Castle

Historic Sites
Rocca Sforzesca di Soncino is a medieval military castle that has been preserved in its ancient glory. The castle features four stout towers, crenellations, moat and drawbridge, giving visitors a glimpse into the past when it was under siege by enemies of Milan's Sforza clan. While the inside of the manor is undergoing restoration, there are still plenty of opportunities to capture beautiful photos and explore the lower chambers, main tower, and walls.
Great castle, 7€ per adult to wander through the hallways, rooms, courtyard and raised walkways with nice views of the surrounding countryside. There's 2 small museums inside and tickets get you entrance to them and a few others around town. Not much explanation as to what many of the rooms and spaces were used for. One room has some furniture like a bedroom and the upper kitchen is labeled, but not much else. None of the information signs I noticed had English (not surprisingly) but there is cell reception for translate. Tickets are across from the entrance in the building with the wooden slats.

Although the inside of this great manor is going through a major restoration (late summer 2023) there are plenty of beautiful photos to shoot. Take your time to walk around the whole perimeter to enjoy the architecture of the massive wall surrounding the Castle. One major flaw is (IMO) the presence of a tennis court right NEXT to this beautiful ancient manor!! Still worth a visit though. Have fun.
Gio C — Google review
Truly amazing place mostly unknown by tourists. Part of the itinerary of the city in a multi-entrance ticket costing only 7 Euros. Have fun visiting the entire castle. Added bonus: archeological museum inside documenting the evolution from Celtic to Roman to Medieval.
Cristiano N — Google review
A medieval military castle preserved in its ancient glory. It’s possible to explore the lower chambers, the main tower and walk along the walls. Visit with professional guides can be arranged at the entrance (highly recommended! about 20€) Expect 45min queues to get tickets (cash only, 5€) Closes at about 5pm, perfect for a winter sunset.

One of the many jewels that dot the Po valley. We visited on a Sunday afternoon in August, and it was not crowded at all. The town too deserves a visit.

The Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie is a magnificent Catholic church that dates back to the 16th century and is located just outside the center of Soncino. While its exterior may not be particularly remarkable, upon entering, one is immediately captivated by the opulence of its decorations. The intricately painted frescoes and stunning chapels, numbering at least ten, are truly awe-inspiring.
A lovely charming Renaissance church, lovingly well preserved. Very peaceful with no crowds.

From the outside this old church is very deceiving as when you step inside you are looking at the most amazing frescoes. Definitely worth a visit. We were pleased we went. A PDF of the history is available by scanning a QR code and a small donation towards the upkeep.

(Translated by Google) The stunning church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is located just outside the medieval walls of Soncino. The building dates back to 1501, and its interior is completely frescoed with beautiful paintings. Little visited, little known, it's definitely worth a visit. (Translated by Google) A truly beautiful church! The almost anonymous façade gives no indication of the splendor within, which is truly jaw-dropping! Every inch of the walls of the side chapels, the apse, and the barrel vault were painted with colors that are still vivid today. On the counterfaçade, the Last Judgement stands out in the lower section (the monster into whose jaws the damned disappear is remarkable); the upper section, on the other hand, depicts St. Peter and St. Paul on either side of the rose window, with God the Father above it. In short, nothing short of spectacular! A highly recommended visit! (Original) Chiesa davvero bella! Insomma, a dir poco spettacolare! Visita consigliatissima!

Castello di Soncino is a must-visit with its beautiful castle and village. The single ticket for the castle and two museums is a splendid idea, offering an interesting visit to the entire village. The church of S. Maria Assunta is also wonderful, adding to the charm of the place. With lots of history, this stunning site should not be missed, even if only seen from the outside. It's simply beautiful!

Specialty Museums
Museo Della Stampa is a small but fascinating museum located in Soncino. The museum showcases the history of the Jewish Soncino family, who transitioned from usury to printing after being driven out of business by a local bank. Visitors can learn about the first Hebrew bible printed using the Gutenberg method. The guided tour provides detailed historical and sociopolitical context from the 1400s, enriching the experience.
The history of the Jewish Soncino family who moved to Soncino from Germany to practice usury under invitation of the Sforzas (who would keep a considerable portion of the interest) but then resorted to printing after friars opened a Monte di Pietà, a bank that would charge smaller interests, and drove them out of business. Here the first Hebrew bible was printed with the Gutenberg method. Very interesting place to visit, with free guided tour. You just buy a multi entrance ticket for 7 euros, which also covers the Rocca.
Cristiano N — Google review
Another gem to visit while in Soncino. The young man did a brilliant job in telling the history of this place, jumping back and forth from English to Italian. Since the small group was mostly made up of Italians,(of course) never encountered this level of customer service. Very impressed!!!
Peter C — Google review
Thirty years after Gutenberg's printing press with moveable type, this system was brought to Italy, in Soncino, strategic town in Northen Italy between Milan and Bergamo in the 15th century. In the museum you can hear the whole story from the mouth an excellent, proud, storyteller. Recommended.

(Translated by Google) A lovely museum located in a typical late Gothic tower house in Soncino, the place where the first complete Hebrew Bible was printed in 1488. A place full of important memories and original equipment that will take you to learn about the history and life of the printers also through a nineteenth-century press which, the very good and highly trained guides, will show you how it works.

(Translated by Google) The Printing Museum in Soncino is an interesting stop, especially for those curious to discover how printing worked in its early days. The setting is evocative, housed in a historic building that conveys an atmosphere of times gone by. The reconstruction of the first printing press and the presence of original machinery are undoubtedly the museum's highlights. However, the visit is short, and some sections could use a refresh, both in content and layout. The explanations given by the young man at the entrance are very thorough and precise. It would also be interesting to include audio guides. The staff is friendly, but the organization could be more engaging, especially for younger visitors. The practical demonstrations are a good idea. The price is reasonable (about €5), so it's still worth a visit if you're already in Soncino, perhaps combining it with the Rocca. However, don't expect a modern or interactive museum. It's a little gem with potential, but it could shine even brighter with some updates.

You are welcomed by Enzo Corbani, not a simple collector but a true scholar passionate about the history of silk, with particular attention to its genesis: the companies producing silkworm eggs. Enzo accompanies visitors with competence and passion, also showing some "goodies" such as videos, posters, books and vintage photos, as well as the classic ancient instruments. An experience that I highly recommend having, for the availability of the person (my boyfriend and I came from far away and he welcomed us and even suggested a wonderful place to have lunch) but above all to learn about a part - also - of our history still little known. If you go from the fortress towards the old town of Soncino, you must go by this ancient and extremely attractive mill.
(Translated by Google) I love mills so much that I would dedicate a day of celebration to them every year, they constituted a fundamental turning point in the history of man. I approach them with respect as if I were the grandson in front of his great and wise grandfather and as I close my eyes to feel their vibrations through centuries of history. Even this beautiful mill, despite its abandonment, communicated a lot to me: the passion, the hard work, the different days and the values, pillars of the civil society of its experience, like the ever-present essence of true timeless beauty.

(Translated by Google) We didn't even understand if it was possible to visit it or go up there. It would have been nice to see Soncino and the Rocca from that point. The tower is the symbol of medieval Soncino. Dating back to the 12th century, it is almost 42 m high. It is part of the Town Hall which has been restored several times. Inside there are still the ancient prisons.
