Lac Pavin is a small, picturesque crater lake located in Auvergne, the result of volcanic activity 6000 years ago. It is the deepest lake in the region at 93 meters. Visitors can enjoy trout and perch fishing, paddling, and an easy loop walking trail around the lake. The surrounding area offers various hiking options to nearby hamlets or even up to Sancy peak for more adventurous hikers.
For the English 😂: Brilliant lake and forest with a great path to go round with family, friends, pets or on your own. The only thing is it can be a bit muddy and there aren't fences all around so be careful. Definitely recommend if you're nearby 👍

This lake and forest are full of green and peaceful. There’s also a wonderful path to walk around. Overall, it was a great experience.
Yadun M — Google review
Beautiful spot for walks and cycling. On side is easy and dry, the other path more muddy and wet with roots and stones making the walk uneasy. Put some good shoes on.
Christophe B — Google review
Must-visit lake in Auvergne! It’s a volcanic lake, and walking around it takes less than an hour with beautiful views all the way. We did the loop with our dog, absolutely lovely!
Mia G — Google review
Beautiful, even on a grey day. Various hiking options to lengthen your route. Roadside parking. Check café opening hours.
Lee — Google review
About an hour’s walk around this beautiful lake, a former volcano (which actually is two lakes superimposed). Track mostly flat and easy to do in sneakers. Great views to lake along the way. Access and car parking close to start point. Public toilets available - clean at the time we were there.
James — Google review
If you are a nature lover and you like to spend your time amidst water, trees and rock, then there is no better place. All around the lake, there is a place for a stroll but is hardly visible to the naked eyes. This is a picturesque location for any photography lover. Boating is also available for a nominal cost. Only setback is the unavailability of a shelter in case of an unprecedented downpour or a kids play area, so, plan accordingly.
Arvind Y — Google review
Great place to walk and admire the landscape! The walk is easy, and it takes about 1h walk to walk around it. For your information it was a volcano before and the lake is very deep ±100m! You can't swim in it

Puy de Chambourguet is a prominent feature near the winter sports resort of Super Besse. It offers a relatively quick and not overly challenging climb with stunning views at the top, including the ski resort, Lake Pavin, Chaudefour Valley, and Puy de la Perdrix. The hike is recommended for families, as it provides a magnificent route culminating in a 360-degree viewpoint at the heart of the puy.

Maison de la Reine Margot is a historical site located in the beautiful village of Besse. It is a 15th-century house that now houses the 'musee du ski.' Legend has it that Queen Marguerite de Valois stayed here in October 1586 before traveling the country to gather support against the French Crown. The house offers visitors a glimpse into this rich history and provides a special moment for those interested in exploring its significance.

(Translated by Google) Maison de la Reine Margot Today you will find the 'musée du ski' in this XV-century house of a wealthy merchant in the 'rue des Boucheries'. A legend says that in October 1586, Queen Marguerite de Valois spent the night here. She then traveled throughout the country, looking for supporters in her fight against the French Crown. In the facade on the street side, on the ground floor you see two doors with pointed arch-shaped door frames and to the right of them a window framed with a large basket arch. It is immediately clear that this building was once a shop. You will find XV century windows on the floors. On the left, a stair tower emerges slightly from the front facade. Above the door you can see coats of arms in a tympanum. We embarked on a circular stroll from Besse to the cascades, which occupied more than 60 minutes. However, for those seeking a briefer encounter, there is a parking lot in closer proximity. It is advisable to wear suitable footwear such as sturdy sneakers or proper hiking boots. The surroundings are remarkably pleasant and serene. The cascades themselves are undeniably stunning, although it may be difficult to ascertain their exact starting and ending points.
Walked a loop from Besse to the falls which took over an hour but for a shorter experience there’s a car park closer. Recommend wearing appropriate footwear (good sneakers or proper walking boots). Really pleasant and calming environment.

Catholic church
Nestled in the vibrant pedestrian center of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, Église Saint-André is a stunning architectural gem that dates back to the 12th century. This remarkable church showcases a blend of historical styles, with its Romanesque three-nave layout restored in the 19th century to reflect neo-Romanesque influences.
Quiet atmosphere for prayers and reflections. Beautiful place of worship.
Lijo S — Google review
(Translated by Google) The Saint-André Church (RK) (Andreaskerk) was built in this volcanic area on a solidified lava flow, and we can already tell from the dark color of the stones that they are lava stones. Clay for bricks, marble, marlstone, lava stone, slate…. which building material is widely available in a region - and therefore cheaper, and easier to buy and transport! That was certainly already in the Middle Ages, when the first St. André was built in the 12th century. Not much is left of it now: only the ship was built in Romanesque style. The choir is Gothic (16th century), a new apse was added in 1822, and the side chapels are 17th and 18th century. When we enter it is quite dark, but yes, outside even with sunglasses and a cap you have difficulty looking into the light...! The small stained glass windows spread beautiful rainbow structures in the dark interior. The church is not very special, but it does have a number of things that are nice to see! The many and varied sculpted Romanesque capitals stand out: we see leaves, human figures (even an executioner and his victim), monkeys, eagles, centaurs, Biblical scenes. The few carved choir stalls made of dark wood are from the 16th century. The old stone baptismal font has been here, I suspect, since the 12th century! In the choir we find a statue of the Black Madonna of Vassivière behind the high altar, from before the 14th century, and still venerated in the region. It is not without reason that the church was classified as a Historical Monument around 1890.

(Translated by Google) This visit enchanted me, the church sits in the heart of this medieval city. A 12th century church, the 3-nave Romanesque nave was restored in the 19th century in the neo-Romanesque style, the original choir was rebuilt in the 16th century, the side chapels which line the side aisles were added in the 17th and 18th centuries. Despite all these transformations, this church emanates an authenticity specific to these monuments built in volcanic stones. (Translated by Google) Eglise Saint-André History This Romanesque church dates back to the end of the XIIth century and was built on top of an old lava flow. From that early period now only the nave and the transept remain. During that period it was managed by a monastic community of monks. It became an important place of pilgrimage, where people started to venerate the 'Notre-Dame de Vassivière'. In order to properly accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims, the Romanesque choir was replaced in 1551 by a Gothic choir with a flat chevet. In the XVII and XVIII centuries, the church was expanded with side chapels and a new porch was built. In the days after the French Revolution, the bell tower was destroyed. In 1822 it was decided to replace the flat chevet with a semi-circular apse and forty years later - in 1862 - a bell tower was again erected where the old one had once stood. The church was completely restored on the inside in the 1970s. Every year the "Fête de la Devalade" is celebrated there. On that occasion, the statue of Our Lady is carried in procession from the church to the “chapelle de Vassivière”. A trip of about seven kilometers. Architecture The andesite stone in which this church was built gives it a rather gloomy appearance. It is a transeptless building with an octagonal bell tower with spire dating from the XIX century. In the southern facade you will find the XVI-century main portal. An angel stands in a niche above the porch. The arched frames of the door are very beautifully sculpted at the ends. Inside the church, the chapels are illuminated through tall Gothic windows. The XIX century chevet ends in a semi-circular apse with a single window. The scarce light and the color of the stones make the interior as gloomy as the outside. This does not benefit the 28 capitals in the nave and in the crossing of the transept. Yet it depicts both beautiful religious and profane scenes: the 'parable of the rich and the poor', 'the passion of Saint André', 'the story of Lazarus', 'a great ape on a leash', 'a sacrificial scene' and 'centaurs among the bushes'. Despite the many renovations and adjustments, you can still see a number of beautifully sculpted XVI-century choir stalls in the choir. Its folding chairs – the misericordiatjes – are all beautifully decorated, either with images of vices (slander, greed, anger, debauchery, etc.) or of crafts (barber, carpenter, shoemaker). In a niche at the back of the choir is the XIV-century statue of 'Notre-Dame de Vassivière'. The subject of intense veneration for five centuries.

(Translated by Google) Porte du Beffroi / Tour d'Horloge As a prosperous trading city, Besse repeatedly had to contend with English armies that ravaged the region during the Hundred Years' War. When the inhabitants brilliantly repelled such an attack in 1373, they asked King Charles VI for permission to build a wall with towers. Only in 1436 and 1449 would they receive this. This belfry - also called the 'Tour d' Watch' - was built at the end of the Hundred Years' War. Later - in the 16th century - it was raised with another floor and equipped with a barbican with four embrasures for cannons. The octagonal tower crowned with the open bell tower also dates from the same period. The weathercock in the shape of a wolf had an unmistakable message of deterrence for potential English attackers. In the days after the French Revolution, only a few coats of arms above the door were taken care of by the revolutionaries, the rest were relatively spared. At the base of this tower is the only remaining city gate of the three that the city had. This gate has a square plan, contained between two parallel arches. You can still clearly see the grooves that guided the portcullis. The tower is equipped with a machicolation and a walkway behind a wall. That is why it is almost certain that it was built before 1430. The entire complex was then renovated in the XIX century. Today it looks like part of a city wall, in which a gate and windows were added 'à meneaux' afterwards. To the right of this three-story building is a semicircular tower. Cultural landmark
The Beffroi de Besse, also known as the Belfry of Besse, is a historic tower that dates back to the Middle Ages. It was strategically built to protect the town from English soldiers during the Hundred Years War. The residents of Besse sought permission to construct a wall around the town for defense and later fortified it with a clock tower, which served as a gatehouse, watchtower, and civic belfry.

If you're seeking an exhilarating experience, look no further than the Tyrolienne Fantasticable Super Besse. This thrilling zip line adventure offers a breathtaking flight that lasts just under two minutes, soaring over stunning mountain landscapes and shimmering lakes. The friendly staff, fluent in English and well-versed in creating a comfortable atmosphere, make the entire experience feel seamless. For just 61 euros for a duo ride, you also enjoy a complimentary lift to the starting point—definitely worth every penny!
Loved the adventure. The person who tied us up to the rope speaks good english and has stayed in India which helped us connect with him faster and he made our flight look much easier than we anticipated. Overall the flight was less than 2 minutes but the bright sun helped us in our journey with beautiful mountain and the lake. At 61euros for duo, they offer free ride up and the flight is worth the penny spent.

Been there twice.I totally recommend if you are an adrenaline junkie. It’s quite scary though when the person at the zip line takes your legs to put them in a strap kind of thing and you hang above a very steep mountain peek.Very professional. My sister works in the resort so I got to use it for free.Looking forward to it again and again.

(Translated by Google) Hello friends, if you have an hour to spare and you are in Besse and it is hot.....here is a good plan. It’s less than 3 km away. The waterfall is indicated on the side of the road. A few places to park also on the side of the road. The path is relatively correct for going there with small children, around 10 minutes of walking 🚶‍♀️. Namely, what you go down you have to go up afterwards 😰😂… Arriving at the bottom, it’s a pretty waterfall surrounded by greenery. There would be a nice walk along the stream if you want, which I haven't done yet. I try to always have with me a swimsuit and water shoes + towel from a large, well-known sports store chain. To be able to cool off…And it’s quite quick given the temperature of the water 😂😂😂. Bonne balade

(Translated by Google) Magnificent waterfall easily accessible. You have to walk a little along a path dotted with small wooden pontoons to begin to see the waterfall. The noise, the view, once in front you are amazed, the setting is splendid and if you are a photo lover you will be able to enjoy yourself. There is the possibility of approaching by climbing a few stones. We went there as a family and both adults and children were won over. A walk to do and repeat. (Original) Magnifique cascade facilement accessible.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful waterfall. Absolutely worth seeing. Access is via a dirt road, stone or tree roots. It is better to be equipped with walking shoes or at least sneakers (some unconscious people wear tap shoes or flip-flops!). There is a long descent (= climb for the return) via a dirt road from the side of the road. It takes between 10 and 20 minutes for access depending on whether you are a good walker equipped or not. The waterfall and its environment to be preserved have a wild appearance, which is very pleasant. (Original) Belle cascade. A voir abolument.

Mountain cable car
Transportation
Mass Transportation Systems
The Téléphérique de la Perdrix is a fantastic way to explore the stunning landscapes of the Super-Besse Madalet area, situated between 1300 and 1450 meters in altitude. This cable car provides easy access to six ski slopes, a Nordic trail, and a connection to Besse-Pertuyzat. In summer, it transforms into an ideal starting point for leisurely hikes that lead you to breathtaking views at the summit of Puy in just 45 minutes.
We paid for a return ticket at 13.50euros. fast moving smooth ride to the top, around 6 minutes. Walked on to Puy de Sancy in Massif Central, which is the highest peak. It rises to 1886 meters. It's a volcano which has been active for over 220,000 yrs. The walk to Puy de Sancy is 1.7km from where you get off the cable car from Supper Besse and takes around 45 to 60 minutes. The views are amazing, even from when you get out the cable car. Unfortunately the cable car windows are badly scratched and difficult to see out from.
Ian B — Google review
Very convenient access to a nice (if steep) hike to le Puy de Sancy. Comfortable ride. Stickers on the windows to provide some shade in the summer unfortunately limit the view outside.

(Translated by Google) Sublime view at the summit...be careful, it's best to wear hiking shoes to walk the ridge path...!! As for the cable car: - One ticket machine out of two works (when it opens!!) and even then, the receipt paper gets jammed!!! - The tokens dispensed by the machine are not all properly programmed, hence the need to have receipts to use! - The cabin has only a small opening at the top for airflow (so the cabins are very, very hot) and the plexiglass windows are very damaged! - The installation is outdated and could use some repairs But once again, the view is a reward upon arrival!

Following an unfortunate validation of the ski pass to help our son get through, it no longer worked. We went back down to ask why our ski pass was no longer working... and instead of helping or advising us, she was aggressive and didn't take any notice of our situation. (Translated by Google) The receptionist warned us that it wasn't a good day given the weather, so we knew we wouldn't see much. On the other hand, the cabins are damaged (scratched, you really can't see much through the window). It spoils the experience. The price is quite reasonable, but I think the €2 token system is really borderline... But the real problem was the receptionist, who behaved rather rudely (she clearly judged us because we were going up when there was no sun, saying, "You can go up, but it won't do any good.") She also asked for proof of age for the children to get free access, even though my son is 2 years old and it showed...

(Translated by Google) A half-day visit was planned to reach the top of the ski area. At the ticket office, in addition to the high price for the ascent (we knew it, but still...), we discovered that we had to pay 2 euros for a non-returnable, non-recyclable plastic token!!! It's both absurd and dishonest. A paper ticket would do the job perfectly well, with a visual check. It would avoid waste, but 2 euros per tourist on top of the cable car fare is certainly very attractive at the end of summer. Let's hope the resort doesn't dare claim to be environmentally friendly. I should add that the signage of the pedestrian paths is laborious.

Being an English-speaking tourist, I was initially hesitant to contact the tourism office in Super-Besse. However, they provided excellent support in English, which made my experience much easier. I traveled there by bus from Clermont-Ferrand in January and was amazed by its incredible skiing opportunities. Even for non-skiers, there is the option to take the telepherique for a stunning snow-covered view of the mountains.
Very helpful!!! Very. I suggest that you visit the office as soon as you arrive so that they can tell you about all the activities the village has planed for the season. This is very useful.

(Translated by Google) We were very shocked by the bans on overnight parking for camper vans. This is a discriminatory ban, banned by the National Assembly and by numerous decrees of the Council of State, but the town hall of Besse seems above the law and prefers that people sleep in their cars or converted vans and relieve themselves at the side of the road or in the parking lot of the cross-country ski resort. We had planned to visit and do some shopping but we went elsewhere. A camper van is SELF-CONTAINED; we have showers, toilets, a kitchen... so there is no point in going to a campsite or sticking like sardines in the full sun on the Super Besse area. We are boycotting you without regret.
