Fine dining restaurant
Latin American restaurant
Nestled in the heart of La Fortuna de San Carlos, Don Rufino is a culinary gem that beautifully marries contemporary cuisine with local flavors. This restaurant stands out for its commitment to fine dining, making it an ideal spot for special occasions or simply indulging in exquisite dishes paired with exceptional wines. The ambiance is warm and inviting, perfect for those looking to enjoy a memorable meal while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Costa Rica.
Don Rufino was recommended to our group by our Airbnb host, and it was a perfect dinner. The staff was very friendly and efficient. And the food was top notch, especially for a small tourist town of La Fortuna. We tried a number of dishes, including bouillabaisse, bone marrow, potato croquettes as starters to sea bass, rib eye, grandma’s chicken, and grilled octopus for the main courses. There was not a bad dish on the table. A must visit for a great dinner in Arenal.

Excellent restaurant! We made a reservation for 5:30pm which was perfect because we got to step out and see the sunset at 6pm (see photo below with a clear view of the volcano)! The drinks were delicious! We ordered the Moroccan Salad (fantastic, flavorful, perfect portion for sharing between two people), the kabocha squash risotto with shrimp (tasty, a little too heavy for my liking but the flavors were solid! Too much food for one person), and the mushroom lasagna with squash (excellent choice for a vegetarian, flavorful, well constructed - didn’t fall apart, filling). Quite pricey for what you get but if you’re willing to spend a little extra, it’s a good experience!
Brenisen W — Google review
Had an amazing birthday dinner here. We ordered the tasting menu, the staff provided phenomenal service and every dish wowed us! So much flavor in every bite. I had the standard wine pairing and it was 100% the right choice. The staff truly made our time here exceptional. Come see for yourself!
Jasmine K — Google review
wow! this place caught us by surprise! We arrived at 8:30 pm , the place was packed, we ordered two cocktails, Campari based to get us started. We started with the potato crocant with home made smoked trout dip on top and fish ceviche with avocado ,ginger and chilli souse, both dishes were excellent But the USA American ribeye was out of this world , and I don't give those reviews light headed , it was really really good
Gai H — Google review
The best way to celebrate my 40th birthday dinner! Delicious food and wonderful service. The fried shrimp furikake, the tenderloin & and the Almond Financier were the highlights of this dinner - simply amazing. Best restaurant so far in Costa Rica. Thank you to the staff for a wonderful evening. Special thanks to Raul, Jose and the lovely lady bartender (didn't catch her name)! 🥳🤙🏼
Lyla R — Google review
We stopped in for a late lunch and were impressed with the service, atmosphere, and of course the food. We had the grilled merguez lamb sausage, Chifrijo, and Rigatoni, with the coconut de leche for dessert. I wish I could eat here all the time.
Ian F — Google review
My husband and I both agree that we had the best meals during our week long stay in La Fortuna at Don Rufino! We were absolutely floored that we both ate for under $30 USD and had some left overs as well. The atmosphere and service was equally amazing. Some menu options are more expensive, but don’t worry if you don’t want to spend much because the lower price options blew our socks off. I had the Grilled beef sirloin, and he had the Costa Rican Casado from the lunch menu shown. 1000% recommended, we will go back on our return trip later this year
Lucky B — Google review
Another Costa Rican restaurant with amazing food. This is definitely a higher end restaurant with great presentation and nice touches like cloth napkins and great presentation. The prices reflect the extra service and effort. I wish I knew how to make my cocktail. It was spectacular. We were all glad we tried the Ceviche at Don Rufino. It has a spice kick and some unique flavors. However, we all agreed that we liked one we had at another restaurant in town better. The flavor of Grandma’s Style Chicken was unique and delicious. It was moist but perhaps a little overcooked? The texture was a touch chewy. Bottom line for me, if I was a local, I would occasionally go here for a nice date night, but with so many other great food options in town for less money, I’d probably not go often.

Park
Parque de La Fortuna is a vibrant and bustling town in Costa Rica, offering a peaceful and quaint atmosphere. The park at the center of town provides a lovely place to relax, with benches, shade, and picturesque views of the Arenal Volcano.
So cute! They have this incredible tree in the park, a fun and very photogenic wooden swing, volcano views on clear days, and just overall, it's a lovely place to sit and relax a spell. It's right in the middle of town, so it's easy to visit while exploring!
Jada K — Google review
Beautiful garden and visiting historical church gives you holy inspiration. You can see national tree of Costa Rica.
Gene K — Google review
Excellent option to park in La Fortuna. It is located near the park and the church in the middle of town. Plenty of spaces to park and it is extremely affordable. Very secure and reliable. Parking is pretty much automatic if you pay with a credit card. But there is also stop on site if you need to pay cash. By the time I parked in September 2025, the rate was approximately 790 colones an hour. I felt extremely safe, leaving my car here.

The center of La Furtuna. Everyone has to get their pictures there. Immaculate gardens and paths. Constantly patrolled by security.

La Fortuna is very peaceful and quaint. It’s a very beautiful, vibrant bustling town. There are many shops and restaurants and a lovely center garden park. There are many places to shop. It was nice to just sit on the benches around the fountain and people watch. We stopped there after a boat tour of the Arenal Lake. The lake gives you a closer view of the volcano and coastline wildlife. The water is a beautiful emerald green color. The views are spectacular. The lake is gorgeous.

El Salto, a popular spot among locals, offers a thrilling experience with its rope swing over the refreshing La Fortuna river. Visitors can enjoy swimming and bathing in the beautiful river, or take the daredevil plunge from the swing into the water. The area also features small waterfalls and swimming holes for those seeking a more relaxed experience. While parking options are available nearby, many choose to park at a roadside soda for convenience.
This is one of the best free activities in La Fortuna. Most people leave their cars by the road, but there's a public parking lot for just $2 (1000 colones), and they have showers and restrooms.
Isabel C — Google review
Free local watering hole. We showed up and parking was plentiful by the bridge. Guy was asking for $4 to watch our vehicle. Fun spot and worth doing the swing if in the area after the waterfall.
Preston H — Google review
My wife and I went twice while on our honeymoon because it was so fun. The first day we went was on a somewhat rain-y Thursday morning. There was hardly anyone there and it was great. The second day was around noon on a beautifully sunny Sunday and it was packed. So so many people but still so fun. I definitely recommend going when you think there will be less people but either way this is a fortuna must-do!
Lillianna B — Google review
A little scared to jump at first, the current looked strong. But after seeing a local do it and encourage us, we jumped several times. The water was cool and refreshing, and later there were so many people from all over speaking a bunch of different languages so it just felt like you could come here and enjoy yourself no matter where you're from.
Wayne L — Google review
Such a cool rope swing and a great atmosphere here. Lovely place to swim with lots of spots to jump in too!
Eilidh — Google review
We went just to see the river and were not disappointed. Definitely check this place out regardless if you want to rope swing or not.
Jerica F — Google review
Locals and tourists visit mainly for the nice rope swing. When you don’t want to get wet, find a place on the rocks to look at the jumps, some of the locals did some great tricks.
Henk H — Google review
Very cool local spot to hang out and it's free. We enjoyed people watching there and it was fun to see people kayaking down the springs and jumping off the ropes. There is a rocky path down and not that hard to navigate, it was fun to explore the different areas. Definitely wear swimsuit as you'll want to sit on the rocks by the water and will get wet and wet shoes are a must as the ground is very rocky and slippery. I saw others walking around barefoot and couldn't imagine how painful it must be although maybe locals are used to it. There is parking on the street nearby. Thankfully we were not scammed into paying the "parking attendants" as it was slow season. Right by the side of the road there are people grilling corn and hot dogs. Unfortunately we had already eaten but we would love to go back and buy some food from the local vendors.

Immerse yourself in the world of chocolate with the Rainforest Chocolate Tour, a unique and educational experience set against the backdrop of stunning volcano views. This tour offers an interactive workshop where you can learn about the process of making chocolate, exploring its history, culture, and traditions in Costa Rica. Led by knowledgeable guides like El Chapo and Elio, visitors get to participate in tastings and hands-on activities such as creating their own chocolate concoctions.
When we 1st walked up we could hear the other groups having so much fun and I was only hoping for the same and they didn't disappoint. I love the fact they hit you with alot of history facts and education about what's really happening with fair trade and chocolate companies. Some may find this info hard to take in but it's important and I appreciated that. After the hard trust it was smooth sailing. Are tour guy was sweet, funny and filled with info. We saw frogs and butterflies 🦋 and had alot of chocolate 🍫 it was truly fun and magical. Honestly I've done a handful of chocolate tours and this one was the best! Highly recommended
Sandra B — Google review
The chocolate tour with Roberto was such a fun and unforgettable experience for our whole family. Roberto made the entire tour engaging, informative, and full of laughs. You can tell he truly enjoys what he does, and that energy made the experience even better. Roberto showed us the process from cacao bean to finished product and let us sample different types of chocolate at each stage. It was hands-on, educational, and honestly, just a lot of fun. We even got to try chocolate with various toppings like salt, coffee, and chili powder. What made this tour stand out was Roberto’s humor and storytelling. He kept the kids entertained and had the adults laughing too. It never felt rushed or scripted..just a genuine, down-to-earth experience with someone who clearly loves sharing Costa Rican culture. If you’re in La Fortuna, this tour is a must. My four kids gave it 5 stars.
Kristine D — Google review
We had a wonderful experience. One of the highlights of our trip to Fortuna area. Our guide was Gexel and her trainee who were great! They were incredibly knowledgeable, very fun, and professional. It was a memorable hands on experience that we are so glad we chose to do!
Siris R — Google review
We had an awesome tour. Our guide was Gexel , she was superb, very friendly and informative. Tried different combinations of the chocolate at end of tour. Definitely worth a visit.
Rishad A — Google review
We took this tour because of other reviewers raving about Roberto. He did not disappoint. Very informative. I thought I knew something about cacao, but most of it was wrong! This is a great experience, well worth the money.
Scott L — Google review
The chocolate tour was fun but is really only an hour long. During the first bit our guide brought us over and was doing more of a nature walk than chocolate tour. He kept trying to hype people up about how much chocolate they’d be getting but it got old pretty quick. He pointed out some mold on some of the cacao pods and was commenting on how it needed to be broken off and buried and made a huge deal out of it and then ignored the fact that there were two other pods near him that had the mold on it. Making the chocolate itself was fun and so was mixing things together at the end. Overall was a do it once kind of tour and then not again. I’d probably recommend going on a tour that couples multiple activities together.
Eric O — Google review
Our family of five, with kids aged 7, 5 and 3 had an absolute blast today. Keilor was a very good tour guide and it was fun going through the whole process of harvesting cacao, processing and tasting chocolate. It was very informative and kept the kids engaged the whole time. Highly recommended!
Zachary T — Google review
I really recommend this tour. It's super interesting and informative. Our guide Gexel was so passionate and energetic, clearly she's knowledgeable about the cacao and production process and made sure to include everyone in activities. It's the people who makes places special and everyone who works there is so nice, kind and full of joy. Absolute pleasure even in the rain. You get to try all sort of chocolate. The small gift shop is very well priced for all locally produced chocolate. Definitely worth stocking up here rather than at the airport or other major souvenir shops.

Embark on an exhilarating canyoning adventure in La Fortuna with ABC Canyoning, where you'll descend 200-foot waterfalls and towering cliffs deep within the rainforest. Despite initial apprehension, the lush surroundings will ease any fears as you rappel down multiple stunning waterfalls. Knowledgeable guides like Alex and Javier ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all ages, even spotting wildlife during the hike back up.
Amazing experience, we didn't do the infinite waterfall and still had a great time! Great to get your heart pumping. Then after a hike back up, you get a delicious, farm to table homemade lunch.
Joostin — Google review
What an amazing day we had at ABC Canyoning. Our driver and guide Alex was amazing. Our second guide Arturo was knowledgeable and gave us a gr t hike back to the top, pointing out plants and animals along the way. We had a small group, just our family of four. We laughed and screamed our way through the incredible repels. We were then treated to an authentic Costa Rican breakfast. Everything from pick-up to drop off was a four star experience. Beautiful views, professional and friendly staff, delicious food. If you are looking for a great experience you can’t go wrong.

Alfonso and Arturo were fantastic! We came with my sister and my brother in law and we had an amazing time. I loved everything about our time with these two and would highly recommend if you want a real adventure and authentic taste of Costa Rica.

Amazing adventure! We had a lot of fun and breakfast as well! This is the best activity you can do here! Alex and Oso were so funny and super cool! From the beginning when the went to pick us up to the end! Super safe and a lot of fun! If it rains is even better because the atmosphere is magic! Super super recommended

I loved my experience of waterfall repelling with ABC Canyoning! We had a few girls who were a bit nervous (including me🤪) but they were very kind, patient, and reassuring and safety was their top priority. There were 4 smaller waterfalls and then one large one. I was nervous at first but I knew I was safe and I am so glad I did it! It's totally a fun thing to do if you are in La Fortuna!
Andison F — Google review
Amazing waterfall rappelling tour! Every waterfall is challenging and fun. You actually push off of rock walls & waterfalls in every climb down. Unlike other big tour operators, this Rappelling tour is really over waterfalls and has a high thrill factor. I felt it to be more raw, fun & challenging than a large operator. Alex and Javi were great guides! Don't forget a waterproof lanyard pouch for your cellphone. You will get soaking wet!
SG — Google review
This was such an amazing and exhilarating experience. You dont need much experience in extreme sports to enjoy but you should be in good physical shape. Alex and Alonso made us feel confident in repelling and made it even more fun with their sense of humor and their knowledge of the topography. Liliana made us a typical Costa Rican lunch and it was Delicious.

we had the greatest time riding to the waterfall in the morning! the horses were very well behaved and we enjoyed trotting for a bit too :) got lucky that it was just me and my partner on a beautiful sunday morning. our guide was fantastic and i couldn’t recommend this enough. easy 5 stars

This was one of the things we really wanted to do on our trip! Our daughter has a horse of her own so it’s kind of her life ❤️ Booking this was super easy. We didn’t book way in advance…maybe 3 days. Communication was often whether by email or text. It was also easy to find where to go. The location on the stables and ride was great. We went during the rainy season so we didn’t see as much of the Volcano but we were okay with that. We still went up old lava tubes, saw some other wild life and spent some time loving on the horses. Our guide, Adrian ??, was really great! He was very friendly, even let my daughter and I switch horses and I prefer a slower, hang out in the back kind of horse. The info he gave us about the property and horses after the ride was really interesting as well!
Megan L — Google review
Great ride to the stables, clean bathrooms before descending about 400 stairs to the waterfall was spectacular. A beautiful plunge and back up. We also crossed a suspension swinging bridge. Unfortunately, the wildlife was not out for us. Then a nice ride back. Even in the rain.
Lindsay B — Google review
Truly an amazing tour with our amazing guide Adrian! He was so knowledgeable, my partner & I talked to him for quite a while about his life & some local history/fun facts. The horses were very well cared for and all very sweet, all very well behaved. The riding path is great, with stunning views of the volcano most of the time. Adrian took the time to help everyone get photos. He even gave us a tour of the barn afterwards and let us meet all the horses that were in barn. This experience was one of the highlights of our trip, 10/10 all around. If you love horses like we do, you do not want to miss out on this gem!!!
Meghan M — Google review
Loved my experience horseback riding up to the viewpoint to see the volcano! Unfortunately the weather was not on our side so I didn’t get to actually see the top of the volcano, but the riding experience was still fun. I had previous riding experience but I would say it’s also suitable for new riders! Horses were very calm and well-behaved. I got to ride a little faster at different points and that was super exciting. Our guide Mario was very friendly! Definitely prepare to be sore the next day 😅

We absolutely loved this experience! My daughter loves horses, so we planned to do a horseback riding experience. We are so happy we found Horseback Riding Costa Rica. They were amazing! The Coffee & Chocolate Tour La Fortuna offers an educational and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Visitors can learn about the production processes of coffee and chocolate, interact with passionate locals, and gain insight into Costa Rica's main exports. The tour provides a glimpse into traditional methods of growing, harvesting, and processing coffee beans. With a focus on both education and hands-on experiences, participants have the opportunity to make their own coffee and chocolate while also sampling sugar cane shots.
We did the coffee chocolate and sloth tour. It was all great. Excellent tour guides that taught us all about the coffee and chocolate production. Sloth sightings were amazing! Guides helped you take pictures and get amazing views of the sloths. Looks like a cheesy roadside set up but was actually Great. We spent 4 hours and loved it!

Valeria was an amazing tour guide she was vey informative, friendly, and funny! It was very interesting and the chocolate and coffee was delicious!!! Would definitely recommend for all ages! We also got to try sugarcane and learned a lot about it!
Virginia S — Google review
We did a morning tour with Coffee & Chocolate Tour La Fortuna; it took about 2.5 hours and was wonderful ! Our guide was very knowledgeable and took us around the demo areas of coffee, cacao and sugarcane plants and how the beans / canes are processed. The demo areas have plants of a few different sizes bearing the coffee beans or the cacao fruits and we saw examples of harvesting stages, different stages of fermentation or roasting and grinding, and lastly got samples to taste. The coffee tour was very informative about I roasted, light, medium or dark roasted beans, how their aromas and caffeine contents vary and ended with the guide brewing a pot of coffee using a local drip set up. In the chocolate tour we got to taste some pre made chocolates and also made some ourselves by mixing ingredients like processed cacao powder, sugar, milk, additions like peanut butter etc. Lastly, during the sugarcane tour, he showed us how sugarcane stems are pressed to extract juice. Overall it was a very informative and engaging tour, and worth the time. We even saw a sloth hanging out in one of the tall nearby trees.

We did the coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane tour. It was about 2 hours. Our guide johnny was very friendly and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about all 3 items and got to try some tasty coffee and chocolate that he had made.

I highly recommend this tour! I came with our family of 5, 2 adults and kids ages 11,7 and a 10mo baby. We were also with my dad and uncle who are seniors and we all enjoyed it. It was very informative, we saw and learned a lot about different plants and fruits in the farm and about the process of making coffee and chocolate and even sugar syrup. My sons participated in all the different process and had a great time. The price of the tour is totally reasonable and you can also purchase different wines and chocolates there.

The coffee chocolate and sugar cane tour was all great. Excellent tour by Harold that taught us all about the coffee and chocolate production with so much passion. We had some coffee, tried chocolate and drank the sugar cane.

This was an incredible experience! I was thrilled to witness firsthand the processes of coffee and chocolate production. Having tasted chocolate from various sources, I can confidently say that the fresh, homemade chocolate I enjoyed here surpassed them all. The factory-processed chocolates I've had in the past simply cannot compare. The coffee was equally exceptional. Our knowledgeable guide provided valuable insights throughout the tour, ensuring I learned a great deal. This experience was truly enlightening and a highlight of my trip.

Great informative tour which I would recommend to everyone, even more so if you are a chocolate lover. We booked online and the tour started on time. Step in and the busy road landscape changes to a full cultivation of trees and mixture of coffee, cocoa and cane plantation. Our tour guide Sebastian was the best and humble person with a ton load of information about the 3 items - Coffee, Cocoa and Cane. The set up was modest but Sebastian made it rustic and authentic. We had a blast of time and our favourite part of the tour was eating cocoa seeds raw and then making our own sugarcane juice. Great way to wind down your busy vacation.

Soda Víquez is a must-visit gem in La Fortuna, celebrated for its authentic flavors and warm hospitality. Nestled conveniently next to the Rainforest Cafe, this local eatery offers generous portions of traditional dishes at budget-friendly prices. Diners rave about their casado and pescado platters, which showcase the freshness of local ingredients. The friendly owner treats guests like family, often surprising them with complimentary desserts that add a sweet touch to the experience.
I recommend the chicken nachos and the beef tacos. We also ordered the grilled chicken fillet which was good. This and 2 imperial beers added up to $42. The food is good quality and it shows as it’s almost always busy

This is one of the best sodas in La Fortuna 100% recommend. We ordered the pollo casados and the portion was huge!! So fresh and tasty for such a reasonable price , the owner was also so friendly and made us feel so welcomed we will definitely be back

Best soda in la fortuna. The price is amazing and the staff gave us free shots. Portion size is great, you get a mix of everything in Costa Rican cuisine if you get their plates.

We had an excellent experience at Soda Viquez. Don’t be scared to sit down even if there aren’t other people eating. Glasses of water were brought to our table immediately after being seated and then we ordered mango juices as well which were really delicious. For our food we tried the sea bad with garlic and the tenderloin with mushroom sauce. Both were really good! We also received complementary rice pudding for a dessert.

Been in Costa Rica for almost 2 weeks and this is the best food I’ve had so far. So tasty. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming too. 10/10

A great spot for a meal in La Fortuna. We were told about this place from people in Playa Hermosa. Friendly staff. Food is reasonably priced. Taste is amazing. The casado was great, as well as the sandwiches. Overall a great place to go when you want authentic food at a reasonable price.

Recommended by my apartment manager and the soda didn’t disappoint. I wanted an authentic Costa Rican experience and received more than I bargained for. The picante chicken was excellent and bursting with spices. I wanted a little something extra and asked for a side of plantains, that weren’t on the menu. The soursop juice was fresh and quenched my thirst. The prices were very reasonable for the area. I was given free rice pudding and a shot of their homemade alcohol. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Delicious and super friendly staff. Outside, covered seating. Have to get the Casado (pictured) with steak and onions, rice, beans, yuca (in yellow sauce), a well seasoned potato side dish ( red item), maduro, coleslaw, and vinegar based plantains.

Our first restaurant experience in La Fortuna. Such tasty drinks and food, and the vibe was great!! The dogs hanging out were entertaining 😊

What a vibe. The people are so lovely, the decor feels fun and there is also a local kitty. There are a couple craft beers from a microbrewery to try. And you should! They are excellent . I enjoyed the wild cat ipa. The caprese chicken sandwich was great and came with some delicious fresh cut fries. Diego is a fantastic host the other servers were good too

Stayed in La Fortuna for the week from USA. Stopped here twice and was pleasantly surprised each time, especially after experiences elsewhere in town. Service was friendly and attentive, food was delicious each time. Reasonably priced dishes and drinks, especially being from Chicago. Would recommend the chicken and rice!!

We were staying across the street at the Paradise Hotel Springs and Lava came up as a dinner option. Why there aren’t more reviews on this place is a mystery to me. The atmosphere at night is amazing. The views of the Volcano during the day spectacular. The food and service was excellent. We all had the filet with portobello mushrooms and potatoes. The presentation was very nice and the taste of the steak was excellent. While the cut was a filet it was not a filet mignon as I had anticipated the steak was by no means tough. I would go back in a heartbeat. There were several other menu items that I would like to try.

Heard lots about lava lounge never been, was a but disappointed in visit. There was a group of 4 we stayed there was 2 on staff only 1 other table . It was about 15 min I finally went to bar to get our drinks.. no one came after to ask us if we wanted more drinks we sat for about 30 minutes ..

This place is yummy, fun, and in the heart of the city. Food is packed with flavor. I ordered wings. They were huge. We don’t get wings of that size back home. The wings had great flavor and a nice kick but not powering spice. We also got the nachos. Super good and super in size. For drinks I had a pina colada and pineapple smoothie. They did not disappoint. Atmosphere was cool and hip. Great spot in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. Lastly I love that there was this cute little cat roaming around

Located on high streets of La Fortuna. Great atmosphere with live music. Plenty of options of drinks and cocktails, however the food was disappointing. Pet friendly place and also stray cats and dogs were around. However disappointing was that while paying the bill there was too many surcharges and then they said their card machine isn’t working and to pay cash. We didn’t have that much cash, so they accepted whatever cash we had (100$) and remaining on card, as suddenly their machine started working. Artists are average but the whole ambience is nice. I would just go for drinks and avoid food!

Nestled just a stone's throw from Central Park in La Fortuna, Restaurante Nene's has been delighting locals and visitors alike since its inception in the mid-90s. This charming eatery is celebrated for its diverse menu that showcases the best of Costa Rican cuisine, including mouthwatering ceviche that has earned rave reviews from patrons. Whether you're craving grilled meats or fresh seafood, Nene's offers an array of dishes ranging from shrimp cocktails to hearty arroz con pollo and flavorful pasta options.
Loved the ambiance at Nene's. Our server was Zulema who was attentive, lovely and helped us order. We had the Ceviche Mixto which was AMAZING. We had some at the restaurant and loved it so much we also ordered it to go. We liked their cocktails too. The ceviche is what we still dream about and talk about since leaving the area and what will bring us back.
Siris R — Google review
I certainly liked the ambiance from the moment I walked in. It tries to be upscale, it has hints of that with a wall of wine bottles behind condensation-laden glass, but in reality it's a pretty casual restaurant. The menu is varied with everything from seafood to steak and much more in between. We had a very nice server, friendly without giving us too much disruptive attention. Food presentation was nicely done, definitely on the upscale side, but the taste wasn't. The steak was juicy but not well seasoned. Ceviche was good, but the seabass was overly salted. Considering the dinner cost as much as it does in the New York region, this was an unexpected disappointment.
Berele — Google review
We decided to try this place as our Airbnb suggested it. We read the reviews and thought the negative comments were just one offs. They were not. They are scummy by "upgrading" whatever you ordered without telling you. We ordered a ceviche to share, which the menu showed as 4200 colones. When the bill came, it was 8000c for qty 1, which was never on the menu. They decided to give us a larger portion and charged us accordingly. As for the mains, we ordered from their special menu that is just provided verbally from the server. The prices weren't mentioned. That's our fault for not asking. They ended up charging 14000c for the first main, and 18500c for the other. I wouldn't mind paying this but the food tasted terrible. I spent 10 days in Costa Rica, and this was the worst meal I had. This place is quite hidden, I hope it stays that way so no one dines here. Also, lots of dead bugs on the tables, moved to different tables twice.

Christopher's cocktails are above and beyond. We made multiple trips to visit him at the bar. He took the time to come up with fun and inventive cocktails that weren't always on the menu, they were beautiful and delicious! He made our time at Nenes a delight!

Restaurante Café Mediterráneo is a charming eatery located in La Fortuna, offering delectable wood-fired pizzas and handmade pasta. The restaurant's stylish ambiance and excellent service make it a favorite among visitors. Additionally, the establishment prides itself on being the only place in town that makes its own pasta, with options like spaghetti, fettucini, and ravioli available.
Our family of four had an exceptional dinner on a late evening after arriving in La Fortuna. The location is just up the road from the main street with plenty of parking. The staff were very friendly and made excellent recommendations. The huge pizzas are made fresh, topped with the best ingredients and baked in a wood fire oven. Do not skip on the spaghetti carbonara, yes it is that good.
Jenny V — Google review
We love the ambiance and the place settings, but that's where the pros end. The cons: my wife's salmon wasn't cooked all the way through; her piña colada had next to no alcohol. I asked for a hamburger with no lettuce and the meat to be medium well. I still got lettuce on the burger and the meat was more like medium rare. My French fries were below quality and undercooked. The appetizer, avocado with shrimp topping was the one redeeming part of the meal. We won't return, even though we had a 10% off coupon from the hotel we chose to stay in while visiting La Fortuna.
Gilbert N — Google review
Good food and great service! We came as a group of 8 without a reservation and they were able to seat us immediately (it’s not super crowded in La Fortuna right now). Our food came out quickly as well. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food wasn’t the best we’ve ever had, but still pretty solid!
Emme T — Google review
Overall really good experience! We gave this place a 4/5 stars because it was good but not the best Italian food we’ve ever had. The place definitely had a romantic feel like we were expecting and the service was excellent - our servers were awesome! I ordered the Pasta Carbonara (which I believe they used cream in) and my wife the Salmon and mashed Potatoes (not pictured). Everything was really good but a little under seasoned. It was definitely a very large portion of salmon for the price - which is definitely a win!Would recommend for a nice romantic dinner that still isn’t too expensive.

Excellent for families. Service was great and food was good. Ordered drinks and pizza while my kids played next to us in the playroom. Might have been the most fun they had on the trip!

This pizzeria was recommended to us by an employee of a car rental company in Fortuna – and it was a very good decision. The pizza could even be ordered with extras – it was fantastic, the crust crispy – it was cooked in a wood-fired oven. The local craft beers – IPA and Golden Pale Ale – were also very good! The prices are slightly higher, but in line with the good quality of the food. The service was very attentive, but not intrusive. The pizzeria is highly recommended – we'd happily return another time.

I would like to start with a positive review : The restaurant is located in the center of the town. One thing I would like to mention that the manager of the cafe told us that service fee is not considered tips. However based on our research and when we asked other places service fee is considered tips. Plus taxes . So don’t be fooled ! The place is not designed to have guest during the rainy season. It was pouring and we had to move the table several times. Eventually we moved to another table( still had few drops here and there). We were excited about the food but that disappointed us as well. There were limited choices of dishes. one dish carpaccio that was good the rest of the food was very dry( meat), ceviche ( watery), drinks were very expensive( the quality and service doesn’t align). And we paid around $150 for the table of 4 with only 1 main dish and 3 appetizers. I don’t recommend to go there unless you don’t have any other choices. But there are multiple choices. We went to another place and were much surprised by the quality, prices, attitude: I would highly recommend to visit Cafe Rest Raul Costano Fortuna. There is a nice view, wonderful food, and police staff.
O G — Google review
Food was good, but not great. When you think about grilling you think about the kiss of fire that the grill gives to the meat, and here that was missing. Felt like they punched the meat and then served it. Service was good!! The cocktails were a little toned down. Whenever you see certain ingredients in the cocktail description you expect that flavour to be very present. It was not the case. The price point for the items here was not low, so it just feels like the food was not matching that point.

Bogarin Trail, located in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, offers a 1.5-mile trek through lush landscapes teeming with diverse wildlife. Visitors can opt for a guided tour to enhance their experience and spot sloths, exotic birds, insects, and poison dart frogs. Those who attempted to find wildlife on their own near the roads found it fruitless and recommend heading straight to Bogarin Trail instead.
I loved my guided tour of the trail, with the guide we saw so much wildlife that I wouldn’t have seen on my own. Highlights were the sloths (including a baby), red-eyed tree frog, toucan, and basilisk. Our guide was the owner of the park and you could tell he was very knowledgeable and passionate about wildlife. He opened the park by planting trees and after several years, the animals naturally entered, so it’s nice to see them moving freely in their natural habitats. I could have done this tour again and again!

Great tour to see alot. Definately get a guide. Cost was 45 usd for 2 of us to have a guided tour. We did not make a reservation and only had to wait about 20 min for a tour to start. Our guide, Dennis, was able to find so many things that we wouldnt have found on our own. Also, the guides have tripod monocular to see better and get photos with your phone. Let the guides take photos for you. They'll get the best shot.
Amber C — Google review
Firstly, William was a fantastic guide. Incredible knowledge and eagle-eyed skills to spot all sorts of animals and critters. Thank you for your insight and kindness. Plainly: You will see many animals and more on this tour. We saw our first sloth within one minute on the trails. There is an interesting history to the property that the guide will share with you. The lush, dense forest is fascinating. We didn't even book ahead, just walked up. Most tours are on the hour, so plan accordingly. Bring water.
Jake T — Google review
It was nice, but felt a little bit like walking around in the zoo. Without a guide, you're not gonna see sloths that aren't moving. We went for a guided tour at 8am and saw a few moving sloths which we spotted ourselves. The telescope by the guide is nice to make higher quality pictures or videos for sure. The guide also spotted some owls and a relatively big brown lizard.
Luuk — Google review
We did a morning sloth walk tour and it was great. Our guide was really knowledgeable and had an amazing eye for spotting animals we never would have seen - he was also great at taking photos of the animals for us. We only saw a few sloths as there was a lot of rain but we also saw a ton of different frogs and some birds.
Rachel S — Google review
not just sloths! while we did see four sloths on our walk, there were also plenty of other animals like frogs and birds to see and take photos of. our tour guide William was fabulous. he was really good at taking photos with and without the telescope that each guide carries and had eagle eyes to see the animals. the cold pineapple at the end of the tour was the cherry on top. definitely worth a trip!
James S — Google review
We had an incredible visit with a guided tour. Would recommend using a guide, they are extremely knowledgeable and speak great English. You won’t see a lot without their telescopes, and they will help you take videos and photos through their lenses. We saw about 7 sloths, including mothers with babies. Don’t be put off going around midday, the guides will know where to find the sloths from trips earlier in the day

La Choza de Laurel is a renowned restaurant in Central America known for its high-quality traditional dishes and excellent service. It's a great place to experience authentic Costa Rican cuisine, offering a variety of flavorful options. The menu includes Costa Rican chicken and rice, Arroyo con pollo, freshly made chicken nuggets, Gallo de cerdo (pork), patacones, and churrasco. The food is described as amazing with beautiful presentation and great attention to detail.
WOW! What a fantastic Costa Rican meal! We were looking for authentic Costa Rican food, and saw this place was our best option in the main town, and it surely did not disappoint! We got the farmers lunch (for dinner yes) and the chicken stew / soup. Both were fantastic, had so much flavor, and was honestly the best place we went to eat in La Fortuna. The restaurant is huge, so it feels empty, but probably had the same amount of people as most of the other restaurants. There is parking right outside the restaurant which is always a plus here. The best part, it was probably the cheapest meal we had the entire trip! If you have a chance, you NEED to try the food here! This was even recommended to us by local Costa Ricans.

This was our first stop after arriving to Costa Rica; recommended by some locals. The atmosphere was pleasant. The food was amazing. They brought us a small bowl to taste their Asparagus Soup which was really good. We ordered their Yuca Frita which were good, Gallo Pinto which was delicious (forgot to take a photo of this), fresh Green Salad, and some cocktails. Loved their “picante”. I would eat here again and would recommend to others. Only thing to note is to ask exactly what your plate includes. We had ordered extra things on the side not knowing that it already was included in the plates and we were never informed by the Waiter nor written in the menu description.

Excellent experience visiting La Choza, it service some of typical Costa Rican cuisine plus plenty of variety options, so most likely you will find something you like.. second. Ordering a coffee here is an experience, the coffee will be prepared from the beans state until you the coffee cup in front of you. This is one of must visit in La fortune. Price are good, service is excellent and atmosphere is great.

This is an open air restaurant with traditional Costa Rican food offerings. The service was very good. I especially liked that they grind and pour your coffee at your table and it is soooo very delicious. They have bathrooms and some limited parking. Five-star everything for this great pit stop on the way from or to the airport... the quality of the food is terrific, the prices are reasonable, and the ambience and service is so awesome. We ordered coffee at the end of our meal and they wheeled up a coffee service, ground the beans in an old school mill, and told us later that the coffee was on the house!

Just okay. My husband and I both got churrasco. Originally I wanted chicken and they didn’t have any. We had much better churrasco when we went to the Garra Pata. I honestly do not recommend the food here, at least not the dish I had. The best part of the meal was the small dish of sopa de cerdo (pork soup) that they give before the meal. However, the soup tasted like a seafood soup instead of a pork soup. Staff of very nice

Restaurante La Parada is a popular dining spot in La Fortuna, offering a wide variety of national and international cuisine. Specializing in meats and pizza, the restaurant also provides express service and catering options. Conveniently located in the town center, it's known for its generous portions and reasonable prices. While some visitors recommend sticking to traditional Costa Rican dishes over Americanized options, others praise the delicious food and refreshing fruit juices.
Had a great meal and drinks at Restaurante La Parada in February 2025. It's a really nicely decorated restaurant with friendly, polite staff. We had a couple of cocktails while choosing our food (Caiparinhas - they were goooood), then chose the chicken tacos and shrimp tacos (with a glass of wine each). The food was delicious - I think the chicken tacos were marginally better than the shrimp tacos (but it's a very close thing). If we'd had longer in La Fortuna, we would definitely have gone back to this place....would recommend it 100%.

This restaurant is easy to find and kind of right in the center of town across from the park. I went earlier in the day for lunch and it was empty; however a few people were there when I left. The food was good and the passion fruit/dragon fruit smoothie good too. I did take a minute for the waiter to bring the check after he took my plate away; however, that is no big deal for me as I was enjoying the view and the weather.

My husband and I had dinner and we really enjoyed our food. I’d say stick with the “comida típica” instead of the Americanized entrees. Food was good, we loved the fruit juices. customer service was ok, could have been better. They charged 500 colones for more tortilla chips for the ceviche which didn’t make sense but oh well. Prices are a bit higher compared to other local restaurants. Overall, I’m rating for the food we did have.

Soda La Hormiga is a popular spot in La Fortuna known for its delicious Costa Rican food. Located near a busy bus stop, this family-run open-air restaurant offers some of the best Casado and rice dishes in town. The casual outdoor setting attracts both locals and tourists looking for fresh, tasty meals served in generous portions. While not fancy, the place provides good food and service at reasonable prices, making it an ideal choice for those dining with a big group.
During my stay in La Fortuna, I tried several local restaurants offering traditional Costa Rican food, known as sodas. This particular one was by far the best value for money. A full meal (casado) cost around 3,500 CRC, and the best part—no additional taxes! The food was delicious and authentic, definitely a great way to experience local flavors. The only downside is that they close fairly early in the afternoon, so make sure to go for lunch rather than dinner.

So I got them, the sause was ok, the chicken was ok, rice was undercooked and got stuck in my teeth multiple times (tough and sticky, almost crunchy) I didn't finish eating the rice. View was nice from the patio. The fried platanos was the best part, though it's easy to make at home. Pineapple juice was good also Not too expensive. I hope other people have a better experience

Good place for breakfast in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. There’s a wide variety of breakfast options available. We got the fried egg, beef liver and beef steak. All of the dishes were good value and tasted amazing, however the proportion of rice to mates and protein was way too much, I would’ve preferred to have the number of eggs and half the amount of rice and pay a little bit extra. Fruit smoothies with milk, no sugar were amazing, would highly recommend passionfruit. The staff are very nice. Thank you for the experience.

Restaurant Garra Pata is a popular spot known for its barbecue, steak, and traditional Costa Rican casados. The atmosphere is delightful and the staff are friendly and attentive. Visitors recommend trying the chicarrones as an appetizer, along with the spaghetti Alfredo and churrasco. The natural juices are also highly praised, as well as their housemade chili for those who enjoy some spice. The ceviche appetizer is described as huge and delicious by some patrons.
We had the desire to eat BBQ pork ribs and grilled shrimps and we’ve got exactly what we wanted. The service is friendly and helpful. Food came fast. We’ve got first mixed Ceviche - super delicious and fresh. Than the pork ribs - perfect portion and also delicious. I had the jumbo shrimps with garlic - no woods need just amazing. I recommend this BBQ restaurant.

So good, I had to come twice during our trip. Our server, Wagner was the best. Very friendly and made great recommendations. Steaks cooked over charcoal gave them a wonderful flavor. Will be back on our next trip!

Worst steaks ever. Fillet mignon was 1/2 the size of McDonald's hamburger patty, but cooked more and covered with gravy....for $40. Sirloin cap and ribeye were under 1/2" thick. Tomahawk (and others) were requested rare to medium rare and all were well done. The prices were Houston equivalent the steaks were not! Two years ago this was the best food we had over two weeks...this year the opposite. Hopefully it was just a bad night. Video shows difference in caring between two trips.

Amazing food and atmosphere. Great service and tasty drinks. They finished off the tomahawk at the table with a cool “toast” of the meat with a fireball and cut it in front of you. Cooked and served perfectly.

My partner and I was recommended this restaurant for our dinner from our tour director at Go Ahead Tours in Oct 2022. I think we ordered the Specialties Mixed Grill for two people. We received a grill plate with pork, chicken, beef, and fried shrimp. The order also comes with each person getting a plate of veggies. mash potato, and something else with cheese and two desserts (we got Three Milks and cheesecake). For me, the chicken and pork was dry and tough. The shrimp was good and I don't have much of an impression of the beef... I liked the mashed potatoes. The portion sizes were really big so we only had a bite of the dessert. I remember them being good. My partner said everything was good for him. Just something to note, one of our group member got the Tomahawk and it came out raw in the middle. They had to send it back to the kitchen. We were a pretty big group (10+), so I think we overwhelmed the kitchen because someone in our group mentioned the kitchen staffs having a squabble. The person taking our orders were really patient in taking our orders and providing recommendations.

This place was delicious and had a good atmosphere. The staff was super friendly and attentive. For an appetizer, we got chicarrones, soooog goood, flavorful and tender. I ordered spaghetti Alfredo and my husband got the churrasco. The meat was cooked perfectly and it was so soft and flavorful. We both got a jugos naturales (natural juices) that tasted delicious. They also have their housemade chile of you want some spice. I definitely recommend trying this place out.

Delicious! My husband got a T-bone which is cooked on a wood brining fire and the flavor was incredible! The staff was all very friendly and welcoming. I got the caprese salad and shrimp pesto pasta (been craving pasta) and it hit the spot. The hot sauce they have is so hot,but so addicting. I also had sour sop juice and it was so good! I had never tried it so I thought I would and it did not disappoint. I love that you can watch the chef cooking your meat right behind the glass room at the front of the restaurant. This was recommended by our hostel and many locals, which I see as a plus.

The menu offers a diverse range of fully-vegetarian options, including many vegan and gluten-free choices. The picturesque eco-conscious eatery also features a small market where visitors can purchase locally made products.
Everything was absolutely delicious. The staff was super friendly. We had the tuna tower appetizer, we each had a lunch plate dessert, tea and coffee. Our check was over $100. Not something we could afford to do often but an enjoyable meal and experience.

Exceptional restaurant. Great food, great service and open environment. We were looking for something healthy for lunch. This place exceeded our expectations. We tried the quinoa salad with fresh mango. Beautiful presentation and flavor. The mango quinoa combo tasted amazing. We also tried the falafel sandwich with lightly fried or baked yucca. The sandwich came with lettuce, hummus, thinly sliced dill pickles and possibly onions. Not sure about the onions. I ate it so fast, I can't remember. The yucca sticks were served with homemade yellow mustard sauce. They also gave us homemade ketchup. This place was amazing. Might go back and play music for them tomorrow. Hope to try the deserts as well. Don't forget they add the tip and tax. It added about 20% to our bill.

We enjoyed our meal here! They have a good mix of vegan and non vegan options. The soup was delicious. The nachos were decent but a bit soggy, my husband loved his meal. I would probably skip dessert and opt for a smoothie in the future!

Tasty food but expensive imo! More expensive than vegan restaurants in the U.S. High quality food but for $44 dollars for drink, meal and dessert, I would consider cheaper options first. Healthy good food, great service and the server and workers are very friendly!

Chocolate Fusión is a delightful haven for sweet lovers located near the central park of La Fortuna. This charming chocolate and pastry shop has garnered a reputation as a must-visit spot, offering an array of delectable treats including pastries, chocolate-dipped cookies, cheesecake slices, and indulgent drinks. The inviting atmosphere is enhanced by reliable air conditioning—an oasis in the tropical heat! For coffee enthusiasts, Chocolate Fusión serves up exceptional brews reminiscent of Melbourne's café culture.
Absolutely scrumptious! The amazing coffee experience starts with a friendly and smiley staff. They are prompt to answer questions about their exquisite coffee, amazing chocolate and delicious baked goods (repostería). If you don’t speak Spanish, they can help you in English or if you want to practice ordering in Spanish, they are very patient and helpful. If you care about good quality coffee beans and brew, you must come to this place. Cheers!

Beautiful shop, tasty treats—but not worth the price. We stopped into Chocolate Fusion for a sweet break and enjoyed the overall atmosphere. The coffee was solid, and the chocolates were good—but not $45-for-10-chocolates-and-two-drinks good. Everything looked beautiful and was clearly made with care, but the prices felt more like luxury branding than true value. If you’re looking for a small indulgence or a gift, it’s fine—but don’t come hungry.

Seems like a place where you will find everything you’re looking for when it comes to chocolate, treats, pastries, and even coffee. They have ice cream and coffee as well as chocolates. I give it four stars only for the fact that the prices are a bit steep for the average Costa Rica. Other than that, excellent variety.

Nice coffee and dessert place. Very rich chocolate flavours and beatiful interior - although note it does get very busy throughout the day. Molten lava cake was great but they did not make it warm enough. Ice cream is also nice but nothing special. European prices

Me & my husband came here for our honeymoon and we fell in love with this place. Every morning we’d come in order a different coffee and play chess. The atmosphere is so calm and welcoming , there’s plenty of spots to sit and relax. They have games laid around everywhere , pastries, and ice cream. A selection of all different types of coffees and drinks as well. Yarirza always served us and we looked forward to seeing her every morning and saying hi! Her hospitality was always appreciated and she was very nice and has a welcoming smile. We highlight recommended you give Chocolate Fusion a try :)

I’ve been here every time I come through La Fortuna. The vibe inside is cozy, welcoming, and smells delectable. They offer a large selection of treats from Ice creams, chocolates, and pastries. My husband loved his cremita (a large croissant pastry filled with creme and topped with chocolate) and my pavlova was absolutely delectable! The meringue was airy, crisp, and perfectly melted in mouth. The cream inside was kissed with a delicious blueberry anglaise. And of course, the cappuccino with Costa Rican espresso beans was rich in flavor. Even though we visited close to closing time, the staff never made us feel rushed to leave. They were welcoming and kind. This is a must for coffee and sweet treats in La Fortuna.

Spectacolar Cantina lives up to its name in every way! From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome — warm, friendly, and full of great energy. You can tell they love what they do, and it makes all the difference. The atmosphere is vibrant and full of life — colorful décor, great music, and an overall buzz that makes you want to stay a while. It’s the perfect spot for a fun night out with friends or a lively dinner with family. We opted for karaoke which made the memory of this place even better. Came here with the family to watch a UFC pay-per-view fight and we’re so glad we did! We’ve tried a few other spots along this strip, but nothing compares to the vibe and atmosphere here. The seafood soup is a must-try, and their margaritas hit the spot. Super clean, family-friendly, live music, and best of all—plenty of TVs downstairs so you won’t miss a moment of the action!

Best pulled pork taco I have ever had! We stopped in for dinner our first night there because they were the busiest place we saw and we ended up eating there again the next day because the food was so good. Staff was super friendly and spoke good English. Taco Tuesday is $2.00 mix and match tacos so you can try all the tacos!

If you're looking to get banged up on booze, this is the perfect place for you. If you're looking for a quality meal, go elsewhere. For starters, we got the guacamole (really just smashed avocado), elote, chicken tacos, and a tamarindo margarita. The best thing here was the tacos which were average. The elote was pretty bad, the corn was really hard and felt like it wasn't even cooked. Overall, it just felt like a bar to attract tourist, and nothing more.

La Fortuna Pub is a budget-friendly bar that offers excellent service with very friendly and helpful staff. The menu includes a variety of drinks, including cheap margaritas and 2-for-1 specials on Costa Rican drinks. It's recommended for casual hangouts and affordable drinks. The pub also offers a great selection of beers, including porters and stouts, which are uncommon in Costa Rica. Additionally, it serves delicious Costa Rican staple food items like Casado.

They were prompt to come over when I entered and they came by my table frequently to ensure I had all I wanted. The waitress suggested a burger and I tried it. It was good. I had countless margaritas… because they were cheap. I also had some Costa Rican drink (can’t remember the name) because they had 2 for 1. Travesía Restaurant is a must-visit spot in La Fortuna, offering delicious food and friendly service. The casado with chicken and fish tacos are highly recommended, as well as the ceviche and the mixed meat and veggies served on a mini grill. The restaurant has a broad drink and wine menu, including options for kids. Reservations are recommended, especially around 6-7pm, even in the off-season.
Travesía Restaurant in La Fortuna is a must-visit! The entire experience was incredible — from the amazing atmosphere to the top-notch food and drinks. We started with the ceviche, which was fresh, flavorful, and a perfect way to begin the meal. For drinks, we enjoyed a perfectly made margarita and some of the best fresh fruit smoothies we had during our trip — so refreshing! The highlight was definitely their select meat option where you pick your cut, three sides, and one sauce. Everything was cooked perfectly — the meat was tender and juicy, the sides were delicious, and the sauces added the perfect finishing touch. We wrapped up with the lava cake for dessert, which was rich, gooey, and absolutely worth it. The combination of great food, fantastic drinks, and an inviting atmosphere makes Travesía a must when you’re in La Fortuna. Highly recommend!

Okay where to begin. The food was very good. All of it. Steak perfect. Shrimp tasty. Chicken juicy. Sausages great. Veggies just right. The presentation with the grill on our table... A must. It said for two people but we had a lot of leftovers and we ate a lot. Here's one thing I don't recommend... Don't get a coffee there. They use a machine making instant coffee and c'mon people we all know that's such low quality like the instant coffee you find in your workplace and they were charging way too much. I saw waiters over at that machine all night swiping and pushing buttons then patrons so happy to get their coffee not knowing its source. This place prides itself as a high quality steakhouse. Please get rid of that machine or hide it from our view. Beyond that - all prices very reasonable and food quality high. The best dinner we had during our trip. And like others mentioned, get there before 6pm for a table otherwise reservations required. We watched people getting turned away all night. The dining room is small. They take credit card and apple pay.

This place absolutely deserves a 5 star!! We visited first time, ordered a tuna ceviche/tartare and shared a 400g ribeye steak (cost ~17,300 colones) It comes with 3 complimentary sides and 1 sauce, lots to choose from. Had our steak medium rare like how we always do, and it was the best darn steak we had. It was soft, not chewy, and it just melts. Sooooo good. We had mushroom sauce and got an extra capers sauce, both were excellent! Mash potatoes were good too! The meal was so good that we went back again for dinner the next night and it did not fail us. 😋😋 now we're thinking if we should return for thr 3rd night in a row. Haha, but anyway, if anyone is visiting la fortuna and wants a good steak, this is your go to place 👍👍👍

What a great experience! We walked in around 5pm without a reservation, but we were quickly accommodated. The servers were really patient and let us practice our Spanish, even though they all speak English. The food was excellent and reasonably priced for a very touristy town. Travesía Restaurant is a must-visit if you’re looking for authentic flavor, great service, and a lively atmosphere. The food was outstanding — perfectly grilled meats, fresh salads, and sides that were full of flavor. Everything tasted homemade and high-quality, and the portions were generous (great for sharing). The service was excellent — friendly, attentive, and fast even though the restaurant was busy. The staff made great recommendations, and everything came out fresh and hot. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, with a true local charm that makes the dining experience even more memorable. It’s the perfect place for a family dinner, date night, or group outing. 📍 If you’re in the area and searching for the best steakhouse, authentic Latin food, or a top restaurant for groups, Travesía is the spot. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

YOU HAVE TO EAT HERE. We got the seafood grill and the mixed grill (enough food for 4-5ish people). The meat was cooked to perfection. The melted butter was divine. The shrimp was excellent, and of course you have to get the plantain chips. We recommend the “dirty monkey” for a drink option. Servers were super attentive too.

We got a Mixed Grill platter. The food was delicious, perhaps a bit too much for 2 people (we weren't able to finish all the potatoes...) The variety on the mixed grill platter was very pleasant but a part of the steak had just a bit too much fat cap. Chimichurri was absolutely delicious and totally made up for any fatty steak. Despite not speaking perfect English, the team made us feel incredibly welcome.

Nice concept for multiple options. However, it is expensive. It is on the side of the main road through La Fortuna. It is almost twice as much as some other food locations. We came from Hotel Los Lagos and pizza was half the price that it is here.

Really enjoyed this experience! It's just as it says, a marketplace where you can go up to he different stands and order whatever you want. It's very casual and it has free wifi. All of the food options looked great so it was hard to decide what to order. The taco truck was definitely worth it. I got the mixed tacos. The carne asada tacos and birria tacos were amazing. My friend got the burrito and it good and filling. From the burger/sandwich station, my other friends got the paninis that came with potato wedges which were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We ordered drinks as well. While they weren't as fancy as pictured, they tasted good. There's also free wifi which is w nice bonus. A staff member comes around to share the info. Would definitely recommend for a large group who has different preferences and has trouble deciding what to order but also the food here is great!

Desafio Adventure Company offers thrilling experiences in the lush landscapes of Costa Rica. One of their popular activities is rafting on Rio Sarapiqui, known for its Class 3-4 rapids and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Another adrenaline-pumping adventure is canyoneering at Gravity Falls, where participants can rappel down a 132-foot waterfall, jump into natural swimming holes, and navigate rock slides.
We did the Arenal and Hanging Bridges mini combo tour with Catalina and it was fantastic! We met at the tour company office, were provided transport to the hanging bridges where we stopped multiple times to view sloths, toured the hanging bridges, stopped for drinks & fruit, and then went on a volcano walk near Arenal. Afterwards when we thought we were headed back and finished, we were told that they were providing lunch for us (normally not included but there was a mix up) and had a fantastic casado lunch before our tour ended. The food was the best tour food we had. Many thanks to our wonderful guide, Catalina whom helped my mom cross the bridges when she was nervous and spent a lot of time explaining the animals and birds. Highly recommend! Pura Vida!

BEST adventure on our trip!! We did canyoning and white water rafting. We felt super safe with both activities, staff knowledgable and really made our experiences memorable! Picture packages only $30 for each activity and worth every dime! I choose not to take my camera/phone (planned to have in a waterproof pouch), but wish I would have taken it canyoning. The pics they took were good, but I would have liked to had some pictures from the bottom up and scenery. There was time to do that (but not with whitewater rafting; my hands were busy the whole time, lol).

We had an absolute blast. The rafting tour was well organized, and the price was more than reasonable. Rolo and his crew were awesome and knowledgeable. We saw sloths, different birds, and a piranha even jumped in our raft which was not planned! The fruit break was great and so was lunch after we were done. They took great pictures and the price was also very reasonable at $40. This was a perfect day for us with fun and adventure! Highly recommended!

We really loved Desafino for rafting! Highly recommend! We had a blast and we felt safe the entire time. The crew was super attentive and took amazing photos, and the lunch and fresh pineapple was delicious. The rapids were so fun — we did Class II-III on the Sarapiqui river and it was so awesome. Plenty of action and adventure but also time to chill. We saw monkeys and sloths. It was so cool!

Desafio Lost Canyon in La Fortuna was every bit exciting and filled with drops and rappelling from waterfalls. There was a total of 7 people on our tour and the staff made me feel safe and secure on the ropes and cables. The photos and videos taken during the tour had an extra costs but well worth it for savoring the memories. Canyoning was the highlight of all the tours taken in Costa Rica. The lunch after hit the spot with hot soup, salad bar and the usual rice and beans with chicken.

Katarina was a wonderful guide on our Hanging bridges tour and our Arenal volcano hike. She is amazingly passionate and knowledgeable about the rainforest plants and wildlife she knows a ton of history about the area as well. Highly recommend! Don't do the combo unless you are physically fit, break it into 2 trips both are great.

I can not overstate how amazing the whitewater rafting experience was with Desafio. The team managed to take me and my partner on a tour and we had the absolute best time. The whole team took our safety incredibly seriously and helped guide us through some amazing white water rafting experiences. This ended up being the highlight of our trip and we will definitely do it again. Thank you to the whole team - we loved our experience!

Kathy was amazing! They offered transportation to and from our lodging location, however we had a vehicle so we did not opt in for it. We arrived and we were the only people so we had an intimate salsa lesson for about an hour and a half! It was our first time ever and we definitely progressed as she taught us essential steps and some further, more advanced steps that we got to try and now can go home and practice on our own! It was fun and I would 10/10 recommend!

Don Juan Tours La Fortuna is a family-owned business that offers an educational and enjoyable experience centered around the production of coffee and chocolate. The tour takes visitors through the entire process of coffee making, from seed to cup, before delving into the world of delicious chocolate. The farm is also up for sale and boasts a prime location near Arenal volcano, offering a picturesque setting with abundant fruit trees. Visitors have praised the accommodating staff and knowledgeable guides who provide tours in both English and Spanish.
Had an amazing walk up experience! We drove up around 20 minutes before the hour or so, was able to get added in, checked in and just shopped around while we waited. We did forget bug spray but they had small cheaper bottles available there as it's really a necessity for this outdoor tour. 🦟 Our tour guide was YEN and he was great! So personable, knowledgeable, friendly and obviously loved his job. I know I asked him way too many questions about plants on the property but he knew all the answers and even walked around longer and out of the way to find examples and show me things I was looking for. We did chocolate first and then coffee. There was a little over an hour dedicated to each one and they were so much more interesting than we expected! We learned so much. It was a great add on activity for a rainy day - and was like $40 each plus tip and a bag of coffee to go of course 💁 would definitely recommend but be sure to have time, patience and a listening ear.
Casey N — Google review
This tour was super fun and educational, my teens all absolutely were fully engaged throughout the whole chocolate portion of the tour and of course lost some interest when it got to coffee, but Bryan (he was so patient and hospitable!) our Tour guide made it super fun and engaging as well as interactive for them. Making our own chocolate bars from scratch cacao was absolutely a core memory made, indeed! We just did a walk up at the top of the hour, and although they said the next tour was not for close to another hour, they made an exception and started our tour within five minutes and we were just our group until halfway through a second. Group joined us. The gift shop is pricey, but has very high-quality items for purchase and the tours aren’t cheap but it’s an experience well worth it!

Jeremy did a great job leaving the tour and gave us lots of interesting pieces of information. I guess I expected there to be more coffee trees and cocoa trees but we didn't go out into the fields where the actual plantations are so having enough trees around to teach us about them was good. Making the chocolate bar was fun and learning about the different kinds of coffee was also interesting and entertaining. He found some different birds and a sloth for us to see. Overall a very good experience.
Julian W — Google review
We had the best time. Our guide Alex was so informative and really went above and beyond to make sure we got to see all kinds of the nocturnal creatures. He was well versed on the cocoa growing and making process, super knowledgeable about the wildlife and threw in some very cool info on Costa Ricas history. To top it off he was friendly and fun. We made our own Chocolate bars, we saw lots of animals and had zero complaints.

I recommend this tour to anyone visiting Costa Rica, especially if you like coffee and chocolate. Our guide Kairo was very informative. He showed us step by step how coffee and chocolate are made. We got to make our own chocolate bar. We tried the coffee. Loved it!!

A great tour that I highly recommend! It was very informative as well as active as they included their participants in little activities along the way. The guide made it very fun and the group size was also great! The samples we could try were very very delicious. Also transportation from and to hotel was included! I can highly recommend this tour! 😍😊☕️🍫 ps. We even saw a tucan and sloth right on their property.

What an interesting tour! We learned a lot in two hours with a guide who was both professional and had a great sense of humour. The coffee we tasted was delicious and so was the chocolate. The groups were the perfect size. Top experience

Arenal Mundo Aventura Park offers a variety of activities including zip lining, horseback riding, rappelling, and visits to the Maleku village. Visitors can enjoy the thrill of zip lining with experienced guides ensuring safety and fun. The full-day trip includes surprises like horseback riding and swimming in a waterfall. The hike to the waterfall is described as beautiful and easy, while the Maleku village tour provides insight into Costa Rica's history.
What an amazing experience!!! We did the Combo rappelling and zip line tour and it did not disappoint!! The best part was that my husband and I were the only ones out of a group of 40 people that had purchased the combo so we got to go first and it basically turned into a private tour! So no needing to wait for the big group to go across the lines. Our guides were AWESOME! Thank you Alex and Harrison for being so friendly, answering our questions and making the experience top notch! The rappelling was so cool! We rappelled along the waterfall. They explain everything step by step so even if this is your first time, I recommend trying it! The climb back up is pretty intense though, but worth it! The zip lines were so fun!! At the end we got to visit the little artisan village where we purchased a balsa wood carving and then got to ride back on horseback. What a phenomenal experience! Highly recommend!
Veronica U — Google review
We did a zip lining tour here (7 lines) and it was fabulous. I felt very safe, the guides were terrific and the views were outstanding. We got to see a slice of the area that we probably wouldn't have otherwise. I'd definitely check out their other tours as well. The land is very beautiful and seems like they have great staff and trained guides.
Heather C — Google review
I had the most amazing experience with this company. I purchased the package that includes the zip lines, rappelling, and horseback riding. Funnily enough I was the only one out of the whole group to do so, so it ended up being like a private adventure! My guides, Gerson and Jose were so kind and attentive, they were the best. The rappelling (80m next to a waterfall) was intense and so worth it. The views from the zip lines were incredible, and the horseback riding was the calm ending the day needed. Loved it so much, 10/10 recommend booking with them.
Faith M — Google review
My family and I had the best experience zip-lining here! We did the tour with 7 ziplines and it was the perfect length. The guides kept us safe, were extremely kind, and had a great sense of humor. The ziplines themselves were thrilling and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. The guides even pointed out a howler monkey during our tour! Definitely recommend!
Camryn A — Google review
You can’t go wrong choosing this place for the horseback riding waterfall hike. The horses are well taken care of and have a lot of energy. I had Willy (leader of the group) and my boyfriend had Dollar. They let us trot and canter. It’s about a 30 minute ride to the stairs that leads to the waterfalls. There we were able to change into our bathing suits. Our guide, Danny was great! He was easy to talk to with a lot of knowledge. He leads the way down to the waterfalls and back up allowing us to stop and catch our breath while not feeling rushed. The waterfall is amazing! Very strong waves it creates but if you decide to jump in there are lifeguards there. Not easy climbing over the boulder rocks so be careful and wear water shoes. The other side allows for more relaxed wading and swimming in the cold but refreshing water. There are little fish that hang out with you. Definitely a must see attraction!
Bren — Google review
We paid $19pp to do a self guided hike to the ls fortuna waterfall from the tour center. We felt this would be the more scenic option as opposed to the 500 steps up and down at the La Fortuna waterfall visitor center. Starting off we walked through the garden which had a few small ponds. Then the trail eventually came out onto the road where we walked uphill for 1-2 miles until we reached the restrooms/break area. We were able to spot several species of toucans from the surrounding trees. After the restrooms we started the decent to the waterfall. There is a swinging bridge about 1/4 of the way down. Once you reach the bottom there is a swimming area and platform to view the waterfall. It’s 10km total (~6mi). I highly recommend this option if you are looking for a more gradual ascent / decent with scenery.
Jerica F — Google review
The Adrenaline Combo package was amazing and a must do! If you’re on the edge or nervous about the rappelling, just do it! Alfonso and Sebastian were the best guides! Very professional and safety was their number one concern. I was very nervous to rappel but would do it again and again without hesitation after this experience. After the rappelling, we continued with the zip lining which was also awesome with spectacular views! After walking through the Maleku Village, we ended our tour with horse back riding back to the beginning. Do not miss out on this experience, just do it!! - Pura Vida!🇨🇷🤙🏻
Hunter K — Google review
Zip lining was definitely the highlight of our trip. We had a beautiful clear sunny day that we had amazing views of Arenal the entire day! The zip line guides were amazing, fun, and personable. You can tell they clearly enjoyed their jobs. We accidentally opted for the 7 line tour AND individual waterfall hike. I would advise against the waterfall at the same time due to packing a swimsuit, lunch, and having to take a tractor up the mountain. 10/10 would visit again!

Mega Supermarket La Fortuna is a large, well-stocked supermarket near the bus terminal on the river road. It's a great place to stock up for your next long ride.
Much cheaper than at the "Super Christian" e.g. the same bag of crisps was just 1300 here compared to 2500. The place is pretty big with lots of fruits.

Appears to be good value for money until you pay. Price on ticket displayed was more than 10% lower than price charged. When I queried they said it was because I was not a member. This is not apparent from any signage. Buyers beware. Cheaper in Super Rosvil.

Signs (above head) were in Spanish and English which was nice. No AC so it can get hot there. Decent variety however we couldn't find coffee "socks"

Costa Rica and Beer Our over 1 million fans have observed we are a beer connoisseur and love sampling the best beers on our global travels. You read about our birracles where we simply thought of una birra en Italia and it manifested into physical form by sheer thought alone. Read the story in our Natural Born Miracle Makers: Book One, and see it in our forthcoming thELight (tm) feature film starring Russell Brand and Camelia Crous Sadly, I give locally available Costa Rica beer (Imperial and Bavaria) a mediocre ranking for quality and price. Costa Rica is not a destination for lovers of high quality cerveza, birra, beer and piwo. Again, expect US/EU pricing or greater for mediocre quality and taste.

Hotel Arenal Xilopalo is a basic yet comfortable accommodation within walking distance of the town. The hotel offers simple, spacious rooms with amenities such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Guests can enjoy a small pool, restaurant, and game rooms on the property. The highlight of the hotel is its stunning views of the volcano from the restaurant. Additionally, birdwatchers will appreciate the opportunity to spot toucans and parakeets while enjoying fresh fruit left out for them by the staff.
We loved Hotel Xilopalo! It is set right in the jungle, but within walking distance to the hub of the town. Staff were absolutely fantastic in every way! Jose gave us a warm greeting upon arrival and gave us a personal tour pointing out all of the amenities before bringing us to our room. The rooms are large with a natural wood design and very reasonably priced. In the morning, we had coffee and breakfast surrounded by many types of birds and a beautiful view of the volcano. We did a night walk on the property as well as a sloth tour with Armando. We couldn't have asked for a better tour - we saw lizards, frogs, toucans, and several sloths. We would absolutely visit again!

This hotel and their lovely staff far exceeded our expectations. The location is so beautiful and is still within walking distance of town. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The view from the restaurant where we enjoyed breakfast was spectacular! The staff were so helpful and wonderful. We greatly appreciated all of their help in arranging some tours and providing recommendations. Everyone was so kind, and we loved our stay.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel in La Fortuna! Nestled in the jungle, it’s the perfect spot for birdwatching right from the property. The staff (Jose and Luis) were all incredibly kind and welcoming. They gave me a brief tour before check-in, which was a lovely touch. Breakfast was delicious, and enjoying it with a view of the volcano made it even more special. I also want to give a special shoutout to Armando, my guide for the sloth tour. He helped me spot 11 sloths along with many beautiful birds. His passion and enthusiasm were truly impressive. He even offered me a night tour around the hotel grounds, where we found various tree frogs, absolutely magical! The next evening , he spotted more frogs and lizards and kindly showed them to me again. Armando is an incredible guide with sharp eyes and a deep love for nature. Thanks to him and the wonderful hotel team, my stay was unforgettable. Highly recommend!
Sasa J — Google review
It may not be the perfect place for everyone, but for me it was. Very comfortable rooms without unnecessary luxury, cozy common area with swimming pool and hammocks, lush jungle garden with a huge variety of plants and interesting animals, all kinds of fascinating stuff to discover & admire on the hotel grounds: tons of petrified wood "xilopalo" from nearby & art made from it, wooden logs containing stingless bee colonies - a true gem for nature lovers. And great views of Volcan Arenal from the breakfast area, truly friendly and helpful staff, great selection of tours one can book (the Rio Celeste tour was excellent!). Hotel is located a short walk from downtown La Fortuna. As a solo female traveler in my 60s, I felt safe & welcome at the hotel and in the town of La Fortuna. Hope iI will get a chance to stay there again sometime.

This was the perfect hotel for our stay in La Fortuna. It's wood construction and unique design, with an amazing view of Arenal volcano is ideal. It's perfect if you want want to stay in a hotel that reflects what this area is all about - nature. It fits in with its surroundings perfectly, and it's tucked away at the end of the road so it's very quiet - save for the frogs and birds serenading! Also, it's good value and has everything you need to wait out the rain, or enjoy breakfast and dinner.
Jason W — Google review
Xilopalo is an absolute gem among the numerous other options for staying overnight in La Fortuna. The location is of course unbeatable: you can be in the middle of the lively city in a few minutes on foot, but at the end of the street you are blessed with an unobstructed view of the Arenal and a wonderful atmosphere. The rooms are cleaned daily and are very spacious. The beds are super comfortable. The air conditioning works perfectly. The pool area is very relaxing, in the evening you can swim in great lighting. Breakfast is à la carte, they also have a restaurant that prepares excellent dinners. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the prices are perfectly okay. We cannot understand the bad reviews regarding odor and hygiene. We had a room on the top floor of the building next door. It certainly seems to be very ok. The only thing we didn't like was that the rooms didn't have a safe.
Le C — Google review
It was a great stay ! The hotel is surrounded by nature so you will see a lot of animals in the garden, I saw birds, lizards, frogs and a sloth ! There is several places to sit and observe the nature around, hammocks and a pool. The pool is very cold. There is a restaurant in the hotel where they also serve the breakfast (9$). At this place you will have a view of the garden, with many birds and if you're lucky, you can see the Volcano. The staff is super nice, and I even got a little night tour of the garden to spot some animals ! The rooms are really basic, don't expect anything fancy, but clean. It's a 5min walk to go to the city center.

Youth hostel
Nestled in La Fortuna, Hotel La Choza Inn is conveniently close to Paradise Hot Springs and Baldi Hot Springs. The hostel offers a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff, making it an ideal spot for budget-conscious travelers looking for an authentic Costa Rican experience. The rooms are clean and well-maintained, with a charming courtyard adding to the ambiance. While the lack of storage space may be a downside, the daily cleaning service ensures cleanliness.
Stayed at La Choza for 3 nights and it definitely was a great space for what you're looking for within a budget - a bed to lay in, a shower (sometimes hot water) restroom, a delicious traditional breakfast and a very helpful and resourceful staff. This location is a quiet, dead-end area but walking distance from everything. During our visit it wasn't much of a party scene. Shuttle services - they are very strict on timing so you need to plan your day and will only provide roundtrip services to sites offered by La Choza.
Gabriela C — Google review
This hostel was very nice overall. For me the pros were the staff, who was always helpful and kind, and the common areas that were also equipped with all the necessary. The cons would be the rooms that could use some small adjustments that could greatly improve life of travellers. For example there is no lights on the beds nor tents and the light in the room is weak at night. The ratio bathroom to people could be improved and the cleanliness as well. Overall I would still recommend it as it is close by everything and the experience can still be nice just fairly rudimental.
Silvia R — Google review
Do not get the "unlimited" shuttle for 20usd. (I doubt that they'll continue running it for much longer anyway. Hardly anyone uses it.) The shuttle does not run as advertised. You have to pre-arrange with them to take you somewhere in the morning and take you back at a specified time (decided by them not by you). When I pointed out that this is not what the schedule shows or how the shuttle is described when sold, the man at the desk simply gaslighted me. First, he blamed his colleague then he blamed me. He told me on the phone that I would get a refund. And then later he pretended the conversation never happened. Such a shocking and shameless liar. His tone was so aggressive and condescending. Disgusting man. His behavior is not that surprising when you look at comments about the hostels management from other reviewers. There are hostile and aggressive signs everywhere warning people about laws and fines etc. it creates an unpleasant environment. They say that people who are untrustworthy are always suspicious of others. Everything about the way this hostel is run shows that. The hostel administration is completely untrustworthy. And that is why they demand a deposit for everything - even a towel. They threaten you with laws but do not obey the law themselves. They do not provide services as they are described when sold. They still have not provided me with a valid tax receipt. After I asked three times, they gave me some meaningless piece of paper that doesn't even have the name of the hostel on it. The shuttle has many broken seat belts and missing headrests in the back seats. It's not a legally compliant vehicle. Do not book any tours or extra services through them. Everyone I spoke to who had done a tour through the hostel felt ripped off and were dissatisfied with the quality. Book with Viator or just go to a tour operator office in town instead. Normally when you book through a hostel they quality control. These guys just pocket the commission and don't care that they've sold you a dud. I only stayed there because I was booking last minute. It is totally overpriced for what they give. Other hostels provide much better facilities and services (without the lying and threats). Rooms are cramped with few amenities. Always a queue for the toilet. WiFi is sketchy. The only saving grace of the hostel is the nice breakfast and small courtyard. Avoid it if you can. And if you have to stay there book through a third party and don't get any of the extras.
Reema J — Google review
This place has comfy beds, a lot of seating, a great free breakfast, it gets cleaned daily, small lockboxes and lots of backpackers. It also has a free shuttle to the hot springs river that leaves at 1:00pm. You can walk to tons of good restaurants and the local rope swing. We spent a lot of time there. They have a fridge and kitchen area thats clean and free to use. The cons are the AC only comes on at 9PM and turns off in the morning, and a lot of the doorknobs are a little wonky and hard to open. We had a good time here and the breakfast saved us a lot of money.

We recently stayed at your hostel and were very disappointed by the unprofessional behavior of one of your staff members. While we fully respect the no-smoking policy, we were standing outside discussing our plans when I was rudely told to move from a step. Later, when I asked about the cheapest way to Monteverde, the staff member dismissively told me he was off duty. My friend later exhaled residual smoke inside, and the staff member aggressively shouted at her, even threatening to call the police. He also called the boss, who initially argued with us but later had a calm discussion. However, the staff member kept interrupting and was extremely rude throughout. We understand hostel rules, but guests should be treated with respect. We hope you address this issue.

Las Colinas is a straightforward accommodation option that offers a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the volcano. The hotel also features a bar and complimentary breakfast for guests. While some visitors found it to be a great place to stay, others particularly enjoyed the recommended restaurant on-site, praising the delicious cuisine and attentive staff. Although some noted noise from nightlife, they still appreciated the friendly atmosphere and central location. The rooms are described as small but clean, with glass walls facing the courtyard rather than scenic views.
Great location and rooms. Located right in the center of town. Can't beat the location for convenience. Great view of the volcano on the second level of the hotel. Nice open air area for relaxing and enjoying the view. Rooms were nice and clean. Obviously, since it is located in the center of town, we heard more noise and the ongoing activities in the street until around 9pm but that wasnt a surprise. Great place, we will be back again.
Patrick L — Google review
We are staying at Las Colinas Hotel, and unfortunately, our experience has been far from pleasant. Upon arrival, we discovered that our room faces a busy street, resulting in constant noise that disturbs us both day and night. The single-pane windows provide no sound insulation, making it possible not only to hear traffic outside but also conversations of passersby, which significantly reduces both our privacy and comfort. Another major issue is the beds— the mattresses are so worn out that you can feel every metal spring, making a restful sleep nearly impossible. As for the bathroom, it does not even meet basic standards, but I’d rather not go into details. When we tried to address these problems and requested a room change, the staff showed no willingness to help, and our request was dismissed with what felt like mockery. Overall, our stay here has been a huge disappointment, and I would not recommend this so-called hotel to anyone. We will definitely never return.
Martin P — Google review
Downstairs room with no window and no ventilation even in bathroom. Bed cover has dirt or something on it and needs washing. It is not a blanket or bed spread. Room and AC smells of mold/mildew. There is water stansing behind the toilet. Had to turn off air after we returned from dinner it smelled that bad. Nothing dries...towels, swim suit..nothing. I already have a sore throat and we have 2 more nights here. :( Staff are really friendly and food in the attached restaurant has been good. I would not stay here ever again. I submitted complaint to G Adventures and to my travel agent.

We booked as a group. One room they gave us was pathetic with very bad odor only upon strong confrontation they changed our room. All the while saying they sold out.. couple of rooms had water logging issues. Hot water cannot be called hot water. Very thin walls making the rooms on ground floors uncomfortable while at night. Staff are friendly but management needs to understand the needs and should cater towards that.

Superb location, can walk to places in La Fortuna. The roof top dining area was nice. The food we ordered were pretty good. They have a secured parking place which was great but it is about 500 mts away. The room was tiny. Needs major updates and looks like the last update was like 20 years back. The AC even though cooled the room well, made such a loud noise that we were not able sleep peacefully. Since we had to get it as last minute option, we did not have much choice. But the location and the view was the saving grace.

Stayed here for 3 nights as part of the G Adventure tour , worst accommodation so far. We have stayed in better campsites. Hot shower on only one day ! Broken air con that leaked down wall leaving a puddle on floor every day. Reception unable to sort it apart from wiping it up ! Some lights not working unsafe electrics in bathroom. No safety deposit box and room door dodgy lock ! Shocked the G Adventures use this accommodation. Last night new group arrived and sat up on terrace smoking weed in a no smoking hotel. If you need fresh towels take your wet ones to reception otherwise they won't be changed. Only positive is the view and the restaurant attached to hotel. Manager came on to our transport on day of departure and apologise to everyone for all the problems and stated they would get sorted.

This was a perfect stay. The location, cleanliness, and views were great. The included breakfast was a treat especially since it starts at 645am so you can eat before any early tour. But, the best part, is the staff. Everyone from the front desk to the kitchen and cleaning staff were all super nice and genuinely wanted to make everyone's stay wonderful. Their communication through whatsapp was a great add too.

Great location with Volcano view. Friendly service. The receptionist was super nice. Comfortable and clean room. A/c and hot showers. Nice breakfast. Walking distance to lots of restaurants. 10/10

Gem of a place. Boutique luxury at an affordable price. The bathrooms felt luxurious, modern, and clean. The bed was nice. The A/C was strong. Staff was friendly and spoke English. The breakfast was good. It’s in town and walkable to all of the restaurants and shops. Fast WiFi and free parking.

Although we only spent one night as we were passing through on our way to Tamarindo, but we had a great time. They have all the amenities needed at this small hotel. Checking in was great with Fabricio! Overall, lovely hotel, close to restaurants and shops. Great up close and personal view of the volcano!

Truly wonderful place to stay. Convenient to walk to restaurants in town, but quiet and secluded. Daniel at the front desk is an exceptional host! He has excellent local knowledge and made some great recommendations. All of the staff here made us feel welcome.

Located in a good quiet place near the centroof La Fortuna. The rooms are bug and clean. The thing that was outstanding is the service, especially of the manager Josue - he listened to our traveling plans , added info from his experience and listened to our issues.

Maxi Palí in La Fortuna is a convenient supermarket for travelers visiting the area. It offers a wide variety of items, from groceries to electronics, making it a one-stop shop for all your needs. The store has secured parking and helpful staff, providing a pleasant shopping experience. Customers appreciate the reasonable prices and great selection of products, including fresh meat, fruits, and electronics.
The best Supermarket in all Costa Rica. Affordable prices. Real prices against the tourist super market. Personal supermarket rate: 10.0 Product with qualities.

Prices are nice compared to the nearby resorts and the closer stores. Liquor was cheap. But mixers were sparse.
Ben W — Google review
most employees are too lazy to work Fifteen people are lined up with only one open cash register and wait 45 minutes. There's only one cashier. The others just stand around and play with their cell phones. The woman calls the employees standing around for help, but no one opens the door for more. The work ethic at Maxi Pali is extremely depressing. If I were the boss I would immediately fire everyone except the one who worked at the cash register

Plenty of safe parking. Has more variaty then any other supermarket in town. Very good on prices. Also has a pharmacy inside the store with really low prices.

Horrible service by the manager with glasses and green eyes. I asked her for help to find diapers and she dismissed me and walked away. I couldn't believe it. I saw her upon paying for my items and told her it was a bad service and if she was mad or something to which she answered yes. Surprised she is managing anything with that type of unacceptable service. Go elsewhere, people are general very friendly in LaFortuna.

La Fortuna Butterfly Garden, located in the rural town of El Castillo, is a must-visit for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. The garden is home to a diverse array of butterflies, frogs, and other animals. Visitors can explore the well-maintained rainforest trails with the guidance of knowledgeable staff who provide insights into the butterflies' life cycle. Guests have raved about their experiences, praising the beautiful and unique variety of butterflies as well as the informative and friendly guides.
What a fun time with the guide, a truly wonderful full family experience. Trying new fruits with a very informative guide with a great sense of humor made the time very enjoyable. Inside the Butterfly House you will find an abundance of beautiful butterflies, all types, and stages of development. He then brought us out fresh homemade juices as we walked around and enjoyed the plants and butterflies. Highly recommend this to anyone visiting La Fortuna.
Jakob W — Google review
We randomly found this place on Google Maps and had a little time to spare. The worker walked us into the butterfly sanctuary let us loose to walk around. We were left alone to explore and enjoy the many different species of butterfly flying around. The worker did pop back in and give a little information but this is more of an enjoy in your own experience. Also on property is a small garden that has a large variety of fruit trees to see. After you are welcome to get a “free” (included in the admission price) smoothie. Definitely worth spending 30 min to an hour here.
Braden K — Google review
Our kids have are sensitive to sensory overload and crowds. Both or 3 and 6 year old had a great time exploring the garden and learning about the life cycle of butterflies. Great 30-60 minute experience of nature and delicious smoothies in a calming environment with friendly staff.

Lovely little place, the butterfly garden is so pretty and there are a lot of different species flying around. There’s also a garden outside with lots of fruit trees. Nazareno was so nice, he explained a little bit about the butterflies and showed us some chrysalis, and then left us on our own for a while to just enjoy. And he made me the most delicious pineapple smoothie 🫶🏼

We just visited and it was amazing! The guy was very nice and informative and gave us a very thorough tour of the butterfly garden and fruit trees. He pointed out the caterpillars and pupas. He showed us the different fruit treees and cut up some fresh fruit right off the tree! He even made us some juice! He was passionate and knowledgeable and very kind! Highly recommend!

Argi was an amazing guide! We just showed up and he took us for a tour. His energy is so contagious you cannot stop laughing at his jokes and faces. This magical fruit garden where you can try and smell everything. Very educative. Butterflies dances are wonderful. Smoothie at the end feels so refreshing!! Would go back anytime
Julian Q — Google review
My girlfriend and I found this place randomly after completing some activities earlier in the day. We were greeted by Lola the dog, Carmelo the gray tabby cat and Argi, the worker there who absolutely loves his job. He gave us a drink of our choosing before we started the tour, we chose the pineapple drink and we were not disappointed. Argi then showed us the enclosed garden area where there were so many species of butterflies flying around and he explained which ones there are and what makes them special. Our personal favorite was the one that had the owl eyes and snake head pattern on the outer wing. After we got our fix of butterflies, Argi walked us through the garden where the tropical fruits were. Argi explained which fruits were what and also let us try some right off of the branches, all the while, Carmelo was following us playing as a second tour guide. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and Argi was a great tour guide and is an amazing asset to the company.

During my travels, I had a seamless experience with the Banco Nacional ATM. It allowed me to withdraw cash without any hassle, although it only dispensed 10,000 colones notes and transactions were limited to that currency. What truly amazed me was the absence of fees when using my European card; in fact, I experienced zero charges while converting Canadian dollars to colones with my Wealthsimple Mastercard!
I got LITERALLY zero fees from canadian to colones! Using wealthsimple master card! A REAL ZERO FEES!! First in a lifetime i dont know what happened.
Charle-Edward C — Google review
ATM worked fine. Only could withdraw in colones and only 10k notes, but cash was received with no issues, and was not charged a fee on a European card.
Sarah K — Google review
Avoid the ATM. Actually I recommend avoiding the entire bank altogether. I never received over $400 that was taken out of my account. I spoke with two different people at Banco Nacional who offered zero assistance and told me I needed to straighten it out with my own bank. I’ve wasted way too much time disputing this claim.
Lane B — Google review
Tried to make an ATM withdrawal. Didn't go through due to "insufficient funds". An hour later got a notification from my bank that the amount *was* withdrawn from my bank. My sister-in-law had the exact same problem. She tried to talk to Banco National and they just laughed at her.
Bruce B — Google review
Tried to make a withdrawal with both my dad and my aunt. Was met with an error message at the end, canceled the transaction, received no money, but money was still taken out of both of their accounts (despite using different banking cards). When my aunt tried to dispute it with the bank, they were rude and laughed at her saying it was not their problem. Based on the reviews of this happening to others, this bank is clearly a scam and should not even be legal.
Jenny B — Google review
DO NOT GO TO THIS BANK! ATM machine did not work. I could not withdraw any cash but the amount has been taken from my bank account. Reading the comments below, I realised that this has been happening for a while. It’s the responsibility of the bank to repair the machine.
Elza E — Google review
Literally one of the worst and slowest banks in the nation if not the entire world it's almost comical. You can spend 3 hours in there trying to do one simple task like change money. The comedy is they actually think they're professional. But they should be wearing clown suits with big shoes and big red noses.
Tony S — Google review
ATM gave no indication of fees or withdrawal limits. Hubby and I tried to withdraw different amounts in an effort to figure out if there was one. We were finally able to withdraw 130k colones as max amount. But unfortunately, in the process of trying several times, the ATM withdrew money from our accounts without dispensing cash. So now we have to try to get back about $800. Only way I found out was through my bank's email notification. So make sure you set and check your bank notifications.

Moto Rental La Fortuna offers a variety of options for renting motos and scooters, with prices ranging from $10 per hour to $50 per day. A voucher with a card can cover the deposit of $200. Visitors have enjoyed scenic trips through the mountains, encountering wildlife and enjoying favorable weather conditions. While some suggest that English-speaking guides would enhance the experience, others recommend taking the Side by Side Buggy for added comfort and better photo opportunities during the drive.
Really nice trip through the mountains. Great views guaranteed! We also saw a few animals and we were really lucky with the weather. The guide was also very nice and pleasant. Would be cool if he could speak English. We were 4 people in the whole tour so two vehicles following the guide. Recommendation: take the Side by Side Buggy. The Seats are really comfortable and also to take pictures during the drive it’s the better choice. In general more fun to drive with especially if your are two persons. Another advantage - no helmet needed = better view and not so hot

We rented the bike for 2 days and everything went smoothly. The lady who rented it to us was very friendly. We were considering going here because of the bad reviews, but we gave them a chance and I believe that they're trying to make the business better. Taking a video when you receive a vehicle is recommended for any rental. It's gonna save you lots of time and trouble when you return it.
Hà N — Google review
Overall, I was pretty happy with this place though there are some caveats that you should know about. Make sure to bring your driver's license. You do not need a motorcycle license even for moto, but you do need a regular driver's license for all of the options. We rented the motorcycles for 24 hours to go to two places specifically, Castillo and Nuevo Arenal. Both of these places are around the lake, just in different spots, both were very beautiful in their own way. The motos were in good condition, both aesthetically and mechanically. For 24 hours it costs $70 for a 150cc, manual moto. For most people, it would probably make sense to rent the scooter instead because you're also getting 150cc but for $50. So here are some caveats. The distance / locations that you're allowed to go are quite limited for example to the West you are not allowed to go past Nuevo Arenal and to the east you're not even allowed to go past the town limits. The purpose of these bikes is just to see the town itself and go to different main tourist attractions in the area. The second caveat is that if you damage any parts of the bike, even slightly, you will be expected to buy new parts. I dropped the bike one time and it ended up costing me an extra $210 to replace various parts. The owners take a very good look at the bike upon return, so when they ask you to take video beforehand, I would take it seriously. The contract is also pretty clear that any damage you go to the bike you will be responsible for so if you total the scooter you will be out $3,000 at the total the motorcycle you'll be out $4,500. Any hospital related injuries sustained from riding they will cover. Overall, I think that the couple are honest and the rentals are well maintained. However I would only rent from them if I were confident that I would not damage any of their rentals.

We had no booking, just walked in and asked if there was availability. Paco sorted us out with no hassles, no bartering. He was a really good guide as well. After being in la fortuna a couple days, we'd seen all the sights and just wanted some fast paced ATV driving, and he delivered it. Double checking every now and then to ensure we were happy. Awesome experience, 12/10 rating from the entire group

Great area to ride motor bikes. Lady was very nice and even gave us a little extra time. Scooters are in good condition. There are two places in town however this place offers the same quality for less money. If you can ride a moto dont miss out in this beautiful area.

We had a really good experience with Moto Rental. We rented 4 atvs and 1 side by side. The guides were great and the equipment great also. Two of us had never ridden at all and were very much at home on the entire ride after the guides told them what they needed to know. Just be safe, treat the bikes with respect and listen and follow the guides lead and you will have a great time taking in a lot of great scenery during the ride.

Soda 5 Tejas is a delightful gem in La Fortuna that offers an authentic taste of local cuisine. This charming eatery, located conveniently across from a bustling gas station, features outdoor seating that provides a surprisingly tranquil atmosphere. The menu boasts generous portions at budget-friendly prices, making it perfect for travelers looking to indulge without breaking the bank.
It was the cheapest meal I had in Costa Rica but it ranks among the best rivaling those that cost 2-3 times. The fish is seasoned well with excellent caramelization and good pepper. I’ll likely return.

This was one of the first Sodas my family tried in La Fortuna, and possibly one of our favorites! The food is delicious & filling. With my meal I had Cas Fresca (Cas Juice) with ginger & cream, which is absolutely amazing & authentic. The staff spoke very little English but were patient & kind! This soda is right across the street from a busy gas station and seating is outdoors, yet the experience felt private & quiet! Next door is a cute market. This Soda was affordable, walkable, and worth it! 😄

This place was very good and the price is on the cheaper end since it’s a soda. 5000crc for the food and also fruta. The owners didn’t speak English but are friendly! I recommend it if you’re on a budget.

The Casado dish is really good and super copious! I had it with a Cas juice and both tasted really great. I only paid 5000 for the drink and the plate. The location is central which is perfect although it is on the street in front of a gas station but that doesn’t really matter. The owners are a very sweet couple and even offered to make me a vegetarian plate if I needed you won’t be disappointed!

Pura Vibra Hostel is a welcoming and relaxed accommodation in La Fortuna, perfect for backpackers looking for an unforgettable experience. The hostel offers a friendly and considerate atmosphere, with clean kitchen and bathroom facilities. The dorms are quiet and equipped with individual fans. Guests can enjoy the well-equipped kitchen and common area with games and a ping-pong table. The helpful staff can assist in planning activities and arranging tours. Additionally, the central location provides easy access to explore the area.
My favorite hostel in La Fortuna. tucked away nicely in the back of the city against the jungle, you experience quiet serene living with a beautiful stream running through the property. Everything is 5-10min walk, the showers are very hot, the beds are comfortable with full privacy curtains, and a good kitchen to cook your own meals. My only recommendations would be to modify the common area by closing the ping pong table, reducing the giant shelving unit by half the depth so the space can flow much more and have significant more space. All in all, this is a the perfect quiet hostel for those traveling on a budget and looking for good people who don’t party! Also a very female friendly hostel.
Tyler V — Google review
Was an overall great experience. Wonderful price for what you get especially the shared air-conditioned rooms. The guy who tends to work the night shifts can be a little unfriendly. Expect the lights to get turned off at the outside area at 9:45 with no heads up. Along with the kitchen at 9 PM. Definitely a quieter hostel Could see being great for a little bit of an older group. But for 20-year-old’s 945 lights off seems a little bit early.
Marcus M — Google review
I went to look at the hostel to book for the following night, rooms and common areas seemed fine. Reserved my dorm room and went back the following day to no answer at the gate. There is no doorbell or way to let someone know you are there. I spent ages in the hot sun, knocking and waiting for someone to come. I had to give up in the end and go to another hostel which is a shame. EDIT: they called me a liar in the reply below. I’m still in la fortuna so I’ll happy come up and show you where I was waiting. Why would I lie???? Ridiculous. I said to the guy who booked me in that I was changing hostels, he didn’t mention that you can’t come to the hostel at certain times. Not a good way to run a business.

I stayed in the female dorm with my teen daughter. This hostel is simple and clean (bathrooms and floors are cleaned professionally daily). It gave us a great home base to have adventures from, and we saved so much on lodging that we were able to do a LOT more fun stuff. Hostel staff booked tours, breakfast nearby, and transport to our next location without any problem, and all the services they connected us to were very professional, fairly priced, and safe. This is a perfect option if you are looking for: Affordability Cleanliness Peaceful and quiet environment Simplicity Easy access to town and adventure activities This hostel is not for you if you prefer: A highly social environment, parties Lots of bedroom space Luxury accommodations You may have to ask for things you need or want, but people here are happy to help. We did get our own sponge and hand towel in town because we used the kitchen a lot (a total of $3.50 usd). The kitchen is clean and has basic cooking tools. I recommend planning simple meals and bring your own seasonings and oils, as well as coffee and tea. There are lots of high end restaurants nearby but also many "sodas", small, affordable, local joints with really good food. Neighborhood feels very safe and quiet. The back porch and yard are so pleasant for relaxing or working, and there is a nice little yoga space.
Suzanne M — Google review
The hostel is very outdated: Mold on the air conditioning and in the bathroom. The floor is like a building site and very dirty. There was also an ant infestation in the private room. Suitcase, backpack and bed were covers with little animals. As a result, the service was not helpful and we only got our money back after a long wait and many discussions.
Emilia A — Google review
One of the best hostels I've stayed in Centroamérica. Not only do dorms have a bathroom but also every bed has curtains, lights, a little fan and a socket! Ana is always willing to help and give you good advice about places and how to get there. Be careful with their prices. I felt like I was scammed. Not sure if it was the case of water that they overcharged or a tiny Hagen Daz. But I ended up paying 2 or 3 times more than I would pay back in the states. My guess is the case of water. You are better off buying individual water bottles

If you're dreaming of an unforgettable adventure in Costa Rica, look no further than Tropical Paradise Tours Costa Rica. This tour company offers a truly enchanting experience that goes beyond the typical tourist attractions. During a recent family vacation, we embarked on an incredible two-part journey featuring a sloth tour at Mariolas Trail and the breathtaking La Fortuna waterfall. Our private guide, Luis Rivera, was nothing short of exceptional—his extensive knowledge and infectious enthusiasm made our day one for the books.
I came to Costa Rica for a family vacation, which included a two-part tour: sloth tour (at Mariolas Trail) and La Fortuna waterfall tour. To say our private tour guide Luis Rivera was exceptional would be a huge understatement. He was a fantastic tour guide with a wealth of knowledge, a great, friendly personality, and a clearly evident passion for what he does and where he lives. He made the entire day one of the highlights of the entire trip! I highly recommend booking through this company, and making a private tour reservation with Luis! Worth every penny. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Best tour company!! I communicated with the owner Rebecca Gomez weeks before my family and I arrived in Costa Rica and she was incredibly helpful, responsive, and friendly from the moment I contacted her. She arranged a whole series of tours for us and everything was managed so well. We even got to go on a private tour with Rebecca herself and she was extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and Costa Rican culture and history. We also got to see a ton of animals and birds- our time in La Fortuna was awesome from start to finish thanks to Tropical Paradise Tours! Gracias Rebecca- pura vida!

I was very, very nervous and she was amazing at calming me down and making my experience fun.

Such a nice place! They were so helpful since the first time I contacted them, responding fast and being so nice. They took our 4 year old kid to have fun with zip lines. Not many companies do that and it’s a putty as they are the ones enjoying the most. They are very professional and you feel safe all the time. The circuit is very nice and fun.

Good time, knowledgable guides. We didn’t get there at your time, found local guide for low cost for three of us. Was intimate and learned a lot. If I returned again, I may not get a guide again, but for local knowledge of Flora and Fauna was worth it.

They were very accommodating . We booked last second. Not minute but literally second. We had a blast on the zipline over la fortuna waterfall and loved the baldi hot springs.

This was my first time ziplining and the staff here was great. They are really knowledgeable and I felt completely safe and had tons of fun.

Area 360 Canyoning Arenal offers an exhilarating adventure that goes beyond just rappelling down waterfalls. The stunning location and professional yet friendly guides ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. The tour begins with a scenic hike to the breathtaking waterfalls, where knowledgeable guides provide insights into the surrounding flora. Even those with fears or physical limitations are well taken care of by the supportive guides.
Orlando, Gimi, Carlos, and Diago are excellent guides. We thoroughly enjoyed our rafting and canyoning experience. I highly recommend them.

I totally reccomend, we chose rafting and had so much fun with our instructor Andy! It was all so well organized, safe and adventurous at the same time. Thank you for the great experience!

This is as such an amazing tour!! It starts out with a beautiful hike down to the amazing waterfalls. As you walk down the guides are so knowledgeable and taught us about the plants and trees in the souranding area. Once we got to the waterfalls, I am afraid of heights but our wonderful guide Talaman helped me calm down by walking me step by step. Made me feel confident and safe. All the guides are extremely helpful, friendly and of course fun. I had such a great adventure today! I highly recommend this tour for anyone coming to visit Costa Rica!

Excellent experience, in the bus Mario, our bus guide for the ~40 minute ride to the river talked a lot about the surrounding areas. We did a rafting tour and our boat leader Orlando was great too. He really knew about the river, when it's the best time to go and when to wait for the current. He also gave us a lot of tips about la fortuna, surrounding areas and activities. If you wanna go rafting this is the place and I'm sure the other activities are good too!

This canyoning tour gives you so much more then just rappelling down waterfalls. First of all the place is stunning, second of all the staff and guides are very professional and in the same time friendly and fun! There is notthing to worry about, if you will be nervous as I was, the guides will make you feel very safe. I have some small problems with my back, but my guide Warner Talamanca was especially good at explaining it step by step, without feeling hurried - They know that they are doing! It is an amazing felling to rappel down the big cold waterfalls and finish in the HOT river water. Definitely worth the money - YOU will not miss this experience.

The team was AMAZING. Professional, knowledgeable and sooo much fun. It was so much more than rappelling and rafting(which in itself was Fabulous!). Estaban was our main man on rappelling and Warner Tala on rafting. We, my two adult children and I, were so blessed to be with them both all day. Passionate people are the best to try something new with. When they found out it was my 50th birthday they presented me with a cake (above and beyond)!! The food/drinks were delicious, fruit, an amazing organic meal, coffee and a demo on sugar cane extraction then finished off with a tour of the farm. You will not be disappointed booking with this company 💖 I can't thank them enough for all the great memories.
