La Parrilla de Maria Bonita is a steakhouse restaurant located in the heart of the historic city center. The cuisine includes Lebanese, Grill, Latin, and Mediterranean flavors. The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic dinner or party with friends. David was an excellent server who spoke good English and was attentive to our needs. Our meal was delicious and we really enjoyed ourselves. La Parrilla de Maria Bonita is definitely worth trying out!
We went last year while in Costa Rica and came back again this year, it was just as delicious as we remembered. We asked for the grill platter as we didn't see it on on the menu anymore and they brought it!
Sara P — Google review
Great food that was unique and delicious. Great service and friendly staff. David was our waiter and made the experience great! We ordered steak, ribs, chicken, and burgers… and all were amazing.

The atmosphere, food and service was amazing. Henry and Nela was very kind and accommodating. Absolutely love this place. Mucho Bueno!

David made fantastic coffee and cocktails. Food was delicious and service was great. Would definitely come back
Sarah V — Google review
I would like to start with a positive review : The restaurant is located in the center of the town. One thing I would like to mention that the manager of the cafe told us that service fee is not considered tips. However based on our research and when we asked other places service fee is considered tips. Plus taxes . So don’t be fooled ! The place is not designed to have guest during the rainy season. It was pouring and we had to move the table several times. Eventually we moved to another table( still had few drops here and there). We were excited about the food but that disappointed us as well. There were limited choices of dishes. one dish carpaccio that was good the rest of the food was very dry( meat), ceviche ( watery), drinks were very expensive( the quality and service doesn’t align). And we paid around $150 for the table of 4 with only 1 main dish and 3 appetizers. I don’t recommend to go there unless you don’t have any other choices. But there are multiple choices. We went to another place and were much surprised by the quality, prices, attitude: I would highly recommend to visit Cafe Rest Raul Costano Fortuna. There is a nice view, wonderful food, and police staff.
O G — Google review
Food was good, but not great. When you think about grilling you think about the kiss of fire that the grill gives to the meat, and here that was missing. Felt like they punched the meat and then served it. Service was good!! The cocktails were a little toned down. Whenever you see certain ingredients in the cocktail description you expect that flavour to be very present. It was not the case. The price point for the items here was not low, so it just feels like the food was not matching that point.
Gabriel R — Google review
Maria Bonita has amazing food, fantastic drinks and great service! Daniel was our server, and he had great recommendations. If you come from US and want steak, you will be disappointed. I had the Buffalo Tenderloin, and it was cooked to perfection.

Chocolate shop
Chocolate Fusión is a delightful haven for sweet lovers located near the central park of La Fortuna. This charming chocolate and pastry shop has garnered a reputation as a must-visit spot, offering an array of delectable treats including pastries, chocolate-dipped cookies, cheesecake slices, and indulgent drinks. The inviting atmosphere is enhanced by reliable air conditioning—an oasis in the tropical heat! For coffee enthusiasts, Chocolate Fusión serves up exceptional brews reminiscent of Melbourne's café culture.
Absolutely scrumptious! The amazing coffee experience starts with a friendly and smiley staff. They are prompt to answer questions about their exquisite coffee, amazing chocolate and delicious baked goods (repostería). If you don’t speak Spanish, they can help you in English or if you want to practice ordering in Spanish, they are very patient and helpful. If you care about good quality coffee beans and brew, you must come to this place. Cheers!
Rafael H — Google review
Beautiful shop, tasty treats—but not worth the price. We stopped into Chocolate Fusion for a sweet break and enjoyed the overall atmosphere. The coffee was solid, and the chocolates were good—but not $45-for-10-chocolates-and-two-drinks good. Everything looked beautiful and was clearly made with care, but the prices felt more like luxury branding than true value. If you’re looking for a small indulgence or a gift, it’s fine—but don’t come hungry.
Dana L — Google review
Seems like a place where you will find everything you’re looking for when it comes to chocolate, treats, pastries, and even coffee. They have ice cream and coffee as well as chocolates. I give it four stars only for the fact that the prices are a bit steep for the average Costa Rica. Other than that, excellent variety.
Johnny A — Google review
Nice coffee and dessert place. Very rich chocolate flavours and beatiful interior - although note it does get very busy throughout the day. Molten lava cake was great but they did not make it warm enough. Ice cream is also nice but nothing special. European prices
Ameer A — Google review
Me & my husband came here for our honeymoon and we fell in love with this place. Every morning we’d come in order a different coffee and play chess. The atmosphere is so calm and welcoming , there’s plenty of spots to sit and relax. They have games laid around everywhere , pastries, and ice cream. A selection of all different types of coffees and drinks as well. Yarirza always served us and we looked forward to seeing her every morning and saying hi! Her hospitality was always appreciated and she was very nice and has a welcoming smile. We highlight recommended you give Chocolate Fusion a try :)
Dalyna D — Google review
Lots of options. Stopped briefly to get a piece of chocolate cake and iced coffee. Very delicious. But the cake wasnt as good the next day, so you'll want to eat it fresh.
Amber C — Google review
Great place ! Coffee was delicious and the decor was super modern and adorable with board games at each table. Staff was polite and helpful! Would recommend !!

This is our favorite spot every time we travel to La Fortuna, the best coffee shop in the town if not, in the whole province. Friendly staff, fast service, and very clean. The pastry taste amazing give it a shot and thank me later! Highly recommended.

Supermarket
Mega Supermarket La Fortuna is a large, well-stocked supermarket near the bus terminal on the river road. It's a great place to stock up for your next long ride.
Much cheaper than at the "Super Christian" e.g. the same bag of crisps was just 1300 here compared to 2500. The place is pretty big with lots of fruits.
Esben E — Google review
Appears to be good value for money until you pay. Price on ticket displayed was more than 10% lower than price charged. When I queried they said it was because I was not a member. This is not apparent from any signage. Buyers beware. Cheaper in Super Rosvil.
C C — Google review
Signs (above head) were in Spanish and English which was nice. No AC so it can get hot there. Decent variety however we couldn't find coffee "socks"
Laura R — Google review
Pretty good market felt like open air. Not what you're used to in the US but hey when you're in Costa Rica Puerto Vida had most everything I needed even a few American potato chips.
Jerry H — Google review
Clean well stocked , get pretty much anything you need in the way of groceries
Kevin D — Google review
Costa Rica and Beer Our over 1 million fans have observed we are a beer connoisseur and love sampling the best beers on our global travels. You read about our birracles where we simply thought of una birra en Italia and it manifested into physical form by sheer thought alone. Read the story in our Natural Born Miracle Makers: Book One, and see it in our forthcoming thELight (tm) feature film starring Russell Brand and Camelia Crous Sadly, I give locally available Costa Rica beer (Imperial and Bavaria) a mediocre ranking for quality and price. Costa Rica is not a destination for lovers of high quality cerveza, birra, beer and piwo. Again, expect US/EU pricing or greater for mediocre quality and taste.
I Z — Google review
The supermarket is cheap and has a wide range of items. Everything can be found except for real bread. Definitely recommendable.
Leo A — Google review
Wide variety of goods. No airconditioning. Beware: if you buy beer in bootles, they give you a hard time when you return the bottles and don't buy a new one. Often they won't accept the empties. Looks like they are trying to make extra money at your expense.

Supermarket
Maxi Palí in La Fortuna is a convenient supermarket for travelers visiting the area. It offers a wide variety of items, from groceries to electronics, making it a one-stop shop for all your needs. The store has secured parking and helpful staff, providing a pleasant shopping experience. Customers appreciate the reasonable prices and great selection of products, including fresh meat, fruits, and electronics.
The best Supermarket in all Costa Rica. Affordable prices. Real prices against the tourist super market. Personal supermarket rate: 10.0 Product with qualities.
Caleb E — Google review
Prices are nice compared to the nearby resorts and the closer stores. Liquor was cheap. But mixers were sparse.
Ben W — Google review
most employees are too lazy to work Fifteen people are lined up with only one open cash register and wait 45 minutes. There's only one cashier. The others just stand around and play with their cell phones. The woman calls the employees standing around for help, but no one opens the door for more. The work ethic at Maxi Pali is extremely depressing. If I were the boss I would immediately fire everyone except the one who worked at the cash register
CR S — Google review
Plenty of safe parking. Has more variaty then any other supermarket in town. Very good on prices. Also has a pharmacy inside the store with really low prices.
Richard G — Google review

Horrible service by the manager with glasses and green eyes. I asked her for help to find diapers and she dismissed me and walked away. I couldn't believe it. I saw her upon paying for my items and told her it was a bad service and if she was mad or something to which she answered yes. Surprised she is managing anything with that type of unacceptable service. Go elsewhere, people are general very friendly in LaFortuna.

The Coffee & Chocolate Tour La Fortuna offers an educational and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Visitors can learn about the production processes of coffee and chocolate, interact with passionate locals, and gain insight into Costa Rica's main exports. The tour provides a glimpse into traditional methods of growing, harvesting, and processing coffee beans. With a focus on both education and hands-on experiences, participants have the opportunity to make their own coffee and chocolate while also sampling sugar cane shots.
We did the coffee chocolate and sloth tour. It was all great. Excellent tour guides that taught us all about the coffee and chocolate production. Sloth sightings were amazing! Guides helped you take pictures and get amazing views of the sloths. Looks like a cheesy roadside set up but was actually Great. We spent 4 hours and loved it!
Kristal B — Google review
Valeria was an amazing tour guide she was vey informative, friendly, and funny! It was very interesting and the chocolate and coffee was delicious!!! Would definitely recommend for all ages! We also got to try sugarcane and learned a lot about it!
Virginia S — Google review
We did a morning tour with Coffee & Chocolate Tour La Fortuna; it took about 2.5 hours and was wonderful ! Our guide was very knowledgeable and took us around the demo areas of coffee, cacao and sugarcane plants and how the beans / canes are processed. The demo areas have plants of a few different sizes bearing the coffee beans or the cacao fruits and we saw examples of harvesting stages, different stages of fermentation or roasting and grinding, and lastly got samples to taste. The coffee tour was very informative about I roasted, light, medium or dark roasted beans, how their aromas and caffeine contents vary and ended with the guide brewing a pot of coffee using a local drip set up. In the chocolate tour we got to taste some pre made chocolates and also made some ourselves by mixing ingredients like processed cacao powder, sugar, milk, additions like peanut butter etc. Lastly, during the sugarcane tour, he showed us how sugarcane stems are pressed to extract juice. Overall it was a very informative and engaging tour, and worth the time. We even saw a sloth hanging out in one of the tall nearby trees.
Sandeepa D — Google review
We did the coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane tour. It was about 2 hours. Our guide johnny was very friendly and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about all 3 items and got to try some tasty coffee and chocolate that he had made.

I highly recommend this tour! I came with our family of 5, 2 adults and kids ages 11,7 and a 10mo baby. We were also with my dad and uncle who are seniors and we all enjoyed it. It was very informative, we saw and learned a lot about different plants and fruits in the farm and about the process of making coffee and chocolate and even sugar syrup. My sons participated in all the different process and had a great time. The price of the tour is totally reasonable and you can also purchase different wines and chocolates there.
יולי ח — Google review
The coffee chocolate and sugar cane tour was all great. Excellent tour by Harold that taught us all about the coffee and chocolate production with so much passion. We had some coffee, tried chocolate and drank the sugar cane.

We had a fantastic time on the Coffee, Chocolate, and Sugar Cane Tour in La Fortuna. Our guides, Jason and Kathy, were extremely knowledgeable, engaging, and made the entire experience feel personal and enjoyable. Their passion for Costa Rican culture and tradition really brought the tour to life. Overall, it was a great experience and one I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.
Brian M — Google review
This was an incredible experience! I was thrilled to witness firsthand the processes of coffee and chocolate production. Having tasted chocolate from various sources, I can confidently say that the fresh, homemade chocolate I enjoyed here surpassed them all. The factory-processed chocolates I've had in the past simply cannot compare. The coffee was equally exceptional. Our knowledgeable guide provided valuable insights throughout the tour, ensuring I learned a great deal. This experience was truly enlightening and a highlight of my trip.

Supermarket Arenal offers a diverse selection of beers, including local craft brews and some international options. Visitors can enjoy their cold drinks on the store's patio. Customers appreciate the quick in-and-out shopping experience and friendly service at Supermarket Arenal.

Be careful with their prices. I felt like I was scammed. Not sure if it was the case of water that they overcharged or a tiny Hagen Daz. But I ended up paying 2 or 3 times more than I would pay back in the states. My guess is the case of water. You are better off buying individual water bottles
Dennys L — Google review
NO PRICE TAGS, OVERPRICED, BE CAREFUL! They sold tomato soup which had seal broken already. Went back within 10 minutes, but they refused to give a replacement. I had the bill with me also. Overpriced as well $16 for 8 bottle of water, $7 for soup! Prices are not displayed for any item. You get the idea right! Go somewhere else if you can. I have photos of bill and item taken. Let me try to post also. When I said I will complain the guy said go ahead🤔

Cianikal is a charming artist collective in La Fortuna, offering a variety of unique souvenirs and gifts created by local artists. The store features handcrafted silver rings, custom-made jewelry, handmade clothing, and an assortment of quirky knick-knacks. Visitors can also find small-batch chocolates, skincare products, wood items, and stickers. The space serves as a platform for multiple artists to showcase their work for sale and some even have their studios there.
Just got a custom made silver ring here for a very reasonable price. I wanted a polished outer side with the brushed look inside. I’d shown a few ideas to the lovely couple that runs the store and they got me all set up with the finished product in under two days! Very happy, I love it, girlfriend loves it- they’re fantastic! They also sell some beautiful hand made clothing and some really cool knick knacks as well! We bought necklaces made from bananas for our niece and nephew. It is worth spending money here rather than at the junky tourist stores. 5 stars for service and quality! Thank you!

Our group of 6 came and everyone left with something! A great mix of jewelry, t-shirts, art, and miscellaneous souvenirs made by local artisans! Was unique among many of the other gift shops in the area that everything within the shop was made by local artists. The owner was there and was super helpful with any of our questions and highlighted many of the great products within the shop. Would recommend to anyone looking to take a piece of Costa Rica home with them!
Tyler K — Google review
What a fantastic shop. Everything is handmade by local artisans, with a range of prices so there is truly something for every budget. I purchased this beautiful garnet ring, and had Sophie the on site jeweler custom make me a fire opal necklace with a super fast turnaround, I messaged her Sunday night about the piece and had it by Tuesday morning. Each piece was only $95 each which is a super fair price. If you’re looking for something other than jewelry, there’s beautiful prints, ceramics, leather goods, crocheted pieces, kitchenware, chocolate and more! It can be hard to find good souvenirs when traveling that aren’t just mass produced, so this place is definitely worth stopping by.

Market
Friday Feria Farmer's Market is a vibrant and popular weekend market in Costa Rica. It operates on Friday afternoon and evening, with fairy lights creating a magical atmosphere during the evening hours. The market reopens at 5 am the next morning and concludes around noon. Visitors can purchase fresh produce, homemade tortillas, cinnamon rolls, as well as a variety of items such as fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, natural remedies, homemade cakes, and other local products.
Everyone should know about this spot and visit (FRIDAY-only). Just past the mega super! A couple of dozen local vendors with great home grown, home cooked, and home made offerings. Samples are offered, prices are very fair. Use your best pantomime or phone to translate if you don't speak Spanish. We bought sweet and savory treats, a slab of fresh mountain cheese, and pounds of lychee-type fruit. You could easily shop for the week if you have an Airbnb as there is a fish monger and meats. Also, come hungry as there is a woman serving up a full luncheon and there are picnic table in back. So happy we came. All we bought in the photo (except the smoothies) cost less than 10 USD.

(Translated by Google) Very bad, they didn't even have ten tables, very expensive, the worst fair I have ever visited, so those farmers who came from Zarcero don't even make enough money for gasoline, expensive, little offer, too bad 😡 (Original) Muy mala no tenían ni diez mesas muy caro la peor feria que he visitado así esos agricultores que venían de zarcero no sacan ni para la gasolina caro poca oferta demasiado mala 😡

Love this shop!! I stopped here while browsing shops in La Fortuna and they had the cutest souvenirs. It is very clear that everything here is made with great care and attention. I bought a cute sticker and a beautiful necklace with rocks from the volcano on the pendant. Definitely stop by and support this small business if you’re in La Fortuna!

This is the best souvenir shop we found in La Fortuna. I am so glad we stumbled upon it after trying several others that had the same mass produced stuff over and over. This shop had a great selection of locally sourced and handmade items. We got unique coffees, flavored honey, ceramics, and Christmas ornaments. It’s a small shop, but you can probably find something special!
Sara M — Google review
The best local souvenirs in La Fortuna. Distinctive graphic design and local artist-made products.

Small pop up store right at the main Plaza in la Fortuna. Instead of the typical touristic "trashy" gifts, there you can buy beautiful crafts like cups, pictures or jewelry, all handmade by artesans of the area. The shopkeeper was super friendly.

I bought a tote bag and sticker from this shop about a week ago. I stupidly did not get a receipt but checked my banking card about 10 minutes later and the shop overcharged me by $20. When i went back to speak with the salesperson, she pulled up the receipt. It was there that i noticed she added other items to my purchase to make it more expensive. When i confronted her, she acted very nervous and just said she would refund/was sorry. I understand these shops want to make money, but scamming people trying to support your business is not the way to do it. I ended up returning everything. Ask for a receipt!

Loved this pop up shop! The owner was so sweet and explained where all the locally made items were from. It was nice to find locally and high quality items to remember La Fortuna by.

Fire. The stuff there is definitely high quality but like it’s veryyy expensive. Like, I bought a pin for like 5500 CRC ($11 US dollars).

An awesome local female-owned business with gorgeous gift ideas that are sustainably designed and produced. A small pop up shop well worth a visit. Great souvenirs all from La Fortuna.

Store
Souvenir la Fortuna del Arenal is a popular spot for travelers looking to take home unique items. Visitors have found a variety of products, although some consider them to be on the expensive side. However, it's still worth visiting for the diverse selection and opportunities to find special pieces. Additionally, tourists have had positive experiences with the staff, who are knowledgeable about the origins of the items and willing to offer recommendations for other activities in the area.
The ladies at this shop were super nice and helpful. I was able to find almost everything I needed. They even had some specials like buy 3 get 1 free on certain items. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re looking for things to gift or take back home.

It's a decent souvenir shop in central San José. Their store is not very big but they can satisfy your souvenir shopping needs. Don't forget to Hagley as the written prices are pretty jacked up.
Reza N — Google review
I had a wonderful experience shopping here. I met a clerk named Liset who spoke English and helped me to pick fair priced items to take home to friends and family. She informed me about the origins of the unique pieces. We got to talking and she also made some restaurant recommendations! What stood out to me was her concern for my safety as a solo traveler. She let me wait in the store past closing for my uber. She also charged my phone for me. I have a new friend if I'm ever back in Costa Rica and I will definitely recommend this shop to my friends when they travel here for its unique pieces, sale prices, and friendly service.

I first found this shop last summer and have taken my friends ever since. Very friendly staff and family-run business. There is a great variety of souvenirs to shop for and it is a one stop shop for everything you want to bring home to family and friends before heading home to the airport!

One of the only truly souvenir places that I could find. Nice staff. Spoke English well. Great deals! Not as expensive. Found some <$5 deals. Interesting items. Was open at 8pm on Tuesday!

Visitors can find beautiful handmade pieces at reasonable prices, making it the perfect place to pick up a unique souvenir. Whether you're looking for a small vase or pot to adorn your home, this charming store has something special for everyone.
If I have the right place (close to chocolate fusion), this has beautiful handmade, local, and reasonable art/pottery pieces to take it back home. I got a small souvenir of vase/pot for home.
Ruchika G — Google review
Buyer Beware! This souvenir shop had no sign on it but is in the same location as "Souvenirs Kenliz". The shop has lovely handmade textiles but they are not made in Costa Rica. Unfortunately the mother and daughter will tell you whatever you want to hear in order to get you to buy. My sister-in-law was told by the mother that the tapestry she bought was handmade in Costa Rica and handmade by herself, the mother. The daughter gave us one price and the mother kept trying to squeeze more money out of my sister-n-law. In the end she purchased the tapestry. On our way out I stopped in the lower level of the store and (I'm assuming the husband) told us their goods were from all over Central America. When we arrived back at our hotel we discovered the "Made in El Salvador" tag had not been removed. They didn't need to lie.
