The Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky is a renowned Bulgarian Orthodox church featuring stunning Neo-Byzantine architecture and an underground museum. Constructed between 1882 and 1912, it stands as one of the most significant landmarks in Sofia, honoring Russian soldiers who fought for Bulgaria's liberation from Turkish rule. This grand cathedral, named after a 13th-century Russian prince, is not only a place of worship but also a top photographic site in the city.
What a stunning cathedral! When the doors are open, step inside. Just make sure to do so respectfully. Yes, it's beautiful to look at, but it's still a working cathedral so keep voices down and know when NOT to take photos. Downstairs is a museum of icons. Near the cathedral in the park is a market with vendors selling Soviet-era trinkets and more.
Austin G — Google review
This place is stunning. The cathedral looks amazing, the entrance is free, but donations can be made, there are special boxes inside. Also, there is a small shop at the entrance, there you can buy souvenirs and candles. The place is not very crowded, we arrived in a Sunday evening and there were no issues. Definitely worth visiting when in Sofia.

Breathtaking 🙏😳🥰 I had tears in my eyes by just entering the door. We were walking outside the building, 2 police officers and security waved at us, showed us the door. The building outside is stunning already, but when you stepped inside, it's just take your breath away. Serene, quiet, no tourists We took a lot of pictures, searching for a little corner and pray🙏 I love it.

Sofia’s most iconic and grand cathedral, and its size combined with its stunning architecture gives it a truly commanding presence. Construction: Built between 1882 and 1912 to honor Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), which liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Architectural Style: Neo-Byzantine, with striking gold-plated domes and intricate frescoes inside. Capacity: Can accommodate up to 5,000 people, making it one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. Features: Lavish interior with marble columns, mosaics, icons, and a massive iconostasis. Significance: Serves as the patriarchal cathedral of Bulgaria, a national symbol of faith, history, and Bulgarian liberation.
Ivy N — Google review
Such a wonderful cathedral and the largest in the Balkans. It's Neo-Byzantine style is glamorous and admirable. The artwork and chandeliers were such an eyesight. The cathedral is a symbol of Sofia and must visit. There was no wait time during the week and no tickets. A small donation to light up a candle is a nice idea. The crowd was very low.

I was lucky enough to walk in during service and it was magical. There was a beautiful choir singing and the sound was spectacular. I was in tears. The building and the energy almost commands you to be present. The visitors were very respectful. A must visit. I would assume Saturday afternoon is when they have a service.
Lefteris M — Google review
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the city’s greatest landmarks and among the most impressive Orthodox cathedrals in the Balkans. Built between 1904 and 1912 in Neo-Byzantine style, it was dedicated to the Russian soldiers who helped free Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Its golden domes, visible from many parts of the city, create a majestic sight, especially under the soft afternoon light. Entry is free, though there’s a small fee for those wishing to take photos inside, where marble, alabaster, and beautifully aged frescoes adorn the space. Even just walking around it, it’s impossible not to be impressed by the monument’s scale and symbolism.
Luana B — Google review
Its interesting to see the difference between the different kind of cathedrals. However, other visitors not respecting the place makes it less of a nice experience. The place should be quiet and they ask to make no photos of the inside. However most visitors are loud and are constantly taking pictures and not watching where they are walking. A stronger enforcement from the church side would make it a more pleasant experience.

The National Palace of Culture (NDK) is an iconic building located in the heart of Sofia, Bulgaria. Established in 1981 as part of the state's 1300th birthday celebrations, this sprawling hexagonal structure hosts a variety of events including concerts, plays, and exhibitions. Designed by renowned Bulgarian architect Alexander Georgiev Barov, the building showcases socialist architecture with its sleek and minimalistic aesthetic, geometric lines, and imposing size. The surrounding gardens add to its historical significance.
We had a fantastic experience on the guided tour of the National Palace of Culture! The guide was knowledgeable and passionate, sharing fascinating facts about the building’s architecture, history, and impressive stage technology. Walking through the grand halls and learning about the cultural significance of the venue made me appreciate it even more. The tour was well-organized, engaging, and offered a unique behind-the-scenes look at one of Sofia’s most iconic landmarks. Highly recommended for anyone interested in architecture, culture, or simply looking to discover something new in the city!

Beautiful and impressive landmark in the heart of Sofia! The architecture is stunning, and the surrounding park is perfect for a relaxing walk. Often hosts concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events — a must-see if you’re visiting the city

If you like that Soviet Era architecture that is brutalist then this is your spot. On spring evening, May 2025, this buildings is among the ones lit up for the LUNAR light festival. Makes for an interesting juxtaposition of old and new. The park surrounding it is flat and filled with young skateboarders during the day and the young adult party goers at night, as the edges of the park are mostly bars and clubs. Overall, worth a visit for to quench your brutalist thirst.

Nice spot for local Christmas market. The decorations towards the Christmas period is absolutely stunning, focussing on eco-friendly stuff. The markets are wide, close to 54 stalls and the pricing is very nominal.

Better to visit in the evening as the lighting makes the experience far better (but no entrance inside). Also there’s another sight underneath the place.

I watched the Alice in Wonderland circus show on March 31st, 2025. Finding the ticket booth proved very difficult in the rain if you don't read the Russian alphabet! I expected it to be a New circus. But I got disappointed. Pumping pop music, dancers who had fun but honestly there was no theme or storyline. Just some circus performers showing off their traditional skills. I liked the 3 guys on the trampoline and the huge white dress show. Many kids in the audience. Worst of all the signage to find my seat needs some serious improvements. I looked for hall/entrance 18. What a waste of time. And no staff to ask for directions.

The Ivan Vazov National Theater, an impressive neoclassical structure, has been a cultural hub in Bulgaria since its opening in 1907. Despite sustaining damage during World War II, the theater was restored and continues to offer a diverse program of stage productions. Situated at the heart of the city and surrounded by the serene city garden, it captivates tourists not only with its captivating performances but also with its charming architecture and tranquil ambiance.
Just visited the National Theater Ivan Vazov, and the whole area around it is such a perfect chill spot! The theater’s architecture really reminded me of the Bolshoi — super grand and elegant. I didn’t go inside, but just being there was a vibe. The park in front is awesome for sitting, people-watching, and just taking in the city. There are plenty of comfy benches under nice trees, and restaurants around to grab food and enjoy a picnic. The water fountain keeps the area nice and breezy, even during the hot peak times. If you're exploring Sofia, it's definitely worth stopping by to relax and enjoy the atmosphere!

National Museum in Sofia – A Fascinating Stop in the Heart of the City We visited the National Museum in Sofia, right in the middle of the city, and it was such a fascinating experience. I even heard that parts of the collection are made from gold, which was incredible to see up close. I’m so glad we made the trip here. The museum really helps you understand the depth of Bulgaria’s history and culture, and the city itself is beautiful to explore on foot. ✨ Final thought: If you’re in Sofia, take the time to walk around and don’t miss the museum. It’s both educational and awe-inspiring.

Even just visiting the exterior, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre is one of the city’s most charming landmarks. Built in a neoclassical style, it’s an architectural gem and considered one of the most important and beautiful buildings in Sofia. The façade, with six sturdy columns supporting the triangular pediment where Apollo and the Muses of the Arts are depicted, is truly magnificent. The theatre sits across from a lovely park with fountains, making it the perfect spot for photos or a relaxing break.

This is the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the oldest and most prestigious theatre in Bulgaria, founded in 1904. Its elegant neoclassical façade with the iconic twin towers makes it one of Sofia’s most photographed landmarks. The theatre is home to Bulgaria’s top actors and offers world-class drama performances, while the surrounding City Garden is a favorite spot for locals to relax.

Nestled on the outskirts of Sofia, Boyana Church is a captivating medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church that has earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This charming structure boasts stunning frescoes from the 11th to 13th centuries, showcasing some of the finest examples of Bulgarian medieval artistry. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions like Boyana Lake and the Dendarium, which offers picturesque walking paths and family-friendly facilities.
This historic monument has been well preserved and maintained. It feels calm due to the park and the trees around. You need to buy a ticket to enter inside and view the frescoes. Although they are from 1255, it's really well preserved. Once you enter inside the small church with a ticket, you have 10 minutes to admire the artwork. The basic amenities are well maintained. The only annoying thing was that there was no way to regulate the entry and one had to stand in the queue. There are quite a lot of buses that ply to the church everyday and are well connected with public transport.
Arun K — Google review
There’s not much to see at all… until you enter inside the church (for a fee)! To be honest, I don’t think I would have been able to appreciate as much the inside as well, if we didn’t have an actual tour guide to explain things. Do note that the interior of the church is small. And entry inside is timed by the caretaker to 8~10minutes per group. The main attractions were seeing the three parts of the church and the many beautiful frescoes inside which told so many different stories - interestingly, both Biblical and of the local history of the region. The small church itself is located in the compound of a botanical garden, but the garden itself didn’t seem to have anything unique about it. Boyana Church is one of Bulgaria’s 10 UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Sites.
ARBN — Google review
WOW. Absolutely stunning! Talk to the kind, gentle and knowledgeable guide inside and he will explain the frescos, the history, the significance. You're supposed to only get 10 minutes, but as there was no one waiting to come in we chatted for about half an hour. An absolute gem of a place and we'll worth a short ride out of the city. The area is lovely to walk and perhaps head up the mountain too.
Rick — Google review
Boyana Church located at the quiet place around 10 min drive from the Sofia city center! Its historically importance makes it unique and recognized by UNSECO! Its entrance allowed only 8-10 people for 10 min and then the cycles repeat. It’s small and decent! Not that recommended if you don’t have much time in Sofia!
Frank Y — Google review
Peaceful and beautiful monastery This monastery is truly a hidden gem – peaceful, green, and with a calming, almost spiritual atmosphere. The architecture is stunning, and the whole area feels very well preserved and serene. Just behind the monastery, there’s also a trail that leads into the forest – a perfect spot for a quiet walk in nature. Highly recommended for anyone looking to relax, reflect, and enjoy some beautiful scenery.
Eyal L — Google review
The Boyana Church is quite small, but truly impressive. It’s amazing to see 13th-century frescoes still so well preserved. Entry is limited to 10 people at a time, so there’s usually a short wait and the visit itself is only a few minutes. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed, which is a pity since the frescoes are beautiful. The surrounding park is also lovely, with a couple of sequoia trees adding to the atmosphere.
Simone S — Google review
Recommend to not visit this church. I have nothing against any religious house, but this church has unfortunately been turned into a tourist attraction. And imagine the extention of the idiocy of the church managers: they put written message on the ticket office that 'Today the tickets are sold out'. Even if we were there during the working hours posted here on google. I asked them what this means? Does this mean that we cannot enter the church? Of course I got the answer yes. I explained to them that I have never seen this kind of rudeness anywhere in the whole world. Sold out tickets for entering a church!!! This is not a cinema projection, nor a theater performance, nor a concert. Unfortunately and for the sake of truth, they have turned this church into a money-printing machine. The managers will pay for their Christian sin with interest. For sure 🙏
Svetlana L — Google review
Very small, very old church. You can only visit for 10 minutes. It’s full of beautiful frescoes - no photos allowed. An entry fee applies (it was 12 leva each for us).

A fun one, especially for kiddos and everyone interested in topics about animals and the natural world. The only disadvantage is that the museum is pretty old school and hasn't been renovated in a while. The information plates have been the same ever since my first visit there some 15 years ago.

Very well organized and complete. It carries decades of detailed collection, curation and preservation. Someone would say that the interior looks aged and worn but actually it is a part of it's charm. Saint George Rotunda Church, located in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a significant historical site as it is the oldest surviving church in the city and one of the oldest in Europe. Dating back to the 4th century, during the Roman period when Christianity was recognized as an equal religion in the Empire, this cylindrical red brick church with a frescoed dome holds great architectural and cultural importance. It is situated near remnants that suggest there may have been another building at its location initially.
A beautiful church in the center of Sofia. This is the oldest building in the city, dating back to the 4th century. It is built with red bricks from the outside. Although it is very old, the church is well preserved. It's nicely decorated inside, but it's a bit cramped and can't hold more people at once. There is no entrance fee. Inside you can buy cheap souvenirs.
Spase M — Google review
Really interesting the way it is situated in the court yard of the government buildings. Very rich and elegant inside in spite of what it looks like outside. I would say, go if you have time, if not, you can place it lower on the priority list. So many amazing museums and art galleries to visit so plan your time well!
Phae D — Google review
The Church of St. George is a truly remarkable place, the oldest preserved monument in Sofia. It is a small red-brick, circular church dating back to Roman times, set among modern buildings, which makes it even more fascinating. Inside, you can admire beautiful Byzantine frescoes from different periods, ranging from the 4th to the 14th century, well preserved and rich in detail. The atmosphere is intimate and spiritual, giving you the feeling of stepping back in time. It is easy to visit, with free entrance, and is located right in the city center, just a short walk from St. Nedelya Cathedral. An unmissable stop for anyone visiting Sofia, both for its historical significance and its unique beauty.

Lasting for over 1700 years, this church surrounded by ruins, is such a remarkable place to stop by. It's considered the oldest building in Sofia ! Definitely worth the visit and receiving blessings of St.George 🙏🏼

The Rotunda of St. George is one of the oldest buildings in the city, dating back to the 4th century. Its red-brick construction, circular plan on a square base and roughly 13-metre dome create a compact volume rich in history. I really enjoyed how this small building stands out within the urban context, lending the visit a sense of depth.
Luana B — Google review
The Church of Saint George (Bulgarian: Ротонда „Свети Георги“, romanized: Rotonda "Sveti Georgi") is a Late Antique red brick rotunda in Sofia, Bulgaria. Built in the early 4th century as Roman baths, it became a church inside the walls of Serdica, capital of ancient Dacia Mediterranea during the Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire.[1] The Early Christian church is considered the oldest building in modern Sofia and belongs to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The building, a cylindrical domed structure built on a square base, is famous for the 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-century frescoes inside the central dome. Three layers of frescoes have been discovered, the earliest dating back to the 10th century. Frescoes of 22 prophets over 2 metres tall crown the dome. Painted over during the Ottoman period, when the building was used as a mosque, these frescoes were only uncovered and restored in the 20th century.

The Central Mosque of Sofia, also known as Banya Bashi Mosque, is a stunning architectural gem dating back to the 16th-century Ottoman Empire. Situated near thermal baths, it serves as a significant monument to Bulgaria's Islamic history and Ottoman past.
Visitors to the mosque are always welcome, and it provides an opportunity to learn more about Bulgaria's Muslim community and the rich cultural diversity of Sofia. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or just looking for a peaceful spot to reflect, the Central Mosque of Sofia is a must-visit site. As someone with a deep appreciation for architecture, Banya Bashi Mosque completely captivated me. The structure is modest in size, but its design speaks volumes. The blend of stone and red brickwork, the perfectly proportioned dome, and the graceful minaret give the mosque a timeless elegance that holds its own in Sofia’s urban center. Inside, I was struck by the vivid red and blue frescoes—bold, geometric, and full of character. They add warmth and energy to the interior without overwhelming it. The way the natural light filters in and dances over the curved walls and arches brings the entire space to life. An especially fascinating detail: the mosque is built over natural thermal springs, and you can feel that subtle warmth underfoot—a quiet, living element in the architecture itself. This space is more than a historical site; it’s a masterpiece of form, color, and purpose. A must-visit for anyone who sees buildings as stories told in stone, light, and pattern.

Hey, we are Vicky 🇵🇪 and Malte 🇩🇪 from the travel blog Traveling Is Our Passion. For our full one-day Sofia itinerary, check out our blog! The Banya Bashi Mosque is one of the few active mosques in Sofia and a reminder of the city’s Ottoman past. Built in the 16th century, it’s still used for daily prayers today. The location makes it easy to visit since it’s right next to the Central Market Hall. Non-Muslim visitors can step inside outside of prayer times, but remember to dress respectfully. Even if you just admire it from the outside, the mosque adds an interesting layer to Sofia’s diverse cultural history.

Beautifully located mosque with a peaceful atmosphere. The surroundings are clean and pleasant, and the building looks stunning, especially in the evening when it’s beautifully illuminated. Definitely worth a stop if you’re exploring central Sofia.

It's very beautiful inside, fill with detailed, really recommend to visit when you go to Sofia, if you don't have any veil, you can borrow it from the mosque
Jatu R — Google review
The Banya Bashi Mosque is a fascinating remnant of Ottoman heritage in the city centre: built in the mid-16th century. The structure uses stone and brick, with a large central dome supported on a cubic base — a rare detail in the region. The name “Banya Bashi” (“many baths”) refers to the thermal springs running beneath the building, still visible through vents of steam in places.

Absolutely gorgeous. I visited as a single female and was nervous about how to enter, but it's very easy. You just take your shoes off at the entrance and there are a bunch of scarves in a basket at the door to use while you are inside. I visited on a public holiday, and there are no fees to enter.

Very nice amtosphere. Diffrent citizens coming in peace to pray. After pray time the mosque is open for tourist.

The Service of my friend Blagovest was very good. Thank you for this good Service. The Drinks and Food was very delicious.

It is a great place for seating outside in the hot days. Lots of creative cocktails, good dishes with meats and a great selection of salads. I liked the cucumber lemonade a lot. Nice DJ music in the evenings. Very friendly and attentive service, Sophia answered all my questions related to the dishes and the drinks. Thanks 😇Price level is quite good especially for this most central location in Sofia.

Great place to soak sun on nice days. The restaurant itself is very elegant but somewhat too dark for day time. Perfectly great inside for evening drinks. In the day the seated space outside is great for coffee and drinks. We had great service and loved the location.

Great drinks both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, with tasty food in the heart of Sofia. The atmosphere is really nice, would highly recommend!
Yoana P — Google review
In general service in restaurants are often ok, but here they were simply bad, arrogant and extremely slow. It was like they didn't want you to visit the restaurant. In addition, both salade we ordered for lunch, were dry and bland in taste. Far too expensive compared to what you get (no service and bad food), even for European standards. Not recommended!!!
Daniel S — Google review
The service outside is bad. The guy showed up once taking our order, then we had to look for him. He had a bad smirk, when Asian guy was looking for a server as well, talking shit in Bulgarian. The place has to shape its service up, especially when charging such a hefty price. Otherwise it's gonna look like on this photo plus they want you to add tips.

Average and expensive food. Just had a very average raven, small portion, cold egg, bof. Location atmosphere and service remain excellent, for many years, but food has gone down and prices up, no ok.

The Monument of Saint Sofia, a locally designed structure made from copper and brass, stands at over 15 meters high on a dark granite pylon. Erected in 2000, the controversial sculpture depicts Sveta Sofia holding symbols of fame, wisdom, and power. Located in the heart of Sofia across from Battenberg Square, it overlooks the city center and serves as a new civic symbol for the capital.
You know the city is something else when you find an imposing statue of Saint Sofia, who turns out to be the Patron of The City! Loved seeing it while on a walk both at night and day!

This monument or statue of Sofia was actually not as big in real life as in some of the photos. We were told that it's not where the city's name came from because it was installed much more recently. It is, however, a landmark that you can't miss, as it's right in the city center.
Michael P — Google review
It’s been a while since I last saw the monument. From memory, last time was in 2014. If I recall correctly, the monument symbolises justice for all. I may be wrong. Anyway, worth a visit, then wander through the centre to people watch! Worth a visit.

Serdika, located at the heart of Sofia, Bulgaria, has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Originally a Thracian settlement, it flourished as a Roman city known as Serdica. Throughout the centuries, it witnessed the rise and fall of empires, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. Today, Serdika remains a testament to its ancient past, with archaeological ruins, preserved landmarks, and a vibrant blend of modern life within its historic streets. Amidst Sofia's heart, I stroll with grace, In tulip blossom's vibrant embrace. A tapestry of colors, petals unfurled, Nature's masterpiece, a wonderous world. As I wander through each bustling street, The air is fragrant, pure and sweet. Tulips dance with the gentle breeze, Whispering secrets through the trees. Their vibrant hues, a joyful sight, A symphony of red, pink, and white. Each petal tells a story untold, Of beauty, resilience, and love untold. I walk amidst this floral sea, Where tulips bloom, setting hearts free. Their delicate presence, a feast for the eyes, A moment of bliss, beneath sunny skies. The city pulses with life and glee, As tulips sway, enchanting me. They nod their heads in silent cheer, Inviting dreams to draw near. I pause in awe, beneath their grace, Feeling serenity in this sacred space. Among the tulips, I find my peace, As their beauty grants my soul release. With each step I take, my spirit soars, In Sofia's heart, among tulips galore. Their splendor weaves a tale divine, As I walk through this blossoming shrine. Oh, tulips of Sofia, in full bloom, You bring life to the city's gloom. In your presence, I find delight, As we dance together, day and night. I cherish this season, pure and bright, When tulips paint Sofia with sheer delight. In this enchanting realm, I find my flow, Walking amidst tulips, my heart aglow.

Established in 1973, it houses over 650,000 items spanning from prehistoric artifacts to relics from the communist era. Situated at the Boyana complex near Vitosha Mountain, this expansive museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions along with a digital library.
Great museum with a huge collection covering Bulgaria’s history. The building is impressive, and there’s even a small café for a break. Plan enough time to see it all — a must-visit in Sofia.

Good rainy day activity that gives a full overview of Bulgarian history from Stone Age to the presence. A great introduction for people who are new to Bulgaria. There are lots of English instructions as well although some parts of history were described in less detail than others. Still very worthwhile.

It's an interesting museum - but try to come by public transport or by car, on foot it's a challenge. You have to buy your ticket outside the museum which are located in front and middle of the building. The collection is well explained ( in Bulgarian and English). Spend at least 2-3 hours to get a good grasp.
Lorenzo C — Google review
Great museum taking visitors through history of Bulgaria (from prehistoric times to Bulgaria's accesion to UE). The building is monumental and breathtaking from both the outside and inside. However it's located far away from the centre of the city (on other hand you have here amizing view at Vitosha mountains) but near the museum are located bus and tram stops.

As you would expect it was intricately informative and a great insight into the rich history that makes Bulgaria so amazing. The beautiful historic pieces are displayed nicely so you can get up close to them which is nice, and they also have some interactive displays which kids will love. Our guest, and us, really enjoyed the museum and would highly recommend a visit. There were 2 souvenir shops on site that we saw to purchase a little keepsake.

The Regional History Museum of Sofia is situated in the former baths building behind the Banya Mosque, making it conveniently close to other attractions. The museum's elegant and lavishly ornamented building houses a new permanent exhibition spread across eight halls. Visitors can explore exhibits ranging from ancient artifacts to modern cultural items, providing insight into the country's heritage. The museum offers a unique opportunity to view traditional clothing, handicrafts, and historical objects from various periods, including prehistoric and medieval times.
Beautiful building and interesting artifacts spread in 8 main rooms covering Sofia from ancient times. However, most of the exhibits focus on the period after choosing the city as a capital all the way to 1946. Still a great selection that doesn't take too long to see and the entry ticket is reasonably priced (10 bgn)

The staff told me to start the tour on the second floor. At the beginning it was not very interesting but it got better as I walked through the different exhibits. One of the best museums in the city for sure.
Ianaki I — Google review
The building now housing the Sofia History Museum was originally designed in the early 20th century as the “Central Mineral Baths”, in Vienna Secession style combined with Bulgarian-Byzantine elements. Its façade decorated with majolica mosaics, elegant domes and ornate detail gives the structure a grand charm. Behind the building the thermal spring water still flows and is used by locals — you’ll even find public taps where people fill bottles. A visit allows you to appreciate the contrast between the fine modernist architecture and the city’s historic wellness tradition.
Luana B — Google review
More about everyday life in the past (clothes, furniture, transport) than about historical events. The Ottoman period is barely covered, and the communist period is completely missing. Since these were long and important periods, the museum feels incomplete. Could be skipped if short on time.

The ancient Serdica archaeological complex features ruins from the Roman city of Serdica, which was discovered whilst the city was building the subway. These ruins are a popular attraction for tourists, who can walk around and take pictures.
An unexpected historical gem in the heart of Sofia. This well preserved archeological site was uncovered during excavation for a metro station. There are indoor and outdoor portions showcasing mosaics, various artifacts and even sewage systems of the ancient Roman city of Serdika. A very interesting and informative experience. Highly recommend.

Well worth a short stroll through. The signage and information could be a little better so I suggest reading a little about this historic site before visiting. However if you are in the center and don’t take the opportunity to at least pass through here you are definitely missing out. Amazing location for photographers too, especially on a sunny day.
Court P — Google review
The Ancient Serdica archaeological complex reveals the historical layers of the old Roman city that once stood here. Among columns, ruins of houses, and fragments of ancient streets, it’s easy to picture life more than a thousand years ago. The way the excavations blend with the urban surroundings creates a striking contrast between past and present, making it one of the most interesting spots in the city center.
Luana B — Google review
I love how accessible this whole place is to everyone. I was fascinated with how integrated the complex is to the public area in general - you’d thought they’d have to be preserved in a museum or something but it’s just there, seamless. It seems that the locals get to pass by it whenever they like? Historical, truly, but they made it beautifully mundane in the best way possible.
Irene K — Google review
I didn't expect ancient city partially inside of the subway - it was a very nice surprise. The ruins still have water and sewage pipes intact. The place is free to visit apart from the museum. Ancient Serdica has beautiful atmosphere; among the ruins there are information boards containing comprehensive knowledge about the buildings that are part of the complex. Also - it's great view point to look at other city monuments like Bania-Bashi mosque.
Otoczak O — Google review
The ruins are pretty cool and there are plaques everywhere explaining in both Bulgarian and english what you’re looking at. I will admit, I spent about 30ish minutes looking for the entrance but turns out, all the underground entrances that look like they are for the metro are the underground tunnels that lead to the ruins. Hope this helps the next person find it faster than I did!
Sabrina S — Google review
A really interesting idea it was indeed, to incorporate the historical archeological site/complex into an underpass/metro line entrance (well, it was probably the other way around, but you get me...). Alongside the similarly performed Serdika II metro station entrance just a couple of steps away from here, these are a must see (or at least pass through) places in the centre of Sofia:) (Not to mention that the remains themselves are extremely interesting, and if you are into ancient roman architecture, they should be an absolute no-brainer during your Sofia holiday...)

All in all, a fantastic place to enjoy top-notch drinks, great service, and an unforgettable setting. I’ll definitely be back!

The panoramic view from this place is absolutely breathtaking. Whether you visit during the day or at night, you’ll enjoy a beautiful scene from 120 meters above the city. The restaurant is elegant, with a calm and pleasant atmosphere. The dessert was incredible — easily one of the best I’ve had in the city. It’s also a great spot for cocktails and a relaxing evening out. However, the food didn’t quite meet expectations. I ordered chicken skewers — while the sauce was delicious, the meat was nearly raw, which was quite disappointing. The issue was fixed after I asked them to cook it properly, but the service was very slow even though the restaurant wasn’t busy. In other countries, when a kitchen mistake happens, you often get a small gesture of apology — maybe a complimentary dessert or at least a sincere “sorry.” Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here. I’ve noticed it’s a rather common attitude in Bulgaria to just act as if nothing happened. Still, for the view, desserts, and cocktails, it’s definitely worth a visit — I just wish the service matched the high standard of the location.
Olimpiada V — Google review
One of the best rooftops in Sofia! What makes this one different from the other rooftops, is not the food or the service, but the view! If you like taking pictures from above, really high, this place is for you! I have been going to this place for almost 4 years now. Have in mind that during the week, it opens late afternoon, but during the weekend it works all day as there is brunch. Honestly, every single thing that I ordered there, was very delicious! From sushi, to desserts and drinks, everything was perfect! I simply wish, they didn’t change that much their menu, as some of my favorite things are not available anymore, such as the dessert called “The Raspberry” which for me, was their signature!
Borislav T — Google review
The view at Ozone Skybar is lovely, and the brunch presentation was impressive - beautifully plated and very Instagram-friendly. However, the flavors didn’t quite live up to the visuals. For the price point, I expected something more memorable. Service was okay, but nothing stood out. Overall, it’s a decent spot for the atmosphere, but not somewhere I’d return for the food alone.

Established in 1872, The City Garden is a picturesque park featuring a fountain and vibrant flowerbeds, making it a popular spot for leisure activities like chess. As one of the most renowned parks in Sofia, it offers delightful scenery and ample opportunities to take leisurely strolls amidst lush greenery, large trees, charming water ponds, and numerous seating areas. It's an ideal outdoor destination for enjoying the serene natural beauty and captivating landscapes.
🔥🔥🔥 great park also surrounded by other parks which is always nice - you can have your choice there’s a information centre in the middle where you can get books (free I think ) but sucks for you if you don’t speak bulgarian edit: we got stuck in a storm here and the best part was that the theatre had an undercover section to get away from the rain.

We only walked through it but there is a good Costa Coffee right at the side of it. There are better parks in Sofia to hang out in and this is not really the place to hang out but a nice break from going to the National Art Gallery, the Ethnographic Museum, and the Sofia Art Museum, all of which are adjacent to the park.

The City Garden is one of my favorite parks in Sofia. It's also a typical city park, but thanks to the great fountains it's on a completely different level. There are benches and trees everywhere. During the summer it was a great place to grab a coffee and go here to relax, just look at the fountains and observe life around. I like it here, it has a good atmosphere. I think that during the season tourists will also appreciate it, since it's close to the center and at the same time it's very pleasant.

The Socialist Art Museum in Sofia, also known as the Museum of Socialist Art, is a national museum that showcases Bulgarian art and sculptures from the socialist era. Opened in 2011, it offers a fascinating collection of socialist sculptures, paintings, and other artwork. The indoor gallery displays stirring works of art from the period, while outside, over seventy statues adorn the grounds.
A definite cultural and historic must. Easy trip out on the Metro Subway or take the tram and a pleasant walk through the park of about 2.5Km. The statue garden is a fascinating piece of communist history. These are fine artists even if their artwork was co-opted for propaganda. Highly recommended.
Phae D — Google review
For me, this museum was worth it simply for the Soviet statues in the garden, which is free for all to access. We took the metro there and it’s a 10-minute walk from there. Each statue comes with an interesting Soviet design. There are many depicting Lenin. Since I grew up in Muslim Russia, it reminded me of home. My two friends thought it interesting, but not as much.
Austin G — Google review
It’s a decent museum of the communist era art. I’d say it’s rather small especially the exhibition inside of the museum. I had higher hopes to see posters and some more communist era arts inside. In a positive note, the clerks are the sweetest ladies, we visited the museum with a company of folks from the eastern block and had so much fun.

Not easy to reach on foot (better to take a bus or taxi). The video is the highlight, especially if you already joined the Communist Tour. The exhibition itself is small, and the outdoor statue garden is okay. The viewing room was very hot with no fan or AC. Overall, nice but not essential.
Pamela — Google review
Well worth a little trip out on the Metro. Lots of old soviet era statues just planted in a small park behind a shopping centre. And a massive red star. That’s free, but pay a few Leva (around 5 depending on the day) and look at the socialist art in the gallery. Also a video of Bulgarian soviet history from late 1940’s ish

I wasn’t expecting much but the garden looked pretty nice and there was no one there as we went there when the museum was already closed. I don’t know how it looks inside but the garden is great and is definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.

Very interesting place from people of countries of the former USSR. There you can see a lot of communist posters of different countries, sculptures and information about communist past of Bulgaria. For some reason there were very few people, I was the only visitor. There is also a very small souvenir shop in the museum, but I didn't find anything interesting there for me.

Definitely worth a visit. 8 Lev A bit confusing at first as it's not that clear You just walk past the security guard at the gate past the huge red star then turn left to the ticket booth inside a small doorway. After that it's out back into the garden and up the steps to the posters and paintings. Small gift shop, too, with some postcards and posters

The Palace - National Art Gallery is a significant cultural institution in Sofia, Bulgaria. Housed in the former royal palace, it showcases over 50,000 pieces of Bulgarian art spanning from the Middle Ages to contemporary works. The palace itself has a rich history, having served as the residence for Sultans of Turkey and later being reformed into an opulent Viennese-style building for the Bulgarian Monarchy.
I had a fantastic visit to the Sofia National Art Gallery and the National Ethnographic Museum, both located in the beautiful former royal palace. You need two separate tickets to visit both, but it’s absolutely worth it. The ladies at the ticket offices were very kind and helpful. The art gallery has a great mix of classical and modern Bulgarian works. The ethnographic museum was a highlight — I had a lovely conversation with a passionate staff member who explained the meanings behind rug motifs like the butterfly, scorpion, and scissors, and even mentioned Turkish names for some of them. I hope she can visit Cappadocia one day, as we discussed! Don’t miss the Cosmos-themed floor in the ethnographic museum — it’s unique and fascinating. Both museums are well-presented with English descriptions, and together they offer a deep look into Bulgarian culture and heritage. Highly recommended!

Bulgaria’s National Art Gallery is a cultural gem, blending grandeur with intimacy. Its halls showcase vibrant paintings, intricate icons, and striking sculptures that capture the nation’s spirit. The building itself, a former royal palace, adds a sense of majesty without overshadowing the art. Each room feels like a journey through history and imagination, offering both inspiration and quiet reflection in the heart of Sofia.

a delectable art gallery with three exhibits included in the ticket - 4 lev for students. these are some of my favourite pieces, the artists self-portrait, a bulgarian lady, and a still life. I also liked the one of the evening star but unfortunately google wont let me post it as the women are nude in the painting. definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in sofia and it’s in a prime location with parks, theatres and other attractions nearby

Honestly disappointing, I've been to art museums all over the world. This one seems small, you can see everything quite quickly. Part of the building is dedicated to another museum. I think the other national gallery down the street is better. More over, when I entered the limited gift shop. The lady that works there stands up and WATCHES you as you are browsing the store. I found it quite rude and unsettling. The saving grace is that the entry is cheap, and there are a few pieces of art I loved.
Pob V — Google review
Beautiful place both for the interior and exhibitions they do. The lady working at reception was unkind. Maybe she should change the workplace.
Rose D — Google review
The gallery was fairly empty when we came in. Great experience to learn from. As far as I know, one of the most famous paintings here is Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne which illustrates a story told by the classical authors Ovid and Catullus. The gallery is a true treasure trove of masterpieces and a testament to the enduring power of human creativity.
Cristian G — Google review
I found this a worthwhile museum both historically and artistically. On one side was the Ethnographic museum which was a fascinating glimpse into the world of pre-war, rural Bulgaria with clothes, tools, weaving demonstration, silverwork, and many other aspects of a by-gone life. On the other side is the art gallery which had the most amazing photo artistic journalism of a maximum security prison in Bulgaria. There is a wide spread of period art from classical portraits of royalty to contemporary art. The current theme of war was appropo and a strong reminder of why we should avoid it. We went on 2 separate days since each side was a lot to see.

The Monument of the Unknown Soldier in Sofia is a significant site that pays tribute to the soldiers who fought for Bulgaria's freedom. Adjacent to a Neo Byzantine style church, this monument, also known as the Eternal Flame, symbolizes the eternal memory of those who perished in wars. The monument features a stone inscription by national writer Ivan Vazov and stands next to the 6th-century Church of St Sophia.
Nice work

Melanie E — Google review
I always appreciate a little "something" for the unknown soldiers who have given their lives for their country - which ever country it might be.
Rodney E — Google review
The monument is also called Eternal Flame because as the flame never dies so all the soldiers died in the wars for the freedom of Bulgaria won't be forgotten. A stone inscription of a stanza by the national writer Ivan Vazov says : "O BULGARIA, FOR YOU THEY DIED, ONLY ONE WERE YOU WORTHY OF THEM AND THEY OF YOU WORTHY, O MOTHER, WERE!" The monument is at the side facade of 6th-century Church of St Sophia, on 2 Paris Street. There's an impressive lion scupture, a symbol of Bulgaria, who guards the place. On 3rd March (the Day of Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Dominion, official holiday for Bulgaria) ceremonies involving the President of Bulgaria, the government and foreign state leaders are often performed here. People lay flowers and honour all the soldiers who gave their lives for the liberation of Bulgaria.

The Central Baths Fountain in Sofia has a rich history dating back to medieval times, attracting visitors with its spring activity. The Ottomans built their own hammam at the site, and after it was destroyed during the Bulgarian Revival, a new bathing complex was constructed. The Central Baths, established in 1913 and operational until the mid-80s, stand as a testament to this legacy.
majestic fountain - the pitter-patter of the water on a summer’s day really makes you feel a sense of longing and nostalgia for the rain and winter. also there’s a cool thermal tap attached to the museum building.

Prices are a bit high, but reasonable.

Lovely rooftop bar with a stunning view of the mountains and Sofia city as well. Located at the 8th floor with elevator access. They have nice cocktails menu, as well as decent food menu. They also serve special lunch time menu. In the evening, it turns into a piano bar with live music. It is recommended to reserve beforehand if you are planning to visit during weekend evenings. Evening view from the terrace wasn't that impressive though, but the overall atmosphere was nice with good crowd. Staffs are courteous, however the middle-aged hostess in the evening seemed a bit strange - maybe that's an one-off thing (maybe not). Credit cards accepted. Orthodox church
Located in the heart of Sofia, the Church of St. Nicholas the Miraclemaker is a striking 1914 Russian Orthodox church with a vibrant tiled exterior and gilded onion domes. Designed by Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhenski in the Russian Revival Style, it served as the official church of the nearby Russian Embassy and community in Sofia. The architecture is reminiscent of Muscovite Russian churches from the 17th century.
a spectacular church - I particularly love the gold trim. it makes it seem super ornate and beautiful. it’s very nice inside but you can’t take pictures so you’ll just have to take me at my word for it. you can also go downstairs into the crypt which is cool. also they have paintings of biblically accurate angels on the walls which is nice to see
Antonia P — Google review
If you are interested in a better angle for photos, head over to the back of the church by the park. It is less busy and more chances of you getting a solo shot. This is the more humble and smaller church in the old city of Sofia. The architecture itself is reflective of most Orthodox Christian churches with the orb cupolas which are glistening and gleaming of gold. Still a cool stop to make during your walks!
Nabil R — Google review
This little Russian Revival style church is so cute and worth the visit. The golden domes are so unique of Russian churches and very attractive from afar. No wait or tickets and very little crowd during the week. Definitely worth a visit to receive blessings of St.Nicholas the Wonder-Maker 🙏🏼

I was truly impressed seeing this church, even if only from the outside. It looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale! The Muscovite-style architecture is very rich, full of details and vibrant colors. What stands out the most, without a doubt, are its golden, onion-shaped domes, which shine brightly and stand out in the city center. It is a unique building, different from everything around it, and perfect for taking some memorable photos.

The Basilica of Saint Sofia, a 6th-century Byzantine church, is a stunning architectural marvel in the heart of Sofia. Its largely brick interior and captivating paintings, along with an underground crypt, showcase a blend of Byzantine and Bulgarian Revival styles. This historical site holds great significance to the city's history and was built on the grounds of ancient churches and a necropolis.
The Church of St. Sofia is a place full of history and charm. Walking through the ancient brick walls and exploring the ruins beneath is like stepping back in time. The underground remains offer a fascinating glimpse into Sofia’s past, making this site a must for history lovers

One of the oldest Orthodox churches in Sofia. You can sense the age of the building which was built in the 4th century. It's worth the visit since it's dedicated to Saint Sophia. Unfortunately, the only negative experience was the rudeness and hostility of one of the staff. I didn't realize there was a fee to take photos, so the man approached me aggressively to demand the fee. There's no problem, I considered it a donation but, I hope someone could talk with this staff for a more friendlier approach.
Ash — Google review
This church is one of Sofia’s most important historical landmarks and among the oldest in the region. It was built in the 6th century during the Byzantine Empire, and its red-brick architecture and imposing dome reflect the solidity and simplicity of Byzantine style. The building’s architecture is quite different from more ornate cathedrals, showing a rustic charm inside, with thick walls and narrow windows. The church’s simplicity and austere appearance create an atmosphere of serenity, calm, and contemplation, leaving a strong impression while telling centuries of history. Visiting the main church is free. For those who want to delve deeper into the site’s history, there’s a fascinating archaeological museum in the crypt. This underground section displays the church’s ancient foundations and Roman tombs from the old city of Serdica, with mosaics dating from the 3rd to 5th centuries. Entrance to the archaeological museum is paid (around 3 euros or 6 BGN).

The Cathedral of Saint Nedelya, also known as Sveta Nedelya, is an ornate Orthodox church located in the heart of Sofia. Originally a small wooden church dating back to the 10th century, it was later rebuilt into a grand cathedral in 1856. The cathedral features a majestic medieval design with a huge central dome and bell tower. Despite being severely damaged in a terrorist attack in 1925, the cathedral was reconstructed and still retains its historical charm.
Located just steps from Serdica Metro Station, Saint Nedelya Cathedral impresses at first glance with its striking neo‑Byzantine architecture and central dome that defines Sofia's skyline . As you pass through the entrance—free and welcoming—you're drawn into a serene interior enriched with vivid frescoes, ornate icons, and a beautifully carved gilded iconostasis dating from 1865 . Despite its tranquil ambiance today, the cathedral carries a profound and somber history. In 1925, it was the site of Bulgaria’s deadliest terrorist attack: a bomb exploded during a funeral service, killing over 200 people and injuring hundreds more . After rising from that tragedy, the church was meticulously rebuilt and restored by 1933 to stand once again as a place of worship and beauty.
Leandro H — Google review
While it's not the most famous nor emblematic church in Sofia, the locals seem to prefer or like it better than the patriarchal church that is known by many. You are allowed to take pictures inside but only with a 5 Lev or 2-3 euro donation. You can donate immediately on the counter to your left upon entering. Please donate if you are taking photos! The money is used for the church upkeep!

The museum was overall quite impressive; however, it is housed in a former Ottoman mosque, and unfortunately, the original ceiling motifs have been completely painted over in white. Nestled in the heart of Sofia, the Medieval Orthodox Temple of St. Petka Samardjiyska is a charming and unpretentious stone church that captivates visitors with its rich history and stunning ancient biblical murals. This hidden gem stands as a testament to the city’s deep-rooted Orthodox heritage, alongside other remarkable landmarks like the Alexander Nevski Cathedral and the historic St. George Rotunda.
The small church of St. Petka Samardjiyska stands out for its modest size and semi-underground structure, surrounded by the city’s modern buildings. Built in the 14th century over Roman ruins, it reflects the humble, discreet style of Orthodox churches from the Ottoman period. It’s a curious and historic spot where the ancient and modern coexist beautifully.

Lovely from the outside with bags of history. Would have loved to see inside. "JUST HERE" a shouted the woman in the relic shop just inside. We could head chanting from inside the church itself. We wondered if there was a service and it would be open later? I politely asked... "Is it poss..." "NEVER OPEN!" she shouted. So that's your answer. Shame. Seems from other reviews it was open years ago. But no longer.

Small church in the city center, one of the oldest churches in Sofia together with the St. George Rotonda. It was first mentioned in the 16th century but it is probably much older than that. I couldn't get inside as ut was locked but from the outside it seems well preserved. Too bad such an old monument today serves as the entrance to a subway station.
Klaus W — Google review
Many old cities were built in layers. As contractors excavate to build newer structures, they inadvertently reveal layers that had been buried underground for centuries. The area around Sveta Petka, and the church itself, is one such layer. That's the main reason for it being lower than the modern city. Walk around to get a feel of how the city used to be in ancient times.

National museum
The National Museum of Military History, established in 1916, offers a deep dive into the compelling history of the Bulgarian military. Visitors can explore an extensive collection of weapons, uniforms, medals, documents, and other military artifacts. The museum's mission is to educate the public about national defense and honor those who sacrificed their lives for their country.
This was so much more than what I could have imagined. The extent and quality of the museum was incredible. The staff were kind and helpful. As you enter the grounds you see a large quality of vehicles, aircraft and other equipment, mostly from WWII and the cold war era. The museum itself is a multi-level building that is laid out very well. There is a center staircase and as you ascend you enter a different time period. Each of the wings has a different theme (clothing, medals/awards, equipment, etc).

Very interesting and informative. There are different ticket packages depending on how much you want to see. The entrance exhibition is free, but you can also buy a ticket for the 2nd outdoor exhibition or choose a package to access the other floors. Worth exploring if you have time.

The National Museum of Military History in Sofia is an impressive place for anyone wanting to dive into Bulgaria’s and Europe’s military past. Established in 1916, it preserves over one million artefacts — weapons, uniforms, medals and wartime equipment. The outdoor area features tanks, missiles, aircraft and combat vehicles, giving a tangible sense of the scale of 20th-century conflicts. The indoor chronological exhibition covers medieval arms through to the modern era in a well-organized and accessible space. A very handy detail: admission is free on the last Wednesday of each month, which makes it possible to visit at no cost. I recommend allocating at least two hours to explore both the indoor and outdoor sides, and wear comfortable shoes because there are many large pieces around.

Visited on a Sunday morning, no queue, no wait; you just enter. Great museum, a lot to see: a lot of tanks, armored vehicles, and aviation-related stuff. The museum building is superb and leads you through all of the history of Bulgaria.

Massive collection of good condition ww2, soviet and modern military vehicles, tanks and aircraft for free on display and a well kept diverse collection of military equipment, uniforms and pieces in the paid museum section. Definitely one of the best military museums
Sean Z — Google review
One of the most interesting museums I've ever seen. Big variety of units from the Bulgarian revolution, Balkan wars, first and second world wars and cold war. Outside there are vehicles and aircrafts from the soviet era, amazing
Dam S — Google review
If you like military history, this is the place to visit. I was blown away by the layout and all the history on display. From uniforms, equipment, weapons and everything else. I suggest you give yourself several hours here. I showed up late in the day, and found myself rushing just to try and see it all.
Charles D — Google review
A lot to see, really rich museum, when planing visit then plan 90-120 minutes minimum. There is outside part with airplanes, ballistic rackets, defense systems, Tanks and alot other stuff. Inside its a building with 4 floors and whole Bulgaria history until 20 th century. All kind of uniforms, weapons and a lot of more.

Today we experienced something beautiful. 🌳 A park with many attractions, a punk concert that made us remember the past 🎶, and many stands with tasty food 🍩🍺. I really envy Sofia. We liked it a lot ❤️.

amazing park! my friend and I set up camp under a pavilion and sat there for like 6 hours just chatting and then subsequently reading our books. i’m impressed by how many people bought their own hammocks with them and strung them up between the trees. pretty cool idea. there’s also a water fountain with ice cold water in the middle of the park past the playground and also bathrooms however they were closed when we went
Antonia P — Google review
A nice place for walk. It's quiet with a lot of trees and different paths you can take. It's suitable for a walk with friends, with your dog and there are paths suitable for strollers. After working hours or during the weekends, there are parts of Borisiva garden that can be really crowded.
Tihomira P — Google review
Great spacious park with a nice forested area. There's play areas for kids, pleasant walking trails, and for those in need of a pitstop... a few cafe/bars to grab a beer or sandwich
Damien S — Google review
Beautiful and iconic park in the heart of Sofia. It’s spacious, green, and full of history. You’ll find wide tree-lined paths, flower gardens (especially the Rosarium), and peaceful spots like the lily pond and the Japanese corner. Great for walking, jogging, or just relaxing on a bench. There are playgrounds for kids, sports areas, and even cafés around if you want a drink or snack. Easy to reach by metro (Stadium Vasil Levski station is right next to it). Some parts are a bit less maintained, but overall it’s one of the best places to enjoy nature and unwind in the city. A must-visit if you’re in Sofia!

I really loved the place and it’s atmosphere. The tea we’ve got was the best I’ve ever had and the owner was actually super nice and shared the recipe with me (he even gave me the spices to show me what they used and be able to reproduce it). I would definitely come back!

Great and cosy bar in Sofia. The most delicious Mojito cheesecake was served next to homemade raspberry wine and homemade sangria , next to a good selection of ginger beer, rose lemonade and tonic. It's more a bar to chill out and relax, not so much for dancing or wild parties. Would love to come again and bring some friends.

The Orthodox temple of The Seven Saints, also known as the Church of the Holy Seven, is a significant monument in Sofia with a fascinating history. It was originally an Ottoman mosque before being transformed into an Orthodox church. The interior is adorned with intricate paintings and gold coverings, and a massive chandelier illuminates the space. Adjacent to the bustling garden, this active church holds daily services and stands as the centerpiece of the square due to its religious and historical significance.
It was such a blessing to experience this church and pray inside those magnificent walls. It's highly recommended to visit.

Small but very beautiful church. Free entry and worth a visit if you are in the area.
Sam A — Google review
Located on Graf Ignatiev Street, is one of the most interesting historic spots in the city centre. Built in 1547 as a mosque during the Ottoman period, it was converted into an Orthodox church in 1903. The architecture blends Ottoman elements, such as simple forms, with Neo‑Byzantine details on the façade and dome. The interior is delicately decorated with frescoes and icons that reflect centuries of religious tradition.
Luana B — Google review
The Orthodox Temple is a real gem! The ceiling is absolutely stunning and totally different from what I see in most European churches. The place has beautiful design and details. It’s definitely worth stopping and is free to enter. I am impressed with this place.

Very cool church which has what reminds us of art nouveau paintings inside, communist era, propaganda style painting, but also resembled Saint Anne de Beaupre in Quebec with the painting style. Definitely worthwhile but be sure to go in to see the unique style paintings.

Kambanite (The Bells) Park is a serene escape located just 20 minutes from Sofia, where nature meets meaningful symbolism. This enchanting park features a striking Brutalist monument adorned with bells sourced from various countries, each representing the beauty and unity of children around the globe. Visitors can engage in the delightful experience of ringing these bells, making it an enjoyable outing for families.
I recently visited Kambanite (The Bells) Park, and it turned out to be a wonderful escape from the busy city life of Sofia. Located at the base of Vitosha Mountain, this park offers a perfect blend of cultural charm and natural beauty. The centerpiece of the park is the bell tower. But there’s more to the park than just the bells. The surrounding area is lush and green, with maintained walking trails that are perfect for a casual stroll. The scenery is stunning, and the trails are easy enough for families and children. There are also plenty of open spaces making it a great spot for picnics and letting kids run around. Getting to the park is straightforward, with parking available. What I loved most about Kambanite Park was the bells. Only children are allowed to ring the bells gently, with five children that was no problem.
Rambo P — Google review
Fun place for the kids to walk around. Some of the bells have very interesting details and often times can give a sense of what the country’s style/architecture/tastes are. Found it interesting that they keep bells from countries that no longer exist. Hope they keep them as they display a piece of history
Magdalena A — Google review
The Bells monument is situated 14 km eastwards from the center of Sofia at the foot of Vitosha Mountain. Children from all over the planet built into the unique monument their faith in the good and bright days without war and violence to come. The United Nations Organization declared 1979 as the Year of the Child and their Problems. The little being, no matter in which part of the planet he/she is and color his/her skin craves both to live in peace and a good environment and to study and develop.
Brian J — Google review
Really great park. You can go and try a lot of different bells (with kids it's even more fun). A lot of different countries (some are missing), delegations, some from bigger events. They should just keep track of their trash days more often.
StanD1 — Google review
It's a unique place with amazing ideas to do something for the children. It's a pity that it's not the case anymore. Still, it's great to go there and to imagine children smiles and laughs.

Noyko N — Google review
This is a great place! Just be prepared that there may be kids like mine around… Despite numerous requests and warnings about not being too noisy, they couldn’t help themselves and had a great time playing with the bells. We had some fun too, and I particularly enjoyed seeing some of the more unusual bells from different countries. Such a huge range of them. Worth stopping by if you’re in the area.
Mike R — Google review
Long-forgotten or completely unknown to most, the monument is very impressive. It is built in 1989, so it has a 90s architectural vibe. Anyway, it's a must see. There is also a barbecue zone in the area.

It is a very large park. I went there birding, but it was so popular that there were lots of visitors, though not crowded, it does not have as many birds as Borisova Gradina Park. The Island with the Reeds has some waterbirds. I enjoyed my hike of the place from the south end to its north end.

Additionally, the nearby National Gallery Kvadrat 500 showcases over 2,000 paintings from Bulgarian and foreign artists across its four levels.
The main building of national museum gallery. It’s huge. Vast collection of art pieces of Romanian and European artists. The inside of the building is quite spacious. There is an indoor courtyard that connects to another building. The art displayed is from different parts of the world, and the temporary exhibition features works by Picasso. Overall, it was a genuinely pleasant experience.

The Kvadrat 500 complex hosts the largest part of the gorgeous collection of the National Gallery of Bulgaria, spanning from the revival of Bulgarian National art in the XVIII-XIX centuries to the great masters of the XX century, like Dimitrov. Its excellent collection further includes artworks from other regions of the world, including Asia, Africa and Meso-America, organized in a spacious and modern space. If you are in Sofia you can’t miss this beautiful museum, located just 100 meters from the Nevskij Cathedral.
Edoardo P — Google review
Too much to see in too little time. When we wanted to enter we already got warned that we only had 2 hours left. "Sounds like plenty of time, we'll enter". This building has multiple stories with permanent and temporary exhibitions. This time there was also the biennial glass expo which was simply a feast for the eyes. Sadly we didn't get to see half of the permanent collection since we were too occupied with the glass and some temporary parts we just got to see. Definitely worth a visit, but make sure you can spend a lot of time here :)
Vesko V — Google review
We flew to Bulgaria specifically to attend the 2025 Glass Art Biennale. The glass art itself was fantastic, but the experience was one of the worst I've had at an art museum. We brought our children with us. They are older, well-mannered, and accustomed to spending time around glass art. But one of the staff women spent the entire time following us around (closer than 2 meters!) and scowling, told us to take our children to the garden or to make them sit down instead of seeing the exhibit, and generally made the whole experience unpleasant, uncomfortable, and discouraging of children being exposed to art. Very disappointing and off-putting experience.

The Scene Rooftop Bar & Terrace, located atop the Hyatt Regency in Sofia, has quickly become a popular spot since its opening in 2020. Offering panoramic views of the city and mountains, including the iconic Cathedral Saint Aleksandar Nevski, it's an ideal place to savor Mediterranean cuisine and creative cocktails inspired by Sofia and glamorous European and Middle Eastern locations. The bar offers a luxurious and cozy atmosphere with polite staff.
One of the few best roof top bars in Sofia. The view is amazing! Probably the best place to catch the sunset, if you are lucky. 👌The cocktails are not the best but the presentation copensates the taste. Service 10/10. Happy and friendly staff.
Simona D — Google review
Staying at the Hyatt, which is a beautiful hotel. Really love my experience here. The service at the hotel itself has been outstanding. One of the reasons I picked this hotel however was for the rooftop bar advertised. Unfortunately the rooftop falls short…. Originally got seated in what I can only explain to be a highway for traffic. I asked to be moved and then was seated in the back which usually wouldn’t be a problem however once the sun sets there was pure darkness and was unable to see what I was eating or anything in front of me.The food is average. I ordered tuna which looked beautiful however was completely over salted and I was unable to taste the beautiful fish hiding underneath. Next was the shrimp tacos which were simply just okey. The dessert however recommended by the waitress was definitely the saving grace. It was full of surprises and I quite enjoyed that. The service was the best part of the experience however you could tell the staff were overwhelmed and clearly they need more help. I noticed that the hostess doesn’t seem to do much to help her colleagues and I would think that at least she could bring lights out to the people in the dark at the back. Anyway not the greatest of rooftop bars but don’t think it’s over priced either. So I guess you get what you pay for in the end.

Terribly bad impression right from the moment I called to make a reservation — and it was on a weekday, too. Eventually, the girl reluctantly admitted that two people couldn't stay for more than two hours because they needed to turn over the tables, and that for a table with a nice view, there was a minimum spend of 60 BGN per person... I was immediately put off and definitely decided not to set foot in that place!

Great rooftop bar in the center of Sofia. Might be the best spot to take pictures overlooking the city. Cocktails are great, service as well. Prices are higher than usual but worth it considering the view and location. Definitely worth a visit when in Sofia
Harald D — Google review
The main reason me and my friends went here was because of the view, unfortunately since it’s winter and the weather is cold, the terrace was closed which is absolutely normal. Nonetheless, the place was luxurious and cozy and the workers were really polite. We ordered the non alcoholic drinks which were delicious but a bit bitter. We also ordered chicken bao buns with fries and they were tasty. The desserts were also delicious. The presentation was great. Overall, I think it’s best to visit this place in the summer when you can enjoy it’s full potential.
Bella V — Google review
This used to be a favourite place—until they introduced a policy requiring a minimum spend of 60 leva per person just to make a reservation. It’s extremely frustrating. What if I’m simply in the mood for one cocktail? Forcing a high minimum consumption is a pure price speculation. When I shared my concerns with the manager, she justified it by saying that it’s the same in countries like France. But Bulgaria is not France—the standard of living is different. Applying foreign pricing logic here just doesn’t make sense

Hard to rate. It's very pretty, yes. It's utterly quiet and calm. The forests around are beautiful. But it's not worth a trip on its own, we were there for less than five minutes. But we did enjoy seeing it and walking around the forest afterwards. So if you're in the area, it's worth a look.

Serene and beautiful monastery. It’s a 30 min drive from Sofia. I have seen hiking trails around too!
Leizel L — Google review
Rather disappointing monastery. While it has some historical significance, it offers nothing to visitors, not even signs explaining its history. The surrounding area is poorly maintained, with litter scattered around, and the road leading to it is in terrible condition (typically Bulgarian). Unless you are religious, you’ll probably find the visit a waste of time.

The park Vrana is one of the most beautiful in Sofia and it is home to the Museum of Fine Arts. The grounds are also home to a number of impressive trees, shrubs and plants. This idyllic spot is perfect for a relaxing walk or picnic with friends.
The palace of the Bulgarian Kingdom! It's worth seeing as every detail is a marvellous piece of history. Elegance and style, delight for the senses of tranquillity and peace. I was so happy to see how things were made with quality and charm and kept with love and meaningful values, thanks to H.M. King Simeon.

Vrana Palace is a hidden gem in Sofia, offering a fascinating glimpse into Bulgaria’s royal history. Once the residence of the Bulgarian royal family, the palace is surrounded by a stunning botanical park, making it a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. While the interior of the palace is not always open to the public, the beautifully landscaped gardens are the highlight of the visit. Featuring rare plant species, picturesque walking paths, and small lakes, the park is a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. Guided tours provide interesting insights into the history of the Bulgarian monarchy and the significance of the estate. A wonderful place for a weekend walk, a family outing, or a history lesson in a serene environment. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Sofia!
Violina P — Google review
The park is well kept. I like the fact that there is enough space for everyone in it. There's no any overcrowded feeling. It does have a small parking lot upside so you can park your car without any concerns. And it's quite affordable 1lv for parking - daily. There're several shops upfront so you can take some soft drinks and some snacks. You have 5 lv entrance tax for the park itself. It would make sense it there are several more benches spread throughout the park. Otherwise it was just an amazing nature experience.

Imo it isn't really a great park. The way they taken care of things is so so. The lake looks bad maintained.. It is strange that a family ticket is cheaper than just two adults, why? Quit expensive, there are better parks for free closer to the city centre. This park still seems popular tho, free parking available. No foreign bank cards taken..
Anton A — Google review
Maybe the best country park in Bulgaria. Big collection of old trees planted with passion. Unfortunately the buildings are not allowed to enter, but the surroundings are great. You shouldn't miss it if you like woodland walking.

It's a nice place to visit, especially if you are a tourist. You will be able to see one of the royal castles and its garden. It is very calm and relaxing to stay there for a while - just to sit and enjoy the park. The entrance costs 5 leva (2.5 Euro)

The Monument of Stefan Stambolov stands as a tribute to one of Bulgaria's most courageous figures. Known for his role in uprisings against the Turkish empire and controversial tenure as prime minister, he played a pivotal role in shaping modern Bulgaria. The monument is situated within the Crystal Garden, offering a serene setting with fountains and beautiful statues. This park provides an ideal spot to relax and take in the surroundings, making it a must-see for visitors exploring Sofia.
Looks like a brand new one. Clean and shiny. There were fresh flowers next to it. Located inside the Crystal garden, opposite the Military club and 2 steps away from the Russian church, literally in the heart of Sofia. Make sure to sit and rest in Crystal garden - one of the nicest city gardens in Sofia.

Stefan Stambolov is one of the bravest Bulgarians. Participant in three riots against Turkish empire, when Bulgaria was part of it. After the Liberation was one of the most controversial prime ministers of Bulgaria, but it was his government that lay the bases of the modern Bulgarian state. Very big anti-Russian. He crashed very viciously, one their attempts for coup against Bulgarian king. Was slaughtered in day light in the very center of Sofia with a sword by a Macedonian killer. Died few days later from his heavy wounds! Communists hated him very much because of his bravery and independent politics against Russia! Glory to this Bulgarian hero and martur!

Magical place. I have been to the garden several times and still every time is like the first. For only 6 leva you can enjoy a quiet time in the company of centennial trees, blooming flowers and exotic plants. Small but very very charming garden.

Definitely a must see in Sofia! Loved it there even if I'm not into plants. There were almost no visitors on Sunday at noon, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Has a nice view of the St. Alexander Nevsky cathedral, and a cute kitty in the back yard. It was my first visit, will go back in the spring for sure.

Nestled just a short stroll from Sofia's city center, the National Polytechnic Museum is a treasure trove for technology enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Established in 1957, this compact yet fascinating museum houses an impressive collection of over 22,000 artifacts that span various fields such as transportation, telecommunications, and audio-visual equipment.
There were numerous amazing artifacts (pay your attention to Bulgarian computers "Правец"). I would also like to emphasize the kindness of the staff. The museum is not big but it deserves the attention to visit it. However, the building is not visible and the location is not convenient.

The Women's Market, also known as Zhenski Pazar, is a historic open-air market established in 1878. It offers a variety of goods including fresh produce, homemade jams, and counterfeit items. Located on Stefan Stambolov Blvd, it operates daily from 8 am to 6 pm. Visitors can explore the bustling market for an array of products such as fruits, vegetables, clothes, and household items.
Nice place to walk and observe locals purchasing produce and other goods. 3 ft tall Bulgaria leeks, eggplant and red peppers (paprika) abound!

A bustling market where you can buy fruits, vegetables, honey and other food and handmade products. It has the typical eastern-european-market vibe and it therefore serves as a pretty interesting tourist location as well.
Andrej K — Google review
It's is a lovely market but it could do with a little bit of a revamp and a clean. I Know!!! It's a market, but I have seen other markets I'm my life. It's an interesting market, it is mostly food, vegetables, fruits and herbs, some other things found as well but mostly food. It is a Mostly in a built area so you are protected from the element and that's great. From start to finish with a few stops I woisay it took us 40 minutes so a very good landmark while doing sightseeing in Sopia. This is by no means a "Must-go", but it was lovely to see.
Roni L — Google review
On this Women's market, near the end, you will see this little wine shop. We had some glass of red and my other friends had white and we all had some charcuterie. Lovely lady was very warm and she sells rose scented lotion and other stuff too
AYESHA N — Google review
A lively local market with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and everyday items. It’s a good place to see how locals shop and pick up some reasonably priced produce. Not fancy, but worth a quick visit if you’re nearby.
Walter W — Google review
The market is a really lively place, with a huge variety of products — from fruits and vegetables to household items and souvenirs. It’s a great spot to soak up local life and see the hustle and bustle. That said, you need to keep a close eye and be selective. The range is wide, but quality can be hit or miss. For example, I bought a bucket of strawberries that looked beautiful on top but, unfortunately, were spoiled underneath. Even so, it’s a worthwhile experience for anyone looking for better prices and a dive into popular culture.

Nestled close to the stunning St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, La Cattedrale offers an inviting atmosphere with outdoor seating that boasts breathtaking views of the iconic landmark. It's a perfect spot to unwind with a refreshing beer, although prices may be slightly elevated due to its prime location. The menu features delicious dishes, and while the staff is initially warm and welcoming, they can become a bit preoccupied as the day progresses.
Beautiful restaurant! It was bustling with people when we got there on the evening! All the salads were amazing! Selection of wines was pretty impressive! The service was also quite quick in the evening. If you take the corner indoor tables you can open the window, and have a mix of indoor and outdoor feel! The Ambiance and the view of Cathedral Saint Aleksandar Nevski is quite eye pleasing! Recommended 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
A K — Google review
Obviously a great view onto the cathedral. However, service is not the quickest ( but friendly). Food is average. Had the pork tenderloin and that was fairly blunt ( bro put a sauce on that plate ,this looks like food I do at 3am drunk). Tartar was ok for the price. Pasta is simple and good. A usual with spots like this you pay for the view. I rather recommend this place as a stop for a beer or coffee.
Martin E — Google review
I had a really disappointing experience at this restaurant. The pasta was bad and bland, the risotto was mushy and had zero flavor, and the lemonade tasted like it came straight from a cheap powder mix. To make things worse, the staff were rude and inattentive. Save your time and money—there are much better places to eat in town!
Brian B — Google review
The place has great views at Alexander Nevski cathedral. The garden is quite good and it is perfect for careless summer nights. The food however is just average - the menu is quite big and there are also seasonal offerings, but french fries were mushy and the food was okay but not particularly delicious. Some items from the main menu are reasonably priced while others are quite expensive (such as the more special meat cuts), so I would say prices are high and you pay for the view. The service is quick and polite.
M G — Google review
I popped in for lunch with six of us and managed to get a table. The restaurant was very bust but the service and waiting times were fine. I had village sausage with Sagnaki sauce, which was nice.
David G — Google review
Good location & lovely view of the Alexander Nevski Cathedral. In terms of food both burgers were great and the fries were one of the best I’ve ever tried. Even though food was served fast, the waiter was far from friendly, welcoming and respectful and his overall attitude left us with an unpleasant impression about this restaurant. Not to mention that 2 out of 4 forks were visibly dirty and when we had to return them, we didn’t receive any apologies for the inconvenience. Even though we enjoyed the food, the overall experience wasn’t good enough to make me go back there any time soon.
G. K — Google review
It was extremely cold. The service and manager’s attitude was terrible. At first we were given one table but then they told us that we have to move to a different one as we are not regular clients and they want to have that table vacant for people who would have lunch. The dessert that I ordered was not fresh and on the top of that my hazelnut cappuccino had no hazelnut flavor as it is supposed to.

Perfect dinner. Had some family over here in Sofia and decided to try this restaurant. I loved every minute of it. The View is indeed very nice. The food was great. But the service made it perfect!!! Thnx Patricia for making this a perfect evening!!!!!!

A great disappointment with a great view. Do you miss school canteen food? Do not fear, just visit The View Restaurant at lunch time!! Buffet lunch was on offer, limited to only three or four options. The service was non-existent apart from to some women sitting a few tables down. Maybe wear your expensive watch for better service? The plants on the tables were all dead, however a man came round to replace them. Unfortunately he decided we weren't worth a new one, despite replacing them on other occupied tables! (see pictures) The View Restaurant has received two stars purely because of the view which was incredible. Go for the view not the food or service.
Aaron M — Google review
The View is not so bad restaurant in the heart of Sofia. Actually, the restaurant has a 360° view to Sofia and Vitosha Mountain. It's concentrated about Modern European cuisine which my expectations wasn't covered by the taste. The staff was trying to be nice and friendly but I couldn't see charming enough. However, friend of mine and I got kind of disappointed of all, either the prices was so high without base to be covered of no one component.

The view is amazing. You can see the whole city! But it was confusing to find in my opinion and the food wasn't that great. It was in a buffet style which I personally don't really like, but the food also didn't seem spectacular. Just go there to have a coffee and a cake, but not to have lunch.

The prices are intentionally affordable to attract an artistic and intellectual crowd, with a glass of wine costing just 2.50 leva. A great semi-outdoor bar with nice music and great cocktails. Lots of choice and the drinks come very fast. Service is great, went there two times, different servers - both were super attentive and friendly. Well recommended.

K.E.B.A. is a great place for drinks. The space was beautifully designed, with three distinct rooms to choose from. Two of them even allowed smoking. The drinks were spot on, and the atmosphere was really pleasant, especially in the outdoor area. There was a 20 leva entrance fee, but it included a DJ set. The only downside was that the door staff wasn't friendly at all and in general the security staff that were walking around had a bit of an aggressive attitude, but overall, it was a lovely experience.
Αριαδνη Α — Google review
I had a mixed experience with the staff. Marta, one of the bartenders, asked me to step away from the bar since it’s for ordering only, but the way she said it came across as very blunt and dismissive. A simple polite explanation would have gone a long way. On the other hand, Angie, another bartender, addressed the same thing but did so respectfully and with a positive attitude. She even explained that Marta speaks this way to everyone. My feedback is that consistency matters, when one staff member is courteous and another is unnecessarily abrasive, it leaves guests with a negative impression.

The place itself was nice and interesting — definitely a great choice for a pub, especially if it's your first time in the city and you want to experience something different. Bar
Perched atop the Walltopia building in Poligona, CABANA Rooftop Beach Bar is a versatile and upscale destination in Sofia. By day, it offers a relaxing poolside experience with comfortable loungers and bean bags, while at night, it transforms into a lively hotspot. The venue boasts a rooftop pool and bar, along with stunning 360-degree views of Sofia.
So cool rooftop bar with pool. The food is amazing. Of course the prices are a bit higher but it is normal for a place like this.

+ Great music (deep vocal house), lovely pool, the water is really warm, which I liked a lot. They have amazing pool animals and air mattresses in the water, on which you can lie and chill. The service was very friendly. - The food was really bad, we ordered a salad, main and a fruit bowl, which were all unacceptably bad for the money we paid. The front row designer sun beds (45 BGN) look very cool, but are extremely uncomfortable and I would not recommend them at all. Overall a great experience, I would go there again!

Great place, great food, great vibe. Absolutely lovely place to visit when you want to leave the city behind but you don’t want to leave the city :)

A bit smaller than it looks. If you're not giving out a haughty "celebrity" vibe, you'll be ignored. Sunbeds cost 35 BGN each, which is not disclosed upfront, and you will not be issued a receipt for. Amazing smells from the kitchen everywhere.

Very very bad attitude from the staff, inadequate... I was there with my colleagues, we spent there the entire day working. The staff was EXTREMELY RUDE, they treated us as we were criminals...super unprofessional, such places must be closed. The food was cooked in a way a three year old can cook it, you order meat, and you just receive a piece of meat in the plate, with NOTHING ELSE on it. Obviously the view is great, and looks cozy, but those people should not be allowed to work with people. VERY ROOD.

They wanted to charge 8000 leva for a private event lasting 7 hours. I think the management thinks a bit too much about the place, since both of the ladders of the pool is broken so is one of the toilet, which is not separated for males and females btw. I think for the price they charge this kind of maintenance is unacceptable.

Great place, awful implementation. We waited for 30 minutes until we went to the bar to ask whether the place is self serving. It turned out it’s not but we ordered from the bar anyway. I got a Hendrick’s gin & tonic. It was served in a water glass with small peaces of ice and a straw - anyone who likes gin & tonic must know how unprofessional this is. It did have a slice of cucumber at least. Although it was literally a slice. I’m not coming back.

High class pool rooftop bar, probably the best in town. They could clean the toilets and be a bit cheaper for rental of the sunbeds . Then they would have had 5 stars but I recommend
