The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter is a former 19th-century ceramic factory transformed into a vibrant hub of art galleries, music venues, and cafes. Visitors can start their afternoon at the Littke Sparkling Wine Houses visitor center before immersing themselves in the rich cultural offerings of the quarter. The area also houses permanent exhibitions showcasing the heritage of Vilmos Zsolnay, including displays on the history of the Zsolnay family and the renowned Pink exhibition.
Lovely spot to wander and soak up the cultural area. We were only able to visit on a Sunday, the galleries were open but all the shops were closed. I think one if the cafes was open but we didn’t visit. We went to the skateboard/street art exhibit. It was quiet, pretty much had the place to ourselves. The staff were helpful. Will visit again when the shops are open and we have more time to spend at the glassworks. Note- you pay for which exhibits you’re interested in seeing, there maybe a ticket for everything but we just stuck to the one as we were short on time.

Was a pleasant walk to the cultural center from the town centre. A really quaint and colourful area with small shops and artisans working on their crafts. Also a planetarium on site. A must see in Pécs.
Lawrence K — Google review
Breathtaking exhibition. The quarter alone is beautiful.
Juno — Google review
We only went to see the Gyugyi Collection, and it is absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth the visit and the exhibition itself deserves a 5-star rating. The problem is that the cultural complex has no info in English, or any other language, except Hungarian, and that includes info on prices, tickets, as well as directions. The complex is meant for tourists, and they seem to be going out of their way to make tourists feel unwelcome. No matter which exhibition you decide to go to, you should walk through the entire complex, as the buildings and the surroundings there are amazing. However, their service is the opposite :(
Nevena B — Google review
Very cool to visit even if you don't have time to go inside the buildings. Unique style that is a lovely update on Art Deco style. I hear it’s a great events space . Worth a visit or event for sure. Near the center of town.

Cathedral
Catholic church
Pécs Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a stunning Catholic church with origins dating back to the 10th century. Situated in the heart of Pecs, Hungary, this active cathedral boasts beautiful gardens and exquisite religious art. Its rich history and magnificent architectural design make it a top tourist attraction in the city. The cathedral's Romanesque Revival look from the 19th century adds to its allure.
The Pécs Cathedral (Pécsi Bazilika), officially known as the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, is a magnificent symbol of Pécs's rich religious and architectural heritage. Standing proudly at the heart of the city, this impressive Romanesque structure dates back to the 11th century, though it has undergone various renovations, blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Neo-Romanesque styles. Its four towering spires dominate the skyline, creating a striking visual landmark. Inside, the cathedral's ornate interior features stunning frescoes, intricate carvings, and a majestic pipe organ, offering a breathtaking atmosphere of reverence and artistry. The cathedral frequently hosts concerts, taking advantage of its excellent acoustics. As a sacred site and an architectural masterpiece, the Pécs Cathedral is a must-visit destination that captures the spirit and history of the city.

There was a service there when we visited, so it was closed for tourists. The entrance door is very interesting. There is something about leaves in Pecs, but we didn't quite understand what :)
Лъчезар А — Google review
This is a wonderful place to attend Mass, offering a peaceful and reverent atmosphere. The church itself is absolutely beautiful, with stunning architecture and intricate details that inspire a sense of awe and reflection. Whether you're a regular churchgoer or a visitor, it's a spiritually uplifting experience in a truly remarkable setting.
Nguyen A — Google review
We didn’t go inside Pécs Cathedral, but even just walking around the outside was pretty awesome. The architecture is stunning—massive, elegant, and full of history. You can feel how old and important the place is just from the vibe it gives off. What really made the visit cool was exploring the ruins nearby. They’re tucked around the cathedral and give you this real sense of ancient layers—like you’re walking through different parts of history. Super atmospheric. Great photo ops, too. Definitely worth stopping by, even if you're not doing the full tour. Makes you want to come back and explore more next time!
Laurence H — Google review
All I can say is WOW! I have visited hundreds of churches in all my travels around the globe and this one ranks in the top 10. Who would have ever thought that a small city like Pécs would have such a gem. So worth visiting and taking a walk up the tower. Absolutely loved this place. Incredibly highly recommended. Cannot be missed!!!

The Csontváry Museum, situated in the charming city of Pécs, Hungary, is a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts. It is a Neo-Renaissance-style museum that was established in 1973 and features both permanent and rotating exhibitions of Hungarian paintings. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the remarkable works of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, a renowned Hungarian painter.
Small art museum dedicated to Csontváry Definitely worth a visit if you would like to explore post-Impressionism / expressionism beyond the well-known names. He didn’t produce that many paintings but most of his work is hugely enjoyable (that seems as good a description as any).
Paul K — Google review
What are massive surprise for uncultured Geordie… having never heard of Csontváry I was very excited to discover this museum. I had my dog with me, which I thought would be a problem. However, Ava, the amazing lady on reception offered to keep him behind the reception. He is very well trained and exceptionally patient. I’m not sure this service would be offered for your average untrained noisy dog. However, I must say a massive thanks to Eva. The exhibition is brilliant. It covers examples from the full range of his career. The pencil sketches are experimental and represent immediate that he was not himself all together comfortable in. However, they are amazing. The classics as I’ve now discovered are on full display, including an awe, inspiring rendering of the Tatra mountains. This is definitely the highlight of my visit in Hungary. The entry ticket was about €15 And well worth it.
Richard T — Google review
Very small museum (5 rooms). Nearly the entire collection is here on Google reviews. Some very large paintings. At about $5 entry fee, it's expensive for a small collection (hopefully the Louvre won't charge $1 per gallery!)
Joe S — Google review
Definitely needs to visit this museum!
Shady B — Google review
All of his most famous pieces are prominently displayed, along with some great sketches I had not seen. Nice large spaces, but only accessible up some significant stairs, so not for the walking impaired.
Joe B — Google review
What a delight this exhibition offers. A pinch of alienation, a kind of budding surrealism is applied to the representations of humans mostly playing secondary roles on paintings. Expect large canvases with bold colours and intense contrasts spearheading future abstract forms as the XXth century advances towards avant-garde art movements. Your senses will be captured mostly by depictions of nature and its underlying stories. You need space to acquire sensations transmitted by the paintings and here you will have plenty of them. This is a unique collection from an amateur painter that has his own peculiar place in art history. In spite of this all what brought me down is how the Museum is administered. You have to turn the wheel of time 50 years back to get what I mean. All so socialist. What a pity.
Eszter A — Google review
Small but great collection
Virág K — Google review
Spent about an hour here. There is not a lot to see. Some very very large murals, colourful and interesting pictures by a single artist. He has a mostly colourful almost gaudily vivid style in many of his paintings with a naive distorted scale and perspective in many of them reminiscent of other more famous painters of the same era. Csontváry was a mostly self taught Artist who travelled outside Hungary extensively and was unappreciated and dismissed by Hungarians until 30 or so years after his death. An interesting scale replica of the Hungarian Crown is in the stairwell and interesting to see, especially if you have seen the original in the parliament. As a tourist it was affordable but I expect for locals it is quite pricey.

Museums
The Victor Vasarely Museum, located in Pecs, Hungary, is a classic building that has been open since 1976. It houses the world's largest collection of the renowned Hungarian-French artist's op-art creations, featuring over 400 pieces. The museum showcases symmetrical and largely abstract works with clever illuminations that intensify the 3D experience. While there have been debates about visual distortion, the well-curated selection offers an evocative and eye-bending experience.
A wonderful experience and absolutely worth visiting! The staff are incredibly kind and helpful, making the visit even more enjoyable. The exhibition itself is excellent, thoughtfully curated, and very engaging. The ticket price is 2500 HUF, with an additional photo fee of 300 HUF, which is definitely reasonable for such a memorable visit. Highly recommend it!
Irena P — Google review
Visited this museum (20.02.25) after being introduced to Victor Vasarely’s work in a County Art teacher’s training session… by luck, it just so happens I was visiting Budapest shortly afterwards, so got to see his wonderful artwork up close. What a wonderful gallery (museum). Fairly modest in size but packed with so many beautiful paintings, sketches and collages of Vasarely’s work, from his flat geometric work to his incredible op art. The colours, the precision and the patience are truly awe-inspiring. The staff were helpful and friendly as the ambiance was calm and serene. Other modern artists were also featured which complemented the style of Vasarely so well and you can see his clear influence. The curator asked where I came from (England) and commented on the fact they only seem to get French or English other than Hungarians… so I just want to spread the word further… to all nationalities, if you are in Budapest , love abstract geometric art and op art the Victor Vasarely Museum is the place to go.
Jill C — Google review
This is a place which is worth visiting, at least I still remember the first time 30 or more years ago. Even the kids love it. Well maintained, cosy small museum with these great pieces of art. Even the gate of the front yard is nice.
Gergely L — Google review
Fantastic collection on abstract and space/shape explorer Victor Vasarely, lover of optical illusions, colour explorations and textile craft. Museum is nicely planned with a sort of chronological order so to appreciate the evolution in his vision. It doesn't overwhelm you with countless rooms, and you can focus on just what's necessary on every wall. If you enjoy themes of colour, shape and abstract scenery and reflect on their nature, this is a place for you to explore. There's a small shop where you can buy postcards, magnets, small crafts and some more. Staff is friendly and helpful!
Francesco S — Google review
A good spot to loosen up and relieve tension. Vasarely’s artwork is pleasing in my eyes and super satisfying to see! Great collection and has a cozy vibe. The Museum also sells merchandise (like masks, shirts, etc.) with Vasarely’s pieces in it and it's beautiful. If you decide to go here, the Museum offers different prices (for students it is discounted) and they will offer you an extra fee if you want to take pictures of the artwork.
Alice P — Google review
I liked very much the work specially of Claire Vasarely
Irayetzin H — Google review
The museum, dedicated to the work of Victor Vasarely, the founder of Op-Art, costs about €6, with an additional small fee for taking photos, bringing my total to around €7.50. It presents an extensive collection of his works, known for their geometric shapes and optical effects. The museum itself is very exciting if you enjoy this type of art. I took many pictures and really liked it. Depending on how busy it is, you might have the rooms to yourself. It was quiet when I visited, but there was a small line at the ticket counter when I left. I was there around 4:30 PM and spent about 30 to 45 minutes in the museum. A fascinating visit for those interested in modern art and optical illusions.

Interesting, but not as good as the Csontváry museum.

Széchenyi Square is a bustling piazza in the heart of Pecs city center, adorned with charming cafes, statues, and surrounded by significant landmarks. The square was revitalized for Pecs' stint as European Capital of Culture in 2010 and serves as a focal point for various events throughout the year.
Széchenyi Square (Széchenyi tér) in Pécs is the vibrant heart of the city, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and modern life. Surrounded by stunning historical buildings and adorned with the iconic equestrian statue of János Hunyadi, the square exudes charm and elegance. The beautifully preserved Ottoman-era Gázi Kászim Pasha Mosque, now the Downtown Candlemas Church, adds a unique historical touch. Lined with cozy cafes, shops, and cultural landmarks, Széchenyi tér is a lively meeting point for locals and visitors alike. Its spacious design and picturesque setting make it an ideal place to relax, enjoy events, or simply soak in the beauty of Pécs.
Roja S — Google review
Széchenyi Square is hands down one of my favorite spots in Pécs. It’s got everything—history, chill vibes, and that gorgeous old mosque-turned-church right in the middle. The whole square is lined with cafés and cool buildings, and there's always something interesting going on. I happened to visit during Zsolnay Fényfesztivál, and it totally brought the place to life! Live music, food stalls, people dancing—it felt like the whole city came out to celebrate. The atmosphere was electric but still cozy enough to relax with a coffee and people-watch. At night, the lights and the buzz made it even more magical. If you're ever in Pécs, make sure to swing by the square—especially if there's a festival happening. It’s an experience you won’t forget!
Laurence H — Google review
This square is simply the most beautiful and essential part of Pécs. It's not just historical; it's where you truly feel the city's pulse. It's dominated by the incredible Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the impressive City Hall, which gives the square its grand, historical focal point. The square is lined with lovely cafés and restaurants, making it the perfect spot for relaxing and people-watching.

Observation Decks & Towers
The Pécs TV Tower, standing at 197 meters high atop the 535-meter Misina, has been in operation since 1973. Apart from its broadcasting responsibilities, it boasts an observation deck offering panoramic views of Pécs and its surroundings. On clear days, visitors can admire the Villanyi Mountains and even catch a glimpse of Croatian Papuk Hill or Badacsony. At night, the tower is illuminated with vibrant colors.
Very nice view, great for pictures and videos. You can see whole city from up there. It is 3.5€ per person(student price, 1€ more normally) to go up there 80 meters high. Restaurant available on the tower was full. Many parking spaces, cafe bar and ice cream available.

View was nice, 360 degrees and open. 1590ft per person. There's a lookout point below that's free that has a nice view too. There are some hikes in the area, so there are some other things to do too.

The Pécs TV Tower is a must-visit! The views from the observation deck are absolutely breathtaking—you can see all of Pécs and even distant mountains on a clear day. There's also a café where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Great spot for photos. Totally worth the trip up the hill!
Yang E — Google review
I expected more. You can't go up without an elevator operated by a girl who works at the entrance, and her workplace looks like a former toilet to me. The entrance fee is not expensive, but the view is nothing special either. We wanted to sit in the restaurant, but it was too hot and stuffy.
Ivana D — Google review
The Pécs TV Tower is a must-visit for its breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over the city, the Mecsek Hills, and the distant plains, offering a unique perspective in every direction. Perched high on Misina Peak, it’s the perfect spot to take in the scenery while enjoying a coffee, a glass of wine, or even a meal in the rotating-style restaurant, making the experience as relaxing as it is unforgettable. There is elevator for faster access.
Kaloian T — Google review
Great views of the surrounding area and cool on a hot day. Buy a ticket from the office downstairs then use the lift (there is a lift attendant) to go up. There is no information once you are up there, like which direction lake Balaton is in or what the various building are in the town. You have to use the lift both to get up and down.

Visit this place every year. Great place to see the whole Pecs city. There is a restaurant and above a terrace to see the magnificent view. The Zsolnay Porcelain Museum in Pecs showcases the world-famous handmade ceramics and stonework of the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture. The museum is located in the oldest building in Pecs and features six rooms that take visitors on a chronological journey through the manufacturing process. The exhibits include decorative motifs for buildings, figurines, tableware, and tiles. The museum also highlights the technological innovations and Art Nouveau murals of Zsolnay.
One of the most wonderful museums in Europe ( ceramic industry). I love that.
Stefan H — Google review
The museum is very beautiful and contains a long and detailed history of ceramic making and how it arrived in the city of Leptich. The artworks are amazing and showcase a wide range of techniques used in ceramic production, some of which are unique to Hungary. There are several halls spread across two floors, and a visit typically takes between one to two hours. Everything was good, but I believe the place could use more staff and better air conditioning during the summer months, as the heat inside is unbearable and it ruins the experience. Additionally, more effort could be put into the shop section. I wanted to buy a souvenir, but the items on display were few and extremely expensive.

Was asked to pay extra to BRING my camera. Not to take pictures, not to sell pictures later, just to BRING what I carried on my person. How is that not outright discrimination? It's my choice what I wear, and what accessories. I left in dismay and will not return until such a practice stops!

Pouring rain in Pécs today so decided to go here. A real treat to see such beautiful porcelain which is both functional and decorative. The night before we watched a Hungarian movie with English subtitles. “Lover of the soil”. A fanciful costume drama based on the Zsolnay family. Do not expect to see a workshop or anything like that. This is a collection of art from a small time frame in Hungarian history.

The hilltop facility features animal exhibits, a petting zoo, an aquarium, and a park showcasing local plants. Visitors can observe majestic creatures like lions, tigers, and leopards up close. The zoo is well-organized and clean with friendly English-speaking staff.
The price seemed a bit high, but worth every cent! Beautifully organized and clean, lots of animals. The zoo is integrated into the mountain.

Nice zoo, big selection of animals and close encounter with animals, located on the hillside, so as you go through the zoo you're going up the hill, might be demanding for people with baby strollers or people with disabilites. Parking is free, but it's unmarked on the side of the road, before and after the zoo entrance. Zoo map is paid extra 300ft.

Barbican is a well-preserved circular fortress gate that dates back centuries and offers stunning city views from the top. Similar to the Krakow Barbican, the Pecs Barbican was once part of a city wall system and is situated in the northwest corner of the medieval wall surrounding Pecs city center. It is Hungary's only remaining barbican and was constructed in the 15th century as a defense against Ottoman occupation.
The Barbican (Barbakán) in Pécs is a captivating historical landmark that stands as a proud reminder of the city’s medieval past. This well-preserved defensive tower, part of the original city fortifications, dates back to the 15th century and once played a crucial role in protecting Pécs from invaders. Its circular structure, thick stone walls, and strategic placement make it an impressive architectural feat. Surrounded by lush greenery and a charming park, the Barbican offers a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to explore its history and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Zsolnay Fountain is a significant monument in Pecs, dedicated to Vilmos Zsolnay, the renowned designer of Zsolnay ceramics. Donated by his son in 1908 and designed by Andor Pilch, this fountain is a must-see when visiting the city. It's located on Szechenyi Ter and stands in front of the Catholic church. The fountain is especially captivating during warmer months when it's operational, offering a refreshing oasis for visitors.

Pretty interesting historic landmark. It honours and represents the specific type of marble that the city of Pecs is known for. You can easily spot a lot of souvenirs and products that use it, and it is even included in the ornamenting of the buildings.
Лъчезар А — Google review
The Zsolnay Fountain on the main square in Pécs is a beautiful and extremely significant work of art. Built in 1912 as a memorial to Vilmos Zsolnay, the fountain stands out due to the use of two key inventions from the famous Zsolnay factory: Eosin Glaze: This glaze gives the ceramic a magical, iridescent metallic sheen that changes with the light. Pyrogranite: A material resistant to external weather conditions. Adorned with bull/ox head motifs, the fountain represents a masterful combination of the Art Nouveau style and ceramic innovation. It is an absolute must-see for all visitors—a cultural heritage and a masterpiece that captivates with its beauty.

**Amazing Adventure at Mecsek Extreme Park!** We recently had a fantastic day at Mecsek Extreme Park. The park offers a wide range of activities for both young and old. From challenging rope courses and exciting ziplines to fun climbing walls and a thrilling bobsled track, there is something for everyone. The staff is extremely friendly and professional, ensuring that everyone feels safe and welcome. The natural surroundings of the park are beautiful and add to the overall experience. We enjoyed a lovely picnic in the green surroundings, and the children had the time of their lives in the playgrounds. A visit to Mecsek Extreme Park is highly recommended for anyone looking for a day full of adventure and fun in nature. We will definitely be back!

Too good! It was the second time after a few years that we went there but it was still fun for the kids and the adults too. The tree climbing part is really challenging. The students working there in the summer were really helpful and professional. Only if the queues for the bob slide would be a bit shorter (20 min standing in the queue for each slide).

We love it there, visit at least once a year. The staff are young but very kind, respectful and helpful. We love the bob (forest coaster) and the tree climbing. Last time we didn't have a chance to try the rest of the park. We had lunch which was also great. Highly recommended!

I wish it was opened not just on weekends! Super cool place. Forest around is very beautiful. I'm going mainly to alpine routes, there're so many of them. There're some for children + 2 for teenagers or very beginning adults + 4 (maybe more) for adults. And about 5 zip line routes. All of them between trees where it's not hot even at +35. I absolutely love the variety and the location. It's the best park with alpine routes I've been to. P. S. Pretty comfortable to reach by bus.
Natalie G — Google review
This place is beautiful. inside the forest they have a forest coaster! It was really fun I even get on it again and again! The entrance was 3450ft in autumn. You can play a lot of arena, but in the fall to winter season some of the arena close due to the slippery conditions (like the donut slide and shooting). But the forest coaster is still open and is a must!

WOW, truly a unique place. It's run by the Forest management company so it's not a traditional entertainment business. It provides things to do for the whole family, one of the best forest zipline and climbing challenge park I have ever seen, a nice summer bob track, pedal go-kart, and dozens of fun and educational programs from kids. Ages 3(?) and up. It also has forest trails with signs in Hungarian and English about the ecosystem and forest management.
Marton T — Google review
It is a very nice park having lots of attractions. There was plenty of places to go and have fun for all ages. The most notable is the tree climbing. There are many different courses to go for children and adults with different difficulties. The Bob is also very fun with a very high speed and short queues at some points. The restaurant was also clean and nice but portions were very plain with not even any salad. Apart from that the food still tasted good. The last attraction I went on the donut was a huge let down. There was one family taking all the donuts for a long period of time and there were no free ones. Also there are plenty of parking spaces.
Gyula S — Google review
Well worth the money spent on family tickets. It's a whole day entertainment with offers for all ages. ( climbing frames, slides, donut-slides, wall climbing, bob, tree-trails, football, ping-pong, ruding bull etc) You get unlimited rides on the bob and the queue is not too long on weekdays even during the summer break. The tree-trails are challenging but offer variety for all abilities. The guys explained the use thoroughly and were ready to assist or save thouse who got stuck or too tired.

Nap Hostel is located in a charming 1800s building and offers casual rooms and dorms with free Wi-Fi, a communal kitchen, and a terrace. Although it's not part of the HI network yet, the hostel has good contacts with the network. The young owners have established connections within the community. The building may seem huge and unusual at first glance, but it adds to the charm of Hungarian culture due to its long and interesting history.
Very good hostel with perfect location. Three of us came with bikes and they have safe backyard which was very usefull for us. The rooms are spacious and the girl that welcomed us (unfortunately we forgot her name) is very helpful, witty and kind! The bar is just below the hostel so you don't have to go far to grab a drink. Only downside is the lack of AC or a fan so it can be pretty hot inside, but that's reasonable since there are many different people in the room so it would be hard to please everyone, so they probably made wise choice to leave it out.

Last time they cancelled my booking really in the lastminute, one day before my arrival - because of a big group - causing me much inconvinience about rebooking and replanning my trip. Haven't been there since then. Apart form this I was kinda a regular visitor there and everything was fine before.
Ferenc B — Google review
To start with the positive: The staff was very friendly, maybe among the friendliest hostel staff I have experienced so far. Therefore my first impression was amazing. However, my opinion on this place quickly changed. Firstly, I was irritated by the fact that the toilets/bathroom can not be locked. I could still live with that alone, but additionally, I wasn't able to properly close the bathroom door. After entering the bathroom and closing the door, it opened itself again. I really hope this door has been fixed since my visit. Then the rooms: They are cute as such, and there's not too many beds. However, my blanket seemed rather dirty. And then came the worst part: I could not sleep for even a second. Some drunk guy made the loudest sleeping noises I have ever heard. He was literally screaming, burping and farting during his sleep, making it impossible for me to even think of falling asleep. He also looked kind of creepy so somewhere before 6am, when the sun was out, I decided to just leave the hostel as quickly as possible. I did not feel comfortable at all. What a shame, because Pécs is an amazing city. Maybe my rating would have turned out better without that drunk guy...

Got here with my partner when I was facing a difficult time. The staff was extremely kind and understanding, going as far as to help me however they could. The place itself was great too, featuring a dorm, a kitchen, a lounge and a closed courtyard outside. The dorms we stayed in featured five bunk beds, each having their own nightlight. There are plenty of electrical sockets for charging devices. The kitchen had everything it needed to cook well, including an oven. The lounge was next to the reception and had very comfy chairs and a sofa, along with some books and good wifi. The courtyard outside was not public, so you had reasonable privacy (except other hostel users and residents). As per location, there is a bar (Nappali) directly underneath that can be accessed via a backdoor in the building itself, so you don't have to walk around. It is in the heart of historic Pécs with many landmarks nearby. Groceries can be gotten from nearby stores in the same street, which tend to be open from early morning till almost midnight. All in all, it was a great stay and I would certainly recommend others to go there as well!

As foreigner like me, you could be at first sight surprised by the huge but weird building, but this is what make the charm of the Hungarian culture: a long and interesting history. You have a "VIP door" which give you access to the bar in the same building. I had the occasion to go to a concert to this bar, which is the coolest bar of the city. The host speaks english and will give you the best local spots to go, and the tourist traps to avoid.

A very pleasant hostel in a large converted flat, very homely and welcoming. The dorms are big and airy, overall a nice stay, in the centre of Pécs. The restaurant and bar downstairs are also worth your time.

A really pleasant place to relax in whilst exploring Pecs. The facilities are good though not modern, there’s a courtyard where you can park your motorbike/ bike. The hostel is on the first floor, if you have any problems gaining access, ask at the bar on the ground floor.

University
Nestled in the heart of Hungary, the University of Pécs stands as a beacon of education and culture. This historic city thrived even during its 143-year Turkish occupation, largely due to the influence of Suleiman II, who called it home. The remnants of this era can still be seen today, with stunning landmarks like the Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kassim adding to its charm.

Exams are unfair and based on luck Oral exams are, based on topic. Before the exam starts, you’ll draw a certain number of topics from the topic list, often 2 or 3, but sometimes more. Then, you’ll be given an amount of time to prepare (in theory at least 30 minutes, but some subjects don’t allow preparation time at all), after which you must present your topics. Because the two or three topics you’ve drawn is a small part of the curriculum, the examiner must necessarily expect and ask details regarding your topics, otherwise the exam would only last a few minutes. However, this is problematic for two reasons. First, the level of detail they ask is often unnecessary to know as a non-specialist in the field. Second, students are only tested in a small part of the curriculum, making luck play a huge role. You may be lucky and get topics you specifically know extra well, or topics which are easier compared to others, or you may be unlucky and get a topic you didn’t understand well enough, or one of the most difficult topics in the topic list. Luck plays a huge role in another factor as well; the examiner you get. Which examiner you get on your exam is random and not known until the day of the exam. There is large variability in the way different examiners treats students, the level of detail the examiner expects from the student, and how many mistakes the examiner can let slide before failing you. In some cases, an examiner which is nice one day can be the opposite the next day. Examiners allow their mood to affect the student’s exam to an unfortunately large degree. Also, some examiners are known to be nicer to certain nationalities and genders. Written exams are better in the way that all students having the exam on the same day will get the same questions, but they’re still unfair to some extent because the previous or next time that exam is arranged the questions will be different, and may be much easier or much harder. Oral exams are not standardised The level of knowledge necessary to pass or achieve a certain grade for oral exams is not standardised and therefore differs between examiners. One examiner may find a certain question to be so important that a student must necessarily fail if they fail to answer satisfactorily, while another would not care if the student failed to answer the same question.

They do not bother at all for student wellbeing. One time, they didn’t let my friend register for her exam that was in three days even though it was way before their deadline, she even tried to explain to them but they didn’t care. Due to their outstanding negligence and the important of the course she missed, she couldn’t pass the first year and they advised her to redo the year. I don’t know if it’s cause she black or something cause it’s a very white dominated school.

I spent 3 years studying international relations at the university of Pécs, made countless memories, learned so much and always remember those days fondly. Almost all Teachers are kind and passionate and education in english improved year after year. I can't speak for all departments and faculties, but i highly recommend studying international relations at pécs. Also, the registrar's office is incredibly efficient and quick which is extremely rare nowadays

The university of pécs has many faculties. The one I was in was the small faculty of science education. The location is accessible and easy to access and the building has wifi and hitter during the winter. However, the integration is really hard with the local students. They have a different time from ours and the asministration prefers speak hungarian. The monthly newsletter shared in the building is only in hungarian there is no english version.

Food was alright, but nothing special and pretty overpriced. We ordered bbq wings, pork ribs, and pork tenderloin. Portion sizes were also quite small. The view is stunning, and the wine is pretty good, but that's about it. It's not worth the effort to hike all the way up there, to be honest.

The Bishop's Palace, also known as the Bishop's Castle, is a historic site located on the west side of Pecs Cathedral. Originally established as a Romanesque church in the 12th century, it has been home to several bishops over the years. The palace was extensively expanded and renovated by various bishops, with the most recent restoration ordered by Bishop Janos Scitovszky in the 19th century.
A relatively short, but nevertheless very interesting guided tour is offered twice a day. You need to register and pay for one of the two tours in the church building, there is a cashier as you enter the main gate, to the left. The building is very nicely refurbished and the tour guide is very professional. The walled garden has a very unique and peaceful atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) "The Pécs bishop's palace, or bishop's palace, is a monumental building located on the west side of the Pécs cathedral, which was mostly built in the 12th century, but which was continuously expanded according to the taste of the reigning bishops. Most recently, in the 19th century, by order of Bishop János Scitovszky. The earliest record of the bishop's palace dates back to 1015. This first part of the palace was destroyed by fire in 1064. During the Renaissance, the palace was significantly remodeled. At that time, it was enriched with another palace wing, which was built to the inner wall of the castle wall to the west of the tower. The first large-scale reconstruction took place in the 18th century, and in the second half of the century, Bishop György Klimó fundamentally modernized the entire building. The small windows were replaced by large stone windows. The library wing was built and economic premises were created. In the halls of the palace, you can see the bishop's study rooms and salons, which vary in style. The way of life of the bishops is presented to us with the help of uniquely decorated Baroque, Biedermeier, Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque furniture, paintings and furnishings. In addition to all this, we can admire the beauties of the carefully designed Mediterranean garden. Although the history of the tunnel under the Bishop's Palace, which connects the garden with the Cellar and the Granary, dates back to the Middle Ages, it fulfilled its most special task during the communist autocracy. The cellar was then not only used to store wine. It was also used for secure, underground negotiations in the days when countless listening devices were installed in the bishop's residence and garden, as the thick wall of the basement was an impenetrable barrier to the technical standards of the time. Today, the tunnel with a long history provides an exceptional environment for the presentation of the perilous everyday life of the communist church persecution, through the presentation of resisting priests and conceptual trials. The wine cellar, built in the 18th century, belonged to the bishop's residence at the time and was known as the "main cellar" of the manor. In the two-story, huge space extending deep underground, the visitor can see the original barrels of the cellar and taste its wines, thereby getting to know the great Pécs Diocese its past wine culture." (Original) "A pécsi püspöki palota, vagy püspökvárnak is nevezett épületkomplexum a pécsi székesegyház nyugati oldalánál található műemléki épület, melyet zömmel a 12. század folyamán építettek, de melyet a regnáló püspökök ízlése szerint folyamatosan bővítették. Legutóbb a 19. században, Scitovszky János püspök megbízásából. A legkorábbi emlék a püspöki palotáról 1015-ben keletkezett. Ez az első palotarész az 1064-es tűzvészkor a tűz martaléka lett. A reneszánsz korban a palotát jelentősen átalakították. Ekkor egy újabb palotaszárnnyal gazdagodott, amit a várfal belső falához építettek a toronytól nyugatra. Az első nagyarányú átépítésre a 18. században került sor, a század második felében Klimó György püspök az egész épületet alapvetően korszerűsítette. A kis méretű ablakokat nagy, kőablakokra cserélték le. Felépítették a könyvtárszárnyat, és gazdasági helyiségeket alakítottak ki. A palota termeiben megtekinthetjük a stílusukban változó püspöki dolgozószobákat és szalonokat. Az egyedi díszítésű barokk, biedermeier, neoreneszánsz és neobarokk bútorok, festmények, berendezési tárgyak segítségével elénk tárul a püspökök életvitele. Mindezek mellett megcsodálhatjuk a nagy gonddal kialakított mediterrán kert szépségeit. A mélyen a föld alá nyúló, kétszintes, hatalmas térben a látogató megtekintheti a pince eredeti hordóit, és megkóstolhatja borait, megismerhetlek ezáltal a Pécsi Egyházmegye nagy múltú borkultúráját."

It's creepy to say, that a burial object is beautiful, but it's a fact, indeed. Based on my convincement, that the porcelain made in the Zsolnay Manufactory is one of the best and the most beautiful in the world, it already assumes high standards. This burial chamber of the Zsolnay family is a testimony of a new techniques called "eosin". It's made from different metals and depending on which metal is dominating this "mixture", it begins to play in its respective colour (green, yellow, silver, red, purple, etc.) when lighted. The sarcophagus of Miklós and Terézia Zsolnay (husband and wife, who established the manufactory) is covered with "eosin". Their sarcophagus is situated in the middle of the basement, while the floor over it has a big circle opening. On the 21st of December each year - when the winter starts - at 11:00 the sunshine is lightning through one of the windows directly on the altar, which reflects different colours of the "eosin" into the basement - it's a unique "light game", which makes this burial chamber even more mysterious. Of course, for this phenomena a clear sky is absolutely necessary (without clouds). After nine years in a row, it was the very first time, we could observe this magnificent "light game" and to realize "the secrets of the "eosin"".

The Angster Memorial, established during the 19th century, holds significant historical value. This memorial is known for its unique features such as the ability to produce sound when pressing the buttons on its bench. It stands among four major factories of that time - Littke (champagne), Hamerli (gloves), and Zsolnay (porcelain). The memorial's distinctiveness lies in its capacity to generate sound from bench buttons when interacted with.

Great location, 2 min from the main square of the city. Very good parking for this location, nice and clean rooms though for me a bit old fashioned and with high ceilings, which I personally don’t like. Floor heating in bathroom is very convenient, great WiFi, very cozy restaurant with good food choice. Hot chocolate available for bfast, though taste could be bit better. 1st floor rooms with windows looking to the street don’t have the best privacy feeling.

We stayed in the suite . The hotel is 5 mins walk from the centre in a quiet lane. We couldn’t find the entrance as google maps took us to the apartments , which is opposite. It took us some time to figure out the actual hotel reception. The room being a suite was spacious. The air condition worked well. The bed was very uncomfortable and was saggy and pits in the sides The pillows were small and very out of shape. The bathroom had no amenities. Not even a small bottle of water was provided. The hot water took forever to the point I just showered in cold water. The breakfast was some stale cold food with coffee from a self serve machine. I don’t understand the high reviews for this place other than the location.

They told us to leave in the middle of the night, because 1 lady was complaining about people in the hotel being loud. Since we were young they (lady and receptionist) assumed we were the ones causing it. We tried to explain that it’s not the case, but they wouldn’t listen and called the cops on us instead. We had no choice but to leave, kinda racist.

It’s an unmissable destination for history enthusiasts and anyone intrigued by the ancient heritage of Pécs.

came in because its a UNESCO site. the reconstruction and the software-rendered models were more informative to a layperson than the actual remnants. i wish the curator explained based off the real buildings a bit more. sometimes its hard to piece together which part of the model is the thing i’m seeing in front of me.. however i did find the wine grass, jewelry and buckles that were found in these burial tombs interesting, something a bit more relatable.

In such an important archaeological site which is a UNESCO world heritage, the visitor center was designed to show the site with the least intervention needed. The site consists of multiple burial chambers that date back to early christian times (4th century). The visitor center is equipped with a glass roof to show it from outside, 3D visualizations to explain the original shape of the structures, and hanging metal pathways that are not touching the original ground. I think Cella Septichora is a successful example of protecting and presenting a valuable ancient site.

The Roman Christian catacombs beneath Pécs were a truly eye opening and enrapturing experience. The necropolis has seen has extraordinary preservation such that ancient paintings are still visible in colour, and the infrastructure of the various tombs and crypts is discernibly intact. A truly engrossing and tangible dive into the history of Pécs and the museum built around the ruins offers a very intimate viewing experience for it.

Cella Septichora is basically a pretty big (actually the biggest) burial chamber of one reach citizen of the Roman Imperium. It's discovered in the 19th and 20th century, but made visible around the time, it received the status "World Heritage" in 2000. I'm not sure, if the idea to make it to a "Visitor Center" was very well. Because, it's "just" an entrance to some of the chambers from the 04th century and not a "tourist information", what the name would let us suppose. I'm pretty sure, that the idea, to connect all the - up to the establishing this centre - discovered burial chambers from the period above is just fantastic! Imagine: all the chambers are under the today's earth level - but, on the level of the 04th century - connected with each other. You have so the feeling, to walk in an medieval cemetery. My "small problem" is even that: I'm unable to live through, as the 04th century would be right now... And I seriously don't know why is that so... There are many very good videos (simulations) shown on screens on spots all over the "under the earth complex", which help you visualize the period of building this chambers.

We paid an afternoon visit to this small yet unique Ottoman-era mausoleum. We waited 15/20 mins until the tour guide arrived but it was totally worthfit as this type of monument is one of the few of its kind left in Hungary. I am extremely disappointed with Arkad Mall in Pécs. It’s shocking that a shopping center of this size and reputation doesn’t offer even a single charging station or power outlet for customers to use. In today’s world, where people rely heavily on their phones, this is a basic facility that every modern mall should provide. It’s frustrating and inconvenient to spend time here and not have access to something so simple and essential. This lack of thoughtfulness towards customers’ needs is unacceptable and reflects poorly on the management. I sincerely hope they address this issue soon, as it’s a major flaw for such a large shopping center.

Shameful, today I went to the toilet with my 4 year old son, which costs 200 forints per person. My son can't go to the toilet by himself, so I went with him, I explained this to the cleaners at the entrance. They called security and at the exit from the toilet I was met by 2 security guards and made me pay for the toilet too. I tried to explain to them that I was just a parent looking after my child and that I didn't use the toilet, because my son is not able to go to the toilet by himself, they were not understanding and shamefully made me pay for another entrance to the toilet

Beware motorcyclists! We are NOT welcome in Arkad! We were asked to leave the gated Arkad parking lot after YEARS of visiting and paying for the parking spot and not even using a single parking spot (there's plenty of places where you can park your motorcycle next to a wall completely safely and without it being in the way of anyone or anything). No reason was given other then... "it's the rules". Completely idiotic decision by Arkad menagement.

A chamber event in the upstairs Művészbejáró. All very friendly and informal, though rather a safari if your legs are not the best. We didn't use the makeshift bar but it was good to see it in action- unlike (for instance) the Művészetek háza in the middle of town. Apart from the commercial aspect, performers and audiences alike often prefer to have an interval, but if there is no buffet there is little point. Having a break long enough to visit the loo and the bar shouldn't be a luxury.

Nestled on Kaptalan utca, affectionately known as the street of museums by locals, the Modern Hungarian Gallery is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. This vibrant space showcases an impressive array of Hungarian art from 1850 to the present day, spanning multiple floors and featuring styles from impressionism to contemporary works.
A great overview of Hungarian painting from the late 1800s onwards. The three floors of galleries are well hung and well lit; there are excellent written explanations of each room in English as well as Hungarian.

Interesting collection, but please, please let us breath! As soon as I paid for the ticket at the entrance, a lady was assigned the task to follow me through the whole museum. She thoroughly watched every single one of my moves from the first to the last moment, an oppressive behavior that clearly made the experience difficult to enjoy. It even reached comical proportion at times such as when the lady stood so close to me that I couldn't even read the paintings' caption. In decades of museum visits across the world, I've had my faire share of zealous museum keepers (especially in former Socialist Republics), but the Pécs Modern Gallery clearly emerges as the most oppressive museum experience in my life. As noted by someone else : the policy appears to target foreigners. Indeed, the Hungarians visiting the museum at the same time me were left to wander entirely unsupervised. She followed me, only me. I hated the experience. Which, really, is a shame, since the collection is genuinely interesting! I was particularly impressed by the collection of local tüzzománc from the 70's. If you're a foreigner planning to visit the museum, please go but expect to be treated like a professional thief.

The Gazi Kasim Pasha Mosque is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the city of Pécs, Hungary. It was originally built in the 16th century during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, between 1543 and 1546, under the command of Gazi Kasim Pasha, who was the Ottoman governor of Pécs at the time. The mosque was constructed on the site of a former Gothic church, which was demolished to make way for the new Islamic place of worship. The building's architecture reflects a blend of Islamic and local styles, featuring a large dome and pointed arches, typical of Ottoman mosque design. The mosque was one of the largest in Hungary and served as the main mosque in Pécs during the Ottoman era. After the end of Ottoman rule in the late 17th century, the mosque was converted into a Christian church, known as the Inner City Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While the building retains much of its original Ottoman structure, modifications were made to adapt it for Christian worship, including the addition of a Baroque-style altar and the removal of Islamic inscriptions. Despite these changes, the Gazi Kasim Pasha Mosque remains a remarkable example of Ottoman architecture in Hungary and serves as a symbol of the diverse cultural and religious history of Pécs. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, allowing visitors to explore the unique architectural blend and learn about the city's Ottoman past. The mosque is also part of Pécs' UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its historical and cultural significance.

A true historical and architectural gem! A must-see when in Pécs. The transformation from a mosque to a Catholic church is absolutely fascinating. You can clearly see the Turkish/Ottoman elements, like the dome and the preserved mihrab, blended with Christian altars and frescoes. It’s a powerful symbol of the city's layered history. Peaceful atmosphere and beautiful light inside. Highly recommend for history buffs!

History teacher here, for those of you who don't know, I'll give you a quick, quick lesson. This region of Hungary was Christian since, well, a long, long time, then in the mid 1500s it was conquered by the Ottomans (who were Muslim) then in the early 1700s it was re-conquered by Christians. Pasha Qasim the Victorious of the Ottomans built this mosque between 1543-1546. Then, when the Ottomans were conquered by the Hapsburgs who were Christian they converted the mosque into a Christian church. Sadly, the Jesuits destroyed the minaret in 1766. This mosque is one of the largest Ottoman constructions left in Hungary. I appreciate how the left at least some of the old Arabic writing and Islamic artistic style on the walls. And be sure to see the incredibly hokey tribute to the crusades mural on the second floor. I stood there mesmerized by it. I know my grandma would have loved it all the way down to the weeping Muslim and the triumphant crusader. It's so funny to me how history is remembered to people. The massacre of millions is celebrated by a pretty painting with a cute little rainbow in a house of worship? That's just the kind of stuff I will never understand about religion. It was an amazing visit though. Highly recommended. Must see in Pecs.

(Translated by Google) The three stars are not for the painter, but for the work, the painter deserved much better than this. The creator was not very well prepared from the biography of the brilliant painter. If we observe, the brush is in the left hand of the statue figure. It is true that a well-known and accessible self-portrait of Csontváry was published. He is indeed holding the brush in his left hand, but this has a very prosaic explanation. He painted that from the mirror. Zsolnay Statue is a fascinating attraction located in Pecs, Hungary. The statue is made of durable porcelain, a material invented by the Zsolnay family. Visitors can explore the Zsolnay Family and Factory History Exhibition to learn about the industrial dynasty's journey from producing simple ceramic items to creating ornate decorative pieces. Additionally, at the factory's exit in Pecs, there is a museum and a functioning factory site that can be visited.

Rob S — Google review
Zsolnay Family and Factory History Exhibition The Zsolnay family and factory history exhibition gives an insight to the visitor of the most precious moments of the life of the industrial dynasty starting with the simplest industrial ceramic items to the most decorated ornamental pieces and the life-ch In the beginnings... The history of the factory is attached to the main stages of the history of Hungary. Its founding dates back to the Bach period, it lived its heyday during the period of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy; that was the time of dualism. World War I and the peacemaking processes that followed broke the fast development. The era between the 2 world wars was the time of a new beginning and of modernisation. Nationalisation brought the next turning point first by breaking with and later by returning to the older traditions with artistic and technical experiments. The young industrial artists established a new and modern form language with the products of the factory while they also sensed a strong request for the keeping of the traditional techniques and forms. Zsolnay: family and factory The history of the factory is the exciting and colourful story of the Zsolnay family too. The figure of Vilmos Zsolnay; the genious potter lives vividly in public consciousness. The exhibition commemorates those without the work of whom this rich heritage could not have come to life. The son of Vilmos; Miklós Zsolnay was a merchant and a businessman; he made sure that the family assets stay in the hands of the family members and that the factory kept its leading position on the market. The designer works of Júlia Zsolnay are well known but she is less known for her paintings. Her older sister Teréz had an essential role in the collection and keeping of the heritage. Júlia’s husband; Tádé Sikorski wrote his name in the great book of the factory not solely as a designer, but as an architect also. Teréz’s husband; Jakab Mattyasovszky supported his father-in-law’s inventions as a geologist. Those family members whose activities were less known also had essential roles in the development of the business. The exhibition follows through the efforts of the grandchildren they had in order to keep the factory running. Without their technological inventions we could probably hardly talk about an operative factory today. From the ornamental pieces to the porcelain insulations The factory used to be the largest ceramics manufacture of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy until the turn of the last century where household and ornamental pieces, building ceramics, fireplace tiles, porcelain insulations and stoneware pipes were produced. There was another factory in operation in Öv Street in Budapest starting from 1902. It was named the Budapest Porcelain and Faience Co. that primarily produced paving tiles and insulations and that kept its independence in the hands of the family until its nationalisation in 1948. Innovators and inventions The inventions of Vilmos Zsolnay had a great role in the success of the factory. From among these the porcelain faience and the eosin technique brought world fame to the Zsolnays whereas the pyrogranite inspired a whole architectural trend that is the Hungarian seccession or art nouveau on the turn of the last century. We shall not forget the hundreds of workers either from among whom many added to the artistic and business successes of the factory through generations or who kept the great professional quality even following the nationalisation that has always been the key to the success. One of these people was István Kovács who did not only keep the technique of eosin and revived it at the end of the 1950s. This was the artistic tradition that inspired the modern form language and the new workers and industrial artists: Antal Gazder, János Török, György Fürtös and Judit Nádor from the 1960s who are known as the classical figures of Hungarian design today.

Alex B — Google review
It's a beautiful statue, situated on a perfect spot in the City Centre of Pécs, makes memory for a really great man, scientist and businessman from the end of the 19th century in the life of Pécs - it was Miklós Zsolnay, who established the worldwide known Zsolnay Porcelain Manufactory. This statue was built in 1907, after the citizens, businessmen and companies put together the money necessary for it. Before 2007 it was renewed and a traffic circle was made around it (it got place in the middle of the renewed square) and it became an elegant lightning as well. Sadly, the lamps died during the time, but no one was able to change them... If you're driving with a car and are close to this traffic circle, you should avoid this spot around the rush hours, since there are too many passing ways for pedestrians through the entire square, so that cars and busses simply can't pass the traffic circle - it builds traffic jams, instead of enabling a fluent traffic in the area...

If you're planning a trip to Pecs, make sure to stop by "Lakatfal," also known as the "Wall of Padlocks." This enchanting spot is adorned with hundreds of colorful padlocks, each representing a love story. It's an ideal location for couples looking to celebrate their romance; you can even bring your own lock and add it to the collection! The atmosphere here is charming and inviting, making it a perfect backdrop for memorable photos.
Pécs is a must to visit beautiful place if you haven't seen it yet and "Lakatfal" ("Wall of padlocks") is a "lovely" place within, where hundreds of padlocks may make you romantic for a little.

❗️ Someone stole our locker ❗️ I’ve been traveling a lot and met a lot of people on the way, but I am still amazed by people’s behavior… Exactly two weeks ago, on the 3rd of October (our anniversary) me and my boyfriend “locked” our love at the locker wall in Pécs. We bought the locker that is visible in the above picture and carved our initials on it, thinking that nobody and nothing will ever unlock it. Well, that only happens in fairytales apparently, because only two weeks after we walked by the locker wall and decided to check if it is still there and surprisingly it disappeared (you can see in the picture without the locker in, we know exactly where we locked it). I cannot believe such people exist on this earth. That locker was not just an object, it had a significance for us. Why would someone take something that does not belong to them?! Why would someone steal a locker that has someone’s love and initials carved on it?! Please, share my post, because people should understand that they should never mess with things that have such big sentimental meaning. If you, the one who took the locker, see this post, please go and put it back where it belongs!

An interesting experience, never saw that many locks at one spot. I can imagen that it could be a romantic place to go with a boy-/girlfriend.

This was Hungary's first independent, open-air statue of Liszt. The statue shows the world-famous composer leaning out of a balcony. Ferenc Liszt paid a four-day visit to the city of Pécs in October 1846, during which he gave several official and unofficial concerts and made various offerings, with which he deservedly increased his popularity among the townspeople. According to legend, the townspeople thanked Liszt for his visit with a serenade, which the famous composer listened to from the balcony. This serenade is silenced by the detailed reports, but it would be a good story anyway. The sculptor Imre Varga also created the nearby Kodály statue, which was inaugurated seven years earlier, not far from here.

The sculpture of Ignác Szepesy, located on the plateau adjacent to the cathedral, is a magnificent artwork situated in a picturesque location. Erected in the late 19th century as a tribute to this revered bishop and scholar, who played an instrumental role in advancing the city's scientific and cultural progress. This awe-inspiring monument not only symbolizes Szepesy's significant contributions but also serves as a testament to his enduring legacy.

(Translated by Google) A very beautiful statue stands in front of the cathedral in Pécs. The statue erected in front of the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul dominates the landscape, and many flowers are constantly blooming around it. Baron Ignác Szepesy Négyesi (name variant Szepessy Ignác; Eger, August 13, 1780 – Pécs, June 16, 1838) was a doctor of humanities and theology, a Catholic bishop of Pécs and Transylvania, and an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1828 he was appointed bishop of Pécs. At that time, his first task was to travel around his diocese; along the way he taught the people in Hungarian, German and Croatian. After that, he set up an independent teacher training institute and, after his unsuccessful attempt to move the college from Győr to Pécs, he founded a new lyceum.

(Translated by Google) Ignác Szepesy was one of the most important reform-era bishops of the Pécs Diocese. His activity as a school founder (Law Academy), as well as because he donated the square in front of Püspökvár to the city "for the purpose of establishing a public park" (see the Promenade to this day!), the city itself commissioned him to erect this statue.
