Tomonoura, located 14 kilometers south of Fukuyama Station along the Seto Inland Sea coastline, is a centuries-old fishing village known for its well-preserved traditional Japanese houses, shops, and temples. It has been a prosperous port town since ancient times and is mentioned in the Manyoshu, an 8th-century anthology of Japanese poetry.
Quiet, clean and beautiful town. Similar to Ise bay in that houses 🏠 are lined up along the bay, doing various small businesses like cafes, souvenirs, crafts and museum exhibits. Walk or drive along the small roads from the tourist centre to the stone lighthouse to find resemblances to the Ponyo movie 🎥. Around 1 hour or so is a good amount of time to explore this seaside town.

A Park Where Stillness Speaks Tucked away from the city’s rhythm, this park doesn’t ask for attention—it offers quiet instead. Shaded paths, gentle water, and the hush of wind through leaves create a space where your thoughts can slow down and settle. It’s not grand, not crowded—just calm. A place where time stretches, and silence feels like a companion. If you’re looking for peace, not spectacle, this is where you’ll find it.
Bel Z — Google review
Lovely relaxing spot to visit. There were very few people there when we visited mid-week. Took a bus to and from Fukuyama station, which took about 40mins. There are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby and lots of other interesting places to visit within walking distance.
Peter L — Google review
Calm and secluded area. Very quiet fishing port, bus ride is definitely long enough for you to catch a short nap from hiroshima station. Shops was mostly closed when I went not sure if there was any special occasion and most shops were closed during the day. But a few restaurants are opened, definitely do try them out!

Highly recommending Tomonoura for anyone who loves sunsets, sea, and slow moments. I found peace in this little port town. 💙🏝️

Historical landmark
Fukuyama Castle, located just a short walk from JR Fukuyama Station, offers stunning views of the castle from the Shinkansen platforms. It is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 castles and features free parking with additional paid options if needed. The castle boasts a museum with rich video content and recently completed reconstruction of the castle tower equipped with modern facilities. Visitors can enjoy beautiful exterior views and a great vantage point from the top.
We were able just to leave our luggage at the station and visiting the city for half a day. The castle and the area are well maintained. On top of an hill it gives you great view of the city. Would recommend you to do the museum, it’s inexpensive and interesting.

Fukuyama Castle – A Rebuilt Legacy with Panoramic Views Located just a short walk from Fukuyama Station in Hiroshima Prefecture, Fukuyama Castle is a striking reminder of Japan’s feudal past. Though much of the original structure was lost during World War II, the main keep (tenshukaku) has been carefully reconstructed and stands today as a proud symbol of the city’s history, resilience, and cultural heritage. Originally built in 1622 by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Fukuyama Castle was a strategically important stronghold during the Edo period. Its reconstruction in 1966 restored much of its former glory, and recent renovations have further enhanced the experience for visitors. The elegant white façade of the keep, flanked by stone walls and cherry trees, is especially beautiful during spring when the blossoms bloom across the castle grounds. Inside, the castle houses a museum offering exhibits on the local samurai culture, weaponry, armor, and the castle’s own tumultuous history. Displays are modern and informative, with English signage available for most exhibits. From the top floor, panoramic views stretch out over Fukuyama city and the surrounding area, offering a lovely reward for the climb. The surrounding Fukuyama Castle Park is a favorite among locals for walking, picnicking, and seasonal festivals. It’s especially popular during cherry blossom season, when the area transforms into a lively and photogenic hanami spot. Fukuyama Castle may not have the same name recognition as Himeji or Osaka, but it offers a quieter, more local experience steeped in history and charm. For travelers exploring the Chugoku region—or anyone passing through Fukuyama—it’s well worth a stop.
Paul P — Google review
What a beautiful castle. Wasn’t crowded at all. The interior is surprisingly updated with an elevator and air conditioning. Lots of nice displays and the huge garden is absolutely fantastic. Koi ponds, huge statues and bonsai. Definitely worth visiting if you’re headed towards Himeji which is about 40 minutes away by Shinkansen. Castle is white in the front and black in the rear. Nice place!
Ty M — Google review
Stunning castle in Fukuyama, worth the trip. Inside there is a small shooting gallery, sort of.
Umesh W — Google review
Even though the original castle was destroyed during the bombing campaign during ww2, the wall sections were mostly spared and the castle itself rebuilt. It's the more museum type castle, as is the case for any non original castle. There are exhibits inside that have some English and videos that have subtitles. I felt that there was enough english to let you know what was going on and not feel like you're totally lost. They have two interactive game type things in there: One where you ride an animatronic horse through the castle (racing game) and the other where you shoot a matchlock rifle to hit a virtual target. I seemed to be the only person to participate while I was there. Overall, not very busy castle and it wasn't crowded at all. They say you visited Fukuyama castle if you took the train, since technically the station is on the original castle grounds, but why not make a stop here and see the full thing?
Brandon S — Google review
Fukuyama Castle is a beautiful and historic site that you should definitely visit. The castle's construction is impressive. Whenever you're in the area, make sure to go and enjoy exploring this remarkable piece of history!

Wow, what a beautiful castle. I'm so glad I took the time to go to Fukuyama. Beautiful castle full of beautiful rooms and amazing culture. The top of the castle with such amazing views... wow!! Definitely a place to visit. The garden right next door to the castle is absolutely breathtaking. Definitely go see both!

Step into a world of vintage cars, antique clocks, and other fascinating relics at the Fukuyama Auto & Clock Museum. This unique venue offers a diverse collection that includes automobiles from Japan and beyond, as well as an impressive array of timepieces. Visitors can stroll through the expansive grounds while admiring these historical treasures and even have the opportunity to touch and photograph many of the exhibits.
Truly enjoyed my visit to this museum. The exhibits are old and brought back memories of the yester-years when I was young. Also, I was allowed to sit in the vintage cars to take photos! It was also very fun getting my hands on the mobile music making cart, the old telephones and the straddles of the old horse carriage. The clocks of the Edo period were still clicking away!
Daphne P — Google review
A funky little museum covering mostly cars and then clocks after. Was fun being able to get into the cars as well, seeing how uncomfortable and difficult to get they were back in history. The odd few wax models of particular characters there. I’d say worth going if you’re really into cars, otherwise won’t be much time spent here.
Dave — Google review
Wild I came upon this place by chance just randomly looking on Google maps. Never heard of it before, but so glad I made the walk over. They have a bit of everything old and vintage. Cars, planes, military equipment, old machinery, clocks, etc. The best part is that they let you interact with the exhibits. Machines can be cranked and cars can be sat in. Their phamplet says they believe that history should be interacted with and not be something left in the past. Will things get worn out quicker? Almost certainly. But it definitely was an amazing experience being able to actually sit in the driver's seat. Definitely a must do in fukuyama!
Brandon S — Google review
Truly impressive! Hopped a quick shin from iwakuni to Fukuyama, walked about 10 minutes and literally found myself in heaven! As an amateur horologist, aviation and automobile enthusiast this place is like a mini mecca! First off photos do not do the collection size justice. The amount of antique clocks, watches, pocket watches, pianos, toys, phones, fuel pumps, vehicles, rocking horses, machines, airplanes, and motorcycles is mind blowing. A lifetime of incredible collecting for the average Joe to go and enjoy. These cars are not locked away. If you can fit in them or on them, you're welcome enter the vehicles and sit on the motorcycles and even sit in the airplane!! My son was over the moon while I was blown away by the amount of history and rarity at my fingertips. Honestly, it is one of the best museums I have visited in Japan and absolutely worth the trip. Short walk from the train station and lots to do and see in the area. Only 900 yen to enter for adults and worth ever yen! Can easily spend over an hour without even trying. Great photo opportunities in every nook and cranny of the museum, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable talking to me about the owner and items in the museum (when she had a spare moment). I will be going back again just to enjoy this collection before I leave Japan. Go, enjoy, and support this incredible collection of history!!!!
Keith A — Google review
I set this museum as today’s cycling destination. The collection includes automobiles, clocks, and aircraft from earlier times. Personally, I especially enjoy seeing the cars — it’s fascinating to imagine how people used to drive back then. The numerous clocks on the wall were also quite impressive.

A must visit when you are in the area! I’m glad to see a Japanese rendition of an oldtimer museum The staff is friendly and there is a great gift shop! Elvis was also present 🕺
Bryan V — Google review
Excellent museum with lots of old unique cars and clocks. Easy to find. About a 20 minute walk from Fukuyama Station going past Fukuyama Castle. Much bigger than I expected with lots of cars and buses in display on the road on either side of the museum.
Team L — Google review
A VERY large variety of antiques and collectibles, beyond just clocks and automobiles. Definitely recommend going and giving yourself well over an hour, and you can also open and even sit inside of most vehicles (depending on how large you are, as I had a few bumps trying to go in and out at 5’11”/180cm). Extremely nice and helpful staff. If you’re interested in history at all, definitely go, as there are little corners with different bits of history tucked away throughout the buildings (and other vehicles/ultralights outdoors).

It took 30 minutes by bus from Fukuyama station. It is a bit difficult to go there during normal day. But during holiday, they have direct bus. It is small compare to universal studios or desney resort. I love the dinosaur park. It look like real dinosaur. The water park open during summer only.

My kids enjoyed it . I suggest you go there earlier so you can enjoy all the rides.
Bhonsai — Google review
It's a really small amusement park but really fun for the kids! Also my husband and I really enjoyed it! We would definitely go back if it was closer to our house. The ladies that work at the pasta and pizza shop are not very nice or friendly. It's quite small so the hours that it's open are perfect to spend a fun day!
Stay C — Google review
If going during the off season, you can just drive right there and enter. During the weekday of the off season, rides were open and the staff was super friendly. Many shops and restaurant spots were closed. The Orange pool area looked to be fun. It will open in a week or two.

Senkoji Temple Mountain Ropeway offers a breathtaking experience with sweeping views of hills, the bay, and Onomichi town from a cable car that takes you to a hilltop lookout. The roundtrip tickets for the ropeway cost 1,000 yen and once at the top, visitors can enjoy exploring Senkoji Temple located on the mountain. Additionally, there are other attractions such as Onomichi Museum and Sensoji Park nearby.
Our long hour drive , travel going to Senkoji Temple is all worth it. I love the place, you can stay there for the wholeday, you bring your own food and just set on the bench while feeling the atmosphere of autumn breeze. For parking area, you need to pay 600¥. Food are availabe in the area, you see poster sign . A must visit place❣️

If there is space available, RVs can also be parked in the bus parking lot near the cable car station. The staff at the ropeway reception were incredibly kind and gave us very helpful advice. It’s really fun to take the ropeway one way up from the foot of the mountain and then walk back down through the slopes
Emma S — Google review
The short cable car (Ropeway) ride to the top felt safe and well managed. The view is quite spectacular and well worth taking the time to experience. It was not crowded and a very short queue to get tickets (return is cheaper than 2 x 1 way)
Stephen M — Google review
If you are able, I would walk up the various paths up to the rope way, if not the RT fare was under ¥1000 per person. Highly advise taking the side streets up as there are cats, drawings of cats and cat photos everywhere
Leo B — Google review
We chose to ride the rope way up and walk back. We left around 10am and we’re back in an hour. The ropeway car took around 30 people. It’s a scenic view if you can get a window seat. The walk down passed the temple with lots of lookout spots.
Philip L — Google review
I traveled Onomichi a few times. Lots of vintage houses are built on a steep hills which make this city view very special. It's located in eastern Hiroshima prefcture and there is a port. Somehow, lots of street cats are popular too. If you are not confident to climb up steep hills, there is a Senkoji temple mountain ropeway which take you from the bottom to the top. It's worth to visit. :))

There are restrooms and a rest area and smoking area at the ferry terminal, so even if the weather wasn't great, it was still a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Actually, a full circumnavigation of the island would probably take half a day to reach the top, but I didn't have that much time, so I just enjoyed the island's fascinating scenery and created some wonderful memories! (Translated by Google) I visited Sensuijima to participate in an event in Tomonoura. It took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to arrive from Okayama. There are about 3 ferries every hour, and a round trip for adults costs 240 yen. Everyone visiting the island seemed to like power spots, and even though it was December, the weather was very nice, so people were going barefoot at the beach, putting their feet in the sea, and being earthed! Unfortunately, there was a fire in the bathroom a few days ago, so I wasn't able to use it. The road leading to Goshikiiwa was closed due to falling rocks. I had heard that you can go around the area in an hour, but I was pretty relaxed and the hour and a half passed in the blink of an eye, so if I can take a bath again and go to Goshikiiwa, I can easily spend half a day there. It felt like We walked around Senningaoka and then rode on the back of a dragon. Although it was a shame that the road was closed, I felt that spending time relaxing by myself was a luxury, and I would like to go to Mt. Omi in clothes that allow me to move more easily next time. For a small entrance fee you are treated to a famous wonderful view of Sensui Island and a nice spot to relax for a while. There were very few other visitors when we were there, mid-week, so it was perfect. We arrived here by bus from Fukuyama station, the bus ride took about 40 minutes.

Nice Shrine with a beautiful view over the sea and the islands. Some small entrance fee is charged, but I would say worth it for the view. The shrine itself is nicer from the outside...

Lovely rustic temple located in the fishing village of Tomonoura. The temple is located on a hill with beautiful views. Inside of the temple boasts a panoramic view of the islands which you can visit by ferry. They have a goshuin stamp available along with a variety of amulets or omamori. They have English literature about the history of the temple as well.

The Irohamaru Exhibit Hall is a small yet informative museum that showcases the historical Irohamaru accident. This incident involved a collision between the Irohamaru and a ship belonging to Kishu-Han, during which Sakamoto Ryoma, the founder of Kaientai, played a crucial role in securing compensations. The museum not only provides insight into this event but also offers an opportunity to learn about the life of Sakamoto Ryoma.
This museum shows that Irohamaru-accident. This was a ship accident between Irohamaru and the ship which belonged to Kishu-Han. The company called Kaientai conducted Irohamaru and they got an accident around this area. Kishu-Han was so strong that it was difficult to be against them at that time. However, thanks to Sakamoto Ryoma, who founded the company, Kaientai could receive compensations. You can know the life of Sakamoto Ryoma adding to Irohamaru-accident. This museum was a little small but there are a lot of things to see. A museum of the famous debate for ship compensation of the famous Sakamoto Ryouma. He is one of the icons of Japan modernization. This museum is telling her story his ship accident and show his hiding place “ such that, he had many enemies”. (Translated by Google) The steamship Iroha Maru, purchased by the Ozu clan and operated by Ryoma Sakamoto's Kaientai, collided with the steamship Meiko Maru, owned by the Kishu clan, while sailing in the Seto Inland Sea, causing major damage and heading towards Tomonoura. This exhibition hall is named after the Irohamaru Incident, which involved a maritime accident in which the ship sank while being towed, and the compensation negotiations that followed. Ryoma stirred up public opinion in order to gain an advantage in negotiations and thoroughly damaged the reputation of the Kishu clan. The Kishu domain was engulfed in smoke and exhausted under the banner of universal public law. What they are doing is the same as the current Communist Party and Constitutional Democratic Party. He can hardly be called the behavior of a samurai, and is more like an unscrupulous merchant or a monster complainer. As a result, the ratio of errors was 10 for the Meiko Maru and 0 for the Iroha Maru, resulting in a total victory for the Kaientai. This was despite subsequent research suggesting that the Iroha Maru was also at fault, and that the Iroha Maru's cargo and damage amounts had been greatly inflated. Ichijiro Shigeta, who was in charge of the Kishu clan, was a hard worker who worked hard to get promoted from a humble beginning, but his life was ruined because of his involvement with Ryoma. The compensation that Ryoma stole was 80,000 ryo, which is more than 16 billion yen in modern terms, but he himself was brutally murdered without receiving any of the money. There are various theories about who was responsible for Ryoma's assassination, including Tadazaburo Sasaki of the Mimawarigumi, Kuwajiro Oishi of the Shinsengumi, Hajime Saito, and even Hanjiro Nakamura of Satsuma, but there have been rumors since then that he was a renegade of the Kishu clan. did. However, that would be too unsightly, so perhaps the name of a famous swordsman of the time was mentioned. And well, if you do something like this, no matter who kills you, it will only be considered divine punishment. This exhibition is strictly from Ryoma's side, so while it praises Ryoma's negotiation skills, it does not criticize his greedy methods. I think it is better suited for light users, but the content is undeniably thin. It's not worth making your schedule to see it, but it's a great way to kill time. Also, regarding the compensation that Ryoma never received, it is actually unclear what happened to him after that. It's only a myth, but there's a rumor that the money was embezzled and used to fund the founding of a certain conglomerate...Oh, it looks like someone's here, so please excuse me.

We visited the Museum and Gardens in Mid-July 2025, on our great tour of Japan, the socalled "Golden route" as a kind of rest stop between busy megacities. It is a very beautiful estate and park, with some lovely old temples and other buildings reconstructed here, and a spectacular newbuild for a Zen experience in total darkness. You can have lunch with extra big udon. The highlight was the introduction in Zen Meditation by an english speaking monk, who had travelled especially from Kyoto to give this instruction to us. It was one, if not THE, highlight of our Japan trip. It was very quiet too (even in July) outside our little group of 4, we saw only 3 or max 4 visitors on the whole estate and park. Absolutely recommended !

It is located in Shinshoji. The garden here is very beautiful, too. And the white pattern of a rock is worth seeing. The building was built by nawa, a famous Hiroshima-born man. That has a strange shape, but I think it is good. It's a half-hour system with max 20 people, but you hardly have to wait, so enjoy it whenever you want.

It is highly recommended to reserve more than 2 hours for this place. Due to the light bus schedule that we could only enjoy partial of Shinshoji this time. The experience here should be relax and joyful. We also enjoyed the 五觀偈 Shinsho-ji udon at 光明堂 (1200 yen for one set). The most special part for me is to experience how monks eat these foods. The Unsui chopstick is cool even to Chinese people like me. To be honest, I still did not get a clue about the 洸庭’s performance for the entire 30 mins. Last but not the least, I would like to express my appreciation to the staff again. They are super helpful! They guide us how to take bus to our next destination. Ootake Jutaku, also known as the Ota Family Residence, is a significant historical site in Tomonoura that offers a glimpse into the prosperous merchant families of the Edo period. This complex consists of nine well-preserved buildings, including the main residence and brewery warehouse, showcasing early modern merchant architecture in the Seto Inland Sea.
Beautifully preserved Edo period Japanese residence and attached sake brewery. The rooms were pristine and very spacious. The sake brewery has been for the most part untouched with the original tools and barrels. A must visit residence when in the quaint fishing village of Tomonoura.

This was a memorable visit. We were just two of us at that time and the 3 elderly people there were just waiting for people to come visit so they could do the tour. We were with a lovely lady who read the English explanations for us and it was very helpful to understand all the different parts of the buildings. It s a huge house that served as a sake brewery and shop as well as an inn. GO!!!!
Amandine P — Google review
This house was built during 18th century and some famous nobles stayed here for a few days. It has some attractive points to see such as warehouse, garden, ceiling and wall. The family who lived here sold “Homei-shu” during Edo period all over Japan. And then, they produced it here so there are some warehouses. The reason why they could build such a great house was they were allowed to sell Homei-shu dominantly by Han, the lord. Thanks to its policy, they could make fortune.

Jodo-ji Temple, located at the west end of Temple Walk, is a significant site of Shingon Buddhism and holds two national treasures. It is also part of the sacred Chugoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. The temple has historical ties to Takauji Ashikaga and features various artifacts related to him. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and even hike up Jodoji Mountain behind the temple for a scenic experience.
Fantastic temple located in the end/beginning of the temple walk. When we went there, the doors into the back of the temple and the quarters where the monks are staying were open. So we had a great experience seeing all the beautiful tatami rooms with fantastic paintings.

The main hall and five-story pagoda are national treasures.👍 After climbing the stairs and passing through the gate, you'll see the main hall directly ahead. Built at the end of the Kamakura period, it's a beautiful, well-proportioned building. The principal image, the Eleven-Faced Kannon, is only open to the public once every 33 years. Unfortunately, last year (2024) was the last year, so I probably won't be able to see it in my lifetime (lol). I'm always determined to get it right this time, but it never turns out the way I want. 💦 This time, I'll show you some decent photos. 👍 If you think it's beautiful, next time, see it for yourself. It's a temple I've been familiar with since childhood, and I was once again deeply moved by its rich history! Myo-in Temple is actually home to two National Treasures built during the Muromachi period. One is the National Treasure Main Hall. Built at the end of the Kamakura period, it is the oldest surviving example of an eclectic style. It is an incredibly valuable building, combining Japanese and Chinese architectural techniques. The other is the National Treasure Five-Story Pagoda. The fifth-oldest example of Japanese-style architecture in Japan, dating from the early Muromachi period. I used to think of it as just an ordinary temple, but I was reminded of how special it is to have such a precious, National Treasure-level historical heritage so close to my everyday life. The five-story pagoda and main hall bathed in the first sunrise of the year were truly majestic, and it was the perfect start to the New Year. This is a truly wonderful temple that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in Japan's ancient history and architecture, as well as locals, to come and rediscover the importance of this national treasure! Onomichi Ramen Betcha is a laid-back eatery that specializes in delectable noodle soups featuring BBQ pork or seafood. They also offer gyoza and fried chicken as tasty accompaniments. One of the standout features that sets this ramen joint apart from its nearby competitors is the option to enhance your bowl with succulent fresh oysters, adding a unique texture and flavorful twist.
Food and atmosphere was very nice. It had some people on waiting line but it was quick enough and I had a time to decide on my order. Menu has a lot of options of ramen and other dishes. And location is very close to Onomichi station, that is easy to come and maybe have a walk on the riverside after dinner. Happy with my choice of restaurant.

Onomichi is famous for its ramen, and ベッチャー truly lives up to the reputation! Their ramen features a rich kombu and soy sauce-based broth that is both deep in flavor and incredibly satisfying. Using thick, fatty slices of roasted pork as topping is another signature of the dish. The noodles are homemade, with a perfectly chewy texture and a distinct wheat flavor that enhances the overall experience. Another must-try here is the oysters, a specialty of the region. They are incredibly fresh, prepared in a way that keeps their natural flavors intact, making them both refreshing and delicious. If you’re in Onomichi, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended! By the way, staff is friendly and the restroom is clean!!!

It was comfortable, and our room had a toilet and a bath. The other rooms didn't seem to have toilets. I was a little surprised that the toothpaste was salt, lol. ○ About the Food The food was more delicious and sophisticated than I expected. It was very tasty, and I could really taste the flavors of the ingredients. For breakfast, we had sea bream chazuke, which I thought might be a bit large, but I ate it all up in no time. I was full from the morning, but it was very delicious. With everything included, it was great value for money and a really great inn! The stained glass is beautiful, and it was fun to spot Ghibli characters scattered throughout the inn! The service was relaxed and not tense, so I'd definitely like to stay again. I highly recommend this inn to fans of Ghibli, Sakamoto Ryoma, and delicious food!

Nestled just a short stroll from the historic Fukuyama Castle, Bingo Gokoku Shrine is a serene spot that pays homage to the spirits of war heroes. Originally known as Abe Shrine, it transformed into Bingo Gokoku Shrine over time and now features impressive stone monuments dedicated to those who served. The shrine's elevated location offers stunning views of the castle’s distinctive black iron walls, especially from nearby hills.

This participation was made possible by the connection of serving at Susanoo Shrine the day after visiting in March. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. I went to the site to express my gratitude to the heroes who fought for Japan through "action". Although it was my first time participating, I was grateful to be in charge of cleaning the shrine grounds. Right next to the heroes, I carefully cleaned up each and every pebble covered in fallen leaves. Despite the words of the deputy chief priest, "You don't have to be so nervous..." (laughs), it was impressive that he was surprised later and said, "Wow!" After the service, the chief priest gave a lecture. It was a warm time with laughter. We also experienced "diving into the stone statue of Abe Masahiro." At that time, I received another reservation from a young man who was planning to travel abroad! The message was, "The effect was excellent, so I would like to request another treatment before I leave for Norway." It was as if I had received a blessing from God. After the war, it was elevated to a special shrine status. Bingo Shrine and Abe Shrine merged to become Bingo Gokoku Shrine on March 11, 1957. Established in 1868 by Abe Masahiro, former lord of the Fukuyama domain, it originally enshrined 40 heroes who died in the Battle of Masuda in Iwami Province and the Battle of Hakodate during the Bo-Choshu War. Since then, the shrine has been dedicated to the heroic spirits from Bingo Province who died for the nation and the public, including those in Saga, Taiwan, the Satsuma Rebellion, the Sino-Japanese War, the Northern Qing Dynasty War, the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese-German War, Manchuria, Shanghai, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Greater East Asia War. Compared to most museums in the area, there was a lot of material in English to make things easier to understand if your Japanese is bad like mine! If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking it out!

(Translated by Google) I wasn't really interested in the museum because it was a museum that displayed the history of footwear such as geta and zori sandals, but it was better than I expected. Footwear and toys from all over the world and all eras are on display, and there are a tremendous number of exhibition rooms. There was also a wealth of content other than footwear, including belongings of people connected to Fukuyama, such as Kiichi Miyazawa and Carp players, and works by Taro Okamoto. It's only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and there aren't many customers, but it's well worth a visit. The admission fee of 300 yen is also a good deal. You can take pictures of everything except Kiichi Miyazawa, so it is also recommended for influencers. It's definitely worth the 300 yen admission fee. The admission fee was cheap, so I assumed there would only be one or two exhibition rooms, but there are actually eight exhibition rooms, and even exhibits in the hallways. While the name "Footwear and Toy Museum" suggests, it's divided into exhibitions of footwear, toys like tops and battledores, and traditional crafts. There was also an exhibit on former Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa. I didn't know this, but apparently he was from Fukuyama. He was the prime minister around the time I was old enough to understand, so it was fascinating to see. ... As it is the city of geta, there are various types of footwear on display. There are also exhibits of old toys. The highlight was the exhibit of Navajo dolls, with hundreds of them, and it was thrilling to see them as if they might come to life. I think it was a special exhibit. It was an interesting museum that displayed toys that colored the lives of the common people in a form that contrasted with the footwear that was necessary for the lives of the common people, but it is managed by Fukuyama City and is run mainly by volunteers. It was renewed in 2024, and a corner was set up to praise the achievements of local politician Kiichi Miyazawa. What was good about it ◇The footprint square that has become a symbol is a masterpiece by artist Taro Okamoto. A must-see. ◇Athletes' shoes are very interesting. Giant Baba's shoes are amazing. ◇The craftsman's house on the site was evicted to make way for the museum, but it remains as it is as a result of the founder paying homage to the people who opposed eviction until the very end. What I was curious about ◆Kiichi Miyazawa's achievements are great, but I think pros and cons are divided as to whether he is necessary for a museum that focuses on the lives of ordinary people. ◆Toys are thought to be aimed at children, but dolls illuminated by subdued lighting may be too stimulating for young children. ◆I hope that it will be managed by Fukuyama City and will not become a museum whose exhibition intentions are misaligned. It is said that the original Homeishu was brewed at the current Ota family residence as "Jurokumi Jioh Homeishu". In an era when food culture was not as rich as it is today, Homeishu's sweetness and medicinal properties were highly valued. Homeishu, which was both alcohol and medicine, was sold at high prices to feudal lords and wealthy merchants as a specialty product representing the Fukuyama domain. In addition, many Homeishu sake bottles have been discovered in the village of Iwami Ginzan, which is registered as a World Heritage Site, proving that it was highly valued as a source of nutrition, strength, and vitality for the people of that time. ▼ Okamoto Kametaro Honten, inheritor of Nakamura Kichibei's original "Homeishu" During the Edo period, only the original Nakamura family had exclusive permission from the lord of Fukuyama to manufacture and sell Homeishu. The Okamoto family (Okamoto Kametaro Honten) started its business in the sake industry in 1855, when Homeishu was still the exclusive property of the Nakamura family. Later, as times changed and the Meiji period began, the monopoly on Homeishu was lifted, and many breweries, including our company, became involved in Homeishu production. In the latter half of the Meiji period, the original Nakamura family closed its doors as a Homeishu brewery, and the Okamoto family inherited the Nakamura family's traditional signboard and all of its tools, which continue to this day. The "big dragon signboard" enshrined inside Okamoto Kametaro Honten and the old Bizen Homeishu jar on the left are also said to be historic items inherited from the Nakamura family at that time. And I don't know why, but it's not piping hot. Even though I have a cat tongue, I can eat it without fussing. The conger eel tempura bowl is topped with two very small conger eel tempura pieces, shiso tempura, and chopped okra. I put some grated yam in a teapot on top of it, and it's still sloshing around. The okra was unusually sticky, but it was delicious with the yam and sweet sauce. Beautiful castle that has very nice surrounding grounds. The gardens are worth a tour as well as the inside of the castle, which is very modern. I think most tourists visit the more popular castles in Himeji and Osaka but Fukuyama castle is definitely worth the visit. No crowds and very well kept. Good place for relax on the open space
Aditiyo — Google review
It is extremely annoying that 90% of the names of the roses are not written clearly on plates in Japanese and Latin alphabet. For most of the roses you have to go on your knees and crawl search underneath the bushes to find a small strap with handwritten katakana on it and do a Google translation. And even that doesn't work in many places because those tags are dirty and totally unreadable. Only at the section of princesses they have proper name plates. Especially when you come to such a park it is to inspire yourself which roses to purchase. So that's why such naming that also includes the name of the breeder and the year of release are very important. The design of the park itself is very beautiful and when we went there the roses were in full bloom and looked very healthy, no disease on their leaves. Stunning and very enviable. It is also very beautiful how they have the white iceberg blooming at a higher level and underneath the lavender color cat mint grasses that fill up the space gracefully. Also nice that they have many modern roses especially those from Rosa Orientis and Kawamoto. Everything is kept extremely clean there are no weeds around the roses, a very well kept manicured park worthy of such a name of the city of roses.

(Translated by Google) I came from Matsuyama on a mountain road, so I visited after temple number 58. There is a parking fee of 100 yen at the donation office. From the Shikoku 88 Temples Association website There have been many shipwrecks in this area along the Seto Inland Sea coast. Eifuku-ji Temple has been worshiped since ancient times as a temple for safety on land and sea, and for increased longevity and prosperity, as Kobo Daishi performed a memorial service for the sea god here. According to the legend, it was during the Kōnin era that Kobo Daishi made a pilgrimage to this area at the request of Emperor Saga (reigned 809-23). He performed a goma offering ceremony on the summit of Mt. Futō, praying for the easing of wind and waves on the inland sea and shipwrecks. On the day of the completion of the prayer, the wind and waves subsided, and the shadow of Amida Buddha floated over the sea. It is said that the temple was founded when a hall was built on the summit of Mt. Futo and this statue of Amida Nyorai was enshrined as the principal image, and it became a temple prayed to by the emperor. Eifuku-ji also has a history of mixing Shinto and Buddhism, dating back to the Heian period. In 859, the first year of the Jogan era, the monk Gyokyo of Daian-ji Temple in Yamato received a divine message from Usa Hachiman (Oita) and was sailing offshore to found a branch shrine as Otokoyama Hachiman (Iwashimizu Hachiman) in Yamashiro (Kyoto), when he encountered a storm and was washed ashore here. However, since the shape of Mt. Futo resembles Otokoyama in Yamashiro, and the principal image of Amida Nyorai is also the local Buddha of Hachiman Daibosatsu, he is said to have invited Hachiman Myojin to be enshrined within the grounds, constructed a shrine building, and founded the combined Shinto and Buddhism of Katsuoka Hachiman-gu Shrine. This Hachiman shrine is also known as "Iyo's Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine," and there is a stone tower signpost with the name of the shrine and temple engraved on it, "Shikoku No. 57." Due to the Meiji government's Shinbutsu Bunri (law to separate Shinto and Buddhism), the temple was moved from its old location to its current location halfway up the mountain, and the shrine and temple became independent. The current Daishido hall was originally built by relocating a building that was at the top of the mountain. Also, a handwritten sutra book from the mid-Edo period in Eifuku-ji's possession has the name "Betto Eifuku-ji" written in ink, and another sutra book printed with a woodblock from the Edo period also has the name "Betto Eifuku-ji," indicating that sutra offerings have been made since ancient times, not just since the Meiji Restoration.

The temple's location, off the main road, allows for a particularly quiet and peaceful environment, free from the distractions of traffic and creating a tranquil atmosphere. The main hall, dedicated to Amitabha Buddha, is small yet simple and majestic. The grounds are neatly maintained, and since there weren't many worshippers during my visit, it's a great opportunity to stroll and explore the area at your leisure. Most interestingly, two stone frogs are placed on a table in the temple. They look adorable, adding a touch of intimacy to the small temple, as if silently protecting travelers. Overall, Eifuku-ji Temple is a modest little temple, lacking any particularly ornate architecture or grand grounds. However, this creates a simple atmosphere, making it a perfect stopover on the way. After your visit, sit back and listen to the wind and birdsong at the foot of the mountain before continuing your journey, and you'll feel completely relaxed. Conceptually, I have an issue with “reviewing” a Temple or a Shrine or any other spiritual site. Our world is overran by ratings and reviews, and here, a Temple, offers us an alternative, which is clearly lost in comparisons and ratings. So I rate them all Five Stars if you care to look up at the starry skies. I was hoping to find lodging recommendations near Kokubunji Temple in these Google reviews when I noticed several negative remarks about the monk who works in the office. I believe we carry the baggage of our own life and we tend to reflect it on to others … I had a very pleasant experience with this monk. He courteously stamped my notebook and did his calligraphy. Afterwards, I asked a favor if he could call a taxi for me, which he graciously did and kindly pointed me to the spot down in the parking where the taxi would meet me. Oh wondrous!
Peeceeh7 — Google review
I don't like leaving negative reviews however, I was quite disappointed by one of the monks who gave me my stamp as a henro. He barely looked at me, completed my stamp with little care and tossed my book back at me, with the book cover open and pages askew. Didn't say a single thing to me. I had to set my pages back and fix my book when I left the temple, I have never been treated so rudely by any of the temple staff before. I think someone else should be providing the stamps as this monk as I think he doesn't want to be there and he is representing the temple poorly

•Not really different from most shrines in Japan I accidentally went to this shrine, I was trying to get to Imabari station which was 5k away from me. I decided to hitchhike, but, instead of the station, the kind Japanese man brought me to this shrine and told me to pray. It was 5.1k away from the station, and no one else stopped for me so I had to walk the entire way.

(Translated by Google) 59-Ban Iyo Kokubunji Temple (Imabari City), whose main deity is Yakushi Nyorai, known as the guardian deity, is particularly appealing for those seeking health. The temple is conveniently located, with a flat, easy-to-walk path. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by a stone tablet, rather than a typical gate, creating a rustic yet aloof atmosphere. The first thing you see upon entering is the "Yakushi no Tsubasa" ("Medical Master Pot")—a small pot engraved with various body parts, said to be rubbed gently against the desired area, creating a particularly ceremonial atmosphere. Nearby, a statue of the master, known for its handshakes, is said to allow only one wish, a reminder of single-mindedness. These small details add a touch of interest to the entire visit. The main hall, while unassuming, exudes a sense of history, the grounds are immaculately maintained, and the overall atmosphere is tranquil. Tourists are rare, mostly locals, lending the area a sense of local charm. After visiting this temple, you'll feel at ease and at peace. For travelers on a journey, Kokubunji Temple offers a place to pause, relax, and refocus, a moment to calm your mind before setting off again. The Buddhist temple Ioji offers a breathtaking and captivating panorama. It is highly recommended to witness the sunrise from this vantage point. As the sun emerges from behind one of the nearby islands, it gradually illuminates the charming town below, creating an enchanting sight. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to learn about Tomonoura's rich history from a knowledgeable local resident. Another must-see attraction is located at the end of a relatively easy path starting in the temple area.

Fukuyama Castle Park is a must-visit when in the area. The castle tour offers an affordable and informative experience, with simulators on the upper floors for both kids and adults. While photography is restricted in certain areas, the top floor provides a pleasant view of Fukuyama. The park surrounding the castle is free to enter and features well-maintained walking paths, making it a nice green space near Fukuyama train station.
Visiting Fukuyama Castle was a great experience for my wife and me. We came across the castle when we decided to walk around Fukuyama Station before heading back to Osaka. Compared to Osaka Castle, which was also an outstanding sight, this castle was not full of tourists and was nearly empty. This provided us with the opportunity to take an endless number of pictures. The area was beautiful and very clean. We spent hours admiring the beauty of the castle and the surrounding area. There is a rest area near the castle that is adorned with beautiful roses and flowers. Fukuyama Station has a lot of beauty around it. If you are ever at this station, I recommend that you step out for a few minutes to behold and appreciate the beauty of this castle.

The castle/museum: The castle tour/museum was 500¥ which was affordable to me. Had some cool simulators to play on the upper floors for both kids and adults. Lots of history. Not allowed to take photos for obvious reasons in certain parts. The view from the top was nice along with a good breeze. Pleasant weather made it nice. 5 floors, lots of stairs for those with good knees, elevator for those without. Nice view of fukuyama from the top floor. Free: You can walk around the courtyard for free if you want an affordable attraction to see. There is also a playground for young ones or those young at heart.

Fukuyama Castle park is basically the park area which surrounds the castle. It is usually free to enter and is a nice green space just a few minutes walk from the north exit of Fukuyama train station. There are toilets here and since the castle has recently been renovated the walking paths are in good condition. Currently until January 29th 2023 there is a teamLab exhibition in the park, mainly in front of the castle. This costs ¥1500. The lower part of the park below the outer castle walls is still free to enter and open 24 hours.

What you should know before visit Fukuyama-jo Park: - This area encircles the Castle of Fukuyama. - ‎The castle dates back to 1619, and both, park and castle are located in a hill. - ‎The area is small, and you should spend 1-2 hours visiting (including inside the tower). - ‎The ticket to visit the tower is 200¥. Monday is closed. - ‎The are is beside the Fukuyama train station, if this station is in your way, get off for a couple hours to visit it, and then continue your trip. I recommend visit this place.

(Translated by Google) I immediately went to visit. Inari Shrine next to Fukuyama Castle! Just before the date changed, all the locals started lining up. This year's New Year started with a visit to this shrine. It's great that the lanterns are giving a nice light! I was fascinated by the lanterns on the way up the stairs. (Translated by Google) I visited at the end of September 2025. After climbing the stairs called the West Approach from the park parking lot, the shrine appears at the end of a narrow alley. It was a small but quiet shrine. Perhaps because it was a weekday morning, there was no one else there when I visited. Looking around, I saw the castle tower of Fukuyama Castle right there. The castle tower, with its black walls, was different from the one in front, and this was directly behind the shrine, which is said to protect against evil spirits. I'm sure Sanzo, as mentioned in the history of the shrine, is always protecting the shrine. Thank you for allowing me to visit. I was surprised that the information about the shrine etc. was touch panel type. I was answered via the intercom at the company office. After writing the book, it will take some time to dry before it is returned to you, so I don't think it will appear on a different page. Above all, there was a pleasant scent of India ink. The footing on the west approach is a little rough, so please be careful. After a while, a Shinto priest followed them out of the shrine office and said, ``The cord is only for counting, so please go ahead and pray.'' After hearing these words, the worshipers began to pray. 🙏 ⛩️⛩️⛩️ Sanzo Inari Shrine is a shrine that was enshrined as a guardian deity by the founder of Fukuyama, Katsunari Mizuno, when he built Fukuyama Castle. When Katsunari was 21 years old, he set out on a journey to wander and train as a warrior from Kariya Castle in Mikawa Province. At that time, I received the sacred object that my grandfather, Prince Tadamasa, had received from Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine in Kyoto. Even during the battles in Shikoku and Kyushu, Lord Katsunari continued to hold onto the sacred object of worship, and was able to receive the blessings of Inari. In 1619, a castle was built in this area of Fukuyama, and Sanzo Inari Shrine was enshrined on the north side (Kimon) of the castle as the guardian deity of Bingo. Since then, successive generations of the lords of Fukuyama Castle have enshrined it directly, and there have been many branch shrines within the domain.

Central Park is a popular spot for various events and family fun. The park features a stage with power sources, as well as food truck spaces. While the exposed soil can be disappointing due to ongoing events, the new and clean restrooms are a plus, although lacking washlets in outdoor facilities. Adjacent to the park is Rosecom, a learning building that opens at 8:30, and a library opening at 10:00.
A nice place for morning walk, exercise. Adjacent with central library of Fukuyama, Hiroshima.

(Translated by Google) It's 6am in early September. As if the intense heat of the day was a lie, the park was a little chilly in the early morning, and the dew-drenched trees and grass were deep green. A person (dog) walking. Crowd performing radio calisthenics. Sit on a bench in the shade of a tree and study (or read). When I'm tired, I drink the coffee I brewed. Fresh, cool, uncontaminated air passes through your nasal passages. Moderate green. Benches placed at appropriate intervals. I feel like studying in nature helps me stay focused. In May 2025, the World Rose Congress, a global event called ROSE EXPO, and Fukuyama City's annual Rose Festival will be held at the same time, and this park will be bustling as one of the event venues. (Translated by Google) Opened in October 1989, this 832m-long arch bridge connects Tajima and the Numakuma Peninsula in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, with a maximum span of 219.6m. Hiroshima Prefectural Route 53 runs through it, and there's no toll. Normally, bridges are built in a straight line toward the island, but there's a reef in the middle of the strait, so Utsumi Ohashi Bridge takes advantage of this terrain with its unique, curved, L-shaped design. The sight of these two Nielsen-Lohse arch bridges connected together is very picturesque. I viewed the bridge from both sides, but the trees obscure the view from the Utsumi Ohashi parking lot on the Numakuma Peninsula side, so you'll need to walk a short distance toward the bridge. Directly below the bridge on the Tajima side is a floating pier with parking space, allowing you to enjoy a good view of the two arch bridges from below. Also, while not directly related to the bridge, the luxury cruise ship "Guntû" was passing under the bridge as I was driving across it. Since the ship wasn't docked at Bella Vista Marina, I thought I wouldn't be able to see it, but I was lucky. In addition to "Guntû," there are other world-leading shipbuilding companies nearby, so huge ships frequently pass under the bridge, and the Utsumi Bridge was built to ensure a height of 30m above the water.
