1Stari Grad

Mentioned on

Stari Grad, located on the northern side of Hvar Island in Croatia, is one of Europe's oldest towns. Its prime position at the end of a protected bay and adjacent to fertile land has attracted settlers for centuries. The town offers a unique culinary experience at Poje, a family field nestled in the UNESCO-protected Stari Grad Plain.

The Stari Grad Plain is an ancient Greek agricultural plain dating back to the 4th century BCE. It is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site known for its preserved walls and crops, reflecting the Greek system of land division. This cultural landscape has been continuously cultivated for over 24 centuries and remains a natural reserve since its colonization by the Ionian Greeks. Visitors can explore the area, bike through the plains, and experience local culture and cuisine.
A landscape full of history… beautiful vibes here… and the ancient town picturesque and a cosy atmosphere
Friederike H — Google review
This is UNESCO World heritage protected site as one of the rare examples of intact agricultural landscape made by Greek colonists when they took this beautiful bay from local population and leaving to them rest of island apparently. I would like more investment (EU funds of course) but even like this is it perfect place for bike or walking tour. You can reach it from Stari Grad and it stretches almost to neighboring beautiful small towns of Jelsa and Vrboska. In spring you can find delicious asparagus here in great quantity. And try to avoid high summer as it can be really hot here if you are not near sea. Fifth star is missing as it should be maintained much better but this is place to see when visiting amazing island of Hvar as it is unique place indeed.
Tonko L — Google review
E-biking through this beautiful plain was one of my favorite activities in Stari Grad! If you visit in the summer, particularly a hot day, I'd recommend exploring the trails this way. We rented e-bikes from Hvar Life and it was just a short trip down some quiet roads to get to the landscape from there. There's many paths to explore, but if you get hungry Hora Hvar is nearby for you to enjoy some farm-to-table food.

Public beach
Plaža Malo Zaraće is a renowned beach on the island of Hvar, known for its picturesque and Instagram-worthy setting. The beach features breathtaking rock formations and stunning turquoise blue waters. Situated in the village of Zarace, it is nestled below impressive cliffs, offering a unique Adriatic experience. Accessible by boat or car, this beach provides an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoying the clear blue waters.
One of those spots that we always return to. The natural shade of pine trees with fish swimming around you and clear sea. In the immediate vicinity is the Veliko Zaraće bay with a slightly different, beautiful ambience with the service of the Gega tavern for those who want to have lunch on the beach.
Jo_vana — Google review
The beach itself is beautiful at first glance, but there are a few downsides worth noting. Just a few meters from the shore, there’s a thick line of seaweed that makes swimming less enjoyable. The space to lay down towels is quite limited.
Aleksandar I — Google review
Sea crystal clean and a beach that has shade and sun (at least around noon). Not too much parking spaces close by, and a lot of uphill/downhill driving to the beach, but the road is asphalt and okay.
Marko D — Google review
Perfect clear water, easy access with car and enough parking - perfect for people who want to escape the crowds. Need to come prepared with food, drinks, towels, etc, as there are no bars.
Camila G — Google review
One of the nicest beaches in Hvar with a lot of natural shade. Loved it. The only thing is that it can be hard to find parking close if the one next to the beach is full so go earlier to get your spot.
Natasa M — Google review
The place was stunning, crystal clear water no doubt about it, easy access (compared to many other beaches we went by cars. There're free and paid parking (imited spaces), We were lucky someone was leaving, so we've found a free parking 😁. No bars though, we brought our lunch and drinks with us. More sunny spaces in the afternoon. Love it.
Phanida S — Google review
A very small, quiet beach with crystal clear water. The shoreline is rocky, and getting into the sea can be tricky because of the stones, but if you enjoy peaceful and clean spots, this place is ideal. The sunsets here are stunning. Access from the main road is simple, with a narrow asphalt road leading down to the beach. Just keep in mind that parking is limited and can be a headache to find. Now, the ugly part: one family showed up with two big dogs, and one of them straight up took a shit in the water. Nothing ruins a crystalclear beach vibe faster than swimming next to floating dog crap. I like dogs, but not when I’m sharing the sea with their toilet. No idea if it’s officially allowed, but clearly no one cares. Be ready either to shut up and deal with it or pick a fight.
Dan M — Google review

The Harbour of Hvar is a picturesque location surrounded by charming Venetian architecture and a pedestrian zone, creating a relaxing atmosphere. With around 100 meters of moorings, it can accommodate approximately 20 yachts. The area boasts sleek super yachts alongside wooden fishing boats, exuding an air of luxury akin to St Tropez.
A scenic harbour on the island of Hvar which can be accessed from Split harbour by fast catamaran ferry. The harbour area offers many scenic spots which can be reached by walking along the seaside promenade. An opera house, big courtyard for open air shows, a cathedral and a monastery, a park, lovely beaches, restaurants and assorted shops line the harbour. It is a very lively place during summer with more than 30,000 tourists visiting the island daily. The imposing fortress on the hill top makes for a very imposing background to the harbour makes this place an ideal island to visit for a day trip from Split
Subir D — Google review
Hvar is a small place and harbor is the most prominent place here. All the ferries arrive and depart from here. Within 500 meters of Harbor you would find 90% of bars and restaurants. For all the surrounding islands this is the starting point. Even if you sit there and people watch you can spend an entire day. It looks more beautiful in the night when you see all luxury yachts parked.
Balkrishna S — Google review
Great little harbor for tourism. It's a small seaside old town that you can walk through in two hours. Lots of restaurants and shops, and a fortress on top with amazing views. For the best restaurants, pastries and coffee go one out two blocks away from the main drag. This place gets busy in the Summer, especially on weekends, and has a spring break feel.
Minh H — Google review
Nice waterfront walk harbor/Marina. Very touristic environment, since it is a great summer getaway. You have many Restaurants and shops in the surrounding areas. The Harbor is part of the whole waterfront walk, which is lovely. You can also check the fort on the top of the hill and see the Marina from above. The water and the scenery here, are wallpaper material. The color of the water is just amazing and if you are a relaxed person, just sit on a bench somewhere and enjoy the environment and its vibes.
Joshua L — Google review
Hvar is a very quaint town with some old buildings and lots of places to eat, drink or grab a coffee. I loved walking around and enjoying the ambience. The harbour and buildings make a pretty picture. Don't miss going up to the fort for spectacular views of the harbour
Bharathi M — Google review
Stunning little harbour. We used the krilojet from mainland and was comfortable and even had cell charger ports on board; bonus! Hvar was a awesome day visit despite being crowded with tourists . Very expensive to eat so I bought bread and snacks with me to the island to avoid overspending.
Thomas C — Google review
I was Walking around the harbour I have found it beautiful since the colour of the Dalmatian sea is crystal light blue, you have so many yachts and boats coming into that is very distracting. There are many shops and restaurants along the sea front ideal to seat enjoy a good glass of wine. Highly recommended to visit this island one if the main ones in Croatia
Ljubica B — Google review
A beautiful place in and around. Lots of restaurants and things to do around here. Try to climb up to the Fort as well while you are there. The views up from there are amazing.

Pokonji Dol Beach is a dreamy spot just a 25-minute stroll from Hvar town. It offers natural beauty and tranquility, making it a favorite gathering place for both locals and tourists. The idyllic bay, surrounded by teal waters, provides the perfect setting for relaxation. With sun loungers, palm trees, and refreshing drinks available, visitors can enjoy a leisurely day on the largest pebble beach on the island of Hvar.
That’s beautiful beach , close to the town , there are 2 ways from city to walk there or from the hill , Very beautiful clear , clean pebble beach 🏖️ early morning until 9 am beach still peaceful after that a lot of ppl there , so if you lucky you can get some spot for sun baht .
Manita B — Google review
When we visited, most places nearby were still closed—which actually made the experience better. The beach was quiet, peaceful, and far less crowded than usual. We were among just a few people there, which made it feel like a hidden gem. The water was clear and clean, perfect for a swim. Just a heads-up—it’s a pebble beach, so beach shoes or sandals definitely help. Easily one of the better beaches in Hvar.
Prateek Z — Google review
We didn’t even try to go to the beach, it was clear from afar that it was crowded. But there were some sunbeds on the rocks that you could rent for €40 for the whole day (two sunbeds and an umbrella). I highly recommend it. The water was very clean, and there were stairs nearby to get down and swim. There were also spots where you could jump into the water from a height. On top of that, the guy in charge of the sunbeds was very friendly to us. If you come to this beach, I recommend staying in the sunbed area. It’s worth paying for. The place is beautiful.
Marta A — Google review
The beach itself is beautiful, with very clear water and no visible dirt. Just keep in mind that it’s all pebbles, so a thick base under your towel and an umbrella are a must, as there’s no natural shade. The downside is the rental prices – €20 for a sunbed and €10 for an umbrella is pretty unreasonable, especially since rentals only start from 10:00. For those who prefer to come early in the morning (like 7:00–12:00), paying €50 for just a couple of hours feels insane. Another minus is that the umbrellas don’t include a small table or hooks for clothes. I would still recommend the beach, but definitely bring your own gear for comfort and health.
Yanina V — Google review
Nice beach to swim and to enjoy the sun. The bedsuns have to be paid by cash. The restaurant has an ATM with 5.8% commission..
Thibault D — Google review
The cala is the bluest water I’ve seen. Not do crowded. It has a bathroom for 1 euro and a nearby restaurant. It has a short hike down on a rocky road. We loved it!
John P — Google review
A beautiful natural cove beach excellent for swimming! We brought our own goggles so we could lap the designated swim area. You could snorkel but there isn’t much to see, watch out for sea urchins! There is a bar and restaurant available but seemed very overpriced. Instead we stopped at some markets in town and brought our own food and drinks. You are able to drive or taxi from the town, taxi men wait at the lot to take you back. But we just walked the short but steep path down from the town. Went on a Friday afternoon and yes it was crowded in the main beach area, but there are places in the trees on the west side that had more space and provided sun protection. Could have spent the whole day here! Was a wonderful time, hope to return one day.
Martin D — Google review
Super beautiful beach. We loved it. A must if you’re on Hvar

Plaža Dubovica is a hidden gem located just a short drive from Hvar town. It's nestled in a picturesque cove with clear waters and white pebbles, surrounded by old stone houses and olive groves. The beach offers amenities such as a snack bar, toilets, and natural shade while still preserving its secluded and wild atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy casual beachfront dining at the bar with refreshing cocktails available.
One of the best beach in Croatia. It is small but beautiful and quiet. A few places under the trees to protect from the sun. You have to arrive early to get a place to park your car on the road. There are a few spots in 2 different places. You have to hike about 10 min to go to the beach, the return is uphill...
Michael B — Google review
Dubovica is a gem! There are some parking spots beside the road, but not enough. They are on the sun as well… It takes cca 15 min by foot after that on a rocky road to get there, but it is worth it. Small/medium pebbles, some shade, clear water, two restaurants and one cafe in an ild stone house a bit pricier side, but hey, you will enjoy them :)
Dule V — Google review
A beautiful little beach in nature. The color of the sea is incredible. The water is crystal clear. A pair of trees can provide shade for those who need shade. There is a cafe/restaurant located on the beach. The only drawback, which may not suit someone, is that the beach is rocky. So, whoever is not a favorite of it, it will not suit him.
Aleksandra N — Google review
There is no private parking, we parked by the road, from here it's a 5 minute walk down - unfortunately it's 15 minutes up, but worth it. Down below is a perfect cove, clear water, two small, family run restaurants, one with bar service so we don't die of hunger and thirst. There are no beds for hire, but the pebbles are smaller and round, so you can sunbathe comfortably on a plain towel. No mobile network, the perfect place if you REALLY want to escape... (You can pay by card in the restaurant and bar.) Perfect peace and sweet escape❤️
Zsófia P — Google review
Probably the best beach in Hvar, bring shoes to trek up and down the path you will have to trek in order to get to the beach itself. Don’t be that guy wearing sandals because it’s just that much easier to slap a pair of sandals on. You will thank me later. The beach is very private and quaint despite the trek it is a wonderful beach and my personal favorite in all of Europe. Furthermore, like most beaches in Croatia, it is rock not sand you will be laying on.
Tyler M — Google review
Nice beach. A little bit hard to go down to the beach and get back up, but if you come with a boat it's great. There are two small restaurants and one bar. No trees no shade. Pretty big for the beaches of Hvar. Not great for kids.
Ina B — Google review
Truly stunning. Do some research on the history of the buildings before you go! The church is nearly 400 years old!
Lolly L — Google review
Very beautiful beach and landscape! To go there you have to go down for around 10 minutes, but totally worth it! There is also a coffee/restaurant and a bar next to the beach if you need something to eat or drink

Napoleon Fortress, located in the village of Zastraz sce on Hvar Island, offers a stunning panoramic view of Hvar town and the Pakleni Islands. The ancient Illyrian fort atop Vela Glava hill served as a defender against invaders. Visitors can reach the fortress via a well-marked trail or by car, although the narrow and twisty road requires caution.
Amazing view over Hvar and the surrounding area. You can get there by car, but the road is narrow so you need to drive carefully

Incredible view! About 30 min trek through some pretty rocky paths but they are marked out. Alternative is take the road. I ran up the hiking track and came down the road way. Well worth it. Go early I went at 7am and there was just me and the grounds keeper 😁
Stevie-Ann D — Google review
Perfect for a good hike!! The views are incredible, you can see the coastline with a few islands as well. Not much amenities available on top, so need to come prepared. Do the hike instead of coming by road!
Aishwarya R — Google review
Went there 20 minutes before sundown with a taxi. You can also hike up. Absolutely beautiful 🤩 Better than the Fortica Fortress because you see all the islands around Hvar. Only two benches so it’s good to bring a towel to sit down on. The fort is closed so nothing to see apart from the amazing view. Not busy at all.
Luisa R — Google review
If you don’t mind a 20 minute hike that’s entirely uphill it’s stunning. I did it in flip flops but would recommend sneakers. Great view of Hvar. Didn’t actually go in the castle (not even sure you can), it’s more for the view.
Maddy A — Google review
A stunning sunset lights up the sky. The fort's closed, but most come for the sunset anyway.

Nice small marina nearby Island and City Hvar. In the Marina there are all necessary things for Sailing Yachts, Price is ok. You can also go hing in the Island and visit the other bays but use good shoes.
Christian P — Google review
The marina is very well located in a natural harbor with a very nice landscape surrounding. We went there for a quick stop to refill water and had a very disappointing experience with the marina. The person attending was very unfriendly. Prices are beyond. The water refill was 250kn and a six pack of drinking water costs you 10€.

Our favourite of the Paklinski Islands. If you have the energy, worth doing the trek across the islands for some of the best views in Croatia. You might even bump into a wild peacock ..
Elliot A — Google review
The place itself is very beautiful. Showers and toilets are reasonable. Marina has two very small shops. The person accepting the yacht didn't actually speak much English. There were a couple of loud yachts staying up rather late in the night.

It was lovely cool evening when we start our walk around the Ferry Port. We slowly wondered up the hill and to our surprise, found the interesting Fort Forteca on top of the hill which was unexpected and a great bonus. The view of the Hvar harbour was magnificent and beautiful. We took many lovely photos to share here.

The start to the Fortica fort is pretty simple - it's pretty much dirt and gravel all the way up; it's not a difficult hike, may take 10-15min depending how fast you walk and if you look out at the lookout points. Entry is free up the mountain, but the Fort is paid.

Trailhead - Napoleon Fortress is a popular hiking trail in Hvar that leads to the historic fortress built in 1812. The trail, mostly covered in stone, offers beautiful views of Hvar and Fortica fortress as it winds through the woods. It takes about 25-30 minutes to reach the top, with some uphill sections but manageable for hikers. The path is well-marked and not too difficult to follow.
We were planning on walking up to it but being it was my first time in the area and the sun baking my skin as well as not having enough water, we decided to take a taxi up to the fortress. It was closed to visitors when we were there, last week of May. But the views are breathtaking.
Dan B — Google review
Worth the hike up the hill for the views. The fortress is not open for tourists but you can walk the perimeter of the walls. The trail is well defined and marked, but I'd recommend trainers as it's rough terrain. Just a bit of a faff getting from Hvar town to the start of the trail as no footpaths on the roads.
Darren S — Google review
Great hike with easy to follow trail. Pretty uphill but the view is worth it! Took me 30 mins to get to the top from the town square at a solid pace with a few stops for photos. First part has some shade, but definitely got a bit sweaty in the full sun near the top. Best to do it early in the day.
Liam D — Google review
Trail is well laid out and signed, it is more of a hike than a walk take some appropriate shoes. The top is a great spot for sunset (give yourself 25-35 minutes to get to the top from the start of the trail so you don't miss the sunset)
Aaron G — Google review
Took the Ferry from Split to Hvar, beautiful town....we decided to take the walk up to the Fortress, not too difficult but superb views once inside the Fortress walls, there's a small fee to get inside but it's well worth it. There's a cafe+ toilets there also.

Road to fortress Is mostly covered in stone. If you take this road you will go through the woods and you will have a lot of beautiful views on Hvar and Fortica fortress. I highly recommend to take this road instead of continuing to follow road for cars. Its short road (25-30) mins walking and it Is not hard to achieve. Its very nicely marked so you will not get lost. Yet its more like hiking than just casually walking.

It's a normal hiking trail, so expect somewhat rocky terrain, no flip-flops, wear normal shoes, sneakers will be fine :) you can easily reach the top in 30 minutes, but make sure to bring plenty of water and go early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Heat stroke is not a joke.
Orsi N — Google review
Marked hiking trail easy to medium complexity. Views on the way and on top are amazing

(Translated by Google) I highly recommend it. It is worth appreciating the enormous effort that has been put into this place - just look behind the wall to see that this garden is not simply a piece of local nature separated from the surroundings, but the result of hard work. Plants are wonderful and even more interesting stories about them, if the local shop is not crowded (great figs and brilliant spices, and of course olive oil, wine, etc.), you can talk about the "contents" of the garden with the people who take care of it. Admission is free, but you can put a certain amount into the box - we did and received fragrant lavender bags. There is also a nice place for a picnic in the garden. (Original) Bardzo polecam.

(Translated by Google) I recommend it, I personally know that the owner of the botanical garden is a great lover and he arranged the garden with great enthusiasm. (Original) Preporučam, osobno znam da je vlasnik botaničkog vrta veliki zaljubljenik i uredio je vrt sa velikim entuzijazmom.

Public beach
Beach Robinson is a secluded bay near Hvar town, accessible by a 45-minute trek along the sea. The beach, named for its lack of electricity and water, offers a tranquil escape favored by sailboats. Visitors can place their food orders with Domagoj, the owner who also serves as chef and waiter. The pristine waters and bleached white stones make for an idyllic swimming spot. A thatched roof provides shade for lunch and drinks when called by Domagoj.
You can water-taxi for 10€ pp return. Or car-taxi 20€ to the closest beach and then you have to walk 20min. The walk needs good shoes - its all rocks, manageable but rugged. Small but super lush . HIGHLY RECOMMEND rock swimming shoes. The stones are really hard to get out especially with the swell

If you’re in Hvar, it’s totally worth taking one of the little boats at the port (about €10). They’ll drop you off at different beaches, and one of the best is Robinson Beach. There you’ll find Robinson’s restaurant — super simple, familiar, and absolutely delicious. Everything is grilled right on the spot, from fish to squid… fresh, smoky, and unforgettable. Such a great experience!

Beautiful beach, one of the hidden gems of Hvar. It is 15 minutes walk from Pokonji dol, through the woods and over the rocks, but it is really nice place to visit. There is a bar, they rent sunbeds for 8-10 EUR, which is not too expensive for Hvar. Beach is rocky, with beautiful water.

Good small beach, not too crowded, good slightly rocky walk from Hvar town.

Our number one beach at Hvar. We have tried 7 different. A 40 minutes nice walk, and we took the Robinson taxi boat back. You can take the boat both ways for 10 euro from Hvar harbour. Recommend the beach. Best at Hvar.

An early morning 20/25-minute walk through a beautiful forrest from the very center of the Hvar town, with beautiful landscapes that follow the entire length of the promenade, are reason enough to visit this small, but one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. The sea is crystal clear and amazingly transparent. If you stay for a majority of the day, there is a family owned, charming restaurant in the shade of the trees, on the very edge of the small cliff with an excellent offer of various dishes, of which I highlight freshly caught fish prepared on the grill and variety of seafood. Definitely a place to spend a relaxing day.

This beach was amazing 🏝️ We walked from Hvar town approx 30 mins, there is another beach at the half way point so can stop for a bonus swim on way there or back. The walk is mostly though Forrest with sea views at the same time so perfect for a very hot day like when we visited, The water was very clear and swimming conditions are perfect. Get there early to have the beach to yourself. There was a beach bar that we didn’t try but looked great 👍🏼

Small & quiet beach reachable either on foot (~1h from Hvar town) or by taxi-boat from the Hvar pier (10€ p/p). In August 2024 prices for the sunbeds is 15€. There is a beach bar serving food and drinks, and with toilet. Snorkelling is great!
