Kirkgate Park is a beautiful and spacious park located along the shores of Loch Leven. It offers stunning views, a large play area for children, and is dog-friendly. The park features various play equipment suitable for all age ranges, including a climbing frame, flying fox, and swing pendulum. Additionally, visitors can enjoy activities such as walking and cycling on the well-maintained paths that offer clear views of Loch Leven Castle.
Peaceful, tranquil and an all round lovely place. The children's play area was good with a good variety of equipment. The whole place was litter free even the toilets were good. Lots of dog walker who all seemed very responsible.

Lovely place never got round all of it but we found a wee spot next to the loch to paddle in. Car parking was easy to navigate.

Open places, with kids park, no facility for toilets the only available toilet have been probably never cleaned after construction. The toilet seat had moss and and dirt stuck . Good day out for kids only if you don't need toilet

Didn't know about this place until the man at the boathouse told me as I was looking for a place to take some wedding photos. Lovely view, plenty of space.
Karen S — Google review
Great park right next to the Loch, good amount of free parking, nice grassy open areas with picnic benches. There are public toilets that take 20p cash. Good amount of things to do at the park for all ages.
Martina M — Google review
Free parking .massive walk if you are up for it .beautiful views .toilets there . brilliant overall

This is a wonderful park. It connects to the trail the runs all the way the Loch. There is a large play area for children and is dog friendly. There is a good walking and cycling path. You have a rather clear view of Loch Leven Castle. There are facilities here and parking. There is an interesting older cemetery at the top end of the park which is not dog friendly.
Amy S — Google review
Brilliant place to enjoy with family or by yourself. Loads of grass area nice wee walk....if you want. Go jump in the water or play water sports. A little sand area, too. What a fantastic day we had.

Brewery
Food & Drink
Loch Leven Brewery is a micro-brewery located at the entrance to Kinross Golf Courses. The brewery offers premium beers inspired by local Scottish heroes, such as Mary Queen of Scots and Andrew Carnegie. The taproom provides a relaxed and dog-friendly atmosphere where visitors can enjoy quality beer and friendly staff. Customers appreciate the traditional brew style and the helpful advice from the bar staff.
Staying across the road at the Green and popped over to sample the beer. Had a couple of pints of Kingslayer. Absolutely fabulous. Just the job. Really fresh and slides down very easily. Here for the weekend and know exactly where I will be heading tomorrow evening. Small tap room adjoining the brewery and whilst there an eclectic mix of people were in making a really good atmosphere. Plenty of opportunities to buy the different types of beer sold. An interesting bottle is the growler which is a very large bottle and you fill it with the beer of choice, fix the cap, take home and drink the contents, wash the empty bottle out and then take back for a refill.

Lovely quaint wee place. Relaxing and friendly staff and punters. It was the 1st time my husband and i had been in as not from the area. We were very surprised. Live music that particular evening so came along. Artist was brill, will go back again.x

Nice tap room located near the centre of Kinross. They have their own locally made beers on offer, with an option of a beer flight to try them all. They also have some Cold Town Beers, plus wines and local gins. Staff are friendly and venue is clean and comfortable.
Dave M — Google review
A great wee pub, so friendly, and the beer is excellent! Magic!
Anna K — Google review
Plenty of on street parking, a great partly sheltered outdoor space. More importantly they serve a cracking pint of Loch Leven IPA, and serve it in a most hospitable way. Highly recommended.
J C — Google review
If you're looking for a dog friendly, people friendly, chilled out, no pressure, lovely beer and chilled atmosphere then here is the place to go. Chilled out in there again tonight with a few beers and played some of the games in the pub. No frills, lovely beer, quality staff and a chilled out night. Quality.

Loch Leven National Nature Reserve - Pier entrance is a family-friendly destination in Kinross, offering various activities such as visiting Loch Leven Castle, exploring RSPB Loch Leven nature reserve, and enjoying outdoor playgrounds. The 12-mile circular walk around the loch provides stunning views and birdwatching opportunities. The route features bird hides, beaches, and a dog-friendly RSPB center for refreshments.
We had a fantastic trip over to Loch Leven Castle, the staff who take you over on the boat are brilliant and so well informed. We have Historic Scotland memberships so it was also free for us, highly recommended

What a wee gem this place is, it's full of things to take in at every turn walking around the perimeter of the loch, The walk is about 12- 13 miles long going round with stunning views see be ready for a stunning walk around the loch be sure to arrive early if you intend to walk around the loch as you don't want to be cought walking round it with your dad at 11:50 pm pitch black using one phone torch, as he took a fall I can only call a clumsy fall that could have been avoided so because of said fall the walk took us ten minutes shy of 7 hours but definitely worth it I'll be going back butt this time on my own hahaha.
Dean C — Google review
Great day, we booked our tickets as it was recommended, really glad we did as the Monday and Thursday boats were cancelled due to the weather.
Lorna M — Google review
Really is a remarkable place. Took a long time to walk the 11.5 miles around the loch but it was worth it on a perfect day. Paths are good but watch out for some cyclists that go a bit fast. Dogs on leads to be safe.
Col C — Google review
Excellent way to spend a few hrs. Very interesting historical castle. Nice wee trip in the boat across. £10 per person so not bad . Definitely recommend a visit especially on a nice sunny day
Gordon D — Google review
Fabulous boat trip to the Island and back. The Island and Castle are well worth visiting. Famous for keeping Mary Queen of Scots prisoner for over a year. . There are toilets on the Island. Flush but no running water for hand wash. They are clean and tidy. Boat holds 12 passengers and run every 45 mins.. weather permitting. Book in advance. No cafe or takeaway. So take a picnic. ..A very nice day out for £10. .

I walked from Loch leven Larder whole way around n bk to larder with my little sister as she was doing a charity walk 64 miles for sands. I'm not gonna lie. After 8 miles was hard, n last couple were really tough, but we did it 💪 beautiful walk took just over 6 hours with plenty of spots to stop off for wee break. Would defo recommend it. We're going to cycle next time ❤️❤️ xx

Beautiful Scottish estate on the banks of Loch Leven, you can take a boat trip to the island on the loch to visit an ancient and important Castle 🏰 Also lovely walk around the loch with lots of wildlife! Well worth a visit 😊

Amazing place in the beautiful estate with flowers, pheasants and other birds walking in the big green space as you are heading to the spa. The spa is lovely, Scottish decor. We enjoyed the sauna and hydrotherapy before having a relaxing massage session and then tea in a relaxing area. The staff at the reception and the therapist were polite and with a nice smile that makes everything more enjoyable.

Love, love, love this place. Went to the coach House for a spa day...was not disappointed. Lovely, relaxing atmosphere and the girls were all professional and very welcoming. Superb cleanliness. 😀 Only issue was the lockers downstairs.....the locks either didn't work or the lock got stuck. Think they need replacing.

Beautiful late sixteen century mansion that has been, carefully, and beautifully restored and still in private ownership, it has a most marvellous and impressive table in the front hall, not to be missed this excellent estate and property.

Fishing lake
Loch Leven Fisheries is a renowned destination for anglers, celebrated for its unique brown trout strain, Salmo Levensis. This picturesque loch has been a prime fishing spot for over a century and offers 18 boats to explore its waters in search of brown trout or pike. Declared a nature reserve in 1964, it also serves as an important habitat for wetland birds and attracts thousands of pink-footed geese each autumn.
Great place for big fish.
Lukatoni — Google review
Poorest days ‘fishing’ I’ve ever experienced. The loch is very shallow in lots of places. You can run aground at any point without warning, shallow areas not always bouyed as a warning Spent over 6 hours on the water and saw only 2 rises , not a single bite all day and the water is thick with algae No one around when we docked (earlier than we planned as it was so poor) so can only assume someone arrives at 9 goes away and returns at 6pm for the evening shift The boats weren’t the cleanest either Poor experience, won’t be back
Francis R — Google review
Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it on time. The website doesn't make it obvious that you have to be there before 9am to get a boat. The customer service though is 10/10, Jane was very helpful, making phone calls for me and offering a refund, so big thanks!!!
Przemyslaw S — Google review
A great place in it's hay day but despite reasonable reports it is a very poor place to fish in today's venues
Rick S — Google review
When I arrived the staff here told me that as I was not a professional ferry driver I was not allowed to go anywhere except to the spot he pointed out even though it was a sunny day. But the spot was very shallow so when I arrived the engine didn't work and I had to use the paddle to move around. I asked him if I could go fishing somewhere else and he said very unreasonably that I could not continue fishing even though I had gone to that shallow spot because I had followed his instructions. BTW I only called him this once for enquiry.I asked him why,he didn't answer and then he took the boat and dropped me off at a spot and told me I could only stay there and I had to contact him if I want to leave, I stayed there for an hour and left because there were no fish at that spot. This is a really strange place, no one has come here to fish recently and their updates are a few years old, I have never given a bad review anywhere, this is my first bad review, I hope you can at least have a little respect for your customers! There are no more fish in this lake due to overfishing, rude unreasonable staff, will never come back Again.
Kevin L — Google review

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Lochleven Castle, located in the heart of Perth and Kinross, is a historic landmark with ties to Mary Queen of Scots' imprisonment in 1567. This evocative island fortress and prison dates back to the late 14th century. While the castle itself is small and mostly in ruins, it offers a glimpse into Scottish history with dark staircases and rooms to explore.
As we are members of Historic Scotland, we decided to visit this site last Friday. It was such a beautiful day and the boat trip over to the castle was lovely. Use your Sat nav to find Pier road, as it is hidden behind a housing estate. By the time we arrived we were unable to join the next motor boat as it only holds 12 passengers at a time. This was not a problem though as there is a large park and grassy area to walk around. We sat at the waters edge watching people on their paddle boards. The sailings go every 45 mins so it was no big deal to wait for the next sailing. If you are impatient though you can always book ahead. The girl steering the boat was very friendly explaining the safety rules whilst onboard before we started our sail. Once on the island we were given the directions to the only toilets on the small island. You need to take a picnic with you if you want to eat as there are no other facilities there. I felt this would be an ideal place to take children as there are flat grassy areas to run around and picnic tables. The castle and grounds are quite interesting and there are displays dotted around providing historical information and nature facts. I would definitely recommend Loch Leven castle for a family day out particularly on a sunny day.
Anna M — Google review
Brilliant visit! Plenty of parking with clear signs and toilets nearby. Book your boat online and arrive 15 mins early – the trip across the loch was so calm and scenic, with friendly skippers. The castle is small but full of history and charm, with picnic spots and great views (you can even see Kinross House). We spent about 40 minutes exploring, then relaxed while waiting for the return boat. Highly recommend, especially if you’re interested in Mary Queen of Scots!
LJ M — Google review
Lovely small castle built in the 14th century. It was once Mary Queen of Scot's prison (until she escaped). It sits on a small island on Loch Leven and is accessed by the castle boat, which is included in your ticket.
Joe F — Google review
Nice little castle on an island. On a rainy summer morning, we had the place to ourselves. Catch a short 10 min boat ride to get there. The boat returns every 45 min, which is just about right to see the entirety of it.
Corey D — Google review
Great place to visit! The boat trip to get to the castle is a nice extra attraction, the guide/ steersman will tell some interesting historical facts on the way. On the island you can visiting all the floors of the castle, walk it around, have a picnic on one of the benches with a pretty view or just relax under the gorgeous oak tree 💖
Gruba W — Google review
Fantastic little castle to visit. The trip there is by boat to the island, and the island itself is absolutely beautiful. Perfect for those who want to visit castles that are a little off the usual touristic path! Staff was friendly and helpful.
Debbie — Google review
Nice day out on a cold autumn morning. Took the boat across to the castle, the operator was very polite and informative of local history whilst we travelled across the water, trip takes about 10 minutes. Went around the castle grounds and inside where there are information boards at various points telling you the history of the place. I would recommend a 45min walk around/explore and ready for the return back by boat. For something to eat and drink there was the pink cafe next to the ticket office. We used it on the way out however, we decided to pop into Kinross to visit the Muir head hotel/pub for lunch.

Kinross Curling Rink is a hidden gem for curling enthusiasts. The ice is consistently well-maintained, providing a smooth surface for a laid-back game. The food menu surprised me with its quality – not your typical rink fare. The bar staff is friendly and efficient, making the whole experience enjoyable. It's not a flashy place, but if you appreciate a cozy atmosphere, good ice, and friendly faces, Kinross Curling Rink is worth a visit. A delightful spot for a casual curling evening with friends.

The Loch Leven Heritage Trail is a 13-mile circular path that offers a blend of natural, historic, and cultural heritage around Loch Leven. The trail provides stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere with well-maintained paths suitable for walkers, cyclists, runners, and even horseback riding. Along the way, there are various stopping points to rest or enjoy refreshments. Visitors can also admire the beautiful Castle while taking in the scenery.
This trail is amazing. The terrain is relatively flat. The views are spectacular and the trail is peaceful. It is well maintained and clearly marked. You can do just a portion or the entire trail with a number of options of places to stop along the way to just sit on benches or for a cup of tea or something to eat. It is open for walkers, cyclists, runners, dogs and horseback riding. It affords you a wonderful view of Castle also.
Amy S — Google review
Lovely 14 mile walk around or near Loch Leven. The pathway is well maintained and has very few gradients. Toilets etc are more or less opposite each other depending on where you start the trail so could be some distance in between. Scenery is lovely throughout. If you go prepared only the weather can make it a poor experience!
James 4 — Google review
Visited here for the first time today. The Loch is beautiful, the trail goes all the way around. Best places for parking are Burleigh Sands and Kirkgate. Loch Leven Larder is right next to the Loch, which offers a farm shop and cafe. Also a path which connects the two. Lovely day out, will be back!
Isabella M — Google review
Lovely scenic walk on the heritage trail all the way round Loch leven. Well signposted and great underfoot. Vane Farm for a coffee and cake, or Loch leven larder round the other side. Around 13 mls all round.
Craig H — Google review
Good Flat(ish) trail, 13 miles/21km Not many views of the loch as much of the trail is through woodland, however the surrounding scenery is beautiful.
Allan M — Google review
On the 13 mile walk around this beautiful walk way ...there was ONLY 1 place to stop and eat or have a tea/coffee. Also there was a place selling Lavender oil...but at the point of view one was unable to gain access to the site without retracing you footsteps quiet some way to the entrance, might I suggest a sty to gain access to the point.

Took an autumnal afternoon cycle round the Heritage Trail and really enjoyed it. We were lucky enough to catch a large skein of geese taking off from the loch, a spectacular sight and sound.

A lovely place to visit with great views over the Loch. The centre has a souvenir shop, plenty of clean toilets. Gravel car park with parking charges. We actually went to an outdoor theatre group at 7pm. Had a picnic watching the Shakespear show.

Great visitor centre and cafe. Did the wetland trail. There are several hides and you are quite a way from the water do bring binoculars or you can hire them for £7. Parking (a charge) is spacious and there's an underpass for the road. We went to see the pink-footed geese and were not disappointed. Heard them before we saw them.

Always love visiting. Beautiful walk around the loch and into the forest to see red squirrels. Was lucky enough to see an Osprey hunt for fish. A great day out
Claire — Google review
Nice reserve with extensive wetlands and a woodland walk. There are three hides providing views of pools and wet grasslands. On my last visit I saw a Marsh Harrier and four Ospreys. Ospreys don't breed here but fish in the Loch, especially in late summer. There are Red Squirrels in the woods and Brown Hares in the fields. The visitor centre is staffed by helpful volunteers and has an excellent cafe with loads of tasty vegan options, which suits me. UPDATE the cafe menu has changed, now consists of bought in sandwiches and light bites. The excellent range of vegan cakes has gone.

While this castle is very, very small it is still a nice experience. The views of the Loch are quite nice from here and it is a short but lovely walk from Milnathort. It is a great place for kids to run and play. During the season you can pop across the road to pick up the key to get inside. It is well cared for and an interesting part of Scottish history.
Amy S — Google review
Literally at the side of the road so worth parking up and having a wander. Not open when we visited but there is limited opening at certain times of the year. What is left is quite impressive. An attractive 15th century three storey tower joined to some surviving courtyard wall with a gate and then a corner tower. James VI of Scotland was a regular visitor. There is a helpful information board.

not open everyday, I thought this was abandoned and open 24 hours. so I could onlu take outside photos. No pave to park either. Not even a Grass field to use.

Small little castle ruins, there is access to the towers and can go up a flight of stairs. One has had some restoration work with some windows and a roof. Varied opening times so I'd check the heritage scotland website before hand. Free entry no need to book. No parking, we drove right past, had to drive for a bit to turn around. Found a quiet street next to houses close by.

Quick visit on a Sunday afternoon. Need to go back when it's open to see inside. And to take better photos 🙂

Small but difficult to park safely nice example of a small Scottish castle with a lot of history the Balfours from 1456. Mary of Guise visited as did James the sixth a frequent visitor . access is not available but you can enter the grounds and walk round

Lovely wee place, soaked in history and a lovely start for your walk, summer only .

Look's to have a small car park but it's overgrown and is not useable? (noted by the other gate in the fence into castle grounds) The castle was owned by the Balfour family perhaps related to Jamie Balfour featured in the film Kidnapped? Much of the stone is missing likely used by local builder's to build private dwelling's. What is left suggests a most impressive castle that was virtually raised to the ground after the Jacobite war of 1716.

Just the two stones standing to the north side of Loch Leven. Parking about 100 yards away . They are 50 yards into the field. There is a good view of Loch Leven and the Lomonds .
Leslie M — Google review
Two stones in the middle of someones cropfields so you can't get to them or read information about them.

The stones themselves are beautiful and majestic, however they are located in a farmer's field on a busy 60mph. There isn't really anywhere suitable to pull in and park to go see them, it's ashame, but it is what it is I suppose.
Lisa T — Google review
There's no direct path, the stones do be accessible if you cross the adjoining field
Julie D — Google review
Worth a visit if you're in the area. You need to park in the entrance to the field. Nice and peaceful energy here ❤️

I have passed these stones for over two decades on my commute and recreational travel. They stand off the A911 opposite Orwell Farm, halfway between Kinross / Milnathort and Kinnesswood. The rise of the ridge silhouettes them perfectly against the sky. They are angled to one another in an unusual way that suggests they may be survivors of a tight circle now robbed out, but excavation says otherwise. As two singleton stones placed yards but possibly centuries apart, with scanty traces of at least one burial, they are not only enigmatic but possibly unique.

Orwell & Portmoak Parish Church is a charming place of worship nestled in the picturesque countryside. This historic church, with its stunning architecture and serene surroundings, offers visitors a glimpse into the rich heritage of the area. The community here is warm and welcoming, making it an inviting spot for both locals and travelers alike.
During the Christmas of 2018, Scots celebrity minister, the Very Reverend Angus Morrison (QHC) snubbed his flock for a state royal yacht, memorial service. Since 2015 the Scots Kirk has moved to greater cooperation with the Church of England, the community are unfriendly but no more so than in most well-doing rural settings. The site is important as linking the early church, Loch Leven Priory with St Leonard in nearby Fife and thereby the elite and traditional religious community in St Andrews. In 2018 the Very Reverend Morrison was seen to snub a stranger - in Christianity considered 'Jesus in disguise' and so a better rating for the church can't be offered but it might be judged snobbish by some.
