Castle
Historical landmark
Fukuyama Castle, located just a short walk from JR Fukuyama Station, offers stunning views of the castle from the Shinkansen platforms. It is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 castles and features free parking with additional paid options if needed. The castle boasts a museum with rich video content and recently completed reconstruction of the castle tower equipped with modern facilities. Visitors can enjoy beautiful exterior views and a great vantage point from the top.
We were able just to leave our luggage at the station and visiting the city for half a day. The castle and the area are well maintained. On top of an hill it gives you great view of the city. Would recommend you to do the museum, it’s inexpensive and interesting.

Worth the visit. Just right outside fukuyama station. You can visit inside the castle for 500 yen. Great view of Fukuyama city on top of the castle.
Philip Z — Google review
Fukuyama Castle – A Rebuilt Legacy with Panoramic Views Located just a short walk from Fukuyama Station in Hiroshima Prefecture, Fukuyama Castle is a striking reminder of Japan’s feudal past. Though much of the original structure was lost during World War II, the main keep (tenshukaku) has been carefully reconstructed and stands today as a proud symbol of the city’s history, resilience, and cultural heritage. Originally built in 1622 by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Fukuyama Castle was a strategically important stronghold during the Edo period. Its reconstruction in 1966 restored much of its former glory, and recent renovations have further enhanced the experience for visitors. The elegant white façade of the keep, flanked by stone walls and cherry trees, is especially beautiful during spring when the blossoms bloom across the castle grounds. Inside, the castle houses a museum offering exhibits on the local samurai culture, weaponry, armor, and the castle’s own tumultuous history. Displays are modern and informative, with English signage available for most exhibits. From the top floor, panoramic views stretch out over Fukuyama city and the surrounding area, offering a lovely reward for the climb. The surrounding Fukuyama Castle Park is a favorite among locals for walking, picnicking, and seasonal festivals. It’s especially popular during cherry blossom season, when the area transforms into a lively and photogenic hanami spot. Fukuyama Castle may not have the same name recognition as Himeji or Osaka, but it offers a quieter, more local experience steeped in history and charm. For travelers exploring the Chugoku region—or anyone passing through Fukuyama—it’s well worth a stop.
Paul P — Google review
What a beautiful castle. Wasn’t crowded at all. The interior is surprisingly updated with an elevator and air conditioning. Lots of nice displays and the huge garden is absolutely fantastic. Koi ponds, huge statues and bonsai. Definitely worth visiting if you’re headed towards Himeji which is about 40 minutes away by Shinkansen. Castle is white in the front and black in the rear. Nice place!
Ty M — Google review
Stunning castle in Fukuyama, worth the trip. Inside there is a small shooting gallery, sort of.
Umesh W — Google review
Fukuyama Castle is a beautiful and historic site that you should definitely visit. The castle's construction is impressive. Whenever you're in the area, make sure to go and enjoy exploring this remarkable piece of history!
Paramasivam G — Google review
Wow, what a beautiful castle. I'm so glad I took the time to go to Fukuyama. Beautiful castle full of beautiful rooms and amazing culture. The top of the castle with such amazing views... wow!! Definitely a place to visit. The garden right next door to the castle is absolutely breathtaking. Definitely go see both!

Fukuyama Castle Museum, also known as Fukuyama-jo, is a significant historical site located in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Originally built in 1622 by feudal lord Mizuno Katsushige, the castle has undergone reconstruction and now houses a museum featuring art and historical exhibits. Visitors can enjoy scenic views from the top of the castle. The surrounding area developed into a castle town, adding to its cultural importance.
Beautiful castle that has very nice surrounding grounds. The gardens are worth a tour as well as the inside of the castle, which is very modern. I think most tourists visit the more popular castles in Himeji and Osaka but Fukuyama castle is definitely worth the visit. No crowds and very well kept. It’s in the same vicinity as Himeji and Osaka castles so visit all three!
Ty M — Google review
Very nice experience. Though taking photos inside the museum is limited. I Suggest taking a friend with you as a lot to take pictures inside need someone very hard if alone
Rhein J — Google review
the castle is nice, but the highlight in Fukuyama is the small Japanese garden below the castle.
Maxim M — Google review
The location is so convenient for travel, it is next to Fukuyama station, only few minutes walk. I went there during Christmas time, it has night light show. It is a bit cold but amazing. There are few museums around it. It is not much different from other castle in Japan.
Monyrath S — Google review
One of the best castles and the train goes through the castle property.
The R — Google review
The castles throughout Japan are architecture gems. The ones that are still standing are true survivors. They been reconstructed and preserved. This one I think is more grand than the Hiroshima Castle, even though Hiroshima Castle surround areas are more open. I did enjoy visiting this place and definitely a must visit if you are in the area.
Julio I — Google review
Worth a visit if you are staying in Fukuyama, but not worth travelling for. Sadly, wasn't able to go inside on the day of visiting. Very pretty gardens let down by a bizarre display involving lots of inflatable eggs in the gardens.
Carl C — Google review
Reconstructed castle with a museum and cherry trees. The gardens and bath houses are well preserved. Right across the Fukuyama train station with plenty of rose plants. Well worth stopping and visiting if you’re taking the Shinkansen to Hiroshima from Tokyo.

Park
Fukuyama Castle Park is a must-visit when in the area. The castle tour offers an affordable and informative experience, with simulators on the upper floors for both kids and adults. While photography is restricted in certain areas, the top floor provides a pleasant view of Fukuyama. The park surrounding the castle is free to enter and features well-maintained walking paths, making it a nice green space near Fukuyama train station.
Visiting Fukuyama Castle was a great experience for my wife and me. We came across the castle when we decided to walk around Fukuyama Station before heading back to Osaka. Compared to Osaka Castle, which was also an outstanding sight, this castle was not full of tourists and was nearly empty. This provided us with the opportunity to take an endless number of pictures. The area was beautiful and very clean. We spent hours admiring the beauty of the castle and the surrounding area. There is a rest area near the castle that is adorned with beautiful roses and flowers. Fukuyama Station has a lot of beauty around it. If you are ever at this station, I recommend that you step out for a few minutes to behold and appreciate the beauty of this castle.

A great place to just relax and take in Hiroshima’s rich history. Don’t forget to visit Tago for Hiroshimayaki after!
Doyzkie B — Google review
Well worth a visit as it is a beautiful castle with a rich history. As of 2025, they are still in the process of updating to multi language signs, so much of the detailed history is in Japanese only. However, an English phamlet is provided free on entry with ticket purchases.
Anthony S — Google review
The castle/museum: The castle tour/museum was 500¥ which was affordable to me. Had some cool simulators to play on the upper floors for both kids and adults. Lots of history. Not allowed to take photos for obvious reasons in certain parts. The view from the top was nice along with a good breeze. Pleasant weather made it nice. 5 floors, lots of stairs for those with good knees, elevator for those without. Nice view of fukuyama from the top floor. Free: You can walk around the courtyard for free if you want an affordable attraction to see. There is also a playground for young ones or those young at heart.
Jackson P — Google review
This is a pretty nice castle. Not something you would go out your way to find, but if you are in the area a must, it is more modern than most and the insight feels less traditional than other ones. Definitely worth a trip.
Japan E — Google review
Fukuyama Castle park is basically the park area which surrounds the castle. It is usually free to enter and is a nice green space just a few minutes walk from the north exit of Fukuyama train station. There are toilets here and since the castle has recently been renovated the walking paths are in good condition. Currently until January 29th 2023 there is a teamLab exhibition in the park, mainly in front of the castle. This costs ¥1500. The lower part of the park below the outer castle walls is still free to enter and open 24 hours.
Judy O — Google review
What you should know before visit Fukuyama-jo Park: - This area encircles the Castle of Fukuyama. - ‎The castle dates back to 1619, and both, park and castle are located in a hill. - ‎The area is small, and you should spend 1-2 hours visiting (including inside the tower). - ‎The ticket to visit the tower is 200¥. Monday is closed. - ‎The are is beside the Fukuyama train station, if this station is in your way, get off for a couple hours to visit it, and then continue your trip. I recommend visit this place.

A must stop if you are going by. Literally a stone's throw away from the station and an absolute gem! Highly recommend night viewing

Fukuyama Station, operated by JR West, serves as a vital transportation hub connecting Fukuyama to various cities in the west such as Osaka and Hiroshima. Despite its relatively small size, the station is conveniently located near a shopping mall and offers recently refurbished facilities including cafes and dining options. The station's surroundings are adorned with beautiful rose trees, complementing Fukuyama's reputation as the 'rose city.' Additionally, visitors can easily access Fukuyama Castle and museum from the station.
I got this delicious grilled tuna set lunch at a restaurant inside Sun Station Terrace which is a shopping area right next to the Shinkansen central exit at Fukuyama Station.
Heythave — Google review
The station is not so big but it surrounding by shopping mall. The toilets at the station is not really clean, still use old style of toilet. Fukuyama is know as rose city. There are many rose tree outside of the station, It is so beautiful. The station is close to Fukuyama castle and museum.
Monyrath S — Google review
Roses bloom by the station; castle walls watch from across the street. Fukuyama feels proud and unassuming — the beauty of a town that has survived and blossomed again. Tourist Tip: Visit Fukuyama Castle (visible from platform) and rose gardens. Easy transfers to Tomonoura’s seaside village.
Stray L — Google review
Recently refurbished with several cafe and dining options. Got to be one of the stations that is closest to a castle in all of Japan (just outside the north entrance). The bus station in front is the place to head if going to Tomo-no-ura.
Paul W — Google review
Small but convenient station with a really long escalator.
Weinan L — Google review
A big nice station, two connecting lines. And the station is just in front of the castle!
François M — Google review
Attention foreigners! Fukuyama is not part of the Hiroshima area! At least this is what it said on the Hiroshima Yamaguchi area jr pass. You get charged additional 2000 yen for getting off this station in Hiroshima prefecture. The staff is also rude for treating foreign tourists like you and which nearly ruined my connection to my destination. Nice Japanese experience overall.
Andy S — Google review
Fukuyama station is very easy to navigate and has many dining options within its premise. Tourist information office located in the station is very helpful and Fukuyama castle and museums are all short walking distance.

Fukuyama Castle Sujigane-Gomon Gate is a significant cultural site, featuring the Fushimi Yagura and the Sujigane Gate, both designated as Important Cultural Properties. Nestled within the scenic Fukuyama Castle Park, the Fukuyama Art Museum showcases a blend of local and national art in its permanent and rotating exhibits. The museum features Japanese modern and contemporary art, as well as European modern and contemporary art. It also hosts various events, adding to its vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can also admire the 'Arch of Love' monument in the garden.
The place is not crowded. Its a good opportunity to get some fresh air from the city jam. Public clean toilets are available, and there's a cafe beside the area. It is 2min walk from Fukuyama Station. Surely a good spot for perfect chill and laid back sunday afternoon.

I went into the museum with a bit of a hunch as I had just gone to the museum next door, but on the way back after seeing the exhibition, I saw a small paperback book by Masuji Ibuse on the shelf next to the reception desk, and curiously decided to buy it. I want to. I bought ``John Manjiro Drifting Chronicles'', opened it casually, started reading it, and couldn't stop reading it. That's how talented a writer is!However, I had no choice but to stop reading it mid-way through the trip, but I finished reading it the same night I got home because I was worried about the fate of Manjiro and his friends. It felt like I was actually watching Manjiro and the five sailors! This modest literary museum has great power. It was called Fukuyama Castle and its art museum, and I realized the power of Fukuyama's culture. I felt that this was reflected in the design of the paving stones on the roads that connect these facilities. Nestled just a short stroll from the historic Fukuyama Castle, Bingo Gokoku Shrine is a serene spot that pays homage to the spirits of war heroes. Originally known as Abe Shrine, it transformed into Bingo Gokoku Shrine over time and now features impressive stone monuments dedicated to those who served. The shrine's elevated location offers stunning views of the castle’s distinctive black iron walls, especially from nearby hills.

This participation was made possible by the connection of serving at Susanoo Shrine the day after visiting in March. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. I went to the site to express my gratitude to the heroes who fought for Japan through "action". Although it was my first time participating, I was grateful to be in charge of cleaning the shrine grounds. Right next to the heroes, I carefully cleaned up each and every pebble covered in fallen leaves. Despite the words of the deputy chief priest, "You don't have to be so nervous..." (laughs), it was impressive that he was surprised later and said, "Wow!" After the service, the chief priest gave a lecture. It was a warm time with laughter. We also experienced "diving into the stone statue of Abe Masahiro." At that time, I received another reservation from a young man who was planning to travel abroad! The message was, "The effect was excellent, so I would like to request another treatment before I leave for Norway." It was as if I had received a blessing from God. Bingo Gokoku Shrine The shrine's former status was a Gokoku shrine designated by the Minister of Home Affairs (Fukuyama Gokoku Shrine in 1939). After the war, it was elevated to a special shrine status. Bingo Shrine and Abe Shrine merged to become Bingo Gokoku Shrine on March 11, 1957. Established in 1868 by Abe Masahiro, former lord of the Fukuyama domain, it originally enshrined 40 heroes who died in the Battle of Masuda in Iwami Province and the Battle of Hakodate during the Bo-Choshu War. Since then, the shrine has been dedicated to the heroic spirits from Bingo Province who died for the nation and the public, including those in Saga, Taiwan, the Satsuma Rebellion, the Sino-Japanese War, the Northern Qing Dynasty War, the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese-German War, Manchuria, Shanghai, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Greater East Asia War. Fukuyama Castle Fushimi Tower is a remarkable historical structure that has withstood the test of time, surviving the destruction of both Fukuyama and Fushimi castles. As part of Japan's esteemed "100 Great Castles," this tower stands as a testament to the architectural grandeur of yesteryears. Originally part of Fushimi Castle in Kyoto, it was relocated to Fukuyama by Katsunari Mizuno during its construction in 1622.
(Translated by Google) Fushimi Turret is a surviving relic that has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The three-tiered, three-story structure is comparable in scale to the castle tower of a small castle. It was originally the Matsunomaru East Turret of Fushimi Castle, built around 1600, and was moved here in 1620. Apart from the castle tower, it is one of the oldest surviving turrets. The interior cannot be visited, but it is a valuable surviving relic that survived the Meiji era's castle abolition order and the Fukuyama air raid, so it is well worth a visit. The real thing is even better than it looks in the photo. I've never seen a turret like this before. It's a rectangular two-story turret built with an oblong gable roof and a watchtower ridge. It's an old-fashioned triple-layered turret with a watchtower ridge on top. The elegance and style of the turret are irresistible. This is the turret "Fushimi Yagura" that was relocated from Fushimi Castle's Matsunomaru Higashi Yagura in 1622. During the dismantling and repair in 1952, the words "Matsunomaru Higashi Yagura" were engraved on the second floor beam. Discovered and relocated from Tokugawa Fushimi Castle, the only physical evidence in Japan to back it up. It is a miracle that this valuable turret survived the disaster of the Fukuyama air raid on August 8, 1945, and has continued to exist here for about 400 years, and the stone wall at the base is also strong despite its simple design. Castle
福山城 鏡櫓文書館, or the Mirror Turret Document Museum, is a two-story turret situated on the east side of the main enclosure of Fukuyama Castle. It serves as an archive that houses and exhibits ancient documents associated with the Fukuyama clan. Although it was destroyed in the early Meiji period, it was reconstructed in 1973 (Showa 48).
(Translated by Google) I went to Fukuyama Castle for the first time because it was near my hotel. I was able to get close enough to see it even at night. (Original) 宿泊ホテルの近くだったので初めて福山城に行きました。夜でも近くまで入れたのでゆっくり見ることが出来ました。

A small houndstooth gable decoration, and the main enclosure side has a simple and refreshing look 😄 The archives of the Fukuyama Castle Museum now store and display ancient documents and materials related to Fukuyama Castle📖 (Original) ☆本丸の東面中央に位置、東揚楯御門から三の丸の北御門方面を眺望、櫓下に広がる石垣や城域を一望、なので東揚楯御門に襲来した敵勢を背後から迎撃可能⚔️ 明治6年(1873)の廃城令で取り壊され、昭和48年(1973)に外観復元再建された南北6間×東西4間(間=1.818m)の長方形の二重櫓、東面外側に小振りな千鳥破風の装飾、本丸側は素朴な造りでスッキリ😄 今は福山城関連の古文書や資料を保管展示する福山城博物館の文書館📖
