invites visitors to explore its rich artistic heritage. This 18th-century Baroque church boasts a stunning marble portal adorned with four elegantly twisted columns that gracefully rise towards a subtly detailed tympanum. Inside, you'll find captivating artworks including a poignant painting of Saint Joseph's death by Giuseppe Errante and exquisite wooden sculptures.
(Translated by Google) The ancient street which corresponds to today's Via Garibaldi must be walked slowly as it is a continuous hotbed of artistic discoveries such as the portal which adorns the façade of the church of San Giuseppe. The four twisted columns that embellish the access portal with a round arch become smooth as they rise upwards. The tympanum is barely visible, enriched by concentric lateral volutes that innervate a window constituting an upper order ending in a broken tympanum. The eighteenth-century baroque interior can only be imagined by the traveler since the church was closed to passage. Since Sant'Agostino is closed, the traveler can only contemplate the construction design of the external facade. (Translated by Google) On a morning with inclement weather, the traveler, finding himself walking along Via Garibaldi, mentioned a brief stop to admire the splendid eighteenth-century façade of Santa Maria dell'Itria known in Trapani as Santa Rita. The two orders into which the external façade is divided are both embellished with six Corinthian style columns which give majesty to the architectural structure. The lower order houses a splendid bronze portal, divided into thirty-six panels, some of which are decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the greatest sacred figures and doctors of the church and prophets, others with religious mottos. In the upper part of both orders, the architect Castro wanted to insert marble roundels and coats of arms to represent the religious sense of the building. Unfortunately, the interior could not be visited, since the church was not open when the traveler passed by.
